If it gets worse, you're not imagining it. Retaliation is common. It’s also illegal.

Don’t quit just to make it stop. Not before you talk to someone. A lawyer. A hotline. A friend who’s been there.

Crying in the bathroom is not unprofessional. Neither is dissociating. Nor surviving.

It’s okay to stay. It’s okay to leave. Either way, you’re strong.

What happened to you matters. Even if you stayed quiet. Even if you laughed. Even if you stayed quiet for a long, long, time.

January Hobby Recap Part 1

As I mentioned previously, I am working to spend more time on my hobbies and tracking that data. Here are the results of my first full month of data tracking.

Exercise - This is the one thing on the list that isn’t a hobby, but I am trying to make it become one. I had a great streak going there until I forgot one day.

Forestry - I bought native plants twice and removed Invasives seven times. Mostly Himalayan blackberry, a little bit of yellow archangel and English ivy. Kind of fell off a bit once we got freezing temps.

Learn Dutch - I was very successful at keeping this up daily. The amounts of time spent were variable. This was listening to a Dutch podcast nineteen times (shoutout to Een Beetje Nederlands), studying from my Dutch Reader twelve times, listening to Dutch music three times, watching a children’s show in Dutch two times, intentional speaking practice one time, and a movie in Dutch one time.

Look at birds - Currently it is often too dark for birds by the time I get home for work, but I was able to at least see some cool birds while commuting most days. There were a few days I missed because it was too dark on my commutes to and from work. I did make one dedicated trip to look for bald eagles.

Look at trees - This one was pretty easy for me to achieve daily because it can be done while driving and even in the dark. I was most excited about the appearance of hazelnut catkins and watching a snag in my driveway get demolished by a woodpecker.

Play a video game - Even though this was one of my lower ones, this was a hobby I was “stuck” on and hadn’t participated in for months before starting this data tracking. This is a huge improvement. This was nine days of playing Kingdom Hearts and four Pokémon Go outings.

The Twitter number conflicts with Statista’s estimated number of 0.3 B and dropping, with only 40% of users “extremely likely” to still be on the platform in a year. One may be reporting accounts that are not deactivated (thus active), and another the accounts that have been used in the past month— or perhaps both are using different time frames. Regardless:

February Hobby Recap

Oops, I accidentally procrastinated posting this for an entire month 🤫 I did do my hobbies in February tho

February Stats

Most Improved: Watching Soccer. Increased from 0 to 8. The season still hasn’t started, so honestly this much improvement is impressive.

Biggest Regression: Watching tv. I finished Pokemon Johto, and never got into the rhythm of watching something else.

Completed Every Day: Exercise, Learn Dutch, Look at Trees, Read, Study Ecology, Walk

Biggest Struggle: Foresty. The freezing weather and lack of light after work conspired against me in February

Exercise - Who knew you could gaslight yourself into making exercise a hobby. This has been amazingly successful. I got 22 zone minutes every day in February except the first.

Forestry - As mentioned above the freezing temperatures and lack of light in February made forestry difficult. I did some surveying one day and removed invasives another.

Learn Dutch - I listened to the Dutch podcast Een Beetje Nederlands 19 times, completed exercises from my Dutch reader 6 times, listened to Dutch music 4 times, and watched Mickey Mouse Clubhouse in Dutch 1 time. Unfortunately I finished Een Beetje Nederlands and haven’t found a replacement yet. Let me know if you know of any good podcasts for learning Dutch!

Look at Birds - I was able to do this almost every day thanks to birding while driving.

Look at trees - and this is why I need to stop procrastinating because I can’t really remember the details beyond yes, I did this 🥲

Play a video game - I still haven’t really gotten a rhythm going with this one. I did play Kingdom Hearts one time and went on 6 Pokemon Go outings.

Puzzles - This month my puzzles were mostly crosswords from my local paper. They are good difficulty level for me, challenging but not so much that I can’t complete them.

Read - I completed four books during February. The River That Made Seattle was a very interesting ecological history of the Duwamish River. I joined a book club in February, and we read Parable of the Sower and Erasing History.

Study ecology - I spent 23 days reading Braiding Sweetgrass. I watched three webinars including one on pacific herring, one on the ecological history of my county, and one on restoring the Salish Sea. At the end of the month, I started reading All we Can Save.

Support local - This month I supported two different local burger chains, two different local pet stores, a local coffee shop, a local bbq, a local taco place, a local food co-op, a local non-profit, and purchased some books through bookshop.org

Train dogs - I am still kind of goal-less in this area which affects my motivation. I started to get a routine down at the end of the month of doing some conditioning training with Breezy while my husband feeds the dogs. I did conditioning with Breezy 13 times, nosework with all the dogs twice, and conditioning with Atari once.

Walk - I got 10,000 steps every day this month except the first! Very successful here. Lost of walking indoors around my dining table since it was still too dark after work.

Watch a tv show - I watched Pokemon Johto 14 times (and then ran out of episodes 🥲), Mickey Mouse Club House 1 time, Digimon 1 time, Renegade Nell 1 time, and Danny Phantom 1 time

Watch Soccer - The NWSL season still hasn’t started, but there was some soccer to watch this month! I watched six international games from the She Believes Cup and two pre-season NWSL games from Coachella Valley.

Now I need to make another post for March 😮‍💨
