‼️SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT‼️

Me and @emo-dandelion ‘s Kirby fanfiction now has an official prologue!

The fanfic, titled Cor Caroli after the stars, is mainly a Marxolor story! It tells of Marx and Magolor’s origins, how they met, and how their lives are going, while we also reveal the stories of our OCs and how they fit in with the canon!

Much of the inspiration for our writing came from @desultory-novice ‘s fan comic Marionettes’ Pavane, which I have to admit is probably my favorite Kirby fanfiction that I’ve read! My friends and I are big fans! The comic got me into Marxolor, and inspired me to finally share my ideas with the world! Thank you to anyone who is willing to read our gay trauma fest, we appreciate it. :)

The fanfiction will be posted on AO3 under the author name be_gay_docrime. Sometime soon, we will post links on our blogs for anyone who needs to use them!

We’ll have more udpates as we continue working on it. We will post lots of information (and propaganda) on Tumblr, so keep a lookout if you’re interested!

4. Virgo - contains my good friend Spica the star (beginning to see a pattern yes? It’s a binary system)

3. Orion - highly visible and recognizable even in my light polluted New York (on a good day I’ve seen him twice now). He also has one of my favorite stars Rigel which has two companion stars. A trinary if you will. I’m not an astrophysicist but maybe it caught a binary system in its massive gravity 😳 (this blue supergiant didn’t do any fumbling XD)

2. Canis Major - my friend Sirius Dogsbody (you guessed it a binary system)

cairn's hollow makes me so crazy like there is noo future. generations do not march onward. the teens want out. casper is the only party member from the hollow and each generation of the cor carolis had one fewer child than the last. a slow dwindling of body mass and capital-- the existential threat is coming from inside the house!-- and casper is going to end the line. mwah. c'est fini. the hollow is incompatible with human life and new forms of being are trying to find their niche :) so to me there is this delicious irony that victrans are soo obsessed with the empire's little origin myth.... its imperial-cosmogony-by-martyrdom.... when really they should be talking eschatology 😝 because that shit is doomed. victra delenda est!

OKAY SO

"Retired" may not be the BEST word for them because most of them were not "official" constellations in the first place (Constellation 101: They're basically maps. Because they're fairly easy to spot; they're used to catalog and designate and find other celestial bodies like nebulae, clusters, galaxies, etc) which is why the 88 "official" ones exist. Those are the 88 we use to tell Where Stuff Is In The Sky. Pretty cool!

But what are the retired ones, then? Well, they're more or less star pictures (the OTHER function of constellations: storytelling devices and pictures!) that were cataloged somewhere at some point and then either fell out of usage, had stars that were already designated by another constellation, or were too large or too small or too obscure to be of use in mapping. Or some still exist, but are now recognized under different names.

And there's a whole BUNCH of these. A long time ago pretty much anyone with time on their hands could make up a constellation and write it down somewhere and people would accept it as true. You can still do this today, just for fun, even if it won't get used to map! But some fun ones of old include:

Apis - "The Bee" Still exists! But now it's known as Musca, "The Fly." Possibly so as not to get confused with the Beehive cluster.

Asselli and Praesepe - "Dionysus' Asses" as in donkeys, of course, but still. You'd think the reasoning behind retiring this one would be obvious, but considering Uranus and Bootes are still up there, who knows.

Bufo - "The Toad"

Cor Caroli Regis Martyris - "Charles' Heart" as in King Charles I of England. An ass-kissing attempt that later got wiped from the records. Still funny, though.

Felis - "The Cat" funnily we have about four dogs but no official cat constellation! Although two lions and a lynx, I guess that's something.

Globus Aerostaticus - "The Hot-Air Balloon"

Dentalium - "The Tooth"

Tigris - "The Tigris" as in the river. There's already a river constellation though, Eridanus. Also, not having it be a tiger is just a TEASE

Rangifer - "The Reindeer" Merry Christmas. Funnily this one was actually visible in summer

Turdus Solitarius - "The Thrush," apparently also called the mockingbird. I don't THINK they nixed this one cause it had "turd" in the name, but it's an idea.

Urna - "The Urn;" this one's still around in a sense. But it's now part of Aquarius instead of being its own thing.

Manis - "The Pangolin" BRING HIM BACK!

Hirudo - "The Leech"

Lilium - "The Fleur de Lys" this one's funny; it was called Apes "the Bees," JUST to be confused with the Bee, singular. Yeah it was actually a different one. Then they renamed it to Vespa, the Wasp, and then again to Lilium, and then AGAIN to Musca Borealis, "the Northern Fly" again, to be confused with Musca, the Fly. And then they just got rid of it entirely and now it's not there anymore at all.

This is a fanfiction of the game Starbound, from when it was in Beta and the Tenant system was first introduced. I wrote this for NaNoWriMo 2014 because I was fascinated by the way the procedurally generated NPCs ran around on their own little missions, fell in love and interacted with their environment.

As this is an anthology, I'm working on the stories one by one to make it easier for editing, and publishing them to Tumblr and AO3.

Hello, Dolos @nightcovefox ! I enjoy being Magolor’s mom! It’s very fun.

I always tried to make his childhood as enjoyable as possible, seeing we were stuck on a dying planet which was progressively running out of resources and people and whatnot.

He’s been the smartest kid around for all his life. I don’t know how anyone manages such brainpower! It’s very impressive. I always knew he was a trickster, though! He chooses to use this high intelligence to prank his friends. Typical. I have to say, sometimes he does some stupid things. But he’s having fun and learning! That’s what matters!

He’s also got to be the bravest person I know. Let’s just say that… he’s seen some stuff. (Can’t give away too much from the fanfic!) And yet, he always has the heart to pick himself up and prove he can survive anything, even the emotional ordeals of being a living person!

And, HE’S ADORABLE. In too many ways to count. He is always trying to help the people he loves and be the kindest he can be, while still having fun! AND HOW COULD YOU IGNORE HIS ADORABLE FACE?! No one can.

Also, did I mention how gay he is? So gay! Must have gotten that from me.

Sometimes I say raising a child is like battling Void Termina. It can be really, painfully hard and stressful when you’re going through, but the reward is wonderful and beautiful! ;P

January’s Night Sky Notes: Connecting the ‘Dots’ with Asterisms

In our December Night Sky Notes, we mentioned that the Orion constellation has a distinct hourglass shape that makes it easy to spot in the night sky. But what if we told you that this is not the complete constellation, but rather, an asterism?

An asterism is a pattern of stars in the night sky, forming shapes that make picking out constellations easy. Cultures throughout history have created these patterns as part of storytelling, honoring ancestors, and timekeeping. Orion’s hourglass is just one of many examples of this, but did you know Orion’s brightest knee is part of another asterism that spans six constellations, weaving together the Winter night sky? Many asterisms feature bright stars that are easily visible to the naked eye. Identify these key stars, and then connect the dots to reveal the shape.

Asterisms Through the Seasons

Try looking for these asterisms this season and beyond:

Winter Circle – this asterism, also known as the Winter Hexagon, makes up a large portion of the Winter sky using stars Rigel, Aldebaran, Capella, Pollux, Procyon, and Sirius as its points. Similarly, the Winter Triangle can be found using Procyon, Sirius, and Betelgeuse as points. Orion’s Belt is also considered an asterism.

Diamond of Virgo – this springtime asterism consists of the following stars: Arcturus, in the constellation Boötes; Cor Caroli, in Canes Venatici; Denebola in Leo, and Spica in Virgo. Sparkling at the center of this diamond is the bright cluster Coma Berenices, or Bernice's Hair – an ancient asterism turned constellation!

Summer Triangle – as the nights warm up, the Summer Triangle dominates the heavens. Comprising the bright stars Vega in Lyra, Deneb in Cygnus, and Altair in Aquila, this prominent asterism is the inspiration behind the cultural festival Tanabata. Also found is Cygnus the Swan, which makes up the Northern Cross asterism.

Great Square of Pegasus – by Autumn, the Great Square of Pegasus can be seen. This square-shaped asterism takes up a large portion of the sky, and consists of the stars: Scheat, Alpheratz, Markab and Algenib.

This image shows the region around the Hyades star cluster, the nearest open cluster to us. The Hyades cluster is very well-studied due to its location, but previous searches for planets have produced only one. A new study led by Jay Farihi of the University of Cambridge, UK, has now found the atmospheres of two burnt-out stars in this cluster — known as white dwarfs — to be “polluted” by rocky debris circling the star. Inset, the locations of these white dwarf stars are indicated — stars known as WD 0421+162, and WD 0431+126.

Tracing these outlines can guide you to objects like galaxies and star clusters. The Hyades, for example, is an open star cluster in the Taurus constellation with evidence of rocky planetary debris. In 2013, Hubble Space Telescope’s Cosmic Origins Spectrograph was responsible for breaking down light into individual components. This observation detected low levels of carbon and silicon – a major chemical for planetary bodies. The Hyades can be found just outside the Winter Circle and is a favorite of both amateur and professional astronomers alike.

How to Spot Asterisms

Use Star Maps and Star Apps – Using star maps or stargazing apps can help familiarize yourself with the constellations and asterisms of the night sky.

Get Familiar with Constellations – Learning the major constellations and their broader shapes visible each season will make spotting asterisms easier.

Use Celestial Landmarks –Orient yourself by using bright stars, or recognizable constellations. This will help you navigate the night sky and pinpoint specific asterisms. Vega in the Lyra constellation is a great example of this.
