ive been working on a handmade art journal for a school assignment the last couple months+ i'm really happy with how these pages turned out so here they r! (i'm also gonna talk a bit below the photo dump abt how i did stuff so if you wanna read that it's there)

this has been a really fun project so far, I'm happy with it!

1- this is what the journal looks like, i decided on a red checkerboard pattern for the cover nd i added a skelanimal. book binding was actually easier than i thought!!

2- i never finished this but i decided to draw the killjoys as weezer for the blue album's 30th anniversary

3 - THESE R DOMR OF MY FAVORITES. it has 2 of my favorite songs from tttyg which are dead on arrival (left) and saturday (right) Saturday is like really underrated everyone should listen to that song please

5- my piece for the 20th three cheers anniversary ❤️ i was working on it for a long time and I'm happy i finished it :3 i also included lyrics from it's not a fashion statement on the left page

Thought I'd post some portfolio work because why not

This was for a specific assignment, of illustrating the same poem five different ways. I chose East Europe Triptych by Tóth Krisztina. You can read the full poem and the english translation here.

The first piece was inspired by old 70s hungarian cartoons and 50s posters. I focused on the general vibe of traveling through Hungary by train, which I find myself doing more and more nowadays.

2. My second piece was a digitally drawn zine. This time, instead of heavily interpreting a twisting the text, I took direct images from the second part of the poem and drew them, and then put them together in an accordion zine, with traditionally collaged covers.

3. For the third one I wanted to focus on the poem's theme of belonging and connection, but using the simplest visuals to convey them. I decided to make 5 posters all illustrating different aspects of connecting with another person, place or feeling, using the idea of overlapping shapes and colors, as well as some text.

4. I knew I wanted to make a collage, and I wanted to use some religious imagery in one of the pieces. I know it's not a very prominent theme in the text, but my entire life I've lived in a country where christianity and catholicism dictate many facets of life. I can't imagine a hungary or eastern europe without it. I treated this piece sort of like an altar, and the character as the virgin mary. The trash around her is sort of a messed up mandorla.

5. I wanted to do something completely outside my comfort zone, and since jewelry is a big symbol in the poem I chose to make some earrings. They were modeled after car parts, since in the last stanza it was used alongside the jewelry as a metaphor.

What I wish more people understood is that art is like cooking. Not everyone needs to be a great chef but everyone should cook to some extent. It is required to put fuel into our bodies, and we have to prepare that fuel. Same with exercise. A lot of people understand that regular exercise is part of a healthy life, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are athletes.

But it feels like most people don’t apply this perspective to art. Just because you are not an “artist” doesn’t mean that you should not be creating something that feeds your soul. It can be paper clip crafts, or doodles in your notebook, or knitting or LITERALLY WHATEVER THE HELL YOU WANT but please for the love of God do SOMETHING.

I think it starts with our art teachers exclaiming confidently that everyone is an artist. While I understand the intention behind it, I feel like it alienates people who don’t feel artistic, or aren’t particularly skilled and they end up frustrated. Not everyone is an artist in the sense that they have the mindset and technical skills to make meaningful pieces, but everyone should be a creator of some sort. It feeds that need in your soul, and just like food and exercise are part of a healthy body, so is art.

Human nature is to make crappy art and embroider crappy designs onto your clothes and finger paint and make a mess. All prehistoric cultures have instances of art dating as far back as tools and cooking, and it is just as vital to civilization as the things that keep us breathing. What’s the point of living without feeling alive.

been on my list for a while, but finally managed to finish this project over this week. the materials are just pins and a collage technique with various paper cutouts (and an occasional helping hand of fake blood and acrylic pens)
