Fast-food restaurants are always the quick choice for exhausted students after learning a lesson.

Today, WHAM Burger near St. Louis University is bustling with customers, mostly college students from the university. The aroma of sizzling burgers and the familiar hum of conversations fill the air.

Inside the restaurant, everyone stands in line at the cashier or fiddles with the self-order machine. Even the drive-thru is buzzing with activity. Most cars have to wait, but for Bucky, who is behind the wheel, the wait is inconsequential. However, his friends, Steve and Sam, seem less patient.

“Their double cheeseburgers are delicious. But eating them three times a week? I'm going to hate my favorite food, Bucky,” Steve remarks from the back seat.

Bucky rolls his eyes. “There are other choices, like salads.”

Sam laughs, fingers dancing on his phone screen. “You'd have to put a gun to Steve's head if you want him to eat a salad.”

Bucky chuckles, his eyes focused on the road. Sam and Steve sigh, observing their friend who has become a love fool. Almost every week, they find themselves at this fast-food haven. There's a particular reason Bucky insists on coming here.

Finally, their car inches forward to the cashier's window. Bucky rolls down the window and is greeted by a familiar face.

“Welcome to WHAM Burger. Oh, hi, guys!” Your bright voice cuts through the air, and the trio of friends can't help but smile.

“Hi, Y/N,” Sam and Steve chime in, well aware that Bucky becomes speechless when he sees you.

You flash them a genuine smile, recognizing the familiar faces. Your fingers swiftly input their usual order. “You guys just got back from the chess club?”

Bucky nods, attempting to say more but finding his words stuck. He never anticipated becoming a lovefool, but he fell for you the first time he laid eyes on you.

It was on a snowy day when Bucky first saw you. A girl, squatting down to rescue a stray cat. That quiet moment led to him forgetting his chess tournament appointment, instead accompanying you to the nearby shelter.

You, a stranger in the area, had just landed a part-time job at the fast-food joint. Bucky admired your selflessness and love for animals. Even though you couldn't adopt the cat, he assured you someone would. In gratitude, you treated him to hot chocolate, and in that instant, Bucky fell in love.

However, his friends later shattered his newfound joy, revealing that you had a boyfriend, the quarterback, Lloyd Hansen, and that you were childhood sweethearts.

Back in the present, your cheerful voice snaps Bucky out of his reminiscence. “Thank you so much. Please come again.”

“Yes, yes, I will,” Bucky mumbles, grabbing the card from your hand. The slight touch sends a jolt through him, and he can't help feeling like a creep.

As Bucky drives away from the drive-thru, Sam and Steve enjoy their fries, teasing Bucky about moving on.

“Dude, you need to move on. If not, both of us are going to gain weight,” Steve says, munching on his cheeseburger.

Bucky rolls his eyes. "I didn't invite you." Despite not being explicitly invited, the three always go home together since they live in the same apartment building, and WHAM Burger is conveniently on the way.

Bucky huffs, but he can't stay mad at them. After all, they've been his closest friends since high school. Despite their advice, he can't fathom why his feelings for you continue to grow. If there's a love cupid, Bucky can't help but blame it, as the cupid seems to have misfired its arrow onto the wrong target.

In the rearview mirror, Sam and Steve exchange knowing glances, silently hoping their friend will soon find a way to move on from his unrequited love.

Reader P.O.V

“Shit… shit.” You blame yourself for not bringing an umbrella with you, even though since the morning, you noticed the clouds had a dark color.

You protect the food bag to make sure it doesn't get wet. You had just finished your shift when your boyfriend, Lloyd, texted you to bring food to his practice.

Lloyd and you have been together since childhood, crowned as king and queen at prom night. Everyone says that both of you are a sweet couple.

Lloyd got a full scholarship for his athletics and is studying law. Meanwhile, you received half a scholarship. St. Louis is a prestigious university with famous alumni.

It has been your dream to study here, and you also want to stay with Lloyd. However, growing up, you learned to be responsible on your own, managing your own money and working.

Between studies, clubs, and part-time jobs, you and Lloyd used to be close, but now, it's getting difficult to meet. Lloyd has become busy with practices and interviews since he brought a championship to the university.

But you want to make this relationship work.

When the bus stops in front of the university, you have to run to the university gym.

You sprint as fast as you can despite the heavy rain.

Lloyd is lifting weights when he sees you soaking wet. He grabs a towel and dries your hair. “Thanks, babe. You came all the way here.”

You reply, “It's alright.”

“Has the food arrived?” A female voice is heard from behind you.

You turn around and see a girl with perfect hair, wearing a training outfit that accentuates her body curves.

You glance down at yourself still wearing your work uniform and a jacket.

Lloyd says, “Yup. Here you go,” as he hands the food bag to Nicky. She's the daughter of the university football sponsor. Lloyd have mentioned her name a few times. But everytime you hear her name, you don't feel secure.

You clench your fist, watching their interaction. Lloyd gives Nicky the food you brought with effort through this heavy rain, and Nicky shows a shy smile towards him.

Your heart sinks as you catch the subtle exchange of glances between them. The smile that Lloyd reserves for you is now being shared with someone else. It feels like a stab in the chest, a betrayal you didn't see coming.

Lloyd looks at you. “Could you wait for a while? We will go back together.”

You put on a fake smile that you've mastered at work. “No, it's alright. I came here with an Uber car. The driver is waiting for me.” You lied; your phone battery had already died.

Lloyd nods. “Alright, text me when you've arrived.”

“Okay.”

You turn and walk faster to avoid the eyes of the bystanders. You don’t want your effort to be judged.

When you get out from the building, the rain is still pouring heavily. You grit your teeth. Is this your unluckiest day?

You run faster to the bus stop while crying.

“Y/N.”

You think your ears have mistaken you. With this heavy rain, you hear someone call your name.

It's impossible.

“Y/N!”

The voice becomes clearer. You turn around and see the silhouette getting closer. He comes running while holding an umbrella.

“Bucky?”

Bucky was just walking out from the library. He was in the chess club when he saw you running from the university gym. He wonders what the heck you are doing alone in this heavy rain.

When he sees your eyes red and your nose, it seems like you've just cried. The same happened when he found out you had a boyfriend; his eyes and nose were red too.

And he sees you coming out of the gym; that means the cause is related to Lloyd.

But now he can't let you be like this. He gives you his umbrella and runs back to the library.

You are stunned while holding the umbrella. Bucky suddenly appears, giving you the umbrella, and runs away.

You try to catch up with him, but he runs too fast. You can only shout, “Bucky, thank you!”

Tomorrow, you have to say thank you to Bucky. At least today, someone cared for you. You feel gratitude and confusion at the rain-soaked bus stop. Bucky's unexpected act of kindness adds another layer to your swirling emotions.

The next day, when you went to find Bucky, he wasn't in class. Both of you studied business.

Steve told you, "Bucky got a fever, so he stayed at home." You felt guilty when you heard that because the reason why he got sick is because of last night; he gave you his umbrella.

You asked Steve, "Can I visit him?" Steve couldn't believe what he just heard, but if you came to visit Bucky, perhaps his fever would be gone in a second. "Sure, I'll give you the address," he said, raising an eyebrow in surprise.

You nodded appreciatively, saying, "Thank you," with a sincere smile.

‘Cough, cough.’

Bucky poured water into a glass. He had a fever and a sore throat because of the rain last night. The relentless downpour seemed to echo the storm within him, a storm fueled by the regret of not bringing you home with his car. He couldn't shake the thought that if he had, perhaps he wouldn't be in this sickly state.

‘Knock. Knock.’

He opened the door, never expecting to find you standing there. You held a steaming bowl of hot soup in your hands. “Bucky, I’m sorry. Because of me, you got sick.”

Bucky shyly answered, the lines of worry etched on his face. It wouldn't matter if he had to cross a sea of fire; he would do it for you. “No, it’s not because of you.” He grabbed the food you brought, appreciating the warmth it brought, both physically and emotionally. “Thank you. You didn’t have to do this.”

You shook your head, a genuine smile gracing your face. “You really helped me last night. Thank you.”

Feeling restless and vulnerable in his weakened state, Bucky looked at you nervously and said, “I have something to tell you.”

I want to go to Ohio next April to view the total solar eclipse, but I haven't booked a hotel yet because I haven't finalized my itinerary. This was a mistake, because every single hotel in the city I was planning to visit is already booked solid. I wouldn't be surprised if every hotel in the path of totality is booked. I'll have to look for one a few hours away.

Columbus and Cincinnati are probably booked up, so maybe I'll try Louisville or Lexington down in Kentucky, or Detroit up in Michigan. Or maybe I should avoid big cities all together and look for a hotel in a small town instead.

Before I finalize anything, I want to know if any of my mutuals are planning on coming out for the eclipse. I've been banking on Ohio this whole time because it's a straight shot up the I-75 from where I'll be at, and I wanted to visit the Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta (Neil's childhood home, directly in the path of totality), but I'm willing to travel anywhere in the path

Mutuals, if you guys live in or near this grey band or are planning to travel there on April 8, 2024, let me know if you want to meet up. I was planning a big road trip up from Florida, with tentative stops at amusement parks along the way (Six Flags Over Georgia, Dollywood, King's Island, maybe Cedar Point or Hersheypark because I don't know the next time I'll be up north, so I may as well cast a wide net).

My car can fit four comfortably (and I do mean comfortably, it's big, lots of leg room), five max, so if anyone wants to fly out I can pick you up and we can carpool/caravan.

This is my tentative route from Gainesville on up, but I'm willing to deviate. I could take the I-10 west to Texas instead, or I could overshoot the path and meet up in Detroit or Chicago or as far out as St Louis.

It doesn't matter where I end up just so long as it's in the path of totality; come hell or high water I am going to see this eclipse.

If enough people are interested, I'll set up a discord server so we can all talk together and finalize our plans by committee. I'll leave this pinned until August 1st, and if there are no takers I'll go with my original plan; head out in late March, hit up Six Flags, visit the Smokeys for a couple days, mull around in Kentucky or Ohio until the eclipse, afterwards maybe head east to Pennsylvania, maybe visit some Civil War sites, maybe visit some relatives in the DC area, definitely hit up Dollywood on the way back (besides the eclipse, the theme parks are my main focus; hitting Six Flags and Dollywood both on the way up would be exhausting, so one up and one down works perfect)

This is a major undertaking, a trip of a lifetime for me, so I want to make it special. Spending a week with friends would be nice, before, during or after the eclipse, whatever boats your float.

Once I know who all I'm dealing with, then I'll start booking rooms and buying tickets. I want to explore, I want to see the country, I want to have a real tourist vacation experience (I've been on the customer service end of things for too long, I need a break).

Old, incomplete and unbeta’ed WIP (Rebelcaptain Zombie Apocalypse):

D - NNER, Cassian looks at the missing I-shaped red neon blinking loudly in the windless night.

Inside, there’s only one patron reading a newspaper, apparently waiting for his coffee to get cold before asking for another one. The waitress seems annoyed and bored, she doodles on white napkin waiting for the man to raise his hand for more coffee.

Her name is Jyn. Cassian knows because she has a little tag with her name on it. He knows because she has big green eyes and a charming smile, one she doesn't give very often.

Cassian knows because he just asked her for a coffee to go when he could very well make one at his place.

He knows because this is the best place to meet his clients.

And he wanted to drive a bit, he needed cigarettes too.

Cassian bites the end of one to get it out of the packet, leaning on his car, an almost empty cup of coffee on the roof. With a match, he lights it on, the smoke turning crimson with the neon lights.

He throws the dead match in a pool of standing water. It smells like it's going to rain again tonight, so Cassian grabs the cup and gets in his car, rolling down the window to an inch to puff the smoke out. He turns on the radio - love me sweet love me tender.

There’s a rolled up newspaper on the passenger seat. It’s wet and torn, used as a makeshift umbrella for the American rain. It’s from last week.

Jacob Smith, 47, has been admitted to St. Louis hospital last week due to strange behavior and symptoms. According to our source, Smith was “violent” and “uncontrollable”. Several attacks have been reported before he was admitted to the hospital. Smith was one of the first patient to take the new cancer treatment from Krennic, a new pharmaceutical company. It raises some question about the possible secondary effects of the treatment, but the company refused to answer our questions. Other patients have ever since been put under observation.

His name is Dan or Dave. Something that starts with D.

He's itching his neck constantly, Jyn is afraid he might rip his head off. But he's hiding behind a wide newspaper, and Jyn learned not to be nosy with the patrons. She's not a bartender. She gives shitty coffee and overcooked burger, the smell of grease she has to rub off her skin every night is not going to disappear if she starts caring about their problems.

So Jyn draws on the napkins, or folds them, try to kill the boredom before she starts listening to the neons lights buzzing.

This place reminds her of toothpaste, white, green and pink, the fake pristine aspect of it too, with silver linings. A chromed sink filled with a spiteful of toothpaste in the middle of a massive parking lot, surrounded by mountains.

The American Dream they said.

He's still itching his neck. Jyn finishes her drawing of a headless man, three thick drop of blood popping out of the cut.

“More?” she asks, holding the coffee pot.

He doesn't answer, doesn't even look at her, and Jyn taps on his shoulder, “Hey! do you want more?”

The customer turns his head and Jyn jolts back, her free hand on her mouth.

His skin is blemish and grey. His eyes are clouded, almost white and without pupils, his mouth is hanging and thick dark saliva is coming out of it, falling on his Simpsons printed tie. It looks like he ate soot, as his gums and teeth are blackened.

“Bloody - “

But before she can even finish, he has a strong hold of her arm, his nails digging in her flesh. Jyn can't help but scream, trying to pull out of his hold, “Let go,” she repeats.

He grunts and tries to stand up, but before he can do so, Jyn smashes the coffee pot on his head. It doesn't break, and she can only hear the faint crack of his skull and thick black blood coming out of the wounds.

Jyn doesn't take another second to think and hit him again and again with her incongruous weapon. He lets go of her, grunting.

“Don't touch me, asshole,” Jyn threatens him with the coffee pot, ready to hit again.

Taking advantage of it, Jyn runs to the jukebox to grab the baseball bat displayed above, it’s signed by some baseball player Jyn can’t remember the name of.

She notices his nail, still deep in her arm, and Jyn gags, shaking her arm violently to get rid of it.

Holding the bat tightly, she hugs the countertop and inches her way out, quietly, but ready to smash his head if needed.

Like violent spasms, his whole body quivers, his head turning left and right as if he was looking for her.

He can't seem to, however, and she remembers his eyes were pupil-less, so maybe he can’t see her. But this thing can probably smell or hear her.

Jyn bites her tongue, walks slowly out of the dinner.

She elbows a glass, it falls and breaks. “Shit.”

His gaze focuses on her, the same black saliva undulating out of his mouth.

Her breathing stop, hoping he didn't hear it. Unmoving, she keeps her eyes on him.

His clouded eyes seem to see right through her, his body is still convulsing, like sharks that needs to keep swimming to stay alive. This thing can't stop moving.  

Jyn tightens her hold on the bat, and tries to take a step backwards.

Dan jolts towards her, screaming, his hands frantic, trying to lacerate her, his mouth biting air.

Her bat is flying, hitting him on the head, the neck and shoulder. She hits his head which bounces on the counter, it makes him fall, and Jyn takes advantage of it to run to the door.

There’s a tingle of a bell when she opens the door, but before she can get out, Jyn falls hard against the concrete, her jaw snapping shut. She can taste blood in her mouth, her bat rolling away. He's holding her ankle, and he starts crawling toward her. Jyn starts kicking and screaming, sticking her boot in his face, every time his mouth is close to bite her, cursing with every punt.

There's a loud gunshot.

Jyn curls up on herself, exhausted, waiting for everything to be over. Whether it means ending up as a good dinner for Dan, or for a bullet to kill her on the spot - and probably still be a good dinner for Dan.

But her ankle is free, and when she opens her eyes, there's an outstretched hand for her to take.

“Are you ok?”

Jyn looks up at the man from earlier, who asked for coffee with a smile. He's breathing fast, a heavy shotgun in his hand.

She takes his hand and stands. Dan or Dave is on the floor, a gaping hole in his back, black blood and organs blooming from it. Jyn holds her stomach, ready to retch at the scene. Her clothes are drenched with blood - her jeans, boots and apron.

“Are you ok?” he repeats.

“I guess.”

“What was that?”

“That was Dan. Or Dave. I don't know.”

Cassian takes a step forward, and pokes the body with the shotgun. He starts convulsing again, and Jyn takes a step back, cursing.

“We should get out of here,” Cassian says, pointing the gun at the body, in case he starts walking again. “‘give you a ride?”

Jyn nods, taking her bat back and running to the lonely car in the parking lot. The door is open and she can hear a song from Grease, loudly.

“Wait.”

JLY Analysis: The In-Depth Post

Hello and welcome to what may very well be the world’s longest post about Louis Tomlinson’s recent lyric video for his song “Just Like You”! You may have seen my prior posts about the video - here’s the link for my JLY tag if you want to catch up on my prior analysis! 

To preface, this post is the result of an actual frame-by-frame analysis of the entire video (all 6,155 frames), and it’s everything that I haven’t seen other bloggers mention.

I’m here to present the content of the video so that everyone has access to it! If I’m missing something, chances are I’ve already posted about it or saw someone else post about it, but feel free to send me a message if you spot something I didn’t catch!

 Anyway, let’s get on with it! Hopefully somebody reads through all of it, but it’s a lot, lmao. All 65 pages of my screenshot document are analyzed and laid out below the cut. 😎

First up is the headline under “whole world in my right hand”: All of the headlines that have visible words around/beneath them have obviously had the actual title replaced with the lyrics, but you can still source the original article if you have enough words.

The front track width on a Morrison chassis custom built and further modified by Alloway’s is narrowed by tucking the framerails in tight enough to maintain a good turning radius with 17×7 Billet Specialties wheels cut to a proprietary Alloway’s design, and 215/50R17 Toyo Proxes radial tires. The ride height in front is four inches lower than stock, and six-piston 13-inch Wilwood disc brakes supplant 1958 vintage drums. The width of the rear framerails tucks severely to accommodate a pair of crazy wide 20×10 Alloway’s; Billet Specialties wheels stuffed into 295/50R20 Toyo Proxes tires. The differential is Currie 9-inch with 4.10 gears and limited-slip suspended by an Art Morrison four-link with a Panhard bar.

Beneath the 1958 washboard hood is a 502-inch big-block Chevy engine built by Keasler Racing with CP pistons and a Precision crankshaft. Naturally aspirated with a Holley carburetor on a GM aluminum intake manifold, the engine is approximated to produce 510 horsepower. The camshaft is a Crower grind to a Keasler proprietary profile and the cast-aluminum valve covers are from PML. Fabricated completely by Barillaro, the exhaust exits Chevrolet Performance aluminum heads via custom stainless steel headers by Barillaro Speed Emporium through stainless exhaust pipes routed through passageways in the Morrison crossmember into Borla Pro XS stainless steel mufflers. The silvery exhaust coating is by Gene Mobley at Performance Coatings.

The engine cooling system employs a copper and brass radiator from Walker, and the passenger cooling system is Vintage Air air-conditioning driven by a Vintage Air Front Runner equipped with a Tuff Stuff high-amp alternator. Originally, Carol’s 1958 was one of 3,764 Corvettes equipped with a BorgWarner full-synchro four-speed stick. The four-speed left attached to the 283 that was pulled out, and to back up the Keasler 502 a Legend Gear & Transmission LGT-700 five-speed was installed.

It’s an interesting thing about the cars built by Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop in that they don’t look all that modified until you park one next to a stocker. Take the rear end for example, there’s a ton of fiberglass work Toby Caldwell put into getting the 1958 to sit low and tuck a pair of 20-inch tires on 20×10 wheels, and you’d have to lift the trunk lid to spot the difference. The place to look is above the wheelwells on a stock 1958, there’s four inches or more of clearance on Carol’s Corvette and the wheelwell tubs are flush with the top of the quarter-panels.

Carol’s 1958 was one of 1,399 Corvettes painted Signet Red in 1958, and 3,827 with a white convertible top. Shortly after Larry commissioned Alloway’s to build a ’63 split-window for him the search was on for Carol’s 1958. Larry found the red and white convert for $35,000 and had it shipped to Alloway’s shop in Louisville, Tennessee. It wasn’t a numbers-matching car and neither were the few expired Lotto tickets found in the glovebox!

Once the major fiberglass corrections and modifications were completed the body and related parts were sent to Strip Technologies in Knoxville, Tennessee, for sodablasting. Upon return, it was sealed with Clausen’s Z-Chrome Rust Defender a high-build non-shrinking catalyzed polyester primer followed by hours and hours of block-sanding. From there it was all PPG products, including up until Scotty Troutman shot the final coats of PPG Alloway Jet Black (DBC9700). And not just the topside of the 1958 is done in Alloway Jet Black, but every square inch of the car, inner and outside fenderwells, engine and transmission, rolling chassis, and under the floorpan was fully smoothed and painted in high gloss PPG Alloway Jet Black.

The interior is another area that at first appears to be a little warmed over from stock, but in reality is far from 1958 St. Louis issue. From start to finish it took 12 months to complete Carol’s 1958 Corvette, and that includes a short time spent in Steve Holcomb’s Pro Auto Custom Interiors upholstery shop outside of Knoxville, Tennessee. Not a stitch of upholstery was in the 1958 when it rolled into Steve’s shop, and the only floor covering when it arrived was Dynamat sound deadener.

Corvette America was the source for everything needed to restore a 1958 Corvette interior, but before installing the metal parts were sent to Dan’s Polishing and Chrome for the brightwork. The Corvette America 1958 door panels were re-skinned and upholstered in Mulberry hued leather as were the custom bucket seats, dashboard and inside the trunk; the carpet is period correct loop pile. A Corvette America shrunken 1958 steering wheel faces a stock 1958 dash cluster with special ordered Classic Instruments gauges, and a Lokar gas pedal rests on the toeboard.

After debuting at SEMA 2018, and showing at the 70th Annual Grand National Roadster Show in January 2019 at the Pomona Fairplex, Carol’s 1958 Corvette, when not being driven, sits at the Ritz II parked alongside Larry’s ’63 split-window built and painted in Alloway Black … of course. Vette

THE ‘A TO Z’ OF MY AMERICAN ADVENTURE IN WORDS AND PICTURES

Did I really live in America for 15 months?

Yes.

Yes I did.

But, after more than 18 months since moving back ‘home, from Richmond, Virginia, I frequently ask myself the above question.

More than 4,000 miles away from friends, family, and home comforts, I must have been mad when I think about it. But I did love it! Experiencing a different culture and way of life was superb and I’m really glad I was brave enough to do it.

I haven’t written too much lately, but I’ve been inspired by my ‘American adventure’ and plan on providing my committed readers with A to Z ramblings and pictures on all things ‘Merica. So here goes…

Alcohol - They love it! Yep, it’s true, some Americans cannot drink, but then some Brits cannot either! There are some lovely local ales and ciders to choose from. Oh what I’d give for a Bold Rock Cider or a Vienna Lager right now; Virginia’s finest! Bud Light was like water over there and there was nothing better than a visit to the local alehouse or brewery on a Sunday afternoon filled full of sunshine, live music food trucks, and good drinks. ‘Tailgating’ was fun; you basically eat, drink and play games in/by your cars until you are ready to go into the event you are waiting for. It’s also almost impossible not to get ID’d in the States; you literally get ID’d every single time. In Walmart they have a ‘Challenge 40′ policy. Strict or what!? Pints come in the form of ‘fluid ounces’. You can pick from 16, 24 and 32 fl oz. 1 imperial pint = 17.5 fl oz. It’s fair to say that the 32 fl oz ‘growlers’ (which keep your beer cool & fresh) are the most popular…’Tipping’ is a must. A lot of employees make most of their money from tips; anything less than 10% is frowned upon, but not illegal. I recommend tipping at around 20%, and in cash…We partied pretty much every weekend (we even did an all-nighter in a Ipswich v Norwich themed party in respect of the 1-1 draw in September 2016) and I learned all the ins and outs of popular drinking games such as Chesticles, Flip Cup and Beer Pong. #BYOB

Baseball - ‘Take me out to the old ball game’ was a song that I had to get used to during my stay. I took a while to warm to the popular sport, but actually rather enjoyed it in the end. I found it quite relaxing and similar to cricket, but some fun interlude activities, after every inning, such as t-shirt shooting, mascot racing and a firework display made it worth the admission price. The Richmond Flying Squirrels were my local team (I even got a selfie with ‘Nutsie’), but I was fortunate enough to watch a Major League Baseball game between Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals. In prime seats, it was fantastic to experience the pace, skill and professionalism that these major players display. Unfortunately, I never really gave hitting or pitching a go; Year 11 Rounders was where my talents ended! #ItsAHit

Cornhole - Cornhole is amazing! Basically, either on your own or with a partner, and against another individual/pair, you have to chuck bags of corn (effectively beanbags) onto a board from quite a distance. You score one point if your bag stays on the board and three if you manage to throw it into the hole towards the top of the board! However, if, say I was to throw my bag into the hole and then little Jimmy, on the other team, did as well, our scoring points would be cancelled. The team who scores 21 points first is the winner. Technique and mental strength is everything. Some people loop them. Some people fire them in. I was obsessed, but I wasn’t as good as your average American… I might make a couple of boards now and turn it into a UK craze…#NiceToss

Driving - God. Where do I start? Turning left at traffic lights is a nightmare. You can turn right on a red light, which actually makes things on the road a lot quicker…if you don’t crash into the back of someone (cough, Daryl). Turning left is slow and takes forever. Daryl and I also took two hours to get from work to our apartment (a 10-minute drive) on our first day…it was fun trying to work out where to go and on the wrong side of the road! Trying to buy a car, as a ‘foreigner’, was even more fun. After literally the longest day in the world, with lots of technical difficulties, I finally managed to get my hands on a Hyundai Elentra. Fortunately, obtaining a Virginia Driver’s Licence was far easier, although I did have to take practical and theory tests. Now, it’s no secret that I spent quite a bit of time and money getting a UK licence, but, ironically, I had no such problems getting a Virginian one. After smashing the theory test, adapting to all the different road signs, my practical test was literally a 15-minute drive around the block to make sure I could control the car! Oh how I laughed. American driving licences are handed out via states, only making them valid in that state, so it’s all very confusing when someone from Florida drives in Virginia for example…Automatic cars are also very popular out there. Nine out of 10 cars are automatic. I’m not a fan myself; you approach a junction and all you have to do is brake, but it felt like you should have more to do! I was more of a ‘stick’ fan. Stick to what you know. There were also lots of monster trucks, with wheels as big as elephants. Don’t mess with those. #MyRideOrDie

Experience - If you’re thinking about going to work/live abroad, even if it’s for a short/extended period of time, go for it. Different places bring different experiences and ways of life. If you don’t like it, you can always come home! #JustDoIt

Food - Oh my god. It was amazing. It’s easy to put on the pounds…and not so easy to lose them. Americans love their food. They especially enjoying ‘grilling out’ - the equivalent of a BBQ - with an unlimited array of meats, pastas, and salads. They literally ‘grill’ all day (often by the pool and with a ‘cooler’ packed full of beers) and everybody brings a dish until it’s all cooked and eaten! Fried food is massive. McDonalds is monstrous. Chicken wings (mostly devoured at Buffalo Wild Wings) are most popular and the portion sizes will blow your mind. I made history when I walked through a Chinese drivethrough (I had car issues) on July 4…They’d never experienced that. Chipotle was the best. I had countless amounts of it; I could eat it forever. Double chicken. White rice. Black beans. Medium sauce. Grated cheese. Sour Cream. Sweetcorn. Chips & dip. Unbelievable. Still, I did miss a good ole Sunday Roast. #BurritoBowl

Golf - There are some lovely courses, with some beautiful views. If only I was a bit better…However, I did make Oasis Sports Park history with a tee-off that skipped across the pond on three or four occasions before plonking right next to the pin for a birdie. Well, birdie opportunity…You know what they say ‘form is temporary, class is permanent’… Footgolf, at Windy Hill Sports Complex, was a lot of fun too and was the permanent fixture of the annual Wynn Lane competition. I did convincingly win it in 2016…#Fore

Hiking - There are some amazing views in Virginia. It took me a while to get used to that hike life, but I actually really enjoyed a good ole Sunday morning stroll up the mountains. Hiking is kinda scary you know, but fortunately I outfought several bears and managed to avoid any catastrophic slips off the top of the mountains. Better to be safe than sorry… #HypeToHike

Indoor soccer - So much fun. It’s fast, it’s feisty, and it’s really competitive. Indoor soccer is played professionally across the pond and I found myself working in a place that specialised in it. XL Sports World provides 24/7 soccer. Every night of the week, hundreds of players and teams, of all ages, sexes, and abilities compete against each other. From U6 up to the 40+ age range, every day was different. In the ‘Winter season’, when there is no ‘outdoor soccer’, the XLSW facility is absolutely heaving; it opens at 6:30am and often closes somewhere between 2 and 3 am, with both ‘fields’ fully occupied through the duration! Crazy. Indoor is played on a pitch with measurements of 180 by 75 feet. Solid walls all the way around lead to a plethora of rebounds and pinballs! Let me tell you that indoor is bloody exhausting and you need subs more than ever! In such a tight area, toepoke shots were so effective, yet so annoying to watch as a football traditionalist. I loudly disapproved at the start, but actually used them quite a lot in the end as goalkeepers didn’t expect them and nobody knew where the ball would end up! This is not just your casual game of five-aside by the way…there is a whole book of unique rules (including the controversial three-line rule among others), with match referees, who have to be certified. Games consist of two 25 minute halves and you can get blue, yellow and red cards! Blue card = two-minute time-out. Yellow = five minutes. Red = whole facility ban plus a trial with the disciplinary committee (basically FIFA). Working and playing there was challenging at times as you wanted to win, but you also didn’t really want to upset customers/referees that you have to build relationships with. It’s a fine balancing act, but I think I got it just about right and only received one blue card(hand of God) in hundreds of games played. Once the ‘regular season’ is over, the play-offs occur, with the lure of ‘half-price beer’ for the winners often inspiring the teams…XLSW is the biggest seller of beer in the whole of Richmond. Impressive! Indoor Soccer is fantastic and I’d love to play and be a part of it again. Partizan Richmond United were my outdoor team and we were decent (I think we finished as runners-up). Roachy = absolute Scottish legend. #Helen #GoalsBusiness

Jamaica - I loved living with a few Jamaican lads. We had such a laugh living and working together. FIFA was on repeat. The nights out were great and we all played footy together too. Their cooking was sublime. Hopefully King Rusty has got a bit better at sh*thead by now… #BobsleighTeam

Kickers - Richmond Kickers were my local professional soccer team. Kickers played in the third tier of professional soccer (The USL) and the standard was quite impressive. On my first visit to City Stadium, I saw them narrowly lose 2-1 to a West Brom side that saw one of my heroes in Gareth McAuley play! In the summer of 2016, Kickers went one better and shocked a strong Swansea side by deservedly beating them 2-0. Both games were delayed by major thunderstorms, which was certainly a new experience for me and the English sides (Tony Pulis did keep his hat on). After settling into my XL Sports World job, I broadened my journalistic horizons and the Kickers were fantastic for me. They took me on in a part-time intern basis, and as the 2016 season progressed, I often found myself in the Kickers’ headquarters, writing articles and becoming part of the team. I even helped out the retail team once and sorted out the club merchandise! It was great to see how a professional club operates and I was very thankful to be a small part of the journey. I was very impressed with their ticket promotions too; prices were cheap (often $10) and there were stacks of drinks deals for paying customers too. Kickers’ average gate was around 4,000 when I was there. Impressive. #RVAIsRed

Lifestyle - You can do what you want really. I had so much freedom and lived a very relaxed life. All I really did was drink beer, eat food, play football, and hang out with friends. Perfect. I hit the gym a bit, I dived in the pool a bit. Concerts were epic (Milky Chance being my favourite), but you had to be careful of the crazy rednecks which were also in abundance at other events I attended such as NASCAR and the Rodeo. The Rodeo was a strange one; it’s something I can say I’ve been to, but I’m not too keen on it. Being a sport fanatic, I also put a lot of effort in to see live American Football, Baseball, Hockey, and Basketball matches. All of which were fascinating and very different. I must say that the hype, the electric atmosphere and the interval entertainment significantly adds to the value for money of attending American sporting occasions. They make you feel involved and you cannot take your eyes off the spectacle. I often went line dancing (LOL. Hopefully there is no video footage of my amazing dance moves out there) at a local bar, and loved Rugged Maniac which consisted of a 3-mile run littered with challenging obstacles (fire, barbed wire, tunnels, etc) and mud up to your waist! Paddleboarding was bloody immense…once you could do it. I did fall over a few times initially, but it was brilliant thereafter. I shot a few guns (Walmart was full of them) and, like everybody else, got hooked on Pokemon Go. The English accent drew a fair bit of attention too for some reason…#ILoveYourAccent

Mates - I was very fortunate to have such a close group of friends during my stay; they were really friendly, fun and made my experience all the more enjoyable. There are too many people to individually mention, but I made a lot of good friends I still keep in touch with. Most of these friends came from working at XL Sports World. I think it’s fair to say that I received a lot of ‘banter’ for my British roots, but elephant fan ‘Harry lad’ (fellow Brit) and I certainly gave as good as we got! Drinking games and hanging out with the likes of Justice, Wankathon Ian, Cheeky Keeky, Jesstice, Creechy, King Rusty, Coach Katy, Tommy Tuch, Syd the kid, Carlos Mohammed, McGinn, Daryl and big man Otto et al were always good value and lots of memories were made. I left them all supporting Ipswich Town and becoming experts at Sh*thead and Drenthe…#AlrightMate

Newspaper - After getting involved with the Richmond Kickers, I proceeded to write several match reports for the local newspaper: The Richmond Times-Dispatch. Being referred to as a special correspondent (!!), I covered games against teams such as Charlotte Independence, Bethlehem Steel and Louisville City, with my RTD front page on a thumping 4-0 Kickers win remaining my biggest achievement in journalism. I loved the challenge of writing for an American audience, using phrases such as cleats (boots), on frame (on target) and offsides (offside) with a hint of disapproval in my face… #SportSells

Opportunity - I am so very grateful for the whole opportunity. Ultimately, I grabbed this opportunity after working for the same company in England. My first involvement with XLSW was during a university placement that saw me lead American groups on sports tours around the UK…We visited places like Wembley and Wimbledon to mention a few, and my job was to show Americans the sights and take them from A to B. Sounds pretty cool, right? Well it’s a bit harder when you do it with a broken ankle..! Hard work and determination got me through that tour (I did get a first in that placement) and future opportunities rose from it as I was invited out to Virginia. XLSW now have bases in Florida, Maine, North Carolina, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. They, alongside soccer, are growing all of the time. #GoForIt

Patriotism - You wouldn’t believe how proud I felt to be British out there. I think I got the patriotic bug as Americans are so proud of their country and to ‘be American’. They love celebrating their country and indeed others’ as they go absolutely mental for St Patrick’s Day which is something we barely even celebrate in England! Thanksgiving and July 4 (Independence Day) are also massive and are just excuses to drink loads of beer and eat loads of food to be honest. England should have more days like that. ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ national anthem was absolutely everywhere! It seemed like it was sang at any excuse. From sporting occasions to the rodeo and NASCAR racing, every single American would standup, remove their hat, and belt out ‘the land of the free and the home of the brave’ very seriously! If you didn’t sing, or at least stand up, it was very frowned upon! Fortunately, Richmond possessed quite a large English and Scottish contigency out there, so that helped me keep sane! #StandUpIfYouLoveTheAmericans

Queen - Our Queen is a legend. Americans love her. We love her. What a woman. #GodSaveOurQueen

Richmond - Richmond is a cool place. Very artsy. Very cultural. It has a bit of everything. There are loads of great bars and places to eat. Richmond is definitely not shy of an event either, with half marathons, mud runs, live bands and gin festivals on every street corner. Soccer is growing all the time out there. You can watch more live football there than you can in England. It’s crazy and is probably why I loved my time there so much. #VirginiaIsForLovers

Skunks - Ahhhh, our Social Coed team consisting of all the lads and ladies in our friend group. What a team we were; I think we won the trophy four times! I’ll never forget my Skunks debut when I scored a ‘girl-goal’ (there is alternate scoring in Social Coed). Quite a few people laughed at that. We played good football, had a good team spirit, and drank loads of beer afterwards. Our girls, alongside a lot of other females that played at XL, were very decent by the way. I can see why the US are so dominant in the women’s game; they love it more than the blokes! I believe the Skunks have sadly dispersed now, but am also led to believe that my number 32 shirt has been retired in honour of my motoring arms and legs. #Champs.

As well as Social Coed, I played for several teams in the Men’s Open, which was a different ball game. I think I lost two or three ‘A’ finals with ‘Leicesterlona’, which was gutting as we had a great team who moved the ball well and rotated well. Conor Sammon’s (ex-Ipswich) best friend played for us as well! I never thought America would link me to the former Kilmarnock striker; football’s a funny old game! Underdogs Ian FC, captained by the inspirational Ian Robinson, also lost a final, in the ‘B’ division, after scoring three goals in the last two minutes of the semi-finals to spark absolutely wild scenes! I will never forget Marc Gohlke flopping around on the floor like a fish while trying to save a shot. Good times. I also need to mention that I scored five goals in an ‘A’ game once. #WillRigsOnFire.

Travel - USA is one of the biggest countries in the world, so it would have been rude not to have done a bit of exploring. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to visit all 52 states, but I did manage to tick off Florida, Washington DC, and both the Carolinas. DC was amazing. I loved it. I saw all the sights, where the history of the US presidency is well-celebrated. Florida was hot. So hot. Lots of lovely beaches there, with the white sand squeaking with every footstep. I wouldn’t recommend getting stuck in Boston airport and sleeping on the floor though. That’s not so fun. #Explore

Uber - Uber is extremely popular out there and is pretty much used to and fro all parties. However, the Jamaican lads and I did get stung one night when an Uber cost us $300 for a 25-minute drive. We didn’t know whether to laugh or cry in the morning. I think that was my last Uber tbf. #AToB

Vote - I was in America the night of November 8, 2016 when Donald Trump was elected as the president of the United States of America! I was deported a day later. Lol. JK. I returned home a month later. It’s cool to say that I witnessed this significant piece of American history though. I sat up until the early hours with a six pack of Bold Rock and watched it all unfold. Virginia was 50-50 for the record…#DonaldTrumped

Weather - It was extreme. The humidity was relentless. The sun continuously baked.The rain was torrential. The thunderstorms were enthralling. The snow was extraordinary. I’d say Virginian summers saw temperatures average around 32 degrees celsius (90 fahrenheit). Florida was something else, I think it got up to 43 (110) at one point. Outrageous. The snow locked me inside my apartment for a whole week. My Elentra had to be rescued by a snow plough. Sadly, I never got to drive one. I absolutely loved the extreme thunderstorms. They were petrifying, but awesome to watch (especially with a beer on the balcony). #StormChasing

XL Sports World - XLSW was where I spent the majority of my time. My role was very varied and I enjoyed all of the challenging elements that went with it (mostly). I did a bit of coaching, which I really enjoyed. I did some marketing and PR work, and was especially prolific when co-promoting and setting-up our Open House project, pushing and driving our Youth programmes through. I wrote weekly newsletters which differed in content and I drove the social media to new levels. I managed the facility most evenings, checking teams in and co-deploying an effective payment system that was well-respected by teams, referees and players (eventually). I established excellent relationships with current and new customers - consistently attracting a host of new team$$, while maintaining current customers’ business. I scheduled league games (which is harder and more time-consuming than it sounds). I introduced cricket to XLSW. I ordered food. I pulled pints. I cooked food. I cleaned toilets. My role certainly varied and it was brilliant to do for just over a year. Social media is massive, but word of mouth is still the most effective news source there is and I think I did a lot for XLSW and their customers. It wasn’t all fun and games though. People moaned. Referees were abused. Fights occured. I had to call the police once. When it boils over, it boils over. It was uncomfortable at times. #PlayTheXLWay

Youngsters - My American adventure all started through the Summer Camps. For three months, alongside Daryl, I coached ‘soccer’ to hundreds of kids. It had its challenges and was extremely tiring, but I had a cracking time! There were some excellent players and some amazing kids. Some weren’t so good or nice, but, collectively, we all had a great summer coaching them. The Summer Camps certainly prompted me to work with children as you can have such a positive influence in their lives. #JustPlay

Zoo - Z is such an awkard letter, but Richmond has a zoo. I didn’t visit it, but I did think about it. It’s quite good apparently. Maybe next time. #ZooLander

So there you go. There is my A to Z analysis of my time in America. I do miss parts of it. I had a cracking time and it played a big part of my life and led me to where I am today.

Did I really live there though? I’m still no clearer…

Inspector warned duck boat company of design flaws last year

A private inspector said Saturday that he warned the company operating duck boats on a Missouri lake about design flaws putting the watercraft at greater risk of sinking, less than a year before the accident that killed 17 people during a sudden storm.

Steve Paul, owner of the Test Drive Technologies inspection service in the St. Louis area, said he issued a written report for the company in August 2017. It explained why the boats’ engines — and pumps that remove water from their hulls — might fail in inclement weather.

He also told The Associated Press that the tourist boats’ canopies make them hard to escape when they sink — a concern raised by regulators after a similar sinking in Arkansas killed 13 people in 1999.

“The biggest problem with a duck when it sinks is that canopy,” Paul said. “That canopy becomes what I’ll call a people catcher, and people can’t get out from under that canopy.”

A spokeswoman for Ripley Entertainment, the company operating the duck boats in Branson, did not respond Saturday to telephone and email messages seeking comment. Spokeswoman Suzanne Smagala has noted that Thursday’s accident was the only one in more than 40 years of operation.

An archived version of Ripley’s website said it operates 20 duck boats in Branson and described them as “built from the ground up under United States Coast Guard (USCG) supervision with the latest in marine safety.”

In central Wisconsin, Original Wisconsin Ducks in the Dells has no plans to change how it operates after 73 years of safe rides, general manager Dan Gavinski said. But his company operates World War II-vintage boats, not the modified modern version.

Since 1999, duck boats have been linked to the deaths of more than 40 people, with a troubled safety record on the road and water alike. Their height can obscure cars, pedestrians or bicycles from a driver’s view, and maintenance problems can be severe.

Paul said he won’t know until the boat that sank is recovered from the lake whether it’s one of the two dozen he inspected for Ripley Entertainment in August 2017.

The U.S. Coast Guard said the boat that sank was built in 1944 and had passed an inspection in February, The Kansas City Star reported . But Paul said the boat would have been heavily modified to make it longer so that only part of it dates to World War II. He said it would still have the design flaw he identified in his report.

He declined to share a copy of his report with The Associated Press but said he said he is willing to make it available to authorities.

“I’m sure eventually it will be subpoenaed,” he said.

Paul said the duck boats he inspected — which the company had just purchased or repaired — vented exhaust from the motor out front and below the water line. He said in rough conditions, water could get into the exhaust system, and then into the motor, cutting it off. With the motor off, he said, its pump for removing water from the hull would not operate.

“If you watch that video, that water is definitely being slammed up into that exhaust without a doubt,” Paul said.

After the deadly sinking in Arkansas in 1999, the National Transportation Safety Board recommended doing away with the canopies and adding more floatation capacity so duck boats could remain upright and keep floating even if they took on water.

The industry took little heed, said Robert Mongeluzzi, a Philadelphia attorney who has represented victims of duck boat crashes. The canopies can protect customers from rain or sun, he noted, and closed windows allow companies to heat the cabins, extending operating hours.

The NTSB called the industry’s response to the recommendations disappointing, saying companies cited the cost of engineering and installing additional flotation capacity as prohibitive.

“The duck boat is notoriously unstable and unsuited for what they were attempting to do with it,” said Daniel Rose, an attorney whose New York-based law firm has represented victims in several accidents. “It tries to be a boat and a car and does neither, really, except under ideal circumstances.”

State officials said the Coast Guard regulates such craft; its officials did not immediately respond to requests for more information. Spokesmen said the Department of Transportation doesn’t regulate duck boats because they’re amphibious, and the Department of Public Safety doesn’t in this case because it’s a commercial vessel, as opposed to a recreational one.

It’s also not clear that any agency had the authority to keep boats off the lake. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built it in the late 1950s, but its officials said they don’t have such authority.

Witnesses have said the weather appeared calm before a storm suddenly whipped up strong waves and spray.

But nearly eight hours earlier, the National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the western and central Missouri counties.

A severe thunderstorm warning that went out at 6:32 p.m. specifically mentioned Table Rock Lake. The first emergency calls over the accident occurred just after 7 p.m.

Meteorologist Elisa Raffa of KOLR-TV in Springfield said in a phone interview Saturday that her station was forecasting the threat of severe weather all morning.

“This storm didn’t come out of nowhere,” she said. “That is what pains me. I feel like we did everything, at least we tried to do everything, by the book as meteorologists and we still had this horrible tragedy on our hands.”

Inspector warned duck boat company of design flaws last year

A private inspector said Saturday that he warned the company operating duck boats on a Missouri lake about design flaws putting the watercraft at greater risk of sinking, less than a year before the accident that killed 17 people during a sudden storm.

Steve Paul, owner of the Test Drive Technologies inspection service in St. Louis, said he issued a written report for the company in August 2017. It explained why the boats’ engines — and pumps that remove water from their hulls — might fail in inclement weather.

He also told The Associated Press that the tourist boats’ canopies make them hard to escape when they sink — a concern raised by regulators after a similar sinking in Arkansas killed 13 people in 1999.

Window Blinds Are a Safety Hazard

Window blinds come in all shapes, sizes and designs. While you might think they are a relatively modern invention, they actually date back to early Egyptians who strung reeds together for privacy, or the ancient Chinese who used bamboo.1 The Persians introduced blinds to Venice, after which Venetian blinds spread across the world. No matter what language, country, culture or hemisphere, you need something to protect your home from heat and protect your family’s privacy.

The first patent for Venetian blinds was registered in 1769 and modified in 1841 so the slats could be angled.2 Mass production of blinds began just after World War II when Hunter Douglas introduced a network of over 1,000 distributors across North America.3 In 1985 cellular shades, also called honeycomb shades, were introduced to reduce energy consumption.4

Blinds have been used in homes for centuries, but it wasn’t until the late 1800s that that cords were added to alter the angle of the slats or raise and lower the blinds. It is these cords that have triggered the greatest number of injuries and deaths from the use of blinds in homes and offices. In a recent study, researchers found nearly 17,000 U.S. children less than 6 years old were treated for injuries related to window blinds between 1990 and 2015.5

Two Children Injured Every Day

Dr. Gary Smith, who directs injuries research at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and his team analyzed 26 years of data from two national databases that collected information on emergency room treatments and fatal injuries. The report found that while most of the 17,000 children suffered minor injuries, there were 228 cases where a young child caught their neck in the cord and in two-thirds of those cases the injury was fatal.6

The study also notes that the number of reported injuries from a window blind did not demonstrate an upward or downward trend.7 The dangers of window blinds have been known since 1945 when medical journal articles reported on two accidental hangings of children. Data from the featured study indicates that two children are injured from accidents with window blinds every day. Smith commented:8

“The findings of this study confirm that children continue to die from strangulation on window blind cords. This is unacceptable. We’ve known about this problem since the 1940s. We have had a voluntary safety standard in [the U.S.] … since the mid-1990s and we’ve had product recalls, and yet we continue to see these deaths.”

Nearly two-thirds of the injuries children suffered in this study were to their head, often cuts, contusions and abrasions.9 Children who were tangled in the cords accounted for 11.9 percent of all the cases, and those were associated with nearly 80 percent of the 726 children who were hospitalized. Window blind cords were also associated with 94 percent of the 271 children who died during the study period.

The number of children injured may not be accurate as not all children require emergency care after a window blind is pulled from the window or the child is tangled in the cord. Data from the study indicates that most of the injuries occur at home in the bedroom or living room, and nearly 90 percent happened when the children were under the care of their parents. But almost none of the entanglements were witnessed.

Researchers Want the Problem to Be Designed Out of Existence

As this is not a new problem, and certainly not the first study demonstrating the issue continues to be a challenge to children’s health care, Smith advocates “designing the problem out of existence”10 as the most effective means of reducing or eliminating these types of injuries to children. In 1985 advocacy groups began efforts to remove cords from window blinds.

In an interview on ABC Nightline, Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) chairman Elliot Kaye stated “I don’t know what the issue is, other than greed.”11 During the interview Kaye shared how manufacturers had used lobbyists and public relations campaigns to resist efforts to address the need for cordless blinds since 1985.

The stalemate between the CPSC and manufacturers highlights the lack of legislative teeth the CPSC has in protecting consumers.12 Over the years the industry has offered voluntary fixes that provide the illusion of safety as the number of injuries and deaths has not abated. The CPSC is required by law to defer to industries that are voluntarily making changes to ensure safety to their consumers.

The theory is that manufacturers have strong reasons to ensure their products are safe. However, in reality, some industries have used their resources to put off regulatory action using voluntary standards that are woefully inadequate. Sean Kane, president of Safety Research & Strategies from Massachusetts, asks:13

"How many years of professional courtesy should the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission extend to the window coverings industry before abandoning the standard process?"

Industry officials blame the safety problems on consumers and parents who don't keep their children out of harm's way.14 Pamela Gilbert, former executive director of the CPSC and Washington lawyer, talks about the process, saying,15 "The process works when industry really wants to solve the problem. The industry has thought from the beginning that this is a parental supervision thing.”

Gilbert characterizes the industry’s position, saying, “We are going to have cords. You have cords in blinds just like you have engines in cars. Parents should keep kids out of roads and out of window blinds. It is not our problem." According to James Onder, St. Louis attorney responsible for 50 lawsuits against manufacturers in 23 states where children were injured or killed:16

“They are not going cordless because they want to protect their profit margins. The industry has made a conscious decision that it is cheaper to pay off a lawsuit than it is to save human lives ...”

A voluntary safety standard has been in place since 1996.17 In an effort to reduce attention to a lack of industry action, the Window Covering Manufacturers Association recently proposed revising their voluntary safety standard to require stock products to be sold cordless or with inaccessible cords, although custom blinds with cords could still be ordered.

Top Five Hidden Hazards at Home

In an ABC News investigation conducted at stations across the U.S., it appeared that the message about window blind safety hazards had not reached the general public or store clerks helping new parents purchase window coverings.18

Reporters asking about purchasing window blinds for homes with children got an array of answers that ranged from clerks who understood cords were a hazard to, “I think it’ll be too tall to grab the cord. I mean you can always shorten it, when you have the cord, you can just tie it up so only you guys can access it.” Window blinds are among the top five hidden hazards the CPSC has identified to toddlers and other children in your home. Others they warn about include:19

• Magnets When small powerful magnets are swallowed they can attract to each other inside the body and twist or block intestines. If you believe your child has swallowed a magnet, get immediate medical attention.

• Recalled products Watch for the latest safety recalls and remove dangerous products from your home. Sign up for recall notices now at www.cpsc.gov.

• Windows Never place your child’s crib or playpen near window blinds. In rooms where children spend the most time, use cordless blinds or install safety devices on the cords and install window guards or stops to prevent falls from the window.

• Tip over Kids will climb. Top-heavy furniture, TVs and stoves can tip over and crush young children. Make them all more stable by installing anchors and brackets.

• Pools and spa drains Suction from a pool or spa drain can be powerful enough to trap a child or adult underwater. Inspect pools and spas for missing or broken drain covers.

Keeping Your Toddler Safe

While manufacturers would like to abdicate all of their responsibility to produce and sell a consumer-safe product, the reality is that it takes everyone to raise the next generation of children. Parents need a combination of accurate information and safe products to help protect their children from myriad potential problems, including falls, fire, poisons and choking The responsibility doesn’t fall exclusively to manufacturers or to parents. While it is impossible to list everything you need to keep your toddler safe, here is a short list of additional strategies that may help:20,21,22

Burns

Never drink hot fluids when feeding or nursing your baby

Turn your hot water heater to 122 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees Celsius) to reduce the potential for burns during baths

Keep hot pans and plates away from the edge of the table or stove

Remove lighters, matches and other fire-starting equipment from reach

Store a fire extinguisher in your home, and two if you have a two-story home

Move electrical cords out of reach of children as they will pull items over

Don’t store candles where children can reach them

Don’t leave children near an open fire, such as candles, wood-burning stove or fireplace

Passive smoke and car exhaust

Protect your child’s lungs from small particulate pollution from cigarettes and car and truck emissions that trigger asthma, allergies, brain inflammation and behavioral changes. Make a commitment to not smoke in the same home or car as your child. Change your car air intake to recirculate when in heavy traffic and close your windows to reduce the amount of car emissions sucked into your car.

Choking

Remove small objects from reach, such as buttons, pens, candy, marbles, beads, batteries and coins

Do not give small children foods that can break off into small, hard pieces

Cut foods very small or minced to prevent choking

Do not give small children grapes, nuts, popcorn, marshmallows or similar foods

Keep your child seated and with you while eating

Evaluate toys for your child, as anything smaller than a tennis ball is a potential choking hazard23

Small children may strangulate on jewelry, long cords or looped cords

Keep medications, toothpaste and cosmetics locked and out of reach

Watch what has fallen to the floor as your child will put most items in their mouth

Cars and Traffic

Use a properly fitted and approved child restraint suitable for your child’s age, size and weight

Never store anything on the floor of the back seat, or in the back of a station wagon or hatchback, as they can easily hurt your child in an accident

Avoid leaving your child alone in a car, even for just a few minutes

Toddlers need to be held when near traffic as they easily dart away into the road

Car injuries are common when moving the car in the driveway; it is safest to have the child in the car with you when moving the car

Use child locks to prevent your child from accidentally opening windows and doors

Drowning

Install safety latches on bathroom doors and toilet bowls

Never leave your child unattended in a bathtub or in the bathroom

Provide immediate and consistent supervision around a pool, hot tub or bucket of water

Falls

A toddler’s body is top heavy, causing them to tip over easily

Use gates or locked doors to keep your toddler away from stairs

Anchor your television, bookshelves and other furniture so they don’t topple when your toddler is pulling on them

Do not use bunk beds with toddlers

Ensure all children wear helmets when they are biking or riding in a child seat on a bike

Cover all sharp corners of furniture to prevent injury
