Sometimes I wonder what my life would be like if I didn't switch out of engineering after my freshman year of college. I could've been a computer & electrical engineer.
Or if I'd pursued my middle school interest in architecture (that I still lowkey have). I used to draw floor plans just for the fun of it. I think it might've originated from building in the sims, bc I recently did a massive build in the sims 2 after years and years without playing, and I was having the time of my Life. I ended up deciding to pursue engineering in high school tho bc there's a family history to it (my grandpa was one, my sister is one, my dad studied it before dropping out of college, & my ex step grandpa was one too). Also it pays better lol.
But what if I didn't give it up? I could've been an architect. Just the other day I found out from European friends that their buildings don't tend to have ventilation systems built into the walls & I went on a whole nerd research binge learning about how European buildings have air circulation (it generally varies by region, colder climates often having ventilation systems while warmer climates often just get air circulation from windows). Yeah, the architecture interest is still there.
If I go Real far back, little me wanted to be a nurse lol. But that was just because my mom was one and I still looked up to her. I've long since accepted I wouldn't be able to make it as a nurse (I'm too squeamish + tend to get attached easily, so i think it'd be pretty soul crushing for me to work in a job where patients do die sometimes)
Idk. I'm close to finishing my degree in IT, so my general life path is pretty set. And it just has me wondering about the different jobs I've wanted throughout my life & what things would be like if I went to that instead.
#speculation nation#theres also the computer science thing but that dream died as soon as i took the intro class lol. IT is just better for me.#anyways this isnt me regretting my choices. i think IT major with a communication minor is a solid choice.#should give me plenty of job opportunities. and it's something i find at least passively enjoyable.#(i dont enjoy work. but theres work that feels ok to do and work that feels like nails on chalkboard. i found smth that's okay for me to do)#it's just like. i know im ALSO not nailed down in this for life. if i truly end up wanting to change i could eventually go back to school.#but at least for now. i need to settle down. get a job. get money. achieve stability. and this is the most direct path to accomplish it.#i think i couldve been a good engineer. i heard it also got better after the first year. i HATED first year engineering#but it was a drop-out year. weeding out the 'weak'. you know. ultimately tho i just did not like it. and so im not an engineer.#honestly i think i'd still enjoy being an architect. but from what i can see online the median salary is about $82k#which is certainly not NOTHING. but median IT salary is about $104k#certainly wont make that just starting out. but i could make it someday. and that $20k more sounds Pretty alluring...#plus also the variability in the job market. *every* company needs an IT department.#my data governance professor recently said that we in IT are the heart of the company. the company cannot run without us.#so maybe it's not as cool of work as being an engineer. and maybe it's not as personally interesting as being an architect.#but i do like the field that i chose. and i hope to have a good and successful career in it.#just gotta finish school first lol

New major crosses disciplines to address climate change
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/new-major-crosses-disciplines-to-address-climate-change/
New major crosses disciplines to address climate change
Lauren Aguilar knew she wanted to study energy systems at MIT, but before Course 1-12 (Climate System Science and Engineering) became a new undergraduate major, she didn’t see an obvious path to study the systems aspects of energy, policy, and climate associated with the energy transition.
Aguilar was drawn to the new major that was jointly launched by the departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) in 2023. She could take engineering systems classes and gain knowledge in climate.
“Having climate knowledge enriches my understanding of how to build reliable and resilient energy systems for climate change mitigation. Understanding upon what scale we can forecast and predict climate change is crucial to build the appropriate level of energy infrastructure,” says Aguilar.
The interdisciplinary structure of the 1-12 major has students engaging with and learning from professors in different disciplines across the Institute. The blended major was designed to provide a foundational understanding of the Earth system and engineering principles — as well as an understanding of human and institutional behavior as it relates to the climate challenge. Students learn the fundamental sciences through subjects like an atmospheric chemistry class focused on the global carbon cycle or a physics class on low-carbon energy systems. The major also covers topics in data science and machine learning as they relate to forecasting climate risks and building resilience, in addition to policy, economics, and environmental justice studies.
Junior Ananda Figueiredo was one of the first students to declare the 1-12 major. Her decision to change majors stemmed from a motivation to improve people’s lives, especially when it comes to equality. “I like to look at things from a systems perspective, and climate change is such a complicated issue connected to many different pieces of our society,” says Figueiredo.
A multifaceted field of study
The 1-12 major prepares students with the necessary foundational expertise across disciplines to confront climate change. Andrew Babbin, an academic advisor in the new degree program and the Cecil and Ida Green Career Development Associate Professor in EAPS, says the new major harnesses rigorous training encompassing science, engineering, and policy to design and execute a way forward for society.
Within its first year, Course 1-12 has attracted students with a diverse set of interests, ranging from machine learning for sustainability to nature-based solutions for carbon management to developing the next renewable energy technology and integrating it into the power system.
Academic advisor Michael Howland, the Esther and Harold E. Edgerton Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, says the best part of this degree is the students, and the enthusiasm and optimism they bring to the climate challenge.
“We have students seeking to impact policy and students double-majoring in computer science. For this generation, climate change is a challenge for today, not for the future. Their actions inside and outside the classroom speak to the urgency of the challenge and the promise that we can solve it,” Howland says.
The degree program also leaves plenty of space for students to develop and follow their interests. Sophomore Katherine Kempff began this spring semester as a 1-12 major interested in sustainability and renewable energy. Kempff was worried she wouldn’t be able to finish 1-12 once she made the switch to a different set of classes, but Howland assured her there would be no problems, based on the structure of 1-12.
“I really like how flexible 1-12 is. There’s a lot of classes that satisfy the requirements, and you are not pigeonholed. I feel like I’m going to be able to do what I’m interested in, rather than just following a set path of a major,” says Kempff.
Kempff is leveraging her skills she developed this semester and exploring different career interests. She is interviewing for sustainability and energy-sector internships in Boston and MIT this summer, and is particularly interested in assisting MIT in meeting its new sustainability goals.
Engineering a sustainable future
The new major dovetail’s MIT’s commitment to address climate change with its steps in prioritizing and enhancing climate education. As the Institute continues making strides to accelerate solutions, students can play a leading role in changing the future.
“Climate awareness is critical to all MIT students, most of whom will face the consequences of the projection models for the end of the century,” says Babbin. “One-12 will be a focal point of the climate education mission to train the brightest and most creative students to engineer a better world and understand the complex science necessary to design and verify any solutions they invent.”
Justin Cole, who transferred to MIT in January from the University of Colorado, served in the U.S. Air Force for nine years. Over the course of his service, he had a front row seat to the changing climate. From helping with the wildfire cleanup in Black Forest, Colorado — after the state’s most destructive fire at the time — to witnessing two category 5 typhoons in Japan in 2018, Cole’s experiences of these natural disasters impressed upon him that climate security was a prerequisite to international security.
Cole was recently accepted into the MIT Energy and Climate Club Launchpad initiative where he will work to solve real-world climate and energy problems with professionals in industry.
“All of the dots are connecting so far in my classes, and all the hopes that I have for studying the climate crisis and the solutions to it at MIT are coming true,” says Cole.
With a career path that is increasingly growing, there is a rising demand for scientists and engineers who have both deep knowledge of environmental and climate systems and expertise in methods for climate change mitigation.
“Climate science must be coupled with climate solutions. As we experience worsening climate change, the environmental system will increasingly behave in new ways that we haven’t seen in the past,” says Howland. “Solutions to climate change must go beyond good engineering of small-scale components. We need to ensure that our system-scale solutions are maximally effective in reducing climate change, but are also resilient to climate change. And there is no time to waste,” he says.

y/n raced in the fim juniorgp world championship and won at 14. there was a min age of 16 to enter the motogp then, it's now been raised to 18, so considering that and being a women in motorsports, she chose to focus on her studies as a backup option.
y/n fell in love with reporting while studying for her bsc in psychology and started her youtube channel around then, documenting her experiences including her data science internship with red bull.
she's a real life bad*ss who's opened up so many opportunities for students wanting to pursue a career in motorsports, so go put some respect on my mother's name rafecameron1 !!!!

The best part about being a third generation Trekkie is bringing my mother and grandmother into conversations. Granny adored Star Trek (ToS) when it was live. The absolute stars in her eyes when she told me how "it was just... so cool" and the tale of how she got Nimoy's autograph after a day of shooting always delights me. My Ma will have some really hilarious bi-curious moments but loves Worf in a way that annoys my Dad. She is amused that my childhood crush on Data and Spock has progressed into me finding a man that loves science, can be extremely logical when I need him to be, and dotes on a cat. Said man has been watching TNG with me and I am absolutely delighted for him to see Spot and eventually get into DS9 with Garak fuels me. We now guess what career path we would have taken had we lived in the universe just spurns the little mental fan fiction I write in my head every night to help me go to sleep. Being back on Tumblr and seeing the history and knowing that my family was there to see it live makes things extra fun. No matter what, we have the stars.

Thinking of Ratio with a female s/o but with the personality/backstory of Shinosawa Hiro from Gakuen Idolmaster! So reader is a genius at a lot of studies that involved her brain and graduated in science major when she's young but afterwards she purposely decided to pursue a career in something physical that she's bad at (Hiro's case is an idol, but you can pick anything) because she wanted to experience working hard for her dreams and not taking the easy path, but the way reader expresses it might've been sounding like a masochist in all its right.
I'd like to see your take on it!
“The harder the battle, the sweeter the victory”
Summary: Ratio is deeply intrigued by his partner, a brilliant young woman who has chosen to step away from intellectual pursuits and challenge herself in physical disciplines, even though she’s not naturally gifted in them. Despite her genius in science, she deliberately chooses a path full of struggle and failure, finding joy in the growth that comes from working hard at something difficult. Ratio, who values mastery and efficiency, admires her tenacity but finds himself puzzled by her desire to struggle.

Ratio stood at the window of his study, deep in thought, his hair falling over one eye as he contemplated the latest data in front of him. His eyes scanned the complex equations with an intensity that could rival the brightest stars. Yet, despite his intellectual brilliance, there was one thing on his mind that consistently eluded him.
You.
His brilliant, enigmatic partner. His equal in intellect, if not surpassing him, yet you—like him—had a particular kind of brilliance that didn't quite align with the norm. You weren’t merely driven by the thirst for knowledge; you sought something else entirely. Something that, to him, was still a mystery. It had all started when you, a certified genius in science, chose a path that left many baffled.
Where others expected you to continue a career in research, becoming a figure of recognition in your field, you chose instead to embark on a journey of physicality, something you’d never excelled at. He remembered the day you told him about your decision. It had been a casual conversation over coffee, but the conviction in your voice had caught him off guard.
“I’m tired of the easy path,” you had said, your voice as soft as it was resolute. “I want to experience what it’s like to fail, to struggle. To work hard for something, rather than having everything handed to me on a silver platter.”
He had been unable to hide his confusion. “But... why?”
You had smiled, a strange gleam in your eyes. “Because... I find joy in things that don’t come easily. I’m no masochist, Ratio, but I believe there’s something valuable in pushing past the limits of one’s comfort. In fact, I’m quite looking forward to it.”
And so, you had chosen to pursue a career as a professional dancer, a path that required discipline, coordination, and physical grace—everything you had not been born with. He had watched, sometimes in awe, as you tackled each practice with a mixture of determination and, what he could only describe as, delight. He knew the truth: you thrived in adversity. It was almost as if failure was your driving force.
As always, Ratio had been caught in your orbit. Despite the frustrations he experienced seeing you struggle in your pursuit, there was an undeniable admiration he held for your tenacity. You were no longer the perfect student or the prodigy who walked through every challenge with ease. No, you were something more: a mystery, a riddle he couldn’t quite solve.
On one occasion, you had returned to the apartment after an especially grueling rehearsal. You were drenched in sweat, but there was that same spark in your eyes—burning brightly, full of satisfaction, even in the face of exhaustion.
“That was awful,” you had said, falling onto the couch beside him. “I felt like I was going to collapse halfway through. But... I think I might have learned something new today. Something that will help me improve tomorrow.”
Ratio raised an eyebrow, unable to stop himself from chuckling lightly. “You’re... something else, you know that?” He reached for his cup of tea, his eyes studying you with a mixture of concern and admiration. “You work so hard, and yet you constantly talk about the satisfaction of failing. I have to admit, I don’t fully understand it.”
You smiled, stretching your arms as you reclined back. “Maybe you don’t need to. You know how much I love to learn, Ratio. But what good is learning if you only do what’s easy? It’s the struggle, the moments when you feel like giving up, that shape us into something better.”
He leaned back in his chair, his mind racing. He had always been so focused on mastery and achievement, on knowledge and efficiency. But you... you were driven by something different, something intangible. It was as if your brilliance only found true purpose when it was matched with your determination to grow in areas you were weakest.
He couldn’t help but admire your dedication, even as he feared that you were pushing yourself too hard.
“That’s your way of thinking,” he murmured, glancing at you with a thoughtful expression. “But let me ask you this—are you really enjoying it? Or are you just addicted to the feeling of pushing yourself beyond your limits?”
You shrugged, still lying on the couch. “Maybe it’s both. I guess I won’t know for sure until I’ve reached the end. But that’s part of the fun, isn’t it? Not knowing where the struggle will take me.”
He couldn’t argue with that. There was a certain allure to your mindset, a magnetic pull that kept him coming back for more. Despite his own cold, calculated nature, you had managed to draw him into a world where failure was celebrated, where the beauty of growth existed in the very act of trying and falling short.
It was a world that, despite its challenges, seemed to hold its own kind of wisdom.
“I can’t say I fully understand you,” Ratio admitted, standing up and walking over to you. “But I do admire you, even if it means I have to watch you fail... again and again.”
You sat up, a mischievous grin playing on your lips. “It’s not failure if you’re learning from it, Ratio. It’s just... progress in disguise.”
He leaned down to kiss your forehead, his expression softening. “I suppose I’ll have to learn to accept that.”
And as the two of you sat together, surrounded by books and scattered notes, the dance of knowledge and struggle continued—a dance where two brilliant minds, though different in their pursuits, found their way through the complexities of life, side by side.
