Event Report: Rock and Shock 2018
Tumblr media
The Rock and Shock horror convention and concert series invaded the DCU Center and The Palladium in Worcester, MA last weekend, October 12-14. This year marked the 15th annual event, boasting a decade and a half of the biggest names in horror movies and alternative music descending upon New England every Halloween season.
I had the honor of hosting two panels on Friday night. The first featured New England Horror Writers members Jack Haringa, Rob Smales, Trisha Wooldridge, and Steve Van Samson. Their discussions of their writing careers, their approach, and their experiences with small press provided invaluable insight to the aspiring writers in the audience. For my second panel I was joined by Dawn of the Dead with stars Scott Reiniger and Gaylen Ross to celebrate the film's 40th anniversary. The old friends reflected on the landmark zombie movie and working with the late, great George A. Romero.
Tumblr media
Saturday kicked off with a panel with the charismatic Ted Raimi (Evil Dead II). He opened with what was essentially a 10-minute standup routine about the Worcester/Boston area before answering questions. Fittingly, he even received a special microphone so he could stand up to address the crowd rather than sit behind the table. The actor spoke highly of Deadwax, the Shudder original series on which he recently worked, stating that he didn't want it to end. He also revealed that Lunatics: A Love Story, the 1991 comedy/romance film in which he stars, is finally coming to DVD for the first time soon.
Raimi's panel was followed by an equally entertaining but entirely different session with author Joe Knetter. It was billed as a reading from I, Survivor, the new Victor Crowley tie-in novel that he co-wrote with filmmaker Adam Green, but he only read a brief passage. The rest of the time was filled by Knetter - who admitted he was “floating on an edible” - musing from collaborating with Green to playing the killer in the upcoming Hanukkah alongside horror icons Sid Haig, Caroline Williams, and P.J. Soles. His raunchy and self-deprecating humor extended to his longtime girlfriend, indie scream queen Sarah French, who watched from the audience. It was a unique and hilarious experience.
Tumblr media
Later in the day, Malcolm McDowell took the stage to answer fan questions. He discussed his seminal roles in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange and Rob Zombie's Halloween films. (After admitting that he his still never seen John Carpenter's original Halloween, a fan gifted him with a VHS copy the next day.) The gregarious Brit spoke about some of his less publicized performances as well, including the recent fun he had doing Lunchables commercials. "Thank God they paid me a shit load of money," he mused.
On Sunday, Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects), Andrew Divoff (Wishmaster),and R.A. Mihailoff (Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III) took over the panel room to discuss their legacies as icons of horror in a Q&A, which you can watch in its entirety here. Moseley was unfortunately unable to disclose any details on Rob Zombie’s Three From Hell, but it was a fun chat nonetheless. Divoff shared a particularly enlightening story about being an action figure.
Tumblr media
For various reasons, several beloved Rock and Shock traditions were absent this year: the costume contest, the film festival, and the supergroup cover band The Rocking Dead. I hope to see them all reinstated in the future, but Sunday saw the launch of a new favorite tradition: a children's costume contest, hosted by Fiona's Fright Shoppe. A gaggle of adorable children dressed as killers from movies they've (hopefully) never seen proudly showed off their cosplay. Chucky took home first prize, with Dani from Hocus Pocus and IT's Pennywise placing second and third, respectively. It was truly heartwarming.
Next door at The Palladium, concerts took place throughout the weekend, beginning with a sold-out kick-off show from Ice Nine Kills on Thursday. Horrorcore hip-hop duo Twiztid headlined on Friday. Saturday offered a night of Swedish/Finnish metal featuring Amorphis, Dark Tranquility, and Wintersun. Two different shows took place on Sunday: downstairs was headlined by heavy metal titans Trivium, while hardcore stalwarts Terror brought the mosh upstairs.
Tumblr media
In addition to the aforementioned names, other celebrity guests who met with fans throughout the weekend included Linda Blair (The Exorcist), making her Rock and Shock debut, along with Derek Mears (Friday the 13th), James Marshall (Twin Peaks), Dana Ashbrook (Twin Peaks), Jeremy Davies (Justified), William Forsythe (The Devil's Rejects), and Kelli Maroney (Chopping Mall), among others.
Per usual, the vendor room was loaded with horror DVDs, Blu-rays, toys, shirts, collectibles, artwork, handmade goods, tattoo artists, and more, but it was laid out differently this year. The floor space itself was smaller, but the configuration of the booths made it feel just as full. In addition the regulars, I was happy to find quite a few new faces and products among the vendors. I hope to see the Rock and Shock family to continue to grow in future years.

Crazy Trailer For The Twisted Animated Horror Movie TO YOUR LAST DEATH with Morena Baccarin and William Shatner
Tumblr media
"Hell is empty… And the devils are here."
I’ve got a wild trailer here for a twisted, and demented-looking animated horror film titled To Your Last Death. The animation style is filled with some crazy trippy and vivid visuals and is reminiscent of FX’s Archer. It also has a solid voice cast that includes Dani Lennon, Morena Baccarin, Ray Wise, Bill Moseley, Florence Hartigan, Damien C. Haas, and William Shatner.
Here’s the synopsis for the film:
After emerging as the sole survivor in a deadly revenge game set up by her father to punish his children, Miriam receives an offer from a supernatural entity to go back in time and try again. Now, Miriam must survive both her father’s blood lust and the Gamemaster’s ever-changing rules to save her siblings as she relives the worst night of her life.
I’m not really sold on the film, but maybe some of you might like what you see in the trailer and will give it a chance. To Your Last Death is direct-to-VOD starting on March 17th, 2020.

A positive path

Lewisham Youth Theatre is a lifeline for young people in the borough – but as funding cuts continue, it needs more support
WORDS BY DANI MOSELEY
Theatre can help tackle knife crime. You might doubt me – but hear me out. According to the Evening Standard, 40 knife offences are reported to the police every day. But all we hear about is the need for more police on the streets; the need to contain the problems we face; the gangs these young people must have been part of for it to happen to them.
Well, I’m here to tell you a different story. I’m an actress and writer – that’s my job. Being part of Lewisham Youth Theatre (LYT) as a teenager and now as a trustee has shown me another way. I’m not talking West End glamour here – I’m talking Catford, south-east London, and working with budgets that seem to get tighter by the project.
Every year more than 700 kids from Lewisham borough come through our doors. Over 70% are from deprived backgrounds. Some have mental health conditions, some have been excluded from school, some have just lost their way. Come what may, we take them in. LYT is free and all we ask for is commitment and respect.
Life as a teenager can be hard. I always hear people say, “Kids should be at home, not on the streets” – but maybe that’s easier if your parents have a big house or can pay for you to go to nice after-school clubs. At LYT kids know they are safe, they know they are valued. They know we believe in them and that goes a long way.
Drama can be transformative. It’s about being in a place where you feel you belong – a “safe haven”, as some of the kids call it – where you can be yourself and try new things without fear.
I’ve seen loud and disruptive kids become thoughtful; quiet kids find their voice; and teenagers struggling with self-worth find their inner value, all through creating and playing different characters and working together on a piece of theatre.
I was born and raised in the heart of Catford. From the age of eight I already knew I wanted to be a world-renowned actress. But before I’d even hit my teenage years I had accepted that this was a pipe dream.
Growing up in the borough of Lewisham was always eventful and more times than not, in a negative way. McDonald’s in Lewisham was always the hangout spot, for the person you fancied or the school rival you wanted to settle the score with.
Your day would start off happy, safe and family or community orientated, but you knew, no matter what the security checks or police presence, that by a certain time you’d need to leave because something was always guaranteed to kick off.
There weren’t any youth clubs I can think of, but there were dance, drama and sports clubs in and around the area. These were great because it would allow young people from different schools to mix and get to know each other.
This would create a connection and then when it came to school rivalry, sometimes it could be easily diffused because it would be like, “Nah, I know him, I did dance with him a couple of months back, he’s cool.”
But these were four-week programmes, which, although effective, were only short-lived. LYT is a pillar, because it has been running consistently for more than 30 years, changing the lives of young people for the better.
When I was 14, Helen Stanley from LYT came to my secondary school and did a drama workshop. She let us know that if we had enjoyed it, we could explore acting further by joining LYT. I was there.
My first production through LYT was a National Youth Theatre “connections” festival, in which I played a captain at war. I marvelled at how professional yet nurturing the company and its directors were.
I had already accepted that I was never going to drama school and would never be on a TV or film set. I was resigned to this being as close as I would get. But LYT kept the dream alive for me, pushing me and others to be more and do better.
They took us to theatres we couldn’t afford to go to, allowed us to explore devised and scripted work, gave us bigger roles so we stepped up and supported those who struggled to read or weren’t fully confident yet. How many organisations do this in our borough for free? Other than chicken shops and fast food restaurants, where can young people with little money go to hang out?
LYT helped me hone my craft and build my confidence and compassion. I met so many different people, with different needs and backgrounds. As I grew up through LYT, my ability and belief in myself as a creative grew and I watched others experience the same.
Not everyone who attends LYT wants to be an actor – some have gone on to work as stage managers, IT consultants, teachers and more. Others who previously might have struggled to find work are now in employment.
As for me, I’ve been in TV shows on Sky and the BBC, modelled for MAC and won a script-writing award with Channel 4 and the British Urban Film Festival for a co-written feature film.
I do voiceovers for commercials and radio and facilitate workshops in schools around social-based issues. It’s a far cry from the nine-to-five office job that was expected of me.
Organisations like LYT are not the entire solution to keeping young people off the streets, but they are a major tool in getting them motivated and thinking more positively and productively about life and their place in the community.
You get to play different characters, putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, so you can see people differently and gain a better understanding of why people do the things they do. Growing up, where else truly allows you to explore this for free outside of school?
LYT believes so much in the voice of its young people that it created a young members’ committee, where young people get to have a say in new projects and help run events throughout the year.
Recently our young people have been sharing their experiences with representatives from the mayor’s team at City Hall, where more connections were made as funding cuts continue to rise.
The GLA understands why places like LYT are vital to tackling the violence on our streets – and it’s time that central government starts to listen to these young voices too.
If we do not see more support for services like ours then we really will be failing a generation. When we invest in our future by investing in our young people, that’s when we’ll see change.
Children in Lewisham – and London as a whole – are amazing. Every time I work with them as a writer, director or mentor I feel inspired. Give them the space to find their voice, a place to articulate their dreams, a platform for the future and they will surprise us all.

Do you have what it takes to be Florida’s Next Model? I am sure you’ll are very familiar with the hit show Americas Next Top Model but the plot has twisted. Florida’s Next Top Model is founded by Leamber Stephens. Leamber started Florida’s Next Top Model because she wanted to create and event that gave models exposure. Stephens stated that over the years of growing in her business, she notice the lack of opportunity and growth for models .Therefore, her purpose is to instill confidence in each model as well as push them to go higher. F.N.T.M is a competition that challenges each model to be their best and go higher than the norm. A group of models competed over a course of 24 weeks. On July 15, 2017, 10 models battled it out in hopes of becoming Florida’s Next Top Model. Check them out below:
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Top 10 Models: Audre’Ana, Tabresha, Kayla Moseley, Shayla, Dani Bee, Keaunnie Bryant, Shah Paulhill, Kiana lly, Kia Jones and Tylar Glover.
Over the course of time they endured different challenges; such as, the myth challenge, best European runway, Art walk challenge, photo shoot challenge, and a commercial challenge. The myth challenged the models to stand out in a crowd of people. This challenge was inside a night club and the models had to stand out in the crowd. Now don’t take my word for it but I am sure this taught them how to own a room with a crowd of people. The winner of the myth challenge won the back cover of Chicago Magazine. The next challenge that the models were rewarded was the art walk challenge. Each model had to collect emails for marketing the finale of the show. The model who collected the most emails won a $60.00 Macy’s gift card.
On July 15th at the aloft hotel, the models battled it out; each model strutted it out and at the end of the show I was clutching my invisible pearls. When I first arrived to the aloft hotel, I was greeted by the hostess and then taken to my seat. The event was decorated very nice and it was a sold out show. Literally, people were searching for seats and standing behind me. The host of the event was comedian Nod Ross, and model Ebony Murray.
One of the most funniest parts in the show is when Nod Ross kicked off an strut completion. This allowed the audience to participate for a chance to win a twenty dollar gift card. Nod Ross told one of the contestant who was an older woman that he wasn’t wearing any socks with his slip on’s; In response, she stated that she wasn’t wearing any draws. LMBO, older women have so much spunk and could careless what anyone’s think! I love it!
Each model strutted and walked to an short bio of themselves which stated why they should be F.N.T.M.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
After this 5 models were eliminated.  The crowd and the models were shocked but it proved that they weren’t going based off popularity but who owned the runway. These models rocked different designers on the runway. The designers were Shamara Sloan, William Boston, Rex- D, Lunt Clothing Wear and Keenan Solomon.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Each model was judged on their runway walk, poses and ability to own the crowd.  Once the show resumed 2 more models were cut and that left Tabresha, Kiana, and Kayla in the competition. The last three models battle it out in hopes of becoming F.N.T.M. This was one of the hardest decisions that the judges had to make. Before, I get into the final details, I would like you to virtually meet the judges.
Kent Williams,Steve Fntm 2016, Leamber, Serina FNTM 2016, Mikecia, Shante Armstrong not pictured
Picking a winner was a hard decision and right before Stephens announced the winner, She said ” I can’t do it.” Her team deliberated and came back with a runner up. The runner up for F.N.T.M is Kiana.
Tabresha was extremely graceful throughout the entire show. She kept her poised and most importantly she worked the runway. Tabresha won a $1,000, a trip to N.Y.F.W and a meeting with BMG modeling agency. All the ladies in this competition did and excellent job! It takes a lot to go after something that you want; especially, in a room full of strangers that will judge you based of your walk and appearance. So with that being said Great Job!
