A to Z meme - SSSSSSSS.

Okay, S - a series I've started and need to finish. Definitively A Song of Ice and Fire. I've read the first two, which I loved, but as they're really long and quite bloody, I don't want to read them all at once. I've got the third volume on my to read-shelf. 

I really enjoy savouring book series, though. If I discover a really good one when there are a few books, I will sometimes save the ones I haven't read yet for when I really need them. That is what I'm doing with Louis McMaster Bujord's Vorkosigan Saga (I love it sooo much), the Dandy Gilver books by Catriona McPherson (which are brilliant - Scotland and 1920s and tweed and an awesome lady sleuth) as well as Dorothy Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey books (which are just great - 20s and 30s too, and tweed, but a gentleman sleuth). To be honest, though, I've felt increasingly uninterested in book series. I like when a story can be told within one volume. Naturally, there are lots of good book series, but it's a bit annoying to realise that a book you've been reading is just the beginning of the series (which happened with A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness, which wasn't the world's best book, but which I was curious to see how it ended... and it's the first of three or something.) I suppose I want to know what I'm getting myself into.

Edit (because I forgot) - Another natural answer to this question is of course, the Eighth Doctor Adventures. I love being in the process of reading them, and I've only read about half, but I'm looking forward to when I've read them all.

IT'S TRUE THOUGH. I have been reading a lot of smutty books lately and I am finding a LOT of sad earls with tortured pasts or dukes who had titles unceremoniously thrust upon them and are thus brooding about all their wealth and power.

I definitely have a love/hate relationship with romance bc a lot of the tropes are boring/asinine/outright problematic -- a skilled writer will allow me to overlook that with a minimum amount of eye-rolling, although said eyes will roll pretty much every time regardless. a lot of the writers I read or have read incorporate a lot of sass and snark, which also helps make things a bit more bearable, but sometimes I want to save the women from these sulking aristocrats. I just need more variety in my porn, dammit.
