Who is he?

Gilear Faeth is Fig Faeth's adoptive dad and Sandra Lynn Faeth's ex-husband. He is a wood elf who's lost some hair since his divorce and now wears it in a comb-over, which is a unique look on an elf. He's got a little bit of a paunch. He is often described as being sad and pitiable. He wears a short-sleeved king button up shirt which is often stained, usually with yogurt, but one time it was beans.

Why is he the NPC of All Time?

Adopted by Mylar Nabthacks, Aurora the beautiful Royal Blue Mastiff was known as top dog for the Carbine Kennel Dog Show! Stealing the spotlight from Hyacinth Khrome and her dog. Hyacinth hires the Gunner Channel to steal Aurora so she can win the dog show.

Why is she the NPC of All Time?

Aurora Nebbins is an NPC which was clearly intended to only be in the one - two episode arc of the Gunner Channel stealing her. However they quickly became attatched to her and like all good NPCs she became an integral member of the party and animal companion / friend to Sundry Sidney in particular.

Taylor said SOTB is about falling in love in a "cataclysmic, faded moment" at the same time and asking if it is really happening. SOTB is rare love song on Midnights that references an ex and 1989. it’s I Wish you would set later with Harry.

Lyric video

The lyric video recreates the 1989 Rolling Stone shoot, which she previously did in part of the End Game music video that also references Harry. In End Game this refers to "I don't wanna hurt you (I just wanna be) / Drinkin' on a beach with (you all over me)".

An 80's icon (a la 1989), Janet was going through a divorce from a low-profile/secret marriage when she wrote All for You. All for you is about sexual liberation of being newly single. Taylor and Joe's long low-profile relationship was ending when SOTB was released, we hadn’t seen Joe much for a year, they walked in NY on release day and never again. The split was announced 5 months later.

Literal Snow on a beach

On 29 December 2011 Taylor posted a photo on a beach with light snow behind her. The shadows on her hair show the sun was either setting or rising inland. It's most likely in the afternoon on a western coast. It snows on the beach in NJ, but that would be very early in the morning and hadn't snowed that year. It did snow on the beach in Liverpool that year, 50 minutes from Harry Styles family house where he was that day. Taylor hadn't been seen for 2 weeks before this photo. See more in 2011 timeline.

Time is no match for her feelings for the muse, it’s been years and she’s still dreaming of him. 'Life is emotionally abusive' because she’s not moved on despite her efforts to have a new life.

Finally, the flight tells us she and the muse are apart, UK/US or with tours, but she doesn't mind she is unglued at the thought of being with her 'cataclysmic' muse (...her calamitous love. ;))

'Weird, but beautiful and dreamlike' depict the joyous feeling of your desire being reciprocated. She's longed for this person so much she's unglued at the idea that it could actually happen after all the time that passed in verse 1.

'No sound' is also similar to 'you can hear it in the silence' from 'You are in love' which is a beautiful moment. In 'You are in love' she sang that you could tell it was love without words, as here. However, we know the absence of those words haunts them, here's hoping for a good post-beach-fireworks chat.

Harry’s leaked Trouble also refers to snow in an unexpected, beachy place “It never snows in Hollywood / But when we sang it showed us that it could”

I searched "aurora borealis green" and lit from within and blurring out her periphery are references to Harry's green eyes and the magnetic presence she has sung about in other songs.

In the later released 1989 Vault track Suburban Legends his phone caught her peripheral vision. In Snow on the Beach she's so blissful to be back together she's putting past insecurities aside.

She goes on to resolve to let herself be in this blissful moment, get out of her own way and let her feelings be known. She ends with faking it till you make it. I read that as her seeing and setting aside her insecurities until she is confident and feels secure.

Chapter 9 - Gold meets Belle's friends and has a bit of a revelation.

The Rabbit Hole was, by anyone’s standards, a dive. Management had a fondness for hair bands and glam rock, the pool tables were uneven and missing cloth in places, and the drink choices weren’t exactly top shelf. It was Belle’s favorite spot for drinks and girl talk, and she was positively vibrating with excitement over the fact that at last her two worlds were about to collide.

Of course, there were some nerves mixed up with that excitement, too. She wasn’t worried, exactly, but she wanted Rum and her friends to get along. Their reception of her previous boyfriends had been lukewarm at best, and she’d been disappointed, but this time - well, she wasn’t sure what she would do if they didn’t like Rum.

“Belle!” Ruby waved her over to their table, and Belle slid onto a stool next to Ariel and across from Mulan and Ruby. “God, I haven’t seen you in ages!”

“I know, I��m sorry,” Belle grimaced.

“You don’t need to be sorry. You’ve got a new guy, everyone’s allowed a bunny rabbit stage.”

“That’s very generous of you.”

“It’s the most crucial stage, when you figure out if you’re compatible,” Ariel said.

Ruby leaned forward, crossing her arms and resting them on the table. “So…”

“So?” Belle asked innocently, waving the server over.

“Are you?”

“Am I what?”

Mulan rolled her eyes and Ruby growled. “Compatible, you doofus!”

Smiling, Belle mirrored Ruby’s posture. She waited for a few seconds, allowing the suspense to get to them. Finally, she took a deep breath. “Yes.” The server approached them, and she leaned back and ordered a Long Island iced tea. When she looked at her friends, they were all staring at her. “What?”

“What? What?” Ruby looked ready to explode. “You talk about this guy for weeks. You disappear for days at a time doing God knows what with him. You...you... I mean, you might as well have big pink hearts floating out of your eyes. And that’s all you have to say!?”

“We’re compatible,” Belle said. “Very compatible. Sometimes we’re compatible two or three times in a night.”

“But he’s older, right? He doesn’t have any...issues?” Ariel said delicately.

“Not so far, but even if he did, that wouldn’t necessarily be a problem.”

Mulan grinned. “Good for him. Everyone appreciates a lover with multiple skill-sets.”

“So, it’s good,” Ruby said. “Really good.”

Belle sighed and took a sip of her drink. “I’m not giving you the details, Rubes, but...it’s the best sex of my life.”

The ladies went silent, and Belle was able to take a few more sips in peace.

“Wait. Really?” Ariel said incredulously. “Better than Will?”

“Better than anyone.” Belle sighed. “I really, really like him.”

“No, you don’t,” Mulan said seriously. She studied Belle, her gaze somber. “You don’t like him. You’re in love with him.”

Belle nearly choked on her drink. Sputtering, she stared at Mulan through watering eyes. “What?”

“You’re in love with him.”

“I think she’s right,” Ariel said, her eyes going wide. Ruby’s face was carefully blank, and Belle tried to laugh them off.

“Guys, we’ve been dating about a month. We just decided to put a label on it.”

“Silver fox at two o’clock,” Ruby said suddenly. “Is that your guy, Belle?”

Belle turned and saw that Rum had, indeed, entered and was standing uncomfortably just inside the door. Her pulse picked up when she saw that he was dressed as impeccably as ever despite the fact that she’d warned him about the less-than-refined atmosphere of the Rabbit Hole. His suit was a black pinstripe, his shirt royal blue and his tie darker with a red pattern. The gold handle of his cane glittered in the low light of the bar, and the silver in his hair gleamed.

God, he was gorgeous.

“Yeah,” she said with a slow smile. “That’s him.”

She lifted one hand to get his attention and he smiled, raising his hand in response before walking toward them.

“Huh,” Ariel said.

“What?”

“I just...never found a limp attractive before.”

Ruby and Mulan laughed, but Belle knew exactly what Ariel meant. There was a sinuous grace in his unsteady walk that had captured her attention very early on, and it had taken her by surprise too.

When he came up to their table, Belle spun her stool around to face him. “Hey.”

“Hey.” He leaned in to give her a gentle kiss, and Belle smiled against his lips. “I’m sorry I’m late.”

“That’s okay, gave us a chance to catch up. Ladies, this Rum - Roderick Gold. Rum, this Ruby Lupin, Ariel Delmar, and Mulan Fa.”

“A pleasure,” Ruby said as the other women nodded. “So tell us, Rum.” She leaned forward again, a wolfish grin on her face. “Just how many times did Belle have to offer to sleep in your office before you got the hint?”

Belle had warned him that her friends were forward, but she wouldn’t have blamed him if he’d got up and walked out. She buried her face in her hands and groaned, but Gold smiled. “Well, dearie, I can’t say I ever did actually get the hint.”

“You must have or you wouldn’t be here now.”

“I owe that entirely to Belle’s...tenacity.”

All three ladies laughed and Belle emerged from her hiding place. “That’s very diplomatic of you, darling,” she said dryly. “You can just say that I pounced on you like a tiger on a gazelle.”

“A very beautiful, graceful tiger,” he said, taking her hand and bringing it to his lips.

“I’d tell you to get a room, but that’s probably happening later anyway,” Ariel smirked.

“Where are Archie and Eric and Aurora?” Belle asked desperately. “I thought this was a group outing.”

“Are you kidding? This is an interrogation.” Mulan waved the server over again. “The SOs would close ranks and protect him. Right now we have him at our mercy.”

“I’m still here.”

“Like we can’t end-run you,” Mulan scoffed.

“There’s no reason to protect me, sweetheart,” Gold reassured her. “I’ve faced cross-examination before.”

“But…”

“Belle, do you remember what you said to Archie the first time I brought him around?” Ruby asked sternly.

“Uh…”

“You asked him if we’d ever used the couch in his office for extracurricular activities.”

“I…”

“You asked Eric if the skills needed to play the flute were useful in other settings,” Ariel pointed out.

“Well…”

Mulan shook a finger under Belle’s nose. “You asked Aurora if she liked morning sex since her name meant ‘dawn.’”

“Wait, I was really drunk that night,” Belle protested. “That was a terrible question and I thought it’d been expunged from the record.”

“Our point is that you’ve dished it out, so now you can take it,” Ruby said triumphantly. When Belle descended into sulky silence, Ruby grinned and turned her full attention on Gold. “So. Rum. All the lawyers I know are really smooth talkers. How does that translate to the bedroom?”

“God, I’m so sorry,” Belle moaned as they stood on the curb trying to hail a cab. “The things they asked you…”

Gold wound an arm around her waist and pressed a kiss to the top of her head. “It’s fine, sweetheart. They’re protective and only want the best for you. I just hope I measured up to their standards.”

He’d been more than a little terrified, walking into that bar tonight. Despite his limited experience with women, he knew that they cared deeply for the opinions of their friends, and he’d been anxious to make a good impression. Thankfully, he felt he’d accomplished that.

He liked them all. Ruby, who was brazen and outspoken but loved animals to distraction and was seriously involved with a mild-mannered psychologist. Ariel, the daydreaming sculptor with a passion for music who was seeing a flautist in the symphony orchestra. Mulan, a lieutenant in the army, older than the others and married to a woman named Aurora, and currently on leave and determined to make the most of her vacation.

They were fascinating women, all of them, and he found himself imagining similar get-togethers in the future that combined his family and friends with hers. He sensed that Mulan and Emma shared a penchant for hiding their vulnerability behind tough exteriors. Regina would delight in crossing verbal swords with Ruby, and he was sure Neal would appreciate Ariel’s musical taste and artistic ability. When the cab arrived, Belle had to poke him to jolt him out of his imaginings.

“What were you thinking just then?” she asked.

“That I liked your friends, and I hoped they liked me.”

“Oh, they did,” she said, pulling out her phone. “Look.” She showed him a group chat, which featured three thumbs-up images in a row, one from each of the women. “Congratulations. Or condolences. I’m not sure which is more appropriate.”

“Anyone would consider themselves lucky to have those ladies as friends,” he said, and she sighed.

“Yeah, well, they haven’t pulled out the big guns yet.”

“There are...bigger guns?” Gold’s mind started to race. What more could they possibly require of him? Drinking contests? Arm-wrestling?

“They didn’t ask the tough questions.”

Considering that they’d asked him about his favorite positions, his favorite fantasies, and his favorite flavor of body paint - a question he’d had no idea how to answer, never having heard of such a thing - he dreaded discovering what those questions were. For now, he saw that she looked worried, so he pulled her closer to him.

“They can ask me anything they want and I’ll answer honestly, unless you ask me not to divulge something.”

Her eyes searched his face, warming when she recognized his sincerity, and she snuggled into his shoulder. “You’re so sweet.”

Sweet. A word that he’d never have used to describe himself before he met Belle French, but here he was comforting his girlfriend in a cab after her friends had run him through the wringer. “Must be contagious,” he said.

When they reached her apartment, Belle made tea and brought it into the living room. He was used to this now, the quiet domesticity of just sitting in a room with someone, sipping tea and sometimes making the odd remark. Belle’s expression, though, told him she had something on her mind.

“I feel bad,” she said. “You answered all of their questions so calmly and now I feel like I know a lot more about you than you know about me.”

“Well, it’s not as if we’re keeping score.”

“Yeah, but…” she waved a hand. “I want to level the playing field. Go on, ask me anything.”

Gold stared at her helplessly. What had been casual and fun in the dingy bar felt intimate and tense in her immaculate living room. Here there were no others to absorb uncomfortable silences or distract them from unexpected embarrassment. Belle watched him over the edge of her mug, and when two minutes had ticked by without his saying anything, she took a deep breath.

“Okay, since you won’t ask...there’s something that’s been bothering me...something I want you to understand.”

He swallowed. “Oh?”

“Beryl - at one of our meetings she called me a - a whore. And it made me so angry and you were so gentle…”

“She had no right to…”

“It’s not like I don’t have a past,” Belle interrupted. “I do, but - I always wanted to meet the right guy, get married, settle down, all of that - and you can’t do that without dating.”

“Belle…”

“And I like sex, and I never saw any reason why I shouldn’t be with a guy I liked, so…”

“Sweetheart, stop.”

“I just don’t want you to think…”

“I don’t. I never would.”

Belle finally took another breath and smiled uncertainly. “You say that now, but…”

“I had an affair with a married woman while she was still my client,” Gold said flatly. “I’m hardly qualified to pass judgement. But even if my history were as pure as a monk’s, I would never think badly of you for yours.”

She still looked unconvinced, so he shifted closer, set her mug on the coffee table, took her hands in his, and pulled until she was encircled in his arms.

“I don’t care if you had one lover before me, or a dozen, or fifty,” he murmured, kissing her gently. “Your past is part of what makes you the person you are, and I happen to like that person very much.”

With a tiny sigh, Belle melted into his embrace, returning his kiss with a feverish intensity. After a moment she pulled back, her eyes slightly misty. “God, you’re so…”

She broke off abruptly and pulled back a little, her eyes widening and her mouth falling open. For a moment she looked frightened, and then the expression melted away and she reached up to brush his hair away from his eyes.

“What is it?” he asked.

Shaking her head, she leaned in and kissed him again. “I’ll tell you some other time. Come on, you earned serious brownie points tonight, and I think you should start redeeming them right this minute.”

She rose from the couch, one of his hands still clutched in hers, and he grinned, following her. If she were this easy to please, he might actually stand a chance in hell of keeping her around a while longer.

Later that night, as he watched her sleep, he imagined what it would be like to see her thus every night, to wake to her smiles and kisses every morning, to curl up and watch TV after dinner every evening, to receive joint invitations to events, to have his friends see him and ask “And how’s Belle?” He imagined squabbling over takeout menus and dissecting plays they’d seen, making her chicken soup when she was sick and massaging her feet when shows at the gallery ran late and she was run off her feet. He imagined that one some nights they’d both work too late to do anything but fall into bed and sleep like rocks, content in each other’s presence even without an amorous interlude.

Realization hit him and he sucked in a quiet breath, the blow almost physical. Somehow, despite carefully guarding his heart for twenty years, despite being certain he had everything and everyone he needed, despite all common sense, he’d fallen in love with her.

They’d been together a month, and already he couldn’t imagine life without her.

He rolled onto his back and stared at the ceiling, waiting for the dread to hit, but instead he felt utterly calm and at peace, as if his heart had known all along and had been waiting for his brain to catch up. Whether she felt, or could ever feel, the same way was a question for another day. For now, he had someone to share his nights and brighten his days, and he would enjoy it as long as it lasted.

The Smurfette

Who is Smurfette?  As most people know, Smurfette is the lone female Smurf in Smurfville originally created by the evil Gargamel in order to sow discord and jealousy among the other Smurfs.

In 1991, writer and cultural critic Katha Pollitt coined the term “Smurfette principle” to describe the trend of narratives in media overwhelmingly male focused but with one female character.  As she describes it,

“Contemporary shows are either essentially all-male, like “Garfield,” or are organized on what I call the Smurfette principle: a group of male buddies will be accented by a lone female, stereotypically defined… The message is clear. Boys are the norm, girls the variation; boys are central, girls peripheral; boys are individuals, girls types. Boys define the group, its story and its code of values. Girls exist only in relation to boys.”

The Smurfette principle is based on the main theory of Simone de Beauvoir’s analysis of women’s subservient role in society in her seminal work The Second Sex, but applied to our media.  The two videos below provide an even more comprehensive analysis of how this has played out.

In the two and a half decades since Pollitt coined this term, I’m pretty sure most people with a least a minor understanding of media theory are aware of this trope and why it’s an issue.  But I bring up the Smurfette principle in order to bring up a similar issue that I think a large chunk of our current-day #staywoke political landscape still has a blind spot to.

In the Feminist Frequency video, Anita Sarkeesian briefly mentioned the practice of inserting a token minority character in an overwhelmingly white cast.  This trope plays out much like the Smurfette principle; this character often serves as the stand-in for cultural diversity and provides and extremely reductive view of not just a minority being represented, but all minorities in general.

How would most people react if I or a group of people vocally demanded that Disney puts out a film with a black protagonist?  Most would get angry and before shooting the messenger would point to Tiana in The Princess and the Frog, right?  What would be the reaction if I or this same group demanded Disney creates a film with an Asian, Native American, or Polynesian protagonist?  Same thing, except insert Mulan, Pocahontas, or Moana instead, correct?

Now, how would most people react if Disney decided that they would never put a film starring a white protagonist again?  They would find that outrageous, right?

And that’s my point.  A good chunk of the population of get quite angry if Disney stated they would never have a white protagonist in any of their movies again.  Even if Disney went through with this, they would still have Snow White and the seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Cinderella and her step-family, Alice, Peter Pan and the Darlings, Princess Aurora and her fairy godmothers, Roger and Anita Radcliffe, Arthur, Penny from The Rescuers, Taran, Ariel, Cody from The Rescuers Down Under, Belle, Quasimodo, Hercules, Tarzan, Milo, Jim Hawkins, Lewis and the Robinsons, Rapunzel, Flynn and Mother Gothel, and Anna and Elsa to fall back on (this doesn’t even include their live-action movies or the Pixar films).  So why is it that people of color are expected to just shut up and smile over just one Tiana, Mulan, Pocahontas, or Moana?  It’s been almost ten years since The Princess and the Frog and there hasn’t even been a black character in any of their movies except for that one supporting character in Big Hero 6, let alone a black protagonist.  The only Asian protagonist in a Disney film in the almost twenty years since Mulan has been Hiro from Big Hero 6.  Native Americans have all but disappeared from Disney in the 20+ years since Pocahontas.  Moana is the most recent Disney film, but I’m betting that film will be Disney’s singular way of telling the Polynesian indiginous population…well, y’know…

That patronizing attitude is very much indicative of not just Disney’s application of minority characters, but also the attitude of a lot of liberal-minded websites, bloggers, and activists, many of which fight for greater representation of people of color.  When there is a minor step taken in more diverse representation, like a Polynesian Disney princess, a little black girl starring in one of DreamWorks’ films Home (there is George Beard in the upcoming Captain Underpants film, but that only brings the grand total up to two out of 35 films from that studio), or a multicultural retcon of a previously white Marvel superhero, it’s accompanied with a congratulatory, “mission accomplished” attitude that basks heavily (and unhealthily in my opinion) in the praise it gets.  Most recently, Disney has made a big deal about declaring the Gaston crony Le Fou gay in their live-action Beauty and the Beast remake.  My critiques here are in no way saying that it would be better for Disney or anybody else to not even try to diversify their media.  What I am saying is that one gay Le Fou is only a start.  One Polynesian princess is only a start.  One Pakistani Ms. Marvel is only a start.  Stopping with those token gestures is just the Smurfette principle with a different hat on.  It’s particularly offensive when token gestures like these are used as a masturbatory status symbol of one’s own #wokeness, as fuel to engage in menial online “more #woker than thou” pissing contests with other white liberals, or to reduce a rich culture to consumable commodity for your own profit.

In short, it’s this:

Our society conditions all of us to see whiteness or maleness or heterosexuality as the standard and anything outside of that as deviant.  It gets ingrained in our minds and gives us assumptions that we don’t question unless we force ourselves to.  I admit that when Nostalgia Chick talked about how the Smurfette principle applied to the Nicktoons, my knee-jerk thought was “But, but Rugrats has more than two major female characters and so does Doug!”  Those two shows don’t exist divorced from a Nicktoon landscape that viewed gender-neutral marketed shows with almost entirely dudes except maybe one or two female characters, one of which serves as some love interest or something.  The attitude behind the scenes of Rocko’s Modern Life when asked to add a character that was “a professional woman, someone with a good hook” was to snidely give their new female character a literal hook.  Considering that the only female protagonists in the long list of Nicktoons are Eliza Thornberry, Ginger Foutley, “Jenny” XJ-9, Bessie Higgenbottom, and Korra, there hasn’t been a lot of change in 25 years.  Heck, the only protagonists of color in any of the Nicktoons are Aang, Korra, Sanjay, Tak, Manny Rivera, and Jimmy Neutron’s Sheen in his short-lived spinoff.

Nobody from no gender, ethnic group, sexual affiliation, economic status, or anything can be reduced to a Smurfette.  And if anyone expects you to be satisfied with your Smurfette, you’re never out of line to demand this:

Chapter Reviews: April 30-May 4, 2019 + Thoughts on Upcoming Stories

Wishful Thinking Chapter 4:

I actually replayed the book again just to get the cat, and it was worth the purchase. Her lines amuse me.

Anyway, back to the chapter. The part where MC helped Louis and Sara reconcile was sweet, though I laughed at Sara saying that she received anti-wrinkle cream by accident. Nevertheless, it's a good start for MC to explore and develope her mind reading ability.

I have a soft spot for most animals, and the puppy is no exception. Even his dialogue is so adorable, especially when coupled with Jinx. I hope to see more of those two.

The library investigation was kinda fun, especially with the premium choice to go after the guy with the documents. Seriously, that got me intrigued. And hello again, Anna. It's nice to finally see her again despite being away for her boss, who happens to have a recycled model.

Bah, I can't stand Alec. First, he's initially dismissive towards the MC's ideas unless proven otherwise. Then, he forces Ellen to overwork only to shut her down (she may be no saint, but she's still entitled to fair working conditions as well as therapy). Seriously, I'd like to have him ejected and replaced with a better boss. I don't care that he takes back his word on the library after the MC's investigation. What really matters is that he should stop playing favorites. Nothing against my MC, just wishing that Alec would just behave or beware.

Gee, playing Wishful Thinking makes me miss Hero. It's not super good, but I still had fun playing it. Oh, how I wish Book 2 will be released soon. At least Wishful Thinking is fun to play so far.

High School Story: Class Act Chapter 12:

For the candidate I picked to stay, I chose Rory. Arts are underappreciated in Berry High and one one with the least focus compared to sports, which already has played significance on the plot (Book 1 of the first trilogy, for instance). I get that the twin's family, but they're still a freshman and probably not the strongest candidate, as well as particiapting in the election just because instead of having a more concrete motivation like Rory. I didn't go see Emerald with Rory and the twin, however.

I'm glad Ajay has found a support system in the form of talking with kids with divorced parents. He needs help as soon as possible, and I'm glad Emma has provided it. I wonder why the first trilogy MC is absent. After all, they mentioned in a premium scene that their parents are divorced as well.

Didn't attend Rory's cousin's wedding because Rory's not my love interest, so no interest in discussing it. Anyway, I just want this election drama to end and Lorenzo to realize that his platform is futile.

Across the Void Chapter 20:

Dang, that was another intense chapter. Sucks that I have to pay diamonds to save Aquari's life, but I did it anyway. Not to mention that the operation was a success with only one injury. Glad everyone's okay.

I'm gonna skip through the romance bits and jump straight to the upcoming landing on Cyber. I'm glad the MC is smart enough to ask Lyra about the meeting between the Vanguard and Jura on Cyber. After she said it was Barlow's idea, I'm now worried how the Atlas can disarm the trap the Void laid on them. I'm excited to see what's next.

America's Most Eligible Chapter 16:

I'm not surprised that Adam wears a tux and proposes to the MC, especially when Omar grabbed something from him in an earlier chapter. It was kind of romantic to propose after he was voted the most eligible because I chose not to pick the premium option to talk to the jury. Oh, well. Glad to see that my MC and Adam will spend the rest of their days in bliss, though I don't think an extra book just to get them married is necessary.

Ugh, can Piper be any more intrusive? If boasting about the Game of Love with Jen was bad enough, she had to barge into the mansion and bring up the smack talk. Glad Jen rejected the offer to join Piper's show, and Wrenn stood up against Piper. I didn't pick the option to give Piper a piece of my mind, but at least it was satisfying enough to watch Jen become showrunner.

Overall, I find Book 2 much weaker than Book 1. The double eliminations pretty much ensure that multiple people get eliminated, especially most of the new contestants. It's a shame, especially since Bianca could've been a proper love interest but was shoved aside in the end. While I appreciate Ivy, Vince, and Slater espousing a gray morality in their view of things, it remains untapped potential. Like, how can it be used to develop them further, especially Ivy because she's a contestant since Book 1. It gets worse when Ivy and Slater are practically interchangeable, effectively watering them down to the same person. And why do we need another marriage-based book? Do we already have enough?

Nightbound Chapter 3:

Luc seems nice and helpful, though I'm not still not sure whether my MC will pursue him. And the same goes for Cal, who seems to be a nice guy despite being a werewolf. I'm not pleased to run errands, but he does sound like he cares for his brother. And what's with Kristof having Nikolai Petrov's model? Made me wince, thought at least the octopus tattoo is gone.

Great. Another collection set. This time, it's similar to the portrait fragments in Bloodbound. I wonder what secrets do they unlock. I wouldn't be surprised if it allows us to learn more about the person who's after the MC by sending that bloodwraith.

Anyway, I'm still excited for this despite my lack of concrete thoughts on it because it's still too early.

Passport to Romance Chapter 8:

Great, sibling drama between Elliot and William. Not only is their arguing forgettable, but Elliot sounds so entitled. He left his responsibilities on his company to his brother, who also misses their parents. Seriously, what's with this guy? I was initially relieved that he's out of my group to recover, only for him to reappear in the last scene. Oh well. He better behave, though.

So far, this story's just meh. Not too excited for Marisa's birthday, though I'm expecting drama along the way.

Open Heart Chapter 12:

This chapter is emotional, and I love it. First, it stings that the nurses except Danny are no longer nice to the MC. I have my top suspects, but I still think everyone is innocent until proven guilty. That includes Aurora and Landry. There's no reason why I should hate them both.

Did I adopt all three animals? Yup. I'm a sucker for these lovely creatures, and they're already a joy to have with me. The turtle's the one I like the most so far. 

If there's one character in this chapter continually gives an emotional punch, that would be Mrs. Martinez. It was fun and satisfying to steal the needed medication from Declan Nash. I was overjoyed to see Mrs. Martinez getting better and traveling around the world after the hospital held a farewell party for her. Most of all, hearing that she died in her sleep was so painful to hear that it left me shocked and speechless. Even though she went out in a blaze of glory by living out her dream of traveling the world, I still couldn't contain my grief. Even more aggravating was when Harper said that Mrs. Martinez's family is suing Edenbrook, particularly the MC, for malpractice. And let's not forget that Dr. Banerji has a month left to live, yet another point of anxiety.

Ride or Die Chapter 16:

That was a fun showdown to watch. It was fun to see Mona's impressed reaction to the MC outwitting the Brotherhood, them pointing their guns at one another amidst their confusion, Mona taking the bullet for the MC, and Jason getting arrested by the FBI and MC's dad. If there's one thing that I'm annoyed at is that I have to pay diamonds to take Mona to the hospital while the free option is to leave her behind. I'm not upset that Mona gets arrested. I'm upset that the free option doesn't save the cops more time to ensure Mona's recovery, even if she disregards herself.

The graduation may be short, but I'm glad to see Ingrid being friendly towards the MC, and that they'll be attending Langston together. The ending just feels oddly surreal on the MC's uncertainty of her future, though.

Honestly, I'm disappointed but not surprised that RoD will get a second book. The story's overrated and full of clichés and wasted potential. Not to mention that it has one of the most irrational fanbases in the Choices fandom that partly ruined the story for me. A lot of the vocal fans, especially on Instagram, worship it like it's groundbreaking or revolutionary. At least there are some rational fans out there who acknowledge its faults while still enjoying it.

If there are any ways the second book could improve on the first one, I'd say introduce a morally gray setting and execute it better. There are traces of it, though they aren't well done because the narrative depicts the Brotherhood as just evil when their members should be just as varied as the Mercy Park Crew. Same goes for the MPC, since defining them as black or white doesn't work on them.

The Elementalists Chapter 8:

I thought Atlas was gonna die from the MC's attack, but I'm glad he survived and is put under care. I just wish he'll trust his twin and their friends again.

Honestly, I need to keep an eye on Alma. She's still really fishy and may have an ulterior motive for descending on the earth, especially when the MC receives another letter from Kane. Is the MC a plaything or what?

Since I roleplay my MC as a typically curious Air-Att, I picked the premium option to go to the gardens with Beckett so he could have a leg up for a future class with Professor Kontos. A bit miffed that the gardens of Aurelia are recycled, but here's hoping there will be a leg up.

Helping Griffin with his scholarship is kind of fun, and I'm glad I picked the choices that give me scholarship points. Even more so when I chose to help him rather than sabotage Amy. The second option sounds counterproductive, to be honest.

After touching the treasure chest and a vision of Kane's followers, I have a feeling that I'll encounter this hidden group of pranksters at some point in the story, and there might be an option to join them, especially with the letter from Kane. It may also be part of the morality system like many choices before, which leaves me excited.

Thoughts on upcoming stories:

Honestly, the only stories I'm looking forward to are Bloodbound and the new fantasy story. Platinum could surprise me, but I have low expectations of it. The Royal Heir looks like an attempt to milk as much money from die-hard fans as possible, though a part of me misses playing as the MC. BSC's just meh. RCD's an utter mess since the beginning, and any potential it once had is dead and buried since the end of Book 2. Sunkissed and Bachelorette Party just scream forgettable, so not excited for them. This is gonna be one bleak summer.

Court Awards Woman Ownership of Embryo Deemed Property in Acrimonious Divorce

/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/scientist-with-lab-trays-and-pink_4460x4460.jpg In a precedent-setting decision, a Superior Court judge in Sudbury has found that a woman can use a frozen embryo purchased with her husband, while married, despite the man’s objections following their divorce.

What Happened?

The parties were childhood friends who, in 2009, decided to get married and have children. In February 2012, they purchased donated eggs and sperm from a clinic in the U.S. Two viable embryos were created, neither of which were biologically related to either party. One embryo was implanted in the wife soon after it was created. The parties signed several agreements (one with a fertility clinic in Ontario where the embryos were stored and two with clinics in Georgia where the embryos were purchased) outlining what would happen with the embryos in the event of a divorce. In early December 2012, the wife gave birth to a son. By mid-December, the parties separated and an acrimonious divorce process began. The wife filed a motion seeking to use the second embryo that was in storage.

The Parties’ Positions

The Wife

The wife argued that the contract the parties had signed with the Ontario clinic, which stated that the clinic will respect “the patient’s wishes” should be followed in the event of divorce. The contract identified the wife as “the patient”. In addition, the wife further argued that there is no need to balance any competing rights in this case since the husband has no biological connection to the embryo. She also noted that she would not be seeking any child support from him. The wife argued that, moreover, the embryo had particular importance to her as it would be the only real biological family connection that the parties’ son would have. She also noted that time is of the essence since she is 48 and provided a doctor’s letter stating that she is physically capable of carrying a pregnancy to term.

The Husband

The husband argued that the Ontario contract stated that the embryos would be treated as property, and further argued that since had paid for the embryo purchase entirely on his own, the embryo was his property. He also noted that a sibling would not be the in the son’s best interests, since the wife “refuses to be gainfully employed” and the majority of the support for the son would be imposed on the husband.

The Law on Embryo Use in Canada

Justice Del Frate noted that this was a novel issue for the court to consider, stating:

There is no law on point that has considered how to dispose of embryos when neither party has a biological connection to the embryos.

Justice Del Frate did consider an earlier British Columbia decision which involved a dispute over gametes in “sperm straws”. In that case, the court found that the straws were property and they were subsequently divided between the parties. The Family Law Act outlines a comprehensive scheme for equalizing and determining the ownership of marital assets. Section 14(a) of the FLA states that ““the fact that property is held in the name of spouses as joint tenants is proof, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, that the spouses are intended to own the property as joint tenants”. Here, both parties were listed on the relevant contracts and there was a clear intention that they would jointly own the embryos, irrespective of the fact that only the husband had paid for them. While the wife and husband in this dispute did not contest that the remaining embryo be treated as property, the issue was there was only one embryo and it could not be divided as the straws were in the B.C. case. Since it is not possible to simply split the embryo, and the embryo can likewise not be sold with the profits divided between the parties (it is illegal to sell gametes and embryos in Canada), ownership must be determined based on the language in the relevant contracts.

The Contracts in Question

As such, Justice Del Frate placed a great deal of weight on what the couple had agreed to when they signed the contracts with the two fertility clinics, noting that:

In my view, the parties knew what they were agreeing to at the time of signing the agreements. It would be contrary to contract law were I to decide that the wishes of the parties at the time of entering into this contract were other than what they agreed to. One cannot apply buyer’s remorse.

Justice Del Frate noted that both neither party had argued that they had been subject to undue influence, mistake, misrepresentation or anything else that could be used to argue that the agreements were not legally binding. Justice Del Frate noted that in the Ontario contract, the husband and wife had agreed that in the event of a separation or divorce, the clinic would honour “the patient’s wishes” (i.e. that of the wife).  The wife has elected to keep the embryo to attempt another implantation. As such, the judge concluded that the embryo is to be released to the wife. The wife was ordered to pay the husband for his share of value in the embryo (just over $1,400 USD).

Reactions to the Decision

The decision has caught the attention of those in the legal and bioethics fields. Margaret Somerville, a professor of bioethics who spent four decades teaching at McGill University told the National Post that this is an instance of treating a human being like a product or a “things” rather than as a person. She hopes that “…in the future, more senior courts…would say, children are not products to be governed under contract”. Kerry Bowman, a bioethicist at the University of Toronto told CBC News that he wonders whether consent forms are the best way to make decisions in complex, emotional cases involving matters such as this one, noting “true consent from an ethical point of view would be a deep, deep reflection on some of these questions”.
