Inktober begins!!

I will *try* to do it daily this year and the topic will be cat species.
Starting with the obscure Pantanal cat (Leopardus braccatus) from Brasil. I love their striped legs and serious faces! They mean business.
which should I draw next?

"Grumpy, but loyal" (2021)
I have this tradition of sorts. Every year, I travel to my parents' house for the holidays. And while I'm there, I tend to do this pencil OC picture, the last art piece oft he year. This was done with a brand new color pencils box I got for Christmas 2021.
I wanna repeat this tradition this year, too!
And yeah, since this is an archive, my biggest difficulty updating tumblr is checking to make sure I don't upload the same picture twice, haha.

"Dust bath" (2014) and "Scratch, scratch" (2012)
When in doubt, I always enjoy drawing ats being silly!
Long time no post... I'm finishing Summer's break, and not at all eager to get back to work. On the positive side, if everything goes as planned, I should be maknig some important changes this year, and switching works over, to a new one where I'll make a bit less money, but will be far more satisfied. The change has already started, little by little: in addition to previous teaching work, I've gotten into university, where I'm mostly doing Investigation (I started in december). I want to take this further.
I hope you enjoy those! <3 I'll try to be more active as thingas go back to usual, even if I'll try my best for Work Switchover to happen as soon as possible (it will most likely take a few months though!)

The woman’s tone was thick with resentful disbelief, and Cinder smirked to herself as she stepped out into the chilly gloom of the back garden. It was wildly overgrown: an unkempt tangle of vegetation which clawed up the high walls and nearly swallowed the old stone well. Other than the spill of dim light from inside, the shadows fell heavy and unbroken.
Cinder breathed it in. Unlike the faint trail she’d followed to find the place, the leys ran deep here, so strong she imagined she could almost hear them singing.
Ignoring Kiara’s irksome presence behind her, she made a slow circuit of the garden. The foliage rustled more than could reasonably be accounted for by her movements, and once or twice she glimpsed a pair of small, beady red eyes shining amidst the leaves—colocolo, she thought, but they were quick and averse to light and it was hard to get a good look.
And still nothing from Salem.
Her lips pressed into a thin line. “You think I’ve misread you,” she said, filled with venom now. “After all, you did ask a few questions, and you learnt… respect.” Although Cinder would sooner call it fear. Lazily: “‘Does it hurt? Can it feel? How did you get it? Will Salem do the same for me?’—so mercenary.”
Clicking her tongue, she passed her foot through a chaotic mat of brambles and struck wood: a dull, hollow thock. The brambles parted like curtains with a mere flick of her wrist, not overgrown here so much as draped with intension to conceal the slanted door jutting out from the foundations.
She grinned.
This door, too, had been closed with a seal that evaporated when Cinder brushed her hand against the wood. She contemplated the padlock on the handle for a moment before simply gripping it tight and wrenching on it with all the considerable strength in her left arm; there was a crunching sound inside the lock, and it sprang loose, pitifully.
“…You’re terrified of Salem,” she added as she tossed open the door to reveal the pitch-black maw of a cellar, “and yet here you are to beg at her table for scraps without ever stopping to consider that she might feel… disinclined… to show such favor to you.”
The stairs were narrow and had no railing; Cinder kindled a fistful of fire so she could see what she was jumping into and then simply leapt over the side to land, catlike, on her feet.
More bookcases lined these grimy brick walls, crammed with hexagonal prisms of jet-black dust: inert, stable, the kind Salem favored for long-term storage. And, set unobtrusively in the far corner opposite the stairs, was a door.
It stood unsupported by the walls, with a gap on either side large enough to fit a hand through; and Cinder could not fit the life of her tell what it was made out of. It almost had the look of charred stone. The full Sigillum Strigis glistened wetly upon it, as though drawn in fresh blood. There was no seal on it—she could tell that even from across the room—but it radiated a darker power. She doubted anyone could open it but Salem.
Setting her jaw, Cinder stride across the cellar and reached up to press her hand over the pupil of the slatted eye.
Cinder had started off strong, and Kiara was ready to be laid out in the most shameful manner, but the longer she went on, the farther she strayed, until Kiara’s mouth hung slightly agape. The clink of Cinder’s mug against the wood of the table punctuated the verdict of Kiara’s character like a judge’s gavel, and as Cinder threw a derisive smile her way, Kiara snapped her slack jaw shut and simply stared.
She wasn’t at all sure where along the way she had gone so wrong as to give Cinder the impression she held. She didn’t recall saying much since they met. Aside from her recent outburst, it was mostly questions and some rather self deprecating admissions; nothing that should have given Cinder the impression that she . . . that she felt she hadn’t deserved what she’d gotten. That she felt that anyone owed her anything for her mistakes! She certainly wasn’t inclined to feel grateful towards Cinder, but that was only because she didn’t believe for a second that her helping her in this way was motivated by anything but personal gain. And well, she wasn’t exactly an individual that was easy to feel grateful towards either. The picture Cinder painted was of one of the most despicably arrogant people Kiara could readily imagine. Had she not told Cinder that she had learned her lesson? Learned respect for her enemy? Had she not been trying to ask Cinder questions in order to better understand the 'forces she was dealing with' this whole time? Perhaps not as diligently as she could have, but she doubted pressing harder would have gotten her anywhere. There was just no winning with this one.
She realized Cinder was heading for the back door and made another attempt to stand, feeling it unwise to remain seated. She did manage it this time, without an ounce of grace, and simply stood there, allowing her swollen stump to settle down and become accustomed to bearing weight again, despite the pain.
One point Cinder had made did give her pause. Did she see something of herself in Cinder? The thought made an awful sort of amusement bubble up from under the surface of her bruised incredulity and frustrated hopelessness. Perhaps she did. Certainly in the assured way Cinder had just told her the nature of her own thoughts and feelings. She hadn’t been so different once.
Kiara nearly flinched at Cinder’s use of girl again; she wished Cinder would stop calling her that. It called to mind a large, gentle hand pushing fingers through her hair and a very different voice, a voice that was forever silenced because of her. Her stomach lurched and she shoved those memories away.
Kiara watched Cinder’s hand on the door handle warily, unsure of what she would see beyond the threshold and if the presence of the wards would come rushing in or not. “Well, it sounds as though you’ve got me all figured then, haven’t you Cinder.”
She muttered darkly. It burned her to concede such untruths. But attempting to change Cinder’s mind wasn’t worth the waste of energy, and seemed an insurmountable task anyway. It didn’t really matter what this girl thought of her, in the end, as long as she was willing to help her. Besides, Kiara had said she would give her the benefit of the doubt. She didn’t have much about herself she cared for, but she did try to be honest. If she held to nothing else here, she would at least hold to that.

Round 3 - Mammalia - Microbiotheria

(Source)
Once representative of a vast diversity of marsupials as they slowly migrated from South America, to Antarctica, and finally to Australia, today the order Microbiotheria has one remaining living species: Dromiciops gliroides, known as the “Monito del Monte” or “Colocolo Opossum,” which is native only to Argentina and Chile.
Dromiciops are small, nocturnal, and arboreal. They spend most of the day in a state of torpor, conserving their energy to only become active at night. Living mainly in trees, they use their partially prehensile tail to help them climb. Their tail is furred on top and naked on the underside, increasing friction when gripping onto bark. The base of their tails also function as fat storage during winter hibernation. As protection from the cold, particularly during periods of hibernation, they construct and live in spherical nests of water-resistant bamboo (Chusquea culeou) leaves. They line their nests with moss or grass, and place them in well-protected areas of their tree, such as underbrush, tree cavities, or fallen timber. The nests are sometimes covered with gray moss as a form of camouflage. Monitos del monte are omnivorous, with a diet consisting mainly of insects and fruit, with the mistletoe berry quintral (Tristerix corymbosus) being most favored.
Monitos del monte have a monogamous mating system. Before hibernation, females are generally larger than males, but not year round. They have well-formed, fur-lined pouches, and normally reproduce in the spring, once a year. They can have a litter size varying from one to five. However, they can feed a maximum of four offspring on four teats, so if there are five young, one will not survive. When the young are mature enough to leave the pouch, at approximately five months, they are nursed in a distinctive nest. They are then carried on the mother's back. The young remain with their mother after weaning, reaching sexual maturity after two years.
The fossil record for Microbiotherians is large and dates back to the Early Paleocene, with the oldest known Microbiotherian being Khasia cordillerensis of Bolivia. Fossils are known from South America, Western Antarctica, and northeastern Australia. But the monito del monte is the last of this lineage.

Propaganda under the cut:
When preparing for hibernation, Monitos del Monte can store enough fat to double their body size within one week!
The Monito del Monte has a mutualistic seed dispersal relationship with the mistletoe species Tristerix corymbosus. The marsupial eats the fruit of the plant, and germination takes place in its gut. It then poops out the seeds, planting them. The monito del monte is the only dispersal agent for this plant, and without it the plant would likely become extinct.
The tick species Ixodes neuquenensis can only be found on the Monito del Monte, and would also likely become extinct without it.

To celebrate Bedtime Heirlooms being out, I wanted to share doodles of the facial designs for Zerki and Terya, Catra's siblings, from Chapter 2 onward.
Design rambles below the cut:
Zerki is designed after an Ocelot, he is quite lanky. I took inspirations from jaguars for Terya, but she has more of a leopard build instead of the stockiness of jaguars. They both have prominent markings on their face and body, whereas Catra has very faint markings that just show as slightly bigger freckles. Her body stripes in my story are more prominent than in canon since she is modelled after a Colocolo cat, she also has slightly darker hands to reflect this.

I chose these specific species bc they are all species of cats present in the jungles and grasslands of the American continent. Their home country is modelled after these biomes and some of its prehispanic cultures (aesthetically and linguistically it's a mix of Maya and Aztec) back in the Magicat planet - Felerys.
I'll make full character design sheets one day when I have more time, but I just wanted to share their faces so you have a visual when you're reading the story!

At that point, he's investigating the Straight Thunders before having a run-in with Crain's brigade.
