According to Lin Yu-tang, both Po Chu-i and Su Tung-po ‘desperately admired’ Tao Yuan-ming, a poet of nature who wrote a single love poem, a poem thought by Chinese dilettantes to be the one ‘blemish in a white jade’. Can a poet be faulted for calling a woman carelessly perfect in beauty? He chose to long for her by envying the candle that glowed upon her beautiful face, the shadow that followed in her every move. Yet the nature poet Tao Yuan-ming, at home with the sudden turning of seasons, now feared the shadow in darkness, a discarded fan that once stirred her hair, feared the candle at dawn. At last believed that for beauty he had lived in vain.

'...Joining Andrew Scott, Brendan Fraser and Kerry Condon in the blue chip cast are Chris Messina (Sharp Objects) as U.S. meteorologist Irving P. Krick and Golden Globe and Emmy winner Damian Lewis (Billions) as legendary British Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery.
The true story will see All of Us Strangers and Ripley star Scott play Britain’s Chief Meteorological Officer James Stagg, whose job it was to inform Supreme Allied Commander Dwight Eisenhower (Fraser) of weather conditions that would make or break their Normandy invasion. The complex decision-making was critical in the fate of WWII and the course of history...
The synopsis reads: “In the seventy two hours leading up to D-Day, all the pieces are in place except for one key element – the British weather. Britain’s chief meteorological officer James Stagg (Andrew Scott) is called upon to deliver the most consequential forecast in history, locking him into a tense standoff with the entire Allied leadership. The wrong conditions could devastate the largest ever seaborne invasion, while any delay risks German intelligence catching on.
“With only his trusted aide Captain Kay Summersby (Kerry Condon) to confide in, and haunted by a catastrophic D-Day rehearsal, the final decision rests with Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower (Fraser). With only hours to go, the fate of the war and the lives of millions hang in the balance.”
HODs include DP Jamie Ramsey (All Of Us Strangers), production designer Daniel Taylor (True Detective), costume designer Liza Bracey (We Live In Time) and casting by Lucy Bevan (Masters Of Air). Studiocanal is handling worldwide sales.
Ron Halpern and Joe Naftalin will oversee for Studiocanal with Anna Marsh, Ron Halpern and Joe Naftalin aboard as executive producers.
Studiocanal CEO Anna Marsh, EVP Production Ron Halpern and SVP Global Production Joe Naftalin commented: “We are thrilled to have reunited with our long term partners at Working Title, and to be working with our brilliant filmmaker Anthony Maras on this special production. Anthony has assembled a world class array of talent, and the nail-biting true story of the last minute decision-making involved in D-Day is urgent and extraordinary. We can’t wait to share Anthony’s bold and exciting cinematic vision with audiences around the world next year.”...'

For the love of story
For the love of story
Photo by 🇸🇮 Janko Ferlič on Unsplash Over the holidays, I posted about what I was reading, particularly regarding a short story by Heinrich Böll, one of Germany’s greatest post World War literary authors. Today, I am looking back on a short story collection I picked up in a wonderful used bookstore when I lived in a different part of town. The collection is called The Art of the Tale: An…

Quote
Paul [Bowles] was a great collector of aromatic oils, which he had gathered from his travels — patchouli from Penang, vetiver from Indian root grass, sandalwood from Bangkok, perfumes from Paris circa 1940, Berlin after-shave from the 30's. He would dip a stick of bland-scented incense into the neck of a bottle of oil, light it — the scent exploding from the heat — and then we'd discuss what issued forth, as we'd discuss the book or piece of music he'd give me before I took my leave each evening. Paul was a man indifferent to the world at large but addicted to its sensory details.

did tamsyn muir ever read the immortals by martin amis? it's a short story about an immortal man (he claims he landed in africa before it was africa, that is, before it was separate from the rest of the continents because pangea was a thing) who survives (among other things) a nuclear bomb and reflects on the idea that he may well survive humanity and be the only one to remember shakespeare and so on. it's eerily reminiscent of john gaius. stories about immortals obviously aren't a totally original concept, but he says that sometimes, he has the "weird idea that (he is) just a second-rate new zealand schoolmaster who never did anything or went anywhere and is now painfully and noisily dying along with everyone else." plenty of the description calls to mind the locked tomb's writing style, especially the paragraph describing the explosion and the last couple of paragraphs. idk if it's available to read online but I strongly recommend locked tomb fans who are interested in literature read it.
#it does suffer from 'male author' but its pretty interesting#it was in my textbook from my short story class#the art of the story edited by daniel halpern#i strongly recommend it in general. there are some cool stories#tamsyn muir#the locked tomb#literary allusions#allusion#referential#analysis#meta#john gaius#nona the ninth spoilers#gideon the ninth#harrow the ninth#nona the ninth#alecto the ninth#idk what else to tag this to get the right people seeing it#i feel like someone who has done a deeper dive than i have would be able to make more sense of it#maybe this is foreshadowing? maybe its coincidence? idk but its cool#it even describes something as oil black and crackling with cancer#i love how deeply strange short stories can be
