Mutant Month: The 2021 Hellfire Gala: The X-Men Conquer Mars: Comissioned by WeirdKev27

Hello all you happy mutants and welcome to our big finale to Mutant Month! Over this month we've taken a look at the X-Men's first apperance in animation, one of their greatest stories ever and the debut of one of the greatest x-men period, so it's only fit to end this monumental mutanty month with some fireworks: We're taking a look at the first annual Hellfire Gala, aka one of the x-men stories I brought up the most for some time: that time the x-men colonized mars, now known as planet Arakko.

Allow me to present you with the grand tale of how Mutantkind terraformed an entire planet as a one two punch of solving a massive looming diplomatic crisis... and using it as the big main event of their version of the met gala. Your invitation is on the table, so take it with me, get your flowers pinned on so you can go through the gate, and join the party under the cut. Afterparty on Arakko bitches.

Well, How Did We Get Here?

So to get to the Hellfire Gala I have to get into the krakoan era of x-men, an era tha'ts reaching it's twilight but is still ongoing and has been one of my favorites in comics.

This era of X-History comes after a fairly bleak time in x-men comics: See in the mid 2010's, Marvel tried outright dismantling the x-men. Since the MCU didn't have the rights to them, Marvel was trying hard to not give Fox any more ammo, forgetting they still got mech money out of the x-men existing. They also just outright canceled fantastic four. Because who needs the founding family of the marvel universe if we can't merch the hell out of them amirite?

So despite the X-Men having JUST WARDED OFF EXTINCTION a few years ago, post secret wars they decided to push the Inhumans , anothe rgroup of superpowered beings they'd already set up clevery and uniquely as their own thing last era without stepping on the x-men's toes, as the new x-men and to shoe out the old.

What followed.. is one of the dumbest things i've seen in all of comics. So to push the Inhumans.. they decided the best way was to make the cloud of terrigen mist that created new inhumans... TOXIC TO MUTANTS. So that the Inhumans were casually allowing a toxic murder cloud to kill tons of people.. just to keep more of them existing.

I.. cannot find the words for how tonedeaf, short sighted and just plain moronic this was. You can't just.. kill one group to make another group popular. Queen didn't consume the beating hearts of all four beetles to become awesome. They just were. And the inhumans books.. were GOOD. Charles Soule was doing an utterly fantastic job on them and continued to for the entire run. You didn't need this shit. Instead it sunk the inhumans so that the followup, Royal, by one of my favorite writers in all of comics Al Ewing, got cut short and the inhumans were then mostly killed and those left put into exile. Except Lockjaw. Everyone loves a giant teleporting dog monster. He could stay.

Afterwords while Disney didn't have the rights back YET, Marvel realized they couldn't just magically flimflam fans and tried a half hearted attempt at boosting the x-men: They returned to sorta prominence.. but the new runs weren't given a huge push in the marvel universe as whole. We got the underrated classics X-Men Blue and Iceman, the former finishing up Cullen Bunn's awesome magneto trilogy and the latter redefining Bobby now he was an out and proud gay man, but the other flagship book at the time, yes there were two, x-men gold had a great status quo (Kitty Pryde as Xavier's School headmistress and x-men leader, and the institute now being located in central park), but was given to Mark Guggenhiem instead of a more compitent hand, resulting in a series long rehash of better stories... and one actually GOOD story mixed in.

It was clear while Marvel was willing to use the x-men again, they needed to actually use their whole ass. Enter Jonathan Hickman. For those not familiar with him

Jonathan Hickman is one of the best writer's in comics, and has had storied runs on all three of Marvel's biggest teams, all having a major impact and all really dang good, with a knack for longterm plotting, high sci fi concepts and quotable as hell lines and arc phrases. Hickman left marvel after Secret Wars 2015, his grand finale to his avengers run and intended as an end to his time at marvel so he could move on to new horizons, planning to give the compettition a ring. And while sadly that meant we didn't get what would've been likely THE definitive teen titans run, though i'm sure we'll get it some day as DC would be nuts not to let him do it, Marvel simply had an offer too tempting for him to pass up: Run the X-Men.

Something I never knew before his interviews for this era.. is that while Jonathan Hickman liked marvel... he never really read most of their comics before his runs. When he did Fantastic Four and Avengers, he studied heavily. Granted it shows how good a writer he is that it dosen't show and he clearly gained an apprceation for both. It's also a NEEDED reminder for comic book writers: YOU CAN JUST RESEARCH SOMETHING YOU DON'T KNOW. I know it sounds obvious but plenty of writers , Brian Micheal Bendis in paticular, don't seem to understand that.

For X-Men though, they were his intro into comics, the books he picked up as a kid. The playset he always wanted but during his first run at marvel the timing just never synched up. So Hickman gathered a crack team of writers and took an approach I feel most lines in comics should follow: he set up a writer's room, allowing the writers of all the books to bounce ideas off each other, which made the books better, and approach that's stuck even after he left and will hopefully.

The results of all this hard work? House of X and Powers of X, a set of two interconnected mini series that serve as essentially one big mini series setting up a brave new world for mutantkind. Hickman used the various attempted genocides on the x-men as a backdrop, including the m-pox, and another one that took place in the crappy uncanny x-men run between series that i'll no doubt have inflicted on me one day. And more importantly the fact that Mankind and most other heroes had done the bare minimum to help if that.

So the X-Men decided to once again start their own country. Except unlike previous attempts, they made an effort to become a global power, to play the game of nations. In this case they created plants that helped stave off diseases like althimerz, and leveraged them in exchange for acceptance a nation. Xavier had given up on his dream and instead had a new one: suing for peace.

If that sounds divisive.. that was the intent. That you get why the x-men are doing this, but also see that this has a real danger of them loosing their way and making shadier decisions... not helped by them offering amnesty to ALL mutants including past foes. Exploring the complexities of this is what makes this era so fantastic: the x-men are hoarding world changing advancments.. but after the world spat on them for so long while good men did nothing half the time, you can't blame them. As Cyclops expertly puts it in the first issue.

And yet many have issues with how dogmatic the ruling body of Krakoa, the quiet council is being, the shady decisions, the backdoor deals. It's a mixed blessing: Mutankind has home, saftey, wants for nothing.. but is the price tag worth it?

They also have one other thing, a secret to the world at this point: Resurrection. For years, in part thanks to seeming non mutant ally revealed to be secret mutant Moria Mactaggert, long story, and her longgame planning, Xavier had worked out a plan to cure death. It was both a way to raise the stakes.. and to just as importantly undo a LOT of crappy shock deaths for mutantkind, to bring back characters who'd been dead for DECADES and no one simply had gotten around to them. Death was over, mutantkind was truly immortal.

The process is also unique, using the five, five mutants working in concert, turning the non viable eggs made by goldballs, now dubbing himself egg, into viable clone bodies using a combination of reality warping from former foe proteus, life giving powers from elixer to make them viable, time from tempus to speed them up, and the boosting powers of Hope, the mutant messiah, to make this all possible.

So as a result, any mutant come back, mutants now had freedom and fancy organic warp gates, and a homeland on Krakoa, a mutant who as once an island that walked like a man but was now the benevloent home of all mutantkind.

So your probably wondering how all this somehow esclated FURTHER. Well that's a lot as the Hellfire Gala is the result of a few ongoing story beats all rolled together in a delicous tortilla.

The first is the gala itself. The Hellfire Club was normally the x-men's foes, a group of rich assholes who used their secret society to try and conquer the world through BUISNESSS! and other persuits. And also often wore bondage gear because Chris Claremont is not shy about his fetishes.

For Krakoa though, they became the Hellfire Trading Company. Emma Frost, teacher, x-man and 100% that bitch, had built up a huge fortune again during the meantime and was convinced by Magneto and Xavier to invest it in the children. It's a consitent thing: While Emma can be cold, has a sarcastic tounge bar none, she's always cared about the future of their species and always been protective of young mutants.

So Emma , in addition to a seat of the table, runs the BUISNESS side of things, and thus the inner circle of the hellfire trading company became the large shipping end for mutantkind. They buy the drugs, they light the fire, they are Humankind's main suplier. While other parts of krakoa focus on the growing of the life saving drugs, Emma's the one who markets and ships it, with two others to help: Kitty Pryde, her former enemy turned close friend who as head of the Marauders, lead a pirate crew of x-men to save mutants trapped in countries who didn't go for Krakoa's deal and do drug shipments, while Sebastian Shaw, king of the assholes and enemy of emmas, was given the job of smuggling. He also tried to Kill kitty suprising no one. And Emma and Kitty responded by beating the piss out of him and leaving him in a wheelchair for a while, suprising even less.

Emma being her usual extra self, decided the best way to show off their power as a nation, their wealth and what they could offer.. was a giant ass party with friend and foe alike invited. So threaded throughout the first year and a half of the marauders was Emma's plans for the Gala, with her having Magneto buy an island to host it on. It's such a character rich thing: buying a whole ass island to throw a giant party that's one part diplomatic work and one part "go fuck yourself racist assholes". It's Emma Frost.

The second part leading to all of this was a myth arc that spread through the first year of the comic. One of Mutantkind's most dreaded foes, Apocalypse.. willingly joined them and was given a sympathetic backstory: turns out his "survivial of the fittiest schtick" was because his wife had to send Krakoa's other half, Arrako, into the gates of hell to save the world, taking their children, his original four horseman, because of course Apocalypse has four horseman have you seen the man? He's not subtle.

So he inacted a plan to bring Arrako back, leading to the event X of Swords, where Arrako, taken by the demons they were fighting the amenth, planned to invade earth. Thankfully they pissed off Saturynyne, omniversal magistreix and registered asshole who turned it into a tournament arc: ten swordsman from each side, winner takes all.

Naturally this contest ran by a manevloent schemer from beyond dimensions and against demons had consequences: one of the mutants on our side, Gorgon, died, Doug Ramsey got married, and yes that was indeed a match, and storm killed the embodiment of death. Normal x-men stuff. I really don't have time to go over it all as it's 22 issues long. Not hyperbole. It's a decent if entirely bloated event.

The climax is what's important: the rules got broke, and while Xavier and Magneto's plan was to do nothing and hope it works out, sacrifcing the mutants they had trapped there, Cyclops and Jean grey said

Especially since their son Cable, a cool teen at the time, was in danger. So Cyclops gathered every mutant he could... aka PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE ON KRAKOA NOT ON THE QUIET COUNCIL to storm the gates, leading to an epic battle, and the freeing of Apocalpyse's wife genisis and his remaning kids. Apocalypse decided to have a family road trip across amenth as part of the deal, but in trade the x-men got Arakko back.

The problem was.. Arakko had just spent the last centuries fighting demons and living to eat, murder and conquest. So while Krakoa doubling size was a good thing on paper, as was the new mutants added, in practice it set off a massive political powder keg, with the Arakko mutants gleefully ransacking nearbye areas and refusing to not conquer. While the x-men were fine to inheret the earth once humanity burned itself out, the Arakko didn't want to wait. They needed somewhere to go.

So that dear friends and readers brings us to the gala itself a massive crossover event.. but a unique one. Every issue of every x-book intersected wtih the party of the summer, but only the four we're covering today were the big takeaway points. It was a fun crossover too, a way for all the books to intersect, while leaving the core trim enough to let someone just wanting the big takeaways to only have to pick up 4 books that month. I MIGHT do the rest another day but honestly besides saving kev a lot of money.. it just made more sense to just do the core storyline, to do the part you all came here for, and maybe do the other issues some other day. Thankfully future gala's are much smaller for next year and beyond.

So let's mosey on over shall we as the festivties begin.

Mauraders #24: The party kicks off naturally with Mauraders, the Hellfirecentric book. We open with Kitty, Sebastian and Emma all awaiting the guests. Emma is wearing one of three outfits she has for the night and all of mutantkind is wearing their finest.

Okay Kitty's wearing her finest, emma just has a giant cur cape with an x cut out, because her brand and what not, and a giant head piece that says NOTICE HOW RICH I AM, and Sebstian Shaw is dressed as some sort of war grandpa, wearing a suit LESS fancy than what he usually wears, but weirldy bedecked in tassles, with a fur cape and supervillian eyepatch. I mean the last part's on brand for him but all together it's just fucking weird even by the standards of this gala, held off the coast of two giant monsters.

So as Emma waits security, done by X-Force Krakoa's black ops division, lets in our first guests , fitting them with flowers so they can pass through the krakoan gates for the gala and any afterparties. The Krakoan Gates are giant flowery gates world wide that allow mutantkind to pass through them.. except kitty pryde due to how her powers work: since she goes THROUGH barriers, the thing kinda futzes out with her.

Our inaugral guests are naturally earth's mighteiest heroes, the avengers, consiting at the time of the Captain America (Steve Rogers), Iron Man (Tony Stark), Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), Thor (Odinson), She Hulk, Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes) and Blade. yes THAT blade. It's honestly a good roster I liked a lot, bringing things back to the classics while adding a few weird touches like Blade and Robbie. The run itself.. was hit and miss, paticuarlly having She Hulk as a regular hulk instead of her usual self, despite the previous run of her solo having finally gotten her out of that state.. for no clear reason really. It was just bad. Thankfully those dark times are over and the tv show's only made sure that won't be happening again. Tony flies in on his own, not trusting the tech and you know.. being kind of an asshole he has to make a bit "NOTICE ME EVERYONE" entrance. Also boarding are the world's greatest heroes, the Fantastic Four, along with their children Franklin and Valerea and The Thing's wife Alicia Masters. Things are a bit rockier between these groups so gather up people as it's time for EVEN MORE EXPOSITION

So since his introduction Franklin had been a mutant.. and since he and the team as a whole had come back in Dan Slott's run, his power had been shorting out. Krakoa, wanting to both help him and naturally add another powerful mutant to the pile, reached out, and unsuprisingly fighting insured between both sides, Reed Richards pulled a Richards and disabled his son's ablility to use the gates, Franklin ran away, ended up with Doctor Doom, and both sides settled things long enough to stop it. IT's a story I will likely cover some day and ended on a positve note: Franklin would alternate between both the baxter buildling and krakoa, while Xavier, not pleased reed had the kind of tech he did, erased the gate supression tech from his brain and told him to his face he'd done it, to tell reed "never again"

So naturally FF writer Dan Slott's reaction to this promising, engaging new status quo was to say "fuck it" and retcon that franklin just MADE HIMSELF into a mutant with his powers, once they were gone he wasn't one, and Xavier basically told him go the fuck away. It is one of the dumbest, most waasteful, egotistical, selfish moves i've seen in comics, doing this simply because you had to share idaes and plans with someone else. At the time of this writing it hasn't been undone, but I woudln't be suprised if current writer Ryan North or future writers undid this or at the very least found a good angle for it.

For now we do at least get this page.

I assume it was a smart, well thought out intellectual GO FUCK YOURSELF YOU OLD MAN. Also while i'll defend the cerebro helmet, I love the look and while the usual version wht the black jumpsuit is plain, it works for the story that's being told... this version is just.. what Iam I even looking at. The extra uncessary packs on his helmet, the gold and green, and then he has the fucking gall to say that to Franklin. I do like him bonding with Kitty, who the mini established was tight with the kind after the 80's era crossover where a younger frankllin talked a younger kitty out of unaliving herself. Another series to add to the pile.

So the party kicks off with a concert from Rhapsody, a forgotten mutant who sadly died during he one apperance in the first peter David Run of x-factor who can make people see things via music. By linking her up to some telepaths, the conert allows everyone present to participate.. except Doom whose naturally being a mopey pants about things. DOOM IS ALWAYS A MOPEY PANTS FOR HE IS DOOM!

The party then goes into full swing and we get some nice moments. ben, upon seeing a bunch of the marauders and an aim guy playing dice on a boat chastizes them.. for not telling him

While Cap and Doom have a stare down watched by celebrity guests Run the Jewels, two of my faviorite rappers in existance as a duo, Killer Mike and E-LP

Before Cap can close his eyes and count to fuck, Emma steps in to stop them, with Doom incensed at mutantkind for considering themselves superior, pot meet kettle, but we get a rare doom laugh , an da great joke when Emma, insiting the mutants haven't claimed earth..

So the party moves on. We get some specific plot beats for Mauraders itself i'll gloss over, some reunions of old friends as Northstar and Vindicator catch up, and Cap talking to his old aqunatince Henry Peter Gyrinch. For those who haven't heard of this douche... good. But since I brought him up Henry was Marvel Comics token asshole beurcrat: he was first introduced making the avengers job harder, tried to bring them to court over Scarlet Witch wanting to you know, leave, as is her right, was the head of the anti mutant witch hunts of the 80s, has joined several sense, and tried to deport all aliens on earth during Dark Reign. In short no one likes him, he's working with Orchis, the big bads of this era, surprising no one, and everyone everywhere celebrated when he died a few months after this. He's there to compare Krakoa to latveria and call steve an optimist for.. not assuming the Mutants are evil.

We also get one of the greatest scenes in comics as Emma oggles caps and plans to see america's ass up close.. only to read that she reminds him of his mother telepathically, horrifying her. Note that Cap's next solo run.. fully confirms that despite this, she STILL went for it and he was fine with it, his current girlfriend Sharon Carter being fine if he steps out as their apart for months at a time. It's cool. And yes folks, Cap has a mommy kink. And that is awesome.

We then get a nice scene of Emma gathering her staff including Jumbo Carnation, a mutant designer introduced to die during New X-Men and brought back here to do most of the fashions for this event, and Somilier, an expert mutant chef to thank them all.

Cue the fireworks.. which we'll get to shortly, but we see the reactions of everyone: All the bigots in attendence are rattled, as is Doctor Strange, who understandably needs to duck out to figure out what the hell this means, and Tony, who congradulates Cyclops on solving one problem.. but warns him he might of made an even bigger mess. But this being steve rogers he also ends his stern warning on "I just hope you know what you people are doing". He's worreid sure, they just conquered mars and knows what the backlash will be.. but he also is aware they likely know what their doing and as always has faith in the best in people.

Onto X-Men

X-Men #21

While the Hellfire Gala kicked off and continued a lot of exciting bits of the Krakoan Era it also marked a major ending: The final issue of Jonathan Hickman's ongoing X-Men title, with the previous one having set up his proper exit with Inferno later that year.

Hickman's X-Men was the flagship title for the books, a series of one to two issue stories that set up the world of Krakoa and showed off how this nation worked.

And naturally for the viewpoint character, Hickman picked the very first x-man and one of mutantkind's finest, Cyclops. Scotty needed the rub. Since AvX a chunk of X-Books had demonized him as some form of boogie man. While his killing of Charles xavier was shocking.. it was also while he was posssed by the phoenix force, and thus not in full control of his actions. Most characters.. blamed him for it anyway despite there being no logic and treated him as Magneto JR for the crimes of... saving mutants from racists trying to attack them and doing what he was doing. This was compounded by the aformentioned M-Pox era, which killed him off after he FINALLY got everyone's accpetance back.. and once again treated him like a villian for... destroying a cloud of terrgin mist that was killing his people.

He then got brought back from the dead after his teenage counterpart brought from the future, long story that.. but was plopped into that awful uncanny run.

Scotty needed a break, so thankfully Hickman took a special intrest in scott. It helped that with Xavier back and back allegedly doing the right thing, Scott could take a night off of being the leader of all of mutantkind and just enjoy having his dead wife back, a son that's not older with him and presumably regular threesomes with wolverine, who not only is ALSO dating Jean during this era, but lived in Scotts house on the moon. Also , Scott had a house on the moon.

With Hickman leaving though, Scott needed a new direction and Hickman set it up for him on his way out in the aftermath of x of swords. Scott, who was the leader of Krakoa's great captains (their security and people authorized to form a team for whatever threats face this sacred land), and Jean , who was on the quiet council rulling Krakoa, were both utterly fed up with the council's bullshits, from refusing to resurrect Scott's ex wives or any clones period, to sketchy rulings like the one in X of Swords. The two decided there had to be something outside them and that Krakoa still needed heroes.

See while the book was called x-men, Hickman cleverly got away with not actually having a formal team for his tenure. Scott and Jean stepped down to change that, founding a new team. The premise was genius: the team would last for one year in and out of universe, a tour of duty, and be picked entirely by Krakoa itself at the gala.

As a sweet bonus to this already great concept, Marvel left some of the voting up to real life: while most of the team was picked by incoming writer Gerry Duggan, the last member was left up to the fans, a tradition that carried onto the next to galas. In this case Polaris, longtime x-man, twice time x-factor leader, and daughter of magneto won.

We open issue 24 with a followup to something from House and Powers of X: During the mini when building Krakoa Xavier and Magneto approached Namor, prince of the deep, to join the nation. He refused as he had a powerful empire thanks.. and once again refuses when they approach him at the party. They control an island. he controls 75 of the oceans. Call him when you have something more to offer. This plot thread.. never really went anywhere, as Namor turned himself in at the end of Jason Aaron's run on avengers and Atlantis was a non factor by the time the latest gala ended in a bloodbath. We do get this outfit for my boy magneto

Unlike Charles who.. I sitll don't get what he's going for, Erik pulls it off. It also begs the question WHY charles wore his big ass helmet to the party. Max had a WAY cooler helemet that matched his outfit and went with a bitching top hat chuck, what's your excuse.

We then get right to the point: the X-Men vote. And how it's done.. is endlessly cool. Jean telepahtically reaches out to every mutant everywhere.. and the vote happens. The Human Torch is a bit confused... partly because he's not sure how his rap went down

But mostly because he dosen't know what the heck their doing. Dr. Strange fills him in.

It's a truly awesome way to do it too: it not only left a nice hook for the series, as each person's pitch is shown over the course of Duggan's first year on the title, it's just a neat concept and way to do it. As for who made the cut...

This is such a cool page. I love it dearly. It helps the x-men picked for duty all got great gala outfits, from Rogues which resembles her first uniform, to Shrio's dope as hell suit and wearing his sunfire mask because why wouldn't you if your mask was that sweet, to synch's techincolor suit it's awesome.

So a breakdown of this roster for those less familiar with the x-men. Besides Cyclops, Jean and Rogue, who shoudlnt' need an intro, we have Wolverine, Laura Kinney, also known as X-23, wolverin'es female clone and certified badass, Sunfire, an arrogant frenemy of the x-men's with fire powers and a proud japanese heritage, the aformentioned polaris and Synch, a member of generation x, the 90's class of teenage x-men, recently ressurected after spending a thousand years in a vault. Long story. It's a stellar roster and while Duggan's first year on the book was rocky, it can't be denied this was a great choice for his first for the most part. My only gripe is a lack of diversity, with only two members of the team who aren't white. Otherwise it's a good selection.

So after this we get two pages of Sinsiter being a gossipy bitch before we get to the ending of this issue, a truly amazing scene with a bit of meta flare. A tad cheesy.. but the kind of cheese I like.

So after another cameo by Patton Oswalt, as seen by RTJ the gala had a lot of real life celbreity cameos thrown in, all approved by the people themselves, Kevin Fiege, head of marvel asks Scott a simple question

Is it a tad cheesy to have the head of marvel literally ask a character whose key to their next big franchise his story? Yes.. but I can't help but love it. It's just a fun way to have Cyclops give his story and given marvel comics actually exists in universe, it's not a stretch to say some form of the mcu does either, simply running on the same "offical authorized story" deal they have with most heroes, changing it up for ones whose id's aren't public.

Due to image limits and not wanting to overdue it, the speech stretches over two full pages, i'll have to due with quoting it. But it's one of my faviorite moments of this era so far, and it gets to the heart of who scott summers is NOW.. and just who he is.

"I was blind. Blind to how the world worked...and then I met a man who taught me to see—see how things really were. I loved him for it. And because I loved him—because I believed in him...and, in a way, worshipped him—I claimed things that he had faith in as my own. He called it his dream. It was a good one. But the world, you see—the waking world—were we all live...it is a killer of dreams. A destroyer of things you believe in. So when I grew older, I realized it was foolish to...deify him. Honestly, it's unfair to expect that kind of perfection from anyone. After all, we're all flawed and imperfect... There is no real difference between any of us. No matter how much we believe the lie that there is. You see, he wasn't a savior. Scott is the guy who belviies in Xavier's dream more than the man himself, and while he sidestepped it for a while, as the world wore him down.. he never truly gave up on it.. and he'll never stop fighting for it. So as Scott walks off Emma cues the fireworks.

Planet Size X-Men

So before I get into this one , some context: When this issue happened.. what the fireworks were.. was a suprise. It was kept deathly secret and the reactions seen in marauders were a tease the x-men had done something MASSIVE. While for our purposes here you know the twist I just wanted the context for readers that the x-men colonizing a whole damn planet.. was a massive well done suprise. IT's something this era does well: it hides spoilers VERY well and even when some info has to come out via solicits, it does a great job not telling us everything.

So we open the issue with the reveal of what their doing: The narration is a flashback to someone talking to Forge, the x-men's resident inventor, about IF what their about to do before our eyes is possible. And to start they need a ton of iron, and to plunge it into the planet, then get it nice and hot.

The first part.. is easy given the master of magnet is around and we get a lovely shot of Magneto hauling a giant meteor. This issue's done by Duggan with art by Pepe Laraz, who also did art for House of X and is a phenominal artist, so he not suprisingly knocks it out of the park here. Using the metal they open the planet and as forge puts it "perform open heart surgery" using a team of Hope and Vulcan, Scott Summer's youngest brother who has energy powers> They get it bubbly, Max stirs the sauce with his powers.. and next up is Iceman, who proudly announces himself to the party, whose all viewing this telepathically thanks to Emma Frost

We then flash back to a few days ago. Magneto TRIES to talk some sense into Iscaa the unbeaten, annoyed at the Arakkil shenanigans I mentioned before, but she's unmoved. As long as their of this planet, they'll act as they have and conquer. This likely gave Max the idea.

And his timing for it isn't bad as the Hellfire Trading Company have another problem: their suplies for the lifesaving drugs are running out. The X-Men were doing most of their production in the savage land, a land where dinosaurs never died out, but the super science golden girls stole most of it, so they REALLY need a new place for production. Mags asks to borrow Emma's spaceship.. and prepares his pitch.

The next day Cap and Cyclops talk at westchester, with Cyclops assuring Cap there's a solution to the arakko problem, which gets him to come to the gala. Max pitches his plan to the quiet council and it's a rare unanmous "YES".

Cut to the morning of the gala and while Mags has a lot of the pieces he needs.. he needs more. So he first goes to Jamie Braddock, brother of Bestsy (Formerly Psylocke now Captain Britan) and Brian (also Captain Britan), and half mad reality warper, who Mags convinces to help out. He also goes to Arakko and their own council happens to have three Omega Level Mutants (Mutants with no upper limit to their powers, something firmly defined in this era after being vauge for years on end), who fit the bill: Lacuta the Knower, Sobunar of the Depths, and Xilo the first defender of this broken land.

Back in present day Sobunar goes first: Sobunar contains an ENTIRE ocean within them, so they simply donate a little water and have jamie expand it into an ocean. Storm captalizes on this, using her powers to the strongest they've ever been to give the planet weather, giving the dead red planet wind for the first time.

Next up is Xilo, who.. tears off his head and combines with the land.. he's also a caterpillar. Because why not. With Elixer's help he restores life leaving the next step for the final member of our trio, Lacuta. Her power.. is knowing the precise location of everything. So using her , Jean Grey and exodus, a centuries old telepath bar NONE, shove the ENTIRETY of arakko through the external gate, a magical super krakoan gate, to mars.

WIth that Arakko is on here.. and Arakko itself, which like krakoa is alive, sighs happily at it's first bloodless victory in a long while. A diplomatic area is set up as is a memorial to honor those who could not make it

The downside of the review format is I really can't show you just how awe inspiring all this is. I do have images an dcan show you some of it but the compression here and how much this issue makes use of the full page makes it impossible to translate. It's why while my reviews are good on their own merit, they'll never be a subsitute for the media in question.

So after this Arakko needs it's own SWORD station. SWORD was once the space verison of SHIELD, but with SHIELD ending and Earth's own space branch, alpha flight, being laughably ineffective, former SWORD head Abigail brand went to mutantkind fo ra space program, resulting in their revivail. And since they need a base here, Jean and Quinten Quire, professional loveable scamp, implant the idea of one in his mind. Jean says she's making him pregnant with it.. and soon regrets her word choice

I... didn't doctor any of this. All of this actually happened. Jean Grey made a man pregnant with a space station. That's canon. That's part of this landmark in x-history. God bless you X-Slack, one and all.

Elixer has one last idea.. and this time it's just transmitted to prevent more of .. that... so Jamie gladly obliges, creating port promethus, a massive hub for all the space ships a comin. With that all of Krakoa is welcomed to..

With that we get some data pages, a bold announcment proclaming this the captial of our solar system, a person in the goverment reporting, and nasa being disapointed by mutantkind just anexing the planet but hoping they can visit.

And before we move on to the direct ramifications in story.. let's talk about those fireworks shall we? The Terraforming of Mars into Planet Arakko.. is one of the biggest, genius and insane swings i've seen in a comic. It's all perfectly built up too: from the beginning of this era i'ts been built up how much power omega mutants have, how much stronger krakoa can be it's ties to space via the shiar and brood. And over in SWORD, which had recently launched and will close out today's look at the gala, they subtly laid the seeds: SWORD had been further pushing the idea of a "mutant circuit", i.e. using a group of mutants in concert to do a task, the first being of course the five and SWORD having a circuit in it's first issue bring a super metal from beyond time and space. The idea of seeing just what mutants could do with their powers and a whole nation had been seeded... it's here it sprouts. In what's implied to be an hour at most, with the world watching, mutantkind terraformed a dead planet. While both terriotires had different goverments the fact remained mutantkind now had a PLANET.

It's also nice in that even if Krakoa as a nation tumbles into history... this is something that really CAN'T be easily undone: Mutantkind created a new planet stuffed with mutants, where alien dignitaries have visited, and that humankind will NEVER forget happened. Even if it all collapsed the sheer scope of it is something that can't help but have impact. It's the kind of status quo shift you could ONLY pull off in this era, with these characters, at this time, a perfect allinging of the planets... to let another be reborn.

It also has a lot of nice fallout that's still being felt: A whole book would end up dedicated to this new concept, X-Men Red, which is one of the best of this era and one of the best x-books period, and it's not even over yet. We'll likely look at that next year, or at least part of it, but the idea of this warbased society grappling with peace is fascinating as is humanity grappling with loosing one of it's biggest pieces of the sky. There's so much that's been done with this concept, so much more to do and it's one of my faviorite in the x-men's long history of awesome ideas and was brought about stunningly, with the issue being one long showstopper. They hyped the hell out of this one moment.. and man oh man did they deliver. All that's left.. is the afterparty.

S.W.O.R.D. #7

SWORD opens with Captain america, standing alone reflecting his thoughts. This opening is one of th emain reasons I wanted sword as part of this: this scene helpfully frames what happened from a human perspective, by showing how the best of us grapples with what just happened. And also DOOM, who'd tell you he was but you know DOOM. Cap decides to humor him this once and share his thoughts.. mostly because Victor points out they are both faces of their nations and the weird irony of that tickles our hero a bit. The speech that follows.. is gorgeous, showing that SWORD, and future x-men red, writer Al Ewing, one of my personal faviorite writers, REALLY gets cap. I mean he really gets pretty much any character he rights but still.

Cap relates the story of his waking up from the ice. How soon after.. he felt hopless, a shocking thing to hear from Captain I Can Do This All Day, but understandable: Everything he knew and loved was gone and he'd missed decades. Tony gave him hope by showing the moon landing, showing how much humanity achieved.. but got quiet when Steve asked where the colonies were... what had come NEXT. It's a sad statment on the fact we just kinda.. gave up on space after realizing it was too expensive to exploit.

I belivie in a better tommorow is a cap line up there with classics like "I'm loyal to nothing except the dream" and "No you move", and this scene is expertly done: it shows the two sided coin: Steve is well aware humanity kind of gave up on mars and other planets aside from mapping them, but still wishes they'd worked together.. instead of their next iteration swooping in and taking it all. It's the lovely double edged sword of this all: The Mutants had every right to do this: they had the power, the technology and the need. But it still means they took it for themselves and only themselves.

So while Cap muses about this and Doom heads off to do Doom stuff, we cut to SWORD"s station the Peak where director Abigail Brand, who nick fury wishes he could be, is explaning the situation to a council of galactic ambassadors from very marvel races and factions. Notable faces include Orbis Stellaris, who'd become VERY important soon enough, a guy named Riitho representing the interglactic empire of wakanda, a real thing that exists, long story I don't quite know to be honest, Smasher, former avenger, wife of x-man and former avenger Cannonball, and representive for longtime x-men space buddies the shiar, paibok the power skrull representing the kree skrull alliance and three of the guardians of the galaxy: Star Lord represnting his in comics half home of spartax, Noh Varr aka marvel boy represtning the Utopian Kree and Richard Rider , the man called nova representing earth. Ewing adopted Richie who'd come back from the dead but hadn't got a lot to do, making him a focal point of his run on Guardians and then bringing him over to X-Men Red after that.

Richie in paticular is nettled they didn't tell anyone, and while Frenzy, part of SWORD's security, points out he was kinda busy with guardains stuff.. he still has a point: While Krakoa coudln't afford to tell EVERYONE or someone would've tried to stop them, and they DID need this space... they didn't tell ANYONE they were doing this.

The rest of the delegates are ambivalent: For humanity , mutantkind terraforming a whole planet is a big whoop. And while the SPEED is impressive, terraforming a planet is pretty standard procedure for the empires present.

Thankfully Mutankind brought Abigail brand to the negotating table: she's lived in space her whole life, knows it better than earth, and her whole reason for restarting sword is that she's sick of earth being so ambiviliant and reactionary: they've been invaded COUNTLESS times.. yet the heroes wait. In the previously reviewed epilogue to empire/gay wedding of the century, she quit Alpha Flight entirley because head at the time Carol Danvers.. didn't think to consult her or anyone abotu the crisis and instead cried avengers assemble.

So she decides to take a page from the krakoan book with some space flair: like Krakoa, Arakko won't be recognized without something to give and since the healing plants aren't really a huge get, she has something more: Mysterium,. the metal they plucked from the white hot center of the omniverse.

It's a COOL as hell call back: why did they plunder time and space.. not because they could. .but to get the sol system a foot in the galactic door. See at the time of this run, something running out of Ewing's guardians run as Al ewing tends to use every book he writes to follow up on others, Ewing had the clever idea of the galactic community being in a pretty crappy place: after so many wars, sieges, and attempted conquests, they were battered and the economy suffered. Mysterium... is the answer. Expensive, as seen here super useful for space travel and recovery after all the nonsense the unvierse has been put through.. and a perfect Bribe. Abigail is upfront about it too: as I said this is the same as Krakoa using the drugs and Abby says that outright: a new currency to help the unvierse recover.. in exchange for recognition. Abby's logic is also flawless here: Earth.. has a ton of nations, their all squabbling and generally can't agree on how to treat their own people much less aliens. Arakko is one goverment and thus allows them to simply negotiate with them instead.

Naturally though for a confrence like this.. someone has to ask...

I said he had doom stuff to do.... I didn't say said stuff wasn't in this issue did I? Doom demands to know: who speaks for sol. Given how Victor is, tyranicall and very personality based, he demands an audience with it's rule: who is it's king. Who is it's monarch. And naturally for this story... the answer is badass as hell. It's also the answer every X-Men fan predicted, but it's no less awesome

It's a perfect choice: Storm really hadn't done much in this era up to this point... but in interviews HIckman and others constantly said they had more plans for her and "great stuff coming up". This is the payoff: Storm is once again a queen... and a perfect fit. She's peaceful enough to lead the arakkil in a new direction.. but she's still storm. It's part of what makes Orroro such a great character: she can be gentle, kind and fair.. but god help you if you think you can win a fight with her. And given Roro now has to deal with both a planet of warmongers AND various galactic empires ready to try to exploit this, not to mention eventually Abigail herself trying to exploit this for her own ends, a LOT of people are going to need god's help.

This conversation continues into the next issue, but for our story, the end is not on the grand new red planet.. but back on Krakoa. Magneto is quitely having a drink to himself.. and has a guest.

So one last bit of backstory for this run, for the non comic guys in the audience, hi kevin and such: In the comics Wanda, during a mental breakdown after being manpulated by her own brother, depowered all but 200 of mutantkind. Give or take obviously because comics, but still most were left powerless thanks to her. Wanda DID do her best to atone once she returned much later, helping restore mutantkind.. but instead of undrestanding she wasn't in her right headspace, no one thought "hey let's get her a threapist instead of try to kill her".. no really that was the storyline. Bendis I swear.

Anyway, instead Mutantkind turned her into the boogeyman

Yes a bogeyman, "The PRetender" as it was later revealed she wasn't a mutant because marvel didn't have rights to them at the time. And while I do wish this era had turned her back into one.. the directoin they went was clever.. and this scene is part of it. Wanda comes to her once thought to be bio dad: she skipped the party because well.. she knows what they say and the pretender can't sit at the throne.

Magneto's response? one of the best moment's in the characters history and clear proof of why Ewing was given the character for X-Men Red not long after

It's a heartbreaking well done speech.. and honestly an angle for helping undo the hasty unparenting of Magneto I never considered: Keeping Wanda not a mutant.. but having Magnus still consider her his child. Have him realize after buildling paradise.. that he'd been a pretty crappy father to her, even if he turned out not to be his dad, how he wasn't much better to his biological daughter Lorna. and That even if she's seen as the pretender.. that Wanda is his kid and deserves better. It's also a nice aseop: that you don't NEED to be biologically related ot be family. She's his daughter. End of dicussion. And he will fix this

The how ended up being convoluted, but did result in Wanda going from the pretender, to the redeemer by setting up the waiting room, a way to bring back mutants who didn't have an imprint in cerebro. It's a touching end to this story.. I mean granted the story ACTUALLY ends with magneto suspected of her murder, but it'ts not where we're ending

The Hellfire Gala is one of my faviorite comics events. IT's a unique take on one: instead of a big fight or a big crisis.. it's just a party. It still has all the gravitas and after effects: Wanda's very temporary death leading to her excellent new era under Steve Orlando, the start of Magneto's character arc for X-Men red, a whole new setting with vast ramifications, a new team, and lots of other smaller setups. It's no suprise they did it again the next two years. It's a story packed with both the fun breezy character moment's you'd expect like Emma discovering steve's mommy kink or RTJ getting ready to watch doom fight steve all day, or gambling time, and the big stuff needed to justify it being an event, all organically threaded from here.

We'll no doubt return to krakoa and I already have plans to return to the x-men next year. For now though... we've reached the end of x-men month. As we enter spooky season.. thank you for reading, my x-men.

I love this AU a lot, this was a canvas skecth I wanted because it's been in my head for months, making them all in mafia is very dearly to me. I love the mafia theme and WH is no difference!

Mari, is a psychopath, she has to be kept isolated in a room with a straight jacket(she will kill anyone regardless of morality). The way to make her calm down is by using sleeping pills or eletrocution(which is also used if she fucks up). She is used as a key to find information(she will torture the enemy until they say something) and as a killing machine. She is refered by Benny as the ''Bone Twister'' not because she's gets in the most uncomfortable positions but also, because she is used to twisting peoples arms,legs and necks if they get too close.(there are few exceptions to this). She's inspired by Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad.

Venus, is 'the sidekick lady'. She uses her looks to get what she wants, if denied bang!bang! She's very good with shooting guns but, she prefers to use her knife or poison her enemies. She hides mutiple weapons under her dress,just in case she need to kill someone. She is after lsrge quantities of money,she doesn't like much to talk or have feelings over any man. She considers herself an independent women with disgust towards men.

Benny, is 'the guns guys'. He is the guy that handles all the guys in a safe room and keeps them charged,he also is in charged of sending messages and trades. However, he's not really compitent athis job as he spend 99% of the time flirting with everyone instead of focusing on his damn job,(he's inspired by Chaz of Helluva Boss)

Cloud, the so refered ''Feral beast''. Mari's youngest simbling who has a feral stage very often, has to be tamed by Benny. Cloud only calms down when he's close to his sister or when tased(the same way they eletrocute Mari if she looses control). He can be compared with a dog with rabbies,both are pretty unstable although,Mari talks and can be easier to communicate with if you form a bond with her.

Ms Magne: she’s got vibes like freshly spun silk, wrapped around a bottle of perfectly chilled red wine sitting in a candle lit room, scent of cookies and pulpurie wafting gently In the air. Everything about this women’s vibes is decidant and sweet in a very, motherly, wealthy widow way.

Toga: everything about her is excitable, always moving. Her vibes are like a hummingbird in a flower filled garden, bouncing too and throw trying to avoid the rain. Like a catchy pop love song with that foot bounce ability. Always in the back of your vision bouncing along the beat. Think one if those 2000 pop songs that went in all the amvs (like ‘I’m in heaven when you kiss me’)

Mr C: Sako’s vibes are somehow a mixture of the two, the sweet adult decadence of Magne with the unpausable energy of a woodpecker like vibes of Toga, however, unlike Ms Magne, Sako doesn’t have compitant adult vibes. His vibes are wine uncle vibes, that one uncle that’s always on the boarder of surviving, he has the best stories but no one’s sure how his survived to tell the tale.

Mustard: the vibes of a scorpion sitting in the sun, waiting for the right opportunity to strike its prey, might be small, but assume it’s helpless at your own peril.

Jin: Jin’s got the vibes of the first ray of sunshine after a rainstorm, he shines all the brighter because of the storm that came before him. Loving and warm vibes abound.

Shu: pine, smoked meat and car oil, while simultaneously having strong Comic-Con vibes, it’s a strange mixture of vibes shu holds. Like, he has the vibes of a friendly gym guy that got bullied for being a geek when he was small. Nerd energy abound but more of s defender of the other nerds then a true focused geek geek energy anymore.

Dabi: the vibes of a vengeance! Legitimately, this guys devoted himself to being the arm of karma, he may still be a human presence but only barley, he doesn’t eat, doesn’t sleep and doesn’t even move without thinking of his purpose. Think a tiger just before it strikes, low in the grass, eyes focused on its prey with pin point precision. In that moment nothing else exists but the kill.

Kurogiri: ironically, the vibes of a snowman after the clouds have moved away. Beautiful and friendly in the moment but you know as soon as the sun touches him he’ll be gone. And you’ll be left staring at the last place he once stood.

Mura: Jack skeleton’s lament vibes maybe, or more perhaps more accurately; Alucard vibes. Dangerous: definitely, king: certainly, monster: proud to be. He knows what he is and has no illusions, charismatic chaos king vibes. If dabi has the vibes of vengeance, Tomura’s vibes are that of the grimmreapers scyth, a weapon created for a singular purpose. However, it’s capable of far more then just the purpose it was created for, and as long as you’re on the side that’s weilding him you’re set.

A "Ballerina/Leap!" fan music video tribute, with Troublemaker Studios' movie "Uglydolls" song "Broken & Beautiful", performed by Kelly Clarkson and written by Marshmello, Steve Mac, Johnny McDaid and P!nk. 

This was my entry video for a favorite character contest hosted by the editor DannyPhantomSG1 in the heroine category. I was working on it when my computer started shuting down all the time (thanks computer) and how the things have been going currently with the lockdown, it took sometime before my family could send it to repairing, that was nothing more than a fan cleaning. So, my video didn't make it after the contest was done, anyway I was compiting alongside great editors so, I think I wouldn't win *shrugs*. But I wanted to upload it because I'm so proud of it!

I haven’t saw the Uglydolls movie yet, just scenes, but while searching for the perfect music for this video, I heard this song and I found out it totally fits Félicie. Félicie is my current, very favorite character. She's so wholesome, full of life, joyful, resiliant, strong and affectionate. She radiates so much happiness that in my worse days she's like a warm breeze that blows any gray cloud away. She worked hard in her dream (despite some of her procastinating behaviour) Also, we can't forget she's just a girl, discovering how the world works and how it is like to hang out with people. She deserves all the love and the happy ending she got, because, after all she's not perfect, she's broken and a bit defective, but that's what makes her special, how unique she is and how willing she is to change and mend her mistakes.

El CEO de Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, cuya demanda antimonopolio de alto perfil contra Apple está ahora bajo apelación, está hoy llamando el fabricante de iPhone por darse acceso a un espacio publicitario que sus competidores no tienen: la pantalla de configuración del iPhone. Sweeney había estado retuiteando otra publicación del analista de Mobile Dev Memo Eric Seufert, quien compartía una imagen atribuida al cofundador de Glassfy Francesco Zucchetta.

Zucchetta le dice a TechCrunch que vio el anuncio en un iPhone 8 que tenía con iOS 15. Pero otros también han visto los anuncios en dispositivos más nuevos. Y algunos encuestados señalaron que estaban recibiendo Las promociones de Apple también son notificaciones push.

El problema aquí es complicado porque la promoción no siempre es una situación en la que Apple está perjudicando a un rival para su propio beneficio.

El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 es el tablet más avanzado de Samsung. Cuenta con pantalla Super AMOLED de 10.5″, procesador Snapdragon 855, 6/8 GB de RAM, 128/256 GB de almacenamiento, cámara trasera dual de 13MP (gran angular) y 5MP (ultra gran angular), cámara frontal de 8MP y batería de 7.040 mAh con carga rápida.

Diseño y construcción

El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 es uno de los tablets más ligeros y delgados que puedes encontrar en el mercado. Con un grosor de tan solo 5,7 mm, el nuevo tablet de Samsung es más fino que casi cualquier smartphone y tablet que conozcamos.

Su peso de 420 gramos también es bastante reducido, por lo que apenas notas que lo llevas en la mochila o el bolso. Tampoco resulta incómodo cuando lo sujetas en la mano o lo llevas bajo el brazo.

El tablet de Samsung está construido enteramente en metal con acabados en colores Cloud Blue (azul), Mountain Gray (gris) y Rose Blush (rosa), aunque este último no parece estar a la venta en España.

En mi opinión, el Galaxy Tab S6 es uno de los tablets más atractivos que podemos encontrar en el mercado. Su superficie metálica con acabado mate se mantiene bastante limpia y no atrae apenas las huellas.

  En el lado derecho del tablet encontramos el botón de encendido y justo debajo está el botón alargado de volumen. Algo más abajo se encuentra la ranura para la tarjeta de memoria micro-SD y la tarjeta nano-SIM si has optado por el modelo con conectividad celular.

  En el lado izquierdo, encontramos unos conectores tipo POGO pins que permiten acoplar la funda con teclado BookCover de la que hablaremos más adelante. Estos conectores también permiten cargar el tablet con un accesorio de carga.

  En el lado superior hay dos altavoces y, en lado inferior, otros dos, por lo que en total tenemos cuatro altavoces.

  En la parte inferior encontramos también un conector USB Tipo-C pero no hay rastro del conector de auriculares, que no está presente.

  El frontal del Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 está dominado por su gran pantalla rodeada por unos marcos bastante estrechos, en torno a 9 mm. de anchura, que permiten sujetar el tablet con comodidad. El tablet ofrece un buen aprovechamiento del espacio, con un ratio de pantalla a cuerpo de un 83% según GSM Arena.

La pantalla está protegida por Gorilla Glass 3, una versión algo antigua de la conocida protección para cristal, por lo que me hubiera gustado ver una variante más reciente. En todo caso, un tablet no suele estar tan expuesto como un smartphone.

El Galaxy Tab S6 es compatible con el puntero S Pen y, de hecho, en la parte de atrás encontramos una hendidura donde podemos colocarlo y se sujeta magnéticamente. Mientras está apoyado, el S Pen se carga de manera inalámbrica. Encima de esta hendidura se encuentra la cámara doble trasera, que sobresale ligeramente de la superficie.

El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 no cuenta con resistencia al polvo y al agua, por lo que debemos tener cuidado para que no se moje. Un tablet no es un dispositivo que tenga tanto peligro de caer al agua como un smartphone pero sería una protección interesante para poder usar el dispositivo en la piscina o en la bañera para ver vídeos, leer o navegador por Internet.

Pantalla

El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 cuenta con una pantalla Super AMOLED de 10.5″ con resolución WQXGA (2500 x 1600 píxeles), lo que supone una densidad de píxeles de 287 ppp, un poco por encima de los 264 ppp de la pantalla Retina de los iPad aunque no vas a notar la diferencia.

Aunque en un móvil solemos exigir una densidad de píxeles algo superior, un tablet se ve a una distancia mayor, así que esta densidad es más que suficiente.

El ratio de pantalla 16:10 es más alargado de lo que solemos encontrar en otros tablets. Este ratio permite disfrutar mejor de películas y vídeos pero resulta menos práctico para tareas de productividad, navegar por Internet, etc.

Los paneles Super AMOLED de Samsung son de lo mejorcito que podemos encontrar en smartphones, por lo que es una maravilla disponer de una pantalla así en un tablet de 10.5″.

Las pantallas OLED ofrecen colores negros profundos, un contraste muy elevado y un gamut de color amplio. Además, su consumo de energía es inferior al de los paneles LCD, especialmente con el modo oscuro de Android 10.

La matriz de sub-píxeles del Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 es de tipo Pentile, como es habitual en los paneles OLED. En este tipo de pantallas los sub-píxeles rojo, verde y azul se disponen en formas geométricas en lugar de estar uno a continuación de otro de forma alineada como ocurre en los paneles RGB.

Matriz Pentile de la pantalla del Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

  La pantalla del Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 es el primer tablet que soporta HDR10+, el formato que mejora el rango dinámico del estándar HDR y que está impulsado principalmente por la propia Samsung, pero no soporta Dolby Vision.

El formato HDR10+ compite con Dolby Vision, que en la actualidad es el formato HDR con metadatos dinámicos más extendido. HDR10+ solo está disponible en Amazon Prime Video, mientras que Dolby Vision es soportado por Netflix, Amazon y otras.

A continuación, vamos a ver los resultados de un conjunto de pruebas de pantalla realizados con el software profesional CalMAN Ultimate y un colorímetro X-Rite i1Display Pro.

En primer lugar, conviene saber que Samsung ofrece únicamente dos modos de color: Natural e Intenso. El modo Natural es el que refleja los colores de forma más natural tanto en el gamut estándar sRGB como en el más amplio gamut DCI P3, mientras que el modo Intenso está pensado para producir colores más vibrantes aunque más irreales.

Los tablets anteriores de Samsung proporcionaban modos de color fijos para varios gamuts de color. Sin embargo, el Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 ofrece gestión automática del color.

Esto significa que cambia automáticamente al gamut de colores adecuado al mostrar un contenido de imagen que tenga un perfil ICC que se encuentre dentro del amplio espacio de color soportado por pantalla OLED, de modo que las imágenes se ven con los colores correctos, ni sobre-saturados ni infra-saturados en el modo Natural.

  En el modo Natural, la fidelidad de color es excelente ya que el error medio al mostrar contenidos sRGB resulta ser muy bajo, 2.2 dE (un valor por debajo de 4 dE se considera excelente y por encima de 9 se considera inaceptable), y el error máximo resulta ser 5.9 dE, un valor también ajustado.

La temperatura de color de la pantalla en el modo Básico es 6.322ºK, bastante cerca del nivel de referencia de 6.500ºK, lo que implica un color blanco puro sin apenas tinte de color.

  El modo Intenso muestra los colores sobresaturados. A pesar de que los colores sean irreales, mucha gente prefiere ver colores más intensos, aunque no sean fieles a la realidad. Este modo tiene además la ventaja de que permite utilizar el tablet bajo el sol más cómodamente, ya que bajo una luz intensa los colores pierden fuerza.

Debido al exceso de saturación de los colores que hemos comentado, la fidelidad de color del modo Intenso respecto al gamut sRGB es más baja. El error medio resulta ser 6.2 dE y el error máximo resulta ser también elevado, 15.6 dE, respecto a sRGB.

La temperatura de color es 6.781ºK, algo por encima del nivel de referencia de 6.500ºK, lo que implica un cierto tono azulado. Existe cierta tendencia de los fabricantes a hacer que sus pantallas azuleen ya que, instintivamente, los colores cálidos se asocian a cosas antiguas (como un papel viejo) y los colores fríos a cosas modernas.

Por suerte, Samsung ha añadido un ajuste de color blanco llamado Balance de color que permite alterar el nivel de rojo, verde y azul de la pantalla. De esta forma podemos reducir el nivel de azul y acercarnos bastante al valor ideal de 6.500ºK.

  El brillo máximo del Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 con el brillo automático desactivado es de unos 306 nits, pero al activar el modo de brillo automático se tiene acceso al modo de alto brillo que nos ha permitido medir un brillo de 492 nits bajo una luz intensa. Este valor está algo por encima de los 450 nits que medimos en el Galaxy Tab S5e.

Estas pruebas se han realizado, como es habitual, con la pantalla totalmente en blanco. Si en lugar de mostrar toda la pantalla en blanco, reducimos la superficie blanca a un rectángulo que ocupe un 10% de la superficie (siendo el resto de color negro), el brillo del área iluminada se dispara y alcanza, en mis pruebas, 577 nits (el brillo máximo de una pantalla OLED depende de la cantidad de píxeles encendidos).

En esta gráfica comparativa reflejamos el valor de brillo máximo con la pantalla al 100% en color blanco, ya que es la forma habitual de medir y comparar el brillo de una pantalla.

  El valor máximo de brillo con la pantalla iluminada al 100% es elevado para un tablet, más aún tratándose de una pantalla OLED. Estos paneles no destacan en brillo frente a los LCD cuando la pantalla es totalmente blanca, pero sí que lo hacen en entornos mixtos con píxeles blancos, negros y de otros colores.

El color negro es muy profundo, hasta el punto de que el colorímetro ha sido incapaz de medir ningún nivel de brillo. Esto significa que los negros son realmente negros y el contraste es, teóricamente, infinito. Una ventaja de un color negro tan profundo es que, al ver una película, las franjas negras alrededor de la imagen se ven completamente negras. Además, los píxeles de color negro no consumen batería.

Las pantallas OLED tienen un comportamiento peculiar al ser observadas desde un ángulo. Por un lado los emisores de luz están más cerca de la superficie, y esto hace que el contraste y el brillo varíen menos al desplazarnos respecto al centro, pero por otro lado la matriz Pentile provoca que los colores se distorsionen.

En el caso del Galaxy Tab S6, los ángulos de visión son amplios y los colores solo se ven ligeramente verdes cuando observas la pantalla desde un ángulo muy extremo.

  Una característica que no está presente en la pantalla del Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 es la función Always On Display (Pantalla Siempre Activa). Esta funcionalidad está presente en muchos smartphones y muestra permanentemente información relevante en la pantalla.

Lo que sí que está presente es la funcionalidad de filtro de luz azul que reduce la fatiga ocular limitando la cantidad de luz azul que emite la pantalla. Es posible establecer un horario para cuando quieras utilizar el filtro o configurar que se active del anochecer al amanecer.

Aunque hemos leído que el filtro de color azul interfiere con el lector de huella bajo la pantalla, esto parece haber sido solucionado en alguna actualización software ya que yo no he tenido ningún problema.

Samsung también ha añadido un modo Noche que activa un modo oscuro en la interfaz y las apps de Samsung. Ahora bien, las apps de terceros no se ven afectadas por este modo, por lo que el resultado no es tan bueno como nos gustaría. Tendremos que esperar a que reciba Android 10 para tener un modo oscuro de verdad.

Hardware y rendimiento

El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 llega con un procesador Snapdragon 855, el chip más potente de Qualcomm hasta la fecha sin contar con el recientemente anunciado Snapdragon 855+.

Este chip integra cuatro núcleos Cortex-A76 de alto rendimiento — uno que puede alcanzar los 2.84 Ghz y tres núcleos que pueden llegar a 2.4 GHz — y cuatro núcleos eficientes Cortex-A55 que pueden llegar a 1.8 GHz.

El Snapdragon 855 ofrece un rendimiento hasta un 45 por ciento superior en un solo núcleo y hasta un 35 por ciento en multi-núcleo en comparación con su predecesor, el Snapdragon 845. Además, Qualcomm destaca la capacidad de su procesador de mantener un rendimiento sostenido a lo largo del tiempo.

El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 viene con 6 u 8 GB de RAM en función de su configuración de almacenamiento: 128 o 256 GB. En ambos casos se trata de una cantidad de RAM suficiente para mover Android con soltura, siendo la versión de 6 GB la que hemos probado en este análisis.

  Si nos fijamos en los principales benchmarks, en AnTuTu v8 ha dado un resultado de 431.791 puntos, en Geekbench 5 ha obtenido 748/2.492 puntos y en PCMark ha conseguido 10.080 puntos. En los tres casos se trata de puntuaciones muy altas, que no tienen nada que envidiar a los smartphones más potentes.

Dejando a un lado los benchmarks, en el tiempo que he utilizado el Galaxy Tab S6 no he sufrido ningún parón ni problema de rendimiento. Las interfaz se mueve con soltura, las apps se abren rápidamente y el cambio de una tarea a otra es instantáneo.

En los juegos 3D exigentes que he probado — Asphalt 9, Dead Effect 2 y PUBG Mobile — el rendimiento del Galaxy Tab S6 ha sido excelente. También he echado algunas partidas a Fortnite, que llega con una skin exclusiva de Samsung.

Con el software GameBench, he podido medir diversos parámetros de rendimiento en algunos de estos juegos y en los tres casos nos encontramos con tasas de FPS elevadas y estables, con caídas muy puntuales.

  Los dispositivos tienden a calentarse al ser sometidos a una carga elevada de trabajo, especialmente en juegos 3D. Sin embargo, en el caso del Galaxy Tab S6 he medido temperaturas de solo 30ºC en su superficie, por lo que no resulta molesto para nada.

  El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 se comercializa con 128 o 256 GB de almacenamiento interno. So necesitas más capacidad, este almacenamiento es ampliable mediante micro-SD hasta 1TB.

Aunque no he encontrado información oficial sobre el tipo de almacenamiento que incorpora, los resultados de las pruebas de rendimiento que he realizado con AndroBench (1.411 MB/s en lectura secuencial y 524 MB/s en escritura secuencial) hacen pensar que lleva almacenamiento UFS 3.0, el más rápido que podemos encontrar a día de hoy.

Samsung ha optado por desactivar “Adoptable Storage”, una de las funcionalidades más interesantes de Android, así que no es posible formatear la tarjeta micro-SD como parte del almacenamiento interno.

La razón que dio Samsung para inhabilitar esta función en su día es que los usuarios utilizan la tarjeta micro-SD para intercambiar ficheros con el ordenador, especialmente fotos y vídeos, y eso no es posible si la tarjeta se ha formateado como interna ya que está cifrada.

En el aspecto de conectividad, el Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 soporta Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac en las bandas de 2.4 y 5 GHz (pero no WiFi 6), Bluetooth 5.0 y WiFi Direct.

No incorpora radio FM ni tampoco chip NFC, pero posee hardware de localización compatible con BeiDou, Galileo, GLONASS y, por supuesto, GPS.

El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 cuenta con un conector USB Tipo-C que ofrece velocidades teóricas de hasta 10 Gbps (USB 3.1) y soporte OTG, pero no cuenta con soporte MHL.

En las pruebas que he realizado, la velocidad por Wi-Fi ha sido excelente ya que ha alcanzado los 472 Mbps de bajada y 96 Mbps de subida en Wi-Fi con una conexión de fibra óptica 600/100 Mbps.

La variante del Galaxy Tab S6 que he probado cuenta también con conectividad celular LTE/4G, lo que permite conectarse a través de redes móviles sin depender de una red WiFi. En mis pruebas, he conseguido velocidades de bajada de unos 25 Mbps y de velocidades de subida de alrededor de 7 Mbps.

Biometría

Samsung ha incorporado un lector de huella dactilar bajo la pantalla, que permite desbloquear el tablet al apoyar el dedo sobre una zona de la pantalla situada cerca del conector USB-C. Esta zona es bastante pequeña, por lo que debes tener cuidado de colocar bien el dedo encima o el desbloqueo fallará.

Mientras que los últimos smartphones de Samsung utilizan sensores ultrasónicos, el Galaxy Tab S6 emplea un sensor óptico. Los sensores ultrasónicos capturan los relieves 3D de las huellas, pero los sensores ópticos capturan una imagen solo 2D y, por tanto, no son tan seguros.

Lector de huella dactilar bajo la pantalla

  El lector óptico de huella del Galaxy Tab S6 es más lento que un sensor tradicional y que el sensor ultrasónico del Galaxy S10 o Note10. También es más sensible a la suciedad, por lo que no podrás desbloquear el tablet fácilmente si tienes los dedos mojados o sudorosos.

Un aspecto que no me acaba de convencer es que para desbloquear el tablet debes encender primero la pantalla, bien sea pulsando sobre el botón de encendido o haciendo un doble toque sobre la pantalla. Me hubiera gustado que bastase con colocar el dedo sobre la pantalla apagada para desbloquear.

Samsung también ha añadido reconocimiento facial, que funciona bastante bien tanto en vertical como en horizontal, aunque debes tener cuidado de no colocar el tablet demasiado cerca de la cara para que te capte bien y de no tapar la cámara con la mano al sostenerlo en horizontal.

Aunque este sistema no es tan seguro como la huella (captura una imagen 2D de tu cara y, por tanto, es más fácil engañarlo con una fotografía), lo encuentro más cómodo que colocar el dedo sobre la pantalla.

Sorprendentemente, el reconocimiento facial funciona bastante bien en condiciones de poca luz, lo cual es una ventaja importante ya que estos sistemas suelen fallar si el rostro no está bien iluminado.

Batería

El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 llega con una batería de 7.040 mAh, que según Samsung ofrece 15 horas de reproducción de vídeo.

Esta capacidad resulta un tanto escasa si la comparamos con otros tablets como el reciente iPad Air 2019, que con el mismo tamaño de pantalla posee una batería de 8.134 mAh.

En la prueba de batería de PCMark Work 2.0, con la pantalla calibrada a 200 nits, el tablet ha obtenido un resultado bueno (pero no espectacular) de 6 horas y 58 minutos.

En la práctica, la autonomía del Galaxy Tab S6 es buena y, en mi experiencia, aguanta sin problemas una jornada de trabajo completa, aunque me da la sensación de que consume bastante batería en espera.

Si quieres mejorar la autonomía, puedes hacer uso de alguno de los dos modos de ahorro de energía que incorpora Samsung: medio y máximo.

El modo de ahorro medio limita el rendimiento máximo de la CPU al 70%, reduce el brillo máximo a un 90% y, opcionalmente, limita el uso de redes en segundo plano. El modo de ahorro máximo va todavía más allá y cambia el aspecto de la interfaz.

En cualquiera de los dos modos podemos personalizar los siguientes aspectos: reducir el brillo hasta un 90%, limitar la velocidad de la CPU a 70% y desactivar las conexiones WiFi y 4G en segundo plano.

Opciones de ahorro de energía

  Por defecto, está activada una opción llamada Batería ajustable que limita el uso de la batería por parte de apps que no usas con frecuencia. La tablet va aprendiendo con el tiempo cuáles son tus patrones de uso de las aplicaciones.

Samsung también permite seleccionar individualmente aquellas aplicaciones que no queremos que consuman batería en segundo plano, así como la posibilidad de poner en inactivo apps cuando llevan un tiempo sin usarse.

El Galaxy Tab S6 cuenta con carga rápida a 18W, y Samsung ha incorporado un cargador compatible con esta tecnología en la caja. En mis pruebas, el proceso de carga completo ha tardado un total de 2 horas y 25 minutos con el cargador incluido.

Como podemos apreciar en la gráfica, la carga es prácticamente lineal, aunque es algo más rápida hasta el 90 por ciento y se ralentiza ligeramente al final.

  Como novedad, Samsung ofrece la posibilidad de cargar el tablet a través de los conectores laterales utilizando una base de carga POGO que se vende por 59,90 €. No he tenido oportunidad de probar esta base de carga, por lo que no puedo compartir mis impresiones.

Software y funcionalidades

El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 llega con Android 9 Pie y, por encima del sistema operativo, incorpora la capa de personalización Samsung One UI 1.5. Cabe esperar que en algún momento reciba Android 10 pero, por el momento, no hay fecha de llegada.

Samsung lanzó a finales del año pasado One UI con el objetivo de simplificar el uso de los dispositivos, agrupando las opciones para no confundir al usuario y desplazando los controles a la parte inferior de la pantalla donde sea más fácil acceder a ellos.

La capa de personalización Samsung One UI ofrece un aspecto colorido, aunque habrá quienes consideren que los iconos tienen un diseño algo infantil.

El cajón de aplicaciones está activo por defecto, pero Samsung ofrece la opción de desactivarlo si preferimos tener todos los iconos en el escritorio.

Para acceder al cajón, basta con arrastrar ligeramente la pantalla hacia arriba estando en el escritorio. También es posible activar un botón que dé acceso al cajón de aplicaciones.

En los Ajustes podemos configurar que, al arrastrar la pantalla hacia abajo, no se abra el cajón sino el panel de notificaciones, algo que resulta útil ya que la zona de notificaciones y accesos rápidos queda algo lejos del dedo por la longitud de la pantalla.

Por defecto, la cuadrícula de iconos es 5×5, lo que hace que los iconos se vean con un tamaño demasiado grande, por lo que mi consejo es que la cambies a 6×5. De igual forma también podemos cambiar el tamaño de la cuadrícula del cajón de aplicaciones.

A diferencia de otros fabricantes, Samsung no ha implementado una navegación por gestos como tal sino que es posible sustituir los tres botones por tres pequeñas barras que, aunque ocupan menos, actúan de forma similar a los botones, solo que arrastrando hacia arriba

La pantalla principal muestra un gran widget con la hora y la temperatura y la barra de búsqueda de Google. Los iconos muestran el número de notificaciones pendientes por leer en un pequeño círculo, lo cual resulta bastante útil.

Si mantenemos pulsado un icono, podemos acceder a diversas opciones como Elegir elementos, Eliminar de inicio y Desinstalar, así como opciones específicas de esa aplicación. Por ejemplo, en Twitter podemos elegir Buscar, Nuevo tweet, Mensaje nuevo y Escanear código QR; y en la app de Cámara podemos escoger entre Foto o Vídeo.

Interfaz Samsung One UI

  El panel de notificaciones es de color blanco y muestra una primera fila de botones que nos dan acceso rápido a seis ajustes, sin ningún texto. Algunos de estos iconos — como WiFi, Sonido, Bluetooth, etc. — abren diversas opciones al mantenerlos pulsados.

Debajo de esta primera hilera de botones aparecen las notificaciones, aunque es posible posible desplegar muchos más botones y acceder al control de brillo arrastrando de nuevo la primera hilera hacia abajo o utilizando el gesto de arrastrar el panel de notificaciones con dos dedos.

Samsung permite personalizar la cuadrícula de botones — 4×3 y 5×3 — y, si pulsamos en una flecha que hay junto al control de brillo, podemos (des)activar el brillo automático y situar el control de brillo encima del panel de notificaciones.

En la barra de estado podemos elegir si sólo deben mostrarse las 3 notificaciones o todas las notificaciones que quepan. De igual forma, podemos activar que se muestre el porcentaje de batería con un número.

  La sección de Ajustes muestra un listado de grupos de opciones — Conexiones, Sonidos y vibración, Notificaciones, Pantalla, Fondos, Pantalla Bloqueo, Datos biométricos y seguridad, Nube y cuentas, Google, Funciones avanzadas, Salud digital, Mantenimiento del dispositivo, Aplicaciones, Administración general, Accesibilidad, Actualización de software, Manual de usuario y Acerca de la tableta — y al entrar en cada grupo accedemos a los ajustes individuales.

Desde la pantalla de bloqueo propiamente dicha podemos acceder rápidamente a dos aplicaciones configurables a través de unos iconos de acceso directo que se sitúan en las esquinas de la parte inferior de la pantalla. Por defecto, tenemos acceso al teléfono y a la cámara, lo cual es un poco extraño porque no creo que mucha gente haga llamadas desde el tablet.

El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 incorpora la función Multi Window para ejecutar aplicaciones en ventanas, y esta funcionalidad resulta especialmente útil tratándose de un tablet con una pantalla de gran tamaño.

  El teclado del Galaxy Tab S6 resulta algo incómodo de utilizar a pantalla completa debido al gran tamaño de la pantalla, pero es posible activar un modo de teclado dividido en el que cada mitad del teclado está pegada a un borde.

El teclado incorpora la funcionalidad de texto predictivo, que funciona bastante bien, y la posibilidad de escribir arrastrando el dedo sobre las teclas, puntuar automáticamente, poner en mayúsculas automáticamente la primera letra de cada frase, modificar la anchura y altura del teclado, etc.

Si eres de los que no les gusta que otra persona utilice su tablet por si se pone a curiosear, te alegrará saber que Samsung incluye en One UI una funcionalidad llamada Carpeta Segura que permite proteger el acceso a imágenes, notas, correos electrónicos y aplicaciones de forma sencilla.

El acceso a la carpeta segura se puede proteger mediante patrón, PIN, contraseña o huella dactilar. Podemos configurar una huella dactilar diferente para desbloquear la carpeta segura, lo cual puede resultar útil si queremos dar acceso a nuestro tablet mediante huella a un ser cercano, por ejemplo un familiar, pero no queremos que pueda acceder a la carpeta segura.

Otra opción disponible es cambiar el icono de la carpeta segura por algo que sea menos reconocible.

  El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 incorpora control mediante movimientos y gestos:

Smart stay, que detecta si estás mirando la pantalla y la mantiene encendida mientras la miras

Silenciar rápido, que permite silenciar las llamadas entrantes y alarmas cubriendo la pantalla con la mano.

Deslizar palma para capturar, que permite realizar una captura de pantalla deslizando el lateral de la mano de un lado a otro de la pantalla.

Deslizar para llamar/enviar SMS, que permite deslizar un contacto o un número hacia la derecha para realizar una llamada o hacia la izquierda para enviar un mensaje en Teléfono o Contactos

Pulsar dos veces para activar, que enciende la pantalla cuando la pulsas dos veces.

Samsung también ofrece una opción llamada vista emergente inteligente para que las aplicaciones que elijas envíen notificaciones que se pueden pulsar para ampliarlas en una ventana emergente.

  La función No Molestar permite desactivar avisos — llamadas entrantes, notificaciones o alarmas — a determinadas horas, pudiendo establecer algunos contactos como permitidos para que sus llamadas y mensajes sí que lleguen. Lamentablemente no permite escoger diferentes horarios según el día de la semana, algo que parece básico y fácil de implementar.

Samsung ha añadido una funcionalidad llamada Recordatorios de notificaciones para recibir recordatorios periódicos sobre notificaciones de aplicaciones y llamadas perdidas. Podemos escoger la frecuencia de los recordatorios, así como para qué aplicaciones se producirán.

Por supuesto el Galaxy Tab S6 también soporta Smart Lock, una funcionalidad que permite no tener que desbloquear el dispositivo con huella dactilar, cara, PIN o contraseña si un dispositivo Bluetooth en el que confías está cerca (por ejemplo, una pulsera inteligente, un auricular Bluetooth, etc.), si llevas el dispositivo encima o si estás en una ubicación en la que confías.

En el apartado Mantenimiento del Dispositivo podemos gestionar desde un único punto diversos aspectos del rendimiento del tablet: la batería, el almacenamiento, la memoria RAM y la seguridad. Las principales funciones que ofrece son:

Batería: Permite conocer datos sobre el uso de la batería, activar los diferentes modos de ahorro, y conocer aplicaciones con un consumo anormal de batería.

Almacenamiento: Permite conocer el uso del almacenamiento, eliminar datos innecesarios, y eliminar datos de usuario no utilizados.

Memoria: Permite conocer el uso de la memoria y detener aplicaciones con alto consumo.

Seguridad: Permite realizar análisis del dispositivo en busca de amenazas utilizando un anti-malware de McAfee.

Samsung ha añadido la funcionalidad de Salud digital de Google que nos muestra estadísticas sobre el uso del tablet — número de notificaciones recibidas, número de desbloqueo, tiempo dedicado a cada app, etc. — y permite establecer controles.

  Samsung ha incorporado Game Launcher, que organiza todos los juegos en un solo lugar de forma automática, y permite silenciar el juego (pero no el dispositivo) y seleccionar tres modos de rendimiento: alto rendimiento, ahorro de energía y equilibrado. Game Launcher incluye Discord, una app que permite hablar y chatear con amigos mientras juegas, así como ver a qué están jugando.

Durante el propio juego, las Game Tools ofrecen funcionalidades interesantes como: minimizar notificaciones y llamadas, no mostrar notificaciones, bloquear Bixby / brillo automático, bloquear botones de navegación o bloquear el táctil de la pantalla. También es posible capturar una pantalla o incluso grabar un vídeo. La fuente del sonido puede ser el micrófono del tablet o el audio del juego.

Game Tools añade funcionalidades útiles a la hora de disfrutar de juegos

  Samsung ha incorporado Samsung Pass, que permite recordar los usuarios y contraseñas en aplicaciones, y proteger su acceso mediante autenticación biométrica. También es posible guardar datos personales para rellenar formularios automáticamente.

El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 cuenta con la funcionalidad DeX que convierte la pantalla del tablet en un escritorio para manejarlo como si fuera un ordenador si conectamos un teclado y ratón (la funda BookCover con teclado y trackpad). Opcionalmente, podemos conectar también un monitor o televisor a través de de un adaptador de USB-C a HDMI.

Algunas apps no son todavía compatibles con DeX y se abren en el escritorio como si fueran una aplicación móvil. Esto ocurre, por ejemplo, con la app de Netflix, que muestra la interfaz de smartphone.

He encontrado algunas inconsistencias en la interfaz, como el hecho de que haya dos botones para realizar capturas de pantalla en la barra inferior: uno de Android y otro de Dex. También es un poco frustrante que la ventanas abiertas no se mantengan si salimos y entramos en el modo DeX. Cambiar de tamaño las ventanas usando el trackpad tampoco es tarea fácil.

  Samsung ha incluido su asistente virtual Bixby Voice para que puedas dar órdenes al tablet mediante la voz. Puedes pedirle, por ejemplo, que comience a reproducir música o abrir una aplicación.

Por último, si tienes un smartphone Samsung, puedes contestar llamadas y responder mensajes desde el Galaxy Tab S6, aunque la integración no es tan fuerte como entre dispositivos iOS. Por ejemplo, no es posible activar de forma remota un punto de acceso WiFi en el smartphone para tener acceso a Internet.

Puntero S Pen

El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 viene con un puntero S Pen en la caja que permite escribir y dibujar sobre la pantalla, así como interactuar con el tablet a distancia mediante gestos gracias a la conectividad Bluetooth.

El S Pen del Galaxy Tab S6 es más grueso y largo que el del Samsung Galaxy Note10 y, por tanto, se parece más a un lápiz tradicional. Al igual que el S Pen del Galaxy Note10, posee un botón pulsable en el cuerpo, más cerca de la punta.

El S Pen posee conectividad Bluetooth y ofrece una sensibilidad de 4.096 niveles de presión, lo que permite realizar trazos más o menos gruesos en función de la presión que ejerzamos.

Su pequeña batería de 0,35 mAh se recarga cuando colocas el S Pen en la hendidura de la parte posterior del tablet, y ofrece una autonomía de hasta 10 horas con solo 10 minutos de carga.

Si mantenemos pulsado el botón del S Pen, podemos abrir la app de Cámara o, si preferimos, podemos elegir entre que se abra otra app que tengamos instalada o que se active alguna de las funciones del S Pen.

El puntero S Pen no solamente tiene utilidad en la interfaz sino que también podemos utilizarlo en ciertas apps para distintas funciones pulsando el botón del S Pen una o dos veces seguidas:

Cámara: Una pulsación permite capturar una fotografía y una pulsación doble permite conmutar entre la cámara frontal y trasera. Esto es útil si, por ejemplo, al tomar un selfie colocamos el tablet apoyado en algún sitio o tenemos el brazo tan extendido que no llegamos al botón de disparo.

Galería: Una pulsación pasa a la siguiente imagen y una pulsación doble vuelve a la anterior Esto es útil si, por ejemplo, conectamos el tablet a un televisor o monitor y queremos ir viendo fotografías sin tener el tablet a mano.

YouTube: Una pulsación reproduce o pausa el vídeo y una pulsación doble lo salta. Esto es útil si, por ejemplo, apoyamos el tablet sobre algún sitio mientras vemos un vídeo.

Powerpoint: Al utilizar Powerpoint con Samsung DeX, una pulsación pasa a la siguiente transparencia y una pulsación doble vuelve a la anterior.

Grabadora de voz: Una pulsación inicia o pausa la grabación.

Música: Una pulsación inicia o pausa la reproducción, y una pulsación doble salta a la siguiente pista

Chrome: Una pulsación vuelve a la página anterior y un pulsación doble va a la siguiente página.

  Una de las novedades que introdujo el Galaxy Note10 y que está presente en el Galaxy Tab S6 es el uso del S Pen a distancia, que permite controlar remotamente aplicaciones (hasta 10 metros de distancia) mediante clics y gestos en el aire del puntero, como si fuera una varita mágica.

El S Pen reconoce tres tipos de gestos en el aire:

Movimiento a izquierda o derecha para, por ejemplo, pasar a la foto siguiente o volver a la anterior en la Galería o cambiar de modo en la app Cámara.

Movimiento hacia arriba o abajo para, por ejemplo, subir o bajar el volumen o cambiar entre cámaras en la app Cámara.

Movimiento circular en sentido horario o antihorario para, por ejemplo, cambiar el zoom de la cámara en la app Cámara.

La funcionalidad de S Pen remoto es compatible con muchas aplicaciones de Samsung — Cámara, Galería, Internet, Grabadora de voz, Samsung Notes, AR Emoji, Dibujos AR y Reloj — así como en cualquier otra aplicación de cámara o de reproducción multimedia (por ejemplo, Netflix). Los desarrolladores pueden añadir soporte del S Pen a sus propias apps a través del SDK de Samsung.

En la práctica, el manejo del tablet mediante gestos en el aire del S Pen no deja de ser una curiosidad ya que, en mi día a día, no siento la necesidad de manejar el tablet a distancia.

Por supuesto, el puntero no solamente sirve para escribir o dibujar, sino que también puedes manejar la interfaz del tablet con él como si lo hicieras con el dedo.

Al pulsar el botón del S Pen cuando está cerca de la pantalla, se muestran aquellas aplicaciones o funciones del S Pen que hayamos escogido. Entre las opciones tenemos las siguientes:

Crear nota abre la aplicación Samsung Notas, que nos permite tomar una nota de texto manuscrita, pegar imágenes, añadir grabaciones de voz, etc. Samsung ha añadido la posibilidad de convertir letra manuscrita a texto con un grado de precisión muy elevado y exportar el resultado a Microsoft Word.

Smart Select permite recortar una porción de la pantalla y guardarla como una imagen o, incluso, convertirla a texto. También es posible generar un imagen animada GIF capturando una zona de la pantalla en movimiento.

Escritura pantalla hace una captura de la pantalla y nos permite escribir o dibujar encima. Esta función integra la opción de Scroll Capture, que hace scroll automáticamente para capturar una página web completa, de principio a fin.

Mensaje Animado permite realizar dibujos con el S Pen sobre una fotografía, una imagen captada con la cámara o un fondo de color y crear vídeos como este.

Traducir permite, como su nombre indica, traducir una palabra con Google Translate colocando el S Pen encima e incluso escuchar su pronunciación.

Ampliar coloca una lupa virtual sobre la pantalla para ampliar lo que vemos.

Vista Rápida realiza una captura de pantalla y la minimiza en una esquina de la pantalla. Al pulsar encima con el S Pen, la miniatura se hace grande.

PEN UP nos permite realizar dibujos sobre la pantalla utilizando el S Pen de forma cómoda.

Dibujos AR permite dibujar en 3D con el S Pen sobre la imagen en vivo captada por la cámara. Los elementos que dibujamos se quedan flotando en el aire en 3D y cambian de perspectiva y tamaño conforme movemos la cámara.

Colorear permite colorear cuadernos de dibujos con el S Pen.

Escribir en el calendario permite dibujar con el S Pen en el calendario integrado en el tablet.

Conversión de texto manuscrito a texto

  Una de las funciones más útiles del Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 es la posibilidad de tomar notas sobre la pantalla estando esta apagada.

Basta con acercar el S Pen a la pantalla y pulsar el botón para estar en disposición de escribir sobre ella y, una vez que terminamos, podemos guardar la nota. Esta función es útil para, por ejemplo, tomar una nota rápida sobre la marcha.

Funda BookCover con teclado y trackpad

Samsung comercializa una funda llamada BookCover Keyboard por 179,90€ que no solamente protege el tablet de golpes y arañazos sino que añade un teclado completo con touchpad. 

A diferencia de otros teclados que se conectan por Bluetooth, este se conecta a través de unos pines, por lo que el enlace es instantáneo y no requiere tener batería.

Disponer de un teclado completo resulta muy útil para escribir textos largos siempre que puedas apoyarlo sobre una superficie firme — no es estable si pretendemos utilizarlo apoyado sobre las piernas como si fuera un portátil.

Un aspecto que me gusta es que tiene una tecla Fn que permite acceder a teclas de función (F1…F12), Esc, Supr y otras. También encuentro muy útil la presencia de un trackpad que, aunque es un poco pequeño, permite utilizar el tablet en modo DeX con ratón sin tener que alargar la mano para tocar la pantalla.

  Como aspecto a mejorar, las teclas no están retroiluminadas, lo que dificulta el uso en la oscuridad (a decir verdad, los teclados de tablets no suelen incluir teclas iluminadas). También encuentro como inconveniente que, mientras está pulsada la tecla Shift para escribir en mayúsculas, no funciona la barra espaciadora.

Además del teclado, existe otra pieza que se acopla magnéticamente a la parte de atrás para protegerla. Esta sujeción es tan fuerte que cuesta cierto esfuerzo retirar la cubierta trasera. Por suerte, queda una solapa sin imán que puede ser levantada fácilmente para acceder al espacio donde se guarda el S Pen.

Un aspecto interesante de la BookCover es que es posible colocar la base de apoyo en cualquier ángulo para un uso más cómodo.

El hecho de que sean dos piezas separadas resulta útil para aquellos casos en los que, por ejemplo, queremos ver un vídeo en el tablet pero no queremos tener el teclado delante.

Aplicaciones incluidas

Samsung incorpora algunas aplicaciones propias pre-instaladas pero ofrece muchas más a través de la tienda Galaxy Apps. Las únicas apps de Samsung que llegan pre-instaladas son:

Samsung Members es una app para ofrecer ayuda a los usuarios, y también proporciona algunas ventajas.

Samsung Flow es una app que permite enlazar la tablet con un smartphone o un PC para compartir contenido entre dispositivos, sincronizar notificaciones, etc.

Samsung Notes es una app que permite tomar notas de forma sencilla y sincronizarlas con otros dispositivos a través de nuestra cuenta de Samsung.

Si echas de menos algunas de las aplicaciones que antes venían instaladas de fábrica en los dispositivos de la marca — como Samsung Music, Samsung Internet, Kids Mode, S Translator, Slide Sync, y Video — puedes descargarlas desde la tienda Galaxy Apps.

Multimedia

El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 llega con cuatro altavoces estéreo que han sido diseñados conjuntamente con AKG y Harman, por lo que el sonido es bastante mejor de lo que solemos encontrar en un tablet. Además, cuenta con Dolby Atmos para ofrecer sonido envolvente 3D.

Los altavoces detectan la orientación del tablet — horizontal o vertical — y ajustan la reproducción del sonido para mantener la separación de canales. La calidad del altavoz es bastante buena, y el sonido que emite puede ser muy potente.

Un aspecto que merece la pena destacar es la ausencia de conector de auriculares, algo que no será del agrado de muchos usuarios. Teniendo en cuenta que el espacio ocupado por el conector de auriculares es mínimo en un tablet, me hubiera gustado que estuviera presente.

Samsung ha optado por no incorporar su propio reproductor de música sino que ha recurrido a Play Música, el reproductor de Google.

Play Música permite organizar nuestras canciones por géneros, artistas, álbumes y títulos, y ofrece un servicio de suscripción de música en streaming similar a Spotify.

También podemos descargar la app Música de Samsung desde la tienda Galaxy Apps, que cuenta con un diseño muy atractivo y está bien integrado con el resto de servicios y aplicaciones de Samsung.

Samsung ha incorporado algunas funciones interesantes de sonido Adapt Sound para calibrar el sonido emitido a través de los auriculares a la respuesta frecuencial de nuestro oído. Samsung incorpora una función llamada Optimizador UHQ que mejora la resolución del sonido de la música y vídeos, así como un ecualizador de sonido.

  Samsung ha incluido una aplicación propia llamada Galería para visualizar y reproducir las fotos y vídeos almacenados en el tablet. La aplicación también permite editar las imágenes mediante diversas funcionalidades integradas.

La reproducción de vídeo con esta app es excelente y el tablet es capaz de reproducir sin problemas ficheros de vídeo compatibles con suavidad gracias a su potente procesador. Además, el elevado contraste de la pantalla y los negros puros hacen que sea una delicia ver películas.

Para comprobar la compatibilidad con diversos formatos de audio y vídeo, hemos reproducido cuatro ficheros con resolución Full HD y con resolución 4K, codificados con el formato H.264 y con el más moderno HEVC. Los cuatro se reproducen perfectamente con total suavidad.

Por supuesto, los vídeos de servicios de streaming como Netflix, HBO y Amazon Prime Video se reproducen sin ningún problema. El dispositivo cuenta con la certificación Widevine L1, por lo que podemos reproducir vídeos HD de servicios protegidos por DRM como Netflix sin problemas incluso en calidad HDR.

Cámaras de fotos

Aunque un tablet no suele ser el dispositivo elegido por los usuarios a la hora de capturar fotografías o vídeos, Samsung ha incorporado dos cámaras traseras:

Cámara gran angular (26 mm.) de 13 MP con apertura f/2.0

Cámara ultra gran angular (12 mm.) de 5 MP con apertura f/2.2

No solamente es la primera vez que Samsung introduce dos cámaras traseras en un tablet sino que posiblemente es de los pocos fabricantes que se han tomado la molestia en incorporar una doble cámara.

Curiosamente, esta cámara doble no viene acompañada por un flash, que puede resultar útil a la hora de escanear documentos — una tarea bastante más común que hacer fotografías de paisajes.

  Con la cámara principal gran angular, la calidad de las fotografías es buena en condiciones de luz abundante. Las imágenes ofrecen un alto nivel de detalle y una correcta reproducción de los colores.

Sin embargo, la ausencia de estabilización óptica y una lente con una apertura no demasiado amplia hacen que la imagen presente mucho ruido en condiciones de poca luz.

  La cámara ultra gran angular permite tomar fotografías con muchos más elementos de los que normalmente caben en una fotografía, como podemos apreciar en estos ejemplos, por lo que es ideal para fotografiar edificios o monumentos.

Esta cámara no posee estabilización óptica y su apertura es algo limitada, por lo que no está indicada para tomar fotografías en situaciones de poca luz.

  El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 es capaz de capturar fotografías en modo Retrato (o Enfoque Dinámico, como le llama Samsung) difuminando el fondo, como la que podemos ver a continuación. El resultado es bastante bueno con luz abundante.

  Samsung ha incorporado Bixby Vision al Galaxy Tab S6, que permite identificar objetos captados por la cámara para comprar uno igual online, obtener información general, etc.

A la hora de grabar vídeo, es capaz de grabar a resolución Ultra HD (3840 x 1260 píxeles a 30 fps). Los vídeos presentan una buena calidad de imagen, como se puede apreciar en este ejemplo.

  La cámara frontal posee un sensor de 8MP con apertura f/2.0, y una lente con enfoque fijo. Estas características son suficientes para realizar videollamadas o tomar selfies en condiciones de buena luz, pero no cabe esperar una gran calidad en otras condiciones.

El vídeo capturado con la cámara frontal tiene una resolución máxima de Full HD (1920 x 1080 píxeles a 30 fps).

Precio y competidores

El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 posee un precio de venta recomendado de 719€ (WiFi) / 799€ (WiFi + 4G) con 128 GB y 799€ (WiFi) / 879€ (WiFi + 4G) con 256 GB de almacenamiento, aunque podemos encontrarlo a precios más económicos en tiendas online como Amazon.

Dentro de las opciones de tablets de Samsung, tenemos el Galaxy Tab S5e y el Galaxy Tab S4 como las alternativas más interesantes a un menor precio.

El Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e cuenta con pantalla Super AMOLED de 10.5″, procesador Snapdragon 670, 4GB de RAM, 64GB de almacenamiento, cámara trasera de 13MP, cámara frontal de 8MP y batería de 7.040 mAh. Tiene un precio recomendado de 439 € (64GB) / 509 € (128GB) para la versión WiFi y 499 € (64GB) / 569 € (128GB) para la versión WiFi+4G.

Por un precio ligeramente más alto puedes hacerte con el Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 con precios recomendados de 499€ (WiFi) o 559€ (WiFi+4G). Aunque es más antiguo, posee especificaciones más potentes que el Galaxy Tab S5e: pantalla Super AMOLED de 10.5″, procesador Snapdragon 835, 4GB de RAM, 64GB de almacenamiento, cámara trasera de 13MP, cámara frontal de 8MP, batería de 7.300 mAh y soporte para S Pen.

Si andas detrás de un tablet de gama alta y no te importa salirte del ecosistema Android, el iPad Pro de 11″ (a partir de 879€) es una gran alternativa. Cuenta con pantalla IPS LCD de 11″ a 120 Hz, reconocimiento facial Face ID, procesador A12X Bionic, 64/256/512/1TB de almacenamiento, cámara trasera de 12MP f/1.8, cámara frontal de 7MP f/2.2 y batería de 7812 mAh. También es compatible con el Apple Pencil de 2ª generación y la funda con teclado Smart Keyboard Folio.

Por supuesto, estas no son las únicas alternativas en el mercado sino que también tenemos otros tablets de fabricantes como Huawei o Lenovo.

Conclusiones

Mientras que la mayoría de los fabricantes centrados en Android han ido perdiendo interés en el mercado de los tablets, Samsung lanza nuevos tablets cada pocos meses con características y precios adaptados a diferentes bolsillos.

La serie Galaxy Tab S es la de prestaciones más elevadas y el reciente Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 es el modelo más potente y avanzado del catálogo de la compañía.

Comenzando por su diseño, el Galaxy Tab S6 cuenta con un cuerpo de aluminio muy delgado de tan solo 5.7 mm, y un peso de solo solo 420 gramos, por lo que resulta muy cómodo de transportar y sostener en la mano. La pantalla está rodeada por marcos muy estrechos, por lo que se consigue un gran aprovechamiento del frontal.

El excelente panel Super AMOLED del Galaxy Tab S6 ofrece amplio gamut de color, elevado contraste y un buen nivel de brillo máximo. De hecho, es el primer tablet compatible con HDR10+, el estándar de HDR dinámico promovido por Samsung, aunque no soporta Dolby Vision, que está más extendido.

El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 ofrece dos modos de color: natural e intenso. En el modo de color Natural, la fidelidad de color es excelente aunque la mayoría de los usuarios optarán por el modo Intenso, con colores más saturados aunque menos fieles a la realidad.

  El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 llega con el procesador de gama alta Snapdragon 855, el mismo que incorporan casi todos los smartphones Android de gama alta de 2019, y viene acompañado por 6 u 8 GB de RAM en función de la variante de almacenamiento que escojamos, 128 o 256 GB.

Una de las sorpresas más agradables es que el almacenamiento es eUFS 3.0, el más rápido que podemos encontrar a día de hoy y que solo está presente en unos pocos smartphones. Esto se traduce en tiempos más rápidos de carga de apps pesadas como juegos.

El almacenamiento es ampliable mediante micro-SD hasta 1 TB  de capacidad pero Samsung no ha habilitado la función Adoptable Storage, por lo que no podemos formatearlo como una extensión del almacenamiento interno.

Los resultados de los benchmarks muestran que el Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 es un tablet muy potente, a la altura de los smartphones más avanzados del momento y por encima de otros tablet Android. La interfaz One UI, las aplicaciones y los juegos 3D avanzados se abren y se mueven con gran fluidez.

El Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 cuenta con una batería de 7.040 mAh, una capacidad que está algo por debajo de otros tablets con el mismo tamaño de pantalla — es el precio a pagar por ser un dispositivo tan fino. La autonomía es buena y no tendrás problema para aguantar una jornada de trabajo con un uso normal.

En el aspecto de conectividad, el Galaxy Tab S6 soporta Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac en las bandas de 2.4 y 5 GHz (pero no WiFi 6), Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi Direct y, opcionalmente, conectividad celular LTE/4G.

En cuanto a las velocidades de conexión, he obtenido buenos valores tanto en las pruebas de velocidad WiFi como 4G.

Por primera vez en un tablet, Samsung ha integrado un lector de huella óptico bajo la propia pantalla.

El desbloqueo mediante huella funciona con bien, aunque el área de reconocimiento es un poco pequeña y a veces no se acierta a la primera.

Este lector no es tan rápido y seguro como los lectores de huella ultrasónicos que emplean el Galaxy S10 y el Galaxy Note10 pero, al tratarse de un tablet, posiblemente no lo desbloquees tantas veces a lo largo del día. Un aspecto mejorable es que el desbloqueo no funciona si la pantalla está apagada, por lo que es necesario encenderla antes de colocar el dedo.

Samsung también ofrece desbloqueo mediante reconocimiento facial 2D. Aunque no es tan seguro como la huella, funciona de manera fiable y, para mí, resulta más cómodo que la huella, por lo que es el sistema que he utilizado en el día a día.

Samsung ha incluido un puntero S Pen que no solamente permite dibujar y escribir sobre la pantalla (el reconocimiento de escritura ha mejorado notablemente), sino que también permite manejar aplicaciones a distancia mediante gestos en el aire, aunque considero esto último es más una curiosidad que algo realmente útil. El S Pen tiene un lugar en la parte de atrás del tablet donde se acopla magnéticamente y se carga de forma inalámbrica.

  Otro aspecto reseñable del Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 es la calidad de sonido, ya que cuenta con cuatro altavoces desarrollados con AKG y soporte Dolby Atmos. Sin embargo, echo de menos la presencia de un conector de auriculares de 3.5mm.

Samsung ha lanzado el Galaxy Tab S6 con Android 9 Pie y, por encima, la nueva capa de personalización Samsung One UI que busca simplificar el uso del dispositivo y hacer más accesibles los botones y controles más utilizados.

El Samung Galaxy Tab S6 cuenta con una gran cantidad de funcionalidades software por encima de Android como el control por gestos, los modos de ahorro de energía, la carpeta segura,  Game Tools/Game Launcher o Samsung Pass.

Una de de las funcionalidades más interesantes para un tablet es Samsung DeX, que permite activar un modo “escritorio” para utilizar apps en ventanas mediante un teclado y ratón. El ratio 16:10 de la pantalla, sin embargo, no ayuda mucho a la hora de trabajar con ventanas, y DeX tiene algunos fallos por pulir. Si preferimos, podemos conectar el tablet a una pantalla externa mediante un un cable USB-C a HDMI.

Samsung comercializa una funda BookCover con teclado y trackpad que se acopla al tablet y transfiere energía/datos a través de unos conectores Pogo pins de forma sencilla, por lo que no requiere conectividad Bluetooth ni batería.

Este accesorio aporta mucha comodidad a la hora de escribir documentos largos o manejar DeX con el trackpad sin tener que tocar la pantalla para nada.

Samsung ha incorporado dos cámaras traseras: una cámara gran angular de 13MP con apertura f/2.0 y una cámara ultra gran angular de 5MP con apertura f/2.2.

Ambas cámaras ofrecen una buena calidad en condiciones de abundante iluminación e incluso soportan modo Retrato. Sin embargo, por la noche la calidad de imagen sufre mucho ya que carecen de estabilización óptica y la apertura de la lente no es muy amplia.

Lo mismo ocurre con la cámara frontal, que ofrece una calidad suficiente para videollamadas pero a la que no se le puede pedir mucho más.

En conclusión, el Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 un tablet muy recomendable para aquellos que buscan un dispositivo potente que no solamente ofrezca una excelente experiencia multimedia sino que también sirva para trabajar y crear contenidos.

Ahora bien, no es un tablet para todos los bolsillos. El precio de venta recomendado del Galaxy Tab S6 es 719€ (WiFi) / 799€ (WiFi + 4G) con 128 GB y 799€ (WiFi) / 879€ (WiFi + 4G) con 256 GB, aunque es posible encontrarlo a un precio inferior en sitios online como Amazon España.

Una empresa tecnológica que compite por un contrato del Pentágono tiene vínculos con una organización ligada a un oligarca ruso

La Nube de Infraestructura de Defensa de Empresas Conjuntas (JEDI) es un proyecto del Pentágono enfocado en el resguardo de información confidencial de la defensa de E.U. que, en última instancia, podría almacenar incluso códigos nucleares. Acorde a expertos en forense digital del Instituto Internacional de Seguridad Cibernética, este proyecto ya ha comenzado a generar serias preocupaciones de seguridad, a pesar de que aún se encuentra en fase de licitación.

Viktor Vekselberg, cercano al gobierno ruso, ha sido vinculado con C5, un grupo de empresas que ha colaborado muy de cerca con Amazon Web Services (AWS), líderes en la carrera por la adjudicación del contrato del Pentágono.

Tanto C5 como AWS han declarado que el grupo C5 no está involucrado en ninguna forma en la licitación del proyecto JEDI. Por su parte, el Pentágono se ha negado a realizar declaraciones al respecto, en cumplimiento con la confidencialidad del proceso de licitación.

Amazon Web Services y C5 Capital

AWS se ha convertido en el más importante proveedor de servicios de cómputo en la nube del mundo, controlando un tercio de todo el mercado de esta clase de servicios. Por otra parte, C5 es un grupo relativamente nuevo, pero que en pocos años se ha hecho de un capital cercano a los 120 millones de dólares para inversión en seguridad informática. Aunque han colaborado en diversos proyectos en la nube, ambas empresas niegan tener vínculos cercanos.

C5 Accelerate, una de las empresas que integran C5, afirma en su sitio web que está “desarrollando un clúster de aceleradores de nube en Europa, Medio Oriente, África y los Estados Unidos, en colaboración con AWS”. Sin embargo, C5 sostiene que nunca ha participado en una licitación junto con AWS, afirmando además que ha trabajado con empresas como IBM y Microsoft, sin distinción alguna.

No obstante, acorde a expertos en forense digital, Teresa Carlson y Andre Pienaar, representantes de AWS y C5, han recorrido múltiples países promoviendo la relación entre ambas empresas.

Andre Pienaar y sus nexos con Rusia

Pienaar, el hombre detrás de C5, es un ciudadano sudafricano que guarda estrechas relaciones con muchas de las personas más importantes en diferentes ramas industriales. En la nómina de C5 Capital, una de sus empresas más importantes, se encuentran algunos de los nombres más influyentes dentro de las élites militares y de seguridad, ya sea en oriente o en occidente.

Pienaar también ha sido vinculado con Viktor Vekselberg, empresario ruso que se encuentra en la lista de sancionados por el gobierno de E.U. por sus nexos con el gobierno del presidente ruso Vladimir Putin.

Vínculos entre C5 y Rusia

Acorde a expertos en forense digital y ciberseguridad, ha sido descubierta una importante inyección de capital ruso en la intrincada estructura de las compañías que integran C5.

C5 Razor Bidco, subsidiaria de C5, aportó una inversión de cerca de 17 millones de dólares en 2015, justo cuando el empresario Vladmir Kuznetsov se convirtió en director y principal accionista de la compañía. AWS destaca que nunca ha trabajado con C5 Razor Bidco, pero esta empresa es parte del grupo C5 y es propiedad de Andre Pienaar. Además, sea informado ampliamente que Vladimir Kuznetsov es uno de los hombres de confianza del oligarca ruso Viktor Vekselberg. Kutznetsov ha negado en repetidas ocasiones ser “mano derecha” de Vekselberg.

Las partes involucradas han negado los presuntos vínculos, mencionando que lamentan los malos entendidos. Según Bloomberg, Google está trabajando en tecnología relacionada con las cadenas de bloques para apoyar su negocio de nube y evitar la competencia de las nuevas empresas, citando a personas familiarizadas con el tema.

Las empresas utilizan el blockchain y otros libros de contabilidad digitales para registrar de forma segura las transacciones y procesar otros datos a través de Internet. Google podría utilizar ese servicio, por ejemplo, para asegurar a los clientes que su información está protegida cuando se almacena en la gigantesca red de servidores informáticos que alimentan sus servicios en nube.

La unidad Alphabet está desarrollando su propio libro de contabilidad digital distribuido que terceros pueden usar para publicar y verificar transacciones, dijo una de las personas. Aunque el calendario de lanzamiento de cualquier producto no está claro, la compañía planea ofrecerlo para diferenciar su servicio en la nube de sus rivales. También proporcionará una versión en marca blanca que otras empresas pueden ejecutar en sus propios servidores.

El gigante de Internet también ha estado adquiriendo e invirtiendo en startups con experiencia en contabilidad digital. Muchos de los acuerdos no han sido anunciados, dijo la persona. ¿Lucha de gigantes? Será una broma…

Gonzalo Toca, de Cambio16, me llamó por teléfono para hablar sobre la dinámica competitiva en España entre Amazon y El Corte Inglés, pero cuando ayer vi el reportaje que publicó y en el que me cita brevemente, “Lucha de gigantes: El Corte Inglés derrota a Amazon“, me horroricé: es, seguramente, el peor y más absurdo titular que he visto en mucho tiempo. De hecho, leyendo el artículo entiendo que me cite tan poco, porque lógicamente, no pude darle ningún argumento que llevase a la conclusión que indica el título, sino más bien todo lo contrario.

Plantear la competencia entre El Corte Inglés y Amazon como una “lucha entre gigantes” es, sencillamente, absurdo. Pongamos, por favor, las cosas en su sitio: mientras Amazon es la cuarta compañía cotizada más grande del mundo, con una valoración de más de 571,000 millones de dólares, El Corte Inglés es una empresa no cotizada que podría valer, en el más optimista de los escenarios, unos 16,000 millones de euros, casi treinta veces menos. Pretender equiparar a ambas compañías calificando un supuesto enfrentamiento como “lucha de gigantes” obvia una clara evidencia: que si una cosa es no una, ni dos, sino treinta veces mayor que otra, solo una de ellas puede ser calificada como “gigante”, no las dos. Tan solo en la reciente adquisición de Whole Foods, una cadena de 473 supermercados estratégicamente situados, Amazon se ha gastado casi tanto, 13,400 millones de dólares, como lo que algunos afirman que vale El Corte Inglés, que sumando sus centros con los Hipercor y los Supercor llegaría a reunir un total de 228 locales. En número de empleados, hablamos de magnitudes igualmente incomparables: frente a las alrededor de 92,000 personas que trabajan en El Corte Inglés, la plantilla de Amazon tiene el tamaño de un país pequeño, más de medio millón de empleados.

Pretender comparar así ambas compañías es algo que solo puede calificarse de miopía espectacular: Amazon no solo es un gigante del comercio a nivel mundial, única variable en la que podría coincidir en un ámbito similar al que El Corte Inglés compite a escala local (con actividad únicamente en dos países, España y Portugal), sino que además, lo es en industrias tan diversas como la producción y distribución de contenidos, el software, el hardware, las plataformas logísticas o el cloud computing, por citar únicamente algunos de sus negocios más destacados. Mientras Amazon es, desde hace algún tiempo, la compañía que inspira más miedo a los directivos de prácticamente todas las empresas del mundo, El Corte Inglés únicamente suena conocida a aquellos que han pasado alguna vez por España. ¿Os impresiona el hecho de que El Corte Inglés sea el primer anunciante de nuestro país, con un volumen de 78.5 millones de euros? Pues el presupuesto de marketing de Amazon se calcula en torno a los 7,000 millones de dólares. Vamos a dejarnos de comparaciones sin sentido, por favor.

Ni hay una “lucha de gigantes”, ni el Corte Inglés “derrota” a Amazon en nada, y plantearlo así no tiene ningún sentido. Que El Corte Inglés facture en dos países, España y Portugal, cinco veces más que Amazon no quiere decir absolutamente nada, del mismo modo que no tiene ningún sentido comparar el volumen total del comercio de un país con únicamente el comercio electrónico en el mismo. El Corte Inglés es una gran empresa comercial española a la que espero y deseo que le vaya bien muchos años, pero Amazon es un gigante imparable a nivel mundial en una amplia variedad de ámbitos. El Corte Inglés lleva actuando en el mismo ámbito desde 1940 y, como mucho, precisamente espoleada por Amazon, empieza a moverse tímidamente en el mundo online. Amazon ha crecido tanto y en tantos negocios desde su fundación en 1994, que su revalorización burs��til desde que salió a bolsa alcanza un porcentaje hasta difícil de leer: 67,597% (y sí, la coma es un separador de millares, no una coma decimal). Si queremos evaluar el tema de una manera definitiva y evidente, diríamos que mientras El Corte Inglés tiene que mirar a Amazon para inspirarse en muchas cosas, Amazon no necesita mirar en absoluto a El Corte Inglés – ni a prácticamente nadie – para nada.

¿Tiene El Corte Inglés algo que hacer frente a Amazon? De nuevo, resulta absurdo plantearlo así. Seguramente, el volumen de lo que adquiriremos en Amazon a lo largo de los próximos años crezca de manera sostenida, mientras que el que adquiriremos en El Corte Inglés siga una dinámica relativamente constante, cuando no descendente. Desde hace años, la mayor parte de las cadenas generalistas de grandes almacenes en Estados Unidos evolucionan a la baja: las tendencias de los países no pueden trasladarse sin más a otros y, por tanto, eso no quiere decir necesariamente que sea lo mismo que vaya a pasarle a El Corte Inglés, pero tampoco que ni en sus mejores sueños pueda aspirar a acercarse al crecimiento y dinamismo que muestra una compañía como Amazon. Sin embargo, hay mucho espacio en la economía de los países para competidores locales en el mundo de la distribución, y el hecho de que a Amazon le vaya cada vez mejor no quiere decir que vaya a acabar con El Corte Inglés, ni que tampoco lo pretenda. Hablamos, simplemente, de compañías que no son comparables, eso es todo. De dimensiones y de ligas completamente diferentes. Ah, y de un muy mal titular.
