#taking kseil because i love her regd name#i think of the potty training saga and my only thought was bucket full of piss#youve put in so much work shes grown into such a proper lady

given she's spent most of the last week trying to get the cat to have sex with her, 'a proper lady' seems a bit of a stretch!!

but i do think of the potty training saga and i also think of the 3 months she spent unable to settle between 7-10 pm every night, and i love her even more now

K’seil is 43 lbs, very moderate coat and overall lightly built. Has her tail. She’s easy in the house but typical Aussie on leash (loud and environmentally focused). Very good food and toy drive. Learns fast (pro and con). Dog social with smaller dogs but intimidated by bigger ones. Human social with slow intros.

Yeah it's just, really baffling? His thesis is basically "record masses of whale vocalizations and plug them into a LLM, we'll then be able to fit that against a human language and learn what the whales are saying".

Which 1, I personally would not write a book on a thesis that's still in data collection and doesn't have any results yet.

But 2, my understanding of neural networks & AI is iffy, I just found it really sus that he did not, at ANY POINT, explain how they work. It very much felt like he thinks they're magic spells?

3. I fail to be convinced that you could conclude anything reasonable about vocalization meanings without looking at the resulting behaviors

How to Speak Whale by Tom Mustill

I really wanted this to be good. I really, really wanted to have a good time with this, and there were a handful of fun facts (or "fun" facts), but mostly it was just....fluff.

I spent most of it going "where's the infodumping???" Mustill is clearly passionate about whales, but so much of the book is just...anecdotes and context. It needed to be about 200 pages longer, and at least 5 of those pages needed to be dedicated to what AI is and how he thinks it works. In 2023, he posted an afterword/update and I'm still not convinced he has any idea how neural networks work.

The other 195 should probably be about why the first two hundred pages contain so very little on the actual field of animal communication. Like yes, cetaceans are uniquely challenging, but we can and do study communication analytically--typing this out I just realized how firmly Mustill believes that cetaceans do have human-type language, it permeates the whole book, and this is probably why he doesn't spend any time at all talking about the actual current field of animal communication and how it's analyzed.

Like, my animal communication class was back in 2015 and there were still things in there that did not come up in this book, which is so fucking weird. Did all his cool infodumps get cut in editing or is he a weird ARA? Who knows.

the breeder requires that we keep the kennel name (so when we do start titling it'll be clear Who Made This) but otherwise opened it up to us for names.

i like names that Mean A Thing, and i like the registered name and call name to be different (bc it's funny), but i ALSO like them to refer to each other (bc still funny)

so like. i could've called her [kennel] Bucket, and call name Bucket. there's nothing stopping me. (the breeder would probably find it hilarious.) but i like Name Symbolism so i got nutty about it.
