JOHN HICKS TRIO 'I'll GIVE YOU SOMETHING TO REMEMBER ME BY' (1988)
In the late 1980s, the renowned American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger John Hicks formed one of the most influential ensembles consisting out of musicians that had played music at the highest level all their lives and gained their status as both stand-alone artists and important sidemen. Each of them had participated in many of jazz’s great moments and all shared the ability, documented on many albums, to inspire their fellow musicians to even greater heights. The ‘John Hicks Trio’ had several line-up changes over the years that included greats such as Clifford Barbaro (Strata East, Blue Note, Sun Ra Arkestra, Charles Tolliver), Clint Houston (Prestige, Nina Simone, Roy Ayers, Azar Lawrence), Ray Drummond (Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey, Lalo Schifrin), Marcus McLaurine (Muse, Verve, Weldon Irvine, Kool & The Gang) and Victor Lewis (Steve Grossman, Stan Getz, Charles Mingus, Cedar Walton, Chet Baker).
On the album we are presenting you today (I’ll Give You Something To Remember Me By from 1988) the trio consists out of some of the biggest and best players in the jazz, funk and soul scenes:
On piano we have the Atlanta based trio’s bandleader JOHN HICKS (1941-2006). He served as a leader on more than 30 albums and played as a sideman on more than 300 other recordings. After being taught piano by his mother, Hicks went on to study at Lincoln University of Missouri, Berklee College of Music, and the Julliard School. After playing with a number of different artists during the early ’60s (including Oliver Nelson and being part of Pharoah Sanders’s first band) he joined Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers in 1964. In the early ’70s he taught jazz history and improvisation at Southern Illinois University before resuming his career as a recording artist. Next to his many solo recordings for labels such as Strata East and Concord, Hicks would collaborate with all the big names in the scene, including Archie Shepp, Mingus and Alvin Queen. In 2014 & 2015, J Dilla paid homage to John Hicks by sampling two of his songs.
On drums we have the legendary IDRIS MUHAMMAD (1939-2014) who to this day is still considered as one of the most influential drummers covering a multitude of genre-transcending styles. Born in New Orleans, he showed early talent as a percussionist and began his professional career while still a teenager, playing on Fats Domino’s ‘Blueberry Hill’. He then toured with Sam Cooke and would later go on to work with Curtis Mayfield. Next to his landmark solo recordings for Prestige Records, Idris would collaborate with iconic musicians and acts from the likes of Manu Dibango, Ahmad Jamal, Melvin Sparks, Charles Earland, Walter Bishop, Ceasar Frazier, Roberta Flack, Gato Barbieri, Nathan Davis, Sonny Rollins, Lou Donaldson, Galt MacDermot, Lonnie Smith…and countless others. Idris Muhammad’s work was sampled by renowned performers such as Drake, Beastie Boys and Fatboy Slim.
On bass we have CURTIS LUNDY (born 1955) who originates from Florida. Lundy is a well-respected bass player (and a master of his instrument), choir director, arranger, composer and producer who was part of performances and recordings of renowned acts and artists such as Pharoah Sanders, Frank Morgan, Cole Porter, Chico Freeman, Khan Jamal… and many others!
On I’ll Give You Something To Remember Me By (recorded at the legendary Dutch Studio 44 in March 1987 and released on Limetree Records in 1988) the listener is treated to eight majestic tracks of the highest caliber (including an excellent Thelonious Monk cover-tune) and features a remarkable outing of advanced musicianship by three jazz-giants in their prime, delivering an inspirational gem of an album.
These recordings sound as successful, young and vibrant as ever! Expect supercharged ragtime Post Bop with striking notes, no-holds-barred musicianship, high swinging solos, screaming choruses and plenty of solid virtuosity to spare. The up tempo none stop Latin beat is complimented by the terrific drum solos of Idris Muhammad and the rhythmic bass stokes of Curtis Lundy. This electrifying set of tracks makes this release a bonafide hit and a must have for any self-respecting jazz fan or collector.
Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents the FIRST ever vinyl reissue of this classic jazz album (originally released in 1988). This reissue comes as a deluxe 180g vinyl edition (strictly limited to 500 copies worldwide) with obi strip…also present are the exclusive pictures shot by legendary Dutch photographer Frans Schellekens (known for his work with artists such as Chet Baker, Alice Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard and Sonny Rollins). COUCH TOUR: BOBBY WATSON/Back Home in Kansas City album release, with Wallace Roney Jr, Jordan Williams, Curtis Lundy, and Victor Jones, 24 MARCH 2023, 2nd set
I’m pretty sure I saw another album release with favorites Jeremy Pelt and Jordan Williams. That set introduced me to BOBBY WATSON’s wonderful tune Love Remains as well as his fine alto playing. Curtis Lundy and Victor Jones are a strong and tasty rhythm section; they know Watson very well and he knows them. But this time youth was served with Wallace Roney Jr playing a mellow rich toned trumpet and the phenomenal Jordan Williams.
While it was a show case for everyone and was the fitting climax to the set, an extended The Wheel Within The Wheel (Art Blakey recommended the Biblical story of Ezekiel to Watson as a theme) gave Williams an extended introduction, a full and varied solo, and half a chorus to launch everyone else’s solos.
I am now on full alert to see him again. He swings hard and plays richly, both comping smartly for others and soloing fluidly. He hesitated before launching his introduction, putting his hands on the keys and removing them twice, which wasn’t quite a history of jazz piano, but there was ragtime/stride and bebop in there. His solo had modal elements but wasn’t particularly Tynerish, but Watson went the most out there of the night on this tune too. It also had more than modal. He is an exciting player.
Kudos too to Lundy and Jones who were meticulous pros. Jones wrote the opener, Red Bank Heist, like for Red Bank, NJ, born/Kansas City adopted, Count Basie.
So is Watson who solos fluid and writes tunes (Karita for his sister-in-law, another KC musician, and that wonderful Wheel that they all stretched out) that have extended themes and therefore intricacies. But they swing infectiously and are smart but not cerebral.
Kansas City and alma mater UMKC where Watson taught were well served.

꧁Camina conmigo ꧂

Read the full article

PHAROAH SANDERS & IDRIS MUHAMMAD ‘AFRICA’ (1987) 2XLP
Pharoah ‘Farrell’ Sanders (born 1940) is a leading figure in the world of jazz and one of the last living legends with connections to players like Sun Ra and John Coltrane. His tenor saxophone playing has earned him royal status amongst free jazz players, critics and collectors.
Originally Sanders was interested in urban blues music, but his high school teacher exposed him to jazz and this took Farrell in an entirely new direction. Once completing high school Sanders quickly packed his belongings and headed to Oakland, where he got a chance to work with musicians of high caliber such as saxophone players Sonny Simmons and Dewey Redman (who were both later to be major forces in new jazz and free jazz). Soon the young Pharoah would meet John Coltrane and would feel being attracted to the life as a professional musician. By the early sixties Sanders moved to New York where the major jazz scene was happening. Here he’d spent most his time honing his skills at rehearsals with Sun Ra….sadly he was not making much money with the Arkestra and soon found himself living on the streets, trying to stay up all night playing and then scrounging for money during the day, often selling blood to eat.
Sanders recorded his debut album for ESP soon after, but it wasn’t until he started playing with his old friend John Coltrane that he would fully unleash the fury of his saxophone on the world of free jazz. The records Pharoah Sanders played on for Coltrane laid the foundation of what was to come for both the world of free jazz and for Sanders as a musician. After Coltrane’s tragic death Sanders would record further with Alice Coltrane, John’s widow, on the album Karma (1969 – Impulse!), which is universally accepted as Sanders’ masterpiece. Along with musicians Alice Coltrane and singer Leon Thomas, Sanders helped to create the genre of spiritual jazz.
On the album we are presenting you today (Africa from 1987) Sanders plays with an all-star line-up consisting of Idris Muhammad, John Hicks and Curtis Lundy. Muhammad brings his trademark tight sense of timekeeping, but with a looseness that we love – and Lundy’s warm soulful bass does more than enough to give the set a sound bottom- all this while Hick’s free lyrical piano works nicely with Sander’s spiritual horn. The brilliant ‘Africa sessions’ features the quartet at their best…soulful but also searching for a strong groove at the same time. The music here is less ornamented than on most of Sanders’ studio recordings, where sextets, septets or larger lineups have been the norm, but this brilliant effort here remains every bit as compelling. Pharoah and his crew play with the utmost sensitivity and give a demonstration that shows us the full extent of their skills.
Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents: the official reissue of this fantastic album, back available on vinyl for the first time since 1987. Available as a deluxe 180g 2XLP set, with TWO bonus tracks from the same session that were not featured on the original vinyl release. This album is limited to 500 copies worldwide and comes with an obi strip + liner notes by American jazz critic & author Kevin Whitehead.

COUCH TOUR: BOBBY WATSON with Orrin Evans, Curtis Lundy (!), and Victor Jones, SMOKE JAZZ CLUB, 30 JULY 2022, 3rd Set
The Smoke Streams were so important to lock down, quality both in presenting solid swinging artists and in production quality. They were physically closed for remodeling but are back including the streams.
Bobby Watson’s latest recording was for their label and he appeared early in their reopening cycle. He emerged out of Kansas City (!!!) after I left town and wasn’t attending to the music. He plays alto and I am recovering from a prejudice against the instrument. But he is part of what I kept myself from. He has recently retired from the music faculty at my undergraduate alma mater, the University of Missouri—Kansas City, so that’s another reason why I shouldn’t have.
He has an appealing tone, call it fine grained sandpaper. There’s a grit but it results in a very smooth result. He’s from Kansas City so there’s a blues side that reaches back to before Charlie Parker and the opener was evocative to both seminal influences. He is fluid but patient. He has a lyrical quality that goes beyond Bird (a unique melodicist to be sure). I don’t know Benny Carter well enough to cite him, but it feels older than bop and maybe not Johnny Hodges. But maybe Johnny Hodges.
All in all, quite wonderful.
That Orrin Evans was the pianist added familiarity and fun. He approaches tunes in a modern tangential way and soloes unconventionally, but there’s an irrepressible swing and earthiness that fits in. He and Watson had some fruitful conversations that brimmed with invention from both of them.
On the other hand, Curtis Lundy is an old ally of Watson’s and he was an insistent pulse. He was busier than Watson, but that bed made Watson’s restraint over it informed by that tension. He was funky and driving on Watson’s Beatitudes which was both a groove and reverential. Not too reverential as Watson hinted at a pop song (and, as a melodicist, he hears and expresses melodic connections often). Victor Jones is another Watson mainstay and he contributed crisp support to one and all.
The opener was Parkerish, if not an actual composition of Bird himself. It was a fine way for the band to settle in to their well established roles. Though they probably didn’t need much settling as this was the third set from Saturday night (so is it a Couch Tour if it’s not live but within the 24 streaming window? This time, I vote yes.), as such it was agonizingly short (an hour in toto but they didn’t really start until the 14 minute mark (do I get the early set on the thought they start on time and play for the hour? Given the choice, I went late for a relaxed feel that might stretch things out.).
The ballads were what grabbed me. Someone To Watch Over Me emerged from Watson and Evans exploring it each in their own way. But the gem was Watson’s Love Remains which is just a stunning line. Both though explored the creative tensions I hear in Watson’s playing; Parker and beyond, yet an older aesthetic, a pleasant roughness in the service of these melodic instincts.
They closed with In Case You Missed It which featured Evans dancing over Lundy and Jones to set up Watson, both for his own steps and then a bit of a pas de deux with the piano.
I programmed a Watson blues as part of a set of KC blues for WGTE’s Jazz Spectrum in honor of my sister as part of her bucket list trip to our old hometown. I will savor his Love Remains and mine the catalog in search of other treasures.
