Finding A Specific Missing Announcer Voiceline from DDR: Mario Mix
I just went though unimaginable torment (spent 5 hours trying to do this) in order to obtain the following sound byte:
What you hear above is the voice of Londell "Taz" Hicks (I'm 90% certain of this) who was the announcer for several Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) games, both in the arcade games and games for console, particularly Max, Extreme, and SuperNOVA. Based on ear and the release timeframes, he is also the announcer in DDR: Mario Mix.
The above voiceline has been an inside joke in my friend group for more than a decade. It has tormented and taunted us every time we boot up the game. It comes up any time performance is in the question. Speeches, presentations, concerts, D&D games, everything. I wanted this sound byte for the purposes of psychological mayhem and figured I'd do some quick searching and have it downloaded in time to get groceries.
This isolated voiceline does not exist in any archive I could track down.
So, obviously, I figured I'd get it myself. That it would be easy. And, I'll be frank, despite all my struggles, it could've been so much worse if not for the hard work of media archivists before me. Here's how I was able to track this voiceline down:
Getting into Stepmania/ITGMania/Project Outfox necessitated that I know a thing or two about where to get simulation files for the game. In fact, I'd already gotten the simulation files for DDR: Mario Mix, which is what prompted the idea of finding the same announcer. The files only contain music, album art, and step data (the arrows in DDR), and not, reasonably, anything from the game. So I had to look elsewhere.
Stepmania has a large customization and creation community that makes themes, custom charts, and, most importantly for me, announcers. The first thing I did was figure out the most likely announcer for DDR: Mario Mix, then headed to the Stepmania archive and started downloading. I started sifting through the files, but all I could find was this voiceline from DDR Extreme2:
As you can tell, these may be the same words, but it is NOT the same voiceline. It isn't smug enough. It's too supportive. This will not cause the torment I desire. I started to despair. I trawled every single other game Taz had announced for and only found this same inflection. The smugness of DDR: Mario Mix eluded me.
The next thing I did was try to get them from the game itself. The Dolphin Emulator has a really cool feature that lets you extract the contents of "discs" (in this case, a mounted .ciso file). Once I had that, I started to sift through, praying that it wouldn't be embedded in an obscure bin file.
Instead, I found this, in a folder labelled "sound":

What the hell are these file formats.
Briefly, I gave up on trying to extract things from the disc and started looking in different archives. I found one archive of video game music, that had happened to back up all of DDR: Mario Mix, and it happened to include some sound effects in it! I was hopeful, but after clicking going through every unhelpfully-named file, I was out of luck. Why would an archive lack part of the game? Well I went to the forums tied to the archive and:

Anyway. Searching this forum still provided me with some other options. Mainly, a post talking specifically about the msm and pdt files I was confused by before!

And this was figured out 11-12 years ago!! Remarkably, the download for the script still worked. So I loaded it up into VSCode, fixed some of the outdated code (specifically, had to change ord() calls to int(), some bytes stuff, I could ramble about this, but-), and ran it. This python code produced 465 dsp files. A dsp file is an older type of data sequence file that is common in older videogames and is used to play audio.
Since its on the older and obscure side, it's not something a native media player can play out of the box. The forum I've been searching through, it turns out, is actually part of a bigger website (hcs64) that has tools related to video game music archival, including audio ripping tools and, more importantly, a program that can play and convert dsp files called vgmstream.
I used the vgmstream web player to listen to a couple randomly chosen dsp files I had from the 465 I'd gotten from the python. Luckily, there was a small form of organization, and when I hit the files starting with 0003, I heard the sweet, sweet voice of Londell 'Taz' Hicks. And to my elation, the very second file I tested was the glorious, smug, tormenting words:

This is generally where you stop, because you've got the file now. But since I'm writing this primarily for my own archival purposes, there's a couple other steps I took after downloading the voiceline.
See, vgmstream converted the file to a wav file and I needed an mp3. This is actually easy enough. If you open up VLC (traffic cone video player) and go to Media>Convert/Save, you can convert it easily. I threw the file in there, made a new profile for the conversion settings, adjusted the bit rate to be the same as the wav file...then, instead of making the sample rate the maximum, like I should've done, I left it at the minimum and, uh...

I feel like irl I don’t even know how to talk to anyone about the shame and isolation that comes from being 23 and on the dsp.
Like I have my sister rightfully complaining about a 5 day work week and being tired and having to worry about car insurance and her rent. Her boyfriend being tired over long shifts. I genuinely feel so horrible for them. I remember recently she was complaining about it and I was just telling her how I’m sorry and she was jokingly asking “well just help me fix it by making so I can get money with no job” and so I jokingly said “go on the dsp”
But I felt that you know. Like what leg do I have to stand on when complaining about the isolation that comes from being on the dsp when there are people working so much harder then I could ever imagine. It feels tone deaf and insensitive to their hardships.
I’m just sad and sleeping in my bedroom and get money from the government. I feel like that by default just takes away my right to complain about anything irl. What right do I have to be upset over other people. It’s their tax money that’s going towards me.
I guess that’s part of the reason I complain online so much. I just feel like I’m not allowed to irl. Morally I’m just not allowed to say anything.
Or if I mention not being able to work because of my mental illnesses I get people listing all the jobs they think I should or could do. And then I feel even more guilty. Like I’m just not trying hard enough. Or I really am a massive mooch and bludge and have no reason to be here. I’m not contributing to society via a job. I’m not just making people’s lives better by being around. If anything I make it more stressful. My living is a constant burden but my death would be even more of a burden. So I’m just here. I don’t feel as though I have a place in this world. I don’t have people around me or a friend group to be an important part of. And that’s all my fault and no one else’s. I don’t have a partner. I’m not gifting the world with stories or art that make people feel something. I’m not inspiring anything in anyone. I’m not changing the world or my community. I genuinely feel like my dad hates me. I feel like I’m an awkward smudge on the whole family that no one knows what to do with.
I’m not progressing or moving forward. I’m not bringing joy. I’m not even just enjoying life in it’s simplicity because I’m so damn depressed all the time. It feels like every avenue I could go down to be worth anything has been broken. And yet I’m still just here, sitting in my dark room, being sad, hating my body, being ugly and taking money from the government while people are working so hard. It makes me sick but I have nothing left to give so I can’t even change it. Maybe I can and I’m josh immensely lazy though who knows.

Back in... oh.... I'd say from 2014 to 2021, I was pretty active on social media in the fandom. I met pretty much all my close internet friends from the fandom.
It was a very special time, especially when the WATGBS manga was releasing. I remember waiting (impatiently and excitedly) for the updated manga chapters for the Sea of Death arc. Opinions on the creator aside, I would not be kidding if I said her work really shaped me and helped me through teenage years (heck, even now!).
It was also a really exciting time when she began to stream and release physical media in 2020. While we had the WATGBS manga in stores (not anymore </3), we never had any other merch. DSP (the creator) was also pretty isolated from the fandom for awhile up to that point, due to online harassments. My keychains from DSP are still big treasures, though I never got the red Wadanohara one, aha.
Nowadays... I am not in the fandom. There's not a lot of content to discuss, as I understand the artist is going through things (to put it vaguely). I actually don't quite enjoy fandom spaces, since there's many kinds of people in fandoms and that includes the less kindly people as well.
I used to write fanfiction, and I may write some more sometime since anytime I want a craving for my source's ship, I am met with vividly horrific content on ao3. We can be more creative than that, right? I don't align with any fandom shipcourse (that's a can of worms I find too muddy to wade), I just personally can't read things like that at all. Haha, if you ever see any AO3 fanfiction of salwada (or another DSP ship) that is seemingly mundane, it could be one of mine from years ago.

Can TWS Speakers Block Out External Noise?

Noise isolation is incredibly important to every music lover. There's nothing more frustrating than being on a crowded bus or train and not being able to hear the audio properly. That's why in-ear TWS (True Wireless Stereo) speakers are very popular now. But the question remains - can in-ear TWS speakers really block out external noise effectively? Yes, TWS speakers can block out external noise to some extent. The degree of noise isolation depends on the type of earbud, with some using passive noise isolation and others using active noise cancellation (ANC) technology.  ANC is generally more effective in reducing external noise, but passive noise isolation can still provide some level of noise reduction. In this article, I'm going to examine the different types of noise isolation and test the effectiveness of in-ear TWS speakers in blocking out external noise.
Types of Noise Isolation
As someone who loves listening to music on the go, I've become quite familiar with the different types of noise isolation available in earbuds. There are two types of noise cancellation methods: Passive Noise Cancellation:  This method reduces external noise by physically blocking it. It is achieved through the use of sound-absorbing materials such as foam, rubber or silicone.  This method is effective in reducing low-frequency sounds such as engine noise, but it is not very effective for high-frequency sounds. Active Noise Cancellation:  This method uses advanced digital signal processing (DSP) technology to cancel out external noise by generating a counter sound wave. The sound wave is created by using an onboard microphone to sample external noise and then generating a signal that is the exact opposite of the sampled noise. This method is effective for both low-frequency and high-frequency sounds.
Passive Noise Isolation

Passive noise isolation refers to the physical blocking of sound waves from entering the ear canal. How In-ear TWS Speakers Achieve Passive Noise Isolation This is achieved by using ear tips that fit snugly into the ear and create a seal. In-ear TWS speakers typically come with multiple sizes of ear tips. They allow the user to choose the size that fits their ear canal best. I decided to test the passive noise isolation of my in-ear TWS speakers by wearing them in a noisy environment. I went to a coffee shop during peak hours and played music at a comfortable volume. The coffee shop was fairly loud, with multiple conversations happening at once, the sound of the coffee machine, and background music playing. I found that with the in-ear TWS speakers in my ears and the music playing, the external noise was greatly reduced. I could still hear some of the background noise, but it was much quieter than without the speakers. It's important to note that the effectiveness of passive noise isolation is dependent on the seal created by the ear tips. If the ear tips don't fit well, then the sound waves can still enter the ear canal and reduce the effectiveness of noise isolation. I tried different sizes of ear tips and found that a tight seal was crucial for effective noise isolation. Advantages and limitations of passive noise isolation Advantages of passive noise isolation include the simplicity of the technology and the lack of need for a power source.  However, passive noise isolation has limitations in terms of the amount of external noise it can block out.
Active Noise Cancellation
Active noise cancellation (ANC) is a more advanced form of noise isolation.  How In-Ear TWS Speakers Achieve active Noise Cancellation ANC uses microphones to detect external noise and creates an opposing sound wave that cancels out the external noise. This creates a quieter listening experience, even in environments with high levels of external noise. In-ear TWS speakers with ANC are typically more expensive than those without, but they offer a more immersive and isolated listening experience. I decided to test the ANC of my in-ear TWS speakers by wearing them in a noisy environment and turning on the ANC feature.  I went to a busy street corner during rush hour and played music at a comfortable volume. With the ANC turned on, the external noise was greatly reduced. I could still hear some of the traffic noise, but it was much quieter than without the ANC feature turned on. One thing to keep in mind is that ANC works best with low-frequency sounds, such as the hum of an airplane engine. It's not as effective with higher-frequency sounds, such as human voices. However, in my testing, I found that ANC was still effective in reducing the overall volume of external noise. Advantages and Limitations of Active Noise Cancellation Advantages of ANC include the ability to cancel out external noise effectively and the ability to switch the feature on and off as needed. However, ANC requires a power source, which means that the battery life of the in-ear TWS speakers may be shorter when the ANC feature is turned on.
Testing the Effectiveness of In-ear TWS Speakers in Blocking Out External Noise
To test the effectiveness of my in-ear TWS speakers in blocking out external noise, I conducted a series of tests in different environments. I used the same playlist of music for each test and played it at a comfortable volume. The Testing Environment and Equipment Used One of the environments I tested was a busy city street corner during rush hour. Without any noise isolation features turned on, the external noise was very loud and made it difficult to hear the music clearly. Presentation of the Result  With passive noise isolation, the external noise was greatly reduced, but I could still hear some of the traffic noise. With ANC turned on, the external noise was almost completely eliminated, creating a much more immersive listening experience. Another environment I tested was a crowded coffee shop during peak hours. Without any noise isolation features turned on, the external noise was loud. And its difficult to hear the music clearly.  With passive noise isolation, the external noise was greatly reduced, but I could still hear some of the background noise. With ANC turned on, the background noise was greatly reduced, creating a more enjoyable listening experience. In both tests, I found that ANC was more effective than passive noise isolation in reducing external noise. However, passive noise isolation was still effective in reducing external noise, especially in environments with lower levels of noise.

Overall, TWS speakers can provide noise isolation and cancellation. But the effectiveness of this feature depends on the model and technology used. It's important to carefully review the specifications of the TWS speakers you are interested in to determine their noise isolation capabilities.

Passive noise isolation is a simple and effective way to reduce external noise. Especially in environments with lower levels of noise. ANC is a more advanced form of noise isolation that can create a more immersive and isolated listening experience, especially in environments with high levels of external noise. When choosing in-ear TWS speakers, it's important to consider the level of noise isolation needed for the environment in which they'll be used. For environments with high levels of noise, such as busy streets or aeroplanes, ANC may be the better option.  For environments with lower levels of noise, such as quiet offices or libraries, passive noise isolation may be sufficient. Bandits resume killing in Plateau communities, over 200 people confirmed dead

For decades, there has been repeated mass and isolated attacks by armed men on farming communities in Plateau. While this has become a tragic trend, it usually escalates during each farming season when all the farmers increase the tempo of agricultural work on their farms. Apart from these attacks against the poor rural farmers, the farming communities are also ravaged by the persistent violent ethno-religious conflicts that routinely break out in the Plateau Metropolis. However, when peace-building efforts by state and non-state actors are able to mitigate violence of any form, the citizens are usually happy and make efforts to guard the resulting fragile peace in the state. But recently, crisis merchants and enemies of the state and its people have resumed their isolated attacks and killings of unarmed citizens who were going about their businesses. This is even as the security agencies appear helpless in apprehending the masterminds before they strike. In the last two weeks, scores of people have been killed in the farming communities of Mangu, Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, Jos North, and Riyom local government areas, thereby raising fears among the people in the farming communities of the state. From Rawuru community, Tapo (in the Heipang district), Barkin Ladi; Kwi, Kuru Station (Wereng) in Riyom; Murish in Bokkos, and Jwak Maitumbi in Mangu local government area, families are mourning the killing of their loved ones in the night attacks. A resident of Rawuru, Micah, said the last attack occurred around 8.00 p.m. on Saturday and claimed the life of Dachung Luka, who was shot dead at the Rawuru junction. Micah lamented that at about the same time the following day, some armed men in transit shot and killed two people at Kuru Station, and residents also discovered a corpse at the Kwi community on Monday morning. The Heipang incident, in which four young men were killed, took place at about 9.00 p.m., and the deceased was buried on Monday. The ugly developments made the natives raise the alarm that many armed attackers had assembled at Sham, Wereng, Kum, Byei of Riyom LGA, and Farin Lamba and Dabwak (Kuru) in Jos South with the plan of launching an attack on them, and they cautioned their neighbours in Chaha, Rangyel, Kaduna Vom, and Chakarum, to be on the alert. Although the police spokesman, DSP Alfred Alabo, could not be reached at the time of this report, the spokesman of Operation Safe Haven, OpSH, keeping the peace in the state, Capt. Oya James, said personnel of the OpSH are on the trail of the culprits. However, Rwang Tengwong, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Movement, lamented that no fewer than six persons were killed and two others injured on Sunday night during the coordinated attacks by Fulani militias on residents of the Wereng community in the Bachi District of Riyom LGA as well as Tapo village in Heipang District in Barkin Ladi LGA. Tengwong said: “Two persons were killed at Wereng, while four persons were killed at Tapo. The attacks were simultaneously coordinated between the hours of 8.00 and 10.00 p.m. At Wereng, a household was attacked, leaving one person dead and the other ambushed on his way to the Kwi community. At Tapo, nine youths were ambushed on their way home, four were killed and five escaped. “The survivors said the attackers, who spoke Fulfulde, laid an ambush at Tapo forest, sporadically opening gunfire at them when the unsuspecting youths were returning home from Heipang, the district headquarters. Among those killed was a 24-year-old student of Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin Ladi campus, named Tapshak Guwus. When Tapo was attacked, distress calls were made to the vigilante, police and Operation Safe Haven, OpSH. The vigilante and police personnel responded by immediately rushing to the scene, but sadly the OpSH outrightly declined to make an appearance until about 8:00 a.m. on Monday with no convincing moral justification for not responding, which is quite unusual given its usual timely responses to such situations previously.” Tengwong added that on Monday, “another dastardly act of ambush was meted out on Rev.
