When Should You Choose Local vs. Cloud-Based DCM Viewers? A Comparison Guide
To inspect these datasets, a specialized "DCM viewer" is required. When selecting software, two key options exist:
Local viewers run directly on hospital workstations or personal devices. Cloud-based viewers instead utilize centralized, web-deployed infrastructure, allowing remote access.
But which architecture makes the most sense for your use case? In this guide, we'll compare local and cloud DCM viewers across critical factors like security, speed, mobility, pricing, and more.
Decide what's most important for your workflow to choose the optimal approach.
Tumblr media
Local Viewer Benefits
Installing viewing software natively on individual devices offers these advantages:
1. Speed And Responsiveness
With local storage, transfer times are minimized. Images are immediately available to indexing processes that enable instantaneous rendering and manipulation.
Cloud latency from pipes or caching delays perception, especially for blazing-fast interactions like:
Rapid review/comparison of high-res multimodal scans and linked priors
Quickly paging through frame-by-frame ultrasound video
Modifying 3D opacity transfer functions on the fly
If snappy performance is mandatory, avoid roundtrips to cloud servers, which downgrade interactivity.
2. Security And Privacy
No transmission means no interception. Keeping protected health information (PHI) inside hospital networks with verified security protocols prevents breaches during transfer or cloud retention. Compliance is simplified.
While reputable providers offer robust cloud protection, local storage guarantees safety for sensitive clinical data or patient-identifiable scans used in teaching. Some institutions have policies prohibiting cloud usage entirely.
3. Reliability And Uptime
Once configured, local setups have essentially 100% guaranteed availability, unaffected by Internet connectivity problems. Cloud services rely on always-on links without disruption. Temporary ISP or infrastructure issues can cut access and halt diagnoses if servers can’t be reached.
For this reason, many clinicians maintain local mirrors with cloud backup rather than relying solely on cloud continuity. Redundancy is key for mission-critical diagnosis.
4. Granular Control
When managing your own infrastructure, software customizations, integration with other hospital IT systems, and long-term retention rules are easier to tailor to your needs. Change requests don’t require vendor submission/approval. You own the servers, desktop clients, and everything in between.
If your workflows demand unique handling, modification freedom makes local more convenient than conforming usage to external cloud restrictions.
Cloud Viewer Benefits
Alternatively, cloud-hosted remote DCM viewers offer their own compelling advantages:
1. Lower Upfront Cost
Delivering apps and storage from centralized data centers allows massive economies of scale, reducing per-user pricing.
For budget-limited practices, cloud subscriptions are far cheaper than investing in compliant on-premise hardware like medical workstations, servers, and backup systems.
Ongoing fees are also lower since hardware administration and life-cycling costs are eliminated. Patching, maintenance, expansions, and tech payroll to manage infrastructure all become provider responsibilities you’re relieved from.
2. Advanced Capabilities
Top-tier SaaS vendors dedicate enormous R&D budgets towards continually expanding and refining AI-enhanced features. The scope of innovation easily surpasses in-house efforts for all but the largest hospital chains:
Automated findings tagging and indexing
Contextual priors suggestion during interpretation
Real-time quality checking to prevent errors
Predictive analytics revealing trends
Accessing cutting-edge tools this way frees up your own resources to focus on patients rather than platform development.
3. Seamless Collaboration
Cloud sharing simplifies coordinating diagnosis and second opinions between staffers, external specialists, and partner sites. Cases are instantly accessible anywhere via links instead of requiring local transfer or VPN access.
Multi-party videoconferencing can reference scans in real time during virtual rounds. Annotations highlight areas of concern and are preserved with studies.
4. Superior Reliability
Leading SaaS providers deliver guaranteed 99.99% or better uptime via resilient server farms with automatic failover. Studying continuity statistics reveals most downtime is planned maintenance or minor blips, avoiding doctors' dependence on institutional infrastructure they can’t fully trust.
Natural disasters that might damage localized servers won’t interrupt globally distributed cloud access. For clinicians at smaller clinics, reliability should be weighed heavily.
5. Enhanced Mobility
Cloud liberates diagnosticians from confined workstation locations. As long as Internet access exists on laptops, tablets, or even phones, caseloads are reachable anywhere via browsers or apps.
Better portability aids quicker turnaround times, allows off-site analysis, improves home flexibility, and enables bringing imaging to patients’ bedsides.
Tumblr media
Key Decision Factors
Now that we’ve surveyed the advantages in both directions, determining optimal DCM viewer deployment depends on your unique requirements. Here are key considerations:
Tumblr media
Beyond the table above, also decide if you need a universal viewer able to handle all modalities or more specialized DCM software dedicated to certain scenarios like cardiology or dental. Mixing multiple solutions is common to serve different use cases.
DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) is a complex file standard used globally to store medical images and related data.

Get Your Art Fix!
Tumblr media
"A muse can be a mirror: a reflection of the artist's desires, anxieties, dreams and needs." ~ Vince Aletti
"Lani DCM" by STATIC, 2018
Series: Modern Muses Collection
Arty-Fact: Since 2006, London based artistic duo STATIC (Tom Jackson and Craig Evans) have been creating works that explore duality and conflict. Blending pattern with portraiture, STATIC's signature style is heavily influenced by modern tribes and mythologies.
STATIC’s “Modern Muses Collection” is a great example of their artistry, challenging the viewer to examine their own cultural identity.

The surface area of the magnets is smaller in an open MRI machine, primarily because the magnets are placed on two opposing sides rather than circumferentially. So, is there a difference between open and closed MRI? In terms of tesla (the unit used to measure magnetic field strength), the open MRI has a much lower value compared with traditional MRI. Most open MRIs have a value of 0.3 to 0.7 T. The more advanced open MRI scanner has a maximum value of 1.2 T. However, closed MRIs are more powerful and have magnetic fields ranging from 1.5 to 3.0 T. Most of the disadvantages of open MRI are due to its lower magnetic field.

Okay here are my issues with it. Apologies for any lack of cohesion, I am bone-tired and sleep-deprived.
- First of all, keep in mind that this special was recorded over the course of three and a half hours.
- The first segment was strong. I thought the musical analysis of DCM was interesting and useful and each member was able to speak at length about something.
- When they are actually getting into the flow of a conversation, production cuts them off. This is kept in for some reason for viewers to see.
- The subsequent half (~15 minutes) is dominated by Kibum. The interviewer is not specifically speaking to him, but he is the one to take charge, as the member most comfortable with speaking/variety/etc. Even in closing, when all the members are asked to sum up their feelings, Onew is asked to start but because he is uncertain, Kibum volunteers instead. This is both at the end of this segment, but also at the end of the day/interview. If, by this point, the members - who have all been working professionals for over a decade - are not comfortable, not in a rapport, not conversational, that is in issue with the journalism and the atmosphere created in that environment. It might be that they are tired, but the questions posed to them are not necessarily stimulating. In this three! hour long interview, a LOT of the onus is being put on the interviewees and that is not their jobs.
- I saw people praise the sincerity/seriousness/artist-orientation of this interview, and I would like to challenge that or hear more. What did this tell us about their artistry, specifically? What did this allow for or access that we do not get from other interviews that are shorter and/or less labor-intensive? Notably, for me, is that we largely got Kibum’s perspective on very specific aspects of their work (overarching direction and visuals), because he is the member who feels most comfortable speaking, which is again an issue with the direction and journalism.
- The segment is interspersed with talking heads of each of the members individually. The question posed to each member was what their fear was. Fundamentally, I find this a really absurd angle to take on a special segment about a band’s comeback, and frankly, I think it’s inappropriate. That, on top of, however, a rather quiet group interview, just made for a really confusing tone. This is further an issue for me because they had already begun speaking to the challenges they were encountering, organically, when they were abruptly cut off.
This is framed as an in-depth look at SHINee, and it’s really not. There have been far more in-depth interviews (Stacy Nam’s, for example). In fact, while the interviewers are both fans of SHINee, they seem ill-prepared. For example, the question that spurs the half of the interview of I mentioned Kibum dominates, the interviewer brings up the album art for Sherlock and the album art for MTTM and then asks:
Tumblr media
And after this the band members look at each other for a beat, before Kibum goes into the art direction, subcultures SHINee is inspired by, etc - but I think that is Kibum being... very generous. What do Sherlock’s and MTTM’s album art have to do with each other? What do they, specifically, have to do with the larger vision of SHINee’s work? The interviewer posed this as if to highlight that SHINee are at odds with KPop’s target demographic of teenagers and it’s a challenging question because it is phrased poorly and requires a lot of work from Kibum to draw something out of.
The interviewer also says that with Don’t Call Me, SHINee are now entering a space of art - beyond just music and performance, now incorporating fashion and a more comprehensive collaboration of artistic media. And they politely say thank you and then Kibum goes on a bit of a tangent, but SHINee have ALWAYS been mindful of various forms of art in their work. Fashion has always been absolutely critical - look at 1 of 1 and Married to the Music. Look at the music videos for The Story of Light. RDD, Lucifer had fashion far ahead of its time. Even aside from costuming and fashion, their use of visual art in regards to color and photography over the years, has always been extremely well thought out. Look at any of Taemin’s solo work, but even Never Gonna Dance Again specifically. It’s a really unfounded claim to say they have only just now entered that space, and it just comes across as the interviewer attempting to synthesize something in order to get a response with little actual accuracy in terms of the band themselves.
I need a little rest and time to pull together what I think the root of the issue fundamentally is (sorry it’s 5AM here). But at first blush it just seems like little preparation and research and direction went into this behemoth of an interview.

Girl Scout Troops: The Entrepreneurs of the Next Generation
Girl Scouts troop member creates a cookie-selling strategy that goes viral.
PRESS RELEASE UPDATED: FEB 28, 2019
GAINESVILLE, FLA., February 21, 2019, (Swampstratcomm-sp19.tumblr.com)—Based on PRWeek Latest News, this week’s news topics were diverse in comparison with one another. One topic talked about a new TV show that accurately depicts the world of celebrity PR. Another article focused on Facebook intentionally violating laws and how hefty fines should be implemented if illegal content is found on Facebook or Google platforms. An article about Girl Scout Troops creative marketing strategies was featured. The article discussed the young entrepreneurs’ marketing strategies with their cookie-selling efforts and how current marketers can gain valuable insight from the business leaders of the next generation. While all of these articles are different in content, they all share the common theme of public relations importance and the impact that leads to the distribution of knowledge, communication, data, and information globally that allows audiences to form an image of the particular organization, individual, or career.
New TV comedy-drama Flack is set in the world of celebrity PR and features drug taking, bullying, and lying that depicts an accurate version of the specific sector, according to the show’s protagonist. The UKTV show debuted on February 21, 2019, and stars Anna Paquin as Robyn, an American celebrity working in London. The show is centered around Robyn’s relationship with individuals in her life, as well as her life at a celebrity PR agency, Mills Paulson. In the TV drama, the character Robyn is shown taking drugs at the hotel room of a client, sleeping with a different client, and lying to the media. When speaking of her role in the show and the career of celebrity PR, Paquin stated, “The world of PR is very fascinating and interesting, as far as how it spins what has been put out into the world into what you want to be seen in the world. And sometimes that includes twisting things that are unfortunately not so flattering. But from what I have found in my case [it has been about] shedding light on things where someone has tried to make some kind of bullshit story up.” When asked if the show glamorizes this particular side of PR, Paquin said the show portrays an “accurate and warts-and-all version of a work environment that had all manner of ups and downs.” Neither good or bad, Paquin described the show as realistic of the celebrity PR work environment.
Facebook has been in the spotlight due to allegations that the company has intentionally violated laws. The Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport Committee recommends imposing hefty fines if illegal content is found on Facebook or Google. According to the Report of Fake News and Disinformation, Facebook intentionally and knowingly violated data and anti-competition laws. The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee call for tech companies to be bound by a compulsory code of ethics and overseen by an independent regulatory with power to launch legal action in case of breaches. The Report on Fake News and Disinformation included the recommendation of making tech companies legally liable for taking action against harmful content on their platforms. Facebook and Google rely on user-generated content that is published without prior moderation. In particular, Facebook had come under criticism for charging high prices in advertisements in exchange of data to developers, both intentionally and knowingly violating data privacy and anti-competition laws. The Report on Disinformation and Fake News also calls for the Information Commissioner’s Office to conduct a detailed investigation into Facebook’s platform, its use of users’ and users’ friends’ data, and the use of reciprocity of the sharing of data. There is also the support of conducting a comprehensive audit of the advertising market on social media and an investigation into whether or not Facebook has participated in anti-competitive practices. Damian Collins, chair of DCMS committee stated, “Democracy is at risk from the malicious and relentless targeting of citizens with disinformation and personalized ‘dark adverts’ for unidentifiable sources, delivered through the major social media platforms we use every day.” Powerhouse companies, like Facebook, exercise massive market power, which enables the company to make money by bullying the smaller technology companies and developers who rely on this platform to reach their customers. Major tech companies are aware of these situations, but continuously fail to address the issues. The principle of the ‘move fast and break’ things culture often seems to be that it is better to apologize later than to ask permission now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Girl Scouts are being nicknamed “smart cookies” due to their cookie-selling efforts that go viral every year. Being young entrepreneurs, marketers who need fresh ideas should look to Girl Scout troops for inspiration. The Girl Scout troops are creating unique viral cookie-selling campaigns at a quick and efficient rate. The most recent Girl Scout viral sensation was 10-year-old Kiki Paschall from Winnetka, California who made global headlines by remixing Cardi B’s popular song “Money” to incorporate her troop and their cookie-selling efforts. The girl’s remix went viral on the internet and was covered by media outlets, including Time, NPR, Essence, Today, and the Daily Mail. Paschall’s video generated exposure on Twitter and was retweeted by the official Twitter of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. and Cardi B. The video received over three million views from Twitter interaction. After one day of Paschall’s video going viral, the girl sold more than 1,000 boxes of cookies for her troop. From the success of the video, Paschall was able to not only bring in money for her troop but also awareness of what Girl Scouts mission is. Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. strives to teach its members how to be entrepreneurs and successfully run their own businesses. The members of Girl Scouts can incorporate these marketing tips into their cookie-selling ventures. Stewart Goodbody, Senior Director of Communications and External Affairs for Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. said that one of the main elements of the Girl Scout Cookie Program is having it be led by girls. “We see a lot of really innovative, unique ways of marketing from our girls every year…we applaud the girls for their ingenuity and their creativity,” said Goodbody. Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. encourages individuals to create content related to the organization that can be shared on its national channels. Once these videos go viral, the national organization uses the content to support messages about how Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. provide its members with the tools to hold a leadership position and enact positive change. “We use viral moments to rally our members and to share their stories and voice,” said Goodbody. Similarly, the videos are a way to educate people about the Girl Scout Cookie Program. Not only are the cookies delicious, but help to mold the “future of female leadership and entrepreneurship in the business world” (Goodbody). Besides Paschall, other girls have created viral videos that talk about Girl Scout cookies. These marketing ideas not only ignite sales but increase connectivity and involvement. Thus, a lesson that any marketer can learn from these young entrepreneurs is to be up to date with current trends and news. By beign up to date on the current trends, marketers can use the knowledge to execute ideas and strategies in a timely manner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, while the articles of PRWeek's Latest News differed in their content, the articles shared the theme of the importance and impact that public relations has on the distribution of knowledge, information, data, and communication. The impact of public relations allows viewers to create an image of the specific individual, organization, or career field. In relation to the article about the Girl Scout member’s viral video, the takeaway is that any a great marketing strategy can be created and successfully implemented. Kiki Paschall was able to take a popular song and remix it to incorporate her Girl Scout troop and their cookie-selling program. Her creative marketing strategy resulted in over 3 million video interactions on social media, as well as retweets from the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. and Cardi B. Similarly, the exposure generated from the viral video resulted in over 1,000 boxes of cookies sold within the first day. The young entrepreneur’s video was used as a platform to provide viewers with an education about what the Girl Scouts organizations promote. This viral video, along with many other creative marketing initiatives, allowed viewers to associate Girl Scouts with leadership and business skills. Thus, viewers are able to associate the image of Girl Scouts with young entrepreneurs. In the case of the TV drama, Flack, the show promotes the image of the celebrity PR career in an “accurate and warts-and-all version” that showcases a realistic scenario of the ups and downs in the work environment. In reference to the criticism Facebook has received, the Report of Fake News and Disinformation creates the image of Facebook as being a power-hungry organization that charges high prices in the advertisements in exchange of data to developers. This course of action is both intentionally and knowingly violating data privacy and anti-competition laws. Consequently, this action shows Facebook in a negative light as a company that does not care about its users’ privacy and personal data.
PRWeek is a modern business publishing brand that spans online, print, events, and social media while incorporating a paid-for content strategy and gated website.

Intro
Welcome! These posts are dedicated to the character Olivia Daniels -- played by the fantastic Alexa Sutherland -- from the film Deadly Cheer Mom.
Spoilers follow. If you haven't seen DCM, check it out before continuing.
So why Liv? Because she stole the show! As the film's narrative progresses, Olivia is revealed to be more complex than initially suggested, and she remains that way right up until the end.
Speaking of that last part, you could say that the resolution caused quite a stir among certain members of the audience. Conversely, there were those who didn't take it too seriously, and commended the creators for daring to be different. Sometimes it's just fun rooting for a smart and charming vixen. The people who crafted Olivia created a queen.
Tumblr media
Simply put, in the bold ending, Olivia got EVERYTHING she wanted. As mentioned, there were viewers who whined up a storm. 😉 The rest of us recognized the complexity of this layered character, applauded the excellence of Alexa Sutherland, and appreciated the cleverness of the film's writer, Lauren Balson Carter, who gave us a far less cliched conclusion than we usually get in suspense films. While it might be nice to see Queen Olivia again, it's probably best to simply let her have her happily-ever-after. 😀 👑

Synopsis : ^#DOWNLOAD@PDF^# Eames: Beautiful Details ^#DOWNLOAD@PDF^#
'Eames: Beautiful Details' celebrates the seamlessness and fluidity in which Charles and Ray Eames operated as both a husband and wife team and as designers unrestricted by traditionally professional boundaries. Select details of their life and work, from their refined designs to their innovative experiments, and even including images depicting the everyday poetic moments of their lives, and are shared here in this exhibit within a book. Inspired by Charles's immersive and original slideshows, in which he expertly selected and grouped images together that communicated information in an aesthetic, direct, and accessible way, this book strives to visually create the Eameses' life and work by taking the viewer through a delightful journey, focusing on their ''beautiful details.'' The packaging design of the 'Eames: Beautiful Details' slipcase is a pattern inspired by the triangles and colors of one of their most inventive, if lesser known, designs for children, simply called, ''the toy.'' It also pays homage to the patterns they used on their well loved House of Cards. The Eameses brought a sense of humor and joy to everything they created, and the design and layout of the book aims to convey that spirit in a visual feast for the eyes. It is a testament to the Eameses and the lasting value of good design that their Eames lounge chair, created in 1956, endures today as perhaps the most recognizable and coveted piece of mid century furniture design. Their experiments in technological innovations, like molded plywood and fiberglass, resulted in such classic pieces as the bent plywood LCW and DCM Chairs, the Molded Plastic Chairs, and the Aluminum Group; all of which are still in production by Herman Miller. Likewise, Charles and Ray designed and built their own home in 1949 in Pacific Palisades, and it is still revered as a landmark of modern architecture. Built as part of the Case Study program in California, sponsored by Arts & Architecture magazine, it was one of the earliest experiments in pre fab construction, using off the shelf industrial parts. But unlike the austerity of much of modern architectural design, their factory like shell was lovingly lived in along with their personal collections of folk art, treasures from their travels, and everyday objects refreshingly displayed with affection and without pretense. In exhibition design as well, ''Mathematica: A World of Numbers ... and Beyond, 1961,'' for IBM is considered groundbreaking as an interactive, educational, and experiential way to communicate the wonder and magic of math. Similarly, their seminal film, Powers of Ten, 1977, expresses the mathematical concept of multiplying to the tenth power, in a very direct, simple, and powerful way. Unlike any other book previously published on Charles and Ray Eames, this unique monograph is a visual celebration of their work and life, and was created in true collaboration with Charles's grandson, Eames Demetrios, and other members of the Eames family.

DICOM and PACS systems are used to save the images from the surgical instruments to the patients’ dental records. This saves the patient from a lot of time and trouble, since not only does the patient have to take time to record all the images from the image acquisitions, but the dentist has to take time to write the patient’s dental charts, but also the dentist has to spend time in manually entering all the information into the dental charts.

New Doc, ‘People You May Know,’ Reveals a War on Democracy Being Waged With Big Data | Religion Dispatches
Tumblr media
As a journalist taking assignments in war-torn areas, London-based American expat Charles Kriel developed an interest in big data and its use in disinformation campaigns. This eventually led to his appointment as special advisor on fake news to the House of Commons’ DCMS (Digital, Culture, Media, Sport) select committee as it investigated the roles Cambridge Analytica, Facebook, and Russia played in influencing the Brexit referendum.
Disappointment with Britain’s lack of political will to pursue needed regulation of tech companies, Kriel and film director Katharina Gellein Viken, determined to bring what they’d learned about big data manipulation, microtargeting, and tech companies’ undermining of civil society to the broader public.
The result is the new documentary People You May Know (go to trailer), starring Kriel and directed by Viken, which spotlights the role played by churches, many of which use big data for microtargeted outreach, in the information manipulation ecosystem that continues to erode democracy in the US, the UK, and elsewhere. Distributed in the United States by Sundance and available on Prime Video, this must-watch documentary couldn’t be more timely for an election cycle marred by turbulence, uncertainty about such fundamental matters as peaceful transfer of power, and a right-wing Christian power grab.
On October 13, Charles and Katharina sat down (over Zoom) with RD’s Chrissy Stroop for an interview about their creative process, their film’s reception, and the serious threat that big data manipulation represents to democracy.
This interview, which will be presented in two parts, has been edited for length and clarity.
Part 1
CS: So, your film covers a complicated topic with a lot of moving parts that can be tricky to follow. What would be your thirty-second elevator pitch summary of what you want viewers to walk away from People You May Know with?
CK: What’s important to understand is that the Koch brothers commissioned a religious charity, Cofi, and a religious software company, Gloo, to work with Cambridge Analytica to create a platform where churches could specifically target people who are suffering from mental illness or grief in order to recruit them into the churches, and then to weaponize them for the politics of the far Right.
CS: So tell me more about how you came to produce this specific film with this specific focus.
KGV: Well, so, Charles and I are quite recent partners, but we’ve known each other about ten years. And I knew that Charles had done work for civil society and as a journalist in war zones and that kind of thing, and he told me early on that he was interested in Cambridge Analytica, and I watched him do a couple of talks on the subject. And then he wrote a paper for NATO about the potential influence of the Brexit referendum by Cambridge Analytica.
He was then called to the DCMS select committee in the UK, who had been the first to form a committee to really look at the social media companies and what they were doing, and this was back when everyone was at the level of, well isn’t Facebook a nice thing that connects people? And then Charles came into the room and said they should be broken up under antitrust laws, and have you heard about Cambridge Analytica and five-factor personality profiling? Everybody’s jaw dropped, and they invited him to be special advisor the next day. And I said that we have to document this journey and this process.
I’d done a celebrity piece before, and I think initially I just wanted to do something serious; I wanted to look into fake news. And then Carole Cadwalladr’s story [co-written by Emma Graham-Harrison] with whistleblower Chris Wylie broke and the headlines just rolled across the world. I followed the committee for a year. They went to America, the first committee to ever do so, to interview Google, Twitter, Facebook. And as these tech companies lied, and they lied some more, it became a very interesting story. Then it turned out that there was very little will in the UK to pursue any of the regulation that the committee recommended for microtargeting and those issues.
So we kind of wondered, what’s the conclusion of this film? Where does it go? Because Charles had placed himself at the middle of this story, people kept coming to him with evidence. One of them, Brent Allpress, who you’ve seen in the film, just said, listen, I’ve got this connection between Cambridge Analytica and church. When we looked into it, we said, well, we’ve just had a baby, but we have to go on the road and look into this story. So we put our three-month-old baby in the back of a car and drove across America. That’s how it all came about.
CS: What a remarkable story! Charles, what is the origin of your interest in big data and personality profiling?
CK: So, probably about eight or nine years ago, someone asked me if I would go into a conflict zone and work with independent local journalists, and help them try to get digital. In post-Soviet oligarchic, authoritarian states, getting digital was one of the best ways that these journalists could get their message out. So, this offer came up, I was very excited about it, and that’s how I found myself in Nargorno-Karabakh.
I loved doing that work, and I did more and more of that work, in worse and worse places. I’ve worked everywhere from Mongolia and Tajikistan to Iraqi Kurdistan. In situations like that, you find yourself doing lots of work that was almost like counter-radicalization; it was definitely counter-disinformation. That’s what you’re helping the journalists with. So I became really informed on that kind of work, and every dark alley that I went down in these war zones or frozen conflict zones, I would find Twitter, Google, and Facebook.
You’ve signed yourself in [to the church’s app], you’ve signed in your children, you’ve shared your vulnerabilities…but it’s not just mental health, it’s vulnerabilities in general.
CS: Which is fascinating. Troll farms became a big topic in 2016. Were you picking up on anything like that, the organized use of trolls, before 2016?
CK: I was picking up on the methodologies already in place; they just hadn’t been scaled in the way that troll farms scaled things. The methodologies of disinformation and radicalization, and now election manipulation, are all incredibly similar. The difference is to what scale you operate. When the troll farms really kicked in, that was around the time of the annexation of Crimea [in March of 2014].
With social media, what you’re able to do, and what Cambridge Analytica has done, is they do data harvesting, and from those data harvests, they’re able to develop really detailed profiles of individuals, and then they can microtarget those individuals. They can do so to scale. So it’s not just, I need to find somebody in a community who’s vulnerable, and I’m going to target them specifically, and try to flip them and then they’ll be able to influence their friends and so on.
It’s all of that, but I’m going to do a million of them. The power of that is incredible. And then when you dig into what we focus on in the film, that Cambridge Analytica and Gloo were using church networks to identify people who were mentally ill and target them, it’s a really evil system.
CS: So let’s talk more about how churches use microtargeting and the findings you explore in People You May Know.
KGV: When I approached people about this initially in the churches, I talked about the modern outreach programs, and how churches are growing digitally in general. And it’s interesting, because churches have traditionally been slow on the uptake with social media and getting digital. Of course, outreach and evangelism is part of the church’s DNA, and that’s fine. And so you start to use social media for that, you’ve got live broadcasts on Facebook, and it gets started kind of slowly at first.
But then, what we found that really scared me is that a lot of smaller churches have adopted a complete digital interface. And this has happened so fast, because you want sign-in, you want to protect people’s kids, and you want to be able to track people and donations and all these things. And the churches themselves very often tell me, oh no, we don’t do that, we hire this software company, they’re very nice, and they do all of our stuff.
CS: So they’re buying that system from companies like Gloo, is that right?
KGV: Yeah, and there’s plenty of them. There’s Church Community Builder—there’s a lot of them that we ran into. And even if the church itself goes, well our privacy policy is of course we don’t share any data with anybody, the software company doesn’t protect the data at all, or they might be very bad at it. So if you go into the app—and they very often will have downloadable apps—you might find that your data is free to share with anybody. And of course you’ve signed yourself in, you’ve signed in your children, you’ve shared your vulnerabilities. Charles mentioned mental health, but it’s not just mental health, it’s vulnerabilities in general.
After all, as a European, it’s interesting to watch how churches in the States, they fill every need. You have preschool, you have a couple’s night, you have childcare, you have all this stuff that’s free and really hard to say ‘no’ to.
CS: Sure. I like the way you emphasized that in the film, because I think it’s a really important American reality that many Europeans probably don’t grasp. Just, the extent to which it’s difficult to get yourself plugged into a socially supportive community, which you need all the more because we hardly have a social safety net in America for those who aren’t religious.
KGV: Absolutely. Down here in Alabama, church daycare is the thing to do.
CS: And of course there’s also Vacation Bible School every summer. From where I sit now, as a kid who grew up in right-wing culture-warring churches, I do consider the evangelism aspect of these programs predatory. But I also see that there aren’t a lot of alternatives for most people.
CK: You can see that this happens in other functions of life too. Joining a church in a new town is the way to get quickly integrated into the community. It’s comparable to the role of the village pub in the UK. There’s a story that just broke in the past week. We have a track-and-trace system—it’s not working very well, but a track-and-trace system in Britain for COVID. And you go into a pub, and you have to download an app. You put your details in.
And that’s fine, but the pub didn’t build the app, a third party built the app. And we’re now hearing people say that pubs and restaurants have been selling this data to data brokers. But I’ll bet you it’s not the pubs and restaurants selling the data. What the pub and restaurant owners are doing is scrambling for a quick solution, thinking, we’re not coders. What the hell do we do? So they find an app, and they download the app, made by a company similar to Gloo, and they’re just harvesting data.
KGV: And it’s easy, and also in terms of churches of course, social media is cheap. Traditional outreach might have been much more time-consuming and expensive, whereas now using data you can easily find people who might be open to an invitation.
Look for Part 2 tomorrow, in which Kriel and Viken will discuss issues related to the coming election, including the Council for National Policy, a secretive conservative Christian organization leveraging these powerful tools to change the country. — eds

dcm did insanely well and every single bside charted for months and atlantis was the perfect follow up to it. shinee never left their spot in top 5 most relevant kpop boy groups in kpop even after 3 year hiatus. in fact they're more in the spotlight than they were in like 2016, it's universally acknowledged that odd eye/view was a hit but still didn't get as much recognition as it deserved and everyone knows they started the house music and casual clothes trend in kpop.
korean music critics and producers are all talking about how shinee's return has told the whole industry to shape up and tighten ship because shinee is the prime example of how a top tier idol group should create and promote. shinee are everywhere on variety shows and universally loved by viewers and other variety personalities key is constantly going viral. they have soooooo many new fans from like elementary school to ajummas and ahjussis everyone sees them fondly and respects them for their artistry nowadays.
i think it's safe to say that no other second gen group has managed to be continually improving and consistent in feeling and quality and the gp has def been picking up on it more than ever. i'm honestly so excited to see the members solo promote and get back into acting during full group hiatus i think their solos r finally gonna get the widespread love they deserve and not just critical acclaim and normal amount of market success
being on kshawol twt really is so eye opening to how many fans shinee have gained domestically during the hiatus but especially over the past few months... it's a lot, like... A LOT. i love seeing it because it shows just how evergreen and interesting they are as a group. many of these people are super young too (we're talking middle schoolers to high schoolers) who are super excited and attached already, dedicating so much time and support, they'll carry on and bring shinee everywhere for a long time, along with old fans who still are here. that makes me so so happy
of course internationally they've gained many as well but i feel like understanding the language and seeing that domestic side is so fascinating? it's always been like that for shinee, despite some difficulties and lack of korean promos in the past, people always had the dedication and the desire to stay with them and keep them active comparing to other acts. i love it

Design Beautification Analysis of Blue Buffalo dry foods packaging.
Blue Buffalo has build a strong brand for being some of the highest quality pet food one can buy for their cat or dog. Creating a brand that represents your pets roots to the wild and making sure your pet get the same quality food their wilder relatives get today. Promoting a grain-free diet and exotic ingredients. But is an all meat diet what your pet really needs?
The truth is your dog and cat are not these wild animals. Your dog is far off from being a wolf and your cat is not even close to being the size of a bob cat. And if you are willing to spend a lot of money on pet food it is unlikely your pet even lives outside. With those facts in mind, your pets require a different diet than an all meat based “natural” diet like a wolf or bob cats. Recent studies have shown that an all meat based diet for your pet can have long term side effects and can lead to heart problems as your pet gets older. That unlike animals that truly live in the wild your pet needs a small portion of wheat in their diet along with the vitamins and protein.
Blue Buffalo overstates that their pet food is natural. Though we all know that dry dog food is processed and made to last several months. Their design on the packaging uses images of wolfs for their dog food and highlights the meat flavors by making the packaging different colors to make the viewer over look the fact it is not truly 100% natural meats.
They make the viewer perceive that their pet food is made with your pets best interest in mind. That your pet is a beautiful, wild creature, who deserves the best “organic” like pet food out there. Even with a new tier of dog food that doesn’t have any of the substitute grains that are supposedly the cause of Canine Heart Disease (DCM), but costs a whole lot more then your average Blue Buffalo dog foods. Why would you spend so much money on dog food if it WASN’T going to be the best for your pet.
Design Changes:
They have six different tiers of dog food. The lowest tier is the only dry food with actual grain in its ingredients, but is also the most dull design. A simple blue and cream color, informative text, and their logo. Nothing else. I would focus on this design being the most appealing and informative. Being honest with their information. Changing their lowest tier dry food to one of the highest tiers.
