Researchers from Western and Brown University have made groundbreaking progress towards identifying the root cause and potential therapy for preeclampsia.
The pregnancy complication affects up to eight per cent of pregnancies globally and is the leading cause of maternal and fetal mortality due to premature delivery, complications with the placenta and lack of oxygen.
The research, led by Drs. Kun Ping Lu and Xiao Zhen Zhou at Western, and Drs. Surendra Sharma and Sukanta Jash at Brown, has identified a toxic protein, cis P-tau, in the blood and placenta of preeclampsia patients.
According to the study published in Nature Communications, cis P-tau is a central circulating driver of preeclampsia – a “troublemaker” that plays a major role in causing the deadly complication...
“The root cause of preeclampsia has (so far) remained unknown, and without a known cause there has been no cure. Preterm delivery is the only life-saving measure,” said Lu, professor of biochemistry and oncology at  Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry...
“Our study identifies cis P-tau as a crucial culprit and biomarker for preeclampsia. It can be used for early diagnosis of the complication and is a crucial therapeutic target,” said Sharma...
Until now, cis P-tau was mainly associated with neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s disease, traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and stroke. This association was discovered by Lu and Zhou in 2015 as a result of their decades of research on the role of tau protein in cancer and Alzheimer’s.
An antibody developed by Zhou in 2012 to target only the toxic protein while leaving its healthy counterpart unscathed is currently undergoing clinical trials in human patients suffering from TBI and Alzheimer’s Disease. The antibody has shown promising results in animal models and human cell cultures in treating the brain conditions.
The researchers were curious whether the same antibody could work as a potential treatment for preeclampsia. Upon testing the antibody in mouse models they found astonishing results.
“In this study, we found the cis P-tau antibody efficiently depleted the toxic protein in the blood and placenta, and corrected all features associated with preeclampsia in mice. Clinical features of preeclampsia, like elevated blood pressure, excessive protein in urine and fetal growth restriction, among others, were eliminated and pregnancy was normal,” said Sharma.
Sharma and his team at Brown have been working on developing an assay for early detection of preeclampsia and therapies to treat the condition. He believes the findings of this study have brought them closer to their goal...
“The results have far-reaching implications. This could revolutionize how we understand and treat a range of conditions, from pregnancy-related issues to brain disorders,” said Lu.

BSc Biomed part 2
this is in response to this ask here.  From @multifaceted-musings
any textbooks/resources that you’d recommend?? every college recommends like 10 books of their own and there’s so many online but which ones are actually useful?? on that note, any place i can get secondhand textbooks from??
we didnt have any required reading for our course, which you’ll find is true in many science degrees but there were definitely some crowd favourites that I recommend.
for starters, places to get cheap/free books:
b-ok.org - also known as z libraries
you can download pdf versions of pretty much all textbooks you can think of for free - if you make an account you can do 10 downloads in a day.
if you want cheap physical copies, i used alibris but be warned that it tends to be older editions as its second hand textbooks, but the science is just as good. I got 6 textbooks for £30 where the original retail value of them would have been upwards of £500.
recommendations:
Dacie and Lewis practical haematology textbook (found on z library) - excellent for finding protocols and methods for a huge variety of experiments.
clinical biochemistry by Nessar Ahmed (z-library)
Manual of laboratory and diagnostic tests by Denise D Wilson (z-library) - good for reference ranges needed for lab reports and also gives the reason for the test and possible causes of high and low values - includes blood test results and urine test results.
molecular biology of cancer - Lauren Pecorino - she guest lectured for us and was amazing, I love her textbook
anything by Nessar Ahmed (they do the whole oxford range of textbooks)
if you have to use SPSS, any manual or guide that has pictures is going to be your greatest ally
all textbooks are useful in a science degree and you will find yourself scouring tons of them for information, and its fine if its an obscure textbook you found on a deep dive translated from the a different countries medical journal, as long as its legit its all good.
your university log in details will also get you access to a number of websites so you can read journals more recently published on spaces like Elselvier which is a big publisher of all things science. Talk to your librarians about what kind of access you have to these online databases. I found that some journals were still restricted but putting them into z-library or sci-hub will usually get you free access!

How many types of analyzers are there in biochemistry?
Biochemistry analyzers are the backbone of medical laboratories. These sophisticated instruments, manufactured by leading companies in the biochemistry analyzer manufacturers industry, play a pivotal role in diagnosing diseases, monitoring treatment efficacy, and ensuring overall patient well-being. But what exactly are these analyzers, and what varieties do they encompass? Let’s delve into the world of biochemistry analyzers.
Tumblr media
Getting to Know Biochemistry Analyzers
Automated or semi-automated devices called biochemistry analyzers are used to measure different biochemical compounds in biological fluids such as urine, blood, and cerebrospinal fluid. These analyzers are essential for identifying anomalies that can point to underlying medical issues.
Biochemistry Analyzer Types
A number of criteria, such as testing parameters, sample processing technique, and automation level, can be used to classify biochemistry analyzers. Below is a summary of the main kinds:
Depending on Automation Level: Manual Analyzers: These need a lot of manual labour for the addition of reagent, sample preparation, and result interpretation. They are time-consuming and prone to human error even if they are inexpensive.
Semi-Automatic Analyzers: Blend automated and human processes. They are ideal for smaller labs because they provide a cost-efficiency trade-off.
Fully Automated Analyzers: By managing every stage of the analysis process with little assistance from humans, these sophisticated systems improve accuracy and throughput.
According to the Sample Processing Method
Continuous Flow Analyzers: By allowing many samples to be analyzed at once, chemicals and samples are continually pumped through a system of tubes.
Discrete Evaluation Tools: By processing each sample separately in a different cuvette, the chance of cross-contamination is decreased.
Centrifugal analyzers: Within a rotor, separate cups hold the samples and reagents. The components are mixed by centrifugal force, and the reactions are gauged.
Dry Chemistry Analyzers: Forget about using liquid reagents by using dry reagents on test strips.
Why Reputable Biochemistry Analyzers Are Essential
