8/6/24.
Ah, "literate pop" - I hate the label, but I love the sounds. Kiran Leonard (England) was in his late teens when he released "Bowler Hat Soup". He has cited Richard Dawson and Kate Bush as inspirations. I can hear both of those influences in this release. Apparently, these LPs were "found" in an attic in Bishop's Stortford.
I can also hear Sufjan Stevens, Danielson and Black Country, New Road. I would add a slew of other singer-songwriters, but "Bowler Hat Soup" tends to the more intense, and at times experimental, side of pop.
This was released by Hand of Glory. Leonard's later work has been released by Moshi Moshi.

Danielson, the Handler
Meet first name [REDACTED], last name Danielson, the handler of the great Agent Ella Jacks herself. Put together, smart, a little old school. But who is he, really? At this point, not even Ella really knows.
But it won't stay like that forever - will it?

11/11/23.
Another day, another amazing release. Frog's S/T release must have escaped a lot of people, because there are still 5 CDs left from the original pressing. Frog are a New York, New York band and this CD was originally issued on Monkfish Records and now is being handled by Frog's new label, Audio Antihero.
Listening to "Jesus Song" and "Rubbernecking" made me think of what Pavement might have sounded like if they were weirder. I mean this is definitely indie rock, but sometimes this has a country feel, and at other times it rocks hard but without a typical song structure to keep you knowing what's coming next.
This also recalls Chronophage, Danielson, Pere Ubu and maybe Meat Puppets. One more...the vocals remind me of Jason Cassidy's work in The Party and Viking Skate Country. You can kind of tell I'm all over the place. Listen to this.
