The water filled my lungs
I screamed so loud, but no one heard a thing
Rain came pouring down when I was drowning
That's when I could finally breathe
And by morning, gone was any trace of you
I think I am finally clean

Chapter 7
She’s going to be ill.
Mika is a thousand percent going to vomit and ruin all the hard work she’s done to prepare for tonight. Her stomach won’t stop doing acrobatics and she’s only spent her day running back and forth doing tasks. Set up the decorations, clean the backyard, call the caterers back, and most importantly, that the supplies for the candlelight vigil for her grandfather are ready go. The list goes on. Everything she’s been doing was to keep her mind from drifting. She’s done all she can now, with three hours to go until the party, she has nothing to preoccupy her vicious thoughts.
Mika’s mind mostly consists of seeing her father and fearing the repercussions of her actions.
David makes her feel small, like she’s just a part of a checklist of his life.
Graduate top of class? Check.
Go to an Ivy League? Check.
Get married young? Check.
Get into the family business? Check.
Have a baby? Check.
Be a good father? Check.
Her father always had an uncanny ability to make her feel insignificant and dim. She believes his words, even if she knows in her heart, they aren’t true. It doesn’t stop the pain of knowing her father’s love comes with conditions. One’s that she has no want to fulfill. There’s the tiniest part of her, the part that is still a little girl, who craves her father's affections.
Mika wishes that part of her would shut up, would understand that there’s nothing she can do to make that man happy. She’s never been able to appease him without losing herself in the process.
Mika’s in the middle of retying the decorations on the staircase banister, gripping the ribbon tightly in her hands, she barely registers Damien’s hand stopping her.
She quickly snaps her head to look at him questioningly, her brows furrowed in confusion, before she sees all the brothers at the bottom of the stairs. Mika doesn’t like how they're looking at her. It’s a worried glance and it has her gritting her teeth in frustration.
Was she so lost in her own fears about her father she didn’t even hear all five of them enter?
“Mika, just breathe. Everything looks fine, the food caterers are here, and the sound system and bartender are already set up.” James tells her. “It’s going to be fine.” He shoots her a far too confident smile.
“That’s not,” She sighs looking at the five of them, “that’s not what my problem is. I mean, yes, I’m nervous but it’s not the party I’m worried about...” she states picking at the petals of the flower on the banister. Mika can’t meet their eyes. Not when they give her that look of pity.
“Your father won’t get near you.” Damien reassures her quietly.
While the thought was reassuring, it didn’t change the fact that her father’s cold looks and sharp tongue hurt more than any hit ever could. She shudders as the image of his anger floods her mind. Damien squeezes her hand reassuringly.
“It’ll be fine,” Sam’s gruff voice cuts in. He’s looking up at her, his muscular arms crossed over his chest. “Stick with me, I’ll be like your guard dog.” he offers with a crooked smile.
Matthew laughs boisterously and pats Sam’s back, “Sam can frighten anyone away!”
Sam’s eye twitches before he grabs Matthew by his head and shoves his little brother away.
Matthew’s hands fly up and he pouts, “I just styled my hair dude!” He walks away to find a mirror.
Erik rolls his eyes before walking up the stairs and guiding Mika away. “Go get dressed while we finish up. We got this.”
She doesn’t have a chance to argue before she’s being shoved into her room and the door closes behind her.
Around fifteen minutes before the guests are supposed to start arriving, there's a knock on her door. She’s at her mirror, staring at herself, trying not to feel the dread creeping its way up her throat.
“Come in.”
The door cracks open and it’s Erik. He’s giving her a soft reassuring smile. He’s in his own tux, a wonderful deep burgundy suit with a black undershirt. His own ginger hair is styled and out of his eyes, he’s quite handsome.
They were all handsome, she thinks, they were sex demons. Handsome and sexy is written into their DNA.
She turns to look at herself once more in the mirror, feeling inadequate. It’s the voice of her father seeping into the back of her head. She still hesitates to think she’s anything but plain looking.
Erik comes behind her and places his hands reassuringly on her shoulders, looking at her in the mirror.
“You look like a dream. I should know, since I picked out that dress.” he says proudly with a glowing smile.
Mika looked at her reflection, the dress was gorgeous. A wonderfully elegant plum, to compliment her bright green eyes. It didn’t wash her out and somehow made her darker hair look luxurious. Mika runs her hands down the fabric, trying to straighten out the silk. It clings to her body in a way that is flattering, but also makes her feel too seen.
“I don’t feel like a dream.” She replies, still feeling nauseous.
Erik shrugs nonchalantly, he grabs her wrist to drag her away from staring at herself. “Let’s go take a shot of courage together. Tonight will be fine, we’re all here for you. You don’t have to face anything you don't want to alone.” he encourages.
Mika nods, letting him guide her.
She plays Erik’s words on loop in her head. She doesn’t remember the last time she didn’t feel the burning sensation of isolation when it came to events like this. She was so used to playing her part at parties or events. Being a perfect daughter with her perfect family, even if it was only a ruse.
She easily follows Erik down to the bar and has the bartender pour them two shots.
“Cheers!”
She feels the liquor burn the back of her throat, but it’s better than the nervous somersaults in her stomach. She could do this.
Before her shot glass even lands on the counter there’s a solid hand on her exposed shoulder, holding her firmly. She looks up to see Sam raising a brow but with a slight smirk on his lips.
“Didn’t realize it was that part of the night yet.” he teases her.
She flushes a bit in embarrassment and shoves him lightly, he doesn’t budge. His muscular frame is much larger and bulkier than hers. She couldn’t move him if she wanted to.
“It’s just a shot of courage Sam relax.” Erik waves him off dismissively before walking away from the pair to go check on something else before the guests arrive.
As Erik leaves them Mika’s eyes roam Sam’s figure. He also is in a tux, but much different from Erik’s extravagant one. Sam’s is simple, a black suit with an emerald green tie sitting loose around his neck.
Mika reaches up to tie it. “Isn’t it too early to have a loose tie?” She shoots back at Sam looking up at him with a small teasing smile.
Once done, she runs her hands down the tie to make sure it sits perfectly. She pats his shoulders with a job well done to herself. Sam’s face is burning red as he looks down at her with wide eyes.
He coughs awkwardly, averting his eyes. “Thanks...” he mumbles.
She nods and chuckles to herself before walking away shaking her head.
As the evening progressed Mika’s emotions kept ping ponging around. Everything was moving in an increasingly fast blur. As members from her grandfather's company come pouring in, they immediately all make their way towards her. Each person offering their own condolences or some words of remembrance of her grandfather. She keeps her emotions in check, thanking every one of them properly. They lost him too after all.
There’s a lull in arrivals that gives Mika some reprieve from conversation. She feels herself deflate as she walks over to the open bar. She needs another shot. Her college friend group is mingling at one of the tables near the open bar and she smiles at them. Hoping that talking with them will settle her nerves some.
Mika feels someone watching her, not maliciously just watching. As she waits for her shot, she looks over her shoulder and sees Sam’s gaze meet hers while he stands at the door. Mika gives him a small smile and a halfhearted wave.
Sam shoots her a nod of acknowledgement. He’s watching out. Her parents hadn’t shown up yet, and a part of her prays they wouldn’t. Mika knows that her father wouldn’t miss a chance to save face though. It’s good to know Sam’s sharp gaze is watching. She feels a bit more secure knowing someone is looking out for her.
She wonders over to her friends after taking her shot, to try and relax a bit before she makes the announcement. It’s nerve racking that she’s giving up her title in the family company, but also freeing. James was right, her grandfather wouldn’t want her to be miserable. She just had to get through this party first.
Mika feels her parent's presence before she sees them. It doesn’t help that her friends' conversation slows, almost quiets completely. She feels the mood immediately change and she doesn’t want to turn to see them. Mika feels herself clamming up and her heart racing, she wants to run away. She does not want to be here; she can’t face her father.
Before Mika can even turn to look and spot her parents, there’s a large, warm, reassuring hand on her back. She looks up and sees Sam standing next to her. He’s not looking at her, but his glowering stare is enough to know who he’s directing that fire towards. Mika follows his gaze, and she sees her father, facing her, like he was about to come up. Sam’s aura is enough to send David running with his tail between his legs. Mika let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding.
“Thanks.”
“Don’t worry about it, James is looking for you. It’s almost time.” Sam tells her, his eyes are hard as he still follows her father's movements.
Mika nods, looks to the top of the staircase and sees James up there with the sound system and microphone. It was time. She takes a shaky breath. She waves goodbye to her friends and walks over to the staircase. Matthew was blocking one of the entrance ways and Damien the other.
Matthew gives her a bright smile, “You’ll do great, and it’ll be over. Piece of cake!” he tells her reassuringly. She can only nod as she hesitantly walks up the staircase.
James is finishing setting up with the sound guy and gives her a thumbs up. “It’s ready to go when you are.” Mika can only give a tight smile. She’s not ready. It’s now or never though as Mika looks down over the banister to see people starting to form a crowd and the media outlets set up their own cameras.
Mika turns around to James, eyes wide in fear. James gently holds her shoulders, “You are okay. You are safe. You can do this; Harold wouldn’t want you to spend your life miserable.” His voice is firm and leaves no room for discussion.
Mika takes a deep, grounding breath. She walks up to the microphone and turns it on. It’s now or never. As much as her palms are sweating, she can feel her legs shaking, she knows she must do this. Or she’ll be trapped with her father forever. Her father who is looking up at her with an unamused face ready to pass his divine judgement. She will forever fall from David Anderson’s good graces, but Mika finds that she is asking herself if she was ever in them.
No, she settles on, she doesn’t think she ever was. Mika had to fight tooth and nail for her father’s love, and she doesn’t want it anymore.
The microphone feedback sounds in her ear, and she looks out amongst the crowd. She tries to find faces she is comfortable looking at. Her friends are all close together, which makes it easy. She also easily spots Erik, Matthew, and Damien. Sam’s disappeared but that’s okay. He’s been acting as security all night, so he’s probably busy. She looks towards her friends, who are all smiling and giving her a variety of thumbs up in reassurance.
Mika can do this. She smiles at the crowd and speaks into the microphone. “Welcome everyone from Anderson Toy Company! I’d like to say thank you for coming tonight. There will be a few announcements we will be making alongside hosting a celebration of life for my grandfather, Harold Anderson. The candlelight vigil will be held later this evening.”
There are a few mummers of excitement, but they settle quickly. Mika grips the microphone tightly, bracing herself.
“I know all of you are here to witness me step into the position of CEO since my grandfather selected me...” she pauses trying to find her voice. Hesitant to make her next statement. “I am here to tell you all I have hired a new CEO who will be taking my place in the company, starting tonight.”
The room is filled with gasps. The once silent room burst into noise. The camera flashes aren’t helping the immediate fear strangling her. She’s almost done, she just has to announce James.
Mika brings her shaky hand up with the microphone, trying to finish her statement.
“I know you all were expecting me to step into this role. I was prepared to sacrifice everything to do this.” Mika’s voice is small, and the room is silent to hear her again.
“After careful consideration, I cannot in good faith take the role of CEO.” She’s looking out at the crowd, finding her friends’ faces for comfort. “My grandfather left me the option to be CEO, but he would never have made me do it. Not if I wasn’t passionate. He would have wanted me to find something I cared about, like his toys!” Mika smiles to herself, knowing, in her heart, she’s right. She’s making the right choice.
“I welcome you all to regard your new CEO with the warmth and joy my grandfather would have. Please welcome James Anderson.”
Mika finishes and takes a step back, handing James the microphone.
“You did great,” he whispers to her before taking the microphone and walking forward to address the crowd.
Mika watches James for around two minutes before her nerves finally get to her and she needs to get away. James words mingle in the air, and she should be paying attention, but she’s truly going to be sick.
Mika slinks to the back staircase, the one closer to the kitchen in the back. She knows everyone's at the front, preoccupied by James, so no one should be in the back. She rushes into the hall bathroom and locks it. She’s looking at herself in the mirror and it feels like an out of body experience. Her dress feels too tight, her eyes are glassy, and she can feel the sweat dripping down her back. Mika only has about another split second before she hovers over the toilet retching up her nerves and the two shots of liquor in her stomach. She hasn’t been able to eat all day and the way she’s dry heaving proves it.
She feels better after the bile settles and her stomach stops acting like it wants to vacate her body. She stands back up, on shaky legs and wipes her mouth over the sink. Mika looks at herself again, this time she’s able to recognize herself. Her green eyes pierce through the mirror back at her. She’s in once piece, the world didn’t end, and she has some newfound freedom.
Mika nods to herself and leaves the bathroom.
“You ungrateful brat!” Mika’s vision goes blurry as she’s shoved against the closing bathroom door. There’s a tight, vice like, grip on her forearm. The voice hisses out to her, “You were left everything, and you take it all for granted!”
Mika looks up and sees her father’s cold eyes glaring down at her. Of course, he’d notice her walking away and he knew she’d be in the back. He knows this house like the back of his hand.
Mika tries to pry her arm away from her father, but his grip is iron. He pulls her closer, “You have let our family name tarnish within this company!” he whispers in his quiet rage.
“Let. Me. Go.” Mika growls out at her father, trying to pry his hand off her.
“No! Not until you understand that this is the biggest mistake you’ve ever made!”
Mika’s eyes are filled with fear as she looks to where the crowd is. Too far away. Everyone’s too far away. She can still hear James on the microphone discussing future plans and answering questions. She’s on her own. She squeezes her eyes shut; she should have just stayed upstairs.
“What are you going to do with that business degree, huh? Don’t you dare think I’ll be paying for those student loans!”
Mika flinches as she hears his voice, the tone, the anger... it’s making her shrink back into herself. She’s looking at the ground, pressing herself as close to the wall as possible. Mika should have known that he would corner her. David Anderson never made a scene public, especially when it came to discipling her. He always knew how to make her feel insignificant, even in public.
“I mean really Mika,” he scoffs at her, “did you really think you could just sleep your way out of your responsibilities? Whose son are you fucking to mess with me?! Who’s James?” David spits out.
His glare is so fierce she shrinks back into herself. She feels the hot shame of tears pricking her eyes and she tries to turn away from him.
“Look at me when I’m talking to you-” David’s voice cuts off.
The tight, bruising grip on Mika’s arm is gone suddenly and she sees someone step between them. Forcing her father to back up considerably.
“Didn’t you hear her? She said, let go.” Mika’s head whips up and sees Sam’s broad back. He’s using his large frame to block David; she can’t see her father past Sam’s muscular form.
Sam’s voice is low and demanding, she almost didn’t recognize it. She can see that Sam has her father’s hand tight in his grip. Crushingly tight.
“What are you deaf? Answer me.” Sam pushes, taking an intimidating step towards David.
“How dare you!” David growls out. He’s frantically trying to wiggle out of Sam’s inhuman grip. Fear filled his eyes.
Mika doesn’t think she’s ever seen her father afraid. He always seemed so untouchable.
“How dare I?” Sam questions back with a dry laugh and a tone that’s dangerously dark. Sam’s still gripping David’s hand. His grip is so tight, her father’s hand is a ghastly white.
“I’m not the one who’s attacking their own kid, am I?”
David scoffs, “I’m not hurting her. This is family business and none of your concern!” her father's voice cracks, giving away his false bravado.
“Oh? You sure about that?” Sam replies in irritation, he turns back towards Mika, who’s just been staring at his back. His face is hard as he narrows in on her forearm. She’s been clutching her arm to herself, trying to seem as tiny as possible. His green eyes look down, making eye contact with her, they soften as he takes her in.
“Can I see?” He motions quietly for her arm; she just nods numbly and holds her arm out hesitantly for him.
His touch is gentle, almost feather light, as he looks down and sees the hand shaped bruise forming. She sees his eyes flicker gold as his brow furrows. He clicks in tongue in irritation. He gently holds her arm out for David to see.
“She fell.” Her father says without hesitation.
She hears the bones crack with a sickening snap before she hears her father’s yelp of pain. Sam has broken or at the very least, severely fractured, her father’s hand.
“It’s in the shape of your hand... I suggest you apologize and leave before I shatter all the bones in your hand and convince James to fire you. Wouldn’t that be a scandal?” Sam threatens, his voice low and clearly angry.
His eyes are burning with rage, as he stares down at David. Sam almost towers over her father in this moment. As Mika stands next to Sam, she wonders how she was ever afraid of this small man, who is trying desperately to cling onto some power.
“Mika, I am your father! He can’t do this to me!” he shouts, trying to leer around Sam and force Mika to look at him. Force her to listen.
She almost would have, if it wasn’t for Sam. She’s gripping onto his suit jacket, clinging to his back. Sam turns to her briefly, “He needs to apologize to you.” Sam growls out.
She hears more bones cracking; Sam isn’t letting up until David apologizes to her.
The pain sends David over the edge, “I’m sorry! I’m sorry just let go of me!” her father cries out.
Sam doesn’t stop glaring but releases his hold, “Piss poor excuse of a father.” Sam bites out glaring down at David.
David clutches his fist to his chest, his fierce glare flighting between her and Sam. Mika hears the noise of the crowd dispersing, knowing that James is done with his announcements. Mika sees her mother walking towards them with a quirked brow.
“David what happened?” She asks him casually, looking lazily between Mika and Sam. “Forget it Laura, we’re leaving.” David says clearly biting his tongue.
Mika’s mother doesn’t say anything, just gives the briefest of waves as she rolls her eyes before walking behind her husband to exit.
Sam stays in front of Mika until he knows that her parents have left his line of sight. He turns around to face her, but her grip is still tight on his suit. Her body trembles as she leans her forehead against his back.
“Sorry, I...” Mika tries to talk but she just feels how dry her mouth is. She’s trying to breathe, but the whole event has her head swimming.
Sam gently coaxes her hand off and pulls her into his chest. One arm wrapped tightly around her body, rubbing soothing circles into her back. “It’s okay, it’s over.” he whispers into her hair.
She stays hidden in Sam’s embrace for a while. It isn’t until she hears more footsteps coming their way that she feels the need to pull back. She’s still in front of the only guest bathroom and she doesn’t need to be seen right now.
Mika looks down at her arm and makes a face, “I can’t cover this up...” she mumbles looking at the disgusting handprint on her forearm. It’s a ghastly purple with yellows flowering underneath it.
Her father’s left worse on her before.
“Stay put, I’m going to grab Erik. I’m sure he can help.” Sam tells her reassuringly. He waits for her to agree before running off.
Mika stands off to the side, holding her arm behind her back. She only noticed a handful of guests walking her way, all to use the restroom. She’s still safely tucked away from the major crowd. It doesn’t take more than a few minutes for Sam to come around the corner with Erik hot on his heels.
Sam looks over to Erik, like his brother has all the answers he needs. Mika pulls her arm forward for him to look over it. She can’t look them in the eyes, embarrassment flushing her face as she looks down. Her eyes spot Sam’s fists curling and uncurling in unspent frustration.
Erik hums in thought, before gently escorting her back upstairs. “I have something to fix this fashion wise. It’ll be fine.” he reassures.
Mika keeps her head down as Erik takes her into his room. She just stares blankly at the large bruise on her arm. Wishing she wasn’t so afraid, or that she could be different. Sam was the complete opposite of her. He came right up to her father and had no issues telling him to fuck off. Mika had never seen her father in that light. One where he was fearful and tiny. Seeing David like that, the man who could make her feel like she was nothing more than a pawn in a chess game...he was just as easily broken as her. Had he always been so small and frail?
“Foul man, I can’t believe he thought he could grab you like that! It’s a nasty bruise love.” Erik mumbles under his breath and he goes to dig around in his bin of costume pieces he was working on.
Erik’s daytime job of working as a tailor and designer paid off in moments like this. He had so many side projects he was working on, he just kept things and usually it worked out. Like in this moment as he pulls a gorgeous pair of black opera gloves out.
“If anyone asks you about the gloves, you’ve had them this whole time. Just gaslight them. Be confident.” he tells her with a wave.
She lets out a soft laugh, “Thank you.”
“Don’t mention it, just make sure you see Sam before you go out to mingle.” Erik says with his arms crossed. “He won’t say it, but he was worried. I haven’t seen him that furious in a minute.”
She’s pulling the gloves on and nods her head in acknowledgement. She needed to thank Sam properly.
Mika goes back down to the main entrance. She sees everyone has scattered about again. Off towards the side of the entryway, James is being interviewed by one of the many news outlets. She tries to avoid that, quickly walking in the opposite direction. The last thing she needs right now is a camera in her face. Mika’s eyes hunt to find Sam. She finally sees him leaning against the wall of the dining room. She smiles softly as she walks over to him.
His eyes catch hers and Sam perks up in attention. “You okay?” He asks her once she’s closer.
“As good as I can be.” Mika gives a shrug. She notices Sam’s eyes burning a hole in her arm, where they both know the bruise from David is.
“Thank you by the way...I don’t know what he would have done if you hadn’t stepped in.” Mika admits softly, trying to cover her arm with her hand.
The bruise may be hidden, but it still feels like a raw, open wound with the way Sam’s heavy gaze sits on it.
“I should have been quicker... You weren’t supposed to be alone.” he murmurs as he looks up at her. His eyes are so intense when he locks his with Mika’s it sends a chill down her back.
She’s moving before she can really register her actions. Mika grabs Sam’s hands, holding them tightly. “You were there, which is better than most...” her eyes fall to where their hands connect, “I’ve had worse.” she murmurs.
Sam opens his mouth to respond, but what he sees over her shoulder has him relaxing a bit. He gives her a crocked smile and nudges her. “Your friends are looking for you. Go, we can talk later.”
Mika gives him a puzzled look before turning to look. Her small group of friends are congregating at the closest standing table just watching her. One of them wiggles their brows suggestively at her. She flushes and rolls her eyes at them.
“I, uh, yeah. We’ll talk later.” Mika rushes out and turns on her heels to her friends. She hears Sam laughing behind her.
“Sooooooo,” one of her closest friends, Suzu, teases with a vicious grin, “Who is big, bulky, and broody?”
Mika groans and reaches over to swat at her friend. A blush still creeping up her neck. “He’s just a friend! Could you not?”
Her friend just hums in amusement, “Sure, friends. Haven’t heard that one before.”
Mika groans in annoyance.
The night ends with the vigil for her grandfather. James and her usher everyone out to the backyard. Damien and Matthew hand out candles to each person as they go through the doors. Once outside Sam and Erik are lighting the candles. By the time Mika and James make it outside, there’s little space left. Almost everyone who came for the announcement stayed for the vigil to honor her grandfather.
It warms her heart, knowing so many people did truly care.
“Thank you all once again for coming, I’d like to take this time to talk about my grandfather, Harold Anderson. He gifted me so many things throughout the years, but nothing will ever compare to the love he left me.” She looks out at the crowd and her eyes stop as she looks at the incubi brothers who have steamrolled their way into her life.
“I hope we all learn to love and give back like my grandfather.” Mika says sincerely with a smile.

Her 'Near Death' Experience
Platonic Reader X Incubi
So, my charger just caught on fire like two hours ago. Thus, this fic was born.
Mika laid on the couch, her head on Damien’s lap as he gently played with her hair. Erik sat on the other end of the couch, giving her a foot massage, and Sam sat on the floor as Mika idly combed through his hair, using her free hand to scroll on TikTok. James and Matthew were preparing snacks for their movie night, and the others had decided to just relax as they waited.
Finally, James and Matthew joined the group, setting the food, which ranged from popcorn to candy to cheesecake, on the large coffee table. Mika looked at the charge on her phone, which read 23 percent, and sat up. “I’m gonna go plug my phone up, I’ll be quick.”
Sam rolled his eyes, silently mourning the feeling of her fingers against his scalp. “Hurry, doofus. I wanna watch this movie.”
Mika nodded before rushing up the stairs and walking in her room. She walked over towards the outlet near her bed, quickly finding her charger. It was pretty worn out, some of the wires visible, and she was definitely due to buy a new one. I’ll buy one later this week.
However, as Mika went to pick it up from her floor, the sudden popping sound and flames made her fall backwards and shriek. “AOMARIS, IZROUL, ZECEARU, RAESTRAO, UZAERIS”
With each summoning, the bright white light and gust of wind that would occur with a summoning became a few seconds longer before finally dying out. The incubi all stared at the odd sight they’d been called to, and Mika, who was sitting against the furthest wall, looking almost deathly pale.
James was the first to speak, walking towards Mika as she seemed to have a moment of realization. “Miss, is everything alright?”
Mika began to remember what’d happened, and before she could defend her impromptu summoning of the boys, Damien began to chuckle quietly, making Mika glare at him in disbelief. “Don’t laugh at me, I thought I was gonna die!” She said, quickly standing up.
Damien cleared his throat and stopped laughing but became hysterical as Matthew gasped in horror. “DIE?”
Erik chuckled slightly, walking towards her and gently bringing her knuckles to his lips. “Now Princess, you know we’d protect you from anything.”
Sam began to grow impatient, just wanting to watch the damn movie. “Doofus, what the hell did you call us for? And what’s that smell?” He asked, making the others notice the slight burning smell in the air.
Mika began to glare at the floor, as if it were the cause of her predicament. “My charger just sparked, and I thought it had caught on fire.” she mumbled, and James cleared his throat, obviously amused.
He walked over to the charger, which had completely snapped, and lifted the two pieces up to show the others. “You mean, this charger?”
As Mika looked at the state of her charger, her jaw dropped. “How does that even happen?” Matthew asked, laughing in disbelief.
Erik raised an eyebrow, smirking. “Princess, if I may. I believe we’d discussed you needing a new charger soon. Would-” He was cut off by his own giggles. “Would this be the charger in question?”
Mika began to laugh, holding her hand over her mouth as she tried to take in everything that happened. It wasn’t long before all of the incubi were laughing as well. Sam, Mika and Matthew ended up curling over themselves on the floor while Erik, James and Damien were standing, trying to hold themselves upright. Eventually the group calmed down and went to watch the movie. The rest of the night was perfect, even with the constant teasing and jokes about Mika’s ‘near death’ experience.

Can you write a fic (or headcanon if you prefer) about the boys helping a sick MC? Or an MC who's on her period? Love your work by the way
Thank you for the compliment!:D Hope you enjoy!
Fever-Incubi x Mika
(Platonic:3)
Cw: Vomit
Mika laid in bed blankly staring at the wall. She grabbed her phone and checked the time, 4:37am. She sighed and immediately set the phone back down as the light irritated her already throbbing head. Why can’t I sleep?! She thought. Groaning, Mika kicked the blanket off of her as she was sweating quite profusely. But as soon as she took the blanket off, she started to shiver as she felt cold. This is awful. She was dog tired yet couldn’t sleep at all. Suddenly, Mika got a nauseous feeling in her stomach. She adjusted her position to lay on her back, hoping that would keep it down. But she couldn’t help as she quickly got up, rushed to the bathroom, and vomited. Mika hadn’t eaten much, so it was mostly dry heaving above the toilet. She sighed as she sunk down to lay on the bathroom floor, her head against the cold tile sort of helping with the throbbing. Mika knew she had to get up eventually, but her body felt limp. Her eyes slowly drifted shut and she finally found sleep.
Later that morning, the boys were in the dining room. James and Matthew were setting the table with breakfast as Sam, Erik, and Damien sat at the table waiting. James set down the final plate and they noticed Mika still wasn’t downstairs.
“Huh,” Matthew stated, “Mika’s still not up yet?”
“Hmm. She’s usually up before Sam at least.” Damien stated and, while Sam didn’t want to, he couldn’t help but nod in agreement.
James checked the time on his watch, 10:06, “Perhaps we should go check on her.”
“Maybe she just wants to sleep in today,” Erik chimed in, “It is the weekend after all.”
“Her breakfast’s just gonna have to be cold then.” Sam said matter of factly.
“I don’t know, maybe we should wait for her a bit longer.” Matthew said, but Sam had already started digging into his food. James rolled his eyes at him.
The boys had all finished eating and Mika still wasn’t downstairs. “She never usually sleeps this late.” James said started to get a bit concerned.
“Relax, James. I’ll go wake her up.” Sam grunted as he stood up and made his way up to her room. When he got outside her door, he knocked a couple times. “Time to get up, doofus!” He waited about 30 seconds before he knocked again. Still no answer. Sam opened the door and let himself in, “Geez. doofus. You never-“ He froze when he didn’t see Mika in the bed. He proceeded to take a look around the room, “Mika?” He stepped further in and looked towards the master bathroom and saw Mika on the floor. “Mika?!” He quickly rushed over to her, “What the hell?” He hesitated for a bit trying to think of what to do.
Soon the rest of the incubi rushed in, Damien in front, “What happened?!” He panicked.
“I don’t know!” Sam exclaimed, “I walked in and she was on the floor.” Jame made his way towards Mika. Sam stepped back and let James examine her.
“Well she’s still breathing.” He said letting out a sigh of relief. He proceeded to gently shake her, “Miss? Miss wake up.” Mika slowly opened her eyes and winced at the pain in her head and the pain that’s now in her body from sleeping on the floor, “Miss, are you okay?”
“Why are you on the floor?” Erik asked her.
“She’s sweating a lot.” Matthew piped in. Mika began to shiver from the cold as she tried to speak.
“I- I-“ She retched and went on to vomit again. James quickly went to hold her hair out of her face.
“Holy shit.” Sam remarked.
James put a hand on her arm, “You’re extremely warm, Miss.”
“I t-think I have a fever.” Mika managed to get out.
“A fever?” Matthew asked, confused.
“We’ll look into it, Miss. For now, let’s get you off the bathroom floor.” James scooped Mika into his arms,
“Sam, can you go get a bag in case she has to vomit again?” Sam nodded and in a blink of an eye, he now held a garbage bag in his hands. James gently set Mika down into bed and she quickly pulled the blanket over her. “But Miss, you’re already very warm. Shouldn’t you try to cool down?”
“I’m cold.” Mika said, almost pulling the blanket over her head. James furrowed his eyebrows in confusion.
“Sam, Damien, can you two stay here with her? Erik and Matthew, can you two come with me to figure out what’s going on with her?” Everyone nodded at Jame’s command before doing what they needed to do.
James sat at the chair in the study as Erik and Matthew stood behind him. James typed fever into the google search bar. He clicked on the first website that popped up and read the symptoms list out loud.
“Well, that definitely seems like what she has.” Erik sighed.
“At least we know she’s not dying or anything.” Matthew chuckled nervously. James continued to look through multiple sources to confirm the information was resourceful.
“Alright, all these sources say that she needs rest, water, to stay cool, and something called ibuprofen. She as well needs to have something in her system when she takes it. We should try to get her to eat.”
“But I thought it said people with fevers won’t have an appetite?” Matthew questioned, “Human sickness is weird.”
Erik read the website on the screen, “It says here the best thing to eat is chicken soup. That will also keep her hydrated.”
“I can go make her the soup!” Matthew offered and quickly rushed off to the kitchen.
Sam continued to hold the bag for Mika whenever she dry heaved as Damien rubbed her back in gentle circles.
“So, what the hell is going on with her?” Sam asked worriedly to James and Erik as they walked back into the room.
“She’s contracted a human illness. A fever. She’ll be fine, apparently it’s quite common.”
“Princess,” Erik started, “Do you have this medicine called ibuprofen?”
“Yeah, it's in the medicine cabinet above my sink.” Mika pointed to the bathroom. Erik nodded and went to find the medicine as James went into her closet and fetched a lighter blanket, bringing it back into her room.
“Now Miss, I know you’re cold, but all the sources I discovered say you need to stay cool, as I suspected.” Mika groaned as James traded out the heavy blanket for the lighter one. Erik came out of the bathroom and set the ibuprofen down on the nightstand. Matthew came in with a bowl of soup and a bottle of water and set them down next to the ibuprofen.
“Mika, can I help you sit up? You need to eat.” Damien asked. Mika nodded and Damien gently helped her sit up and adjusted her pillows behind her.
“Here, I can feed it to you,” Matthew suggested.
“Do you wanna watch a movie or something?” Sam asked, wanting to be helpful.
“No thanks, my head still hurts.” Mika muttered.
“Well, is there anything else you need?” Damien asked.
“Yeah, anything you need, we’re on it!” Matthew chimed in. Mika couldn’t help but smile. She had obviously had fevers before and knew how to treat herself, but the fact that the incubi found out something was wrong and rushed to help her made her get a warm fuzzy feeling in her heart.
“Then can someone rub my feet?” She said, trying to joke. But Erik without a second thought went down to the foot of the bed and lifted the blanket off her feet.
“Whatever my princess desires.” He smirked playfully. Mika laughed. She got used to Erik’s playful flirting and it always managed to brighten her mood.
Matthew fed Mika the soup slowly while Erik rubbed her feet, Damien stayed close to her side and provided cuddles, James made sure the room stayed cool, and Sam sat close by trying to joke and keep her mood happier.
“Do you feel you’ve had enough soup to take the medicine?” Matthew asked, “I could always heat it back up for you if you want to eat it later.”
“Yeah, I’ll take the ibuprofen.” Mika took the recommended amount of medicine and drank small amounts of water.
“Alright, now you need more rest.” Damien readjusted the pillows and softly laid Mika back down. James went into the bathroom and came back with a cold wet rag. He laid it on Mika’s forehead.
Erik laid the blanket back over her feet and stood up, “Call us if you need anything, Princess.” Everyone got up and prepared to leave.
“Wait, guys,” Mika said, making them bring their full attention to her, “I just wanna say thank you. I already feel better thanks to you. I love you guys.” Each of their faces in unison went a slight pink. They all gave soft smiles while Sam looked away slightly.
“No problem, Miss. Now get some rest.” James said softly before they all left except for Sam who held back for a bit.
“Hey, uh. Sorry about what you’re going through. And um, sorry for not being very helpful.”
Mika smiled at him, “Sam, I can promise you that you being here with me made me feel a lot better. You’re awesome.” Sam’s blushed intensified as he grinned his toothy grin and chuckled a bit.
“Thanks. Feel better.” Sam then followed his brothers out the room. Mika got comfortable and relaxed. The smile stayed on her face as she drifted off to sleep.

Matthew Anderson x Reader *Healing Inner Child Comfort*
Warnings: Childhood trauma, however kept rather vague and generalized. Not beta read.
Summary: After having to take care and deal with so many traumatic things at a young age, it's made you feel like an adult, even when you weren't. Now that you are an adult, looking back and realizing you couldn't just be a kid and have a normal childhood really upsets you. Matthew comforts the character and shows them that while it might not be the same, it's still possible to just act like a kid and heal your inner child.
Word Count: 2,620
A/N: Reader isn't exactly Mika, and I spaced out the time from the first game between Malix and Diana it took a little over a month, because having the events happening within a week is wild to me.
Can you tell I'm a bit biased based on the word count? Also, I was just rereading my other drabble I wrote for him and didn't realize how similar these are (in which tag is involved). So maybe one day I might come back to this and do it a bit differently, but who knows. Expect the next prompt with Matthew to either be really short or really long, because again, it is kind of based off of my own experiences. So I might get way into it, or keep it short to avoid myself from getting triggered. I guess we'll see!
Story under the cut to save space/scroll time!
Things had already started settling into a new normal in the mansion that your grandfather left you in his will. While things were a bit chaotic at first, finding bloodied incubi men on the floor wasn't ideal, nor did it make sense to you at first. But now? You can't imagine anything different, the five brothers really opened up your eyes to a whole new world besides the one you were used to. They had made you breakfast this morning, like they typically did to show you gratitude for letting them stay there after the events with both Malix and Diana.
However, as everyone was starting to clean up Sam and Matthew had seemed to start bickering with each other, over what exactly? You didn't exactly catch it, but it did lead to Matthew starting an unspoken game of tag between him and his brothers. While James seemed to stay out of it, but had a small smile on his features showing his true feelings. Eric and Damien had joined in, laughing for a moment before James seemed to put an end to it so that they could all finish cleaning up.
As you watched, for some reason it made you feel a bit envious. At first, you didn't quite understand why you felt that way. The more you thought about it, the more you realized that you couldn't remember the last time you had played tag. You were sure you had played tag at some point, but as you tried to recall the memory, only the memories of your childhood that you could remember were of things you wished you could forget.
This only lead you to think about it more, surely there had to have been a happy childhood memory in there somewhere. You had some friends in your elementary school days, and you remember being outside at recess. But what did you do during recess? You remember being on the swings quite often, and watching the other kids around you playing, and you remember being on the monkey bars, but those were all things that you remembered doing alone. The envy within you started to turn into bitter sadness, you remembered how hard it was to get birthday party invites, and if it was a sleepover, you usually couldn't go, or stay for the whole night.
The traumas you experienced as a kids started to bubble up more and more as you thought about it, and you could remember having to hold yourself differently. You always had to take care of someone, or fix something that shouldn't have been your problem at such a young age. You started to realize just how fast you had to grow up, how you started to see the world different even as a child, and how you had to learn how to survive at such a young age. That eventually, it seemed like birthday parties and whether or not you were invited to play soccer with the other kids all became secondary to your other list of priorities. Getting good grades in school, doing your chores at home, making sure to watch your tone around your parents, and how to determine what set of footsteps approached your bedroom door became the new set of priorities for you.
"Mx? Are you okay?" James seemed to question, snapping you back into your reality.
You didn't even know that you had started crying, suddenly feeling so angry that you started shaking. Now that you were an adult and away from your parents, your childhood home, your past, it finally hit you all at once just how much you missed out on. You couldn't even seem to answer James, simply shaking your head, before suddenly taking your leave to get some fresh air before it somehow got worse. You weren't mad at the boys for playing around, you were mad at the fact that you didn't seem to know how to ask to join in, how to be child again, instead of the paranoid adult you grew up to be. You were mad that you missed out on a whole childhood that you couldn't get back, and now it's too late to do anything about it.
It felt like grief to you, similar to the grief you felt when your grandfather passed. But this time, it felt as if you grieving over a potential life you could have had. Grieving the child version of yourself that deserved better, and never was able to get it by the time that childhood was over.
It was Matthew who came out first to try and comfort you, they all seemed to want to, but you had grown close to Matthew in a way you didn't quite realize until that moment. You enjoyed his company because of how "childish" he seemed to be, despite being able to hold his own fair share of responsibility and wisdom. You wished you could be more like him in that way, being able to just let go and have fun, instead of holding yourself back all because of how you were raised. Maybe Damien told them what you had been thinking about at the time, and they decided that maybe it was best for Matthew to be the one to come out to you. Or maybe he just wanted to make sure you were alright on his own accord.
"Hey, (Y/N)." Matthew greeted at first, "Do you mind if I stay out here with you?"
You simply shrugged at first, unsure of how to feel. You knew there would have to be a conversation about how you were feeling at some point. Being vulnerable was always a bit tough for you, having to always keep it together for the sake of your family.
"Take your time, you don't have to talk about it if you don't want to." Matthew added, not trying to pressure you into a conversation you were ready to have yet.
"It's hard to explain." You simply shook your head at first, not knowing where to begin, and not exactly wanting to spill your whole life story to him in order to explain.
"Then don't explain, not yet any way… Do you want to play tag with me?" Matthew suddenly questioned, catching you a bit off guard.
"What?" You asked, but it was pointless to ask, as Matthew suddenly approached you and touched you, yelling "Tag! You're it!" before running away from you.
It took you a moment to process what had happened, before you started to walk towards him at first. He smiled, walking backwards away from you, waiting to see if you would suddenly stop, or decide to chase after him. After a moment, you picked up your pace, feeling unsure about what was happening but still trying to go after him anyway. Soon, Matthew took off running again, and you couldn't help but feel the need to stop. It felt a bit silly to you to be playing a game of tag. A couple of minutes had passed, before you felt a voice suddenly come from behind you.
"Are you going to tag me?" Matthew questioned, as you quickly turned around, a bit surprised, and yet, still reaching out for him to attempt to tag him anyway.
He laughed, dodging out of the way, before you squinted your eyes at him dodging out of the way and attempting to tag him again. He was so close to you, how could you not tag him? Yes, it felt silly, but if he was going to tease you about it, at least you could make an attempt to try. It seemed like mere inches were keeping the two of you separated, before you finally decided to chase after him and finally tagging him.
"Tag! Finally!" You shouted, sounding a bit exasperated, making Matthew laugh at your reaction.
However, it took half a second for him to tag you again, as you forgot that it was now your turn to run.
"Tag! New rule, no tag backs." Matthew smirked.
"What? That's not fair, you just tagged me back!" You defended, tagging him back.
"Fine, I'll give you one freebie, but now there's no tag backs!" Matthew stated, as he seemed to run back inside the house.
Within a second you saw Eric coming outside chasing Matthew, who only stopped when he saw you and started to run towards you. You assumed it was out of pure instinct more than a cooperation to playing that you ran away from him. Eric did seem a lot more threatening when he was suddenly chasing after you suddenly, when you had just been standing mindlessly a second ago. It took a second, before Eric tagged you, you thought maybe it was unfair, unsure if it was simply his long legs giving him the advantage, or the fact that they were a completely different species with different advantages than you. As soon as you were tagged, you looked around, Matthew couldn't have possibly known that you were it now, right? Would he even trust you if you approached him anyway? Then you smirked, heading inside calmly. You tried to clear your mind of your little plan, just in case Damien wanted to rat you out, as you found Sam first. Sam didn't think much of anything, before you tagged him, as you announced the "No tag backs!" rule quickly, which gave you a head start.
"Aw, what!?" Sam groaned, before he ran towards Damien, who did happen to hear his thoughts and already had a head start before Sam could even process where his brother could be.
This game of tag seemed to last for at least thirty minutes, but it felt more like two hours. You were out of breath, and at times you had even given up on running all together, opting for a casual stroll instead and accepting your fate. At some point you had to call "times" to get a drink of water, and encouraged the others to get their water break too, and that they'd all have at least ten seconds to run before the game started up again.
As much as James had tried to avoid the inevitable, even telling his brothers that he wasn't interested in playing, when it came to you, he eventually gave in and finally let you tag him. You felt even more excited, running outside and yelling to everyone else that James was it. This only seemed to make the brothers up the stakes when it came to each other, but always made sure to at least slow themselves down when it came to you.
When your feet finally started to hurt, you collapsed onto the soft grass with a laugh. You couldn't help but start crying again in the midst of your laughter, suddenly overcome with a sense of nostalgia and happiness. Matthew collapsed next to you not too long after.
"I'm not it, I swear! We should team up and go hide from them and see how long it takes for them to notice and find us." Matthew suggested, as you simply nodded at first, wiping your tears away for a moment.
You followed him, telling him how you had found out that the mansion had a small secret side room in the library. Immediately the two of you snuck around to try and make it to the library without getting noticed by the others. Matthew was your lookout when you entered the library and opened up the secret room, motioning for him to follow in quickly. An automatic light seemed to flick on in the room, as you had closed the door behind the two of you. It was nice to get a bit of a breather from running, you never had really thought about hiding during a game of tag before.
"Thank you." You simply told him at first, as it was just the first thing on your side.
"Yeah, I just wanted you to feel included." He simply replied, and you couldn't help but think that he wasn't completely being truthful about his intentions about his game of tag.
"I didn't really get this a lot growing up." You started, hoping to ease into why you had been upset earlier.
"We didn't either…" Matthew sympathized, and you couldn't help but forget that they didn't have the best life back in the Abyssal Plains.
"Do you ever get angry that you didn't get a childhood?"
"Things are a bit different in the Abyssal Plains… Growing up, we didn't really think about it much. We did get to play with each other sometimes, but I imagine it wasn't like how you guys played as children here."
"That makes sense… When I saw you guys playing tag earlier, I just couldn't help but wonder when the last time I had played tag was, and my memories just continued to disappoint me." You confessed, "I didn't realize just how fast I had to grow up as a child…"
"I'm sorry to hear that… I really am."
You simply nodded as a response at first, "I just can't help but grieve a childhood I never had, I'm sure I'll get over it eventually…" you shrugged.
"You might have missed out of your childhood, but that doesn't mean you can't make your adulthood something your child self could be proud of and have fun with." Matthew stated, as he was fidgeting with some of the random dusty stuff in the room.
"Where would I even start?" You couldn't help but ask, it was supposed to be rhetorical, but he turned and smiled at you anyway.
"Well, I think you already started."
You smiled, feeling a sense of comfort at his words. You did feel that earlier, that happiness and nostalgia. Maybe it wasn't impossible to get those feelings back, to feel comfortable about feeling like a little kid, and making the child version of you proud. There was a moment of comfortable silence while you processed his words.
"Hey, isn't this the book that James was reading yesterday?" Matthew asked, lifting up the book, as you walked over and gently examined the book with him.
It was in fact, not dusty at all, at least compared to the other things in the room. It was just then that they had noticed that one of the leather chairs in the room seemed to not have a spec of dust on it either. Just as they had noticed it, the two of you looked at each other.
"We should leave, just in case." You mentioned "nonchalantly" as you pointed towards the door.
"Yeah, that sounds like a good idea." He agreed, and just as the two of you had began to leave the secret room, James had come into the room.
The two of you froze, "Are you it, James?" Matthew couldn't help but ask him.
"Well, I suppose there's only one way to find out." James seemed to smirk, teasing them both.
"You wouldn't play tag in the library, would you? There's quite a lot of important things in here…" You added, trying to reason with him as you inched closer to the door that lead out to the hallway.
"I wouldn't, you are right about that." James nodded, making you let out a breath.
Before you could process it, Matthew had already taken off running. But just as he had left out to the hallway, Eric had been waiting for him and tagged him making Matthew let out a groan of frustration. This made you, and the two eldest brothers laugh. Just as Matthew had started to come back, you were quick to come up with a new rule.
"The library is off limits!"

drawfee prompts #6 :)
It had been weeks since Danny Al Gul Joined an all-girls school. Ricky told her that they were tracking down a target at the school a potential assassin that escaped and was hiding out among the students and that she had to go undercover to find this assassin. But the reality was that it was the only way to get her into a school. There was no assassin, no mission, and Danny was starting to suspect this was a trap.
“We need to do something, I think she knows” – Nightwing Told Redhood
“why do you even want her to go to school?” – replied Todd more annoyed than amused at this tip toing around, she had suggested the idea as a joke but as usual ricky has  a stick up her ass
“dafuk is that suppose to mean” – grayson was annoyed –
“did I say that outloud? , I thought I was only thinking” - Todd clearly knew
“Fk you, we need to do something or she’s gonna leave school and then all the progress we’ve made is gonna be lost”
“Progress?”  - asked redhood
“yes progress, she’s got friends now, and its socializing, she needs to make friends who aren’t also assassins or meta humans” – Ricky was happy to think of Danny having friends and studying in the library
“or a demon child with daddy issues” – Todd wasn’t a fan of Raven and was happy to keep Dammy as far away from crazy demon girls, witch boys and all that nonsense. With a look of resolution  was obvious , they will do what they must to keep Damine this year in school.
The next day a very obvious non disguised Dicky Grayson joined the school and introduced herself in homeroom class as Mika Anges von Rochester the III. “but you may call me III” – explained Dicky – “for shorts”
Danny had a look that seemed to scream “earth swallow me whole”
“Dafuc you’re doing here” – Danny was clearly annoyed
“I have news about your assassin” -  Nightwing whispered – “I have intel from the justice league, the enemy we are searching for indeed goes to this school, he, or she, or them, goes by the code name RED X”
Danny read the file carefully after class, Red X had been targeting random rich students in class, torturing them and forcing them to send small sums of cash, normal bully behavior except this was a rich prep school, Red X could easily steal 10K + with each attack and get away with it, 10K here, 20K here, it ads up and was targeting specially rich students in class. Grayson disguising as a Dutchess from a rich family was a ploy to lure out the mysterious RedX.
Nightwing spent the rest of the day talking about his amazing wealth and pretty much embarrassing Damien with all her friends. She was clearly having fun.
“OMG Damine have you learned NOTHING? A2 + B2 = C2  so to solve this equation…” Dicky Grayson was annoyed at the fact that Damine still had difficulty with basic math, and reading, and writing, and history and literally anything”
I don’t have time for this bullshit, I have learned nothing and will continue to learn nothing” replied Dammy annoyed, “Im only here to catch this assassin that I already know its Redhood btw, do you think I haven’t read Redhood’s aliases, how stupid do you think I am, I suspected this was all a farce  but this confirms…..”
A smack to the head quieted the rant and turned into a tantrum. Clearly Danny did not appreciate the trick and was more annoyed than anything. But she understood what they were trying to do and decided to try 1% more.

Shrunken Head Rambles 2
I love stories were I watch the boys struggle before they get there happy end. Since the boys kinda felt limited to backgrounds in Seduce Me The Otome. I love how the Seduce Me Community has gone and developed some of them. Damien has a canon painful background that makes me pity him. Meanwhile, Erik's story was more implied and people in the community have seen that and brought it forward. Some have probably stretched but still it was stories like those that made me even play Erik's route in the first place. Yo legit had my game sitting there refusing to playhis route until I read an Archive Of Our Own story from ElymmerKat (I am spelling it wrong forgive me)
However, I haven't found solo Matthew content that I was satisfied with reading. Like I liked the stories but they don't leave me wanting more. Matthew has the type of, background where he was probably bullied and snapped, but he often hides his outrage. Ugh I just mm I will nit pick thisss man. I wanna write for him, but I am so lazy! I have it written but typing it out on PC is disheartening idk whhhyyy… (cry)
I love Sam x Mika content because well it is canon. Aside from that Sam is just there. Fills a fantasy and I guess Mika treats him differently or something. Sam is simply a prideful and protective being.

Prologue: Up Where They Talk
Blood. A constant horrific everyday element in a sea of death and misery, it was called the Decaying Sea for a reason after all. The smell drenched the atmosphere in an everlasting metallic odor. The taste of the liquid of life seasoned with the salt of the ocean depths was always on the back of one's tongue. It never dissipated. The entire underwater kingdom was tinted in a rusty red color from which no forsaken water breathing inhabitant could escape from. One certain siren in particular had the worst of it : the bastard son of the Sealord, whose existence was constantly on the brink of being extinguished. He was born with an ability his father, mother and himself saw only as a curse: the ability to read minds. The poor merman was constantly bombarded by the cruel and clamoring thoughts of every fish and foe that was even remotely nearby. His only bit of warmth and kindness came from his half-brothers who protected and loved him unconditionally. They were the only single specks of light in his unending darkness that kept him going. However, his brothers could not be there for him today.
His eldest Brother Raestrao, who gave him the fatherly affection that was denied to him from birth had so many responsibilities as the heir and favored son. His duties had drawn him away as they often did. His second elder brother, Uzaeris, was a charming siren who perfectly fulfilled his duties as a sea dwelling seducer. He was being strictly tutored by his mother in the- art of enthrallment under her watchful eye. The third brother, Aomaris, was a rebel who did as he pleased. He would stir up trouble to ease the mundane tedium that filled his days. Without the other brothers, he would likely not think to keep him company, unless he was in danger or being antagonized by the servants of the undersea castle, which was often the case. He seemed to be safe for now, if not lonely. And finally his fourth brother, Zecaeru, despite being only slightly older, had the fun energy of a guppy and often played with him, when he was not comforting his mother. His Mother wallowed in sorrowful envy for her husband’s three over wives. Her son did his best to distract her with his ability to create. So the bastard son, Izroul, was alone to fend for himself in the darkness and solitude of the throne room. He had no mother to teach him or to comfort, not anymore. The very thought of her and her death was enough to make his heart wrench in pain. And so he sat at the foot of his ruthless tyrant father’s throne and wept at his own bitter loneliness, curling his arms around his ebony Tail. his only solace was there was no one around whose thoughts could invade his mind…or so he thought.
“Why are you crying?” A voice in his mind had asked abruptly . The voice was unfamiliar and strange. Unlike the siren voices that had an ethereal enchanting underlying quality or the other sea dwellers whose voices had a dark echo, this voice had none of that. It Sounded kind and elderly. He spoke directly to him through his thoughts. The fact he was using his speech through his thoughts on purpose frightened him.
“W-who are you?? What do you want?” The youngest siren son called out as his voice reverberated against the large tone walls. his defensive instinct was on high alert, assuming this voice had to be nearby. This kind gentle tone could only be a trick to get him to lower his guard.
“I just want to know if you are ok.” Such an excuse seemed almost impossible, no one other than his brothers would ever care about him in any way. The voice still did not answer the other part of his question, he would not let himself be taken advantage of and decieved by a stranger. But, at the same time, his curiosity peaked as he could not sense anyone nearby.
“Don’t be afraid, I'm just a friend.” Izroul had learned throughout the years to know when someone’s mind was being honest, even if their words were not. In this case the words from this odd man were true. He really meant no harm to him at all; he was sincere. “A….friend?” It made no sense, why would someone want to be his friend? This voice could not possibly be from a demon. but if not, then what?
The voice merely laughed, as if it was the one reading his mind. “That’s right, even if I wanted to harm you, which I would never do, I could not. I am not from your world, but I heard and felt your powerful sorrow even from the surface of the human world sea
The siren’s eyes widened, Raestrao had once told him of humans. They were beings from another world, a world ruled by peace instead of fear and brutality. Like the abyssal plains, the human world had a sea as well, vast and nearly endless. The humans however, lived primarily on the land in safety. He had always wanted to know more but could never find the time for Raestrao to explain. Perhaps this voice could! Despite his hesitation, he wanted to know. He wanted to trust the voice, he wanted to learn.
“The human world...are...are you a human? You don’t sound like a sea dweller...but if you are, I don’t understand...how can you be speaking with me now from another world?” He asked as innocently as a child who found out there were things far beyond what he knew. He had to know!
“I am, however I’m a bit different then most humans. I have been allowed to study magic which can allow me to speak to you as I am now. Am I the first human you have ever talked to?” The voice spoke gently and calmly, as though trying to ease his nerves and fear, taking things slowly. it reminded him of his brothers, no one else had ever spoken to him so kindly.
“Yes...although I know very little of them...but I know they are different then us.Can...you tell me about them?” He could hardly believe he had the courage to ask this he had only just met this human and knew nothing about him and yet he was already asking to know more, he felt a strong yearning in his heart steadily growing, if humans were as caring and benevolent to a siren and stranger like him, he wanted to know all about them.
“Of course I can young man, I can tell you everything you could ever want to know.”
hearing these words made the siren's face form into a smile, his eyes were wide and eager. Ready to learn about these strange creatures known as “humans”
Chapter 1: Where the People Are
It was a gorgeous day in the human world. Clouds as white as snow floated through the sky lazily as the warm sun beamed down upon the waves of the calm seas. There was a large piece of land in the midst of the sea; filled with bustling crowds of people. They were shopping in marketplaces, or resting in their homes. Nobles and peasants, sailors and shopkeepers and everyone in between was enjoying the pleasant morning far and wide. But no one was quite as interesting and excited as a young woman named Mika Anderson.
Mika was a member of a wealthy merchant family., An heiress to an empire started by her grandfather: Anderson Toys. They created toys for children everywhere, even across the sea and around the world. The Anderson name was respected and recognized by anyone who heard it. Harold Anderson was said to have been a genius in make believe and an Artisan of childhood dreams. His company was not just a business but a passion, for he truly loved the joy his trade brought to the children who received their toys. He only had one child, a son, David Anderson, who worked with the family business. His son did not share the same passion for the toys and children as he was, he dedicated himself to the business side of the company. The two were said to be estranged from some unknown event, long in the past that no one knew of but them. The father and son still worked together to build up their empire of toys, but each in their own ways. They avoided one another and traveled different directions on the same path.
Mika, unlike her father, was very close to her grandfather. She preferred his kind, gentle and nurturing nature compared to her strict, overbearing and cold father, who only wished for her to marry a wealthy man who could help with the business. Mika had no interest in searching for someone to be with only to please her father. She had been well educated and was quite intelligent. Her father acknowledged her talents, but did not find it right for a young upper class lady to work. He feared she would not be taken seriously outside of a feminine field. As a young girl however, she did help her grandfather create some of his best toys . He often asked for her opinion and used her childish perspective to improve and create even better playthings.
The father and daughter had been invited to Harold Anderson’s newest ship. But when they had arrived at the dock they were told to go to, they only saw one boat, and it was not at all what they had expected. It was surprisingly small. It looked as though it was made for a crew of only about 10 at the most. A ship much better suited for short personal journeys rather than ferrying cargo for months on end. There were only one or two cabins to the right, and stairs leading down below. It was modest and quaint with only two lage sails. The woodwork was clean and polished, Painstakingly hand carved in Harold Anderson’s signature style. It was just like when he made his wooden toys himself when he first started out. It was painted in bright fresh colors and the coat looked painted and dried to perfection. It was almost like a toy boat that had become life sized.
Mika couldn’t help but grin ear to ear with delight as her grandfather helped her on board. Her father, following close behind, could only sneer in obvious disappointment. It was clearly not at all what he was expecting. “What in the seven seas is this father?! Is this some sort of joke? You said you wanted to show us the Anderson Toy company's newest vessel, the pride of our fleet! A ship of the highest quality and condition! You can’t really have brought us all the way out here for this little dinghy!” He crossed his arms, unhappy at his fathers deceptive exaggeration. “This is so like you…talking up the most meager and frivolous things as if they were made of pure gold. Typical.”
He turned his back to the old man in disdain and irritation. The elderly patriarch's face fell at his son's harsh words, disappointed he could not see the value of the ship the three of them stood on, but also had a look of resigned understanding, as though this reaction was not unexpected. Mika glared at her fathers back, he had always been so cynical and severe, especially her grandfather. She had no idea what caused their falling out, as no one would tell her, but she hated the way he treated him. Mika turned to her grandfather and gave a big reassuring and encouraging smile. “Well, I think it’s wonderful grandfather! It looks just like one of your toys brought to life. It’s perfect for you.” She put her arm through his affectionately and patted his arm, which lightened the mood considerably. She could still hear a loathsome scoff from her father at her adulation for him. “Thank you sweetie! I worked very hard on this and carved this boat by hand. It's been quite a project for me but well worth it in the end. One of my greatest creations so far and I am so proud of it.” He put an appreciative hand over mikas and turned to face his sons back once more with a sigh. “This is only my own personal sailing vessel, I had already commissioned the company ship ages ago and it’s docked in the shipping port now.” At this new tidbit of information, David Anderson’s head turned back ever so slightly to glance at the two. “ The Good Ship Anderson, it is five times bigger than my little “dinghy” and can hold as much cargo as two of our regular vessels could together. It comes with all the bells and whistles. A full crew of 40 strong and ready able-bodied men. It can even cut the travel time by three days. Will that satisfy you son?”
Harold Anderson gave a tired sigh, knowing only the impressive assets exclusively for their business would appease his single-minded goal focused son. David turned to face his family again with a curt nod and raised a finger to his temple in frustration. “Of course it does father! Why wouldn't you tell me this first instead of leading me on with this tiny thing??” There was relief in his voice at this new business prospects the other ship entailed, but found the run around of the conversation aggravating to say the least. “Because, I have something important to tell you. I will be taking this boat on a personal trip unrelated to business and I may not be back for a long while, perhaps not for months, I needed to inform you both. I will be leaving tomorrow and wanted to see you both before I departed.”
The son and granddaughter stared in shock. He had always been so dedicated to the company and any trips he took were solely for business or the occasional fishing trip, but those never lasted longer than a week. Mika knew he was once a great explorer, and traveled all over the world when the company was just starting out, He had just begun some dedicated customers that soon soared the Anderson Toy company to a household name. That’s when he decided to settle down and focus on his toy making full-time. Perhaps part of him yearned for that feeling once again. Mr. Anderson began to shake in anger at his fathers statement “are you insane!? You just bought a ship to improve trading and now you decide to just up and leave to god knows where on such short notice? How entirely selfish can you be?! What on earth is so important that you would abandon us at this intrigral point in our business dealings!?”
Mika instinctively took a step between her grandfather and father defensively. “Father stop! He must have his reasons! He has been working tirelessly for the past year, and he wouldn't leave us if it wasn't important. Even if it was for just a break, he deserves it! At least let him explain himself.” Her fathers angry stare immediately turned onto his daughter with a grimace of resentment. “Of course you would defend him! fine then! father, explain, but this had better be a very important trip.” The elderly man did not falter at his son's tirade, only looked upon him with pity and sadness before clearing his throat. “It is, I assure you. It is to help a young acquaintance of mine in a bad situation, and perhaps, find a way to get him and his family out of it. The company will be fine, as I am putting you in charge in my absence. I won't be gone for long, a few months at most. And I will resume my duties upon my return.” Although it was clear that Harold’s reasoning was not nearly enough for David, the businessman's eyes winded with a startled glint at the bestowment of the company on to him, even if temporarily. He soothed his anger begrudgingly and straightened up, resuming his composure. “Fine then, as long as our enterprise does not have to suffer or fall into the wrong hands in your absence because of some charity case, do what you like, old man. But I hope this ‘acquaintance' is worth it.” Harold Anderson only nodded in reply.
He turned to Mika who was still processing this. She envied her grandfather's freedom to go wherever he liked and to pursue whatever interested him, she wished she had that kind of liberty as well. However, Her father would never allow that. “I wish I could go with you grandfather. I would have loved to see the sights with you and discover new places. I haven't even ever been on a boat that was not securely anchored and docked in the port.” she looked down dreamily at the ship she was on, feeling it gently rock with the rhythm of the waves. She ran her fingers along the polished wood frame longingly.
“And you never will, not if I have anything to say about it.” her father interrupted her daydreaming and sternly crossed his arms again. “The sea is no place for a woman. You could be shipwrecked, get lost at sea, ambushed by thieves and pirates, fall overboard or any other number of things. You should be focused on finding a nice young man to help with the company. Settle down and get married. You are 18 now. It is the perfect time to present you. You are far better educated and intelligent then most of the airheaded young women your age around here and you come from a good respectable family. anyone who would not be interested in you would be a fool.” Mika frowned, Yet again he somehow managed to find a way to worm this topic into the conversation. She did not want to simply be some trophy wife or bait for her father to find a male heir. Mika was an only child and her parents could no longer have children so all their aspirations fell upon her to fulfill. Still though, she kept silent, knowing he would never change his mind, no matter how capable they both knew she was.
Her grandfather put a hand on the girl's shoulder and smiled, attempting to sooth her frustration. “I can agree with my son on one thing, whoever you decide to be with, if anyone would be the luckiest man in the world, you are so strong, smart and a lovely young woman, even a siren couldn't resist your charms.” Mika smiled and relaxed at her grandfather's touch and held her hand over his, but what he said had piqued her interest. “Siren? As in merfolk?'' She had grown up hearing sailors tell stories of the mythical creatures who are said to live beneath the sea. Beings whose lower half were not legs, but a tail like a fish. They could breathe underwater and lived deep beneath the waves. Some sailors even claimed in their stories that many men's lives have been spared and saved in shipwrecks. But some told a very different, morbid version of the tale, Men lost to sea from being seduced by their nautical charm. lured into a trance by an enchanting voice, only to be pulled below the water and drowned. But they did not exist. It was only an old wives tale. Her father had always claimed they were merely seals or manatees upon rocks. mistaken for merfolk by the bleary eyes of drunken sailors in storms. The so called enchanting melodies were nothing more than whale calls. As a child she was told not to believe such blather, but she remembered grandfather telling her about how he believed they were real. He told her that although some could cause great harm, others were kind and helpful. “Oh yes, I remember the stories you told me as a little girl.” Her grandfather gave her a nod and chuckled
“They are very misunderstood creatures. The ability to charm anyone with a voice that could make the heavens cry and play your heart strings like a violin. They can easily steal away the love of any young men..or maiden. but I believe there is far more to them than that. I even named my ship after them. You two are standing aboard ‘The Siren’s Song’.” She smiled at him indulgently. He was so imaginative and creative he always loved stories of magic and romance. Her father did not seem so amused. He only got agitated. “Bah! They do not exist! They are only the imaginings of reprobates and scallywags at sea who would rather believe fairy tales than pull themselves together and focus on what's right in front of them. My daughter will not be so easily taken in by your fantasies as she was when she was a child. She is a woman now and she will be married to a real living human man. Not some half fish freak of fiction. Do not distract her with such rubbish and romanticized flights of fancy.”
Mika’s father pulled her away from her grandfather roughly by the arm. “Come Mika, we should be going now. If he is leaving tomorrow, we will need to prepare and inspect the actual company ship. You should go home, I don't want you this close to the water.” As the angry parent tried to pull and tug his daughter off the small colorful boat, She found herself not wanting to leave. She gripped the railing of her grandfather's ship, a small burst of defiant courage burning in her chest. “What if I don’t want to get married!? What if I wanted to explore other options? Or maybe even take over the company myself someday without a partner.” Her fathers eyes narrowed as her grandfather’s widened in surprised delight at her standing up for herself, and her interest in the company. Her father stood over her trying to assert himself. David Anderson severed back around to face Mka and her sudden act of obstinance. “ You know as well as I you would never be taken seriously as a head of a major business like this! you are just a child, and female at that. Women can make fine entrepreneurs, I'll grant you that but only in certain circumstances. teachers, house staff, governesses, occasionally tutors, cooking and mending…but I don't want that kind of life for you even if you could, not my daughter. I don't want to risk you being on your own with no one to look after you if you cant succeed and end up barely scraping by. You need someone who will take care of you and provide so you don't have to. If you did take over, and people found out, nobody would respect you as a leader. You are better off finding a good husband who can do all that for you when I no longer can.”
Mika felt a fire in her stomach filled with rage and anger at his condescension and dismissal, all her life she had been treated like a burden and disappointment. Even when she was given the finest tutors and teachers. What good was all that learning if she could never put it to good use. She wasn't just an investment! She was her own person. Before she could stop herself, she felt herself erupting at her father before her mind could catch up with her mouth to stop. “It sounds like you think I will fail regardless! I don't want to be just a decoration on a man's arm as he lives my life instead of me! I want to do things and go places! I don't know what or where but I want the chance to figure it out for myself and prove I am worthy and able to achieve things on my own without someone doing it for me or sheltering me!” Both of her male relatives stared in absolute awe at her words. Once the adrenaline of her outburst subsided she was flooded by the impact of my words. there was no going back now. David Anderson gripped his hands fists. he was not one to concede when called out, and this was one of the very first times she had ever done so herself. “I WONT HAVE YOU EMBARRASS THE ANDERSON NAME AND ALL I HAVE WORKED FOR BECAUSE YOU DO NOT KNOW WHEN TO ACCEPT YOUR PLACE! YOU KNOW NOTHING OF HOW THE WORLD TRULY WORKS AND CLING TO THESE UNREALISTIC DELUSIONS! SOMETIMES YOU MAKE ME SO DISAPPOINTED TO EVEN CALL YOU MY DAUGHTER!!” silence…suddenly everything was silent as his voice practically froze the air around them. His eyes locked onto her, realizing the gravity of what he had just said, and released his grip on her arm. He was unable to say another word. Mika’s eyes filled with tears and wrenched her arm away from him and ran to her grandfather. Shenuzzled her head in her grandfather's shoulder for comfort, as he looked silently away from his son in shame. David opened his mouth, as though wanting to say something but stopped himself. He rolled his shoulders and cleared his throat. “I will be going now to see this new company ship, The Anderson. Stay here if you like but be home by dinner. She did not answer or look at him as her grandfather patted her back comfortingly. His glance moved to his father with an envious glare but said nothing and walked off the ship and to the main port.
“Don't cry my dear, he did not mean that. He just worries for you and your future. He wants what's best for you.'' She pulled away from her grandfather's consoling embrace and wiped her eyes. “I don't think so, I think he just wants me to be something I'm not. I can never measure up to his expectations or be good enough for him…I’m going to miss you so much.” she watched him as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a handkerchief which he used to dry her eyes, which she appreciated. He gave her a warm smile and patted her head, making her feel like she was a little girl again, only this time he had to reach up a bit higher to get to the top of her head. “There now, no more tears. I have a surprise to show you! My latest toy, I know you'll love it.” Mika was intrigued, she had always been the very first one to see his new toys before anyone, so he could help her improve them. She was also the first to get the final product before they even hit the shelves. She nodded, giving a silent go ahead for him to show her. Harold grinned and rolled up his sleeves. He placed the handkerchief on his empty outstretched hand and waved his fingers over it as if performing a magic spell. He had picked up many little magic tricks to reveal his toys to children at events, but they always felt extra special with her. There was always an odd magical feeling that buzzed in the air that made something in her chest tingle. He then removed the handkerchief and revealed a doll, a doll that looked just like her! Round shiny green buttons made its eyes and long black yarn to resemble her hair. It wore a blue dress with a vest draped over its shoulders, and at the collar, a little blue ribbon was tied in a perfect small bow around its neck. Mika looked down in awe and tenderly took hold of it in her hands. It was expertly crafted down to the last detail.
“This is amazing!” Harold smiled, relieved that she approved. “I want to sell them, you have always been my biggest inspiration after all. However I need your approval before I do so. This is only my first prototype and I already have the pattern for production. But, I also respect your autonomy. If you don't want a doll that resembles you being sold, I won't. Either way you can keep this little doppelgänger for yourself. Do you want it?” Mika ran a hand over the hair of yarn and hugged it close before handing it back. “I would love for you to make more and give them to kids who will treasure them. However I think she should stay with you. Even if I can not go on the trip with you, at least this little me can explore the seas with you and keep you company! By the way, who is this acquaintance of yours? Is it someone I know?” Mika knew most of her grandfather's employees and her fathers close colleges in passing, but Harold only used the word “friend” and “acquaintance” to describe something more personal. Alas, he shook his head “No, you would never have met him. He lives far far away from here, almost another world away. I believe he is relatively about your age. From what he has told me he has lived a very tragic and painful life of abuse, he has never even been allowed a toy in his whole life, can you believe that?”
Mika gasped. She knew she was born into a privileged life but the thought of a child without a toy, was like a child without a childhood. That poor man, whoever he was, must be really going out of his way to help him, then again, that's just how he was. It made her so proud of him. That kind generosity was infectious. Mika looked at the little doll in her hands, an idea forming. “Give him the doll. It can be one of his first, and keep him company. No one should have to feel alone.” her grandfather looked at her surprised. “Are you sure?” As Mika nodded, his face melted into one of pride as he put the doll away. “very well then. I know he will love it. Someday perhaps you two could meet. I think you would get along quite well.” Mika couldn't help but laugh, even her grandfather was trying to set her up now. One thing was for certain, she trusted his tastes more than her fathers for someone compatible. If she was going to marry, it would be someone kind, sensitive, creative and romantic. Not one of the boring business men her father would choose for her.
“I really should be heading home now… I hope you have a nice time out there, and don't forget to come back alright?” She wrapped her arms around him in a hug as they both laughed “I won't dear, I promise...I love you.” As the two pulled away Mika smiled down at him, hearing the words her own father couldn't even say filled her with joy. “I love you too.” Mika disembarked The Siren’s Song and waved her grandfather off as he went back into the small ship's navigation room to plan his course. As she walked home she thought of all the kinds of adventures he would have and how much her heart yearned to go out into the world herself one day.
Harold Anderson had put down a very archaic map on his desk. As he stretched it open all the way out, he spoke in an ancient tongue of latin, waving his hand over the map. As he spoke the map revealed a second layer underneath. An ocean nearly identical to the one of his world, but much darker and deadlier, the decaying sea. his previous course he had traveled was marked. He had discovered a weak spot that had been close enough to a natural well of magic to connect to the decaying sea by his new siren friend by chance. However, he needed to be closer to the source. From what this boy said he was in constant pain and danger, he could not ignore his plight and wanted to do all he could to ease his suffering. He had such a curious mind and longed to know of the human world, and Harold was more than happy to oblige. According to his research, only one place in the entire ocean had enough legends, and magical aura around it that could be what he was looking for. A landmark not far from the spot he sensed it. He circled the point on the map and set his course to Open Wound Rock, the veil between the human ocean and decaying sea. That was where he would go.
Chapter 2: Treasures Untold
A siren with a tail of scales that shimmered in a deep shade of gold swam through the empty halls of the sea lord's undersea castle. He had just gotten out of yet another study session, one of many throughout the day. However, he had worked more diligently than usual to complete his duties, to finally have the freedom that gave him the only happiness he had ever known while being over encumbered with his responsibility. He wanted to be with his brothers. It had been weeks since they had all been together. Finally he had made it to their usual meeting spot, but only found his brother Aomaris. His younger brother was lazily stretched out against a heavy and flat sea stone that made an excellent perch for him to rest against. He was eating a clam from its shell, ripping the meat out with his sharp teeth into his mouth and chewing loudly. Once he had what he wanted he crushed the now empty shell and tossed away the broken shards over his shoulder without much care. Upon hearing his brother approach he turned and sat up to face him.
“Oh Raestrao, it’s you. Finally done with those boring lessons? Did our slave-driver of a father finally release you for the day?” The siren with a green shark-like tail ran his hand through his spiky brown hair and smirked at his older brother. His emerald eyes staring into his brothers half lidded and leering whisky shaded ones. “Is it just you? Where are the others? I thought we had all agreed to meet here today. ” After picking up another shell from his little pile on a platter (which he most likely stole from one of the servants) he pried it open with just a flick of his finger. “well hello to you too. It’s Just me so far, sorry that isn’t good enough for you, your high and mightiness.” he spoke sarcastically as he lifted the shells to his lips. Raestrao rubbed the back of his neck with a sigh.
“I...I didn't mean it like that. It’s just I didn’t expect it to only be you, not that I’m not pleased to se..” Sslllurrrrrrp. Before the sentence could be completed it was interrupted by the very loud, and very deliberate sound of Aomaris sucking the clam meat out through the tiny opening of the shell. Although annoyed, Raestrao attempted to continue. “ I only meant to say it’s been so long since I was last with ALL of my brothers. I was just hoping all of you would already be waiting for me to…” Slllurrrp. Once again an intentional interruption. A wide mocking grin appeared on the rebellious younger brother's face at his successful bid to get under the others' scales. “Will you please stop that and let me finish!? That’s so immat..” ssssslllllluuuurrrp. “AOMARIS!! Knock it off!!” The angry outburst was enough to stop the unsavory sound as the offender finally pulled the whole thing into his mouth very easily without a sound. He swallowed it with a victorious grin. One could practically see the boiling water bubbles forming from Raestao’s ear fins. An amusing sight indeed.
“I know, I know, calm down, I’m only messing with you. I know what you meant, loosen up a little. you are as wound up as an anemone that's just been poked.” He twiddled the now empty shell with his fingers playfully, but instead of crushing it he flung it at his brother. “hey, think fast!” Without a bit of hesitation the target of the flung shell lifted his golden glimmering tail and flung the mollusk away, sending it flying in another direction with ease. A yelp of a particularly annoying snivelly servant could be heard in the distance. “Yowch! Who did that!?” The two boys flinched before Aomaris let out a snicker, his brother giving him a glare in return. “you’re so reckless!” With a shrug the younger brother slid back down to a resting position. “Whatever, anyway to answer your question, Uzaeris is off with his mother in harp lessons and Zecaeru was off somewhere with Izroul.'' The moment he finished speaking his posture stiffened ever so slightly, and his brow furrowed. “you know...come to think of it, Izroul hasn’t been around that much lately, and when he has been, he’s been acting...weird.”
“What’s weird?” The two noble sons turned to see the second son approach, elegantly swimming up to them. His eight long red tentacles with the ends streaked in purple pushed against the water, propelling him to his older and younger brother. “So sorry to be late, mother just wouldn’t let me go until I got my melody just right on a particularly complicated piece. I managed as soon as I could. So, what are we talking about, what is so ‘weird’?” Uzaeris lifted a hand to his face and delicately flipped the long bangs that covered his right eye as he integrated himself into the conversation effortlessly. “Ah, good to see you again Uzaeris, glad to hear you are done for the day as well. No need to apologize, we were just waiting for you and the others. Aomaris was just noting that Izroul has been acting strangely lately, which I have to admit I have noticed as well. He is usually the first one to wait for the rest of us and yet, I haven't seen much of him either. That’s one reason why I was so surprised to see Aomaris here first, well that and he is never punctual for anything.” Aomaris sat up and crossed his arms obsitently.“Oh shut up Raestro! At least I dont have to be stuck in those stupid lessons like you.” Uzaeris placed a hand on his hip and the other to his chin contemplatively.
“That is uncharacteristic of him. He values our little brotherly get-togethers more than anything, especially in the rare moments when it’s all five of us like today, but you are right. He is nowhere to be seen.” Aomaris pushed himself off his makeshift lounge and stretched “ I wouldn't get too worried just yet, he is probably just avoiding the castle staff and our blowhole father…ever since his mom...you know...they have been even crueler and more sadistic than ever before. He might just be taking some time to...make himself seem stronger for us.” The middle brother's green eyes focused on the ground, avoiding the gaze of the other two, who grew silent as well. They didn't like remembering that horrible and tragic day, or the aftermath that came from it.
However, their empathetic moment of silence was broken by the youngest noble brother arriving. His blue dolphin-like tail wagged as he sat upon the flat stone Aomaris had previously rested upon. “Hey guys! What’s with all the long faces?” He beamed at his brothers and tilted his head curiously. Of all the boys, his face was the most youthful, despite not even being the youngest. “It’s nothing Zecaeru.” Raestrao turned to him and smiled “We are glad you could make it...but...where is Izroul? Is he not with you?” The eyes of the three older brothers darted around searchingly, their concern slowly rising once again. Zecaeru’s eyes nervously checked behind him and his voice became higher and unsure. “oh uh! Yeah he is! Or…well he was. He was right behind me but um...we...we were having a race! I guess I won! he just hasn’t caught up yet! Yeah! Heh heh…” Three pairs of suspicious eyes bore into the black haired merman unconvinced. He was always an awful liar. “Really?” Aomaris raised an eyebrow, his voice dripping with dubious derison. This only made Zacheru defensive in turn. “Yes really! What? You don’t believe me?” He sat up staring down his toughest brother defiantly, who only puffed out his chest and placed his hands on his hips, speaking down to him, towering over the shorter siren.
“No! I don’t. Somethings going on with Izroul and it almost sounds like you know what it is, and are covering for him.” Aomaris narrowed his eyes at his brother's baby blue ones, which glared back up at him. “Are you calling me a liar?!” “I’m not calling you a truther!” “That’s not even a real word!!” The tension between the two was quickly heating up, before Raestrao pulled Zecaeru away. “ That’s enough!” Uzaeris pulled Aomaris back. But,knowing that he was the strongest and could easily escape his grip to lunge back into the fray, he held him back with his tentacles as well. They were instantly slapped away in disgust by the brutish brother. “Hey! Get those off me man! you know I hate it when you touch me with those things!” Aomaris snapped at the red haired brother as he rubbed at his arm, making sure no sucker marks were left behind. “ There is no need to fight! But Zecaeru is right, that really isn’t a word.” As the most intelligent one, Raestrao couldn’t resist correcting him, which only made Aomaris growl in annoyance. “However! Aomaris is also right! We are only worried about Izroul, and you seem to be the one who has spent the most time with him lately, is something bothering him?”
Zecaeru turned away as Raestrao put a hand on his shoulder, silently encouraging him to come forward, out of concern for their youngest brother. Before another word could be said, a voice called out to the four of them. “Wait! I’m here! I’m here! A siren with bright vivid orange hair and a tail with scales as black as the inky ocean depths swam forward. He was panting and out of breath as he finally arrived at their brotherly reunion. “W…wow Zecaeru, you sure are fast, you left me in your bubble trail. Congratulations on winning our race.” The exhausted merman glanced over at his blue-tailed brother with his knowing indigo eyes. He gave a subtle affirmative nod to him before turning to the rest of his brothers, once again speaking before they could even get a chance to. “I’m sorry I was so late, and that I haven’t seen you all as much, I’ve been avoiding ...father, and the castle attendants. It’s been hard ever since the marriage arrangement was made. Everyone has been on edge. I know it’s been in all your minds and I didn’t want to burden you, or get you in trouble with Father, so...I’ve been doing other things on my own…I hope that’s alright.” He placed his black coated hand on his chest in sincerity.
At first, there was only uncertain silence. Zecaeru then broke away from the hand on his shoulder and went to the side of his kneeling brother. “See I told you! He just got left behind in a race. He’s fine.” The three elder brothers looked at each other. They could tell there was still something amiss, something that still seemed off, but it wasn’t their place to question him further or refute his claim. Izroul might be able to read their minds, but they could not read his. “Very well then Izroul, if you say nothing is wrong then we believe you.” Raestrao was the second to speak up and held his hand out to him. “But just remember, you can always trust us with anything, we are your family. Now come on, let’s catch up.” The youngest siren couldn’t help but smile at his older brother and took his offered hand. Soon they dove back into their favorite pastime of telling each other about their lessons or adventures and not wasting a single minute of the precious time they so rarely had to spend together. Soon hours went by, and their time for brotherly companionship had to come to an end. The siren quintet had to part ways as the noble sons were called for by their mothers. Before Zecaru left, he gave one last glance to Izroul, looking at him thoughtfully, as if saying something to him in his mind. Izroul affirmed with a nod. Having his answer and seeming pleased with it he swam off back to the castle. The other brothers took notice of their exchanged looks, wariness and suspicion still weighed down on their minds. Knowing what his brothers were thinking, the non-noble son just smiled reassuringly and waved them off with a cheerful farewell until they were gone. Soon, he was entirely alone. He wasn't allowed a real room in the castle. There was no place for a Bastard child like him, only kept alive at his brother's behest. Oftentimes it would greatly upset him, until recently that is.
Once he was sure he was out of his brother's line of sight, he made his way out of the boundaries of the castle and through an old forgotten and hidden route shrouded in darkness and shadow. It was likely thousands of years older than anyone knew of, but Izroul had stumbled upon it by sheer accident, or perhaps by fate, shortly after he first heard the human voice. He finally reached the end of the long narrow tunnel and pulled aside the heavy rock that blocked the entrance to his hidden place. Once he was inside he pushed the boulder back, but not all the way. Just enough so that he could pull it aside again to leave without getting trapped. At long last he was back in his secret grotto. All around him were the items he had either collected or was given by the man from the human world; trinkets and gizmos, maps, paintings, tools and many, many toys. The crevices and crags of the rocky cavern walls around him made natural shelves to store his vastly growing collection. Directly above the grotto were cracks and gaps in the rock, allowing patches of light to shine through and illuminate the undersea cave.
One crevice in particular however, did not reveal glimpses or points of light from the rest of the perilous ocean. It was in fact an actual tear between the decaying sea and the human world's waters. It was barely big enough to put just one arm and a shoulder through, and it would be impossible to traverse through it being the size he was, he had already tried. Only the very tips of his fingers could reach out on the other side, and for the first time he had felt air, a cool blowing and refreshing breeze blew against his fingertips that made his skin tingle.
It was in this place the voice was the strongest and loudest. Since then he had spoken to him many times in secret, reading his thoughts from beyond the threshold, and responding back to him. He was a kind old human man, a warlock! One of very few allowed to use magic in his world. The warlock taught him so much, told him of humans and how they walked on land like crabs scuttled across the sea floor. How there was peace among many countries, lands and people. There was war occasionally but it was never constant, and only among certain groups, but for the most part, instead of massacres and conquering, the humans attempted to solve their problems through diplomacy and compromise. There was no danger lurking at every corner. Humans could even sleep without fear of being prayed upon if they closed their eyes for too long and let down their guard. Apparently when humans slept they dreamed, visions occurring in the unconscious mind that could be absolutely anything and have various meanings, just like humans could be anything. The more he learned the more he wanted to know and the kind man was more than happy to teach him. He had learned so much in the past month and a half talking to him. He had only stayed a few days when they first spoke, before he had to return to his home and family. But he promised he would return to teach the lonesome siren all he could about humanity and even bring gifts. And he was good to his word.
Every so often an object small enough to fit through the tear between the worlds would slowly float down from above and into his awaiting hands. Then the man would explain what it was in detail and answer any other questions he had. He had found happiness at finding his very first friend outside his brothers, and a new passion to go along with it, something he was forbidden from having. The only other person who knew was Zecaeru. One day he had followed Izroul to offer to play and spend time with him. He noticed his brother sneaking off someplace, and unable to resist his curiosity, he followed him and discovered his secret. Upon finding that his private grotto had been compromised, Izroul was terrified he would tell their other brothers. He did not want any of his brothers to get involved, to protect them from the consequences of any punishment that could come with being found out. Izroul made him swear to keep it a secret and tell no one. Thankfully (surprisingly) he did, on the condition he could come visit as well sometimes. Izroul agreed to his terms and he shared his new hiding place and secret friend with him, acting as an interpreter for the man's thoughts, speaking for him. His youthful older brother was just as interested and fascinated by the humans too! Most of all the energetic merman enjoyed the talk of toys that the old man made and sold. It was something the two could share together.
However, it could only be between them, he could not burden his other brothers with this secret. Raestrao already had enough to deal with as the heir, and now after getting betrothed to a powerful siren princess from another kingdom, he will soon become the new Sea Lord, and he knew how heavily that weighed on him. He could not add any more to his plate. Uzaeris May find it interesting but he may tease him about it. His mother also had high expectations of him to be the perfect siren, so he may see humans as only a form of energy, playthings or something to charm rather than be charmed by, he wouldn’t understand. Aomaris would be the most against it for certain. He has always been his greatest protector and defender of the abuse he had suffered at the hands of his father and his underlings. He would always be grateful for the support… but, he knew his elder brother would see what he was doing, communicating with another world, as a threat. it was indeed dangerous, especially for him! If their father ever knew, Izroul would surely be killed or tortured, his collection destroyed and his human friend may even be put in danger as well. No, he could not risk it, he trusted his brothers and loved them more than anything, but this was a path he had to travel alone.
The little merman lay against the sandy floor of his grotto and looked at one of his favorite treasures, a book. He could not read the words but he loved the pictures. Reading was a grand privilege only for his brothers to have. Acquiring knowledge and learning of new places and information was not to be wasted on the bastard son. He was forever forbidden from any pleasure or advantage. But it wasn’t the same for humans! They have the freedom to learn whatever they like whenever they want. His fingers traced along the inky black symbols that made the letters and words he could not decipher. At least the man was kind enough to read it to him and his brother earlier that day, so he could understand the context of the illustration and think over the story in his head, again and again.
It was the story of a sad girl whose parents had died and only had a cruel stepmother and stepsisters who made her sit by the cinders of something called a fire, a hot and painful element not found in water but gave off a light that danced and swayed like seaweed . He felt so lucky his brothers were good to him unlike these sisters, even if the stepmother did remind him of his father. Her name was Cinderella. She wanted so desperately to go to a grand ball but she was forbidden from going and the dress she made was destroyed and torn apart by the ripping claws of her jealous sisters. Just when all hope was lost a fairy came and rewarded her for her kindness and good heart by giving her a new dress, a means to go, and the demeanor of a princess. But, the spell would only last until the night turned into a new day. She had a wonderful time and met the prince and danced with him, falling in love with each other, but when midnight came she had to flee as the spell faded away and left behind a slipper, an odd piece of garb that humans wore on their “feet'' to keep them clean and protected from the earth they tread on. But this one was made of glass. He wondered if most shoes were made of glass, one would have to be very careful not to break it as they walked. The prince found the slipper and searched everywhere for the maiden, claiming whoever could fit the shoe would be his bride. The prince looked all over the kingdom and eventually tried the shoes on the stepsisters but it would not fit either. Then he saw the poor Cinderella covered in black from the fire and dirty. He offered for her to try, it was a perfect fit and he recognized her once. He made her his princess and lived happily ever after.
That was his favorite part. Happily ever after. He wished he could be like Cinderella, witha magic spell to turn him into a human. He would explore that world, and get away from this one. Perhaps he could find love of his own. Sirens were known for being the best lovers and fed off sexual energy of other merfolk and even humans, using their beautiful voices to charm them into giving themselves freely to them, that energy was their main food source. It is said to be the most amazing thing any siren can experience. He wouldn’t know though…he was often left to starve while his brothers were given the energy freely by the noble merfolk and servants, or given banquets of the finest foods. He had to survive on the weak and meager energy of any leftover scraps and crumbs of ingestible food that he could find, or whatever the noble sons would save for him. His brothers would also give him some energy with their familial affection and attentive care. But love, that is romantic love, seemed different than the passionate lust and desire his kind was known for. Love was unconditional and special, it was hard earned and was based on connection rather than attraction alone, it was deep and more meaningful and could persist through the hardest of trials and tribulations. He wished with all his might to one day find someone to love. A human to love, who would be kind, who would not shun him as a mistake or pity him, someone who would willingly support, trust and share a life with him. Someone proud to call him theirs. But, that was only a fantasy Only a dream that was only a wish his heart made. For now, he was pleased with the idea of love. Izroul started up at the small swirling whirlpool portal above him that led to the human world where love existed. He quietly rested, Imagining what it was like, if he were a part of that world.
Chapter 3: of Fish and Family
Harold Anderson awoke from his bed in the captain's quarters of his little ship. The gentle waves of sea had rocked him into a calm sleep that night, just as it had done for the past few weeks. He got himself dressed and ready for the new day. Before heading out, he opened a standing birdcage beside his bed, releasing the two pure white doves that were inside, to stretch their wings and flap about as he filled their dish. The doves eagerly flew over to feed on the seeds that their master had left for them, as Haolrd went to the galley to make some breakfast for himself and his fish-tailed friend. Eggs, bacon, fruit cheese and potatoes. He made two plates, stacking on extra food on the second plate. He picked up the two morning meals and went back above deck. His boat was anchored within the cavern of Open Wound Rock, one of the weakest points of the link between the two ocean worlds. In the very center of the cave, there was a small fracture that kept the two worlds apart in the form of a small whirlpool. it was no bigger than a bucket rim, and it was far easier for things to enter the fathoms below, than it was to come up from them. Local legends told of siren voices that could be heard echoing from the hollow echoing walls, and of treasures that were lost to the bottomless depths around these parts. This was the largest and most accessible of the leaking gaps. He had been fishing in the area nearby when he first heard the mournful sobbing of his new friend, there must have been a smaller leak below where he fished which allowed the two to connect.
He was immediately drawn into, and sympathetic, to the child’s plight. It had been a long time since he had delved back into the world of magic and merfolk, but he could not turn his back on this boy. He was so eager to learn and was starved for kindness outside of that of his brothers, he had mentioned once or twice. Harold took things slow, he knew the boy would not reveal his name, knowing how powerful and personal a siren's name can be to those who know it. He had instead taken to calling him by terms of general endearment such as “friend, young man, my boy, and son.” The latter of those options is what the young merman favored most in particular. He did not speak much of himself, only why he had been crying so bitterly that day. He had told Harold that he was the widely despised and disparaged son of a powerful merman, who was cruel beyond mere words. He only had his four older brothers to care for him. He said nothing else about himself since, which was perhaps for the best. He was much more interested in listening to Harold speak about himself and humanity, then dwell too much on his predicament. The old man could just picture the starry look in the siren's eyes as he spoke the more he found out. He was indeed special, mind reading abilities were rare and powerful, but could easily be very overwhelming. Especially when most of the thoughts you hear are of great quantity and negative quality, which seemed to be the case with this lad. He pulled up his deck chair and sat down on it with the plates on his lap. He sat in front of the ship banister and began to let his mind form the start of a conversation, as he began to eat his breakfast. “young man…son? Are you there?”
Below in the grotto, Izroul had stretched from his resting as he heard the kind man's voice appear in his head. He grinned and sat up, calling out to him before giving a gentle yawn. “Yes sir! I am here! Good morning!” The sweet but low toned voice of the merman responded back. “I have some breakfast for you, and your brother. Is he with you this time?” The siren licked his lips ravenously at the mention of breakfast. He was very often famished, and food was far and few in between whatever energy his brothers could give. But since he met the man, he had offered him some whenever he felt his energy low. He had never experienced such flavor and indulgence before. Zecaeru loved it even more, most of his questions aside from those about toys, games and what humans did for fun was about their food. His imagination had been sparked and his taste buds had been enlightened, as he was given the scraps that fell from above. Apparently he had even been experimenting with his own food with what he could find from the castle kitchens.
“Thank you! No, he is not here right now, it is just me...but he promised to come back and see us again later this evening! would it be alright if you could save it for him, until he comes back? please?” Izroul was normally not one to ask for anything, as it was never given to him, or his brothers already did their best to provide it, but he still did not want to burden them by asking. The only things he truly asked of them was their company, when they could give it. But, with thekind man it was different, he liked his questions and curiosity, he did not scold or scorn him for doing so and often happily complied with his small requests. “Yes! Of course. I will make more for him later, but you should still take the food I made for you both while it’s still warm. An old man like me needs that extra strength, so do you. Are you ready?” Izroul quickly swam around looking for one of the plates the man had sent him, scooped it up and swam upwards just below the portal “ready!” And with that, Harold raised the plate over the edge of the ship, and tilted the steamy and savory contents off the plate and into the whirlpool below, before it completely vanished out of sight.
Once the food had been sucked down through the swirling water, it manifested out with a twirl into the decaying sea and onto the awaiting plate the siren held out. He leaned down and sniffed the enticing aroma of the lovingly prepared meal, floating back down to the sandy sea floor to eat. He scooped careful handfuls of the food into his awaiting mouth before melting into the flavor. As starving as he usually was, he took great time and care to eat and savor each mouthful and bite to make it last as long as possible. He knew what some of the foods already were. Cheese and fruit were easy to identify even in the decaying sea. The odd white and brown chunks known as “potato” tasted earthy. It was the inside of some kind of root or vegetable. And the red strips were some sort of meat, but not like any fish he had ever eaten, it was juicy and hearty, the flavor was richer and crispy, he had a feeling his brother Aomaris would love it. The only things he was still confused by were the fluffy yellow lumps. “ What are the yellow things called again?” He asked as he lifted some to his mouth and ate them. “Those are eggs, I’m sure you are used to fish eggs, but these come from a different kind of creature, a bird called a chicken. Izroul tilted his head, “Bird? What is a bird?”
Harold leaned back in his chair, looking over at some gulls that had built a nest within the cave crevice, he could hear the chicks quietly calling for their mother to bring them food and picture the sight in his mind's eye. “Well, a bird is an animal, they have a beak somewhat similar to a squid. They have wings of feathers while fish would have fins. They help them fly through the air as a fish would swim through the sea. I myself have two birds of my own as pets. They deliver messages for me while I am out at sea.” Izroul admired the image in his mind. It all sounded so fascinating. He would love to see one in person someday. They sounded so free.``so little one, what would you like to learn about this time?” Harold peered down into the swirling water, allowing him to choose the topic of the day. Izroul thought, what did he want to know about? His mind wandered to his brothers and seeing them yesterday. Were human siblings as close as they were? Or, were the families cruel and disjointed as his brother's mothers were? Or as monstrous to their own children as his father was. “Family...what are humans family like...do you have a family?” Harold looked surprised as he asked this of him. A rather complicated question, but he considered his words carefully “Family is your kin, but it is not always by blood. Family is those who you care for and love. Mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, grandparents and cousins. Some families are large, and some small. But even if you are not related, you can still choose your own family if you feel that familial love, and they return it.”
The merman was amazed, you could choose a family, as long as they cared for you and you felt it in your heart. a pink hue graced his cheeks as he timidly asked another question with hesitance. “L...like you and I? We are not of the same blood, or even the same species, and we have only known each other so long but…you feel like family to me…” Harold was taken aback at the endearing confession, but his astonishment quickly dissolved into a warm tenderness. “Yes, I suppose so, like you and I. I’d be honored to call you family, son.” Izroul’s heart leapt in his chest as he felt a warm sense of belonging enrapture in his being, at his acceptance of him.
“Now, to answer your other question, I do in fact have a family back home as well, my son and his wife, and my darling granddaughter. Who is likely around your age, in human years at least if you are as young as I think you may be. She is a lovely young woman. They are all very dear to me.” Izroul’s purple blue eyes were shining. He wanted to know more about the kind warlock's family, surely his family was loving and kind as he was, “Do you all get along? Do you treat your son well? What are they like? Can they use magic too?” For a few moments he was met with silence, his mind was hesitant and went blank, blocking him for a split second, before he relented into honesty. “unfortunately, my son and I are estranged. He knows of my magic and fears it and the risks that come with it. Terrified and distrusting of it’s chaotic nature. People fear what they do not understand, which has led him to resent me. I have tried to raise him well and still love him very much, even if he distances himself and pushes me away. He has refused and denied his magical blood, however, my granddaughter has potential. She and I are much closer.” Izroul could feel the sorrow that came with these thoughts, so not all human families were perfect, but he empathized with his friend. His son sounded like his father but not nearly as bad obviously. But at least he had his granddaughter, his thoughts were very positive towards her.
“What is she like then?” Harold smiled as his memories of her flooded his recollection, knowing the young mind reader would see them. From innocent childhood to her inquisitive adolescence, He watched her grow and age. Izroul watched the thoughts with captivated attention as the images played out. His admiration and fascination with the beautiful girl with long sleek black hair and vivid green eyes only increased as he saw her transformation from a starry eyed child to a strong and smart and independent young woman. She was so complex. She was clever and witty but also refined and charming. She was courageous and resilient but still playful and good natured. And just like him, she was curious about the world and had a longing to find her purpose. She was so many wonderful things, she was so perfectly…human. “She...she is astounding!” Suddenly a warm feeling in his chest overtook him as his heart raced and heat rushed to his face. “Yes, she is...in fact, that reminds me, I made a gift for her, but she insisted I give it to someone who needed it more. Someone just like you.”
Harold stood up from his chair, setting the now empty plate beside him and reached into his bag. After finding what he was looking for, he unfolded the doll from his handkerchief and brushed it off. He straightened the bow on it’s collar to make it presentable, and gave it a kiss on the cheek for luck, before turning back to the boat's edge. With only a moment's hesitation, he dropped the doll into the water and allowed it to float down to the lonely merman. The memory of what his granddaughter said to him lingering in his mind. “Give him the doll. It can be one of his first, and keep him company. No one should have to feel alone.” The words filled Izroul thoughts as he reached for the falling plaything with the likeness of the human girl. He gently caught it in his hands, admiring its detail. the green button eyes shimmered, it’s stitched-on smile that beamed up at him. And the thick long locks of dark yarn hair. He gently ran his black fingers along the doll's cheek as he stared at it speechlessly, before finally collecting himself to ask one last question. “May...May I know her name?” He knew names were not as personal to humans as they were to sirens, but he felt like he had to know nonetheless. “Her name is Mika.” Mika…The sound of it just felt right as his mouth formed the name and repeated it as his fingers moved down to the tail of the it’s tiny bow. “ My brothers have always been all I have ever had, until now…thank you sir.” Izroul could feel his lip quiver and eyes squint with joy as he hugged the doll close to him. “You can call me Harold, Harold Anderson.” The voice gently told him. “Then thank you, Harold Anderson. '' he rubbed his eyes and let out a happy sigh...there was one other thing he wished to know about before he would go back to his brothers. “Mr Anderson? What can you tell me about...falling in love?”
Chapter 4: Look at this stuff, isn’t it Neat?
The four noble siren sons swam together once again since the time they spent with one another yesterday. Raestrao rubbed his whisky eyes with his index finger and thumb, they had heavy tired bags underneath them, he was visibly quite tired and exhausted. The prince had spent the entire night studying and finishing his duties he had not even been assigned yet throughout the night, so he may have time with his brothers for as long as possible. Thankfully it just barely worked, although it did cost quite a bit of energy in exchange. “Why all this extra work Raestrao? Father isn’t so strict he would make you work all night.” Uzaeris questioned his brother as they maneuvered through the castle halls. “Yeah! why the rush?” Zecaeru was also curious. Raestrao always worked hard and did his duties diligently to get to spend time with his brothers, but to go the extra mile and wrap it up so quickly was unlike him. “I just wanted to spend extra time with you today, that’s all.” The eldest brother held his head high to reassure his brothers and dismiss their worries. Aomaris was the only one who was quiet...for a while. As they approached their meeting spot by the border of the castle walls he spoke up at last. “let’s cut the bullfish, this is about Izroul, isn’t it?” The words had an immediate effect, and all four of them stopped in their tracks. Raestrao did not answer.
The middle brother sighed and crossed his arms. “called it. You are worried about him, just like the rest of us. He says nothing is up but we all know him well enough to know that something's definitely going on. We are his brothers after all.” Aomaris shot a still suspicious glance at his younger brother, whose face turned into a pout in response, before turning his head away. “I already told you he’s fine. More then fine!...mfph !” As soon as he realized he said more then he should, he lifted a hand over his mouth in surprise and guilt. Uzaeris raised a intrigued brow, “more than fine? So then, whatever is happening has been something good? Why wouldn’t he tell us then?” Zecaeru avoided his brother's gazes which were now all focused solely on him. “Come on! Spit it out already! Why would he tell you and not the rest of us?!“ Aomaris swam to face the smaller blue tailed merman but was stopped by his arm being gripped and pulled back by Raestrao. “Stop, quiet.” While Zecaeru gave a relieved sigh, the brother that was held back just looked angry and confused. “Quiet!? Don’t you wanna know why...” “I said quiet! All of you, and clear your minds...listen.” Once the brother were silenced by a whispered but stern hiss from their oldest brother, they obeyed. They closed off their minds and opened up their ears,...and then, they heard it. Singing. Not just any singing but a siren song. They had not heard this particular voice for many years. All four of them quietly swam in shocked silence toward the source.
There, a good distance away from the castle and prying ears of nosy castle lackeys, they saw their youngest brother, his black spindly tail swaying as he danced and twirled. His voice rang smooth and resonant but soft and quietly as he sang a wordless song. It was such a sight to see, his brothers could not help but let their thoughts roam free until the singing abruptly stopped and Israel turned to see them all, frozen. The first to come forward was Raestrao, slowly and carefully. “Izroul, we heard you singing...you haven’t sang since…” he couldn’t bring himself to finish the sentence, hoping his brother would read his mind and understand...since his mother killed herself. “You know you’re forbidden from singing! If father heard he would have you tortured or executed on the spot!” Uzaeris came forward as well in concern. “This is getting out of hand Izroul! you have to tell us what’s up! No buts or excuses! Whatever you’ve gotten into, you’re way over your head. I don’t know why you wouldn’t tell us, but you gotta let us in.” Aomaris placed a firm hand on Izroul's shoulder. “They are right Izroul...I can’t keep this up forever..I think we should show them. This is important to you so it’s important to us too!” Zecaeru was the last one to speak and held his brother's hand. Izroul knew they all truly meant what they said, even if he was still afraid for them. If they knew and he was found out, they would be punished alongside him, but he also knew he couldn’t keep this from them and gave a sigh of defeat. “Alright. I’ll show you everything.” Izroul gestured for his brothers to follow as they swam in a pack, soon arriving at the farthest stone wall away from the castle in a shadowy unused corner of the courtyard.
Patches of thick green sea moss and clusters of barnacle colonies littered along the cracks in its foundation. It was a much older wall built long before the magically sealed barrier wall ordered by their father was installed. It was very quiet and peaceful, the clamor of the castle was distant, it was no wonder why he would visit this place. “So…you wanted to show us an old wall? What’s so great about that?” Aomaris was interrupted by the stern cough of the eldest, who urged their guide to continue. Zecaeru excitedly swam in front of them. “Not just an old wall! Watch this!” he turned expectantly to observe whatever they were about to see. Izroul closed his eyes with a calm smile and spoke in their ancient tongue in a voice no louder than a whisper. “vulnus aperire.” As soon as the Latin was spoken, the ground gave a low rumble and the wall seemed to break and crack at his words. At the center of the largest mossy stone at the base. Where the stone had once been, was now a large crag big enough for someone to swim through leading into a dark passage way deep below the ground.
The three eldest brothers started in bewilderment, even the all knowledgeable heir clearly had no idea this secret path was even here. “H...how did you know…” before he could finish the sentence Izroul raised a finger to his lips and shushed him. “I will tell you once we reach the end, just trust me.” Hesitation could be seen in their eyes before the only other brother who had not been surprised swam forward. “Come on you guys! It will be great! You’ll see! unless you’re scared~.” Zaceru shot a provoking glance at Aomaris with a taunting giggle before swimming forward into the darkness. Never one to back down from a challenge or take such an insult to his bravery, the middle brother darted forward after him with great speed, leaving a jet stream of bubbles behind him. “Who are you calling scared?!” Uzaeris merely laughed at the squabbling, amusedly and went through it next, maneuvering himself elegantly through the entrance. Raestro was the last, floating there in uncertainty. He glanced at the castle, debating whether or not this was a good idea after all. But, his intellectual intrigue at the thought of something not even he knew about enticed him. His indesicion was interrupted by Izroul by reaching out an outstretched hand for him. The youngest merman did not grasp his brother's hand but he also did not pull it away. This was Raestrao’s choice to find out what lay beyond the wall. With a streak of rebellious curiosity and faith in his brother, Raestrao took his Izrouls hand who led him inside. Once everyone was through the threshold Izroul spoke a second spell.
“vulnus signare.” The crack began to close and sealed the brothers within the darkness. Before they could all fumble around blindly in the dark, a soft glow began to light up on the walls around them. Bioluminescence within the stone, which almost resembled blood veins, illuminated the passageway. “Wow...this is...amazing!” Raestro fondled the grooves of the wall as the light reacted to his touch. “Beautiful!” Uzaeris admired the colorful and intricate formation. Aomaris was stunned into silence as Zecaeru laughed cheerfully at their expressions. “Pretty isn’t it? Just wait! This isn’t even the best part! Come on!” Not giving his brothers a chance to respond, he eagerly zipped ahead. After a collective sigh the four continued, taking their time to be careful as they observed their surroundings. Soon enough they caught up to him at the end of the path where the large boulder had already been pulled aside, with Zecaru positioned in front of the entrance with a wide grin.
Izroul took the opportunity to face his brothers and explain, to prepare them for what lay ahead. “I am sorry I’ve been keeping secrets, I promise it wasn’t out of distrust or to purposefully deceive you. I was just afraid...if father were to find out about…where I’ve been going, what I have been up to...who I’ve been talking to, he would boil with rage, and I didn’t want you to get in harm's way because of me...and...I wasn’t sure you would understand. Zecaeru only knows because he followed me one day.” His fourth oldest brother spoke up in his defense. “The spell Izroul used was etched in the stone under all the moss, it was faded but It opened for me when I spoke it aloud. By the time he found out I was there when he heard my thoughts, it was too late to hide it.” Izroul looked down at the rocky ground and his black tail below him, avoiding locking eyes with his brothers in shame and guilt, until a hand was placed on his head, causing him to look up. Aomaris tilted his brother's head up to look him straight in the eyes, a look of dead seriousness on his face. “For someone who can read minds you’re still such a barnacle head, you know? I don’t give a damn what you’ve been hiding back there, whatever it is, I’d gladly deal with our bottom feeding kracken-shit of a father and whatever he could throw at me then let him hurt you for something that obviously means the ocean to you. So don’t go around keeping secrets to protect us or whatever. It doesn’t matter if we understand whatever this is or not, I care more that it has given you comfort, even to the point you’ve even begun singing again. I care more about keeping it safe for you, than I do about the consequences of me knowing about it. Got that?” Izroul stared wide eyed as his brother ruffled his hair. Raestro and Erik smiled warmly, impressed by Aomaris’ response, the sentiment was something they shared wholeheartedly, despite the blunt and crude delivery. Izroul gave a sigh of relief and looked to Zecaeru, who nodded in agreement and moved aside allowing them to enter.
The water was clean and clear, pure and untainted by blood or death. They were greeted by the glitter of metal utensils that caught the light from above. There were all manner of objects and items from beyond the boundaries of their undersea realm. Land animals and sea animals made of cloth and thread huddled together in a pile, chests filled with intricate clothing and jewelry lay next to a full-length mirror, watches and glasses hanging from chains and even books and scrolls had a stone shelf to themselves. “Wha...what is all this?” Aomaris took in everything in dumbfounded confusion. “It’s...my collection.” Izroul leaned against the wall, gazing at all his treasures with shy pride. “These are all human objects, where did you possibly get all these things? How long have you had them? Where even are we?” A million questions and concerns raced through Raestrao’s mind as he simultaneously attempted to identify each object. The bombardment of his brother's thoughts made the mind reader wince in pain. Upon seeing how overstimulated his brother had become by his wave of speculation, the eldest siren organized his thoughts and composed himself. Thankfully it seemed to give Izroul relief as he sighed. “To tell you the truth, I have no idea what or where this place is, but I've made it my own. I can’t hear anyone from the castle and the water is so clean and fresh, I feel like I can breathe and be at ease.” A smile graced his lips as lifted up and pet the head of a white kitten toy. “ I can even sing here with no one to hear me, well, almost no one…I...have made a friend.” Uzaeris who had been admiring the objects and had been trying a ring on one of his tentacles looked over at this in surprise. “A friend? What friend? Based on all these trinkets, I assume it’s not any creature down here, like a crab or a flounder. Who is this friend of yours, did he give you all these items?” Izroul nodded. “Yes, mostly, some of the objects Zecaeru made based on descriptions, drawings or duplications of what I already had.”
Upon hearing his name, Zecaeru floated down from where he had been organizing his toys to show them off. “Yeah! It’s been amazing! I’ve had so many fun ideas and new ways to try out my powers!” To demonstrate, the little merman formed a bubble of magic in his cupped hands that enlarged as he moved his hands apart. The bubble popped and his brothers looked at what he created, disturbed and perplexed. “ what the fuck is that suppose to be?” Aomaris blurted out as Zecaeru went to explain, not yet looking at his handiwork. “It’s a land mammal called a ‘ska-whirl!’ Isn’t it cu…” his starry blue eyes finally landed on what he had made and widened in horror. In his hand was a creature similar to the one in the pictures and description he heard but pure white with red eyes and a manic evil grin; Zecaeru dropped it immediately and swam away from it in terror. “Gah! What is that thing!! That’s not how it’s supposed to look at all!! Keep it away from me!!” The brothers rolled their eyes, “if things like that are in the human world I think I’d rather stay down here.” Aomaris grunted. Suddenly a smirk grew on his face, getting an idea and picking up the door to tease it’s creator with it. Zecaeru screamed in fright and swam away only to be chased as if it were a game. Raestrao sighed and tried to ignore the chase, focusing his attention on his youngest brother. “Izroul, how did you get all these items...this ‘friend’ is he...” “Yes...he is human.”
The sirens were stunned into silence, even Aomaris who had paused in his teasing of the poor Zecaeru. He had hid behind a pillar from his creepy creation. “A human!? How the hell did you meet a human??” Izroul avoided the question, putting the stuffed kitten back in its place beside his new doll. “Aomaris has a point, a human couldn’t survive in the decaying sea, they would have drowned or been killed, even if they had one of those metal helmets, we would have definitely heard about it.” The youngest of the noble sons had taken advantage of Izroul’s confession to create a cage and shoved the scary squirrel thing into it from Aomaris hand. He gave a sigh of relief, and corrected his brother before Izroul could stop him. “Because he isn’t in the decaying sea! He’s not even on the surface in the abyssal plains! He is still in the human world!” a collective shocked “WHAT!?” blurted out from the brothers mouth in near perfect unison as Izroul shot a glare at his big mouthed brother, clearly not wanting that information divulged yet.
With a sigh, he pointed upwards, answering his brother's question before they could even verbally ask. Their eyes landed on the whirlpool above. Raestrao swam up to it examining it and placed his hand through it, his face lighting up in fascination as he felt the cool breeze of the air above, and quickly pulled his hand away. “It’s...a portal. A portal to the human realm! “ Raestrao’s face then looked enlightened as something clicked. “I know where we are…this is Open Wound Grotto. But…It was said to be only a myth.” seeing his brothers' confused and curious faces made him straighten up, about to give them a lecture. “It was said to be the gateway between our world, and the human one. Long ago there were more but they faded away and diminished into small leaks, only enough for voices and sounds to come through. However Open wound grotto was the largest and the most used portal…but, it must have greatly decreased in size over time as well, it should be twice as big as it is now. The magic seems unstable as well. It’s acting like a drain, things can fall down, but nothing can go back up, except perhaps noise.”
Izroul nodded at his brother's on-point explanation. “That's exactly right. I heard his voice a little over 6 months ago, he heard me crying and comforted me, he showed me empathy and compassion. I couldn't help but try and learn more about it. We talked for a few days and then he had to leave to return to his home but promised he would come back, and he did, a month later. We have been talking ever since. Time is different there, so what would be a day for us, is only a few hours for him. He has told me all about the human world and how wonderful it is!” his blue and violet eyes shined and his voice became excited and filled with yearning. “Humans are amazing! They don't hurt each other or fight like we do, they work through issues instead of destroying them! On their lands they have animals and plants, and the people there are kind and friendly! They have towns and cities filled with shops, parks and schools! They even made all of this!” he gestured around his trove with a twirl. “ Anyone can do anything up there, even read whenever they like, they have the freedom to learn anything!” He looked upon his brothers trying to get them to understand how powerful and grand the human world truly was. Aomaris grimaced. “Izroul! You don’t even know if that's true, even if there is some truth to it humans are dangerous! You don’t even know this human you have been talking to. He could be trying to gain your trust to hurt you! How did he even know about this portal, why did he come here in the first place? They may hurt each other less but they still hurt each other, and they do it for no other reason than selfishness. No better than Sea monsters You are giving them too much credit, They are weaker than us so they overcompensate with force and deception. How do you know he’s not manipulating you? You've never even met him!” Zecaeru came over to defend his brother and his friend. “Nu-uh! The one we have been talking to isnt like that!” but Aomaris wouldn’t back down just yet “How do you know Zecaeru!?”
Izroul knew his brother was only trying to protect him from the perceived threat of his communications with another world, but he couldn't help but snap back in his human friend's defense. “I do know him! He trusted me enough to give me his name even though I have not given mine! He is a powerful warlock and has spent the past 5 months staying at my side. If he wanted to hurt me he would have by now, but he hasn’t! I’m not a fool! His mind is honest and wise. He can’t reach me, but he is feeding me his food, giving me these treasures and treating me as though we are equals! Everything I have been denied as a bastard son he has given freely without asking for anything in return! He isn’t like what you say! He treats me like all of you do!” Aomarisd and Zecaeru shrank away from his brother, startled and slightly intimidated by him of his outburst and yielded to his conviction.
Izroul himself held a hand to his mouth, surprised at his own boldness. He turned away and wrapped his arms around his shoulders and sighed. “I’m sorry…I just don’t see things the way you do…I don’t see how a world that makes such wonderful things…could be bad…” As he lifted his head up, he looked around at each precious object he had collected and the stories behind them. He opened his mouth and began to sing. “Look at this stuff! Isn’t it neat? I don't think this collection will ever be complete. I bet you didn't think I could have…anything.~ Look at this trove! stories untold! How many wonders can one cavern hold? Looking around here you’d think, he’s finally got…everything!~” He raised his arms out as he sang passionately about how important each and every piece of his collection was to him. His brothers could only watch and listen to the voice that they thought had been permanently silenced. “I've got gadgets and gizmos a-plenty. I've got who-zits and what-zits galore” he gestured to the many metallic objects that had different unknown functions. “You want thingamabobs?” Zecaeru opened a box full of odd looking cooking tools “I've got twenty!” he proudly chirped in. Izroul lowered himself down and closed the box in his brother's hand sadly. “But who cares? No big deal…I want more!”
“More?” Uzaeris viable eyes widened in surprise as Izroul blushed. He was nervous to reveal his secret wish to his brothers, but they should know how deep this went. So he continued to sing, as he twirled a music box of a dancing human couple with his finger gingerly. “I wanna be where the people are. I wanna see, wanna see them dancing! Walking around on those, what do you call them?” his mind blanked for a moment before reading Raestrao’s mind and laughed. “Oh, feet! Heh heh.” but his face sank into a somber expression as he continued. “I know I’ll never get that far…noble blood is required for learning, reading! I’d rather stroll along the surface on the, what's that word again?” he paused before remembering the word. “Streets!~” he swam upwards grabbing his Mika doll on the way as he twirled, his eyes entranced by the swirling whirlpool above, imagining what lay beyond it. “Up where they walk! up where they run! Up where they stay all day in the sun!~ wandering free! Wish I I could be, part of that world!~”
His brothers watched him, finally seeing how fathomless his admiration for humanity was, as he sank to the sandy floor between them all. Izroul stretched himself out and relaxed against the wet sand as his doll lay beside him. “What would I pay, to spend a day warm on the sand~” after a moment he sat up and looked up into his brother's faces woefully. “I bet on land, they understand...bet they don’t traumatize their sons.” He turned away and picked up the doll, running a hand over its head with a blush. “Bright young women.~ I’m sick of swimming!” He took the doll's arms and held it up on its feet. “Ready to stand.~” Izroul shot up to the bookshelf and picked up his Cinderella book. He flipped through the pages, showing his four brothers. “I want to know what the people know! Ask more questions and get more answers! “ he stopped on the page of Cinderella by the fireplace and pointed his finger to it. “Like, what’s a fire? And why does it...what's the word? Burn!~” he passed the book off to Uzaeris and swam up directly to the swirling portal. “ when is it my turn? Wouldn’t I love, love to explore that shore up above!” As he sang this last note he reached his arm through as far as it could reach, desperately wishing he could go all the way through. But, he could just barely even touch the other world, his chest heaved a painful sigh as he withdrew his hand and held it close to his chest. He let his body sink and descend with the weight he felt in his heart. His voice was shaky and filled with tragedy. “Out of this sea...wish… I could be...part of that.world~”. The final note of his song echoed off the cavern walls as he huddled into himself pitifully.
Zecaeru hugged his brother from behind, and a comforting tentacle slid over his shoulder from Uzaeris. He could feel the energy flow into him from their touch. Raestrao bent down and pet his hand over his hair. “Oh Izroul...You have been through so much, but you have found something that gives you purpose and joy. You may not be able to be human or enter their world, but I promise, we will learn every possible thing we can about them along with you. You don’t have to hide this from us anymore. We love you, our little brother. We will help you however you need and protect you. Any friend of yours, is a friend of ours.” Izroul peeked out from his crossed arms he had buried his face in and sniffled, but smiled. Aomaris looked down at their brother over Raestrao’s shoulder.
“Alright then, if you are sure you can trust him, then we have to respect that. Like I said, I will defend the right to your happiness. But I'd still like to meet this human just to make sure.” He offered a hand to help his brother up. “Really?” Izroul asked in pleasant surprise as he accepted the offer. “Well, he should be coming back soon. He seems to be able to hear our voices but I can only hear his in my mind. I can act as an envoy.”
Raeseatro raised a hand to his chin “I have to admit, it will be interesting to learn things I didn’t know before about humans.” Uzaeris smiled, seeming quite happy with this new arrangement. “Well this will certainly be fun!” Zecaeru smiled, already knowing it was. “Yeah! It’s like having a grandfather who is super nice and gives you presents!” Aomaris crossed his arms “I don’t mind as long as he gives us some food too, you said he was feeding you right? I’m starving”. Izroul couldn’t help but chuckle at his brothers, his doubt washed away. He froze as he heard a familiar voice from above and looked up. “My friend, do you have guests? I thought I saw a hand reach through the portal, but it wasn’t black or blue, it was gold. And I hear many voices down there. Are you alright?” Izroul beamed and shushed everyone. “He is here. Yes! I am fine! It’s just my brothers. They would like to meet you!” Harold Anderson gave a joyful laugh. “I would love to...however, it might be a bit confusing with so many of you now, how will I be able to address each of you?”
He had a point, Izroul hadn’t considered this dilemma but relayed the issue to his brothers. “Yeah, that could pose a problem. It was easier when it was just the two of us, but with all five of us, that would be a lot harder to manage.” Zecaeru began to ponder what to do. “Perhaps he could call us by our birth order, like everyone else does?” Uzaeris suggested, but Raestrao shook his head. “No, I’m tired of being referred to like that, we won’t just be noble sons here. There has to be another solution.” Aomaris crossed his arms “as long as we didn't give him our real names.” After each brother had spoken Harold chimed in with an idea which made Izroul's face light up. “Hm? What did he say?” Raestrao asked. “He wants to give us human names to go by! He knows many names and their meanings, we could each have one!” The brothers looked to each other, contemplating the suggestion before collectively nodding and allowed their eldest brother to answer. “That sounds reasonable, so, what kinds of names does he suggest?” Izroul closed his eyes and listened as human names filled his thoughts, ready to choose just the right one, and be one step closer to being as human as he could be.
Chapter 5: Once upon a Dream
Mika leaned against a wall with a sigh. She was in a gorgeous and grand ballroom.. She didn't even know why she was there. Most likely it was just some ball her father had set up, to find her a husband. She could see him from where she stood, talking to some big-wig or other in the crowd. The ballroom she was in had long towering walls, with windows on every side, shining moonlight through the glass. The wallpaper that lined the walls was horizontal with intricate vine-like patterns going up to the ceiling. High above everyone there were several curved skylights along the dome like roof, with a chandelier hanging down from the center. It looked exactly like a gilded birdcage in shape and design; how apropos. She knew that none of this was real, it was all a dream she constructed in her mind. Her dreams had always been alarmingly vivid and attuned to her subconscious feelings and thoughts. Sometimes, events in her dream were strangely prophetic. Like a warning, a similar situation would often, but not always, happen in reality soon after her dream. However the meaning of this dream was clear: she was trapped by her father’s pride, wealth and the expectations he had of her.
She was on the outside of the crowd of people, watching them all from an introverted distance. She had already turned down many offers to dance from various faceless strangers. It was a masquerade ball, so everyone wore masks. Mika herself also wore a costume. She had caught a glimpse of her reflection in one of the windows. On her figure, she wore a ball gown of pure white, that gave her a very bird-like appearance. On her shoulders were two stiff layers of thick ruffled lace that frayed out like a pair of small delicate wings. A pearl necklace gleaned on her throat as a matching pair of earrings peeked out through her hair. Her sleeves were long and smooth. The cloth clung to her arms all the way down to the cuff. Her cuffs were a circular flounce of lace in a similar style to her shoulders. The bodice around her torso was lined with a stomacher of layered pleats. A pannier that draped around her full skirt had a feather pattern that resembled resting bird wings. The large skirt had a long slit down the middle, revealing the frilly petticoat underneath. A pair of uncomfortable heels that pinched her toes were strapped to her feet. The only bits of color in her elegant ensemble was a blue and purple lily attached to a white ribbon in her hair, and spirals of blue and green decorating her otherwise plain white mask.
Not only did she feel like a bird in a cage, but she looked like one too. She almost resembled a bride. pure, virginal and innocent. Mika couldn’t deny she looked beautiful in the dress, but it didn’t truly suit her. She felt like a dressed up doll. With a heavy sigh, she contemplated willing herself awake, but as she looked out into the crowd, there was one familiar face, without a mask, that caught her attention; her grandfather. He was looking right at her, giving her his usual kind smile. As she looked upon him, she remembered how much she missed him in the short month he had been gone. On Instinct, she felt herself walking toward him. However, As her grandfather saw her coming, he suddenly turned his back on her and walked deeper into the sea of people. Mika tried to keep up but found herself lost amongst the elbowing arms and blocking backs of numerous party guests. Desperately, she searched around, trying to catch a glimpse of him again. Then, she spotted him. He was speaking to a group of young men. She shuffled her way through the crowd once more, squeezing between the huddled couples. As Mika reached the spot where she had seen him, she felt herself trip and begin to fall. As she braced herself to crash to the ground, a strong pair of arms caught hold of her, and held her close. In a surprised daze, she felt a warm blush rush over her cheeks, as she looked up at her savior.
The one who had rescued her was a young man with a calm and charming smile. He was dressed in a black suit with white accents and a cavalier hat decorated with a white quill feather; his hair was perfectly tucked under his hat and not visible. She could not make out most of his features, as they were covered by a unique monochrome mask. The mask in question was split between black and white and was curved over his nose and cheeks. The left side of the mask was a deep black, and had a fish scale texture that gave it a glossy appearance in the light. The edge was decorated with a fish tail on the side of his face. The only bit of white, was a single teardrop shaped gem placed below the eye, as if he were crying. On the other half, the right side of the mask was a pale white in contrast. It was trimmed with a line of lace and perfectly outlined his forehead and temple. The white half was more human-like in appearance, with a dab of bright red blush over the cheek. What stood out most though, was a golden glass lens over the frames of the eyes. His eyes could still be seen, but their color could not be distinguished behind the gold. “don't worry, I've got you.” he reassured her in a smooth and gentle voice she did not recognize.
The mysterious man set her back on her feet, holding her hand to keep her steady. Mika couldn’t help but stare at him for a moment. Eventually, she shook her head and attempted to dissipate the sudden blush that had graced her cheeks. Once she had composed herself, she shyly released her hands from his. “Thank you. Um...My grandfather, I believe I just saw him here.” Mika turned her head and looked around for any sign of where he went. “Yes, he was, but he had to leave...” he looked down at her, hoping he didn’t upset her with this news. “Oh, I see…thank you for telling me. I had just hoped I could spend some time with him, even like this...” the monochrome man frowned sadly upon hearing her disappointment. “I’m sorry he could not be here with you, I can see how unhappy you are at this party. Even though it’s for you, it really isn’t.” Mika stared at him wide-eyed in surprise, that’s exactly how she felt but she never would have expected him to know, let alone say it out loud. Who even was he? She did not recognize his voice, and couldn’t make out his face...and yet, she felt some sort of connection to him, even if she had just imagined him.
His voice was honest and serene. He sounded so sincere, she couldn't help but give an honest response back. “You’re right. This ball, this dress, these people, they aren't me. They represent my life however, I feel like a marionette, doing the usual song and dance. Only here to do what I'm expected to do..but…I’d rather be…” “free.” The two spoke the last word in perfect unison, much to Mika’s surprise. The man in black and white simply gave a chuckle. He turned and gestured to the ones who were with him. “We know how you feel, in our own way.” His companions consisted of four other men around his age, or maybe slightly older. Each wore a similar ensemble to the one who caught her, with slight variants in design. Their suits and hats were each primarily one color to identify each of them. Their masks also follow the ocean theme with different sea creatures. The gold lenses however were present on each mask.
The tallest was clad in yellow and gold, with black accents. His mask was of two beautiful koi fish circling around his eyes. His hat was adorned with golden roses. The man in gold nodded in agreement and bowed like a perfect gentleman. “very much so miss. You should have the freedom to forge your own destiny.” The second man beside him was clad in scarlet, with shades of pink. Red roses graced his hat, and the rim was folded over his face to cover his right eye. His left eye donned a half mask of a purple octopus. the tentacles curved and curled around his eye to frame it. He gave a flirtatious smirk and gave a more flamboyant and swooping bow compared to that of the one in gold. “A beautiful princess such as yourself deserves to find true love, rather than a convenient match. This may be a masquerade, but having to wear a mask all the time is no way to live. Despite how lovely you look, in the one you are wearing now~”
Mika could feel her face brighten to a shade of red that almost matched the charmer's suit. The others with him only groaned. “If this party is for you, it should be what YOU want it to be! Don’t let people dictate what you can and can’t be, or dismiss your potential! You can do anything!” The smallest one of the group spoke up enthusiastically. His suit was as blue as the sea and his hat was littered with seashells of all kinds to match. His mask was similar to the gold gentleman’s mask but instead of graceful koi, there were playful dolphins dancing in the waves on the mask.
The fourth and final member of the matching set was dressed in a deep green and his mask was the most fearsome of all; A green sea serpents slithering its long body over his eyes, in a sort of figure eight. His hat had five feathers of red and orange and the middle and tallest one a bright yellow, it appeared to resemble a flame. “If your life is this boring and you don’t like it that much then do something about it. make a change, rebel, do what you want to do and tell anyone who says otherwise to fu…OW!!” before he could finish what they all assumed he was going to say, the red gentleman gave him a stern elbowing to the ribs before he could finish his crass comment.
Mika couldn’t help but let out a small laugh. The five of them seemed very close, like brothers. She had often wished for a sibling as a child to ease her loneliness, but seeing these young men’s bond touched her heart. “Who are all of you exactly? How do you know my grandfather?” She had almost forgotten this was only a dream, but the sentence made them tense up and look away to avoid answering. “We are simply your guests, and we are happy to be invited here.” The man who had caught her stood to face her and offered his black gloved hand to take. “If I may be so bold, if you are truly tired of this song and dance, would you perhaps like to cut those puppet strings and try a new one...with me?” Mika gave a small gasp or surprise. He was asking her to dance, but it was more than that. It was as if he was giving her a way out, to her to make own choices, and encouraging her to shed the expectations of her, to do as she liked instead regardless. She felt drawn to him, even if he was just a figment of her imagination. She wanted to dream a little longer with him, and see where it would take her. Once she put her hand in his, the four men behind her smiled at the two and went their seepage ways into the crowd, leaving the pair of them alone.
The duo walked over to an uncrowded corner of the ballroom to dance. Mika placed her hand on his shoulder as the other I stained with his. Following her lead, the man with the monochrome mask put his gloved hand on her waist, which made her tremble in embarrassed joy. She regained herself however, as they started to slowly synchronize their movements. The two soon began to sway to the music in perfect rhythm. As Mika gazed down to watch the steps, she gasped upon seeing the shoes of her partner. They were not made of leather but rather of some sort of black sea glass. “Glass slippers.” he said, as if reading her mind, or perhaps he just noticed her staring at his feet. He gave her an amused smile. “Yes, they are, I suppose you could call me, Cinder-fellow.” With a sudden unexpected twist of his wrist, her glass-footed prince twirled her, before resuming their previous position as if nothing had happened. Mikas face went warm as another blush rushed to cheeks. Why was she feeling like this? He wasn't real! and yet, he felt more real than anyone she had ever known.
“Isn’t it uncomfortable?” She knew the story by heart but couldn’t imagine how anyone could actually dance in them without the glass shattering. “Yes...each step I take feels like stepping on pins and needles, but, I’d say it's well worth it to be able to be here dancing with you.” Her heart quickened as he made such a remark to her so casually. However, each word was spoken with such confidence, she found herself feeling special, and was flattered. “Don’t worry about it though, the spell will come to an end at midnight, yours will too. Then we can really be who we are meant to be.” Mika stared at him confused as he gave her an enigmatic smile. He said nothing else. He was very mysterious, and he intrigued her. She felt like she wanted some control back from this alluring bewitchment he had over her. She dug deep and harnessed some courage, and with it, she twirled him this time. To top it off, she dipped him as well, just to outdo him. Although the mask he wore covered his cheeks, they could not hide the shocked blush that had appeared underneath. With a triumphant but coy smile, Mika brought him back up to stand up straight. He stared at her for a moment, not sure how to react, but then, he gave a happy laugh. She liked his laugh, it was very adorable and endearing.
“You know, despite your dress not meeting your tastes it does look beautiful on you. I have always loved birds, and envied them. They have such freedom.” Mika couldn’t help but give a quiet cynical scoff. “Not if they are trapped in a cage.” The masked stranger shook his head at her. “All cages have latches that can be opened. But more importantly, all birds have wings which they can spread...to fly.” Just as he had said that, the moment of midnight sounded. He continued to dance with her, bit with each chime the ballroom, the people and even the floor beneath their feet began to vanish and fade away. Not only that, but the colors of the white gown Ms. Anderson wore began to peel off of the fabric like molting feathers, revealing shades of blue and purple underneath. The white feathers swirled around them and began to land and latch itself onto the attire of her gentleman friend. As his suit transformed from black to white, the black fish motif on his mask began to melt away, to reveal a matching side to the other half.
However, he did not seem to react, as his eyes were solely locked onto her. “You look beautiful.” The young Ms. Anderson looked down at herself to see she had gone through a complete metamorphosis. Her pearls were still around her neck , and the ribbon with the lily still in her hair. Bit, the white bow had turned blue and the lily had gone white, with only a tint of purple on the inside. She could feel and see a dark blue sash around her waist, tied into a bow behind her. Her bodice was now blue with a swirling pattern of a glimmering embroidered purple thread and a blue ribbon bow on the upper chest. Blue straps matching her sash hung over her collarbone. A pair of short sheer sleeves attached to the straps billowed down just past her shoulders. She guided her and hands trailed them down her body. The bulky hoop skirt had vanished and a sky blue skirt sprinkled with silver speckles had taken its place. She felt much more comfortable and free with every movement as it flowed loosely around legs. The fabric draped over the skirt was now a sheer purple fabric that was light as air and shimmered as she held the ends with her now blue satin gloved hands. The uncomfortable heels that pinched were now comfortable slippers that made her feet feel like she was dancing on a cloud.
But as her gaze came down to her feet she could see that the environment changed along with her dress, and Instead of the large round ornate floor they were dancing on before, they were now standing on the water of a blue lagoon. The vine-like patterns of the wallpaper transformed into actual vines of a large willow tree above them. On instinct and fear of falling through the water, Mika gripped the coat collar of her black suited suitor and shut her eyes tightly. The same pair of strong arms that had saved her from her fall, now wrapped around her form. A voice whispered in her ear soothingly. “Trust me. I won’t let you go.” Mika lifted her head to look back up at him, still hesitating and uneasy on her feet. “I...I’m not so sure about this.“ her partner only smiled and touched his forehead to hers. “I promise.” Mika felt her face heat up in embarrassment and looked back at him for any sign of deceit or uncertainty but only found unwavering confidence. She squeezed his hand and let out the breath in her chest she had been holding in. Then, she stood up and regained her posture. “alright, I trust you.” Her partner let out a soft relieved sigh. “good.” And with that, Her new friend smiled and resumed their dance. It was magical. He even began to hum a lovely unknown song to her, to replace the music of the ballroom. Just by the tone of his voice, she could tell he was likely an amazing singer.
“Who are you really?” Her curiosity overwhelmed her as it bubbled in her chest, she knew she had never met this person based on his voice, was he someone she eventually would meet outside her dream world? She didn’t know, but she wanted to, desperately. “You can’t tell? I thought it was obvious.” He watched her amusedly as she struggled to place him. He stopped dancing and leaned down and gave her a small seductive smirk. “I’m the man of your dreams. ~” there was a moment of silence between the two as Mika processed what he had just said, and felt herself stifle a snicker before bursting into giddy laughter. she couldn’t help herself. The man's face turned a deep shade of red in embarrassment but a smile began to form as he joined in her laughter at his own remark. “Ha ha ha, I’m sorry, one of my older brothers told me to say that, but now that I’ve said it out loud I can see how silly it sounds.” As their laughter died down the two stared at one another with rosy cheeks and quickened heartbeats. His white glove took her own and raised the woman’s knuckles to his lips. He then graced them with a kiss. “I'm sorry. I know this is all confusing and strange. And, I know this is just a dream, and you will soon wake up. I am not who you think I am, in more ways than one, but whether it be inside your mind, or in reality...I want to be with you.”
Time seemed to stand still. Mika felt her face turn scarlet with this sudden declaration. What did he mean he was not what he seemed? He was aware he was part of a dream? Who was he and how did their lives connect? Did she make him up…or could he be real? Out there somewhere in the real world? She felt dizzy with each new question that swirled around in her mind. As she opened her mouth to respond and say something, anything, A dark shiver went up her spine and shook her to her core. It stopped her in her tracks, literally. As she looked down at her feet, she saw a scaly red hand with black claws gripping her ankle tightly. It had emerged below the lagoon's surface. the water turned black. Before she could utter a sound she was pulled down below into the depths. “ No!!!” her enigmatic admirer cried out. As promised, he would not let her go. He gripped her hand that he still held onto firmly, trying to desperately pull her back up to him. Only his arm could go through the veil between the water and the surface. It was as if he was kneeling down on a frozen lake and reaching through a crack in the ice. The “water” was thick and tar-like. Mika hopelessly tried to keep hold of his wrist. She struggled and kicked the creature that was attempting to drown her in the darkness. Instinctively she held her breath, fearing what might flow into her lungs if she attempted to open her mouth to scream. whatever had gotten hold of her would not give up so easily, and dug it’s nails into her skin. A sharp wave of pain shot through her as some air escaped from her nostrils from the shock.
Looking down at the creature in the inky blackness, she was horrified at what she saw. A pair of sickeningly yellow eyes leered up at her with a sadistic gleam. a row of razor sharp teeth formed into a manic grin that gave a howl of maniacal laughter at seeing her pain. She was trapped between a tug of war between both the hero who wanted to save her and the monster that wanted her dead. To ensure the fate of its prey would be sealed, the beast gave a sharp yank. The grip was so tight it could break her ankles in an instant if she struggled in any way. The pain was too much. she opened her mouth in a grunt of anguish as water and darkness forced itself into her body. The grip loosened within the hold of her hero and she finally slipped from his grasp, leaving him only clutching her empty blue glove. She could feel herself drowning, a heavy sleepiness took over and everything became distant and far away as she sank. The muffled scream of the one who tried to save her faded away. She could just barely make out the sound of a splash. The grip on her ankles released and among the shadows she heard a garbled scream of agony from the voice that had cackled at her misery. Before she could black out, a familiar figure grasped her, and shot up to the surface with intense speed.
As they see emerged, Mika felt the air in her lungs return. Coughing violently, she choked and spat out the black water she had swallowed. A black stream dripped down her chin. A large piece of driftwood floating on the waves was holding her up. As her eyes adjusted and she blinked away salty tears, she could see it was no longer the peaceful lagoon. She was adrift in a raging sea in the middle of a storm. “I’m...ghh!...sorry...” the voice of her savior heaved in distress and regret. But, all she turned back to him, all could see was a pool of sea foam. “No! Where did you go!?” she turned around and peed over the side of her makeshift raft. Her eyes scanned over the water trying to see any sign of him under the waves. But, there was nothing but the white sea foam. She was alone. She placed her face in her hands, sobbing. her heart ached and she was terrified as thunder roared and lightning crackled. One sound that seemed out of place began to resonate and only grow louder. A mocking woman's laughter rang out all around her. Unable to take it, the crying castaway lifted her hands to her ears to drown it out. As she stared down at her knees through tears, a shadow loomed over her from behind. She only had enough time to turn her head to see a giant wave before it crashed down upon her.
Chapter 6: Bright Young Women
GASP! Mika sat up with a start from the weight of the collapsing wave. But, to her surprise and great relief there was not a ripple of water in sight. The exhausted dreamer flopped back down against her fluffy pillow and snuggled under her warm sheets. What a vivid and complex dream. Never in her life had she experienced a dream so symbolic and deep before, no pun intended. Her mind couldn’t help but linger in the handsome and kind masked “man of her dreams.” She was sure it would drive her crazy with both embarrassment and ...almost a sad sort of grief if she dwelled on it too long. Still though, if she were ever to meet him, or someone like him in real life...then perhaps their story could continue on past the tragic ending of her nightmare. Her thoughts were broken by a light tapping at her window which caught her attention. A beautiful white dove sat upon her window ledge expectantly tilting its head at her. A smile graced the young woman’s lips as she pushed aside the covers and walked barefoot to the window. Once the window was drawn open the dove quickly zipped in and fluttered around the form of its human friend, before landing on her shoulder. The dove nuzzled under her cheek with a pleasant coo.
“Hello Columbia. It’s been a while, I’ve missed you! Did you deliver my letter to grandfather?” The dove seemed to give a nod and hopped around on her shoulder. A small tube was fastened to the bird's back, like a knapsack. “Ah! Did he write back? Wonderful! Good girl.” with just a finger she gently rubbed the bird's throat. The bird happily approved and stretched its wings out in blissful pleasure. She walked over to the desk in her room. Columbia’s human perch sat down at her desk. She patted the wooden surface, urging the messenger to finalize its delivery. “Come on, lets see it, then you can go rest and I’ll give you a well deserved meal.” At the promise of food the little white bird flew down from her shoulder onto the desk in front of them and stretched its wings out. Mika carefully unbuckled the straps of its luggage and freed its wings. After a quick stretch Columbia cooed a thank you and took flight. It headed straight for Mika’s bookshelf. On the highest shelf was a handmade wicker nest with soft bedding and a dish for food and water. With the message tube still in her hands she filled the dish to the brim with bird seed and gave her little friend a pet before leaving it to its breakfast. Mika then sat down to unscrew the cap of the cylindrical container and pulled out a rolled up piece of paper. The paper was indeed a letter to her in response to the one she sent. Eagerly, she set the avian knapsack aside and sat down at her desk to read.
My dearest Granddaughter.
Thank you very much for your wonderful letter. I am so grateful we have our loyal feathered friends, Pax and Columbia, to help us stay in touch. It is good to know your father approves of the new company ship, I’m sure it will suit the needs of the company very well. As for me, I have been having a splendid time with the acquaintance I told you about, whom I can now proudly call a friend. His name is Damien. I have been teaching him and his four brothers about many things they have never seen or experienced before. They are very bright, polite and inquisitive young men. However, it has been difficult to meet with them and avoid being caught by their ruthless father. I hope and plan to get them out of the situation and to safety and freedom. When I do, I hope one day I can introduce you to them. I gave your doll to Damien as you requested and he was very grateful and touched. He treasures it. He hopes that one day he can meet you and thank you in person. He does not have much himself, he has only survived in his family thanks to his brothers, but he wanted to send something in return to show his gratitude.I have sent it along with this letter. I will likely be gone another two or three weeks, I am confident your father will handle the company well. However, as he is preoccupied with that, perhaps you can use this time to think about what it is you want to do, without his influence. If you truly wish to take over the company one day, I will happily give you my blessing and every resource to do so. But, I would never force it upon you if it’s not what you want to do. You should have the freedom to explore every opportunity. I am so proud of you. Whatever path you choose, I will support you . So, Don't worry too much about it, you have plenty of time to decide. Besides, you should do what makes you happy as well. I look forward to your next letter. I love you sweetie. I’ll see you again soon.
Love, your grandfather , Harold Anderson.
Mika felt tears begin to bubble at the corners of her eyes. He always knew just what to say to make her feel empowered and encouraged. It was also great news that he had managed to help that boy and his brothers. Damien, that was a very nice name. Her heart went out to him, every child, even a grown up one, deserves at least one toy to cherish. She wondered what he and his brothers were like...wait...brothers...how strange. In his letter her grandfather mentioned four brothers, and in her dream four young men were with her mysterious masked man. He also mentioned having a brother when he made that corny joke. Mika shook it off as coincidence, for now, and turned her attention to the capsule the letter had come in. It had felt heavier than usual. Her curiosity had been piqued. She lifted up the tube and tipped it over her outstretched hand. What slid out and landed in her palm was a smooth black and white agate stone. “Woah!” As she raised the stone to the light to get a better look, she could see it sparkled and had a beautiful glossy sheen to it. The texture was smooth and sleek, as though polished, but it smelled of the ocean. It was a sea stone. The agate was mostly a pale pearl white but had misty splotches of black, like ink dissolving in water. It was gorgeous and cool to the touch. Mika turned it over in her fingers and felt a blush invade her cheeks. Her mind once again recollected her “dream man” dressed in sea glass slippers.
A knock on her bedroom door pulled her out of her imagination. “Dear? Are you awake? It’s time for breakfast, you can’t sleep in all day! It’s already nearly 10! “ her mother’s sweet and matronly voice called beyond her door. The clock on the wall informed her that her mother was correct, it was 9:30 in the morning. Thankfully it was a Sunday and she had no obligations or study sessions, so it wasn’t that big of a deal. “I'm awake mother! Just let me to get dressed and I’ll be down very soon.” Mika stood from her desk chair and went over to her dresser to pick something out. Her mother replied “alright darling. I will prepare a plate for you then! But don’t take too long, I don’t want it to get cold.” “Alright!” She picked out a simple blue tunic with long sleeves and corset, with a dark blue skirt with secret pockets she added herself. Being the granddaughter of a toy maker had its advantages when it came to tailoring and sewing. “Columbia? I’m going down to breakfast, I’ll have some fruits and vegetables brought up to you alright?” The little white bird cooed in thanks as it snuggled into its wicker nest.
Mika sat down at her family dining room table to a plate of her favorite breakfast. She was sure her mother had prepared it for her. Mrs. Anderson was a kind and docile woman who loved her daughter dearly. She had noticed how lonely her daughter had been without her grandfather and did her best to make up for it. Her husband sat at the table quietly reading the paper, occasionally sipping coffee and absently eating his food. Mika rolled her eyes at this predictable sight, and focused her attention on her food. Her meal melted in her mouth as she savored the flavor. “Thank you mother! This is wonderful!” Mrs. Anderson smiled contently. “Ah, er..yes. It’s very good, dear. Thank you.” David Anderson lifted his eyes from his paper for a split second to nod to his wife and give a distracted thank you before returning to reading. Mika stifled a scoff to herself as she raised another forkful to her lips. The three family members sat in somewhat awkward silence, until the welcome disturbance of visitors at the door sounded. A house servant approached the archway of the dining room with a bow. “Lady Patterson and...Signora Cappini have arrived calling upon Miss Mika.”
With a renewed spirit, Mika looked up from her now empty plate at this pleasant surprise. “Lady Patterson and Signora Cappini,“ (or Naomi and Suzu, as she knew them) were her best friends since childhood. Naomi Patterson was the daughter of a governor and was a perfect lady, she was very feminine and well mannered but could be a bit rigid and ditzy. Suzu Capini on the other hand was anything but formal or high class. Her father was an immigrant from Italy who had married a native of their hometown. Her family ran a gambling house by the docks. While technically legal, it was still very taboo, so many rumors about her family being involved with criminals and even pirates were commonplace. Anyone who knew her family well strongly denied it. Their business was successful enough to allow Suzu private tutors and study sessions, where Mika and Naomi had met and befriended her. All three of them were in tutoring groups to study together as peers with other well off young women. Despite their different backgrounds they all got along like peas in a pod, despite some good natured teasing and tiffs.
With the pleading eyes of a puppy, Mika turned to her parents. Silently begging them to allow her to see her friends. David sighed and grumbled, leaving the decision to his wife. “Of course dear. go ahead and let them in.” The servant nodded and went to see the young women in. “Good morning Mr. and Mrs Anderson!” Naomi wore her usual cute white bow and a pink and white dress, while Suzu wore a green men’s coat, green blouse with a corset and some beige slacks. “Ciao.” Laura Anderson greeted them with a warm smile as Mika ran up to give them both a hug. “I hope we aren't intruding on your meal.” Naomi glanced over at the patriarch at the head of the table, who lowered his newspaper to greet their guests like a proper host. “Not at all Miss Patterson...Miss Cappini.” It was clear by the tone of his voice directed at Suzu that he did not approve of her, or her friendship with his daughter. But, she was of a high enough standing to be tolerated, despite her unladylike quirks. Suzu shared a mutual dislike of him as well, but refused to let it get to her. “ Well Mr. Anderson, we were hoping to take Mika here out for the day, that wouldn’t be too much of a problem would it?” Suzu nonchalantly asked. “May I please go out with them today? I don’t have any tutoring sessions and I finished all my studying.” Their daughter clasped her hands together in a Socially deprived plea. “It’s fine with me sweetie. David, we should let her go have fun with her friends. She has been all cooped up studying twice as hard as usual ever since your father left. I think she deserves a day out. Don’t you?” Thankfully Mikas mother was on her side, which might just convince her father. “Hmph. Fine, but you know the rules. No going by the docks or the water and be home by curfew. And don’t spend your allowance on frivolous things; if you are going to buy anything it should be something sensible.”
Mika wanted to argue but held her tongue since the answer was technically yes. “Alright! Thank you Father! Let me just go give some snacks to Columbia and get my bag.” As she ran upstairs she could hear her father nag her from the steps. “Remember to keep your window open and your door shut! I don’t want that thing flying around my house!”. Columbia was still peacefully resting in her nest after the long flight when Mika entered her room. She placed the fresh fruits and vegetables by the seed dish and gave her feathered friend a little pet. She collected her bag and was about to head out, when she stopped, looking over at the lovely stone upon her desk. Upon picking it up and holding it in her palm, it tingled against her skin, like some sort of energy resonated from it. On impulse she put the stone in her bag. Perhaps she could bring it to a jeweler and have it turned into a ring or necklace. She bid her bird goodbye, closed her bedroom door and left with her friends.
Mika, Suzu and Naomi (or the Triple Threat Trio as Suzu called their group, much to Naomi’s annoyance) made their way through the streets of their coastal town. “Man, I’m glad we managed to pull you out of there! your dad has been working you like a dog while studying, when he’s not treating you like a prize show pony.” Suzu stretched and rubbed her neck as they walked, she was a very blunt girl and cared very little about the need to filter her words when it was just the three of them. “Suzu! Don’t say that! I’m sure Mr. Anderson has his reasons, even if we don’t quite understand them.” Naomi often played the devil's advocate. She was the type of person to give people the benefit of the doubt even if it was undeserved. “Suzu is right Naomi, I’ve felt like a prisoner in my own home ever since my grandfather left. I feel like he is planning something big and is just waiting to spring it on me. Thanks for taking me out. I really need it.” Mika took the arms of each of her friends as she walked between them. They always had her back, even as kids. The two girls didn’t mind and gave a friendly laugh at their exhausted friend.
However their happy moment could not last forever as they saw a particular debutant nd her giggling gaggle of girls approaching. “Oh great, Lisette.” Lisette White was a very wealthy socialite and very well liked and popular because of her seemingly perfect life, amiable demeanor and upper class upbringing. David Anderson had tried to get his daughter to befriend her at a young age, but they never clicked. She was stuck up, bossy, and a bit of a bully with her subtlety. Mika did not want a friend like that. Both women were equally intelligent and capable. a sort of unspoken rivalry was born, and only grew as they aged. Lisette adored all the attention from her many suitors and admirers and couldn’t even fathom why her rival was hesitant and choosy when it came to the pursuit of love. Lisette found this trait of hers to be a victory over her rival. The three girls ignored her and her entourage as they passed, only sharing a brief tension filled glance before continuing on their way.
After browsing and shopping in a few stores on their little outing they decided to head to their favorite café around lunchtime to chat and eat. The Pink Lady Café was a very popular establishment for the young women in town, as well as young couples for a romantic date. The cafe’s prominent feature was the color scheme. Pink, pink all around, hence the name. Pink floral curtains, pink floral wallpaper and even pink floral cushions on the seats. The desserts and snacks were well worth the extra feminine atmosphere for those who frequented, and thus the café was often quite busy. The girls had become great friends with the proprietor, a woman who only went by the Initial ‘K’. “Hello girls! Oh! It’s so good to see you! Go ahead and take your regular table! It’s open today! I will be with you ladies in just a bit.” The red-headed hostess greeted them merrily as she gestured to a particular table, which the girls often claimed when they visited. It was the perfect spot. The table was set up right by the window overlooking the sea , with nothing to obstruct the view. It was closest to the kitchen area so their meals always arrived quickly, but had enough privacy in the corner to talk freely. The girls sat down and browsed the menu deciding what kind of meal they wanted that day. sweets and desserts? or a small light lunch? or perhaps both? Once they chose what they wanted to eat, they now had to decide on their topic of conversation.
“We could talk about our studies. Or maybe the latest gossip? Oh!...or about boys! I’ve seen some really handsome ones pass by the café!” Naomi was the kind of girl who crushed frequently and had fantasies of the perfect fairytale romance. Suzu groaned and rested her head in her palm which was propped by her elbow. “No way! That's all you ever want to talk about. Besides, just because you are a cute ditzy blonde doesn't mean the rest of us are guy magnets, well except Anderson but that's only because her father tries to play matchmaker with every wealthy business-headed family’s son he can. Besides, there are no guys that would ever be good enough for the two us~” Suzu gave a wink at Mika who gave a small giggle in return and shrugged. “No, I guess not. Not in real life anyway…probably” her best friends raised an eyebrow and spoke in unison at their friends' sudden hint of potential regard. “probably!?!” A red tint of embarrassment spread over Mika’s face as her friends now started her with eager inquiring looks.
To Mika’s great relief, K arrived to take the girls order. “Ah! K! I’ll take the Macaroni and cheese and some soda water please!” K gave her a thumbs up and took the other two girl’s orders as well. Naomi ordered a tuna fish finger sandwich and some juice. Suzu, (always one with a tongue of fire) ordered some spicy chicken puff pastries and pepper chips. All too soon, K departed their table, taking Mika's only distraction from the upcoming prodding from her friends away as well. “ So what do you mean probably?! Did you change your mind on finding a guy? Is there someone you like?!” Suzu scooted closer to her in anticipation. Naomi pouted at the disproportionate reaction compared to her suggestion on the topic. “Suzu! I thought you didn't want to talk about boys!” Suzu merely scoffed. “This is different, Patterson! this is ANDERSON we are talking about, she has NEVER shown an interest in boys before. This is groundbreaking! And this is the only time that talking about it actually sounds interesting.” Naomi puffed out her cheeks, looking almost offended. “HEY!” Suzu held her hands up defensively. “Woah woah calm down, I only meant we always hear about your crushes and ideal guy. It can get kind of old. don't you think Anderson here deserves a chance now that she actually has something to add?” Naomi looked down still a bit moody but couldn't fight suzu’s blunt logic “well I suppose you are right. It’s only fair. And, I would be lying if I said I wasn't dying to know more as well!” Mika sighed in defeat, now that BOTH of them agreed, (a rare circumstance indeed) with a united front, there was no point getting around it now.
“Well, I did have this dream last night…” Suzu gave Mika a sly grin and leaned over in a whisper. “ohhh I get it, was it your first we…” Before Suzu could finish, a red faced Naomi covered her mouth in a flustered panic. “Suzu hush!! That’s totally inappropriate! We are in public ! “ Suzu, annoyed with being silenced, licked Naomi's palm to make her let go. Naomi shrieked and pulled her hand away and quickly began to wipe it on a napkin. “It was just a joke Naomi, calm down, don’t be such a prude.” Naomi snapped her head back to her friend with a glare. “don’t be vulgar Suzu!” In order to stop her friends bickering and to clear up this embarrassing misconception, Mika quickly corrected Suzu with a face even redder than Naomi’s . She shook her head fervently “NO! No...nothing like that! It was like a storybook.” Naomi’s eyes twinkled at the romantic implication and Suzu rolled her eyes. “ugh, this isn’t one of those Prince Charming types of dreams is it?” the tiny Italian whined as she leaned back in her chair with a disappointed slump. “Not exactly, you see, it started out like this…” and so Mika went on to describe her dream, even as K brought their food and sat down to listen too. She went into detail about the ball, the mysterious quintet of men and the one she danced with. She even described the magical part where their clothes and environment changed, all the way up to the confession. She purposely withheld what happened after that when the dream turned into a nightmare. She did not want her friends to worry or pity her, and she herself did want to think back on that fear she had experienced during that point.
Naomi was practically swooning once the retelling had concluded. “That’s so romantic!! I wish I could have had a dream like that!” K agreed with Naomi. “Wow! That’s one vivid dream! It has so many possible meanings behind it. It sounds like the perfect love story.” K’s eyes had a flash of inspiration. She had always been very creative and claimed she liked to write epic stories in her free time, but she never told them to anyone. Even Suzu seemed to enjoy the dramatic narrative. “Yeah, I have to admit, that does sound pretty interesting. Your “dream boy” sounds like a good guy. Are you sure you made him up and he isn't someone you met at some point and just forgot about?” Mika shrugged, taking a spoonful of her cheesy pasta and washing it down with her drink. “I don’t think so, I couldn't make out his face other than a glance at his eyes...and his voice. He had a really lovely voice, but not one that I recognized.” Naomi frowned, a bit deflated. “That’s too bad. If only there was a guy out there in the real world who you felt a connection with, like you did in your dream.” Suzu chuckled. “Yeah Anderson, too bad you don’t have some other mystery man our age you’ve never met who wants to be with you…” Mika nodded...but then she remembered that she sort of did. “Um...well...actually…” all three women stared wide eyed and leaned in closer. Mika reached into her bag and placed the agate on the table in front of her. “Wow! That’s gorgeous! Where did you get that?” Naomi picked up the stone to examine it. “From a friend of my grandfather...a guy my age...that I never met?” Mika gave a nervous laugh as she rubbed her neck awkwardly. Suzu nearly choked on her drink in shock. “I wasn’t being serious!! Who is this other guy??”
Mika once again went into a brief explanation of what her grandfather had told her about him. She also told them about getting the letter with stone that very morning. “Oh! That poor guy, I hope your grandfather helps him. He must have really had it bad. But at least he was sweet enough to give you something so special even if it was all he could get. Maybe you two could become friends.” Naomi said as she handed the stone back. “Or more!” Suzu nudged Her friends with a wink. “Ha Ha, who knows. Either way, whatever happens, when and If I meet the right guy, I’ll just know.” Mika turned her head to glimpse out at the calm blue ocean water that led to a world of possibilities and places she had yet to experience. One day though, she would set out to see it all for herself. “Maybe he is out there somewhere right now...waiting for me to meet him too.” Her friends agreed and continued to chat as Mika watched the waves with a longing in her eyes. K kept her eyes on Mika Anderson with a knowing smile. “What a perfect protagonist.” She thought to herself “ she doesn't even know how truly right she is.”

Invisible string
Tying you to me?
invisible string-Taylor Swift
Mika’s lying on her bed, staring holes into the ceiling. She’s been replaying her kiss with Sam over and over in her head since she came home. She hopes Damien can’t hear her all the way across the house, but she never really asked how his mind reading works.
She apologizes to Damien in her own thoughts as she tries to sort through the turmoil that is her feelings for Sam. If she has feelings. She couldn’t say. Her relationship with him started so rocky, but now, she finds herself thinking about him more during the day than any of the other incubi.
She drags her hands down her face and groans to herself. Mika didn’t need these confusing feelings right now. She just wants to push them down and deal with them later. It wasn’t healthy but she’s never been good at dealing with her emotions, especially the ones that feel bigger than her body and make her want to peel her skin back.
A knock on her bedroom door distracts her from her thoughts.
“Come in!” She tells them, not moving from her spot on the bed.
Someone comes in, she isn’t sure who, and she hears the door shut behind them.
There’s a snort of a laugh, “Have you been like that since you got home?” It’s Sam’s voice, the source of all her troubles at the moment.
She sighs, “Just doing some mental gymnastics.” she deadpans with a shrug as she doesn’t move from her position.
Sam chuckles, “Don’t work too hard or you'll blow a fuse.” he jokes.
Mika rolls her eyes and throws one of her pillows at him, half-heartedly. Sam easily catches it.
She moves to sit up to fully face him, smiling, “What do you need?”
Sam tosses her pillow back. His face loses its playfulness, and he looks nervous. Mika dismisses the thought of Sam being nervous around her. Just because she couldn’t stop thinking about kissing him doesn’t mean he was as well. Sam’s face is tinged with a blush that has piqued her curiosity.
Sam makes direct eye contact with her after whatever internal battle he was fighting in his own head. “I want you to know my real name, just in case something does happen with Malix.”
His voice is low and serious, much like how it was when they first met.
“Real name?” she asks with her head tilting in confusion.
They just keep dropping new information at her feet. She ponders briefly on the fact that there’s so much she doesn’t know about Sam or his brothers. Would she ever? Would they let her into their world completely? It felt like it took such little effort for them to be welcomed with open arms. Maybe it took a few months, but she wanted them in her life. She never bothered to ask herself if it was reciprocated.
Sam nods his head, “Demons usually don’t give out their real names to humans, or each other really. Names... names for us have power. So, if you say my name, I’ll find you. Think of it like summoning me.”
“Oh...” Mika looks down at the pillow she’s holding onto and plays with the edges of it. She feels her face warming up.
As she looks down, she doesn’t notice Sam come closer to her. He leans in, to whisper in her ear, “My name is Aomaris .”
Mika feels a shiver run down her back as he takes a step back. It’s almost like his name locks into her brain, but she still feels the need to say it, “Aomaris.” she rolls his name around her mouth. She doesn’t want to say it wrong.
Sam’s face flushes brightly, “Uh yeah.” He chokes out and tries to cover it with a cough, looking away from her. He takes a deep breath. “Use it if you need me, okay?”
Once he leaves the room Mika clutches the pillow closer to her. Shoving her face in it. She says his name over and over and over again in her head.
Aomaris
She almost tries to say it out loud before stopping herself. She would be utterly mortified if she accidentally summoned him not even ten minutes after telling her. She curls up into her bed, wondering what his face would look like if she called his name, not for help, but for pleasure. She immediately tries to push that thought away, not ready to address the pounding of her heart.
It’s over. Her four years of undergrad are finally over. She can finally move onto a new stage in her life. One that isn’t looming over her with her father’s shadow.
Mika is free.
Mika’s outside surrounded by the incubi and thousands of other people exiting the stadium. She has her graduation cap tightly in one hand and is holding onto her friend Suzu tightly by the waist. Her face is lit up as she’s talking a mile a minute.
“It’s over and we did it! We did it, we did it, we did it!” Mika’s holding onto Suzu and jumping in excitement, her graduation robes flying everywhere as a fit of giggles escape the two girls.
Matthew holds up Mika’s phone, “C’mon and stop jumping so we can get some pictures!” he exclaims laughing at their joy.
“Hold on let me grab Naomi and the others!” Suzu says, “Just wait right here don’t go anywhere!” The short girl is gone in a flash to collect Mika’s other friends for some celebratory photos.
Mika’s grin doesn’t falter, even with the over looming threat of devils.
“You’re positive you’ll be fine?” James asks her, voice low and serious.
Mika whips her head around to James and she sighs, “Promise. I’m going out with the whole group, and I won’t be alone. We’ll be downtown all night in large crowds of people.” She reassures them.
“I don’t want to miss out on graduation celebrations because of some dumb devils...” She murmurs softly.
James opens his mouth to respond but Sam beats him to it. He gently knocks his knuckles on her head in a chastising manor, “We just want you to be safe doofus.” His tone is hard, but Mika doesn’t feel any anger behind it. Just genuine concern.
Erik nods his head in agreement, “Just call one of us on your way home, so we can rest easier.”
Mika rolls her eyes playfully and grabs her phone, “Okay Mom , how about this.” She teases Erik but opens her group chat with them and turns on her location for them.
“There, now you can see where I am. If you’re worried just check my location, and if I’m not downtown or on the road, you know something happened.” She tells them.
Damien gives a dissatisfied frown at her tone but nods.
 “It’s just one night.”
Erik gives Mika a glare at her tease but nods as well. “If you’re not home before the bars close, I’m personally dragging your ass home.” He tells her crossing his arms.
“I promise I’ll be extra careful!” She tells them lightly. Her smiles big and so genuine, they believe her. It’s just one night.
Before another comment could be made Mika’s waving down her friend group to take some photos together. Today was her day, and she wasn’t going to let some threat ruin her good time. She’s earned her degree; she deserves to celebrate it with her friends.
“I’ll see you guys tonight!”
Mika’s stumbling out into the breezy summer night, jogging to her car. She needed a jacket inside. It was abnormally chilly in the small bar her friends had traversed into. She had been out since early in the afternoon and it was just nearing midnight. Mika was a little tipsy and ready to call it a night soon after she sobered up a bit. It was a full night filled with laughter, beers, some celebratory shots and one Irish car bomb. She makes it to her car, that’s a block up the street from where the bar is located and opens her back door trying to dig for her jacket.
She wasn’t paying attention.
She was clumsy.
Mika is shoved from behind into her own car. Before she can move to sit up, or fight back, she sees a flash of that fire red hue before her world goes dark. She’s being blindfolded and gagged. She tries to fight back, kicking and swinging, her face tightly scrunched up. Everything she’s ever learned from the insane amount of true crime she’s consumed.
It doesn’t help much. Turns out fighting against devils who are triple your strength isn’t easy.
Her keys are snatched from her hands, and her wrists tied up. She hears them get into the driver's seat and whip her car out of the parking spot. She rolls to the other side of her backseat, hitting her head on the door.
Mika’s trying to not panic, but that’s easier said than done. She still feels her phone in her pocket, and she is reassured by that notion. That could only be helpful if her kidnappers don’t find it. She tries to sit up, and finds she successfully loosened her blindfold. She can see out of the top, just enough to see what they pass on the road.
She hears the two in front seat hissing back and forth towards each other. All she catches is something about Malix and it’s all she needs to know she’s on borrowed time. Her heart plummets as she watches for landmarks to identify where they’re taking her. She can’t see much in the dark, but she’s able to identify that they’re still downtown, but barely. They’re on the outskirts of it, where the industrial plants are.
She wants to scream, kick the seats, but she imagines that it would be worse if she did. She reassures herself that her friends know she wouldn’t leave without a goodbye and that they have her location. Hopefully the incubi brothers notice.
She feels foolish now about wanting to have a normal night out. Her life has been anything but normal for the past four months. She was naive to think she could have one free night. Mika tries to not get stuck in her downward spiral of thoughts. If she panics, she will die. Mika must keep a clear head. If anything, she’s not going down without a fight.
The car pulls into some hollowed out workspace. Probably one of the abandoned warehouses that the cities left to rot away. Forgotten. She jolts when they slam on her brakes. It sends her forward crashing into her front seat headfirst. Mika’s side door is slammed open, and she’s being dragged out. Mika thrashes her body against the devils who have her, but their grip just tightens frighteningly so. She hisses in pain. They manhandle her into a building and rip her blindfold off, shoving her down onto hard concrete. She grimaces before her eyes adjust to her surroundings.
When Mika looks up, she sees Malix staring down at her smiling with his much too sharp teeth, and his blood thirsty eyes fixed on her. His eyes roam her body, and it makes Mika feel exposed in the worst way. She tries to stay strong, meeting his feral eyes with a ferocious glare of her own. Her body shaking gives away her internal fear.
Malix snorts, grabbing her face with his clawed hands pulling her closer to him. She feels his sharp nails digging into her skin, his hold on her hurts. She tries to flinch away, but he keeps her in place.
“Told you it wasn’t safe out there girly.” He leans closer to her ears, using his tongue to lick her face. Like she was his meal.  “Can’t wait to gut you and leave your remains for those incubi.”
Mika jumps from his tongue and pulls herself back with all her weight. Her anger fuels her momentum as she slams herself into Malix, headbutting him. It sends the devil back, releasing his hold on her if anything, out of shock. The movement knocks the fabric that was being used as a gag out of Mika’s mouth. She gasps for a moment, trying to take a breath before she screams for help.
In a flash his fist collides with her mouth, Malix not needing much time to recover. His punch sends her face first onto the concrete. Her arms still tied up, her vision swims as the room spins.
“You little cunt !” he spits venomously out at her.
She spits out a mouthful of blood on the ground, she cries out, “ Aomaris! ” It’s a choking noise as she shouts.
There’s an immediate bright flash of light that cuts through the dark abandoned building. It makes the devils shrink back, covering their faces from the abrasive light. They shout a variety of curses and confusion.
When the light fades, Sam’s before her. His eyes take only a moment to find her, and they widen upon seeing her. His eyes flicker gold for a moment, before he’s on his knees pulling her gently to him. His hands cupping her face.
“You okay?” he asks.
She feels him moving her face gently, to inspect the damage. His hands are rough and calloused, but they hold her so tenderly. She can only nod, as she melts into his comforting touch. Completely forgetting about the devils and Malix.
“I got you, don’t worry.” Sam whispers.
Over his shoulder Mika sees Malix raising his hand, gun aimed at them. Her eyes widen and she gasps in Sam’s ear. It’s enough of a warning sign. His hold on her tightens and he moves her into his lap and uses his speed to protect them. He’s able to quickly move them out of the way the same time Malix’s gun fires.
Sam turns to glare at the red demon, his eyes rimmed with gold as he grits his teeth with a snarl.
“I won’t miss next time incubus.” Malixs says irritably.
Sam gently places Mika down against the wall and he doesn’t hesitate to start a fight with Malix. He immediately lands a punch to Malix’s face, sending the devil into the wall. Cracking the bricks behind him.
Malix spits out the blood in his mouth, he massages his cheek. His red eyes glare at Sam but he keeps his disgusting grin.
“Motherfucker... c’mon, this will be fun!” Malix goads Sam.
Sam’s body becomes a blur as he slams himself into Malix, full force. He throws punch after punch into Malix, breaking the brick wall behind the devil. The sound of flesh hitting the wall makes Mika flinch. Malix moves to grab Sam’s hand, stopping him briefly.
“Fuck you!” Malix grits out and uses his hellfire to burn Sam. It consumes Malix’s form and pushes forward. Sending Sam sliding back. Sam brings his arms up to shield himself from the flames.
Malix is engulfed in his own fire, and he reaches for his gun, glaring down Sam, “I’m so sick of you and your little skank! The warlocks gone and this is my territory!”
He sends round after round of bullets towards Sam. Nothing lands as Sam easily dodges with his speed. Sam appears next to Malix, throwing a punch sending the devil flying toward the other side of the warehouse. There’s a new aura mixing around Sam’s form. Green and purple circled him, as he stood watching Malix with hard gold eyes, replacing his usual bright green. Sam stands tall, as he holds his ground ready for Malix to get back up. His cold glare cutting through the dark aura swirling around him.
“Don’t. Call. Her. That.” his voice is deeper, distorted even. It sends a chill down Mika’s back, he sounds demonic.
The devils that surround the warehouse just stand and watch. Unsure of what to do. Their faces hold hesitation and fear. If they were afraid of Sam or Malix was uncertain. Mika notices how they actively do not step in though.
“Did I hit a nerve?” Malix goads, he takes a step closer to Sam before his sharp red eyes lock onto Mika.
Malix grins manically and aims his gun at her. Mika freezes, eyes wide. She doesn’t care if she’s protected by holy magic or not, staring down the barrel of a gun is terrifying. Sam lunges at the devil and tackles Malix to the ground. The two men roll around for a minute, until Sam has Malix pinned down, arm back ready to swing.
Malix doesn’t give him a single moment before he shoves his gun in Sam’s mouth, “Eat hellfire incubus!”
Before Malix pulls the trigger something in the air shifts. The temperature drops to an almost icy chill. It’s the calm before the storm. The aura that was around Sam before rages, growing larger than before as it dances around him.
Malix in fear, or reflex, pulls the trigger. Sam snaps the gun in half between his teeth, destroying Malix’s only weapon. As Sam bites down he releases a loud, feral, growl from the back of his throat. It’s the only noise next to the ringing of the gun in her ears and she can feel his rage rattling her bones. The red devil on the ground has his smug face turn to one of genuine fear.
Sam doesn’t hesitate to start throwing punch after punch to Malix’s face, his form shifting in front of her eyes. Mika is so caught up in what’s happening in front of her she never even noticed the others show up. Before she can register what’s happening to Sam, the other four brothers block her view completely. Damien and Erik are the closest fussing over her. Erik frees her from her bindings, and Damien is taking in the injury to her face.  Mika tries to look past them, to see Sam, but it’s useless. All she can register is blurs of green and she hears his voice. Even if it’s distorted.
Everything sounds so far away, it’s probably just her adrenaline wearing off. She understands that Damien and Erik are asking her questions, but she can’t find the words to answer. Her whole body just feels so heavy and sore. She worries about Sam briefly before Damien’s holding her face making her look at him.
“He’s fine, just blowing off steam now.” Damien tells her with an eye roll.
She vaguely hears James in the background talking to Sam and maybe Matthew. She wasn’t sure.
“What an absolute brute... losing it like that, and he broke his glamour!” Erik chastises as he blocks her vision standing in front of her. She can’t find it in herself to try to look past him or do much more than lean against Damien. Questions swim in her head but she doesn’t even know if they’re fully formed thoughts.
Erik turns to look back at her and frowns, he bends down to pick her up. “She needs to go home and rest. Damien and I will take her car while you three clean up here.” He says gently.
She still can’t see Sam, but as Erik lifts her and walks toward the exit, they pass a body. Malix lays under a tarp that's drenched in blood, and all she makes out is the sunken in crater of where his face should be. She squeezes her eyes shut trying to stop the nausea that formed, pressing her face into Erik’s shoulder.
Once Mika is home and the dust has settled, she’s on her bed holding the ice pack Erik has given her to her swollen cheek. He sets down a glass of water and some pain killers on her bedside table.
It’s roughly three in the morning now and Mika’s exhausted. She hasn’t seen Sam since she called for him. She’s picking at her nails nervously. She doesn’t even have to ask for Erik to know what she’s thinking.
“Sam’s getting chewed out by James and probably blowing off the last of his adrenaline. I promise he’ll see you in the morning love.” He tells her with a gentle look.
She nods gripping at the bed sheets tightly, “Thanks Erik...” She looks down at her phone and notices the plethora of missed texts messages and calls.
“We tracked your phone. So, sharing your location was the smart thing to do. Even if you didn’t call for Sam.” Erik tells her. “You should probably respond to your friends, or they’ll worry.”
“Do I tell them I got kidnapped?” She’s reading through the texts and feels her heart tighten. There was no point in regretting her actions, it was over, and she was safe.
“It’s the truth, you’re just leaving out the part about devils.” He shrugs, “Besides, they’ll be truly upset if they think you bailed without a call or text.”
Mika nods and looks down at her phone, trying to decide how to even start. “You’re right... I just, I know I could have avoided it. I guess I just feel bad for making everyone worry.” She murmurs quietly.
Erik places a comforting hand on her shoulder, “It’s not your fault that devils decided to target you.” His violet eyes soften as he gives her a reassuring look.
“Just get some sleep and don’t worry too much. If you feel bad in the morning, we’ll take you to the hospital.”
Mika’s in her bathroom the next morning, inspecting the damage to her face. She frowns upon seeing the large bruise on her cheek. She can’t cover that with make-up. It’s dark and gross, not to mention swollen. She hisses when she touches it, even just lightly. At least she wasn’t bleeding anymore.
There’s a firm rapping at her door, and she shouts for them to come in. She doesn’t leave the bathroom sink as she continues to look over her swollen face.
“Damn devil...” she murmurs.
“How ya feelin’?” Sam’s voice breaks through her thoughts, he’s leaning in the open doorway with his arms crossed over his chest.
She snaps her head around to see Sam. She just shrugs with a tiny smile, “Could be better.”
Sam’s eyes flash to her cheek, inspecting the bruise on her face. He steps closer to her and brings his hand up to hold her face. His hand is gentle as he cups her face, the good side. He tilts it to look at the bruise. His eyes darken as he frowns.
“If he was still here, I’d kill him again.” He says, voice low.
“It’s over.” Mika responds softly placing her own hand on top of his and leans into his palm.
“Shouldn’t have even fuckin’ happened in the first place. Should have gone with you.” He growls out.
Mika sighs, “There’s no use in what if’s, I shouldn’t have left my friends. Besides, it’s over.”
Sam’s hand falls and he wraps his arms around Mika pulling her into him. He gently cradles her head, but he holds her firmly, securely, to his body. Mika sinks into him easily and wraps her arms around his waist. Pressing her face into his chest.
“Thanks, by the way. I don’t think I told you thank you.” Her voice muffled by his chest.
She feels him chuckle, it reverberates through her bones. “You don’t need to thank me.” He places a kiss to the top of her head. “I would have found you no matter what.” he whispers.
Mika’s grip tightens and she feels her heart skip a beat.

Rest
Mika pushes herself too hard, and the incubi comfort her. This was originally going to be Sam x Mika, but it got away from me. I hope you like it.
Mika opened her phone to the alarm app, which was set to go off in 10 minutes. She groaned and turned it off, rubbing her eyes from the dried tears.
Mika constantly was under a lot of stress. While she was used to the weight of work and the pressure from her father, recently it had multiplied tenfold.
Her body ached from the lack of sleep, her eyes wouldn’t stop watering, and she could barely think straight. But she had work, so she forced her body out of bed. After brushing her teeth and washing her face, she got dressed, not trusting herself to stay awake in the shower. She wore a light gray sweater and distressed baggy jeans. She decided to put on some concealer to hide the bags under her eyes before walking downstairs, the smell of bacon grabbing her attention.
“Good morning miss, did you sleep well?” James asked, a small smile resting on his lips.
She immediately cleared her mind so that Damien wouldn’t catch her lie. “Yeah, I slept okay. You?” she asked, hoping she sounded convincing enough.
James must have believed her, because after he replied that he’d slept well, he didn’t question her. She made sure to push the relief down, not wanting to alarm Damien.
Mika looked at the time on her phone and rushed to put on some shoes. Erik approached her, concern etched on his features. “Princess, aren’t you going to eat something?”
She shook her head vigorously, jumping on one foot to get her shoe on. “No, I have work.”
He raised an eyebrow but didn’t push, asking if she’d packed herself some lunch. She couldn’t help but feel slightly nauseated at the idea of eating, but didn’t get the chance to decline when Matthew grinned at her. “I’ll do it.”
She forgot to keep her mind clear, her lack of sleep overwhelming her. “Is everything okay?” Damien asked, walking towards Mika.
“Yeah, I just really need to go.” she said, forcing her mind to be a clear buzz again.
After Matthew gave her some lunch and they’d all wished her a good day, she walked out of the lobby. Truth be told, she was so tired that she hadn’t noticed Sam was absent until she spotted him doing tai chi in the front yard. “Morning.” he said, not stopping his movements.
Mika smiled and waved as she continued to walk towards her car. “Good morning.”
Before she could get to her car, Sam stopped her. “You need a ride? I’m going to the gym so I can drop you off on the way.”
Mika couldn’t help but feel grateful as she was a bit worried about driving with such little sleep. “Yeah, thanks.”
*
In the car, Mika fought the urge to doze off in the passenger seat of Sam’s truck, which had ridiculously comfortable seats. She noticed him glancing at her, but he didn’t say anything.
As they pulled into the parking lot though, he asked Mika to wait for a minute. “What’s wrong?” she asked.
He seemed to be studying her face, his expression unreadable. “Tell us if you need anything, alright?”
Mika merely smiled, hoping to stop him from worrying about her. “I will.”
*
“Mmm” Mika groaned, recognizing the silk sheets underneath her. She was in her bed.
She suddenly shot up, trying to remember when she came home. She was just at work, standing at the cash register. She vaguely remembered her manager asking if she was okay and being told to take lunch.
Mika looked beside the bed, not expecting Sam to be sitting in a chair, half glaring at her. “You fainted at work.”
She nodded and looked at her bedsheets. “Who brought me home?”
“I did. Since when am I your emergency contact?” He asked, making Mika blush.
She shrugged, dodging the question as she rubbed her face. “How long have I been out?”
Sam scoffed. “4 hours.”
Mika shot up out of bed, but as soon as she did, she lost balance. Sam caught her before she could actually fall, sitting her back down. “Chill, Doofus. You need to stop stressing out so much.”
She furrowed her brows. “I’m fine, I just need to eat something.”
Almost on cue, Damien and the others walked in, carrying a plate of food in one hand and a glass of water in the other. “Rest.” He said, placing the cup and plate on her bedside table.
“I-” Mika went to protest, but James surprisingly interrupted her.
“Mika,” he said, using her real name to show his seriousness. “I understand your need to do everything you can, but you are pushing yourself too hard to function. Don’t worry about going to work right now.”
She was pretty sure they’d used their incubus powers to get her time off but couldn’t focus on that long as hot tears definitely ran down her cheeks. They cared so much, what had she done to deserve them?
Matthew moved to sit beside her. “Hey, it’ll all be okay. Wanna watch a movie?” He asked, hugging her tightly when she nodded.
After she ate, the group all settled to watch a movie in the living room. They rested on a pallet they made on the floor, Mika’s head on Mattew’s lap while her legs rested on Erik’s, who rubbed her feet. Damien sat behind her, lightly holding her hand. Sam laid down as well, his head on her stomach, him and James both rushing to get anything she needed. She began to feel the pull of sleep, no longer paying attention to the movie.
“Thank you, guys.” She mumbled, letting sleep consume her before she could hear a response.

Me Before You-Incubi x Reader
I walked back into my house and closed the door behind me, turning to face the door and sink against it, my forehead against the door. I didn’t let myself cry. Didn’t want to give them the satisfaction of seeing me break down. I tried to convince myself it was all for the best. Tried to hold everything in. Tried to be strong. But I don’t feel strong. I feel weak. I feel broken. I feel sick to my stomach. My mind kept going back to the two of them in bed together. Two people I trusted. Two people I loved the most. Two hours ago, I was happy, everything in my life was fine. My heart wasn’t completely fucking shattered with the fact my boyfriend and my best friend were sleeping with each other behind my back. And they didn’t even seem a little fucking sorry. Didn’t seem a bit scared to lose me. What’s wrong with me? What did I do to deserve this?
My chest felt hollow as the tears finally started to pour down my face. I feel so hopeless.
“Mika?”
I quickly turned around to see Damien, standing in front me with a deep frown on his face. I couldn’t even try to deflect. I couldn’t speak. I felt like I was drowning. Damien simply opened his arms to me. I let out a loud sob as I practically ran into his arms.
“I’m so sorry.” He said softly as he rubbed my back. I couldn’t do anything but sob into his shirt. I’m so pathetic. “No you’re not. Not at all.”
“Hey, what happened?” Matthew asked as he rushed in followed by the rest of the incubi. I could hear Damien hesitate. I mentally gave him permission to tell them what happened.
“Her boyfriend cheated on her. With her best friend.” I could hear a mix between sourness and sympathy in his voice as he said it.
“Oh my goodness.” James said breathlessly.
“We’re so sorry that happened to you.” Erik said, frowning. I finally pulled away from Damien and looked towards the boys. I took a deep breath, trying to finally say something, but the lump in my throat was fighting to keep my words down. Stupid.
“You’re not stupid.” Damien said with a quarter of sterness in his voice.
“Yeah,” Sam piped in, “Those dipshits are the ones that are stupid!”
James placed a hand on my shoulder, “You are amazing, Mika. You don’t at all deserve what happened to you.” But how could that be true? Why would the two people I gave everything to completely break me if I didn’t do anything to deserve it?
“We’re here for you, okay?” Matthew told me, “Anything you need, we got you!”
I pushed down the lump in my throat and breathed some air back into my lungs. I eventually spoke up, “…I- I just wanna stop feeling like this…” I managed to quietly mumble out, and it wasn’t even well articulated. What is the matter with me?
The boys exchanged looks with each other before Damien lifted me into his arms. He brought me to the living room and sat me down on the couch.
“I could make you your favorite dessert? Would that be okay with you?” Matthew asked. I didn’t have much of an appetite, but I still nodded. Matthew smiled at me before he went off to the kitchen.
“You wanna play?” Sam asked, offering me a controller and gesturing to the paused multiplayer screen on the tv, “You can kick James’s ass at video games. That outta cheer you up.” That started to bring a smile to my face. But my mind started to drift back to my boyfriend. Ex-boyfriend.
“I’ll just watch for now.” I muttered.
“Hey, you know what happened wasn’t at all your fault right?” Erik said, sitting next to me on the couch.
“I don’t know. I just,” I swallowed. Everything was spinning around in my head, “I feel so used and…discarded. I loved him so much. I gave him everything. I helped him through so much. But obviously he didn’t give two shits about me. He dropped me for someone he found more interesting. My fucking best friend of all people,” The sinking feeling in my chest came and I began to cry again, “The person I trusted most in the world. The person I was there for through everything. The person who was there for me through everything, was nothing but a liar. I meant nothing to them.” I sighed, letting out a shaky breath, “I miss the person I was before them. The person who didn’t feel so pathetic and miserable right now.” I didn’t realize I was rambling until I looked up and everyone was sitting silently, listening. Matthew even came back into the room and I didn’t notice. I suddenly felt small.
“You’re an amazing person,” James said, softly, “Those two are idiotic for betraying the trust of someone as great as you. They obviously have sorrowful lives themselves to do something so despicable.”
“Yeah, hurt people hurt people. There is nothing wrong with you,” Erik said, putting his hand on my shoulder, “You deserve the world.”
“Those losers are the ones who are pathetic and miserable!” Matthew added.
“I oughta punch the guy in the nose.” Sam grumbled, and that made me smile a bit.
“Don’t listen to the negative thoughts in your head,” Damien told me, “This isn’t the end of your life. Soon enough, you’ll get over them and realize they were never worth it at all. Even if it doesn’t feel that way right now.” Damien scooped me up in a hug and the others followed his lead and started one big cuddle sesh.
There was a spark in my heart and I felt the hollowness go away slightly. I don’t know if they were enthralling me or what, but either way, their presence was definitely helping. They pulled away from the hug and a small smile formed on my face, “Thank you guys. So much,” I looked at each of them, “For being here with me even when I’m a mess.” I laughed slightly.
“We’ll always be here for ya, doofus. No matter what.” Sam said sincerely as he reached to ruffle my hair. James went on to massage my shoulders while Damien provided cuddles and Matthew fed me my favorite dessert. Sam got Erik to play against him on the game and to be honest, it did make me laugh seeing Erik being terrible at video games. Sam turned to look at me, “You ready to get in on this?”
“I’m sure you’ll have no problem beating me.” Erik laughed at himself.
I smiled, “Alright.” I grabbed the controller from Sam.
“Woo! You got this!” Matthew cheered me on.
The incubi spent the rest of the night by my side cheering me up. After a video game marathon, we got a bunch of snacks, loaded up with blankets and pillows, and built a big fort in the living room before turning on Disney movies.
“This is stupid,” Sam said to the tv as we were watching Disney’s Cinderella, “You’re saying no one else in that damn town has the same shoe size as her?”
“Sam, do you have to talk through the entire movie?” James sighed.
“I mean i’m just saying-“ Sam was cut off by Matthew hitting him with a pillow. Matthew laughed hysterically at Sam’s offended face. “Oh no you didn’t.” Sam said before grabbing a pillow and hurling it at Matthew. In the blink of an eye, the two got caught up on their impromptu pillow fight, tackling each other with their pillows.
“Guys come on.” Damien tried to interject. But the two weren’t listening as they got really into it. They were at least having fun, until Sam accidentally hit me in the face with his pillow. Everyone froze.
“Holy shit! Sorry!” Sam rushed to say. I paused for a moment, considering my attack. It wasn’t long before I quickly grabbed a pillow and hit Sam with enough force to knock him down. I laughed at everyone’s shocked faces.
“Yeah! Pillow fight!” Matthew shouted before practically jumping on Sam and attacking him with a pillow when his guard was down. Damien eventually joined in, followed by Erik even. I managed to step off to the side and sit with James as the rest of the boys went at it. I couldn’t help my laughter seeing them all being so playful with each other. I noticed in the corner of my eye James was smiling at me.
“What is it?” I asked, confused.
“I’m glad to see you’re smiling. I’ll take this as we were successful in making you feel better?” He asked hopefully. I didn’t realize the sinking feeling in my chest had gone. Just being around the boys and seeing them act like brothers was helpful. I giggled.
“Yeah, you guys are awesome.” I genuinely smiled. James leaned in and kissed my forehead, “That’s good. I am quite upset about the movie interruption though.” I chuckled as I had completely forgotten about the movie.
“They’ll tire out soon enough.” I leaned my head on his shoulder, relaxing into him. I was just now noticing how heavy my eyes felt. I feel comfortable. I feel safe surrounded by these boys even as they were beating each other with pillows. I feel so loved in this moment. Whatever else happened in the future, I knew I would have these guys by my side to help me through anything. And that thought comforted me as I drifted off to sleep.

Cat Ears – (Polly Brothers x Reader)

Warnings – Bullying, Strong language, verbal abuse, comfort, harassment
Word Count – 1060
I couldn’t stop staring at the screen. I couldn’t look away. My hands were gripping the case so hard it physically hurt. Not that I cared. My eyes were drawn to the blue words plastered across the screen.
“Delivered”
But they hadn’t been. I’ve been waiting all morning; all week actually. I practically exploded when I heard the doorbell. I flung my sheets over and my phone to the side, leaping out bed and tripping onto the floor. My bedroom door flung open as Erik rushed into the room. “Princess? Are you alright?!”
He stared at me as I scrambled to my feet. “The door!” I quickly dodge past him and run around the halls to the entrance passing Sam and Damien on the way. I ran down the stairs tripping on the last one but lunging for the door. I catch the handle and open it to see an amazon delivery guy on the porch.
I smile and blow my hair out my face, tucking it behind my ear as I catch my breath. “Hm sorry about that.” I laugh awkwardly gesturing to the house. “Big house.” The delivery guy raises his eyebrows as he stands back a bit. “Miss? I just rung the doorbell ten seconds ago…” I nod my head slightly. “Right…”
My heart skips a beat when he pulls a small parcel out from behind him. “You’re Y/N L/N, right?” I nod enthusiastically, signing his pad as quick as possible, snatching the box and taking it inside.
By this point all the boys had gathered in the lobby to see what was going on. James walked up to me putting a hand on my shoulder. “Miss, are you okay?” I nod, grinning entirely too wide. “It’s here!” I exclaim excitedly.
I rip the parcel open with child-like giddy excitement. My veins flooded with anticipation. I feel my heart melt when I finally see them. A silver pair of cat ears. The ears decorated with ornate silver details. I let out a small squeal as I pull them out the box.
“What are those Doofus?”
I look up to see the boys staring down at me with confused expressions. I giggle holding them out for the boys to see, to excited to speak. “Look!” Matthew’s face lights up, I’m not sure he understands but he looks excited regardless. He walks over to me. “Cool!”
I put them on and instantly fall in love. The boys look at me smiling, clearly seeing how happy they make me. Damien gives me an exaggerated thumbs up, grinning and Sam cheers. I swear I never want to take these off!
-------
I wore them all weekend, only taking them off for bed. Sam laughed when he saw I was wearing them in the bath but told me they looked great. When I say the insane amount of joy these ears have brought me, I mean it. I couldn’t wait to go to school and show them to Naomi and Suzu! I mean I sent them photos of them almost every hour but now they’d see them in person.
I walked into class with my backpack hung over my back, proudly sporting my ears. I walked over and sat at my desk pulling my phone out to text Suzu and Naomi and asking when they’d be here.
That’s when I heard it. The sniggering.
I turned around to see Lisette and her friends. I rolled my eyes. “What?” Lisette’s friend burst out laughing as soon as I spoke. “Jeez! Your voice sounds like a fucking cat’s too! Who would have guessed?!” Lisette’s friends all laugh at that. I lean back a bit in my chair, completely not expecting that.
Another one of Lisette’s friends starts talking. “We’re not in the second grade, you’d think people would grow out of shit like that.” Lisette sniggers under her breath clearly making a VERY poor attempt to stop her friends. “Now! Now! Guys. Come on! Let’s not be mean about this.” She turns to me with the ‘fakest bitch’ look I’ve ever seen. It’s impressive truly.
“Don’t you just… think their a bit um… childish?” I feel absolutely humiliated. Normally I would say something back but I just can’t find the words. I have absolutely no idea what to say. I just dip my head slowly and take them off shoving them in my school bag. I can feel the tears prick the corner of my eyes.
“HEY L/N!” I look up to see Suzu and Naomi walk in and quickly give them a smile. They walk up and sit in their seats. “So where are the ears?! I thought you would have had them on? I wanna see!” Suzu says dramatically, leaning over her chair. Naomi nods in agreement, turning to face my desk. I shrug a bit, trying desperately not to sob. “I didn’t feel like wearing them today.”
-------
When I get home, I’m greeted by Matthew and James in the lobby. “Hey Miss! How was scho- where did your cat ears go?” My shoulders slump as I try to shrug it off but burst into tears instead. Matthew immediately wraps me up in a hug and I sob into his shoulder. James walks up quickly and the commotion grabs Erik’s attention as well. I look up into Matthew’s worried face. “D-Did you think I looked stupid?”
Matthew shook his head firmly. “No, you looked really cute.” Erik and James join the hug and I feel so glad to have them there. I sniffle a bit trying to get my words out. “Lisette and her friends… were saying stuff.” James rests his cheek on the back of my head. “With all do respect Miss, those girls have no idea what they were talking about. They looked fantastic on you.”
I wipe my tears as the boys step back a bit. Erik reaches into my bag and grabs my ears. He lifts them up and put them on me. “See? Now you’re a real princess.” I sniffle and smile a bit, hugging him gently. “Thank you…”
Matthew takes my bag and jacket to hang up and James proposes we watch a movie until Sam and Damien get home. I nod and smile and the three of us settle down on the sofa, only after the boys make sure I have my ears on.
