i wonder exactly how often it happens in yugioh where a monster card has somehow become a duelist and then at some point in the duel they literally play themselves as a card. that’s happened a lot of times, probably at least 5.

these are the ones i can think of at the moment:

⁂ those guys in the Virtual World arc, the big five so it happened five times probably ⁂ that dark scorpion guy in gx ⁂ yubel obviously ⁂ in the 5d’s crimson devil arc that never got dubbed i think the familiar guy used himself but i’m not sure ⁂ does zarc count that’s kind of an edge case ⁂ Genesis Omega Dragon in the arc-v manga sorta counts maybe?

i cant think of any others but there are probably more in gx and 5d’s

oh and like i don’t mean a card based on them or made in their likeness i mean that they are actually that monster

☕ Rin's development during Fusion Arc is a little sad (not in a disappointing way). Unlike the other bracelet girls she has not been shown to be close to Yuya and then she is shown praying with the bracelet girls over believing in the Yuya to take control of his awakening even though she knows barely anything about him except for Leo calling him a part of a devil duelist named Zarc.

oh absolutely agree, I always felt real bad for Rin because she was the only person there who didn’t know what the fuck was going on and had no support network, she didn’t know anyone in that room and she probably didn’t even remember how she had gotten here…she was just alone and she had to throw her lot in with Yuya and the others as much conviction as she could muster because she had no other options

Yuya’s Awakening Eyes Part 9 (Episodes 128-129)

I went over 125 and 126 in side notes considering that those two times were very brief.

How Yuya was able to regain control of himself in 127 and make it to Leo is still a mystery (However... considering the fact that this awakening wasn’t triggered by Yuya nor Yuto’s anger themselves it does make sense that Yuya is able to still have some control over himself [Although Yuto was shown with glowy eyes inside him so it’s still questionable what caused Yuya to regain control {particularly when Yugo and Yuri are dueling with their dragons out in the field}]).

So in comes 128 and it’s Leo vs Reiji and Yuya.

From the beginning Yuya is shown to have control of himself (although Yuri and Yugo are still shown to be dueling in the background in 129 so how Yuma still has control over himself is questionable. [But like I said the situation is similar to 37 with the difference being that Yuto is inside of Yuya and that while Yuya does have a reaction to the dragons being summoned it’s only mild chest pains.]

In comes when Leo is activating Arc-V and the crystal casings of the girls are shown to begin the absorption process to become one and of course

Yuya is triggered (due to Yuzu’s safety being at risk [and arguably Yuto with Yuri’s safety])

Leo still tries to get Reiji to join his side to go against Yuya and then...

Zarc speaks through Yuya (and he questions who separated the dimensions????)

Yuya is shown to struggle with his mind being taken over by Zarc.

Leo still tries to convince Reiji to work with him but Reiji refuses and tries to remind Yuya who he is and not a devil duelist that Leo speaks of (Because Leo’s story was some make believe am I right?) In response...

Yuya is shown in that area from episode 45′s but with no Pendulum swinging this time and the darkness surrounding it. (So it’s implied to be his heart).

Yuto responds that they are still okay and that they’ve held Zarc back before many times. Yuya agrees with this logic saying that this time they will ... win? Instead of too?

Yuya does appear to have some control of himself afterward. But once Yuya gets angry after demanding Leo to free the bracelet girls and particularly after declaring that he will defeat Leo.

(So technically by both anger and a strong desire to win)

Oh wait, he has the dark aura surrounding him again.

Shit, awakened Yuya is smiling at the damage he inflicted to Leo (This has to be the first time this happens when Yuya is awakened)

129 continues the duel with Yuya still awakened and right when it is Reiji’s turn.

He’s shown to be struggling. As the duel continues it’s unknown if Yuya is still in control or Zarc. Seeing Yuya use an Action Card makes Reiji believe that Yuya is still in there holding back Zarc along with Yuto.

It is confirmed for a split second before Zarc takes over claiming that he will be united again and become what he once was. But that before he does that he will bury Leo.

As the duel continues and Yuma is shown to XYZ Summon Dark Rebellion Clear Wing and Starve Venom are shown to have a reaction (although no dark aura is shown to appear in either Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon and Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon [also how long have you been standing around Yugo and Yuri?])

Leo claims that Yuma no longer exists and that he is Zarc now and while even Reiji and Zuzu believe that he is Yuya...

Yuya is still struggling and Supreme King Zarc eyes are on him this time.

A glimpse of Zarc is shown again through the dark aura.

Yuya/Zarc then proceeds to XYZ summon Odd-Eyes Raging Dragon and like last time Auto is shown with Yuya’s awakening eyes (I’m running out of space for pictures so spare me not posting it).

Just as Yuma is about to attack Leo’s monster Zuzu tells him to stop and that she believes in the Yuto and Yuya inside of him and to take back control (implied). This stops Yuya for a second.

However... Leo sent for the activation of Arc-V which causes Yuri to go almost invisible and scream causing Yuto to react in response and the battle continues. Before Yuma is able to deal effect damage to both Reiji and Leo Yusho interferes activating the illegal card (Restraining Sword of Impact) Leo had given him that send some swords to head to Yuya’s direction and tie him to a pillar (He is still awakened though and the dark aura has not gone away). Even as Yusho decides to prevent Yuya from becoming the devil by heading to his counterparts Yuya is still shown to be awakened.

(You two are still at this man? Yugo and Yuri’s irises are shown (Which how did that happen when they were all glowy in 126? Even prior to this whenever a counterpart that is not Yuya is how to have their dragons out in the field (barring Yugo vs. Yuto the first time) they are pretty much lost in awakening so what makes Fusion dimension’s case let Yugo and Yuri retain their irises? [Although to be fair Episode 37 did show Yuto snapping out of this awakened state through Yuya reminding him that this wasn’t the type of dueling he believed in])

One thing I have noted from this episode is that Leo calls Yuya Zarc’s double and Yusho even calls the you counterparts Zarc’s avatars.

That’s all for analysis. Only a bit left before Zarc is fully revived.

What should I do

This came out of me wondering how Zarc felt post canon. I guess a companion piece to I’m Sorry. 

Also merry Zarcmas. 

Yuzu opened her eyes and to her shock she found herself in a silent white void, floating aimlessly. It had been a few months since she had returned to existence after Yuya’s duel with Reiji and since then every day had been ... well crowded. While Serena, Rin and Ruri tried to be as quiet as possible, having three people in her head hardly allowed for peace and quiet. But in this void she couldn’t hear any of their voices, which unnerved her. As she continued to float a man started to come into focus, she felt her stomach twist into a knot as she saw his green and silver hair. Yuzu looked through her pockets for her duel disk as Zarc got closer, after minutes of searching she gave up looking as Zarc sat right in front of her. She instead raised her fists to defend herself in case he did something while he gave a mild smile when he saw her.

“What are you doing?” Zarc said with an amused tone. 

“Defending myself in case you do something.” Yuzu calmly replied as Zarc’s smile grew a bit.

“I would say I’m offended but you really have every right to be nervous.” Zarc said as his amused smile turned into a sad one, shocking Yuzu.

While Yuzu had heard from Yuya and Reiji that Zarc had given up on destroying reality, she had trouble believing it. Especially since the last time she saw him, he had taken over Yuya’s body, turning it into a draconian monster and was obsessed with killing everyone. But the more she looked at Zarc, the less she saw the devil that she had faced before and more someone who was just lost. And despite her caution, Yuzu just couldn’t leave someone like that alone even if he was the cause of their troubles.

“Zarc .... where are we?” Yuzu carefully asked as she tried to float away from him as much as possible but he could still hear her.

“In your dreams.” Zarc answered as he continued to stare down.

“Dreams? Is this even real?” Yuzu asked if she wondered what she ate. 

“Huh?” Zarc said as he lifted his head, startled. “Oh!  Wait, no, while we are in your dreams, our meeting is undeniably real. While I don’t have the full extent of my powers as the Supreme King Dragon, I can still visit people’s dreams when I want.” 

“Visit? Have you used this power before ..” Yuzu tensed as she felt her fists tighten.

Zarc started to smile again once he heard her. “Don’t worry, this is the first time I’ve used this power. I haven’t used this to torment Yuya.”

Yuzu gave a sigh of relief as Zarc start to laugh. “You really love him don’t you?”

Yuzu turned to face Zarc as her eyes were wide open. “What are you talking about?”

“Well I mean the very first thing that popped into your mind when I told you about this power was if Yuya was safe.” Zarc said as he gave a mischievous smile.

“I JUST DON’T WANT YOU TO MESS WITH MY BEST FRIEND!!!” Yuzu screamed with all her might as Zarc’s hair moved a bit from her shouts.

“Yuya’s a lucky guy either way.” Zarc said as he gave a sad smile as Yuzu’s eyes widened in shock. The more she saw Zarc’s smile, the more nostalgic it seemed as she remembered the countless times Yuya had given a similar smile when he tried to pretend things were fine when they obviously weren’t.  

Yuzu shuffled awkwardly as she couldn’t find the words to say. After a few minutes of silence, she killed the silence with a question. “Zarc ...... why did you decide to visit me?”  

This time Zarc shuffled awkwardly as he kept silent before finally speaking. “I want you to tell me about Yuya.”

“what?” Yuzu asked.

“It’s hard to explain.” Zarc said embarrassed as he scratched his head.

“We have all night. Try.” Yuzu stated as she starred down Zarc.

Zarc sighed. “My dream is ... was to have a duel where the audience, my opponent and even our monsters ... everyone would enjoy. A duel that would make them all smile from the bottom of their hearts ....” Zarc said as his voiced started to trail off. “But we all know how that ended up.” Zarc finished as he gave a cheerful smile. Too cheerful. “But Yuya ... he was able to do it. And I ...”

“You want to know why ... don’t you?” Yuzu finished Zarc’s sentence with sympathy in her voice.

“Bingo.”

“But why me?” Yuzu asked which confused Zarc. “Why didn’t you just ask Yuya?” Yuzu finished. 

Zarc gave a smile. “Yuya probably doesn’t fully know why he succeed when I failed. But you would, you’re the person that understands him most.”

Yuzu felt her face heat up once she heard his words. “what are you ...”

“while teasing you about Yuya would be fun, that will have to wait.” Zarc said with a smug smile.

“HAHAHA“ Yuzu sarcastically said. She then took a deep breath to calm herself before she answered. ”What do you want to know then.”

“Ray said that Yuya was my desire to make people smile given form. Does that mean ... Does that mean Yuya was always kind, was he always pure?” Zarc asked with urgency in his voice that Yuzu could guess why.

“If you’re asking if Yuya was always happy-go-lucky. The answer is sadly no.” Yuzu sadly stated as the memories flowed back. “After Yusho disappeared, Yuya ... was rarely happy. He really missed Yusho while everyone called Yusho a coward or insulted him, calling him a son of a coward. Yuya pretended to be fine, always smiling, always laughing ... But it was obvious that he was always crying inside.”

“This happened for three years?” Zarc asked, horrified. 

Yuzu sadly nodded her head in response.

Zarc’s expression worsened before he shook his head. “What about rage? Yuya never felt mad RIGHT?!” Zarc asked with a shocking intensity that scared Yuzu a bit.

“Yuya got mad plenty.” Yuzu calmly said as she felt her frustration rising.  

“no but ..” 

“You of all people should know this! It was because Yuya could get mad that you could take over his body!” Yuzu yelled as Zarc starred at her, eyes widened.

“If people were hurt, if people mocked him, if people who were important to him were in danger. Yuya would and did get mad. Yuya wasn’t perfect, he wasn’t an angel. He was just a person that wanted to make everyone happy. So please stop trying to simplify him as one!” Yuzu yelled as she defended Yuya.

“Then why?” Zarc said before he clenched his jaw shut. 

“What?”

“WHY DID HE SUCCEED THEN?!” Zarc roared. “How did Yuya succeed when I failed?! What did I do wrong? What did he do right?! If Yuya wasn’t a saint, then how could he keep fighting despite the pain, and failure when I cracked. Does that mean that if I kept going. I could have succeeded.” Zarc monologued as he buried his face in his hands. 

Yuzu stared in shocked at Zarc. She stared as the Demon Duelists, the man that had stolen Yuya’s body, the man that nearly destroyed all of reality seemed to shrink into a little boy. Unable to say a thing, Yuzu continued to watch as Zarc remained silent.

“I ... I don’t hate Yuya for his success.” Zarc struggle to say behind his hands which caught Yuzu’s attention. “I really don’t hate Yuya. I’m actually proud and happy that Yuya succeed, that he can make everyone happy with his dueling. ..... But the more I think about his success, I can’t help but feel this pain in my chest at my failure. ..... I can’t help but wonder if I did something wrong and ... that hurts.”

“Zarc ... “Yuzu said full of sympathy.  “but would you feel better if you learned that you could have never succeed. That your dream could only be done by a saint, that you were doomed to failure?” Yuzu asked.

“Yes! ... no. ... I don’t .... I don’t know!” Zarc yelled as he threw his hands to the side.

“Zarc .....” Yuzu said fully of worry as she started to reach out for him.

“I know that this is all  .. pointless.” Zarc said as felt his nails digging into his palms. “This visit, these questions! It’s all just self-satisfaction. Nothing I do matters anymore. Even if I learn why I failed, how is that going to change past. I still went mad and tried to kill everyone.” Zarc gave a small smile before he did air quotes as he said “tried” again. “I succeed. Ray might have stopped me but in the end, my rampage caused the end of the original dimension and everyone that lived there.”

“Leo survived.” Yuzu said hopefully.

Zarc’s face twisted into a scowl. “Don’t kick me when I’m down, Yuzu.”

“Sorry., I wasn’t thinking.” Yuzu apologized as she nervously scratched her face.

“The people that I wanted to entertain and laugh with .... By my own hands, I made their lives a living hell filled with fear and tears before I erased them from existence.” Zarc finished as his head fell.

“Zarc ...” Yuzu said as he touched his shoulder.

“The worse part of it is I can never make up for it. I can’t try again, that would mean stealing Reira’s body. But is just living my life knowing that I fucked up so badly that I became the exact opposite of what I wanted enough? Is that a fit punishment?! I erased millions from existence and my punishment is just guilt? How is that FAIR?!!!!” Zarc screamed as he stood up for the first time as Yuzu floated backwards. “What should I do?” Zarc said as tears started to fall.   

As Yuzu silently stared at Zarc, she felt a slight pressure on her shoulder. She quickly turned her head as she saw a woman in her early twenties or late teens standing next to her. She had reddish hair styled in two huge pigtails at her sides and purple eyes. The more Yuzu looked at this woman, the more the woman’s face looked familiar, it was her face just older. Yuzu’s eyes widen as she realized she was starring at Ray. Ray smiled at Yuzu as if she could read her mind before she started walking towards Zarc.

“Zarc .... you don’t have to torment yourself.” Ray said with a soft tone.

Zarc immediately turned to Ray as his eyes widened in shock. “How did you ...?” He asked in confusion.

“I’m pretty sure I can do anything you can do.” Ray said with a small smile which made Zarc chuckle.

“Probably. You did kick my ass twice.” Zarc replied with his own small smile.

“Zarc, I heard everything. You don’t have to keep torment yourself.”

“Why not? Because of me, an entire dimension is gone.” Zarc somberly stated as he clenched his fist in regret. 

“It wasn’t entirely your fault. You didn’t split the dimensions into four. I did.” Ray countered. 

“That was to stop me.” Zarc shook his head in response.

“No matter my intentions, I still caused the Original Dimension to split into Standard, Fusion, Synchro and Xyz. This isn’t your fault alone.” Ray said softly.

“It was my rampage that start it. All because I fell to peer pressure.” Zarc said bitterly.

Ray gave a small smile. “And because of my desire for my dad to live. He almost restarted the apocalypse.”

Zarc and Yuzu looked in shock at Ray’s word.

“What do you mean?” Yuzu asked confused. 

“When reality was being split, I kept my dad alive. Instead of trying to saving reality or as many people as possible ... I just kept my dad safe. And because of that .... He started the Arc Area Project that nearly destroyed all of reality.” Ray answered with a bitter-sweet tone.

“That’s not on you. You didn’t mean for it.” Zarc countered. “I wanted to kill everyone! You wanted to save them!” 

“Does it matter? I still fucked up.” Ray finished which left Zarc speechless. “But I don’t think everything that happened was all bad though.” Ray continued as she patted Yuzu’s head which left Yuzu speechless.

“What are you....?” Zarc asked.

“I won’t deny what you did was wrong but in the end all of reality is now in peace. The duel spirits included.” Ray looked at Yuzu as her face softened.

“That was never my intention! I tried to kill everyone!” Zarc argued. 

“Because we drove you to that.” Ray again countered. “Zarc, you snapped because our dimension, because we wanted more blood-lust. You becoming Supreme King Dragon, the devil, isn’t all your fault. Like my baby brother said, It’s all of humanity’s fault that you were created.” 

Zarc lowered his head so his eyes couldn’t be seen. “Why?” he mumbled.

“Huh?” Ray asked.

“Why are you being so nice to me. I ... I stole everything from you. Your future, your family, ... your life.” Zarc asked as he balled his hands at his side into fists.

Ray give a small smile as she stared at Yuzu. “Because I wondered if I messed up too.” 

Zarc lifted his head to look at Ray in confusion.

“Zarc ... before you had your accident, before you had your fame, I was a huge fan of yours. I wanted to duel you but after your accident and your change in dueling style ... I avoided you. I avoided you when you most needed help. I thought I couldn’t do anything but .... after seeing what Yuzu did .. I couldn’t help but wonder if I had tried to reach you, if I didn’t leave you alone ... maybe you would never have become the Supreme King Dragon. Maybe things would be different because no matter who you are or become, you always wanted to make everyone happy. And I ignored it till it was too late.” Ray said with regret.

“What should I do then?” Zarc asked.

“Wait.”

“Huh?”

“Zarc, while humanity is doing fine now. That doesn’t mean it’ll always be like this. When humanity starts to take the wrong path, show them the errors of their way,” Ray said with a smile. Ray then paused as she mulled something over and added "PEACEFULLY!” forcefully at the end which made Zarc laugh.

“So I’m just going to wait inside of Reira in the odd chance that humanity fucks up again as I review my mistakes?” Zarc said with a sarcastic tone.

“Yep.” Ray instantly said.

“But that’s pretty boring” Zarc said with a fake whiny tone.

“You’re the one that wanted punishment.” Ray said as she raised an eyebrow.

“Hahhahaha. That is true. I guess this is fitting enough.” Zarc said with a smile, a genuine smile that made Yuzu smile too. “Yuzu, thanks for listening to me bitch and moan.” Zarc said as he focused on Yuzu.

“No problem. Just don’t make a habit of it.” Yuzu said with a smile.

“At least once more. I still have to tease you over Yuya.” Zarc said with a cheeky smile.

“DON’T YOU DARE!” Yuzu roared which made Zarc and Ray laugh.

“But seriously .... Look after him will you?” Zarc said a serious tone which shocked Yuzu to silence. Unable to say anything, she simply nodded as Zarc smiled in return. 

Zarc then looked at Ray once more. “Thank you, Ray. As odd as this is. I’m glad you’re my archenemy. Couldn’t have asked for a hotter one.” Zarc said with a big smile as he disappeared before Ray, with a face as red as her hair, tried to yell at him.  

Yuzu felt a soft palm on her head as she realized that Ray had again patted her head.

“Thank you for talking to him, Yuzu.” 

Yuzu shook her head. “No I didn’t help much. But I’m glad that he’s at peace. I think he deserves it.”

Ray smiled. “I think so too.”

Succumb - 2

Sister work / kinda prequel to Succumb

Au where Rin, Ruri, Serena gave up their duties as Ray’s reincarnations and joined Zarc. Also Yu boys are the dragons here.

No pairings but can be seen as Apple, FallenAngel, and Predatorshipping.

The view from the Tops is as beautiful as Rin always imagined. The sky is clear of roads and smoke, the lights are dazzling, and everything is so clean.

A perfect place to watch Supreme King Dragon Servant Clear Wing - Yugo - destroy the Synchro Dimension.

The Synchro Dimension is disgusting, and Rin has no qualms watching people and buildings alike burn up in flames. The people and city itself are vile. Letting only those win and win and win have comfortable lives and making it impossible for those at the bottom to become winners.

Zarc has no need for such a place in his universe.

Some duelists -a blue haired one who used a bee-like deck and an old man using a card-like deck - who had dared to oppose her and Yugo told her that the Synchro Dimension has changed. That everyone - Tops and Commons alike - came to the decision that the system was wrong and were making strides to create a City where Tops and Commons didn’t exist.

“Bullshit...” Rin slips out. 

Rin was held captive in the Fusion Dimension for a couple of months, and in that short time everyone just magically decided that the world they were living in was vile and corrupt and wrong?

Where was that epiphany ten years ago? Five years ago? A year ago? Why was this decision made when she wasn’t there? When she couldn’t see the change with her own two eyes.

Stop!

“Oh, Ray?” Rin recognizes that voice anywhere. It’s like her’s but distinctively not. “Say Ray, when you split the world into four did you get a say in how the dimensions were formed? Did you make the Synchro Dimension like this or was fate just cruel?”

Silence.

Rin sighs, looks like Ray’s connection to her has been cut off once more. Maybe it was because of Zarc’s growing influence on her or maybe Ray doesn’t have the power to keep in contact with her reincarnations especially since she made no contact with them for fourteen years, even with Zarc’s coming and them being kidnapped by Ray’s father.

“Well, it doesn’t matter,” Rin walks over to edge of the balcony and sees Supreme King Dragon Servant Clear Wing flying towards her, most likely so Yugo can receive praise from Rin, “this dimension won’t exist soon anyways.” 

With Heartland already being in shambles from the inter-dimensional war, Ruri and Yuto’s job of destroying the XYZ Dimension is fairly easy and doesn’t take much time.

So with Zarc’s quota of destruction for the day met, Ruri and Yuto have decided to reside onto of the few still standing buildings. Ruri lays on the floor curled up next to Supreme King Dragon Servant Dark Rebellion. Ruri starts scratching one of Yuto’s wings and the dragon lets out a pleased mummer. 

Ruri laughs, “You always did like when I ran my fingers through your hair back when-”

When there was no war.

When people weren’t getting carded so they could used to bring back one girl.

When Shun was alive.

Yuto nudges gently at Ruri dragging her out of her thoughts and looks at her concernedly. 

“Sorry, Yuto,” Ruri smiles sadly, “I was thinking back to when we were all together.”

Yuto roars, loud enough to scare away birds who were nearby the building they are located at. Ruri stares at Yuto and a few moments later she understands what Yuto is trying to convey.

“You’re right, Yuto,” Ruri reaches for the card holder on her belt, the one where she only puts important cards like Supreme King Dragon Servant Dark Rebellion. “We are together.”

In the card container were four XYZ cards and Ruri smiles when she looks at them.

Fairy Cheer Girl.

Heavy Armored Train Ironwolf.

Galaxy Eyes Cipher Dragon.

And RaidRaptor - Rise Falcon which is covered in blood.

Ruri holds the cards close to her heart, “The six of us are together, forever.” Ruri frowns for a moment and sighs, “I just wish Sayaka, Allen, and Kaito didn’t scream when we finally found them.”

Serena takes in the sight of the harbor town in the Fusion Dimension, a place that was so close her entire life but never got the opportunity to visit or explore. 

Supreme King Dragon Servant Starve Venom roars loudly above the girl and Serena scoffs lightly, “Give me a second to look, then you can destroy everything, Yuri.” 

Yuri reluctantly obeys, he understands that the Professor has taken much from Serena - including the all the opportunities for them to meet in their younger years. 

Speaking of Professor...

Yuri growls angrily and Serena turns to see the man who started this whole ordeal in the first place. The fusion counterpart frowns, “Are you here to see Yuri and I destroy this town, Professor?”

The man is covered in scars and bruises, and hardly looks like the commander he once was. He looks weak and when he doesn’t speak, Serena continues, “Because I know there’s no way you can stop us.”

“Please...” the Professor breathes out. “You must stop this. You must stop Zarc.”

Yuri is about to fly over to the Professor when Serena raises her arm, making Yuri stop all motions and grumble in annoyance. 

“I ‘must?’“ Serena parrots back. “Are you demanding that from one of your soldiers or your dead daughter?”

The Professor’s eyes widen, “Ser-!”

I don’t even like role reversal, why did I write this.

Everything was so still and he hated it. Zarc was a lively person by nature – he delighted in it, the energetic crowd, the thrill of the fight. And even the simpler joys…a laughing child, excited chattering, the rambunctious spirits that he called friends – simply put, Zarc reveled in life, in all its chaotic glory.

He wondered if he would ever get to enjoy that feeling again.

There was a nervous shuffle from across the room – Zarc wasn’t alone, nor was he the only one who was restless. The others – a pitifully small group, numbers which had only dwindled since their formation, a desperate gathering of strangers fleeing the same terror.

“We’ve already stayed here too long…” the whisper sounded far too loud in that still room.

“Just give him more time. This is the only way we’ll be able to stop her.”

“He’s not going to do it! Even if he could, no man is going to destroy his own child…”

Zarc listened quietly to the conversation. There was no point in interrupting – although he knew full well that the man’s doubt was misplaced, Zarc didn’t feel like explaining that he knew this because he could sense Leo Akaba’s feelings to know that despite the conflict of the desire to protect her, the man’s guilt and love for his daughter was enough to drive him to find a way to stop her.

Of course, whether there was a way to stop her was a valid concern. But Zarc…he couldn’t accept that there wasn’t. There had to be a way…there had to be a way to make things right.

Akaba may have blamed himself for the situation, for failing to notice what was happening to Ray, for creating the system that allowed her to become one with her monsters…but how could he have known? He wasn’t an empath like Zarc. No…if anyone was to be blamed other than Ray herself, it was Zarc. He should have…he should have known, he should have been able to understand her feelings, he should have been able to do something! He alone knew Ray better than anyone else, he alone knew what she was feeling – that conflicting hunger and hatred for violence and chaos that slowly drove her mad…

It had been what drew her to him, it had been his chaotic and violent dueling that had attracted her. But she had hated it, too – hated what she desired, hated that she desired it. And as an empath as well, she could see it everywhere, see the violent tendencies of thousands, millions of people, all cheering for Zarc to brutally crush his opponent, which he didn’t hesitate to deliver. And so she had been driven to stamp it out, not only within herself, but within everyone – to eliminate chaos and violence entirely, forever. And if she had to choke out life itself in the pursuit of that aim, in pursuit of her perfect world, well…

He had seen it happening, why hadn’t he done anything? He had never imagined that she could go this far, true, but she had been suffering. He should have…given it all up, given up dueling, everything for her. A part of him knew that it wouldn’t have made a difference. People would have sought out another outlet, if Zarc could even have brought himself to disappoint the audience. And he would have been the same. Ray still would feel that within him, she would be repelled as much as she was attracted, she would despise him as much as she loved him…

And he knew she had loved him, as strange, as impossible as it seemed. But she hated loving him, and Zarc knew this too.

He really hated being an empath, sometimes.

It did afford its advantages, however. For instance, as the rest of the room tensed at approaching footsteps, Zarc knew that there was no cause for alarm – the nervousness was enough to know it was just the scouts they had sent out for supplies earlier.

“Ah…it’s just you…” a voice said, relieved.

“Anyone see you?” another asked sharply.

“Don’t think so. But…they’re getting suspicious. They can tell something’s amiss.”

“We shouldn’t linger here any longer. Someone get Akaba and let’s move out. If he won’t leave, we leave him, got it?”

“We can’t afford leaving anyone behind,” Zarc finally spoke up. “Especially him, he’s the only one who can give us a fighting chance.”

“I have my doubts on that. It’s too risky to stay, I don’t care how much equipment is here. It’s only a matter of time before they find us.”

They, meaning Ray’s worshippers. There were countless numbers of them, all devoted to serving her will. Some were eager and willing, to Zarc’s dismay – despite his abilities, it still astounded him that so many desired that crushing, lifeless, sterilized existence. Others served out of fear – that was more understandable to him, after all, Ray made sure to eliminate any perceived threat to her perfect order. They wouldn’t last long. Ray would know they weren’t genuine, and that kind of existence would take a heavy toll on their souls even if Ray left them alone. Everyone else…well, they gathered in groups like the one Zarc was with now, hiding in the shadows, rebelling and seeking freedom in the small ways they could. They didn’t tend to last long, either…

“You can put your fears aside,” a voice said. Zarc and the others turned to see Leo Akaba emerging, finally, from the laboratory he had spent the last few days in, working tirelessly. He looked wearily at all of them, and held up four cards. “The means of our salvation.”

“You…you’ve really done it? Those cards will…destroy her?”

“No,” Akaba said. An angry murmur surfaced throughout the group, but Zarc shushed them before it became more. “These cards lack the power of destruction; rather, they harness the power of life.”

That caught Zarc’s interest. Life, itself? He could think of nothing better to fight Ray with, the natural chaos of life was the complete antithesis to her perfect, lifeless order.

“With these,” Akaba continued. “I’ll be able to defeat her and seal her away…” Though outwardly he kept composed, Zarc could feel the man’s grief.

“Let me take them. Let me face her.”

“You?” Akaba asked, surprised. “You’re willing to risk yourself for this…no, I can’t allow that. It’s my fault that Ray did this, I must make it right.”

“You’re exhausted. And she’s your daughter. I know it will be hard for you to go through with this, to fight against her,” Zarc said. It would be hard for him to fight against Ray, too – but Akaba didn’t need to know about their relationship. He looked around at everyone. “Let me do this. You’ve all seen me duel – you know that it’s everything she wants to eliminate. She won’t be able to resist fighting with me. And I can do it, I can take her down – you’ve seen me duel, you’ve seen the tournaments I’ve won…”

“Face it, old man – Zarc’s one of the best duelists, and you’re just a scientist. He’s got the best chance out of any of us,” one of the group interrupted. Zarc could feel Akaba bristle at the statement, but reluctantly, he nodded, and slowly handed Zarc the cards.

“I don’t want anyone else to fall victim to her,” he said. “But it’s meaningless if I fall, isn’t it? You’re right, you have the best chance. But I’m going with you. If only…to see her one last time.”

Zarc nodded. He understood.

“And the rest of you?” Zarc asked. “Will you seek shelter, or will you come along? It makes no difference to me, I just want to know.”

“We’ll come. But if you get us killed, I won’t forgive you,” a woman spoke up.

“Fair enough.”

There she was.

Terrifying and inhuman, she was guarded by various worshippers. Their appearances differed little – their clothing, hairstyles, even the expression of disgust at the approach of the disorderly, motley group…all exactly the same.

“If you continue to defy Her will, you will be eliminated.”

Zarc ignored them and pushed forward.

“We will not allow you to threaten this world with your chaos. We will not allow you to threaten the people with your violent ways. Her Divinity has delivered us all from these base and primitive…” the worshipper gave a gasp of shock as Zarc shoved him aside.

“RAY!” Zarc shouted. Finally, she turned to look at him. Zarc felt her anger, her hatred of him and everything he stood for, blazing directly at him. Ah, but he felt conflict there too – even in this state, she could not purge herself of what she hated, and there would be her undoing. “Face me, Ray!”

“The likes of you have no right to address…” Zarc shoved the worshipper again. He had no idea if it was the same one or not.

“Do you enjoy this, Ray? This perfect, boring, dead existence you’ve made? Do you get a thrill out of being called God?”

Ray said nothing, but continued to stare furiously at him.

“Well, I say God’s a tyrant! And if you’re going to play at God, then let me be the Devil! So fight me, Ray. I’m everything you hate, so come at me.”

“The Devil lost,” Ray said venomously, finally deigning to speak.

“I won’t,” Zarc said calmly. He readied his duel disk.

“You chose the wrong side. You knew better than I the wickedness of humanity, but still you chose it. Why? I’ve brought peace, I’ve brought order…I’ve saved everyone. Why do you still stand against me?”

“Saved?” Zarc echoed in disbelief. It was amazing, really, how two empaths still could not understand one another in the end. “You haven’t saved anything! You can repress chaos, you can repress violence – but you’re repressing life itself. You’re just as destructive as what you claim to have saved the world from. How many people have you killed, Ray?”

She didn’t answer.

“You’ll never achieve what you want, Ray. You’ll never be able to destroy it completely – because it still exists within you,” Zarc said. This elicited exactly the reaction he was hoping for. Ray rose up, even more furious than before. The worshippers, too, squawked at him, affronted that he would dare imply that their God was susceptible to such horrible, base, human things. He paid no attention to them – only Ray mattered. And she knew he could sense her feelings, she knew he wasn’t lying – still, she was going to deny it, Zarc could tell. The duel disk beeped at him – his challenge had been accepted.

As he expected, Ray dueled in such a manner to prevent him from doing pretty much anything. She started to mock him, confident that order, her perfect order, would always be able to control chaos.

But the conditions had been met.

“I always did like to hear you laugh,” Zarc responded to her taunting in a subdued tone, knowing that it would be over soon. “But not like this. I’m sorry, Ray.” His voice became louder. “I have to do this. I wish there was another way, but I can’t let you continue to do this – to yourself, to the world. This is the end, Ray.” He closed his eyes in regret, and activated the four cards in his hand.

Ray’s confidence faded in an instant, and Zarc could feel the panic well up inside of her. He could feel the power of the cards working, a great chaotic force altering their surroundings, pushing the onlookers away, destroying the structure around them.

“What are you doing?!” Ray demanded. “Stop it! Stop…” She gasped as the ground began crumbling beneath them. “You’re destroying everything!”

Zarc didn’t quite know what was going on, he didn’t even know if Akaba had intended this. But somehow he knew that it wasn’t quite what Ray thought it was.

“No,” he said. “This is life, Ray. This is creation.”

“I won’t let you bring back chaos! If this is creation, it’ll be on my terms.” She reached out into the maelstrom, trying to shape it. She started screaming as the forces began tearing into her.

“Ray!”

Was this what Akaba meant to happen? He would never willingly hurt Ray, that Zarc was sure of. But it was starting to seal her, Zarc could see that.

“Ray!” he shouted again. “I won’t let you inflict this kind of existence on anyone again!” Whatever this new world she was being sealed into, he couldn’t let her go alone. He couldn’t let her make it lifeless and empty.

I would have done anything for you, anything but accept that kind of existence.

Zarc threw himself into the maelstrom.

Why am I posting this to a Yu-Gi-Oh Blog?

Because this song is currently my internal theme song for Yuu Singularity Event Horizon and the Aftermath, also known as the Zarc Arc.

If I could vid, I would vid this, but I can't, so I'm just going to talk about it.

The music starts very powerful and dramatic. Like our heroes, the Lancers, have come to settle the score and wage war against Duel Academia. There are damsels that need saving (and sometimes battling), evil ideologies that need destroying, and an evil man, ready to fuse the worlds into one, who needs stopping. They pass through various trials, loss many a comrade, and finally make to the throne, staring down the Duel Academia's King, the Professor.

Then, the beat drops, and things go south.

The truth of the worlds is revealed. The hero, our hero, is really the villain, Z-Arc, and shouldn't be allowed to revive. But, duels between counterparts are already on their way, and our poor tomato protagonist is being eaten alive from the inside out, slowly going insane. All the while, our bracelet girls are being sacrificed for the fusion of the worlds and the Lost Daughter, Ray.

But, not all hope is lost, for as the beat remits and the piano plays, the Lancers show their support and belief in our hero. Belief in Yuya. The trapped girls join in as well, and a father does his best to protect his son.

But, the beat drops again, and s*** hits the fan.

Our precious banana cyclist is absorbed by the DA's strongest, the living-weapon and psychotic cabbage. The girls, pieces of Ray, vanish one by one. No one can stop the fight between counterparts, not even the hero's father, who loses his life trying to protect his son. The duel between the last two pieces rages on, and even with 'encouragement' from his fellow Lancers and victory, the protagonist still falls...

Supreme King Dragon Zarc is born...

And so, the orchestra plays its last refrain as Zarc's being unfurls, casting a terrible shadow across the fusing dimensions. But, in all the mess, Ray has not revived. Leo is panicking, and the denizens of the dimensions watch in horror.

Yet, in the settling dust, the Lancers, the hero's allies, Yuya's friends, the people he has touched, have not given up yet. Yuya. Yuto. Yugo. They must still be in there. So, this last bastion of hope prepares to fight the Devil Duelist, who wears the Hero's face, warped though it may be.

However, there's still one last beat-drop, and Zarc is strong...

As soon as it comes, everything... Goes. To. Hell.

Sora and Edo are ready to throw down, but Zarc shuts them down.

Shun and Kaito bring it to 'em, but Zarc goes right through them.

JACK ATLAS and Gong rev it up, but Zarc tells them to back the f*** up.

Shingo and Crow get the fun started, but Zarc just comes in and ends it.

At the this point, it's just conjecture, but I have no doubt we will see them...

Zarcray Week day 7 - AU

Soulmate AU where the first thing your soulmate says to you is on your wrist. Cause I’m a slut for this trope okay.

Not very happy Zarcray.

This originally was going to have hopeful fruits at the end but I really wanted to finish this and I’ve been feeling really crappy lately so here’s the ending to match my current mood.

Love has always been a confusing topic for Zarc. He’s never had, or at least that he can remember, a mother or father to give him a parent’s love filled with what Zarc assumes is kisses on the cheeks and pats on the back. He’s never managed to keep friends for long periods of time and at the moment he can’t come up with anyone who he can call a friend. 

To top it all off both of his wrists are completely blank.

Zarc has been told since a young age that once someone hits their teenage years words will appear on their wrist. The first words your soulmate speaks to you. Yet here he is, almost twenty years old and apparently has no soulmate, someone to (finally) love him for the rest of his life.

Well, at least he has his dragons.

He tries to love people and show them affection. When Zarc duels he puts all his passion into making it a show, for himself and his audience. He climbs onto of his beloved Odd-Eyes and gets enraptured by the cheers and applause from his fans and believes he truly belongs and is loved.

Then one day he hurts his opponent.

Zarc feels awful and sick and wants to help the guy, but then almost one-by-one the crowd begins to cheer for him. Overlooking the fact that the other man is on the ground bleeding. 

The pro-duelist is confused because he believes that love is suppose to be compassion toward others and caring about each other. Not…not asking, cheering, begging, for more blood. He learns that day that love is listening to what the people you care for say and doing what they ask.

So when his four dragons, the only ones in the world who have always been by his side and love him more than anyone else has in his life, ask to destroy everything around them how could he say no?

When you truly love someone you become one with them and bring forth a new life, at least that’s what Zarc has been told throughout his life. So becoming one with his dragons to create the new life form known as Supreme Dragon King Zarc, he thinks he finally has gotten love right.

The cries and pleads and shouts for mercy fall deaf on Zarc’s ears. As long as his dragons wish for destruction so will he. And he continues to do so until one day a beautiful woman appears on a cliff to battle him.   

He says nothing to her and begins to blast at her. The woman doesn’t falter in the slightest and remains grounded. Zarc frowns that, his game has been ruin so fast - he enjoys seeing his prey panic and cower before he finishes them off.

Before he can do anything else to the girl wordlessly places four cards on her duel disk and life that Zarc hasn’t seen in so long begins to flourish around him. Then when the forces of nature get close enough to him he feels horrible pain.

He’s being forcibly separated from his dragons.

“YOU BASTARD!!” he shouts at the girl standing before him. Her stoic facade is broken and her eyes widen, but Zarc doesn’t care - he’s furious.

“Unforgivable, unforgivable, you are unforgivable!” he states as his voice begins to separate along with his dragons. 

He glares at the woman one last time.

Then silently, they divide into four.

Ray has known love all her life. From her father showering her with affection and kindness from the moment she was born, to her friends and fans who encourage her to be the best version of herself that she can achieve.

But she begins question it when she turns thirteen and her soulmate mark appears on her right wrist. Written in all uppercase are the words: “YOU BASTARD!!”

Her father takes the event much better than Ray. He jokes to her that her stubborn take-no-shit attitude will probably piss off her soulmate, or that maybe their a sore loser who will yell at Ray after she defeats him in a duel.

Leo’s words help puts most of Ray’s worries about her mark to the back of her mind, but still she can’t help feel like something seems off and decides to wear long sleeves at all times.

When Ray first sees Zarc it’s during one of his matches and she’s captivated by his dueling. From how he asks the audience to chime in when he does the math to deduct life points from his opponent, how he jumps on his Odd-Eyes and truly battle side-by-side with his monsters, to his glorious smile that makes Ray feel nearly as happy as he appears to be.

His duels are truly a performance and Ray wants to be apart of it.

However, she isn’t the only one who has the same idea and the wait list to duel Zarc has her scheduled for three months from now. Ray accepts the wait, but she still wants to talk to him. To tell him how much his duels inspire her to work along side her monster and how she looks forward to watching the duels he performs in.

When she tries to get close to his waiting room it’s surrounded by countless girls with autograph books, flowers, chocolate, pictures of himself begging to be signed, and hope that Zarc will speak to one of them and discover he’s their soulmate. Ray can spot his signature silver and green hair and can hear speak to crowd of girls, “Ladies, ladies! This is too much, you don’t have to do all this for little ol’ me.”

It’s when the girls start to scream and squeal in protest that Ray decides to come back another day and talk to him some other time.

Ray feels her body go numb when she sees Zarc’s opponent spill out blood on the area floor. She isn’t the only one; when she looks at the telecaster she can see Zarc’s colorless face and haunted eyes. The area is utterly silent for a good ten seconds.

Then people start applauding Zarc for his victory and the crowd erupts in cheers and Ray is horrified that everyone is okay with this. However, it isn’t until Zarc accepts their cheers and forgets his opponents injuries does she get up, leave the stadium, and cancels her duel with Zarc.

As the weeks pass Ray realizes that she isn’t the only one who has decided not to duel Zarc. Ray doesn’t keep up with his duels as much, because each one seems to be worse than the one before, but she knows that duelist are afraid to battle him and there’s only a handful of brave (Ray prefers to think of them as idiotic) duelists left who willingly stand against Zarc.

When the publicity announces that the final duel against Zarc Ray decides to go see him duel one last time, hoping that he’ll realize that people are scare of him and will return to the old dueling style Ray fell in love with.

The duel ends in the most ruthless way yet and Ray is honestly surprised that the man isn’t dead. Zarc pays no mind to him and being to shout at the crowd, asking if there is anyone else willingly to battle him. He and his monsters aren’t satisfied and crave more. 

He states that he and his monster have no equal, that they are too powerful.

That they have the power to destroy the world.

Ray stares in horror as Zarc summons his four dragons and they in begin to attack the people in the audience. 

Her father grabs her and both of them rush out of the stadium along with everyone else. Ray turns her head to the man she once thought so highly of and all she can see is a monster.

Apparently Zarc thought the same and he physically became a monster to match his personality. One that is cruel and vile and horrible and destroys everything in his path.

Many duelist try to defeat the monster but none are able to even put a dent into Zarc’s reign of terror. Ray wants to help in the fight against the Supreme King but her father forbids it and instead she helps other find refugee and stay on guard in case Zarc visits the region they are in. He never does.

Her father seems to have finally found a way to defeat Zarc and leaves to travel the world to find pure life energy from the flowers, moon, wind, and birds.

Ray stays behind along with the dozen other survivors and each day her father is away she feels her anger and hated grow more and more.

When her father finally comes back he wastes no time converting the life energy into four duel monster cards to fight against Zarc. It’s when the powers are being uploaded to the cards does Leo tell Ray the hard truth: Using the four cards will most likely kill him.

Ray is furious, she can’t lose her father to that monster. Not when he has stolen her peace, her home, her friends, her happiness. Zarc can’t take her father from her too.

So when the cards are finally created Ray takes them and doesn’t look back.

After blocking the trail so her father can’t catch up to her, Ray finally comes face to face with the Supreme King.

It takes a few moments him to realize that Ray is standing before him but when does he unleashes blasts of energy at Ray. 

Ray has been told by many of the survivors that Zarc likes to toy with his prey and pretend to fire at them when the blasts are meant to miss. Ray keeps her ground, Zarc has taken so much from her, she won’t let him get any type of satisfaction from her.

 The moment he stops and the smoke clouds clear Ray immediately places the four cards on her duel disk - the quicker the Supreme King dies, the better.

Life itself soon surrounds the two of them and it feels Ray with emotions she hasn’t felt in so long. Her chest feels lighter and bubbly and she almost forgets where she is.

“YOU BASTARD!!” The Supreme King shouts in anger and pain.

Her blood runs cold and she loses her composure.

No, no, no, no, no, NO. 

Her soulmate.

Her soulmate is the devil himself.

She must be in some sort of shock because she can’t hear a word Zarc - the devil, the Supreme Dragon King, her soulmate - is saying to her.

Ray wants to protest, to cry out in defiance, to declare that this isn’t fair, but no words escape from her mouth.

Then with one last thought of how unfair life can be, Ray splits into four.
