i really want to dress up my dolls in halloween costumes, but i can never decide for the girls that don’t have “canon” costumes what they would want to dress up in and what would be (at least somewhat) historically accurate for the time. 😅
i would love to hear how you dress up your dolls for halloween, especially any picks for the historical girls!
#american girl#agblr#american girl dolls#dollblr#my posts#of course we are ignoring Molly’s canon costume here lol#while it would be very historically plausible for her to wear a racist costume I’m not doing that lol#as of right now I’ve got luciana as an astronaut#Maryellen as a cowgirl#Courtney as a space ranger#fairy costume for cécil#and kavi as elphaba#aka the canon ish ones#and then I think I’m going to give kit a homemade looking ghost costume#but I still need to decide a girl to be glinda (using an old Cinderella costume)#and I’ve also got#Elsa and anna (which would be Nicki and Isabel if the weren’t historical tbh)#the ag witch costume (which im leaning towards joss on just based on color scheme)#a non ag witch costume#a cute little candycorn dress (which tbh could also be a witch)#a Rockford peaches uniform which I put on molly last year but I might give to one of the nineties girlies this year#and I think that’s all right now. currently debating on getting a batgirl and supergirl costume pair for ivy and julie.#unfortunately im a huge nerd and would hate that they’re not the 70s batgirl and supergirl.#but I have not seen any patterns I could adapt to make historically accurate ones. and I am not confident enough to pattern from scratch#I would ideally like to have costumes for all the girls from Sam onwards. but that’s a LOT of historical research and patterning.#which like. I can barely FOLLOW a pattern lol#but think of Sam in one of those hilarious lobster dresses. amazing.#im kinda stumped for melody. I was thinking Wonder Woman or Star Trek but although it might be historically accurate im not sure if it fits#her interests. tbh I need to go finish her books#I also would love to know when kids started doing a poodle skirt as halloween costume. because I have one for Maryellen that I could use

It's Spooky Day once again, so everyone is dressed up! In order, we have Robin as an astronaut, Courtney as a space ranger, Wren as Yoda, Sparrow as a sausage, and Eloise as a villain. Ngl I'm kinda sad that the only kids' dress up options for the weather costumes holiday event are Yoda and sausage 😭

Ratchet & Clank Reimagined: Up Your Arsenal
Just like my Going Commando post, here are my (very late) personal ideas of a reimagined Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal. Like I said in my GC post, the misc. mechanics should stay the same but I see some major changes for the mechanics only from UYA.
One major change is to take out and replace all the multiplayer elements in the game, since they weren’t liked much in the original. So instead of just fighting Tyhrranoids and taking a base on Rilgar, maybe you go through Black Water city (maybe war damaged) in order to retrieve an important gadget or fight tons of enemies while doing various objectives on Aridia, kinda like the Argorian fights in A Crack in Time, as well as taking out the “return to selection screen after completing a mission” thing.
Another big change is that space battles should be included, as it was very odd that the original didn’t have any unlike the previous 2 games, again maybe the flight mechanics for these fights could be like the mechanics from the reboot or ACIT. The vid comic sections should also be taken out, as since they were mostly used to give exposition on who Dr. Nefarious was and how he became a villain, something the 2016 game and movie already did. Maybe one could be used as a flashback of Qwark’s near the end of the game.
Maybe audio recordings or holo-diaries could replace the vids as some kind of collectable. Each one could play a small audio recording or video of Dr. Nefarious’s past, specifically on stuff we don’t know in the reimagined timeline like his time with the Galactic Rangers, the first time he was defeated by Qwark, and his time with Drek. A small change is replacing hypershot mechanics with swingshot and maybe kinetic tether mechanics. Also like I said in my GC post, there should only be Gadgetron brand weapons, maybe some Megacorp and/or new original weapons. Maybe Insomniac Games could switch out weapons from Up Your Arsenal for ones from the 1st game like take out the Plasma Whip and Infector and replace them with the Tesla Claw and Decoy Glove.
Now for the plot.
The game could start with Ratchet and Clank helping Grim in his garage but stop when they see the planet attacked by Tyhrranoids, giving us the tutorial level. They are eventually joined by Qwark and the Galactic Rangers (including robots that look like the original Galactic Rangers from R&C 3) and fend off the Tyhrranoid forces until they defeat them. The gang then get a message from the president who congratulates them on there victory but tells them its not over yet and shows them a video of Dr. Nefarious and Lawrence declaring war on Solana. He tells them the video’s signal came from Florana so Ratchet, Clank and Qwark go while the others stay behind.
The 3 arrive on Florana and after fighting through the wildlife and an ancient temple they run into Skruch who brings them to Dr. Nefarious’s base where they find clues that he was there awhile ago. They get a call from Sasha, saying her ship will be their HQ till they stop Nefarious where they go and meet Sasha where after they tell her what they found, she tells them that she is in command on the hunt for Dr. Nefarious, maybe much to Qwark or even Cora’s (who could have been the leader after Qwark left) dismay. Before Qwark/Cora can say anything they get a message that planet Aridia is under attack much to there surprise. I know Aridia happens later but I always found it odd that the villain would attack the capital after attacking a minor planet like Veldin, so I think in a reimaging, they should save that for later, maybe replace it with minor levels before that.
The gang go there and we get the first open field level, where you go around doing objectives to win, like taking out tanks and guarding other characters while they set up defenses. Though they succeed in stopping the invasion, someone notices that some machinery was stolen and taken off planet. Though the gang wonders why the Tyhranoids took the machinery they brush it off when they get a message from Sasha saying that with the war brewing, they’ll need the modified hologuise called the tyhrra-guise to aid them, however the transport ship crashed over Rilgar, so Ratchet and Clank go to see if they can get it, fighting the planet’s and Tyhrranoid forces who are also after the device. They eventually find one that’s slightly damage and take it back to HQ. After saying it will take some time to fix it everyone is alerted that Marcadeia is under attack by a massive Tyhrranoid fleet.
This is where the 1st space battle happens as before they can get on the planet, they have to fight through a blockade of ships, maybe take out small ships and minor defenses first then destroy the lead ship. After that they land on the planet and fight through ground forces until they get to the presidential compound, where they fight waves of enemies until defenses are set up. The president thanks everyone again but tells R&C that they need to fix the planets defenses in order to stop the attack, this is when Ratchet gets the Tyhrra-guise and uses it (no reflector in this game) to get through the defense building to find Al, who was held hostage by the Tyhrranoids and together they fix the defense systems.
After that the president tells them that his intel found a base owned by Nefarious on Aquatos and ask the Rangers to take care of it, in the process Qwark is made a Captain again (something I didn’t mention in the last game, maybe it could happen in that as well) which makes him happy and in the process forms the Q Force consisting of him, Ratchet, Clank, AL, and Skrunch. They then decide that Ratchet, Clank, and Al (replacing Skid) should go down to Aquatos to see if they can find anything useful which they do after a Hacker escort mission and a Clank level, maybe Ratchet & Clank meet the in hiding Slim Cognito in his original appearance, not the reimagined. After acquiring and decoding some data they got, the gang find the main Tyhrranoids base on their home planet so they go there and stop them, hoping to deplete Nefarious’s forces.
After another space battle and R&C taking down the air defenses, the other Galactic Rangers, maybe Sasha as well, join the battle where unlike the original where you destroy turrets to open a big door, the heroes go around doing objectives in order to get the big door to open like destroy shield generators and fighting waves of reinforcements before entering the door. Once inside, maybe instead of the mama Tyhrranoid the characters fight a giant robot. Also I’ve been thinking, given there lack of popularity maybe the new characters from the movie could be killed/written out during or after this game ? If killed off maybe this is when someone, maybe Brax, is killed.
After defeating the robot, they go back to the Phoenix to think of there next plan (after mouring Brax death) where with coordinates they got on Tyhrranosis, R&C go to Daxx to check it out and we get a storyline similar to the original game as they find 2 leads, one of Courtney Gears (or maybe a robot parodying a different celebrity, maybe a Kardashian?) and of the Obani moons. They tell someone to look up where they can find Courtney Gears (or new character) while they go to the Obani moons to find some leads. After fighting there way through some of the moons (which maybe shouldn’t have that gravity leaping puzzle moon) they find a device shielding one of them so they call the Rangers (maybe AL) to disarm it who in return tell R&C that Courtney Gears is hosting at anillilation nation.
After completing a few challenges they go talk to her and after asking if she knows where and what Nefarious is up to, she says she’ll tell them if they perform in her latest movie (I don’t think they should do the secret agent clank bit in the game). They agree and after a Clank level, Courtney Gears betrays and takes Clank to places unknown. Ratchet then gets attacks by enemies and plans to meet Clank at the ship but Ratchet notices that Clank is acting weird but shrugs it off after Clank says that Courtney Gears is gone. Lucky for them they get a call from the Rangers saying that the shield is down and the moon is available for them to get on but the two see them and Al get captured by Courtney Gears. They go but are ambushed by her forces and a air battle occurs. After that the two confront Courtney Gears on the moon and find AL but and other people, some of which are part robot on the planet where they learn the planet is use to turn organics into robots.
They defeat her and call the Rangers to pick up Al and the others who again in turn tell them that a Nefarious’s ship was spotted on the Zeldrin Starport. They decide to go and meet up with Qwark and Skrunch, and after going though the entire spaceport to get to Nefarious’s ship (instead of it being used for a small gadget, maybe a smaller path there could be used for that) They don’t find him but a hologram who initiates the ship’s self destruct, which in the middle of the process separates Qwark from the others but he does tell them that he found plans for something involving Metropolis (the true capital of Kerwan). After the duo and Skrunch get to an escape pod, Klunk detaches without waiting for Qwark where we then get a funeral scene for a dead Qwark where after the funeral Ratchet gets the idea that Nefarious is heading to Metropolis.
The level’s pretty much the same as in the original, the Biobliterator is introduced and you fight Giant Klunk but I do see some big changes here and there. One optional idea is that what if someone like Ratchet or Sasha gets a piece of them hit by the Biobliterator and throughout the rest of the game, it spreads throughout there body meaning they’ll turn into a robot unless they find a cure. Another change could be how after Nefarious leaves, the Biobliterator is still doing its job so the heroes try and destroy it before it leaves the planet leading to a series of missions like a reunited R&C have to get the (robot) Galactic Rangers to there ships being blocked by enemy forces and after that we get a sky battle where they take down enemy ships to get to the biobliterator only for it to get away. This get rids of the optional Ranger missions from the original.
Hope seems lost until the gang decides to check out the crashed Leviathan where they find a flash drive and proof that Qwark is alive. R&C decide to go into Qwark’s quarters on the Phoenix where they find and read a journal where Qwark wrote about his first fight with Dr. Nefarious (maybe in the form of a side scroller) learning more about the history between them before the 2016 game and also about his secret base. They go and fight through the defenses where they find Qwark alive and scared to fight Nefarious leading to Ratchet and Skrunch leaving him out of anger but Clank giving words of advice. They go back to the ship and return to the Phoenix where there suddenly attacked by Dr. Nefarious’s forces and fight to get them all out. When wondering what happened Al reveals that the thing he gave him has Nefarious plan to turn everyone into robots on it and that Veldin is next if not stopped.
This leads to the Galactic Rangers attacking Koros distracting the main forces while Ratchet, Clank, and maybe Cora sneak on to get to the turret to destroy the Biobliterator. They get to it but maybe Cora dies during the process, maybe this could be when the they find a way to turn everyone back into organics as well. They succeed in using the turret but only damage the Biobliterator (I didn’t like the 2nd biobliterator plot twist from the original) and before they can fire again the Biobliterator escapes but they know it won’t go far, going to planet Mylon to stop Nefarious once and for all.
They fight through the base’s defenses and get to Nefarious who starts up the Biobliterator and a boss fight occurs but after defeating Nefarious, he teleports into the machine and activate its destruction mode (no robot form) and aims to destroy R&C but Qwark comes in and saves them resulting in a air battle where maybe instead of just shooting at it, there are objectives to destroy it, like blowing up a thermal exhaust port XD or R&C Clank go in to set bombs on the power source. Maybe reverse this as maybe you fight the Biobliteratior first then R&C go in on foot to destroy its power source then fight Dr. Nefarious along the way.
They destroy the machine as maybe Nefarious and the gang celebrate the end of the war, mourning for those they lost and hearing the remaining movie character say there going into retirement. Of course there is a end credit cutscene of Nefarious and Lawrence surviving and being trapped on an asteroid, maybe as a twist it has some organic life forms on it that are fond of Nefarious much to his dismay.
What would want to see in a Up Your Arsenal reimagined ?

I read 87 books this year, which is within the same neighbourhood as what I've been managing for the past few years. One of these days I will make it up to 100 again! (which, okay, on checking I've done exactly ONCE in the last decade, in 2013, so it's not like I have a lot of precedent. But. Someday!)
Rereads: 18
Genre breakdown: History: 22 Romance: 22 Fantasy: 21 Science Fiction: 19 Kidlit: 8 Nonfiction: 6 YA: 6 Comics: 5 Memoir: 3 Old books: 3 Famous/Classic: 2 Mystery: 2 Literary Fiction: 1
Books with male authors: 18 Books with female authors: 67 Books with nonbinary authors: 4
Books with authors of colour: 20
(as always, stats are to be taken with a grain of salt, as I may have made mistakes in my counting or misunderstood an author's identity or straight-up forgotten what genre a book was)
I'm doing relatively well on reading authors who aren't white - just a few years ago I was only reading maybe a couple a year, which was really bad, and I've definitely bumped it up in the last few years. This year is the one with the most so far, but I want to keep working on this. I haven't even made it to one in four yet so I obviously have lots of room for improvement!
Despite how many truly excellent books I read this year, including some which would have been winners in any other year, my fave new-to-me fiction book of the year is obvious: A Memory Called Empire, which absolutely blew me away. It's just SO GOOD YOU GUYS!!!! (I just reread my review of it in the course of constructing this post and I am once again overcome by feelings. I need to reread that book.)
I didn't read much nonfiction this year, so it's a slim market for fave new-to-me nf. I think it's gotta be Educated.
There's some tough competition this year for which book is my fave reread of the year. I think I have to go with Pride & Prejudice, which is a classic for a reason, but a bunch of others are worthy contenders.
Least favourite book of the year is either April Lady or Someone to Wed. Both are bad romance novels, but for different reasons: April Lady is stressful and unromantic, Someone to Wed is boring. And then both also manage to be sexist and racist to varying degrees.

Ratchet and Kim Possible Chronicles: The Solanian Revolution-Part 13
After a long flight, they managed to arrive at the moon system. As soon as they got out of the ship, Kim and Ron were immediately mesmerized by the atmosphere of the first moon. Ratchet took notice of this instantly. Ratchet: "Uh…are you… guys…OK?" Ron: "Whoa…just look at this place…What kind of freaky moon is this?" Kim: "I know, I can't even make out what this is."
Ratchet walked beside them and looked out at the atmosphere. Ratchet: "Oh! That's right, you have yet to see something like this. I keep forgetting about that." Kim: "Oh, no big. You're use to this; we're not. I have to admit, this is breathtaking." Ron: "Yeah, it is. But not literally, thank goodness…because…you know, being in space and all." Kim: "True. I hate to admit it, but Drakken is right; there are some things even I can't do." Ratchet: "Come on, let's get moving."
He walked off, Clank followed after him. Kim: "OK…we're coming…"
They went after Ratchet and Clank. Continuing on their way through the first of the Obani Moons, they took some time to look around. The entire place had some nice scenery with some plants all over the place, such as trees; something that amazed Kim and Ron. There were also some lava pits which they made strides to avoid.
They were soon able to reach another moon which had a metallic outer appearance. This also greatly astonished Kim and Ron. Ratchet, however, seemed annoyed by them being enthralled by their surroundings and snapped them out of it. Ratchet: "Yeah, I know you're both fascinated by all of this but we have to keep going; we're on a mission." Kim: "Uh…yeah…right…we'll be right there…"
They eventually hurried off. They ran through the second moon. There were robots everywhere but the group managed to handle them without a problem. It was a very long trek through the moon; they kept going until they reached a certain point of the moon.
Soon enough, they ran into Skidd, or rather, he ran into them. Skidd: "Cover me!"
He tripped and fell directly in front of them. Everyone but Ron seemed displeased to see him. Skidd: "Man down!" Ron: "Skidd!" Ratchet: "Skidd? What are you doing here?"
Skidd got himself back up and dusted himself off. Skidd: "Oh! Um…I was just…looking for some action. Thought I might help you guys out some more." Ratchet: "OK…so…what exactly…brings you to…the Obani Moon System?" Skidd: "No reason. Just scoutin, around, lookin' for a way to help you dudes and dudette out. And wouldn't you know it, I ran into you guys…here…of all places…" Ratchet: "Uh…yeah…great…" Skidd: "So…um…what now?" Ratchet: "Hm…"
Ratchet looked around. He looked up and noticed something. Ratchet: "Hey, guys! Look!"
Everyone else looked up and noticed a very large mechanical moon. Ron: "Whoa! Is that another moon?" Kim: "Seems like it…" Rufus: "Whoa…" Ratchet: "That's not all, that moon appears to be encased in an omega-class disintegration field." Ron: "Uh…yeah…I don't have any idea what any that means." Kim: "I'm guessing that it's some kind of force field and whatever is going on there, it can't be good." Ratchet: "My thoughts exactly, Kim. But how do we get up there? Hm…perhaps Wade can help us out with this. We could have him hack into that generator over there and shut the field down." Skidd: "Hey, no need to have that computer dude do anything like that. Just let me take care of this. I even brought this with me."
Skidd pulled out a crowbar. Kim: "Uh-huh…a crowbar…" Ratchet: "Yeah…that's clearly as helpful as Wade." Skidd: "Stand back, I'm like a trained professional."
He walked up to the generator. The group watched his lackluster attempt to tamper with it. Ratchet: "Well…this isn't exactly what I call impressive; not even second-rate." Kim: "At least he's putting forth more effort to help us out than Qwark." Ratchet: "(sigh) True…"
They continued to watch Skidd's efforts, which was still lackluster. Kim: "I'll have Wade hack the generator, anyway."
Kim pulled out her Kimmunicator. Just then, they heard a chime. Clank: "Incoming call from the Galactic Rangers."
The rangers were calling the group from a battle in another alien metropolis called Blackwater City, asking them to come and help them out. Ratchet: "Come on, guys, the rangers need our help." Skidd: "Yeah, I'll, uh, stay here and work on this generator thingie." Ratchet: "OK, you do that. Give us a call if anything comes up." Skidd: "Awesome! Catch ya later, guys."
The group walked off. Ratchet: "Hey, Kim, did you get Wade to work on that thing?" Kim: "He said he's already on it." Ratchet: "Great. I know Wade can handle it. Skidd, on the other hand, well…I really am not too sure about…" Kim: "You and me both."
They returned to the ship, got back in and flew off.
They arrived on the planet where Blackwater City is. From there, they flew through the skies above the city. Ratchet pressed a few buttons on the console. Immediately afterwards, the windshield of the ship opened up. Ron: "Oh, no, not again."
They were ejected from the ship, with Ron screaming. Ratchet grabbed on to Clank and attached him to his back.
They were free-falling towards the city and arrived in the middle of the battle taking place. Ranger: "Glad you and you team could make it, sarge. The noids have been hammering us like you wouldn't believe." Kim: "Well, we're here, so you don't need to worry anymore." Ratchet: "Come on, guys. Let's go take down some Tyhrranoids."
They rushed into the heat of battle.
There were Tyhrranoids everywhere, with more of them coming. During the battle, Kim received an upgrade of her Combat Gloves and Combat Kicks from Wade, increasing her fighting capabilities. The Tyhrranoids seem to be outnumbering the rangers, but Ratchet, Kim and everyone else really held their own. It was a fierce battle, but thanks to Ratchet and his group, the battle was tipped in their favor. Soon enough, the battle was over and the Tyhrranoids were defeated. The rangers praised the group and thanked them for their help. Just then, the Kimmunicator went off, Kim pulled it out. Kim: "Yeah, Wade?" Wade: "Kim, I've been doing a little digging aside from trying to hack that generator on that moon. I found out something interesting. Now, you guys mentioned something to me about a robot pop star named Courtney Gears, right?" Dr. P.: "Wait! Hold on for a sec."
At that moment, Dr. Possible appeared on the screen beside Wade. Dr. P.: "What's this I hear about some kind of robot pop star?" Ratchet: "Dr. Possible! Hey, what's up?" Kim: "Yeah, we know of Courtney Gears. She is apparently a huge sensation of the Solana Galaxy. However, she hates organic life forms as much as Dr. Nefarious. We watched a music video of her singing about her hatred of them." Ron: "A very hurtful music video at that." Kim: "And she wants to wipe them all out. You could say that she's in league with Nefarious." Dr. P.: "Those dang pop stars are just the worst kind of people! One minute, they're singing and entertaining people; the next, they're siding with evil masterminds and wiping out all life forms." Ratchet: "Uh…are pop stars from Earth generally like that?" Kim: "No, not really." Ron: "But close enough." Wade: "Anyway…like I mentioned before, I've been doing some digging and found out that there is a special event being held at Annihilation Nation in which one of the major prizes is a chance to meet the Solanian pop icon herself." Ratchet: "What? Really? That's great! Just the break we have been looking for." Wade: "I wouldn't be too sure about that. If Courtney really does hate all organic life forms like you said, then she would want nothing to do with you guys." Ratchet: "Don't sweat it, Wade. Meeting with her is a grand prize of Annihilation Nation, so she would have to interact with us regardless. Besides, it could be the only chance we have to ask her what she knows about Dr. Nefarious and his evil plans." Wade: "Well…alright. I wish you the best of luck but I don't think you'll be able to get much out of her." Kim: "I don't think so either but we'll give it our best shot."
Kim tucked away the Kimmunicator. Ratchet: "Come on, let's get back to Annihilation Nation pronto." Kim: "OK."
They went over to where the ship landed, got back in and flew off.

New from Every Movie Has a Lesson by Don Shanahan: MOVIE REVIEW: Project Power
Tumblr media
PROJECT POWER— 2 STARS
Whether it’s initially scribbled on a shitty cocktail napkin in a fog of bong smoke while occupying a disheveled couch or composed neatly on a souped-up MacBook atop a Feng Shui desk in a posh nook of some creative person’s living space, a potent idea can propel a writer’s bender to attempt a screenplay. Netflix’s Project Power has one of those high concepts where the mere thought of it gets you to hear late announcer Don LaFontaine in your head. Putting on his pitch voice, imagine a world where people can gain temporary superpowers from a mere pill. Picture the intriguing implications, suspense, and spectacle and your popcorn starts cooking already.
Now, at the peak of such anticipation, go back and remember the high concept movies you’ve seen that had very little beyond that one good idea. Feel a burn or two? Is Andrew Niccol, or worse M. Night Shyamalan, spinning and killing your brain cells again? Regrettably, kind of like erectile dysfunction, this kind of thing happens sometimes. Add Project Power to the list of damn good concepts that stop short of critical mass.
What is Project Power like mixing urban drug culture with edgy comic book overtones? Funny you should ask. Take it back to when even a pro like Don LaFontaine couldn’t keep a straight face pretending to sell male enhancement drugs on The Tonight Show. The listed side effects he exaggerates with an invasive giggle for such medication could easily match this actioner from the Nerve and Paranormal Activity 4 directing team of Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. The pitfalls are the same.
In the Netflix flick, the Crescent City is beginning to percolate with an uptick of crime incidents coupled with fantastical tabloid-like reports of superhuman feats. The cause is the invasive use of a new street drug dubbed “Power” that an organized source (in the form of the slick black hats of 300’s Rodrigo Santoro and Transparent’s Amy Landecker) is starting introduce into the New Orleans market through low-level drug dealers like the twitchy Newt (Colson Baker, aka Machine Gun Kelly) and teenaged rap impresario Robin (the co-headlining and multi-talented Dominique Fishback). The pricy glowing capsule grants the consumer unbridled effects for an extended hit of five minutes.
LESSON #1: YOU GET WHAT YOU GET— Power’s reaction is different for every “I want to see what happens” user. One person could wield fire, become bulletproof, or have an animalistic bonus. The next could explode or melt into a puddle of deformity or fleshy goo. The only way to find out is to take the pill and see what happens, and that’s the crux of the movie’s buzz. Just like the pill, you get what you get with Project Power. Some school teacher out there (ok, it’s this one) will add a poetic rhyme after that line to say “you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit.”  Well, so much for a warning label.
The long-arm of the law combating this rapidly growing mini-crisis is represented by Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s dedicated homer Frank Shaver. Robin is one of Frank’s undercover informants and his own supplier of Power that he uses to secretly get an edge on the job off the books from his overmatched captain (a grossly underused Courtney B. Vance). Clad in an ever-present Steve Gleason New Orleans Saints jersey under his necklace badge and a poorly-accented “not in my town” tough guy scowl, JGL plays this role, for worse more than better, as Mark Wahlberg Lite. The more Frank seeks the suppliers to level the playing field, the more he suspects larger clandestine governmental involvement.
The smoking gun enigma who knows the deeper implications of Power and the connected network controlling it is Jamie Foxx’s ex-Army Ranger Art. His own vendetta of investigations crosses paths with Newt, Robin, and soon Frank as his target is an urgently personal one, namely his missing daughter Tracy (Kyanna Simpson). Along the way, the three encounter the escalation of the drug’s pervasive use and the entrapment of its unchecked consequences.
In those collected moments of nonsensical chases against unmotivated heavies, there is some sizzle for the escapist thrills that have been lacking this summer movie season. There is one dynamite action scene of note where Michael Simmonds’ camera stays on the calamitous transformation of a side character in the foreground while the mayhem swirls behind them. Clever special effects from Ivan Moran and Yves De Bono paint manifested abilities over the stunts and fights coordinated by the team of Kevin Scott and Cory DeMeyers, all while Joseph Trapanese’s booming score sets the beatdown beats.
LESSON #2: KIDS, STAY AWAY FROM DRUGS— We get it. Superpowers are cool. We’d love some, but is it worth the risks just to see what happens for five minutes and a couple hundred bucks? Much like necessary exercise to get ripped and the hard work needed to get rich, there are no shortcuts. Nothing is free and drugs are too good to be true. Push the pills away. While you’re at it, don’t sell them either.
LESSON #3: BE SUPER ON THE INSIDE— Somewhere along the way, Art’s protective wing of wisdom extended to Robin tries to emphasize the greatness people have on the inside. Awww! Fishback is easily the core of the movie and Foxx is a lifting presence of integrity. Everyone has talents that don’t need to be super and they need to be fostered, shared, and used for the good of one’s self and others. Aww! That’s a nice higher place, but a clumsy pillar for a movie still dealing with more limited wrongdoers than heroes.
The fading buzz of Project Power comes from screenwriter Mattson Tomlin. Fair credit can easily be given to the future The Batman co-writer for that big bright central concept that grabs originality and attention. Project Power operates without comic book sources, though we’re all going to point our fingers at the borrowed logic, inspirations, and tropes. The movie makes an effort to form its own superhero sky above a grounded setting of tall buildings easy to bound. Like the chemical addiction on screen, you have at best, five-minute spurts here and there of those leaps from the concept. You’re likely left asking where all of the power goes.

Stargirl - S1 E7 & E8 - Shiv Part One & Part Two
Dear God, once again Pat and Courtney proved to be the worst liars, which is kind of a prerequisite if you're going to have a secret identity.  I swear, to the outside observer it has to look like these two are screwing around - which obviously would be really bad, what with Courtney being his step-daughter and, you know, a minor, but that with all the sneaking around and clumsy explanations, it makes whatever they're doing that they've covering for seem even more suspicious.
Okay, so Barbara does apparently work in... an office... for the Mayor?  Governor?  I know it's Icicle, but I'm not clear what his position is.  He's talking about some property out of town, but he mentions city council. So if they need someplace to train, why not the JSA base?  Surely they had some sort of practical space, unless it was only used for hanging giant banners of their likeness.  Naturally it's not super clear where the base is located relative to Blue Valley, seeing as Courtney rode STRIPE there the first time she visited, but she went back on her own to get the JSA gear. Whatever.  If Pat can build his mech suit in secret, it really doesn't matter... I honest to God expected Pat to say, "Teamwork makes the dream work." Shock, gaps, Cindy's the daughter of a villain, who has trainer her to be a villain.  I can not believe it. 😐 I mean, I can believe it, because even before I saw the stills of her in her villain outfit prior to getting around to watching this, I could see what they were planning a mile away; because again, despite it's initial appearances of being something awesome and original, is basically a mash-up of Disney's Descendant and Power Rangers.  And not even the classic MMPR, but one of the lamer later seasons, like Dino Thunder.  So of course her dad is going to turn out to be a villain, because half the parents on the show have turned out to be a villain; and now Cindy's basically turning out to be that one evil Ranger that appears each season.  Which probably means Courtney will deliver some grand speech about friendship or smash and amulet or some bullshit and Cindy will want to give up killing people and become a hero... I think the more disappointing element is that they had the chance to a route more like Cordelia on Buffy; who started out as an entitled diva and bully, only to develop into a character with much greater depth and compassion.  Maybe that sort of arc would have been predictable too. Yeah, okay, so Pat's son (whose name is apparently Mike), is jealous of the "dad-time" Courtney's getting from Pat.  Although, for one thing, the show has relegated both this kid and Barbara, to the background for the last 6 episode; one of the rare exceptions being last week when they actually did have the two bond, which kind of undermines his argument a little that he doesn't interact with Barbara the same way Courtney has been with Pat.  And seeing as how in truth Pat and Courtney were hardly interact for a long stretch while Courtney was running around behind his back to assemble a new JSA; Mike's argument seems a little overstated.  I suppose I can understand his resentment to a point, but until now we didn't have any reason to think Pat hadn't been giving his son the enough attention (aside from that time he and Courtney randomly decided to up and leave to visit the JSA headquarters).  I don't count the last episode where Pat didn't go to the science fair, since Matt told him parents weren't invited.  Sure, in the real world information probably would have gone out to parents to tell them otherwise, but seeing as neither Pat nor Barbara knew of the fair beforehand, they also wouldn't have any reason to doubt what Mike tells them when he says parents don't attend; which is not impossible for some types of school functions.  I thought it was weird Barbara showed up anyway, even if it was predictable. Hmm, now I wonder who Matt's mom is (was?) and why she's no longer in the picture.  Probably a super villain... Is Sports Master Pat's trainer?  Or are they just two generic looking white guys? Let me guess, the janitor is Johnny Thunder?  If memory serves, in the comics they did some type of story where Johnny, in his post hero life, kind of lost touch with his sense of reality.  People didn't understand the importance of his pen and thought his stories of a genie were delusions. I could be way off and it could be someone else from the old JSA... Part Two Well, ramming your car into a post is...one way of explaining Courtney's injuries.  I can't think of another plausible way, but how exactly did that all work out, since I assume Courtney wasn't in the car?  Or maybe she was, so paramedics on the scene would find her there, but what about Mike?  He definitely wouldn't have been in the car when Pat clearly, intentionally crashed the car; so what's the explanation for Courtney and Pat out riding around without Mike?  Are they going to claim Courtney was driving?  *Sigh*.... They're going to claim Courtney was driving.... But how did Pat get her to the hospital?  Like, in what condition? She seems to be waking up in the hospital, ostensibly for the first time since the fight; did Pat... changer her out of her Stargirl costume, before taking her into the hospital? I'll admit, they kind of had me with Cindy's visit to Courtney's house; because of course it would be cliche for her not to pick up on the obvious clues that Courtney was Stargirl and go to her house and make it seem like she knows, only for it to turn out to be because she legitimately wanted to show her sympathy.  Figuring it out is a level of self-awareness they couldn't even give Lena Luthor... Did this really need to be two episode...? I really feel bad for Pat; he's basically gone from side-kick to babysitter... If you're going to use your brain to float an old fashioned key around the room and see what it might open; might it not make more sense to try one of the less common locks in the room first?  I mean, why both trying to use it on the fucking patio door before the random locks on a bookcase?  For someone with telekensis, this guy's kind of dumb. This last minute rematch feels so fucking anti-climactic.  Like, sure, Cindy beat Courtney bad the last episode, but there's virtually no stakes here, other than Cindy knowing Courtney's identity.  And she could probably figure out by association who her super-friends are, but they're treating this fight like it's some sort of epic showdown, with a bunch of build up that's never actually happened.  Plus, they've staged things in such a way that there's really only likely outcome; which, even before I watch more than the first minute of the fight, I can probably guess that Cindy is going to be taken down to such a degree as to be near death, either by Courtney, which will weigh on her, or by Henry, possibly as a result of him losing control of his powers.  Given her advanced healing, compounded with her knowing about Courtney, it's the only viable conclusion to the fight that allows Courtney and the others to go about their so-called normal lives next week.  It's the exact same reason Brainwave ended up in a coma.  They've made her too powerful of foe and given her too much of an edge to allow Cindy to come out of this episode as a continuing threat. No doubt whatever condition she's in at the end, her father will stitch her back together or grow a new one or whatever. Which will probably be the concluding shot of the episode. And....it's Henry. Called it... Albeit, Cindy's less defeated than expected and more...dragged down to the sewer to by monks...?

**WARNING** SPOILERS BELOW!
1. The Hidden Oracle (The Trials of Apollo #1) - Rick Riordan, ★★★★ Here's the thing. I know these are middle school books, HOWEVER some of my favorite modern literary characters have come from Riordan's Demigod books and this one contains the return of two of my favorites. I'm glad that he's continuing to write them, though I wish he would up the reading level, as I'm sure a lot of his readers are into YA levels now. An easy start for the new year! Progress: January 1, 2017 – Started Reading January 4, 2017 – Finished Reading
2. Dragon Fly in Amber (Outlander #2) - Diana Gabaldon, ★★★★ I must admit, I enjoyed this one much more than the first (a surprise, considering I wasn't a huge fan of season 2 of the show). It deals a lot more with history and the coming together of the Rising, which was more interesting than I expected. The ending was still incredibly sad and hopeful (as I did expect) and got me right in the heart. Progress: January 5, 2017 – Started Reading January 6, 2017 –page 79. "This book is long af. I was surprised to see a big reveal for a character (if you could call it that, I guess) in the first chapter. Oh the differences between tv writing and novels." January 12, 2017 –page 389. "Dude just pulled a snake out of his pocket like it was no thing. Wtf was happening in France?! Don't keep snakes in your jackets, gents. That is weird af." January 14, 2017 –page 521 "Sudden POV shift to Jaime is odd and unexpected. It seems that it's just in chunks? Makes it feel uneven." January 15, 2017 – Finished Reading
3. Seven Up (Stephanie Plum #7) - Janet Evanovich, ★★★ Stephanie is bad at her job, these are super formulaic and there's a standard love triangle, yet I can't stop reading these. They are the potato chip of bounty hunter novels. Progress: January 16, 2017 – Started Reading January 18, 2017 – Finished Reading
4. Packing For Mars: The Curious Science of Life In The Void - Mary Roach, ★★★★★ Full of science, humor and a lot of information I never thought to ask about space.  Mary Roach is my favorite science writer, quite possibly my favorite non-fiction writer. 5. Hard Eight (Stephanie Plum #8) - Janet Evanovich, ★★★ I figure since this book came out over 13 years ago, spoilers don't count, so I'm not going to put this under a cut, but at least a warning. WARNING. Stephanie is still terrible at her job, goes through cars more often than she buys tanks of gas, but at least she FINALLY BANGED RANGER. Unfortunately we only got a paragraph of explanation, which does not do justice to his apparent sexiness. (For the record, I'm still Team Cupcake.)  This one did feel a bit different, as she wasn't money-driven to solve the case. It does lend her a bit more... humanity? Progress: January 25, 2017 – Started Reading January 25, 2017 – page 94 "Gdi Stephanie, if you're going to handcuff a FTA to your car, DON'T LEAVE THE KEYS IN IT.  I swear 😒 is the only face I make when reading these." 6. The Odds of Loving Grover Cleveland - Rebekah Crane, ★★★ I got this as a Kindle First Read and decided to read it as a filler between trips to the library. It proved to be a very quick read, and reminded me of Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, though they aren't really that similar. (I had conflicting feelings about that one, too.) I think it does downplay mental illness, but does a good job of showcasing the power of friendship (less cheesy than it sounds), being there, and how tenuous that can be. 8. To The Nines (Stephanie Plum #9), ★★★ Finally some real character development! Or at least acknowledgement from Stephanie that she has learned things (wearing sensible shoes) and that she feels lackluster in her performance. It was interesting to see her finally evaluate her life outside of who she is as a romantic partner (I know that the romance is a big part of the series, but still).  And it was nice to see Vinnie be a little less creepy and explore some different bond types. 9. At Night We Walk In Circles - Daniel Alarcón, ★★★★ A winding novel with an unexpected ending.  I really had no idea what it was going to be about, but I had read Lost City Radio in 07 or 08 for my Writers on Writing class and enjoyed it quite a bit and was excited to see that he had written another novel. 10. Ten Big Ones (Stephanie Plum #10) - Janet Evanovich, ★★ I have a lot of issues with this one. First the good: Ranger and the tiny peek into his life. And the return of Sally Sweet!!  The bad: This one feels pretty racist with all of the gang bits.  Stephanie seems to suffer no consequences for her terrible actions and she continues to suck at her job. Despite her constant refusal to get a different job, there are times where she's is pretty lackadaisical when it comes to actually doing it.  There were A LOT of questionable things that happened, some really awful and terrible things, and at the end everyone is like, "lol, nbd." ARE YOU KIDDING ME. Actions have consequences, unless you're at the end of a Plum novel, I guess. Progress: February 18, 2017 – Started Reading February 22, 2017 – page 181 "So much fat shaming/ guilt happening right now I want to stop reading.  This is the part of 'chick lit' that I loathe. February 23, 2017 - page 226 "Jfc Stephanie, this is the worst idea, ever. If I didn't know the series was continuing, I'd think this is how the character got killed off." 11. We Were the Lucky Ones - Georgia Hunter, ★★★★ Oh, my heart.  This was pretty difficult for me to start, mostly because I didn't want to get too attached to characters that were bound to have a horrific end. However, once it gets going (ie, all the terrible things start happening), it goes pretty quickly.  I don't know if if any one novel can encapsulate the spanning horror of the Holocaust, and I appreciate (not sure if that's the right word) that Hunter went for a more focused approach, scattering milestone dates within the story. 12. Eleven on Top (Stephanie Plum #11) - Janet Evanovich, ★★ :Deep, prolonged, exasperated sigh:  Stephanie, Stephanie, Stephanie. 13. Twelve Sharp (Stephanie Plum #12) - Janet Evanovich, ★★★★ FINALLY. A story I liked!  We get a lot of Ranger in this one, a pretty decent story, and none of Stephanie's cars blow up! She's competent and not as silly. I was wrong about the 'turning point' moment! Finally, finally, finally. Progress: March 13, 2017 – Started Reading March 15, 2017 – page 201 "There's usually a point in each of the novels where I think, 'that is how everything is going to go to hell.' 14. Lean Mean Thirteen (Stephanie Plum #13) - Janet Evanovich, ★★★ I had issues with some of the motives in this one (especially with Joyce) and I continue to be annoyed that Morelli and Ranger pass Stephanie between them while 'protecting' her. The ending seemed a bit trite, but at least her car died in a normal way.  Not entirely sure how I feel about her constantly complaining about her job. But perhaps I'm expecting too much. 15. The Shelf Life of Happiness - David Machado, ★★★ I got this as a Kindle First read, so I wasn't really sure what I was getting into. I liked it well enough. 16. Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War - Mary Roach, ★★★★ Though not my favorite of Roach's books (that will always go to Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers), I found this a lot more interesting than I thought I would because it's about subjects I wouldn't have immediately thought of when thinking, 'war.'  A lot of the 'gross' that Roach does so well, (who thinks about diarrhea when fighting a battle?) along with textile science and shark repellent. 17. Paper Boats - Dee Lestari, ★★★★ I ended up loving this book a lot more than I expected it to.  It's very sweet. The characters are charming and likeable. It does a very good job of capturing the awkward personal growth that happens during college and how it affects relationships.  I thought I could feel a bit of Tiffany Tsao in her translation, at least I found some similarities to her novel. I can certainly see why Lestari is such a popular writer in Indonesia. One of the best Kindle First books I've read. Progress: May 18, 2017 – Started Reading May 23, 2017 – Finished Reading
18. Hemingway Didn’t Say That: The Truth Behind Familiar Quotations - Garson O’Toole, ★★ Oof. I will say that this is very well researched. Clearly a lot of time and effort went into finding the origins of these quotes, and I do appreciate that.  However, I am not a fan of how the information is presented. Most of it feels pretentious ("QI feels...") and stiff. To be completely honest, I don't read many nonfiction books for a similar reason, so it's purely opinion. Progress: May 24, 2017 – Started Reading May 24, 2017 – 1.0% "Holy pretentiousness Batman... This might be rough to get through, but I really love quotes..." 19. Shatter Me (Shatter Me #1) - Tahereh Mafi, ★★★★ I have to say, I was pretty surprised by this novel.  The premise is not new (dystopia, boy meets girl, etc, etc), but Mafi has a very distinct and different writing style that I find quite enjoyable. It's different. I imagine a lot of people hate it? There's several instances where people are commenting on Juliette's body that are gross and super off-putting. I'm hoping this is something that diminishes in further novels.  SPOILER: The best part was the end though, SURPRISE IT'S JUST A SUPERHERO ORIGIN STORY. All of a sudden we're in this weird X-Men/Inhumans universe and I am so here for it.  Looking forward to reading the rest. Progress: June 21, 2017 – Started Reading June 25, 2017 – Finished Reading

21. Unite Me (Shatter Me #1.5 & 2.5) - Tahereh Mafi, ★★ Destroy Me: I do not understand people's love for Warner. I'm going to put this under a spoiler cut, just in case.  SPOILER: He's the embodiment of entitled masculinity. He wants Juliette even though: he doesn't really know her, she hates him, he thinks she'll 'save him, and that he deserves her. It's gross. He literally kidnapped her after stalking her. He manipulated her on more than one occasion, bordering on torture, just to see what she was capable of. And now he's reading her diary/book as though he has the right to know those thoughts. His image of Juliette has been stripped of all agency. I don't care that he has qualms about what the Reestablishment is doing. I don't care that he seems to care about the citizens in his sector (also creepy). I don't care that he's possibly losing his grip on reality. I'm pretty sure he's going to turn over to the Omega's side in later installments so that he can get some kind of redemption arc, and then there might be a love triangle (BARF). I hope Juliette stays far away from him. I hope she never forgives him for the kidnapping, the simulation room, or his general desire to own her. Because women don't owe men anything, because we're not objects to be owned. Fracture Me: 75% of it was just a retelling of the end of Unravel Me, so that was unfortunate. I imagine it was a nice bonus to have while waiting for Ignite Me to come out, but I don't know how much it added to the the series. 22. Ignite Me (Shatter Me #3) - Tahereh Mafi, ★★★ So, I really wanted to like this series. I really did.  However, I was so disappointed in how it all played out. The characters were totally OOC in this installment.  I still hate Warner, I don't care what he does.  The end felt anticlimactic, though that might just be a symptom of reading too much dystopian YA novels.  Pretty unsure about there being more books, but I think a lot of people will read them. Progress: July 5, 2017 – Started Reading July 5, 2017 - 6.0% "Ughhhhhhh. 23. American Gods - Neil Gaiman, ★★★ I had pretty high expectations for this novel, as I'm a Gaiman fan and a lot of people rave about it.  However, I found myself a bit disappointed. The imagery was probably the best part, a lot of awesome scenes were set up that would be visually stunning. I enjoyed Shadow as a character, but I expected more to happen.  SPOILER: It feels like 500 pages of build up to a war that never happens. I wonder if I'm just expecting too much 'action' because of other books I've been reading.  On a completely tactile note, this edition is incredibly pleasant to read. It stays open when lying on a table, and it has nice bendy covers. I bought this years ago from Borders and it's been sitting on a shelf since. 24. Wives of War - Soraya Lane, ★★★ I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Lane does a very interesting job at skirting around some of the extremes of war. There are no overly gory or visceral descriptions of wounds or death and is generally light on descriptive detail in general. People are explained in detail, (nearly everyone is very pretty or very handsome) and an occasional location will also be described. I actually prefer less description, but I could see that others may find it lacking.  This novel is very much about emotions, and considering the subject matter, it makes sense. I found myself wanting less telling and more showing in some cases. What I did find very interesting is the gender politics that were in play. WWII is a fascinating time to explore it, what was expected of our three main 'girls,' how they either defied or followed them, and what it meant after the war was over. It gets a little schmaltzy sometimes, but I'm willing to forgive that. SPOILERS: The Thomas situation is very difficult, considering PTSD wasn't 'a thing' yet, but they did acknowledge combat neurosis. But it pained me to see Scarlet battered, and still feel that she couldn't leave, that she was required to stay with him. And for Thomas's life to come to such a tragic end. It was hard to read, but also expected. And they totally say The Thing at the end. Progress: July 24, 2017 – Started Reading July 28, 2017 – Finished Reading
25. The Special Power of Restoring Lost Things - Courtney Elizabeth Mauk, ★★ I'm not really sure what to say beyond that I just didn't like it. It's possible I would have liked it more if I had read it before Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng (they have similar plots, but beyond that, they have little in common).  I didn't like any of the characters, though I did feel some empathy towards Drew and Ben. Carol was completely unlikable, though perhaps that was the point? I certainly don't understand her actions. I found myself wishing I knew more about Jennifer, maybe it would justify the reactions of her family more.  It is a very quick read, though. 26. Fearless Fourteen (Stephanie Plum #14) - Janet Evanovich, ★★★ I still keep expecting Stephanie (and Lula?) to get better at their jobs.  Adding the kid in to this novel was a nice change, glad to see Mooner back too, even though Stephanie is judges them very harshly.  I'm mostly reading these to get caught back up on my reading goal. They're easy to read and mostly amusing. Progress: August 2, 2017 – Started Reading August 2, 2017 – page 8 "I was excited to get back to these novels, but less than 10 pages in and Stephanie is hardcore judging a kid for having piercings. 27. Finger Lickin’ Fifteen (Stephanie Plum #15) - Janet Evanovich, ★★★ I mostly didn't care about the story in this one. Relatively anticlimactic ending. Progress: August 4, 2017 – Started Reading August 6, 2017 – Finished Reading
28. Sizzling Sixteen (Stephanie Plum #16) - Janet Evanovich, ★★★ I liked this one a bit more than the last few, it was sort of nice to have Vinnie around again (even though he's pretty terrible). 29. Smoking Seventeen (Stephanie Plum #17) - Janet Evanovich, ★★★ I'm getting too used to reading Plum novels, and I'm figuring them out too early. Enjoyable enough, though there are a few things that are starting to get on me. Glad she finally hooked up with Ranger again. Real tired of the, "I love two men, isn't that just *ca-raaazyyy*" idea. 31. Word By Word: The Secret Life of Dictionaries - Kory Stamper, ★★★★ Even though this took me ages to get through, I really enjoyed it. I've been getting the M-W Word of The Day email for years and was very excited when they announced this book.  It definitely helped me realize that the dictionary is not the final say on English, but just a record of how we use it. The bit on dialect is my favorite (and would have gladly read more about it!), followed closely by the discussion of 'nude'.  I certainly have a better appreciation of dictionaries and lexicographers. 32. Explosive Eighteen (Stephanie Plum #18) - Janet Evanovich, ★★ While I appreciate the change in narrative structure (slowly presenting information instead of all at once), it's still a Plum novel and feels a little bit out of touch.  Poor Lula deserves more than a caricature characterization. I want to know more about Connie. The love triangle is getting old, mostly because Stephanie is stuck in some pretty outdated notions of how her life is supposed to be.  It could be said that I'm rather liberal, and I'm looking into too much, but Lula can be more than just a former ho. Stop describing her outfits with such disdain. I just... expect more from a book published in 2011. Progress: September 19, 2017 – Started Reading September 27, 2017 – Shelved
33. Little Fires Everywhere - Celeste Ng, ★★★★★ My. Heart.  Ng is a truly gifted storyteller. 34. The Dark Prophecy (The Trials of Apollo #2) - Rick Riordan, ★★★★ Though Apollo is super annoying (on purpose, I assume) and there wasn't enough of Nico DiAngelo, my Sweet Baby Death Prince (aka, no appearance and only a single mention), I enjoyed this. I love Leo, and I'm warming up to Calypso. I find Meg very interesting, especially because she doesn't fall into 'girly' stereotypes, SPOILERS also her dealing with the abuse from her stepfather is an important thing for novels to address. However, I'm all about the Waystation. I want an entire series about it, and its inhabitants and the travelers passing through.  And as cheesy as it sounds, my favorite part of all of Riordan's series is how he reps families of all types. <3 Progress: October 3, 2017 – Started Reading October 7, 2017 – Finished Reading

36. Young Jane Young - Gabrielle Zevin, ★★★★ Though lacking the emotional gut-punch of A.J. Fikry, this was still an excellent novel.  SPOILERS: I think what I really took away from this was the severe inequity between men and women. Jane's career was destroyed completely, while the Senator went on, with barely a blip. Obviously this is very reflective of our society, which is all too apparent these days, and it's one of those things that gets me in the heart.  I know life isn't fair, but damn. 37. Takedown Twenty (Stephanie Plum #20) - Janet Evanovich, ★★★ I don't know why I keep doing this to myself.  This one seemed a little bit less problematic at the beginning, and then just went off the rails with the racist stereotypes and constant slut shaming. 38. Warcross (Warcross #1) - Marie Lu, ★★★★ Well hello Marie Lu, why haven't I read your novels before?!  Warcross is like an amalgamation of Ready Player One and Quidditch with the added bonus of POC characters and a female MC (awww yeaaaahhhh). 39. Sourdough - Robin Sloan, ★★★★ Confession: I love stuff about San Francisco, and this was no exception. It was a little weird and a little magical, very much like the city herself.  Though I guess this technically took place in more than just SF proper. However, the descriptions of Clement St, took me right back there and made me wish I could stop and get some Pad Thai from King of Thai Noodle House #2 and a Genki strawberry and nutella crepe. ::sigh:: Memories.  It also made me want to learn how to bake bread. I think what I enjoy most about Sloan's writing is that I'm not quite sure what I'm about to get into, but I'll believe it when I'm there. 40. La Belle Sauvage (The Book Of Dust #1) - Philip Pullman, ★★★★ I am a HUGE fan of the original trilogy, and I was scared/excited to learn that Pullman was going to return to this world with more novels.  I was not disappointed. A likable new MC (::cough:: UnlikeLyra ::cough::), adventures, mystery, a little bit of terror, and a few hints about Dust!  I likely should have re-read the original trilogy before I read this, but honestly I didn't have the patience. 41. Voyager (Outlander #3) - Diana Gabaldon, ★★★★ Oh man, what a long read... I found this one much more interesting than the first two, maybe because it was a more complex story. The jumping around of POVs is a bit distracting, as it takes a bit to realize who is talking at the beginning of each bit. But I managed to breeze through this a bit easier than I thought I would, considering how much I struggled through the second one. Bring on more Jamie Fraser, please. 42. Feedback (Newsflesh #4) - Mira Grant, ★★★★ It should be said that I'm a sucker for the Newsflesh series, and would gladly read anything in the canon.  I found this to be a very good addition to the original trilogy. I like that it was way more diverse, with a lot of effort put into those differences (pronoun use!!). I wish I had re-read the trilogy before I read it, it's been a while and I found myself forgetting a lot of little things that had happened. I don't know if it diminished it, but a fresher read would have added a lot more to the story.  I think what I really appreciated is that it sounded different from the Mason's POV. Ash has a different way of forming her thoughts and sentences, and it showed.  What I didn't like so much was the over-explaining (maybe over-defending?) what it meant to be an Irwin, and to some extent a Newsie and Fictional. That might be because I have read the OG trilogy several times and I didn't feel the need to have it explained. Also, not once was Kellis-Amberlee shortened to KA, which seemed odd. This is a world steeped in a disease, and I find it hard to believe that an entire team of bloggers wouldn't shorten it, same with all of the politicians. 45. Bonfire - Krysten Ritter, ★★★★ I definitely picked this up because it's Krysten Ritter, who, in my head will always be Gia Goodman first and Jessica Jones second. And oddly enough, this felt like an amalgamation of Veronica Mars and Jessica Jones, especially in the characterization of Abby.  I ended up liking it a lot more than I thought I would, though it's not anything amazingly new. There are parts that I was less impressed with, but it was a quick read and I hope she writes more. BIG SPOILER AHEAD: I think the characters could have been fleshed out more, I found myself wanting more from Abby, more of her life in Chicago, why she feels the need to drink herself into oblivion to sleep...  A little more in the explanation would have been nice too. It felt to quick and tidy. Not to mention the very obvious 'twist.' IT'S ALWAYS THE GUY YOU CONFESS TO. Ughhhhhhh. Progress: December 4, 2017 – Started Reading December 6, 2017 – Finished Reading
46. Artemis - Andy Weir, ★★ I wanted to like this, I really did, but I found it lacking.  The storyline was good and a little different because moon stuff, but I guess I expected a lot more. I can see why a lot of people love this, and why it's ending up on a lot of 2017 best lists, it just won't be on mine. The following cut isn't really for spoilers, but just to be safe: POSSIBLE SPOILERS: I did appreciate that MC could have been a man or woman and the basic plot wouldn't change (ie the whole thing wasn't based on Jazz being a woman), HOWEVER there were a lot of bits that felt unnecessary and overly 'feminized'. I didn't believe some of her language, and some of her mental wanderings seemed really forced (when I'm in a stressful situation, I don't imagine what the dude next to me looks like while working out... "Hey, I'm a girl, it's allowed", etc). Weir has a section in the acknowledgements about the people who helped him capture a female narrator, and I think they failed him a little bit. Why is everyone overly interested in her sex life? Do people just go around commenting on how many sexual partners you have on the moon, because that's just how 'different' society is? That seems weird AF to me. Jazz gets annoyed, but it's rude and invasive. I think some of it was supposed to play on the tension between her and Svoboda, but it just seemed awkward. Progress: December 6, 2017 – Started Reading December 8, 2017 – page 94 "Struggling to enjoy this. It feels like he's trying really hard to talk like a Woman. Which is unnecessary.  It also feels like it's building up to a hull breach or fire, due to the repeated warnings of fire, and overstating of the double hull. I hope I'm wrong." December 8, 2017 – page 158 ""I was a helpless, exposed girl with no weapon" SERIOUSLY.  You can't write Jazz as a supposed badass, and then pull out that drivel. I expected more." December 8, 2017 – page 178 "That wasn't a good one, it was sexist and gross. Ugh." December 8, 2017 – Finished Reading
47. The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror (Pine Cove #3) - Christopher Moore, ★★★ Not the best of Moore's novels, hardly my favorite, but a fun read for the holidays.  It's a little bit wacky and makes me miss CA. Progress: December 23, 2017 – Started Reading December 26, 2017 – Finished Reading
48. Mrs. Fletcher - Tom Perotta, ★★★ I'm not totally sure how I feel about this novel. I've read Perrotta novels since I was in high school, and I don't think this is one of his strongest.  However there are a few things that were well done: changes of voice and capturing the 'present day'. I'm getting better at reading new novels, but this one in particular felt very *now*. It might feel dated in the future, or, hopefully, serve and example of what life is right now. Well, maybe pre-45, but I digress. It's full of current cultural and social issues, but I sort of felt like I wanted more.  And wasn't a huge fan of the ending. SPOILERS: Thank anything holy that Brendan wasn't a rapist. I thought Perrotta was leaning pretty heavily toward that, and he got dangerously close to assault. Maybe I just wasn't ready to handle it, but it would have made it so much worse. I'm not really sure how we're supposed to view Brendan. Are we supposed to feel bad that he's completely clueless about how to treat women, or are we supposed to dislike him for being totally oblivious?  I will say that a lot of the situations made me think about my own assumptions (I would definitely take the Gender and Society class that Eve took), so there's that. Progress: December 26, 2017 – Started Reading December 28, 2017 – Finished Reading

Farewell, John Paul!
Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (6th-10th March 2017)
Note to self: never get on the wrong side of James Nightingale. This week saw James left furious and devastated after discovering that John Paul had cheated on him with Ste. So, what did he decide to do? Did he shame him in the middle of the Dog? Did he throw all of his belongings out onto the street? No, he did neither of those things. Instead, he bought a car, took John Paul on a ‘romantic’ drive, confronted him about his cheating and then pushed the car off a cliff, all the while pretending that Ste was in the boot! I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m sick to death of Hollyoaks obsession with revenge, but that was pretty special!
Tumblr media
With his relationship with James over, John Paul was keen to move on with Ste and headed off to find him, only to discover him and Harry mid proposal. With a relationship with Ste now looking about as likely as the Hollyoaks annual death rate dropping below double figures, John Paul decided to leave the village and start a new life abroad. Unfortunately, Myra wasn’t so keen on the idea and almost talked him out of it until Sally gave him details of a teacher exchange programme in Singapore. As John Paul and Matthew boarded their flight, John Paul promised his son that it would just be the two of them from now on. However, John Paul hadn’t banked on receiving a text from his old flame, Craig Dean. Could McDean really be back on?!
Tumblr media
Also this week, Cleo was still struggling to come to terms with all the shit she’s had thrown at her during her time in the village and decided to take heroin. Meanwhile, Warren was desperate to find Shane and believed that Bart may hold the key to finding him. As Warren and Joel arrived at the crack den Bart was hiding out in, they were horrified to find that Cleo had overdosed and rushed her to hospital. With Joel acting incredibly shifty, and Warren continuing to ask questions about Katy’s death, it didn’t take long for him to put the dates together and realise that Joel knew more about Katy’s death than he was letting on....
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Myra’s plans to move abroad with Diego went tits up when she discovered the truth about his plan to con Frankie. Frankie was left mortified when she found out what Diego was planning and confessed all about her and Diego’s fling to Jack. Despite initially being horrified at his wife’s behaviour, Jack eventually calmed down and he and Frankie have decided to give their marriage another go. Yay! Another pleasing moment from this story was the departure of Diego, who left the village when Myra kicked him out!
Tumblr media
It was strangely quiet over at the Osborne’s this week, with Charlie and Oscar worrying over Charlie’s discovery that Nancy was ‘dying’. After getting to the bottom of what was troubling the kids, Darren and Nancy decided to come clean and explained to the boys about Nancy’s MS diagnosis. With everything now out in the open, the Osborne’s decided to live life to the full and that of course meant having a space hopper race around the village!
Tumblr media
Finally, Nick found himself in the dog house with Holly, when she discovered a video on his phone of a girl dancing provocatively for him. After deleting the video, Nick suggested that they make their own film, leaving Holly horrified. That didn’t stop her from agreeing to do it, though.
Tumblr media
5 Things we Learnt this Week:
1. Darren’s knowledge about Power Ranger’s is severely lacking.
2. If Myra’s packing is anything to go by, it would appear that you cannot buy toasters in Spain.
3. James is very generous in revenge, allowing John Paul to keep the car he’d just pushed over a cliff.
4. Don’t ask Nick to order anything for you. 5 pairs of lederhosen, becomes 50 pairs of lederhosen!
5. According to Dirk, modern romance is all ‘swiping and poking’. Is that how he pulled Cindy?
One Last Thing:
Tumblr media
Who told Frankie it was acceptable to go outside dressed like this?

For the second year in a row Williamstown Theatre Festival Associate Artistic Director Laura Savia and playwright Lucy Thurber are collaborating on a great big world premiere Community Works production. This year the title is Once Upon a Time in the Berkshires and there will be four free performance August 13-16 on the Main Stage in the ‘62 Center. Last year more than 80 local residents took part, this year the number has topped one hundred.
Director Laura Savia, the Associate Artistic Director of the Williamstown Theatre Festival
Playwright Lucy Thurber
Producer Mandy Greenfield, the Artistic Director of the Williamstown Theatre Festival
“People love a spectacle, and this show has equal amounts of fun and theatricality to provide awesome moments of joy for the audience,” Savia said. “Not only is it family friendly, but it is about the children of the Berkshires. Lucy has done a great job honoring the families of the Berkshires creating wonderful ‘meat and potatoes’ theatre scenes to fit between all the music and magic.”
In Once Upon a Time in the Berkshires, three kids ask their grandmother to tell them about a time long ago. She speaks of a world made of water, of star-crossed lovers, and of banshees. The stories come to life — warriors and magical creatures flood the stage as the tales unfold with original music and floor-pounding dance – asking the question what it really means to be a hero.
A successful playwright for more than twenty years – her 2014 play cycle The Hill Town Plays won an Obie Award – Thurber just loves the process and product of creating Community Works with Savia. “Honestly, last year’s community production of Orpheus in the Berkshires is the thing I am the most proud of in my career as a writer so far.”
Community Works has replaced the WTF’s Free Theatre productions which used to feature Equity and non-Equity actors in family-friendly outdoor shows. Both last year and this Savia and Thurber have staged their productions indoors – last year at the Greylock Works space (the former Cariddi Mill on Rt. 2 in North Adams), and now on the MainStage.
“We want people to come early, hang out on the lawn, and eat some Jack’s hot dogs!” Thurber enthused, referring to North Adams’ iconic Eagle Street vendor. “There will be music by different artists before each performance, including Kids for Harmony from Pittsfield.” Admission is free but reservations required.
Thurber and Savia came up to Berkshire County for workshops with various partner organizations throughout the year “We came up for a week every other month, for a total of 5 or six weeks. Thomas Sadoski, who appeared in Moscow Moscow Moscow Moscow Moscow Moscow, and other guest artists often came with us,” Savia explained.
“I learned how to share a brain with Laura so that we can give our cast the best, most professional theatrical experience together,” Thurber said. “We have learned to move quickly as a unit. I am the playwright, Laura is the director, and WTF Artistic Director Mandy Greenfield is the producer, but we have to be able to cover each other’s positions at a moment’s notice.”
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Interviewed about ten days before the opening, Thurber was pleased that the production was further along than she and Savia had hoped, and spoke enthusiastically of their collaborative process. “We can see the work we still have to do but with a community production rewriting takes on a different aspect than it does professionally,” she explained. “In the sections I’m not sure of, I trust that Laura will find ways to stage them without losing the focus of the play. My lines may be overwritten, or not, but she will intuit where that section is, where I am intentional and where I have left things loose for her to interpret. We are on the same page with the why and the what of this production.”
“We are well-aligned in our vision,” Savia agreed.
“Last year we learned that miracles were possible and that you can still tell a wonderful and elegant story with a large cast of people of all ages and walks of life,” Savia said. “This kind of spectacle wouldn’t be possible with a small cast.”
To engage people Savia and Thurber have collaborated with about seven different community organizations including the new Berkshire County ARC which works with people with Down Syndrome and traumatic brain injury. Transportation has been provided by the Pittsfield Public Schools, removing a significant barrier to participation for many
“I learned how much we can trust our partner organizations,” Thurber confessed. “There are many people involved last year who have returned to work with us again, which has allowed me to craft a more mature play. The group is getting to know how Laura and I work and how they work individually and corporately. The tenets of professional theatre apply to newcomers as well as more experienced participants.”
“Our lead partner is Berkshire Community College and Megan Whilden, the Executive Director of the Osher Life-Long Learning Institute (OLLI) based there, Savia explained. “I call Megan the Fairy Godmother of Community Work. As a result of her many successful years running the Pittsfield Cultural Development Office, and now working at OLLI, she knows everyone! Workshops both with both BCC and OLLI students have created a really helpful dialogue between the generations.”
“Being in the mill space last year was magical, but it was really important to all of us to institutionalize Community Works and have the production in the ’62 Center this year,” Thurber explained. “It is a significant part of the Festival and Mandy wanted it on the MainStage. We have a full design team and luckily the set for Legendary Romance (running on the MainStage through August 20) is very open so our set fits right in. We are really excited and trilled to make this as big a part of the WTF season as possible.”
“And because we are rehearsing on campus and at the Williams Inn, our other artists are stopping by rehearsals, connecting with our cast, who in turn go to see their new friends in our productions,” Savia said. “It’s a real cross-pollination.”
“We want to move Community Works forward in the coming years,” Thurber said. “We want to offer more opportunities to cross-pollinate and become more and more a part of the WTF – just as important a part as any MainStage show.”
The Williamstown Theatre Festival Community Works presents Once Upon a Time in the Berkshires by Lucy Thurber directed by Laura Savia with a cast of more than 100 local folks!
August 13, 14 & 16 at 7 pm August 15 at 2 pm
