Whether you want to turn your own recipes into a cookbook as a family keepsake, or work with a publisher to get the most viral recipes from your blog onto paper and into bookstores, making a cookbook is often a fun but work-intensive process.

How to Make a Cookbook

The process of making a cookbook will depend on your publishing route, but in general you’ll need to work through the following steps:

Concept: The first step of making a cookbook is to figure out what kind of cookbook this will be. Your cookbook can focus on a single ingredient, meal, region, or culture. It can be an educational tome for beginners, or a slapdash collection of family favorites for your relatives. If you’re looking to get your cookbook published, a book proposal is a necessary step towards getting a book deal, and can also help you pin down your concept.

Compile recipes: If you’ve been dreaming of writing a cookbook, chances are you probably already know some recipes that have to be included. Make a list of those important recipes and use that as a jumping-off point to brainstorm how your cookbook will be organized and what other recipes need to be developed. If you’re compiling a community cookbook, reach out to your community members and assemble their recipes.

Outline: Based on your guiding concept and key recipes, make a rough table of contents. Possibly the most common way to divide a cookbook is into meals (appetizers, breakfast, lunch, dinner) but cookbooks can also be divided by season, raw ingredients (vegetables, fish, beef), cooking techniques, or some other narrative structure.

Recipe development: Flesh out your structure by developing beyond your core recipes, if needed, and fine-tuning those recipes which need a bit more work.

Recipe testing: Hire recipe testers, or enlist your friends and family, to test out your recipes in their home kitchens. Have them let you know what worked and didn’t work, or what was confusing.

Photography and layout: If your book includes photography, at some point there will be photo shoots where the food will have to be prepared and styled for camera. Traditional publishing houses will likely want to hire stylists and photographers who specialize in food photography. Once the images and text are both ready, a book designer will arrange them together and make the cover design, but you can also make your own cookbook design using software like InDesign or old-school DIY-style, with paper, scissors, and a photocopier.

Editing: If you’re working with a publisher, there may be several rounds of back and forth as your editor works with you to fine-tune the recipes and text. The book will then be sent to a copy editor who will go through the entire cookbook looking for grammar and style issues, and indexer for finishing touches. If you’re self-publishing, give a rough draft of your book to friends and family members to proofread.

Many copy shops will also offer options for wire-bound cookbooks, and there are resources online that will print bookstore-quality softcover or hard-cover books for a fee.

Community cookbooks: A special subset of self-published cookbook made up of recipes from multiple individuals, usually to raise money for a cause or organization. Working with a group has the advantage of a large pool of recipes and testers, and is a great way to share your recipes with a larger audience while also supporting a cause you believe in.

Through a publishing house: If you think your cookbook has a wider audience, you may want to seek out a mainstream publishing house. Large publishing houses don’t usually accept pitches from individuals, but you can reach out to small, local publishers without an agent as intermediary. Things to Consider Before Making a Cookbook

Before embarking on your cookbook project, it’s a good idea to get organized, and to figure out what kind of cookbook you want to make.

Photography: More so than other texts, cookbooks often include visual accompaniment. Beautiful pages of full-color photos are expensive, which is one reason publishers like to work with bloggers who can style and photograph their own food. Not all cookbooks need photos, however. Some of the most iconic cookbooks rely on illustrations, or words alone. Figure out what role, if any, visuals will play in your book.

Audience: Are you turning recipe cards into a keepsake family cookbook, or selling this cookbook nationwide? Your intended audience will greatly influence how you write and publish your cookbook, whether it’s vegans, college students, or owners of pressure cookers. honestly maddening how poorly many people understand the basic idea of adverse health risks that are dose dependent lol. i mean this is everywhere. those diy 'carcinogen tester' family blogs that are always trying to go viral because they found microplastics in something. people not understanding that masks protect against worse covid outcomes by reducing the inhaled dose even if you might have already been exposed to some number of viral particles. every time there's a food panic about lead in chocolate or mercury in fish without telling you how much is actually in it and how much you'd need to be eating for it to be a concern. like not to do latourism but it is a very paranoid and ill informed mindset that relies on the sense that the objects around us can just be categorised dichotomously into Benign or Toxic and all you have to do is avoid all the bad things forever and your body will never betray you or grow sick or weak. anything can kill you in sufficient amounts idk what to tell you!

1. Volunteer Model--there is no pay for the beginning of this career. I wanted to make it as realistic as possible, so level 1 is all about building a portfolio and gaining exposure.  Mood: Confident M - W - F S S

If I’m being honest this is the most obnoxious friendship to ever exist.

He’s known you for way to long and is sooo quirky.

Like you see the text messages? That’s how crazy it gets between you two.

He always gets so philosophical and you sometimes just get so fed up with his bull want to tell him to shut up 😂 mostly bc you know he’s just trying to troll.

Although he means well.

As you’re best friend he knows everything about you and you vice versa.

Like he knows everything, dates, crushes, ex’s, all times you feel like you’ve failed, your accomplishments, and even your most shameful moments.

He even remembers something as dumb as you tripping over something from two years ago.

“Remember when you tripped over my math book?”

“How do you remember these things?!?” You’d complain.

He even remembers things like your middle name, the teachers you’ve had and even something dumb like the first two words you exchanged when you got to know him.

He’s very detail oriented on pointless shit and it’s just funny.

Aside from this he’s very corny and quirky as we can see with the text messages.

He makes a lot of dumb jokes as he likes to get on your nerves.

It’s always fun to him.

Even if he acts like he’s offended by your insults he actually lives for them.

And he just loves you.

Though he acts like a dork/asshole he’d do anything for you.

Something he likes to do is take photos because he wants to hold a lot of memories and let me tell you, you’re in a lot of these pics.

I could literally see him vlogging and he just randomly involved you in it somehow because you’re his bff.

He believe it or not he is able to cook so he’d probably make cute things with you like the snowman pizza.

Mostly cause he likes cooking and making arts and crafts.

He’s a softie too

He surprises you a lot sometimes it’s gifts and other times it’s just something crazy happening like one time he brought home a bunch of ducks and then swim in the sink.

Which yess was cute but you had no idea why he brought them all or what to do with them.

He also will look though Pinterest to get craft ideas and just do a bunch of like diy stuff.

And always tries to get you to make it with him.

He loves cooking so he randomly makes things sometimes. You also sometimes ask him to cook instead of you bc he’s good at it. Plus on bad days or your birthday he’ll make you your favorite food.

He does steal food from you. Because he believes in the “what’s yours is mine and what’s mine is yours” shit. So it can be annoying which is why you take his jacket with you when your going for a run, steal a shirt, use his laptop/phone for something, and sleep on his bed. Food wise, you make spicy food because he cannot handle it, which gets him off your back 😂

He probably is good at baking or cooking so he sometimes asks you to be his taste tester.

On a bad day he brings snacks and sweets you love.

Takes care of you when you are sick because what are friends for.

Sometimes goes shopping with you and gives advice especially if you’re going on a date.

“I think blue looks better, says a lot more about you.”

“It’s just a color.” You’d say confused.

“Guys don’t see it that way.”

“Guys don’t? Or you don’t?” You’d joke.

If you are near Eren’s age or seem like the kinda girl he’d date you’d best believe Zeke is shipping you two hardcore.

He’d try to get you to hook up and start dating.

One time, he asked you what you thought about him during one of your movie nights when you two were having a snack.

“Hey, what do you think about my brother Eren?” He’d ask, looking at you a little serious.

You’d shake your head looking at him, ��Mhh, No, no.”

“What? I’m just asking.” He’d say playing dumb.

“No, Zeke.”

“No but seriously, you two would be cute together.” He’d insist.

“I don’t like him like that.” You’d say.

He’d sigh, “One day you kids will realize it.”

He’d try to scheme the two of you together it just really doesn’t surprise me at all.

Personally Zeke doesn’t seem like the kind of person to have feelings for a girl he his friends with.

However if he and his bff have been friends for over ten years and she’s able to still put up with him he may just end up liking her.

He has thought about it before but pushed it away because he thought he was thinking too much.

If he ended up liking you he’d end up telling you which would be a shock to you.

It would be like those text messages where it says I’m freaking out.

But this doesn’t mean you’re friendship would really change.

You’d still have plenty to laugh about it.

You’ll still be listening to his obnoxious theories and questions about the world at 3am while you’re trying to sleep.

You’ll still participate in his crazy games that he comes up with and put up with all his other antics nonetheless.

People have told him he looks like Jesus and he actually tries to use it as an excuse.

“I saw that.”

“Shut up.”

You once scent him a text saying Jesus crist but it auto corrected to Jesus Crispy.

And he’s never quit ever since.
