William S. Burroughs: A Man Within explores the life of a Beat writer who was arguably the grittiest and most bedeviling of the group. Despite his association with punk and grunge, Burroughs's work was lyrically plaintive and his voice provided a window to his ineffable sadness. The documentary features interviews with Burroughs and his admirers, but they frustratingly only alight on his literary significance when speaking in terms of personal influence. Leyser attempts to equate Burroughs's gun fetishism with Hunter S. Thompson's recklessness, but Burroughs's most accomplished fiction was the boiling run-off of his inner-demon-induced sweat. Burroughs epitomized the 20th-century ideal of the over-educated libertine and forever changed the conversation about sexual orientation, but his last boyfriend recounts an evening where he confessed his love, only to be laughingly dismissed. A Man Within persuasively argues that Burroughs's most dangerous addiction might have been the refusal of love.

Here is a track for my Plug and Play Module where we had to write a track based on the cut up technique. 

For this i used an article by the Guardian on ‘Aquatic Ape Theory’. 

As for the production style I thought I would try something a little different from my normal either acoustic approach or metal.

Taking a wide range of Bowie-related words and phrases such as song or album titles, they were chopped into individual words, and mixed in a hat before randomly arranged to create possible titles and sub-headings for the editorial.

This ‘cut-up’ method pays homage to Bowie’s own songwriting technique, favoured by the singer alongside other icons Kurt Cobain and Thom Yorke.

David Bowie explained: “You write down a paragraph or two describing several different subjects, creating a kind of ‘story ingredients’ list, I suppose, and then cut the sentences into four or five-word sections; mix ’em up and reconnect them.

“You can get some pretty interesting idea combinations like this,” he said. “You can use them as is or, if you have a craven need to not lose control, bounce off these ideas and write whole new sections.”

Not only did these provide us with some interesting possibilities for titles and sub-headings, it also inspired the feel for each individual page of our five-page editorial.

We emerged with the title and five strong sub-headings.
