1925 - André Gratia, of ULB, University Libre Brussels & Pasteur Institute, along with Paul de Kruif, of New York Rockefeller Institute, together publish that bacteriophages, phages, are viruses, proven with experiment. Phages affect bacteria. Twort &d'Herelle substances are the same.
At first Gratia had concurred with Jules Bordet’s, Nobel Prize winner, who was his boss and supervisor, concept that a bacteriophage might be a sort of external ‘fermentation’ as the recorded Glasgow 1922 meeting communications show. However, Gratia eventually modified his interpretation and came to defend the theory that bacteriophages are external infecting particles, viruses, causing diseases in susceptible bacteria.

Crossing the road on a busy curve... not a good idea Mrs. Turtle!
Sports teams named after turtles proudly give back to their namesakes and brands by funding turtle crossing safety and their survival to Win the Game of Earth. Go Maryland Terrapins! Go ladies! ""Female sea turtles migrate longer distances than males, particularly during nesting season, where they travel thousands of miles to return to their natal beaches to lay eggs. While males also migrate, their journeys are often shorter and may be focused on finding mating opportunities.""

Volume 1 … Siege of Budapest Winter 1944-1945 p.89 The Attack Escalates Toward the middle of January the attack on Budapest escalated. The rolling sound of artillery fire increased as it approached. Clearly, the strategy was to occupy Pest first, and let Buda bleed to its end… The Splendid Bridges over the Danube are Falling… The Final Phase — de profundis clamo, from the depth I cry out… Resistance until death… Ruins, Desolation, Peril… The Ghastly remains of the Battle… Burying the Dead — woe to the vanquished…
I do not know the final outcome of this incident, but at some point the shots from the cellar ceased.  Everything grew silent.  It looked as though the Germans had opted for resistance until death…
RUINS, DESOLATION, PERIL
The Ghastly remains of the Battle
The sight of the abandoned battlefield was devastating.  The dead soldiers, young men destroyed in the blossom of life were strewn miserably around.  Homes were in ruins.  The earth was scarred with bomb craters and shells.  There were starving and dead horses and wrecked vehicles scattered here and there.  A T50 Soviet tank was turned on its side in a tank trap hole.  Where to start with the clean up?  Who is in charge in such situation?   Obviously we could not wait but had to dispose of the remains of the dead as quickly as possible.
During the last afternoon of the fighting a Hungarian soldier was brought to our house bleeding from a wound in his thigh… his wound started to swell and smell… and he grew weaker…
Burrying the Dead   victims,  woe to the vanquished -
Many dead were left behind on the battle field.  Germans, typically in defensive retracted postures.  Russians, many of them, doped, dashing to victory and death, lying face down on the open ground.  Civilians shot in the back.  A human brain smashed and smeared on a wall, its headless body stretched out on the floor…   Our task was macabre…  we were hungry and exhausted…

Belgium ~1948. Memoirs - Volume 2: “ In Search of Existence”. p.18
“As my hopes of getting an engineering job with firms in the business faded, I turned instinctively to the Universities. I still felt the need to learn and complement my wartime professional education. I knocked on the door of old Professor Baes, the well-respected expert in structural engineering at the Free University of Brussels. I enrolled in Baes courses, and he gave me a small research task without pay. Thus, my foot was in the door.
I heard about Professor Magnel, who was teaching at the University of Gand. Magnel was known as the “Pope of reinforced concrete” in Belgium. He had published a set of very useful books on the subject which provided answers to all the questions and engineer could encounter in practice. His books were the Bible of the practitioner.
I made an appointment with professor Magnel and visited him. It was an enlightening experience. As a beginner. I asked for his counsel on an engineering career and always remember his sensible answer, he advised me to choose and to apply ONE method of structural analysis from among the many and to know that method in depth. This was his secret, and he was right. He gave me as a gift one of his books on pre-stressed concrete, which I still have. The deadline to go to the coal mines was dangerously closing in, and… Construction of the National Bank de Belgique…. …. Congo bridges … USA World Bank West Africa ….

Bacteria Beware -- Belgium's Bacteriocins will be back.
Good bacteria -- Be at ease.
AS2AMR & BIC2025
25 - 28 May, 2025   Dear Colleague, We are excited to announce the upcoming conference “One Health in Focus: Advancing Solutions to Antimicrobial Resistance” (AS2AMR), co-organized with the “BIC2025". This event will take place from May 25 to 28, 2025, at the historic Palace of the Academies in Brussels, Belgium.

Organized by the National Committee for Microbiology (NaCoMi) of the Royal Academies for Science and the Arts of Belgium, in collaboration with the Belgian Society for Microbiology (BSM), this conference will commemorate the 100th anniversary of bacteriocin discovery by the Belgian researcher Prof. André Gratia.

The event will focus on:  Tackling Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) from a One Health perspective (human medicine & animal health; food safety; plant - & environmental health). Exploring data science, regulations, and policies. Highlighting novel technologies and advancements in combating AMR. We are thrilled to invite you to join this interdisciplinary event featuring academics, industry leaders, and policymakers, while celebrating the benchmark excellence of Belgian Microbiologists, on a global stage. On behalf of the AS2AMR & BIC2025 Organizing Committee GRATIA’S MICROBIOLOGY, VIROLOGY, CELLULAR LABORATORY TECHNIQUES
1) Microbial agar technique —Suspend bacteria 107-108  in an 0.7 percent agar-agar solution to demonstrate antibiotic or bacteriolytic properties of substances produced by colonies of bacteria or molds — reported to Selman Waksman, actinomycetes specialist and discoverer of several bacteria-produced antibiotics, by Maurice Welsch staying in the USA.
2) Cellophane sheet procedure — Affix a cellophane sheet to the microbial agar containing a sensitive germ and seeded with a culture of an antibiotic germ to assess the degree of diffusion by the pores of the cellophane of the substances studied.
3) Double layer technique for the titration of bacteriophages —Used by all bacteriophage specialists since its publication in 1936.
4) Inhibition binding of a bacteriophage to membrane receptors —  By the specific antiserum of the phage studied —in collaboration with Willy Mutsaars.
5) Ultracentrifugation using compressed air — Shows the efficient demarcation between virus particles and protein molecules using the famous Hendriot and Huguenard compressed air ultracentrifugue.  Please note that ultracentrifugation uses far more G force than the human body can stand, 2 to 5 g.     6) Fractional centrifugation — before its application by other biologists, including Albert Claude.  Fill Ebonite tubes with a suspension of virus or protein substances which after centrifugation are frozen and cut into slices whose content is titrated after thawing.  The technique shows the differences in sedimentation of the centrifuged elements.
7) Replicas — Affix a piece of sterile cloth to a round wooden block, which is applied to a Petri dish containing bacteriophage plaques. Replicate on a soft agar dish containing specific phage-sensitive bacteria.  This ensures the large-scale development of phage particles. Collect and centrifuge the agar where the phage grew. The resulting phage particle titer is surprisingly high.  Twenty years later J. Lederberg created a related replication technique for colonies of bacteria on different media, which is used commonly in bacterial genetics.
8) Electron microscopy to identify staphylophages — Gratia does not receive credit for this, due to the Second World War. His electron microscope was taken by the Americans in 1945. German researcher Ruska took pictures of his Staphylophage
