Tumblr media
When MySpace first hit the scene it was all anyone could talk about. Conversations often involved who were in people’s top eight friends, what song lyrics to use in their profiles — it was the first of its kind on the internet. Everyone in school had one which is how you had ended up with one. At first you had been rather reluctant; the internet seemed like a scary place and putting all your information on there seemed risky but you soon came around. If everyone else was doing it then why shouldn’t you? There had been no expectations when you had finally made your profile. The first few days you had spent making your page pretty, figuring out HTML so you could code it to look better than the rest. It wasn’t until one day a message popped up from a boy you didn’t know when the social media platform became part of your every day life for years to come.
Choi Seunghyun, that was his name.
He was a cute, chubby boy who was into rap. His profile said he was a rapper himself, or trying to be one anyway. His message was simple, sweet even as he complimented the song choice you had placed on your profile. No Diggity by Blackstreet. A classic. Seunghyun seemed to think so too.
That was the start of a beautiful friendship.
Every day, for two years, you talked daily for hours upon hours. Topics would range from music to films then slowly but surely into the deeper stuff. He’d tell you how he was struggling at school, you’d tell him about what was going on in your life — there wasn’t anything you didn’t share with each other. He even told you when he’d started dating this older girl. It had never sat right with you but he seemed so happy so you never said anything. Then, there was the day he told you they’d broken up. He had been so crushed but you? Well, you couldn’t help but feel elated.
Because, by then you’d realised you had a crush on him.
Conversations started to turn a little flirty. Nothing insane - you were still young after all but everytime he said something to you, you couldn’t stop the butterflies swarming in your stomach or how your cheeks would heat up. It was safe to say this boy you had never met was your first love. Neither had spoken it but you were sure he felt the same. He had to. The messages he sent you, the hours he spent talking to you; it had to mean something, right?
Then, it all stopped.
No more messages came from Seunghyun. It had shattered you — your very first heartbreak. At first you couldn’t help but blame yourself. Maybe you had driven him away, maybe he had got fed up. Realistically you knew something must have happened but self doubt was your biggest enemy. It got easier with time, you learned to let him go but you missed him. He had been your best friend, the one person that you could count on and now he was gone.
Life carried on. You studied hard, got yourself a part time job to help pay your college fees, even had a couple of relationships in the few years since Seunghyun had vanished but nothing ever stuck. They never had meaning because whether you realised it or not, you were always wondering about what could have been.
It was one exhausting day after a shift at work when you randomly decided to look at you MySpace. And, there it was. One new message. Your heart caught in your throat, heart pounding wildly as you moved the arrow to click on it.
CHOI SEUNGHYUN
Long time, no see. I know you might be mad at me and that is understandable. I never meant to vanish on you, I beat myself up over it everyday. I miss you and I’d love to explain, if you’ll let me. Would you care to meet up?
For a moment anger boiled up inside you. Did he really think he could show up out of the blue after all these years and think everything would be okay? You moved the mouse to hover over the delete button then really thought about it. This was someone that had meant everything to you, someone that had made your teenage years more bearable. Now you finally had the chance to meet him. So, taking a deep breath, you typed out your reply.
YOU
Mad might be a little bit of an understatement but I’m willing to hear you out. Give me a time and place and I’m there.
It was a warm spring day in Seoul so you’d opted for a light jacket. The weather could be unpredictable so it was always better to be prepared. The sights around you were too beautiful to inflict anything but positivity on you. Seokchan Lake Park was one of your favourite places in the whole of Seoul especially now that it was Cherry Blossom season. The pink leaves swaying in the breeze, the ripples of the lake catching the corner of your eye — it was truly a stunning place to be. This time of year was your favourite. Spring had always been your favourite season because when the cherry blossoms were in full bloom, it seemed to make everything more beautiful, serene even.
Your hands gripped the railing bordering the lake, eyes casting across the water. People were riding the moon boats, couples on dates or friends who wanted to escape the world together for a bit. Maybe one day you’d have someone to ride one with.
“Y/N?” A deep, soothing voice spoke your name causing you to turn around. Eyes scrunched in confusion, head tilted to the side as you looked at the handsome stranger in front of you. He seemed oddly familiar.
“Uh? Who’s asking?” You eyed him curiously.
“Oh shit, wait. Sorry. I never told you that I lost all the weight,” he stumbled over his words, cheeks tinting a slight shade of red. “It’s me. Seunghyun.”
Your eyes narrowed as you took him in, examining every inch of him. Then it hit you. This was the guy from BigBang — the one who did the raps. You weren’t that big of a fan but you’d heard their music and seen their faces on the TV. Your brain began putting two and two together. You gasped loudly, eyes widening once you finally realised.
“Fucking TOP from BigBang are you ki-“ The rest of your sentence was muffled as Seunghyun placed his palm over your mouth to stop you from talking. His eyes darted around, checking to make sure nobody had heard your outburst. He wanted solely to spend this time with you, nobody else.
“Be quiet,” he hissed. “I’m trying to be incognito.”
He removed his hand from your mouth, pleading with his eyes that you’d be calm. You folded your arms over your chest, once again checking him over. He could sense the sceptism but he’d been prepared for this. “The Seunghyun I knew was a cute, chubby boy with the prettiest little dimples.”
He rolled his eyes. “I still have dimples.”
“If you really are my Seunghyun then tell me something only he and I would know.”
The way his heart skipped a beat when you said ‘my Seunghyun’ nearly made him stumble. He didn’t have to think, though. His head was so full of all the memories he had with you. “The day I first messaged you, you had No Diggity on your profile, we talked about how much we both loved the cherry blossoms and how one day we wanted to see them together.”
The moment the words left his mouth, you flung yourself at him, almost knocking him back with the force of it. Your arms wrapped around his neck, his encircling your waist. He had waited for this moment for so long, he wasn’t going to waste a second of it. He held you close, taking in the scent of your hair, the way your body felt against his. It was better than he could’ve ever dreamed of. He wondered if you could feel his heart pounding against his chest or the way his breath caught in his throat when you snuggled into his neck.
“You have so much explaining to do,” you giggled.
“I promise, I’ll tell you everything.”
Seunghyun more than kept his promise. He told you every single thing that had happened. How, when you had first met, he had been the chubby boy in his profile picture but then the trajectory of his life changed. What he hadn’t told you back then was that he had tried to sign with YG, getting turned down because of his weight so he spent months and months losing it to finally get signed. He told you about how his trainee days went, how after a hard day he loved messaging you because it made everything feel better. Then, he got to the part where he stopped talking to you. That had been because BigBang had finally debuted. He didn’t have the time (or more so YG had forbid them all from talking to anyone online). You could see the remorse in his eyes from keeping it all from you, the way you knew the guilt was eating him up. You had told him you understood now even if you had been furious at first. It was like a weight lifted off his shoulder. He felt lighter now. There were no more secrets.
Apart from the unspoken feelings between you.
The day had been spent mostly talking, sitting under the cherry blossoms and catching up. It had been nice, not awkward at all. Something about Seunghyun put you at ease. The kindness in his eyes and the way he spoke to you were nothing short of breathtaking. It was almost unfair that it had taken you this long to meet. You were both adults now, though. You weren’t teenagers anymore.
Currently, you were leaning back against the railings of the lake, finishing the last remainders of the ice cream Seunghyun had kindly bought you.
“Since you told me everything you were hiding, I feel like I should tell you something,” you finished the last bite of the ice cream cone, wiping your hands on your jeans. Seunghyun raised a brow, his own ice cream devoured long ago. He had been leaning over the railings, watching people have their fun on the lake. Now, though, he turned so he could look at you.
“Hmm?” His head tilted to the side slightly, a cheeky grin on his face. “Been hiding your own secrets, I see.”
“Not much of a secret just… didn’t know how to say it,” you started. “I just don’t want to scare you off now that I’ve got you back but I feel like you should know.”
“Hand on my heart,” he placed his hand on his chest right where his heart lay just for dramatics. “…nothing you could say would scare me away.”
Silence fell between you for a few moments before you finally spoke in a soft, rushed tone. “I think… well, I know, you’re my first love.”
Seunghyun froze upon hearing your words. One of his hands gripping the railing as if he needed it to hold himself upright. Had he heard you right? Did you really just say he was your first love? Words failed him, his brain a messy pile of words, none of which he could grasp enough to form. He was like a deer caught in headlights with his wide eyes, the shock of your confession surging through his veins. Those were the last words he had ever expected you to say. The truth was that Seunghyun had always had feelings for you. There had always been hope that one day maybe you could’ve had something but then when BigBang took off, he let you go. Well, he tried to anyway. Now, seeing you standing in front of him, nervously fidgeting with the sleeve of your jacket as you awaited his reply, it brought back all those feelings. They had never gone away. Always there, simmering and waiting for the right moment to boil over.
Just as you were about to tell him to forget it, your heart pounding hard in your chest, Seunghyun moved. Before you knew what was happening, his lips were on yours. They were slow, almost hesitant at first until he felt you kissing him back. He smiled into the kiss, bringing one of his hands up to cup your cheek, the other wrapping around your waist to pull you close against him. His whole body felt like it was on fire, like he needed more of you. Usually he wouldn’t be the one to kiss so out in the open but he had his shot and he was sure as hell going to take it.
“Do you want to come back to my place? You can say no, it’s totally fine,” he breathed, thumb brushing over your cheekbone.
“Yes,” you replied almost instantly, earning the widest smile from Seunghyun that showed off those dimples that you loved so much.
That was how you ended up at Seunghyun’s apartment, laying on top of him, his hand tangled in your hair, lips moving furiously together. The second you’d stepped foot through the door, neither of you had been able to keep your hands off each other.
Your tongues tangled together, a quiet moan from you swallowed by the kiss. You pulled away, sitting up and straddling his lap, hands resting on his chest.
“I… I’ve never done this before,” you admitted shyly. “I mean, I’ve done stuff but I’ve never… gone all the way but, god, I want you. So bad.”
Seunghyun blushed as his hands found your waist, sitting up slightly himself. “Me neither. I…I want to… with you. If you want to. It’s, uh, up to you but… I think I’ve always been waiting for you.”
“Me too,” you said softly, leaning back in to kiss him. “It’s always been you, Seunghyun.”
He flipped you around, gently laying you back on the mattress, his body on top of yours now. His lips were back on you, kissing you like his life depended on it. Your fingers threaded through his hair, causing him to groan into the kiss. He couldn’t help when his hips involuntarily bucked into yours, the delicious friction causing you both to moan.
“Do that again,” you mumbled against his lips.
Happy to oblige, he did it again, hips grinding against yours. You could feel his hard on, pushing against your clothed core. It was nice but it wasn’t enough so you moved your hips in time with his. By now one of Seunghyun’s hands had slid under your shirt, his fingers leaving a trail of goosebumps on your skin in their wake. He broke the kiss for a moment, looking at you with the softest eyes as he asked his question. “Can I take this off?”
“Yes,” you nodded, chest rising and falling in anticipation.
He slowly peeled your shirt off, taking a moment to look at you as you lay there, top half bare minus your bra. He inhaled deeply, trying to keep himself under control. “You’re so beautiful.”
It was impossible to fight the blush creeping up your neck. “Thank you but I think you’re talking about yourself.”
“No,” his lips had found your neck, trailing kisses along your collarbone then the side of your neck. He nipped at your skin, his tongue running across his mark to soothe it. If he was doing this, he was leaving you a reminder… and maybe he wanted everyone else to know that he was the first one to have you. That thought alone filled him with a possessive pride. You tilted your head to the side to give him more access. “You’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid my eyes on. A fuckin’ dream.”
It was your turn to undress him now, tugging at his shirt. Seunghyun took the hint, removing himself from your neck momentarily to pull it off over his head, discarding it somewhere on the floor. He leaned back down again, his fingers dancing along your side until his hand cupped your breast, his thumb brushing over your nipple through the fabric of your bra. You bit your lip at the sensation, Seunghyun reaching behind your back to try and unclasp it. Unfortunately, he wasn’t as smooth as he’d like to be, fumbling with it and failing to unclasp it.
“…is this some torture device or something? What the hell?” He huffed which only caused you to giggle. You sat up, reaching behind your back to take it off yourself. It joined the ever growing pile of clothes on the floor. There was a moment where you almost covered yourself up but seeing how Seunghyun was looking at you — like you were the sun, stars and moon — it gave you the confidence you needed. He felt his cock twitch in his pants, nearly nutting right then and there. He really needed to get a hold of himself if he was ready to cum at seeing your tits. “Holy shit.”
His lips found yours, hungrily moving against them, tongue instantly passing your lips to find yours. His hand cupped your breast, giving it a gentle squeeze. You arched into his touch, spurring him on, giving him the courage he needed to keep going. The pad of his thumb brushed your nipple again, feeling it pebble under his touch. He tore his lips from you, kissing down the valley between your breasts before his lips found your other nipple. His tongue swirled around it, lavishing it with attention while his hand made work of your other one. The sensation was incredible, you could feel yourself getting wetter and wetter with each touch. Embarrassingly wet at this point. He ground his hips back into yours, harder this time. He was so hard, so painfully hard but he wanted to take his time. He wanted this to be a memory both of you could look back on fondly. Your first time had to be special, he would make sure of that even if he was a nervous wreck inside.
“Seunghyun,” you sighed. His lips left your breast, trailing wet kisses down your stomach until he reached the waistband of your jeans. He looked up at you, silently asking you for permission. It took one nod of your head before he was tugging them off. HIs eyes instantly caught the damp patch on your panties, groaning to himself. The fact he had done this to you, that he was the one to make you so riled up? It was an incredible feeling. He lightly pressed his fingers against your core, rubbing in slow circles over your panties.
“Does that feel good?” He asked nervously. All he wanted was to make you feel good, to give you the pleasure you deserved.
“Mhm. I….” You started but cut off, too embarrassed to say what you wanted to.
“No, go on, baby. Tell me.”
“…I want you to touch me properly, please?”
Seunghyun hooked his fingers into the sides of your panties, pulling them off. Now you were completely naked in front of him. He was sure this was a dream. There was no way you were lying here, hair fanned out on the pillow, looking at him with desire in your eyes, bare for him and only him. He parted your legs, his hand trailing up to where you needed him. A long finger slid between your folds, your slick coating it. You were so wet. He kept doing that, sliding his fingers along your pussy before he found your clit. You gasped out when he began to rub slow, soft circles against it. Hearing your breathy moans, the way your hips were moving against his hand; it spurred him on. He added more pressure, sliding his index finger down, teasing your entrance. It was slowly that he slid his finger inside you, eyes instantly flicking up to your face to check your reaction.
Your bottom lip was tugged between your teeth, fingers gripping the bed sheets beneath you. It was truly a sight to behold. He began to pump his finger; the fact you were so wet made it easier for him to pump his finger in and out. “You’re so wet.”
He added another finger, keeping it gentle. He curled his fingers, to which you rewarded him with a loud moan of his name. He couldn’t help himself but seeing your writhing under his touch, the way your eyes were squeezed shut, hips chasing his movements? He needed to taste you. If he was being honest, he’d only ever eaten a girl out once but for you, he’d try his damndest to make it the best experience of your life.
He kept his fingers moving inside you, picking up the pace a little. His head now between your thighs, kissing along your soft skin before finally, finally, he darted his tongue out to taste you. He had to pause immediately, feeling himself almost nutting once again. Yeah, he was definitely a virgin. Couldn’t keep it together at all. Once he got a hold of himself, his tongue went back to work, swirling around your clit. The moan you let out was the most beautiful thing he’d ever heard.
“Fuck, Seunghyun!” You gasped, fingers flew to his dark hair. “I.. oh…that… that feels so good.”
You held his head against you, bucking into his mouth as his lips attached to your sensitive bud, sucking it. And, that was it. The way his fingers were pumping into you paired with his mouth working its magic, it was too much. Too overwhelming. The pressure had built to a crescendo.
“O-Oh, I-fuck…” you cried out, fingers tugging at his hair as you came. Your body tensed up, your release flooding his mouth. He lapped it up like a man starved, his cock aching painfully knowing he’d just made you cum. He slowed his fingers down, helping you through your release. When he felt your body relax, his lips trailed back up your body, pulling his fingers from you. He found your lips again, kissing you slowly.
“Back with me?” He asked softly, brushing your hair from your forehead.
“Yeah.”
“That was so fucking hot. I can’t believe I just made you come like that.”
“I don’t think I’ve ever come that hard before. Let me return the favour.”
Your hand slid between your bodies, dipping into his jeans to palm him through his boxers. He thrust into your hand automatically. He was certain he’d never been this hard in his life. It was too much. He knew he wasn’t going to be able to handle it if you kept touching him. That would have to be saved for another time. As you began to rub his cock through his boxers, his fingers wrapped around your wrist to stop you. You frowned. “Did I do something wrong?”
He cupped your face, shaking his head. “Not at all, baby. I just…. if you keep touching me like that, I’m gonna come and I…” His face turned a deep shade of scarlet. “I… I want to come inside you.”
“Oh,” you understood immediately. “Do you… have any condoms?”
He sighed heavily. “No.”
“I’m on the pill so we should be okay.”
Seunghyun nodded. He stood up for a minute, shedding himself of his jeans and boxers. You hadnleaned up on your elbows to watch, the throbbing between your legs ever present as you watched him undress. Seeing his cock, the way it sprang out made you lick your lips. Yeah, you definitely needed that in your mouth one day soon. You hadn’t missed how hard he was, the precum leaking from his tip.
Seunghyun crawled back on top of you, his heart now pounding in his chest. Nerves were setting in. You were really about to do this. He was about to lose his virginity to the girl he’d always dreamed about. It didn’t feel real. So many things had gone wrong in his life but this? This was right.
You cupped his cheek, the nerves in his eyes reflecting back in yours. It was scary but you trusted him. Seunghyun would take care of you, that was something you knew for sure. He rocked his hips against you, his cock sliding through your drenched folds. A whimper escaped your kiss swollen lips. By now, it was the point of no return but you had to ask anyway, had to be certain. “Are you sure?”
“Never been more sure in my life. Are you?” He kissed the palm of your hand.
“I…I’m nervous but I want this. I want you.”
“And I want you. I’ve always wanted you. I promise I’ll be so gentle and… if it hurts or you need me to stop then I will instantly, okay?”
You nodded. Seunghyun took one of your hands in his, lacing your fingers together. His other hand had taken his cock, running it along your folds on more time to coat himself in your slick before positioning at your entrance. “I’m gonna start now.”
He very, very slowly pushed the head of his cock into your soaking entrance. He groaned at the sensation, your pussy warm as it enveloped his length, trying to accommodate him. He pushed in a little further but immediately stopped when he heard the sharp gasp tearing from your lips. Eyes wide, he looked up in a panic. “Are you okay?”
You nodded. “Yeah. Just… stings. Give me a minute.” He did, he waited patiently even if it was the hardest thing he’d ever done. His lips covered your face in sweet kisses, his free hand running up and down your side to soothe you. When you opened your eyes, you nodded, a fierce determination in them. “Keep going.”
He pushed in even more. Little by little he kept it up, watching your face for any signs of discomfort. The way you were squeezing his hand made his heart clench. He knew it would hurt for a little moment for you, but he hated the thought of it. Finally, he was all the way inside. Stilling completely.
“Holy shit. You feel so good,” he breathed, his deep voice full of barely constrained desire. “So tight. I… I’m not going to last long, baby. Tell me when I can move.”
It was a foreign feeling, strange but not in a bad way. It was overwhelming, the feeling of being so full as your body tried to accommodate the new intrusion. The initial sting had started to fade now. The hard part was over with. Your eyes met Seunghyun’s and you could see how much he was holding back but he hadn’t complained one bit. His eyes shone with nothing but love and patience for you. “You can move. Please.”
He inhaled a breath, pulling out only halfway before gently pushing back in. He set a slow rhythm, it was clunky and awkward but neither of you cared. He buried his head in the crook of your neck as he thrust into you. The more he did, the better it felt. You could feel how good it felt, needing more of it. So, feeling brave, you wrapped one leg around his waist which pulled him in deeper. He moved a little harder, spurred on by your moans in his ear. His head lifted, hand squeezing yours, his forehead resting against yours. “I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
That was all it took for Seunghyun to lose it. A deep groan fell from his lips as he rutted into you. He thrust in to the hilt, the tip of his cock hitting that special spot inside you which triggered another orgasm from you. The feeling of your tight walls clamping around him like a vice was it. He groaned loudly, your name on his lips as he emptied himself inside you. It was a beautiful sight. His hair stuck to his forehead, damp from sweat, his face contorted in pleasure. It was something you would never forget. He collapsed on top of you, careful not to crush you with his weight.
He nuzzled his head into your neck as you ran your fingers through his hair, both of you panting to get your breaths back.
Silence enveloped you. Both of you basking in what you’d just shared together. Eventually, Seunghyun pulled his head back up. “I meant it, you know? I love you. I didn’t get to say it earlier but you’re my first love, too.”
The intimate moment you’d just shared, giving yourselves to each other paired with his beautiful words brought tears to your eyes. “I love you, too. I’ve always loved you and I’m always going to.”
No matter what happened now, you knew that as long as you had each other, things would be okay.
He was yours and you were his. In every way possible.

Welp, I've been using external methods of auto-backing up my tumblr but it seems like it doesn't do static pages, only posts.
So I guess I'll have some manual backing up to do later
Still, it's better than nothing and I'm using the official tumblr backup process for my smaller blogs so hopefully that'll net the static pages and direct messages too. But. My main - starstruckpurpledragon - 'backed up' officially but was undownloadable; either it failed or it'd download a broken, unusable, 'empty' zip. So *shrugs* I'm sure I'm not the only one who is trying to back up everything at once. Wouldn't be shocked if the rest of the backups are borked too when I try to download their zips.
There are two diff ways I've been externally backing up my tumblr.
TumblThree - This one is relatively straight forward in that you can download it and start backing up immediately. It's not pretty, but it gets the job done. Does not get static pages or your direct message conversations, but your posts, gifs, jpegs, etc are all there. You can back up more than just your own blog(s) if you want to as well.
That said, it dumps all your posts into one of three text files which makes them hard to find. That's why I say it's 'not pretty'. It does have a lot of options in there that are useful for tweaking your download experience and it's not bad for if you're unfamiliar with command line solutions and don't have an interest in learning them. (Which is fair, command line can be annoying if you're not used to it.) There are options for converting the output into nicer html files for each post but I haven't tried them and I suspect they require command line anyway.
I got my blogs backed up using this method as of yesterday but wasn't thrilled with the output. Decided that hey, I'm a software engineer, command line doesn't scare me, I'll try this back up thing another way. Leading to today's successful adventures with:
TumblrUtils - This one does take more work to set up but once it's working it'll back up all your posts in pretty html files by default. It does take some additional doing for video/audio but so does TumblThree so I'll probably look into it more later.
First, you have to download and install python. I promise, the code snake isn't dangerous, it's an incredibly useful scripting language. If you have an interest in learning computer languages, it's not a bad one to know. Installing python should go pretty fast and when it's completed, you'll now be able to run python scripts from the command line/terminal.
Next, you'll want to actually download the TumblrUtils zip file and unzip that somewhere. I stuck mine on an external drive, but basically put it where you've got space and can access it easily.
You'll want to open up the tumblr_backup.py file with a text editor and find line 105, which should look like: ''' API_KEY = '' '''
So here's the hard part. Getting a key to stick in there. Go to the tumblr apps page to 'register' an application - which is the fancy way of saying request an API. Hit the register an application button and, oh joy. A form. With required fields. *sigh* All the url fields can be the same url. It just needs to be a valid one. Ostensibly something that interfaces with tumblr fairly nicely. I have an old wordpress blog, so I used it. The rest of the fields should be pretty self explanatory. Only fill in the required ones. It should be approved instantly if everything is filled in right.
And maybe I'll start figuring out wordpress integration if tumblr doesn't die this year, that'd be interesting. *shrug* I've got too many projects to start a new one now, but I like learning things for the sake of learning them sometimes. So it's on my maybe to do list now.
Anywho, all goes well, you should now have an 'OAuth Consumer Key' which is the API key you want. Copy that, put in between the empty single quotes in the python script, and hit save.
Command line time!
It's fairly simple to do. Open your command line (or terminal), navigate to where the script lives, and then run: ''' tumblr_backup.py <blog_name_here> '''
You can also include options before the blog name but after the script filename if you want to get fancy about things. But just let it sit there running until it backs the whole blog up. It can also handle multiple blogs at once if you want. Big blogs will take hours, small blogs will take a few minutes. Which is about on par with TumblThree too, tbh.
The final result is pretty. Individual html files for every post (backdated to the original post date) and anything you reblogged, theme information, a shiny index file organizing everything. It's really quite nice to dig through. Much like TumbleThree, it does not seem to grab direct message conversations or static pages (non-posts) but again it's better than nothing.
And you can back up other blogs too, so if there are fandom blogs you follow and don't want to lose or friends whose blogs you'd like to hang on to for your own re-reading purposes, that's doable with either of these backup options.
I've backed up basically everything all over again today using this method (my main is still backing up, slow going) and it does appear to take less memory than official backups do. So that's a plus.
Anyway, this was me tossing my hat into the 'how to back up your tumblr' ring. Hope it's useful. :D

Tumblr media
From here: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1534024357957230594.html
Classic "rules for thee but not for me" behavior along with a "I don't know how to explain to you that you should care about other people" vibe.
Putting the rest under a cut, because this gets long...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And in text form:
This is a thread on Republican messaging. The press doesn’t want to have a direct conversation with you about this. So as a former Republican who is now a consistent Democratic voter, I will. Thread.
Here is the Republican message on everything of importance: 1. They can tell people what to do. 2. You cannot tell them what to do. This often gets mistaken for hypocrisy, there’s an additional layer of complexity to this (later in the thread), but this is the basic formula.
You've watched the Republican Party champion the idea of "freedom" while you have also watched the same party openly assault various freedoms, like the freedom to vote, freedom to choose, freedom to marry who you want and so on.
If this has been a source of confusion, then your assessments of what Republicans mean by “freedom” were likely too generous. Here’s what they mean: 1. The freedom to tell people what to do. 2. Freedom from being told what to do.
When Republicans talk about valuing “freedom”, they’re speaking of it in the sense that only people like them should ultimately possess it.
So with this in mind, let’s examine some of our political issues with an emphasis on who is telling who what to do. And hopefully there will be no ambiguity about what the Republican Party message is ever again.
Let’s start with the COVID-19 pandemic. We were told by experts in infectious diseases that to control the spread of the pandemic, we had to socially distance, mask, and get vaccinated. So, in a general sense, we were being told what to do. Guess who had a big problem with that.
All Republicans saw were certain people trying to tell them what to do, which was enough of a reason to make it their chief priority to insist that they will not be told what to do. Even though what they were told to do could save lives, including their own.
As you can see, this is a very stunning commitment to refusing to be told what to do. So much so that it is not in fact “pro-life.” But Republicans will nevertheless claim to be the “pro-life” party. That is because they recognize “pro-life” can be used to tell people what to do.
The reason they say they are “pro-life” when they are trying to tell women what to do with their bodies is not out of genuine concern for human life, but because they recognize that in this position, they can tell women what to do with their bodies.
That’s why when you use that same appeal—“pro-life”—when you ask Republicans to do something about gun violence in schools, it doesn’t work. Because you are now in the position of telling Republicans what to do. That’s precisely why they don’t want to do anything about it.
Anyway, gun violence in schools is not a problem, but their children having to wear masks in schools is. Because somebody is telling their children what to do. Dead children don’t bother them, but telling their children what to do? Only *they* should do that.
They claim to be for “small government”, but that really means a government that tells them what to do should be as small as possible. But when the Republican Party recognizes it has an opportunity to tell people what to do, the government required for that tends to be large.
The reason Republicans are so focused on the border isn’t because they care about border security, it’s because they recognize it as the most glaring example of when they can tell other people what to do. That's why it’s their favorite issue. You want in? Too bad. Get out.
If Republicans could do this in every social space—tell the people who aren’t like them too bad, get the fuck out—I’m here to assure that would be something resembling their ideal society.
Now, there are economic policies that we’ve proposed that we can demonstrate would be of obvious benefit to even Republican voters. So how do Republicans leaders kill potential support for these policies? Make the issue about who is telling who what to do.
They focus on the fact that Democrats may raise taxes. Even when it’s painfully obvious that Democrats aren’t going to raise taxes on everyone (or on very few people), what’s important here is that Democrats are the people telling certain people what to do.
If you want to know why Republicans can easily be talked out of proposals from the Democratic Party that are shown to be of benefit to them, it is precisely because they have to entertain the idea of Democrats telling certain people what to do.
What you didn’t understand from the very beginning is that Democrats should not ultimately be in the position to tell anyone what to do. Only Republicans should be in the position to tell people what to do.
On the issue of climate change, a lot of them don’t regard it as a serious issue to the extent that they think it is a hoax. This is because when you tell Republicans to do something for the sake of the planet, you are still ultimately telling them to what to do.
Furthermore, you are conceiving the planet as a thing that all human beings should have to share. I am here to assure you that the GOP’s main concern with the planet is to ensure that they don’t have to share it.
Now here’s where things get interesting: when you explain to Republicans you want them to do something and explain it’s on the basis of benefitting other people. Now you have really crossed a line. Not only did you tell them what to do, you told them to consider others.
The whole point of an arrangement where you can tell people what to do, but you can’t be told what to do, is precisely to avoid having to consider others. This is why this is their ideal arrangement: so they don’t have to do that.
As you can see, this is a very toxic relationship with the idea of who can tell who what to do. So much so that it seems like the entire point is to conceive of a “right” kind of people who can tell other people what to do without being told what to do. Yep, that’s the point.
So let’s add one more component to the system for who tells who what to do: 1. There are “right” human beings and there are "wrong" ones. 2. The “right” ones get to tell the “wrong” ones what to do. 3. The “wrong” ones do not tell the “right” ones what to do.
As you can see, I've just been talking about white male supremacy and the accompanying caste system structure it enforces all along. And I'm talking about this because the message of the Republican Party is that they quite like it.
But I realize that we are operating in an environment where white male supremacy is so entrenched that the press can’t even conceive of the Republican Party’s agenda of sorting the “right” human beings from the “wrong” ones as maybe presenting a “messaging problem.”
This is because the press has chosen to accommodate the Republican Party in a very specific way: 1. It normalizes the Republican agenda. 2. It normalizes framing the responsibility for stopping that agenda as ultimately being on Democrats.
Think about it: white supremacy is not allowed to be viewed as a “messaging problem.” Even when it’s a threat to democracy. Because if it’s a “messaging problem”, to Republicans, that sounds you're telling them that's a problem they have to solve.
Anyway, I made this thread mostly because I realize that the press has a "messaging problem." Namely, in the sense that they seem extremely averse to explicitly identifying the message of the Republican Party. It's called white male supremacy. Thanks for reading.

@sideguitars , i decided to export my blog. in case you were curious, i thought i'd summarize my experience with it.
i have just under 3,000 posts. it took about 5 hours to export. it was 50gbs in total. took about 2 hours to download.
but here's the thing. it makes each post an .html page, in order from first to last. now this folder, for me, is 15MB in size. 15MB!
the large folder, the one that makes it close to 50gb is a folder of the full size HQ files/gifs/videos. anything you've ever reblogged/posted. which i didn't really need. so didn't save that.
and it also saves all message conversations you've ever had. even if you've deleted them. saves them from the very first message. which was actually super sweet to find out. those are saved in .html as well and for me amount to.... 1MB. yup. 1.
so my whole blog only takes up like under 20MB of space. i wish they gave the option to just download that instead of all the HQ stuff.
also, after you click export you don't have to stay on the page or anything, you'll get an email when it's ready. kind of a set it and forget it.
under the cut is a sample of the .html pages of two posts and how they're presented. the media is not clickable to make it bigger. it's embedded on the page. low def all the way, but not bad for under 20MB.
oh, it also saves whatever was in the drafts at the time of exporting.

(the gifset above does move in the .html file! this was a screenshot, so.)

FOR PEOPLE AT RISK OF GETTING BANNED!!!
Reminder that you have a littol button in the web browser to backup your blog!! If you feel you're at risk of getting kicked from the site, use that funky button!!
Tumblr media
Stated on the relevant page:
You can export all of the content you’ve created for your blog, and we’ll package it up into a convenient ZIP file for you to download. When your blog’s content is finished collecting, the processing message will be replaced with a “Download backup” button. Click this button to download a ZIP file of your blog’s exported contents. Underneath the "Download backup" button, you will also see another "Export [blog name]” button for generating a new blog export. You will also receive an email from Tumblr, notifying you that the backup has been completed. If you're exporting a group blog, please note that only Admins will be notified of its completion. If you want to export the contents of more than one of your blogs, you'll need to initiate this process separately for each blog. Your blog export may include: - A Posts folder, with an HTML file for each post (this includes reblogs, drafts, private posts, flagged posts, and any other hidden posts). - A Media folder, with the media from your posts, plus any media you’ve uploaded (like in messaging). These files will be in the format you uploaded them in (JPG, GIF, PNG, MP4, and so on). - A representation of your blog’s messaging conversations, in HTML format. - A representation of your blog’s posts, also in HTML format. Your blog export won't include: - Liked Posts. Note that your backup may take some time to process. Check back on your blog's settings page periodically to see if it has completed. It's not currently possible to import content from other platforms into Tumblr blogs, or to import content from one Tumblr blog to another.
Summary:
If you go to your blog settings you can export your blog (you have do to this seperately for each blog you own).
You will recieve an email notification notifying you of your export (only admins are notified on group blogs).
Your export is a ZIP file you will be able to download. It will NOT include Liked Posts but WILL contain the following:
Posts Folder: HTML files for reblogs, drafts, private posts, flagged posts, and any other hidden posts.
Media Folder: Any media you've uploaded (including within messages) as the format uploaded. JPG, GIF, PNG, MP4, etc.
Messages represented in the HTML format.
Blog Posts represented in the HTML format.
You will not be able to import this to a new blog, but it's better than nothing.

what was tumblr like 9 years ago
god idk how to describe it. I'm not sure how much of my perception of tumblr 9 years ago is affected by me being 13/14 at the time, how much of it was the fandoms I was in, and how much was indicative of tumblr at large, but I'll try to describe it
the like. overall tone of the site was different? you know how people look back on old tumblr posts and cringe? these were the days where those posts were shared unironically. a good example is the shoelaces pose, that was enjoyed entirely unironically. tbh I've watched tumblr's tone shift a lot over the years, going from unabashed cringe, to being deeply embarrassed by those times, to being jaded/disaffected/cynical, to trying to reclaim the cringe era. again, that might be affected by who I've been following, but that's just the vibe I've gotten from the kinds of posts/blogs that get popular
the way people used the site has changed too! some of this is because of features being added and taken away. the messages function wasn't added until 2015, and before that, people talked to each other through the fanmail feature, which has since been removed. it was kind of like asks I guess? you'd send a message directly into someone's inbox. it was like sending letters lol people would also carry on conversations in the reblogs of a post. it was not uncommon to see a post a mile long where two people were just having a public conversation. it was harder to reply to replies too
also, ask games and especially ask blogs were really popular. ask blogs seem to have kind of died out, so in case that's unfamiliar, they were blogs themed around a character (or sometimes a collection of characters, like a particular friend group, or even the whole cast of characters if the blogrunner was ambitious enough) and people would send in asks that the blog would respond to in character, usually accompanied by art. I really loved ask blogs lol I miss them
oh also people really took pride in their blog themes. it makes me sad to see tumblr actively trying to kill this function by making it so that clicking on someone's blog opens them as a tumblr(.)com/url popup that just looks like the mobile blog theme. it used to be the default that it would open as a new page, url(.)tumblr(.)com, and you could customize the hell out of how it looked. people used to take great pride in customizing their blog themes, updating them occasionally, fucking with the html to get new features, some would even add playlists to their blog. baked into this too was the "pages" function, where you could have other pages on your blog, like an about page or whatever. now everyone uses carrd I guess. I miss blog customization and the pages </3

Choosing the Right Shopify Theme for Your Online Store: A Complete Guide
Tumblr media
Selecting the right theme is crucial to the success of your Shopify store. It sets the tone for your brand, influences user experience, and plays a vital role in converting visitors into customers.
Why Shopify Themes Matter
Shopify offers an extensive marketplace of themes, both free and paid. Each theme comes with its unique layout, customization options, and features. The theme you select dictates the overall look and feel of your store. A well-designed theme can:
Boost Engagement: Visual appeal is one of the first things customers notice. A clean, intuitive design keeps visitors on your site longer, reducing bounce rates.
Enhance User Experience: A theme that’s easy to navigate makes the shopping process smoother for customers, improving overall satisfaction.
Increase Conversions: With optimized layouts and responsive designs, the right theme can lead to higher sales.
Improve SEO Performance: A theme optimized for mobile devices, fast loading times, and clear navigation structures will positively impact your store’s search engine rankings.
Features to Look for in a Shopify Theme
Tumblr media
When choosing a theme, it’s essential to look beyond the aesthetic. Here are some key features to consider:
1. Responsive Design
Your customers may be shopping from a variety of devices, from desktop computers to smartphones. A responsive design ensures that your store looks great and functions seamlessly across all devices. This is also a crucial factor for SEO, as Google prioritizes mobile-friendly websites in its search results.
2. Customizability
No two stores are the same, and neither should their themes be. Look for themes that offer extensive customization options. This allows you to tailor the design, colors, fonts, and layout to align with your brand.
3. Fast Loading Time
Site speed is critical for user experience and SEO. A slow-loading site frustrates visitors and drives them away. Make sure the theme you choose is optimized for performance to keep users engaged and improve conversion rates.
4. Integration with Apps
Your Shopify store likely uses various apps to enhance functionality. From marketing automation to customer support tools, a good theme should integrate smoothly with Shopify’s vast ecosystem of apps, providing a cohesive experience.
5. Support and Updates
Themes should be regularly updated to keep up with platform changes and security improvements. Ensure that your theme developer provides ongoing support and updates, so your store remains functional and secure.
6. SEO Optimization
Many Shopify themes come with built-in SEO features, including clean HTML coding, fast page load times, and mobile-friendliness. These features are vital for improving your store’s visibility on search engines.
Free vs. Paid Shopify Themes
One major decision when choosing a theme is whether to go for a free or paid option. Here’s a quick comparison:
Free Themes: Shopify’s free themes are simple, clean, and functional. They’re great for beginners or those on a budget. However, they usually offer limited customization and features.
Paid Themes: Premium themes come with more advanced features, extensive customization options, and higher-quality design. They are typically more optimized for performance and SEO. The investment in a paid theme can significantly impact your store's success by providing a polished, professional appearance and better user experience.
How to Choose the Right Shopify Theme for Your Business
Choosing a theme can be overwhelming with so many options available. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you narrow down the right one for your business:
Understand Your Niche: Your store's theme should reflect your niche. For example, a minimalist theme works well for a luxury fashion store, while a vibrant and playful theme might suit a kids' toy store.
Consider Your Branding: Make sure the theme aligns with your brand colors, fonts, and messaging.
Check Reviews: Always read reviews before purchasing a theme. Look for feedback on the theme’s performance, ease of customization, and support.
Preview the Theme: Most Shopify themes allow you to preview your store’s design before committing. This helps you get a real-time feel of how the theme would look with your products.
Test Responsiveness: Check how the theme appears across different devices to ensure a seamless shopping experience for your customers.

It begins...... (Chipspeech archive update)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oughh web design is not my forte as you can probably tell. But hey I'm onto the HTML part at least. I copied everything from the social media sites onto a Google doc first (for ease of access) and it's 328 pages long at size 6 font.
I'm planning to include everything from characters' Twitter and Tumblr pages, is there any other site that I need to worry about? Besides the Discord. I doubt it's open for new members and even if it is I am not wading through years of random conversations for a few messages. I might include stuff from old screenshots posted in the Chipspeech tag but besides that no.
I wish I could give an estimated completion date but due to classes starting in roughly two weeks idk if I can. The ideal completion date is of course still before they start, which is probably doable (but no promises). Either way It'll be done as soon as possible.

Blogging and digital learning
Blogging refers to writing, photography, and other media that's self-published online. Blogging started as an opportunity for individuals to write diary-style entries, but it has since been incorporated into websites for many businesses. The hallmarks of blogging include frequent updates, informal language, and opportunities for readers to engage and start a conversation.
What Is Blogging?
The word blog is actually a shortened form of its original name, "weblog." These weblogs allowed early internet users to "log" the details of their day in diary-style entries. Blogs often allow readers to comment, so as they became more common, communities sprung up around popular blogs.
If you want to create your online presence and share content you are passionate about, blogging can be a lucrative career choice. In this article, we answer, “What is blogging?”, explore its advantages, understand how you can start blogging and make money from it and share some tips for running a successful blog.
How Blogging Works
Blogging is as simple as obtaining a website and publishing original content on it. Tech-savvy bloggers can buy a domain name and build the website themselves. Those with less HTML knowledge can create an account with sites like WordPress that simplify the web design and publishing process.
Blogs are usually simple websites. Older pieces may be archived in separate sections of the site, and there may be a separate page with contact info or a bio, but the blog itself is usually just a single page that can be scrolled through—similar to the news feed on social media sites like Facebook. As with a Facebook news feed, a blog displays the newest content at the top of the page.
Pros and Cons of Blogging
Pros
Good for SEO
Maintains communication with customers
Builds rapport with customers
Generate alternate income
Cons
Time-consuming
Constantly requires fresh ideas
Payoff is delayed
Blogging in and of itself won't generate income
Requirements for a Blog
The good news is that starting a blog or adding a blog to your existing site is relativity easy and affordable. All you have to do is follow these four steps.
Set Up the Blog
There are free blog options such as WordPress and Blogger, but to retain control and a professional image, consider investing in a domain name and a hosting service. You can install WordPress or another content management system on your host if you don't want to create the whole site from scratch.
Add Content
Once your blog is up and running, you need to keep it active with new content to grow your business. Develop a set schedule for writing and posting blog articles. Create a content calendar so you always know what you're going to post.
Market
Like all other business ideas, your success comes from marketing and getting your message in front of your target market. Great ways to reach your market are through social media apps, email lists, and by reaching out to other bloggers, podcasters, and media outlets for publicity. Repurpose your blog content to promote your business across platforms, such as by using quotes on your Twitter or Instagram profiles, or by creating a video of your article to share on YouTube.
Add Income Streams
While your blog can complement an existing business, it's also a great way to add additional income streams to your home business. You can promote other companies' products and services in affiliate marketing. You can advertise or feed ad networks, such as AdSense, on to your blog. If you have a service business you're promoting with your blog, you can create your own information products to complement it. Or, if you have your own product, you can offer a service.

Understanding Email Marketing
Before we delve into the role of an Email Marketing Executive, let's establish a clear understanding of email marketing itself. Email marketing is a targeted approach that involves sending relevant and personalized messages to a specific group of recipients through email. It serves as a direct communication channel between businesses and their audience, enabling them to share promotions, news, updates, and valuable content.
Key Responsibilities of an Email Marketing Executive
1. Campaign Strategy Development (H1)
At the core of an Email Marketing Executive's responsibilities lies the strategic development of campaigns. They meticulously plan the entire campaign lifecycle, from conceptualization to execution. How to archive a Discord channel
I'm going to say this way ahead of time: this is going to be waaaaaaay more of an annoying process than it should be. Discord should allow exporting the channel history to server owners, without the need of doing all this. I won't blame you if you give up.
Get the DiscordChatExporter application to download the chat history
This program has two versions
one that has a graphical interface, but works on Windows only
one that has a command line interface, but works on Windows, Linux and macOS
This guide covers the first. The second one maybe next time, in another post. The second version also makes it easier to download every channel on the server.
Step 1: Go to here, and download the latest version in the zip file named DiscordChatExporter.zip
Tumblr media
Step 2: Unpack the zip file
Tumblr media
Step 3: Run DiscordChatExporter.exe
Tumblr media
Step 4: Dismiss the scary looking warning as this will show up for any program that which developer can't afford paying $629 a year.
Tumblr media
Step 5: Close the welcoming message and you'll see the application interface:
Tumblr media
Prepare an access token. Do not share it to anyone else - treat it the same way as you treat your password.
There are two ways to do it:
Approach 1: use your own access token, will work with any channel you're able to access, including Direct Messages, but it is a violation of Discord Terms of Service, and therefore your Discord account could get banned for it. Use at your own risk.
Follow the instructions here, which are fairly detailed step-by-step instructions for Chrome, Firefox, and also the desktop app. I'm gonna expand more on approach 2 as I had to figure it out myself, and the current instructions for approach 2 are not really adequate enough. If you go with approach 1, skip down the entire section below, until the "Paste the token in the Token textbox and click the arrow button" section.
Approach 2: create a bot account, invite it to your server, and use its access token. This process assumes you have enough privileges to invite bots to the server ("Manage Server" permission), and therefore, but is also 100% okay as far as Discord's Terms of Service are concerned. It is also generally safer, as accidental leaking of the token will not risk you losing your user account.
Step 1: Go to the Discord developer portal.
Step 2: Create a new application by clicking the "New Application" button
Tumblr media
Step 3: Name it however you want, I personally named it "mlemgrab". Agree to the scary sounding long ass terms of service.
Tumblr media
Step 4: Go to the Bot section, scroll down to the "Privileged Gateway Intents"
Tumblr media
Step 5: Enable the "Message Content Intent". We don't have to worry about the "if your bot is in more than 100 servers" part because our bot will never be in this many servers.
Step 6: Save changes by pressing the green button "Save Changes"
Tumblr media
Step 7: Go to "OAuth2" followed by "URL Generator"
Tumblr media
Step 8: Select the "bot" scope and then "Read Messages/View Channels" and "Read Message History" permissions
Tumblr media
Step 9: Copy the link at the bottom and visit it:
Tumblr media
Step 10: Press "Continue", and approve the required permissions by clicking Authorize. Once you do it, the bot account is on the server.
Tumblr media
Step 11: Go to "Bot" and click the "Reset Token" button to get the token that will allow you to act (in our case, getting all the messages) using the bot user. If you lose that token, you can click reset again to get a new one.
Tumblr media
Paste the token in the Token textbox and click the arrow button
Tumblr media
Select the server, and then the channel you want to archive
Tumblr media
Click the download button on the bottom right
Tumblr media
Select where you want to save it, and the format. HTML is good for easy browsing and preview in a web browser, JSON is good for further processing (let's say someone else later writes a program for importing the conversation elsewhere).
For archivization purposes I recommend saving in both HTML and JSON.
Click "More" for more options.
Tumblr media
By default the program will not download any message attachments nor avatars or emotes. If you want that, select "Download assets" option. Preferably while also selecting the "Reuse assets" option and selecting a single directory for assets if you want to archive multiple channels.
You can also select the specific time range and using the partition limit - split the archive into several files each containing N messages.
Press Export. Wait. The progress bar will move very slowly.
Tumblr media
Once it is done, you should be able to open the HTML file with your web browser.
Treat anything on Discord as media that will be lost
Do not use Discord to host your files. Do not rely on Discord to preserve your text. DO NOT RELY ON DISCORD FOR ANY KIND OF PRESERVATION OR HOSTING!!
It CAN be lost, it WILL be lost! You must consider Discord as a part of the Core Internet, controlled by one company that hosts the servers.
I thought it was impressive at first that it replaced IRC, but now I am horrified. If the company behind Discord went under today, how many friends would you lose?
How many relationships? How much writing?
You may think this won't happen, but I remember when AIM went down and along with it, entire novels worth of interaction with my oldest friend.
IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU. IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. NO COMPANY IS INFALLIBLE.
Back up your files! Download anything you've saved to Discord NOW, before the API changes go into effect! And DO NOT RELY ON THEM FOR HOLDING IMPORTANT FILES!
