4-24-24: Day 68
Day 68 consisted of 4 tutorials, as well as a mini challenge:
1. BucketList: Introduction
2. Adding conformance to Comparable for custom types
3. Writing data to the documents directory
4. Switching view states with enums
Mini Challenge: Back in project 8 we looked at how to create a generic extension on Bundle that lets us find, load, and decode any Codable data from our app bundle. Can you write something similar for the documents directory, perhaps making it an extension on FileManager?
I couldn’t figure this one out and had to look over a solution, but I understand it now!

And while the cultural-preservationist in me wants to find a way to make it good again so that subculture sticks around I'm not sure what would as even if she could be deradicalized (which my autistic brain says could perhaps happen through collective effort/help of fans who don't want to feel like their life was wasted to balance the scales) people would still hate her for the past and if a trans woman could buy the rights from her (whatever Warner Bros. doesn't already own I don't know how that shit works with adaptations) through a fan crowdfunding campaign people would hate the trans woman for giving her money
And even finding a different fandom with a sorting system like that that we could make a subculture around instead makes me afraid any potential candidates would be as problematic (e.g. Homestuck's got a whole separate mess going on I don't want to get into, people are criticizing Rick Riordan for everything from supposed Native stereotypes to inaccurate ADHD representation to "why didn't you set the Egyptian mythology series in Egypt with Egyptian characters", MtG's lore treats its queer representation weirdly etc. etc. and that's only stuff that's problematic-or-potentially-so now and not what could be down the line)
TL;DR I want things to be like they were but I don't know what could make them that way short of either A. JK being deradicalized, publicly renouncing her bigoted beliefs, taking back the money she donated and if not coming out as trans at least releasing a special new edition of the Harry Potter books where the most trans-codable-in-a-positive-way characters are actually trans or B. a completely-unproblematic fantasy book series still in progress with its own personality-type character sorting system we can form a new subculture around and help the author's beliefs keep with the times
What makes JKR's shitshow even harder to process is that she didn't just ruin a book series. Harry Potter was an entire subculture. Like Star Wars and Star Trek fans, Harry Potter fans dedicated their lives and careers to the series. I don't know if I'd call it "underground," but liking Harry Potter got you beaten up when I was in school, so it was more of a dedicated indie culture than a mass-appeal fanbase.
Harry Potter was so huge that fan works developed their own followings. Potter Puppet Pals racked up hundreds of thousands of followers and was nearly as relevant as the series itself. For fanfiction, Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality got so big that it has a Wikipedia page. The band Harry and the Potters spawned the wizard rock music genre. A Very Potter Musical developed a fanbase and launched Darren Criss's career.
Harry Potter also has extensive ties to fandom history. Everyone in my generation (millennials) remembers coming home from school to read Harry Potter fanfiction on the Internet. Today, most people just post their stories on Wattpad or Archive of Our Own. But at the time, the fanbase was splintered between fanfiction.net and dozens of individual websites and forums, some made for specific ships. Since they all had individual hosts, a lot of those sites have been lost to time.
And there's the infamous My Immortal fanfiction, which is an Internet legend with people still searching for the author. Everybody read that one (and laughed at it) in middle school.
Pre-social media, fan sites like The Leaky Cauldron and Mugglenet had massive followings because they were one of few sources for news, theories, essays and fan content. Some of these sites still exist after being around for over a decade and building their own legacy.
Before Deathly Hallows came out, fans were so desperate to know what happened that Mugglenet published a book called What Will Happen in Harry Potter 7: Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Falls in Love and How Will the Adventure Finally End? Yep...Harry Potter was so big that people wrote separate books about what would happen in an upcoming book.
And that's not mentioning all the book release parties, Harry Potter-themed events, monuments, fan films, restaurants and even a theme park. A lot of fandoms have those, but Harry Potter infiltrated every aspect of popular culture.
Today, there's a thriving culture of "Harry Potter adults" with themed weddings, baby showers and Etsy stores. Putting your Hogwarts house in your Instagram bio is pretty much a prerequisite for joining the "bookish" community. Warner still produces new content, like the Fantastic Beasts series, although we've all seen what a disaster that's been.
Everyone has at least a few memories associated with Harry Potter even if it's just watching the movies. I had great memories associated with Harry Potter. But looking back at the subculture, history and thousands of fan works, it doesn't seem fun anymore. Studying the fandom or being part of it comes with an awkward tension because you don't want to seem like you're condoning JKR's bigotry but can't divorce her from the series. This subculture was spawned by a woman who turned her legacy of magic and wonder into one of abuse and hatred.
I don't expect people to write paragraphs about how much they hate JKR every time they post about Harry Potter, but it's still uncomfortable to see people make new content or wear their Harry Potter Etsy tote bags like nothing happened. Even if they clarify that they don't support her, it's just a weird, tense situation for everybody.
People dedicated years of their lives to running Harry Potter fan sites, writing fanfiction, cosplaying characters and making fan movies. If I were in that situation, I'd have a mild identity crisis. I'd ask myself "Did I waste all those years? Should I delete my content? Where do I go from here?"
So ultimately, JKR didn't ruin "just" a book series or even "just" a fandom. She tanked an entire culture, which inspired people to look at Harry Potter more critically. The issues that people brought to the light tainted the series's legacy even without JKR's personal issues.
Once, Harry Potter was a series for generations. Now, former fans hope that the series fades into irrelevancy. Unfortunately, JKR didn't just tarnish her legacy--she took decades of history, millions of fans and a worldwide subculture along with her.

Do you use blsky? Why push for everyone to learn a new system and build from scratch if Tumblr and Bsky are wonderful alternatives that already work? /genq
I haven't made a blsky yet because none of my friends have it, but I know a ton of artists I follow use it so I've been thinking of it. But then again, I have a degree in social media and communications so social media and I have a love hate relationship
Blogging is just fun and used to be a big thing. I loved learning how to write articles and creating a website where I posted about dedicated things (blogs are normally dedicated to specific topics)
People have been talking about starting actual blogs and bringing it back for a while now. This isn't just a me thing, I see the posts circulate every month. I know a ton of younger people don't know how blogs work because they either don't interact with blogs or aren't old enough at the time they were around (also true with forums, reddit is a branch off of them but kinda muddled down). They're also way easier to organize content and find content within your blog
This isn't some "everyone abandon your social media" thing. It is simply a "hey guys. We should get back into make this a thing again and have fun! People seem into it!". It's just another fun thing you can do, and it isn't really a social media in itself. It's like YouTube but in written form of that makes sense? Blogs also help a LOT with things because normally it's people talking about a topic, a lot post things to help people or people can learn through them, and they are more accessible than a lot of apps. A ton of apps make it so you have to have accounts to view content and it can be hard to find things
People also love trying new things. And the best part is that if you don't want to do it, you don't have to tbh. Its like how anyone can make an account on any social media platform. It's because they want to and for fun. You will always have to learn new systems and it happened with RedNote and the small mechanics of Blsky. Blogs just died out because of social media apps and the shift of the internet. It's like saying why get a radio, CD, or records if everyone is using Spotify or Apple Music. And blogs are still used to today, just like records/CDs/radio, you just don't see them because you're not interested in blogs/or their topics or might not be the age of people who prefer them. But they're very much alive and some have big followings. Neocities is the current popular one for people our age due to it being fully codable and replicating old blogs. Literally that's the website everyone who keeps talking about us starting real blogs again are using and pushing. I just happen to know WordPress because of my degree needing one for a class portfolio
(fun fact, a Utah mom blog is actually the reason that Stanley's are popular. A mom blog group got one from a bed, bath, and beyond and sent it to a girl who was on the bachelor because the girl was pregnant. The girl showed it on her social media and then middle ages moms got them, which caused 20 year olds and teenagers to get them. Then the Kia soul caught fire and the Stanley survived and the girl posted it on Tiktok and more people got them due to it going viral. Then it went from there. I did a case study on it in my classes. Stanley's were originally for working class men but now cater for women because of the craze)
And also me wanting to create a directory with submissions allow people to look for specific dedicated blogs and make it easier to network from there since you HAVE to network or post in a certain format to make it onto search pages (like Google and Bing). Creating an organized directory so you can find blogs on cooking, sewing, fursuits, art tips and progress, gardening, etc is such a big help and way to push for growth for free
But yeah. I'm not the first one to say this and want this, I'm only someone trying to put dedication into keeping one of the oldest forms of socializing on the internet going by trying to help my age range and younger to get involved in it
Sorry this is long. I genuinely have a passion for these things and want to explain it in detail in a genuine manor. It might be a little convoluted and repeating, but you'll get what I mean (all /nm and /gen)
Genuinely, if you don't want to participate, you don't have to. Blogging isn't for everyone and everyone will do theirs differently. So just do what you want to do!

this literally only works using english tho… e.g. in chinese, the adjective for noisy and the word for noise are 2 completely different words, and the word for smell and taste are almost interchangeable
this paper looks at the codability of senses across 20 languages, including 3 different sign languages, and found that the codability hierarchy goes something like
[color, taste] > [shape, sound, touch] > smell
[color, taste] > shape > [sound, touch] > smell
in which case, the most ordinary object is likely a red and edible item, with a tangible form that conforms to a common shape, doesn’t make much noise and has little smell.
maybe a tomato. since it’s round and can grow in most places.
the default way for things to taste is good. we know this because "tasty" means something tastes good. conversely, from the words "smelly" and "noisy" we can conclude that the default way for things to smell and sound is bad. interestingly there are no corresponding adjectives for the senses of sight and touch. the inescapable conclusion is that the most ordinary object possible is invisible and intangible, produces a hideous cacophony, smells terrible, but tastes delicious. and yet this description matches no object or phenomenon known to science or human experience. so what the fuck
#making stupid debates for fun#but actually i was just annoyed that english was assumed as the default#not even the most spoken language in the world#i like tomatoes

Usually, boys’ boarding schools provide students with complex curriculums that focus on moral and spiritual development of the personality, as well as on the development of the students’ personal features, such as perseverance and teamwork. These programmes help students to be ready for other situations in their future educational pursuits or at the workplace. First and foremost, the boarding school compel the students to practice initiative, time management and hard work since it is a structured institution.

Besides, these schools also encourage discipline and order in schools and have a support system of role models and other students.
Conclusion
Lastly, boarding schools provide students with an experience that is unique and academic challenge coupled with character transformation. The unique selling proposition of Dehradun boarding schools such as geographical location of the school and quality education become the hallmark of Dehradun boarding schools. In today’s word the advantages of all boys boarding schools are evident, firstly for the parents, secondly for the boys themselves that attend such schools as it gives them an opportunity to learn in a specialized setting and become better people not only academically but in other areas of their lives as well.
Selecting the boarding school for boys is one of the most significant decisions that determine students’ success at any school or college. Choosing one of the leading boarding schools in Dehradun means that the student will receive a complete education for the further successful life.

4-16-24: Day 60
Day 60 consisted of another milestone and the fifth consolidation day, reviewing what I learned, key points, and a challenge to build another complete app from scratch by ourselves:
Key Points:
Custom Codable keys
Completely custom Codable implementations
Challenge: Use URLSession to download some JSON from the internet, use Codable to convert it to Swift types, then use NavigationStack, List, and more to display it to the user. Your first step should be to examine the JSON. There is an array of people, and each person has an ID, name, age, email address, and more. They also have an array of tag strings, and an array of friends, where each friend has a name and ID. At the very least you should 1) Fetch the data and parse it into User and Friend structs, 2) Display a list of users with a little information about them, such as their name and whether they are active right now, 3) Create a detail view shown when a user is tapped, presenting more information about them, including the names of their friends, and 4) Before you start your download, check that your User array is empty so that you don’t keep starting the download every time the view is shown:
I never fully grasped how to handle JSON before starting this project, and I learned so much in the past 24 hours, not only that. It taught me a lot. Tomorrow, I'll fix the date format, add the colors and designs I deemed lower priority, and review for Day 59's challenges. I interrogated the hell out of an AI, learned more in a day than I have in the past 5 days, and I'm going to sleep.
Day 60 quote: "I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're doing something." - Neil Gaiman

Huh, dunno if any of my followers care about the magnus archives still:
Opened itunes and there was a new thing to play on the TMA feed. Posted a few days ago on the 13th. It’s just Martin says “Huh, are you still listening?” and then some typical TMA spooky noises.
There’s a weird string of letters and numbers that might be something de-codable, or jibberish (I entered it into some auto-solvers and got nothing)
Dunno if this could be a sign of more TMA stuff in the future? Or just a plug for websites/other podcasts etc and it’s nothing lol

Okay so I am obsessed with your spampokemon evolution line, but the spameo evolution bugged me because it didnt feel canon adjacent, so i did some digging
There's already an evolution item called dubious disk in the game, so if you ever wanted to make a rom havk you could recolor it yellow and BOOM
Okay so held item plus a specific level isnt really used in the games, which is what made me want to do this. However, what is done, is held item, friendship, and level up (umbreon and espeon even have certain times so im gonna say adding a condition to the level up is definitely codably possible).
In this situation, to keep spamshot from evolving too early, you'd require him to not have low friendship. This ties in because in game Spam at least has to trust Kris enough to let them carry around his data in the loaded disk in the first place. To make this harder, spamshot's friendship could start at zero (which is uncommon, but is done with some pokemon).
Finally, regarding the idea of a condition on the level up; a conditional evolution level up that is used in the games is the idea of a location based level up. For magnemite theres a magnetic field and for leafeon and glaceon they have moss and ice rocks that are part of the field. So you could definitely make spamshot being required to level up in a glitch zone feasible.
Anyways these are just some thoughts I had about his evolution! Perhaps just because im like 'god i wish it to be possible to make a spamtonmon rom hack' lmao.
OH WTF UR SMART. i actually was going to make him a friendship level thing at first but wanted to go with the whole 1997 thing, the friendship might actually fit better, but ur big brain
