i don't go here at all, but. if you're queer and REALLY like x-men 97, but really hate how they handled magneto because you think magneto was right. can i please introduce you to cute mutants by sj whitby. because i promise you this book series is EVERYTHING you're looking for.

the main character, dylan, is an x-men fan who actually discusses if magneto was right in the context of queer, mutant, and religious oppression in the story's universe. the mutants are queer, and messy, and are not punished by the narrative for standing up for what they know is right. the story doesn't shy away from dylan's guilt over some of their more extreme actions, but in the context of the situations dylan and the mutants are regularly facing, the actions are almost always justified.

i watched deadpool 2 in preparation of seeing deadpool & wolverine and i suddenly realized 1) i very much understood where dylan was coming from on like. everything. and 2) that it is incredibly funny to get into cute mutants first and THEN check out x-men adjacent things.
