man people really hate that orym still gets sad about his husband and father being murdered huh
not only is healing not linear and one’s progress shouldn’t be compared to someone else’s, but orym is actively in a situation that is bringing up that trauma and grief again and again, and you just want him to ignore that? to never talk about it??
like, I’ve been really stressed out lately in a way that’s bringing up a lot of old, tough memories and just a *smell* started to trigger a spiral, but you want orym to be perfectly reasonable when he’s dealing with the organization that killed his family, friends, and coworkers???
I also think that some of you just don’t like that Liam’s narration style utilizes a lot of imagery and parallels, because I’ve seen takes that are like ‘liam narrating orym being reminded of laudna’s past as she plays with her puppets shows that he doesn’t view laudna as a full person’ and ‘orym telling laudna that she has more love than delilah and that she deserves to live outside of delilah’s shadow means that he is incapable of viewing her beyond her history with delilah’—and with the latter take specifically: literally no? what? the whole recent arc has been laudna struggling to do that herself? how is orym trying to combat that view reinforcing it?
marisha frequently evokes delilah imagery in her narration of laudna and we all agree that it rules, so why is it suddenly Problematic that orym also thinks about these parallels? hot take I guess but I think it’s cool actually that liam pays attention to how his friend describes her character and has his own character engage with it.
#I think liam’s narration is great for orym bc he’s a quiet character but if that’s not your thing cool!#but like don’t you see what he’s trying to do on a technical level?#he’s not pointing it out bc orym hates it he’s pointing it out bc he’s signaling how orym notices and remembers and cares#the stress may not be helping my impulse control 😬#but also I cannot believe that people are still taking orym in such bad faith 100+ episodes in and I’m tiiirrrred#eve talks#critical role#orym of the air ashari

I'm trying out another kindle unlimited author, recommended by a friend from school, and currently I am halfway through the first book of a trilogy trying to process "why don't I care about this protagonist" into something actually halfway analytical.
I think there's SOMETHING there about the difference between a powerless character (fine and cool) vs a passive one (hard for me to get invested). Even or especially if the character has the power to DO very little, I think creators need to show them caring about things! Making judgments! Having internal lines drawn or goals their limited choices are driven by!
But this MAY just be my definite personal bias toward liking characters who enter the scene with strong moral convictions.
#'young woman in over her head plunged into a dangerous system she can't control' covers so much ground#many of them i love#many of them leave me cold#i think... i think even when the protagonist is powerless for much of the story you have to show them making moral choices#even if those choices only affect THEM e.g. cinderella#katniss is both dour and powerless much of the time but we see her character shine through by her active reactions to things#volunteering of course. but also caring about the avox girl. liking cinna. sharing things with peeta#we see her principles in her inner monologue and we see her try to be true to them. we also see her responses to kindness!#and then my girl pet who is also VERY powerless in her first book especially#but never passive#she is poking and prodding. she's making tea and coffee as a deliberate tactic to get what she wants#she's looking for the good in these people while also making her own moral judgments and acting on them#(keeping tuatu's visit secret. getting that woman out of the house. saving tuatu in the climax of course)#or liz sharp of miss sharp's monsters. more freedom than the first two but still on this list because she is Making Moral Judgments#she's not being batted about by her society OR just acting on impulse she is taking in what happens to her and responding#according to her own convictions. so we get to KNOW her early#this particular protagonist so far is just#bad things have happened to her. she feels bad. she made one (1) choice to surrender her freedom for the people she loves (good!)#now she has no follow-up steps to that. she is a passenger in the plot. she has ALSO not engaged in critical reflection about anything#she could be stunned into apathy by the Bad Things (dead parents. betrayal. betrayal 2) but i'm not getting that from her either!#there is SO much going on in your life girl why are you just coasting#i have seen you be responsible for a few chapters and then you just kinda stopped#i haven't really seen you be kind OR clever since then so what was even the point of putting you in a position of weakness

Something something the first thing Arligan Zey does when he finds out that ARCs who want to desert get fucking assassinated by black ops hit squads (or perhaps fails to find definitive proof that it ISNT happening) is tell Maze that if he wants to leave Zey will get him the resources to do so.
Like. Yea man I'm normal.
#something something KT is highly Jedi Critical but she also really does give them a level of humanity.#that somehow TCW doesn't manage except - Ironically - in some of the Windu episodes.#Like obviously they are two Very Different Genres aimed at Very Different groups of people.#but yea Zey feels trapped by his position and doesn't see a way of improving anything on a grand scale#but he will still instantly offer to help Maze desert once he understands the situation. and that's compelling to me#idk maybe I'm reading too much into it but like. the way of saying yea the Jedi are ignoring a lot and their values are being eroded-#and there is no exuse - but at the same time they are still Jedi and they do still fundamentally want to HELP#at this point Ill take KTs Jedi who feel like they have no option but to comply with fucked up political machinations outside their control#Over the TCW refusal to engage with the darker themes any day.#jo reads#true colours

My biggest issue in Epic the Musical is Odysseus, actually. In this essay, I will....
#good god I hate his (lack of) character arc#if you want me to believe he is a monster then he gotta be consistently!!!! monstrous!!!#but no he is constantly allowed to be a poor pissbaby because portraying him as anything *gasp* morally dubious is bad#idk i don't know anything about the og myths but to me Epic's Odysseus bounces around between moods far too fast but he is always allowed t#reset back into what he has been from the start#none of his angst feels earned at any point because basically all the “bad choices” he's been put into have been outside of his control#except maiming the sirens and sacrificing people to scylla#which feel so out of character at that point to me because the next song he's whining to Zeus to not make him choose between him and his me#bitch if you were willing to sacrifice them two seconds ago why not now#why not have odysseus be the one to suggest sacrificing his men instead of him to show how far he is actually willing to go#but noooo his hand needs to be forced because???#at that point in the musical I feel like he should've been far more cruel so the Ithaca saga will actually feel like something#gives this man some agency to be a fucked up guy by himself. please.#it would've made the poseidon fight even more satisfying. he's capable because he has grown so cold. but no#idk maybe I'm missing the point but ugh#I saw a great comment unrelated to this that was like#“if you aren't comfortable with dark implications in your stories then don't write dark stories”#which I feel like applies here so well#epic the musical critical

ohhhh. you think that mr reed was intended to be making valid points! it's okay I'll explain it in easier terms for you even though the film itself did it at least 20 times: mr reed is the bad guy :( and he thinks he's very very smart but he's actually not!! he just pretends! so when he makes a point, it's meant to be a shallow one! a strawman! we, the audience, are NOT meant to think it's a good one!! we're meant to think he's not making sense or that he's cherry picking, ok? sometimes, when he does make a half decent point, it's gonna be one that's already been said a million times before because he's a hypocrite and also steals other people's thoughts! ok, good job, I hope that helped you understand <3
#its so funny the number one criticism im seeing on here is that mr reed is making DUMB or OBVIOUS arguments. thats the point brother.#the point is he is an insane man who thinks that hes a very smart man and therefore he has control over vulnerable women.#so any points he makes you are not meant to agree with or think are valid and good ones!#heretic#captain's log

#shout out to me for being an insufferable loud mouth in my group therapy class for over controlled losers#which is funny bc 1) i used to b extremely extremely shy and afraid of speaking to ppl and 2) bc im probably a normal amount of talkative#now lol. but in this class. its a class setting but im not getting a grade and the material isnt beyond my compression and psychology is a#soft science so i can argue back on things and not b objectivly wrong. so im like fuck it im gonna b annoying bc there r no consequences#except ppl thinking im annoying and like why tf would i care. i only see these ppl in this specific setting#and they have no authority over me and also they're annoying too bc they have similar issues to me but different. and there r archetypes.#like some ppl get real caught up on the rules and terminology of the material and im like ugh ur missing the point. the details dont fucking#matter. just think abt how u can use the idea. or some ppl r like really judgy and think theyre right abt things and im like. ugh. u sound#so insufferable. shut the fuck up. or some ppl r just extremely quiet and blank faced and just giving u nothing u have to carry the whole#conversation to make up for their lack of input. and i dont mean that in a bad way. i think everyone has the right to b annoying. i still#like them. so im like. well fuck it. i can b annoying too. so my annoying things r that im very padantic about the examples that our#instructors give. like: that doesn't fit with what u just said. or this is why i disagree with the idea. or actually i already do this thing#were learning today. which like. if i was an instructor. at least id b glad me as a student was engaging seriously with the materials#and is hopefully clarifying aspects of things. im told im good at conceptualizing things into metaphor.#whatever. i dont care. i mean. i feel intolerable but like also im not gonna stop bc who gives a fuck#also everytime they talk abt evolution stuff or data from studies im very suspicious. like show me how the fuck they quantified the number#of expressions the human face can make. show me the fucking data bc u cant fucking tell me its not an infinite number if u consider every#varied muscle movement in every combination. and its apparently very obvious when im disagreeing bc i make a face#which one of the instructors tried to prement my comments today but i was critical from a different perspective than she thought lol#anyway. shout of to being insufferable. as fucking lyrics from jc superstar wrattle endlessly through the empty caverns of my mind#i fucking love that musical. its rocketed up to like number 3 position. i lov musicals so much#bc im cringe and i don't give a fuck#unrelated

can’t believe that dean selling his soul for sam (making him feel the same guilt dean felt from john’s deal) inadvertently led to dean breaking the first seal (and confirming his sadism which explains a lot), kick starting the apocalypse (which dean blamed on sam even though they both wanted to kill lilith and didn’t know would release lucifer), leading to sam throwing himself into hell for an eternity of torture by the devil to right his “wrong”, all the while thinking he deserved it because dean never told him he didn’t, only that sam wasn’t strong enough
on top of all the other things that dean did/said to sam that sam would constantly be bringing up during arguments if he wasn’t as kind and wasn’t gaslit into believing they were his fault. instead sam holds dean’s hand and tries (and fails) to explain that often dean (convincing himself that he’s) helping people actually hurts them
#spn#sam winchester#dean critical#some of these things are the result of them being puppets for heaven/hell#which is out of their control but the point is they both are aware of that

~Earthspark spoilers~
So there was a lot I didn't like about Season 2 (batch 1) . . . but I do want to mention something that I've seen a lot of negative "discourse" about that I actually didn't have a problem with: Aftermath and Spitfire being inherently troublesome from the moment of their creation.
There's been this ongoing trend in internet media criticism to look at everything through a lens of realism. I've even seen a few people complaining about Robbie and Mo being in dangerous situations, like they're real children. But they aren't. They are fictional characters who exist so that real children can have fun imagining that they, too, can fight bad guys alongside their cool robot friends.
The Chaos Terrans are fictional robots created by a mystic artifact, an artifact that was fractured and malfunctioning when they were 'born'. I am not worried that kids will extrapolate that real children--who are not robots and not created by mystical artifacts--can be born evil based on seeing a cartoon using the very common Evil Clone trope. Please give children some credit.
Predacons and Maximals were created very similarly in Beast Wars. Any time a Maximal protoform pod crashed, BW Megatron & Co would try to reprogram it into a Predacon, and if they succeeded then the new character would instantly join their faction and start burning the surrounding forest with a flamethrower or whatever. It's a conceit to hurry the new character into the plot, because it would be extremely boring if every new Beast Wars character spent three episodes philosophizing and studying Cybertronian history before choosing a side.
The goal of fiction is not to perfectly mimic reality.
#earthspark#media criticism#spoilers#Spitfire#Aftermath#Terrans#Beast Wars#being a Predacon in BW didn't meant characters didn't have free will#like it wasn't mind control#and characters could switch sides#but when Dinobot or Blackarachnia joined the Maximals#their programming was still Predacon.#at one point Rhinox gets 'turned into' a Predacon#and after he's back to being a Maximal#he says Predacon programming is like 'three gigs of attitude on a two gig hard drive'

Genuinely can't understand how people can legitimately say "trying to argue that Crests are powerful and useful and writing Crests as being powerful and useful proves Edelgard right about how people wrongfully fixate on them" when Edelgard herself says she thinks she can only use her signature heavy armor because of Crests (study requests), and when she herself uses a Relic that was made specifically to be compatible with her twin Crests to use in fighting. Nearly her entire visual language as a character relies on her using her Crests, so the people trying to argue this just kinda point out how hypocritical she is lmao
#anti edelgard#anti-edelgard#edelgard critical#edelgard discourse#just to be safe#like we been knew she was but thanks for pointing out one of the biggest examples of that lmao#it's like. you can't simultaneously argue that Crests shouldn't be seen as important or valued to society and that no one needs them#and then go on to try to fundamentally change society by means only available through Crests#EDELGARD disproves her own (supposed) point about Crests being unnecessary more than anyone else does#she can't just turn off her Crests but she can control how she fights#she didn't need to specifically use heavy armor or specifically use Aymr. and yet she does. very readily#she fights in ways that SHE ADMITS are only possible for her because of Crests. but no one needs Crests. except for her. conveniently#like how is this flying over Edelstans' heads lmao. absolute experts at making Edelgard look morally worse than she already does I swear

why is this giving i think i need to put you down vibes
#please tell me i’m just reading too into it#cause this was like when orym and fearne were discussing plan b for imogen in case she lost the plot#but now laudna is losing the plot#and imogen is realizing it#because delilah is holding more weight in laudna’s head than the rest of the hells#so at some point delilah is going to have control#and they’re going to have to take laudna out#but i’m hoping i’m wrong#and it doesn’t come to that#but with how orym reacted#he is ready#he has said he has been ready to do it#critical role#cr spoilers#critical role spoilers#ok#i think i did read too much into it#it could just be concern of imogen possibly losing laudna to delilah#but the outcome would still be having to put her down#FUUUCK

how did dorym nation go from winning so hard to losing so hard in the span of 2 episodes....MAKE IT MAKE SENSE 😭😭😭
I. KNOW. i just keep thinking about how things would be different if dorian had been able to stay or pop in or even just if the sending stones worked. i think there's going to be so much pain and frustration and anger from dorian not necessarily with orym but like. i keep thinking about "no debts between us". and how whether it's internal and how orym is built or because watching the hells lately has put so much weight and responsibility on his shoulders, he's gotten to feel so indebted or something like that so as to make a deal essentially signing away his future with a hag to make up for it. but then there's an empathy there that i don't know the rest of the hells will quite have because dorian made a deal with a betrayer god to keep the crown keepers safe. they're cut from such a similar cloth in that way that i just wonder what kind of... warnings? dorian might have been able to pick up on that have slipped through the cracks without him because orym's been written off as the most stable one of the hells. i just. need to know how dorian is going to react.
#sorry it took me so long to respond! ive been on a family trip for about a week and have had no time to have coherent thoughts#i think that dorian will just be able to read orym like a book before they even get a moment alone to catch up#i don't mean to write the rest of the hells off esp fearne but orym is missing his most fierce defender and i just wonder#i don't think he would have/could Fix Him™️. but i just really wonder what damage control? he might have been able to do along the way#before orym got to the point#idk if this makes sense or means anything i've just been rotating the dorym intricacies of it all around in my brain for days#dorym#orym of the air ashari#dorian storm#critical role#bell's hells

just finished Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, and it is a game written by cowards for cowards.
the final twist genuinely ruins the game. it's so stupid as a narrative decision. i hate it so much. it almost makes me understand what the people yelling about The Last Jedi being too subservient to its themes were yelling about (OBVIOUSLY not the ones that were being bigoted and loud and wrong about it, but just the ones who had actual issues with its narrative directions/execution). genuinely, the twist takes what could have been an extremely solid 8.5, maybe a 9/10 game down to a 4/10 game with nothing of interest to say deluding itself into thinking it's saying anything of worth by thoughtlessly repeating patterns as if that's supposed to generate meaning without any real effort of actually committing to that meaning, or seeing the world as anything beyond its basic binary worldview of Good and Bad.
putting that twist in fundamentally cuts the legs out from any actual, interesting and substantive critique it could have leveled at the legal system and our feelings about people on trial and their perceived guilt or innocence, and it just ends up reinforcing it as a power of good that Will Ultimately Prevail In The Search For Truth, as if that is even remotely a thing any legal system is concerned with, especially the one in the game that mostly just stumbles into The Right Choices because it's a game controlled by the player. it's frankly ideologically incoherent to the point of saying nothing because its critique is unfocused and toothless. best it can muster is "maybe some people are corrupt and lying, but if You take Advantage of The System, you can beat them" as if malicious compliance is supposed to change the system. fuck off.
ran out of tags but. i'm serious about this lol, i really hate it as a narrative and ideological choice. the game threatens to say something bold and interesting and then just pulls the rug out from underneath you. it sucks. it's very much like 12 Angry Men in that way, i think, except at least that movie Knows what it's saying and that its basic premise is its ideological downfall, this just doesn't really feel like it says anything much interesting or coherent, ultimately, because the criticism either drowns in the length and comedic nature of it, or just ultimately isn't focused and pointed and nuanced enough to actually say something meaningful. like ik someone's gonna do a "kid's game" thing but hello, kid's shit has always been nuanced and just bc it's "for kids" doesn't mean it has to abide by some binary ass morality that flattens all its interesting critique, especially when you're constantly led, structurally, to the more interesting and nuanced narrative choice only to have a twist completely ruin it and making it all feel like a waste of your time. plenty of things are nuanced and interesting and "for kids" without deflating their themes and messages by writing a stupid twist that undercuts the interesting parts of its arguments.
#james talks#people will probably be mad about this one but i'm Wright about it. Phoenix Wright.#sorry. had to be done. making up for the lack of pun names and jokes in the last case.#anyway i'm so serious when i say it's a cowardly narrative direction that just completely undercuts the whole fucking point—#it was trying to make about the ways the legal systems of Japan are set up to encourage only closing cases by any means necessary#like it just literally doesn't make even half the point bc guess what? Ema just isn't actually responsible.#so you don't have to have any remotely complicated feelings about the justice system. it WILL get the perpetrators at the end.#Edgeworth? didn't do it. Ema? didn't do it. you don't ever have to have complicated feelings about working with people.#sorry i just REALLY fucking hate this choice so immensely i am more filled with rage the more i think about it#apparently this is a actual tag so.#Ace Attorney critical#resisting tagging this with the main game tag bc i don't wanna hear spoilers for the other games.#or hear annoying fans bitching about my correct take in my asks.#in case it wasn't obvious i am serious about the take but i am also still processing.#probably have slightly more nuanced thoughts when i've heard more opinions from other people and seen their takes.#i already know someone's gonna make some bullshit argument about believing in the good in people and how that makes sense but.#getting a charge of guilty literally is a failstate in this. your client and associates can never Actually Be Guilty of anything—#besides some light corruption. the twist about Lana not being a murderer is fine. it works bc it's clever.#but Ema not being a murderer is shit bc it completely ruins the promise the whole thing sets up. like sure Lana still goes to prison at—#the end but we can't dwell on that at all or feel anything but happy bc it's the last note of the game. so they have to make Ema not guilty#did it ever cross their minds they could've bonded again in prison?#like if you're sending Lana to prison anyway. just send Ema in with her. she can still be guilty of the thing and you can actually make—#more interesting critique of the system as abusing people who have no other choice instead of them—#Being Wronged Through No Fault Of Their Own as if they're innocent little toddlers with no control of anything. like with Edgeworth that—#narrative choice was more acceptable bc he was like 9 years old. Ema was 14. what the fuck are we talking about.#i'm not saying being 14 means she should hang or whatever like she was still a teen but they could've written her to be guilty—#but not A Murderer in a million different ways and they chose the most annoying and cowardly path bc—#it promises to be interesting and nuanced and then just completely flips you off right at the finish line—#as if your interest in its commentary and what it Wants To Say was too much investment as if they didn't spend 80% of the game doing that#by making you commit crimes to save people (Phoenix admits lawyers aren't supposed to investigate so 90% of the evidence is illegal)

Krafton truly knows how to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, in regards to their mod rules.
#inzoi#this game needs mods DESPERATELY at this point#the player count has dropped really notably#though people were warned months ago krafton would likely ban and control mods and they wouldn't listen#I'd know cause I got dogpiled all to fuck when I tried to tell people#it's not in a playable state at all#inzoi critical
