Female Speckled Hummingbird by Adam Rainoff Via Flickr: The Speckled Hummingbird (Adelomyia melanogenys) is a delightful resident of the Andean cloud forests, and capturing this species at La Minga Ecolodge near Cali, Colombia, was a rewarding experience. This particular individual perched briefly among striking purple flowers, offering a perfect opportunity to highlight its warm brown plumage and characteristic speckled chest. The soft natural light filtering through the forest canopy provided even illumination, allowing the fine details of its feathers to shine against the vibrant greens and purples of its environment. Using a Canon R5 paired with a 100-500mm lens at 500mm, I had initially set the shutter speed to 1/1000 second in TV mode to freeze hummingbirds in flight. However, when this bird landed unexpectedly, I quickly captured the moment, knowing the R5’s advanced stabilization would maintain sharpness, even with this low shutter speed. The composition took advantage of the surrounding flora to frame the subject, creating an intimate portrayal of this elusive species. Encounters like these remind me of the privilege and responsibility we have as photographers to showcase the delicate beauty of nature. ©2021 Adam Rainoff Photographer

The spoiled sister in Diamonds and Toads becomes a prolific environmentalist with a lot of focus in frog habitats. She's also the first name to call when scientist notice a specific region's frogs are worryingly low.
That is actually the core concept of my favourite @tkingfisher story! The idea that she could control what amphibian comes out of her mouth depending on how/what she speaks has been nestled in my brain ever since I read it <3
#I also especially love that the two sisters stay close#the “blessed” sister funds her sister's travels/conservation efforts#having roses or gems come from your mouth happens quite a lot in fairy tales and when you think about it it /really/ cannot be as pleasant#as they make it out to be

Shots from Historic Crystal Cave in Kutztown, PA.
Discovered by William Merkel and John Gehret while they were blasting for limestone on November 12, 1871. It has been a preserved and developing attraction since. Its lowest discovered point is 155 feet below the surface and some of its formations are half a million years old. I highly recommend taking the tour and supporting its conservation! :)

I personally think that a lot of people in this fandom came to this fandom not because they like music or art. They came to this fandom because they like smut filled fanfiction, celebrity drama and conspiracy theories. So if you take that away, the fandom holds little meaning for them.
I just find some Larries taking it to a place of personal vendetta against a child and a couple of 20 year old girls who have had to deal with numerous tragedies very cruel. Whatever they get out of it, is it worth being that nasty to some really young people?
When I read that Freddie has been “instructed as an actor,” I actually feel nauseous for that level of depravity.
They do it because they think of Louis, Freddie, and the Tomlinson girls as players in a game like “Clue,” and the object of the game is to win no matter the cost, because the Tomlinsons aren’t real.
“Don’t blame us, blame Louis.”
The fandom is insane, disconnected from reality, actually sadistic. You see something like this and you understand why cults cause tragedies. People are insanely cruel.
#when I think of all the things I’ve seen in this fandom#and personally experienced#and think there’s nothing I haven’t seen already#harry styles fans and larries always sink to a lower level than I could imagine#don’t get me wrong#solo Louies can also be incredibly toxic cruel and ruthless — as well as deceptive#the people they’re closest to probably don’t even realize how much they’re being lied to#but that’s their business#not mine anymore#I remember all the people who have lied to the point of making strangers travel across the country and then lying to them#I live in a conservative region and work with a lot of socially conservative people#but they’ve never behaved as badly as the so called fans who care for justice in this fandom 😂😂😂#this fandom has been a real DSM V experience for sure

Steely-vented Hummingbird by Adam Rainoff Via Flickr: The Steely-vented Hummingbird (Saucerottia saucerottei) is a captivating species native to the tropical and subtropical forests of Central and South America. This photo, taken at La Minga Ecolodge near Cali, Colombia, captures a female perched gracefully amidst a backdrop of soft green tones. Her iridescent green feathers glisten in the natural light, with hints of blue and gold adding depth to her plumage. At 1988 meters above sea level, this location offers the perfect environment to observe the diversity of hummingbirds that thrive in Colombia, a country known for its remarkable avian richness. From a technical perspective, this image was taken with a Canon R5 and a 100-500mm lens at 500mm. The camera was set to TV mode with a shutter speed of 1/1000 second, ready for action shots, but this hummingbird’s momentary stillness provided an opportunity to switch focus. The fading light required me to raise the ISO to 800, a setting the R5 handles with ease, delivering a noise-free result that preserves fine details. Handheld at this focal length, the camera’s stabilization ensured sharpness while maintaining flexibility to adjust composition on the fly. ©2021 Adam Rainoff Photographer

Greetings, fellow travelers! 🌎
On this blog you will find wild stories, stunning photos, quotes, random gossip, whimsy & snark, from staff and visitors to:
Museums 🏛️
Science centers 🔭
Zoos 🐼
Aquariums 🦈
Botanical gardens 🌿
& related institutions.
I have some stories of my own to tell, and I want to hear about your experiences in these places, too!
About me: I just took early retirement after working for more than 25 years as the web designer, editor, and photographer for a natural history museum. I have a BA in anthropology and a master's in museum studies. I had graduate assistantships in the exhibits, entomology, and geology/paleontology departments of the university museum where I was working towards my degree. Before that, I worked as a sort of general assistant in a small science museum. Earlier still, I volunteered with the exhibits team at a science & nature center that also had a small zoo.
My parents were both scientists - mom was a high school biology teacher (and a botanist by training) and dad was a physicist. They both loved to travel, and we did a lot of that when I was a kid. We took a few cross-country road trips, and also took trips to Canada, France, the UK and Switzerland. I've done limited travel on my own to Germany and Denmark. I've been to museums and similar places on most of these trips. I plan to share my thoughts on those experiences here.
Please join me in exploring the world of museums!
