Summary: Natasha's playing with fire when a new resident joins the Compound.

Another day, another mission. Since last week’s mess, it seems like Fury’s been finding ways to torture the team.
Yes, at the end they were able to retrieve the drive with the data of over twenty enhanced individuals. But so did HYDRA. And now the Avengers are on a race against time to locate them before the Russians do.
Natasha walks to Fury’s office, not excited at the prospect of risking her life to recruit people who didn’t really want to be found.
“Yes?��� she says as soon as Fury turns around. He hands over a very heavy binder. “Is this their criminal record?”
Great, a weirdo with a troubled past. Natasha might not make it out alive.
“No, that’s their academic stuff. She’s a scientist. Crazy smart” Fury explains. “Have you heard of Bio-Thermokinesis?”
“No, not really”
“The ability to manipulate the body temperature of oneself and/or others” he recites, having learned the concept just now.
“That doesn’t sound so bad” Natasha says, closing the folder. It’s certainly better than the last few people she had to chase down.
“Yeah, until she induces a heat stroke or hypothermia” Fury scoffs. “We’ve been failing at recruiting these people. It would be nice to have a win. Plus, she could work in the lab with Banner and Stark”
“I don’t think Nerd Club is worth one’s freedom” Natasha mutters, skimming through the file.
“Well, either way, this mission doesn’t requires strenght. It requires charm. You up for it or should I send Hill?”
As Natasha gets to the picture of the target, she looks up.
“I’ll handle it”

As usual, you’re carrying more than you can possibly handle. Books, your laptop, a sandwich from the cafeteria, and correspondence from the main office.
By the time you manage to open the door to your office, half of the things in your arms are dangerously close to scattering across the hardwood floor.
“Oh, shit” you mutter when your keys drop.
“Need a hand?” a voice says and you jump back, the rest of your stuff flying across the room.
“Uh… can I help you?” you say, because the most beautiful woman you’ve ever seen is perched up on your desk, legs crossed and a playful smirk across her striking features.
“Are you Doctor Y/L/N?”
“Yes. How did you…? I’m pretty sure the door was locked”
Is she a thief? You have absolutely nothing of value, at least not for a conventional burglar. You run every possibility in your mind and then you land on your second least favorite one.
Natasha notices the room getting warmer, probably because of how flustered you got. The file seems accurate regarding your power.
“AC broke down?” she asks innocently, undoing the top button of her shirt.
“Uh… I… I’ll open the window” you say, pushing it and leaning against the window pain. You consider jumping down to escape, but it’s a considerable height. You take a breath, deciding to face the matter head on. “So, which agency sent you?”
“Ever heard of S.H.I.E.L.D.?”
“Yes, that was my first guess” you admit with a sad smile. “What can I do for you, Agent…?”
“Call me Natasha” she says, hopping off the desk. “I’m afraid I am the bearer of bad news… and a generous offer”
“Mmm” you nod, fixing your glasses.
“A tactical team was sent to stop the purchase of confidential information for 30 enhanced individuals. We were able to obtain it… and so did HYDRA”
“Listen” you raise your hand, taking off your glasses and pinching the bridge of your nose. “I get it. HYDRA and S.H.I.E.L.D. know about me. The thing is, my power isn’t something you can leverage in a fight. I doubt they’ll be very interested in me”
“I think you’re wrong. And it’s not just your ability. Your expertise in science and your genetic makeup can be used to experiment”
“So, is that what S.H.I.E.L.D. wants to do with me?” you sigh, looking out the window. You’re enjoying the view, vaguely aware that life as you know it is over.
“We want to offer you shelter at the Avengers Compound. 24 hour security, top facilities and technology. You can continue your research” Natasha says, trying to make it sound like a great deal.
It brings her back to that time Fury told her it was either work for the US government or end up in the Raft.
Your offer is slightly better, but a golden prison is still a prison.
“Are there any questions I can answer before you make a decision?” she offers with a kinder tone.
“Yeah. Do I even have a choice?”

Academic life is all you’ve ever known. Grants were the perfect way to do your research without having to look for a benefactor and expose yourself. You could learn things about your DNA, your abilities, while doing other stuff without anyone noticing.
Now, you wake up and there’s nothing that drives you. You live with people who have exceptional skills, physical prowess, and military training. Their world is avenging, your world is scientific papers and books.
Sure, their lab is nice, but most of the times you end up leaving early, completely unmotivated and feeling empty.
Natasha watches from afar, and although this isn’t her doing, she feels responsible. She tries to include you in activities she understands, like training, but you’re very obviously not the athletic kind.
Banner is, as usual, isolating himself and Tony speaks nerd, but is barely around unless a mission requires his presence.
It isn’t until one day that Peter shows up to the Compound that Natasha gets an idea.
“Hi, Miss Romanoff. Is Mister Stark around?” he asks in that shy tone he always uses when he’s around Natasha.
“Nope, not to my knowledge. Do you need anything?”
“FRIDAY told me to meet him here. He must have forgotten. I guess I better get back to my Biochem project”
Wait a minute.
He’s a nerd.
“Stay” she says, looking him up and down. Peter reminds her of a puppy when he stops completely, as if he learned a new command. “Wait for Tony at the lab. I’ll try to find him”
“You’re sure? I’m not allowed inside by myself” he hesitates, following Natasha.
“Yeah, it’s fine” she types in the access code, and of course, there you are, spinning in your chair.
As soon as you hear the door opening, you stop your movements, almost falling off.
Natasha finds your blush adorable.
“Hey, Y/N. This is Peter. He’ll be around waiting for Tony”
“Oh, hey. Ok, I was just leaving. I’m kinda stuck either way”
“Ordinary Differential Equations?” Peter says as soon as he gets his eyes on your board.
“Yes. Very impressive” you nod. “This is focused on genetic network. I’m trying to determine inborn errors of metabolism”
“Oh, you know? There’s a brilliant Doctor who’s working on that, maybe her paper would be great for you. She’s Y/N Y/L/N”
“Yeah, that’s me” you say, tapping your chin and examining the board. “What is your ability? If you have any? Maybe I can use a different set of data”
“Yes! I would love to, what do you need from me?” Peter says, a little starstruck at finding out you’re one of the most prestigious researchers in the world.
“For now, a blood sample” you wink at him, adjusting your glasses.
Natasha sits in the back of the lab as you and Peter work together, and you explain every concept to him. This is the first time since you arrived that you don’t look so miserable.
The Russian takes it as a small win when you join her in the common area for dinner.

Since Peter found out about your abilities and your permanent stay at the Compound, you’ve been advising him on his project and college applications. Which is a really nice distraction, but it also makes you miss your own college days.
So, even if you’re in a better mood, it’s still hard to socialize with the team.
One day, you enter the lab to find Rogers, Wilson and Barnes looking at a screen, while Natasha types.
“Whoever encrypted this is slightly smarter than me. Only slightly”
They look away as you drag a chair to focus on your own stuff, a cup of coffee in your hand and a cookie in your mouth.
“Hi…” you wave at them, feeling intimidated as usual.
“Hey, weather girl” Sam winks at you.
Natasha rolls her eyes and elbows him.
“Ignore him, Y/N”
You can tell she’s getting frustrated, so you inch closer, looking at the code over her shoulder. Placing your hand on her elbow, you silently ask for permission to take over.
The redhead eyes you curiously, but stops typing and moves the keyboard your way. It takes you twenty seconds to hack into the files.
“How…?”
“I used to hack into databases to make sure my name wasn’t on any watchlist” you explain casually. Natasha laughs at that. “Anyway, there you go”
“Thanks, Y/N. You’re my hero” Natasha says, smiling up at you. Her tone makes you blush and you nod, going back to your desk.
“Nice work. We could use your help if you’re free some other time” Steve says as they leave the lab.
“Of course, Capitan”

An intruder changes your mind about training. The threat is handled swiftly and you don’t even have time to hide before F.R.I.D.A.Y. confirms the suspect has been taken into custody
But you don’t even know how to begin to defend yourself, so you come back to Natasha, asking if her offer still stands.
Needless to say, the spy is more than happy to train you. Not just because it means you’re comfortable asking for things, but because Natasha can teach you something that will help you protect yourself.
You start with two sessions per week, which later turns to four, until you’re comfortable with training almost daily.
The rest of the team joins from time to time, giving you advice and helping you when Natasha’s away on missions.
After a few weeks, Natasha notices how your resistance is better and you’re building some muscle.
Only as a professional observation. It’s not like she finds you attractive, with that nerdy charm and toned arms.
One day, as you’re leaving the gym, she checks her bag, cursing when she notices she forgot a change of clothes.
“Wanna borrow one of my hoodies?” you offer, handing over your NYU sweatshirt.
“You sure?” Natasha hesitates.
“Yeah, I got tons of these. From all the places I’ve done work or research”
“I’ll give it back” she promises, taking it.
That turns out to be a lie.
A few days later, when you’re folding your laundry, F.R.I.D.A.Y. requests that you join Tony and Banner in the lab. Leaving the basket in the living room, you think nothing of it, nor do you notice that a couple of your sweatshirts are gone.
It all comes to light a week later, when Natasha comes back from a grueling mission. The only thing that will make her feel better is staying in her room while wearing your UCLA hoodie.
She totally forgets about her attire when she answers the door.
“Huh, so that’s where it was” you tilt your head, smiling.
“I…”
“I’m watching a movie, care to join me? It’s one of your favorites”
“Ok” she nods, surprised that you’re not mad about the stolen sweatshirt.
Natasha enters your room, appreciating the combination of books, notes and the board with equations. After you apologize for the mess, you offer a place to sit in your bed.
“It looks good on you” you compliment the redhead. Natasha smiles, trying to be nonchalant about it.
“Thank you”
It becomes a habit, to steal your hoodies.
“Objectively speaking, you don’t actually need them as you can regulate your temperature” Natasha comments one day, digging through your closet. To her shock, she finds a sweatshirt with a sorority logo on it.
“Not mine. A girl I hooked up with in college” you explain.
Natasha rolls her eyes, throwing the garment as far away as possible while pulling a face. You laugh at her reaction.
“Don’t be jealous, Natty. You’re my favorite” you promise, unaware of the effect your words had on her.
“And yet you never let me wear the Harvard one”
“That was my first” you shrug your shoulders.
“First college or first hook up?” Natasha taunts and you laugh.
“A nerd never kisses and tell. Actually, a nerd rarely kisses anyone to being with” you try to joke, pulling out the Harvard sweatshirt from your closet to put it on.
Natasha eyes it, and you catch her intentions a little too late. She inches forward and you stretch your arm back, trying to place the hoodie out of reach.
“Nu-uh” you shake your head, laughing as she keeps trying to steal it. “Natasha, there are like ten other hoodies you could take!”
“I want this one!” she insists, jumping. Her body crashes against yours, and you both stumble, falling in your bed. Limbs are tangled and her laugh tickles your ear as she struggles to lift herself up. After a moment, Natasha smiles, looking at your lips. “Gotcha”
You don’t even know what to say, her intense stare making you feel warm -both literally and figuratively - and your heart beats faster when it seems like she’ll lean forward and kiss you.
“Agent Romanoff, there’s an urgent call for you” FRIDAY interrupts the moment.
Natasha sighs, standing up and looking at you.
“Catch you later?”
“Yeah” you nod, trying to hide your disappointment.

Natasha was gone for a week, and returned with a very bad injury. You heard the news as Steve and Tony were arguing in the kitchen, blaming each other as usual.
“Where…? Is she ok…?” you try to interrupt them, but they’re in the middle of a screaming match.
“Come with me” Maria says, taking you to a whole different wing of the Compound. Since you’ve never been on missions, you didn’t know about the Medbay.
Natasha’s lying in a hospital bed, asleep.
“She’s ok. A guy threw a knife at her, but it was only a superficial stab wound. Doctor said she’ll be discharged tomorrow” Maria eases your nerves.
Of course, for her it’s easy to say it’s no big deal. Agents are shot, blown up, killed in the field. A little scratch is nothing, especially for Natasha. But you take a deep breath, leaving the Medbay in a rush.
As you lock yourself in the Avenger’s Lab, you make F.R.I.D.A.Y. a simple request.
“Show me the mission’s footage”

Natasha’s had worst, truly. But still, her head is throbbing when she wakes up. The doctor discharges her with the instruction to rest for a week. No training either.
The Russian notices a bag with clothes on the chair next to her bed. She finds your Harvard sweatshirt, which puts a tiny smile on her face.
You are nowhere to be found in the Compound when she returns, so she goes to her room to take another nap, the painkillers making her sleepy.
By the time Natasha wakes up to get something to eat, F.R.I.D.A.Y. requests her presence in the lab.
“What is it?” she says, surprised to find you working on a tablet. It looks like you haven’t slept in the last 24 hours, five or six cups of coffee around the various tables in the lab.
“I created a new technology for your suit” you jump right to it. “It has motion sensors that are triggered by incoming threats. That way, if someone tries to sneak up on you, you can either get an alert or program a defense mechanism that can be shot from any part of the suit”
Natasha takes the tablet, running the simulation. She’s impressed with the level of detail you’ve placed on this and on such short time. She’s about to thank you, but you’re already asleep in the couch of the lab, clearly exhausted from all the work you’ve done.
The sight of your sleeping form makes Natasha’s heart flutter.

Movie night is the one tradition you’ve always been on board with. Coincidentally, it’s Natasha’s least favorite. Depending on her mood, she’ll join everyone on the living room, or talk you into watching something else in your room or hers.
Tonight, she stops by once the movie has already started. As usual, you’re on the couch in the far back of the room, your glasses reflecting the screen as you eat some popcorn.
“Hey” Natasha leans over the back of the couch and whispers against your ear, making you jump. Your eyes follow her as she jumps over to plop down next to you.
“You’re not supposed to be doing that with a hole on your side, Natasha” you reprimand.
“It’s fine” she lies, grabbing some popcorn.
As the movie keeps going, the woman inches closer to you. At first you think she’s settling in her seat, but then her hand spreads on the back of the couch, dangerously close to your neck.
It’s fine. You can handle it.
Nope, you absolutely can’t. Not when you feel Natasha’s nimble fingers playing with the hairs on the back of your neck, her digits alternating between caressing the skin and scratching your scalp.
“You’re hot” she whispers at some point and you turn to look at her, dazed.
“Huh?”
“You feel hot” she clarifies a second later, her eyes looking at your lips. “Is everything ok? Those powers of yours are acting up”
“I’m fine” you nod, looking back at the screen. Aware that you are in fact increasing the temperature in the room, you take a breath and close your eyes, before anyone else notices.
You’re almost back to normal when Natasha stretches and lies across your lap, her left hand squeezing your thigh as the other one begins to trace patterns in your skin.
All while she's wearing your Harvard sweatshirt.
Your only thought is to take it off, along with the rest of her clothes and kiss every inch of her body.
“F.R.I.D.A.Y., is the thermostat broken…?” Tony finally snaps, annoyed at the sudden changes in temperature. “Never mind”
Everyone follows his eyes as he looks to the back of the room, where Natasha is playing dumb while riling you up.
“Can you two find a room to turn into a sauna and spare the rest of us?” Tony says, which makes your eyes widen, and the room practically turns into a freezer. “Great, now we’re all turning into popsicles. Cap, you’re familiar with the feeling, right?”
“Don’t be so dramatic, Tony” Natasha finally stands up, showing you some mercy. “Come on, detka”
“Uh, ok” you say, your voice barely a whisper as you allow the woman to drag you back to her room.
As soon as the door is shut, she pushes you against it.
“So, tell me” she says with a playful smile. “How hot do you think it will get here?”
You can only shake your head, speechless. Natasha smiles, kissing you softly. All thoughts leave your head, opening your mouth to give her access. You’ll do anything she asks, anything at all.
“I see” she smiles when the room gets hot. “Good thing we won’t have our clothes on”
It’s the best sex of your life.
So much so, the fire alarm goes off in the entire Compound.
“Fucking worth it” you sigh as you’re both naked in bed, the water from the sprinklers evaporating from all the heat in the room.

LaRue Burbank, mathematician and computer, is just one of the many women who were instrumental to NASA missions.
4 Little Known Women Who Made Huge Contributions to NASA
Women have always played a significant role at NASA and its predecessor NACA, although for much of the agency’s history, they received neither the praise nor recognition that their contributions deserved. To celebrate Women’s History Month – and properly highlight some of the little-known women-led accomplishments of NASA’s early history – our archivists gathered the stories of four women whose work was critical to NASA’s success and paved the way for future generations.
LaRue Burbank: One of the Women Who Helped Land a Man on the Moon
LaRue Burbank was a trailblazing mathematician at NASA. Hired in 1954 at Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory (now NASA’s Langley Research Center), she, like many other young women at NACA, the predecessor to NASA, had a bachelor's degree in mathematics. But unlike most, she also had a physics degree. For the next four years, she worked as a "human computer," conducting complex data analyses for engineers using calculators, slide rules, and other instruments. After NASA's founding, she continued this vital work for Project Mercury.
In 1962, she transferred to the newly established Manned Spacecraft Center (now NASA’s Johnson Space Center) in Houston, becoming one of the few female professionals and managers there. Her expertise in electronics engineering led her to develop critical display systems used by flight controllers in Mission Control to monitor spacecraft during missions. Her work on the Apollo missions was vital to achieving President Kennedy's goal of landing a man on the Moon.
Eilene Galloway: How NASA became… NASA

Eilene Galloway wasn't a NASA employee, but she played a huge role in its very creation. In 1957, after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, Senator Richard Russell Jr. called on Galloway, an expert on the Atomic Energy Act, to write a report on the U.S. response to the space race. Initially, legislators aimed to essentially re-write the Atomic Energy Act to handle the U.S. space goals. However, Galloway argued that the existing military framework wouldn't suffice – a new agency was needed to oversee both military and civilian aspects of space exploration. This included not just defense, but also meteorology, communications, and international cooperation.
Her work on the National Aeronautics and Space Act ensured NASA had the power to accomplish all these goals, without limitations from the Department of Defense or restrictions on international agreements. Galloway is even to thank for the name "National Aeronautics and Space Administration", as initially NASA was to be called “National Aeronautics and Space Agency” which was deemed to not carry enough weight and status for the wide-ranging role that NASA was to fill.
Barbara Scott: The “Star Trek Nerd” Who Led Our Understanding of the Stars

A self-described "Star Trek nerd," Barbara Scott's passion for space wasn't steered toward engineering by her guidance counselor. But that didn't stop her! Fueled by her love of math and computer science, she landed at Goddard Spaceflight Center in 1977. One of the first women working on flight software, Barbara's coding skills became instrumental on missions like the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) and the Thermal Canister Experiment on the Space Shuttle's STS-3. For the final decade of her impressive career, Scott managed the flight software for the iconic Hubble Space Telescope, a testament to her dedication to space exploration.
Dr. Claire Parkinson: An Early Pioneer in Climate Science Whose Work is Still Saving Lives

Dr. Claire Parkinson's love of math blossomed into a passion for climate science. Inspired by the Moon landing, and the fight for civil rights, she pursued a graduate degree in climatology. In 1978, her talents landed her at Goddard, where she continued her research on sea ice modeling. But Parkinson's impact goes beyond theory. She began analyzing satellite data, leading to a groundbreaking discovery: a decline in Arctic sea ice coverage between 1973 and 1987. This critical finding caught the attention of Senator Al Gore, highlighting the urgency of climate change.
Parkinson's leadership extended beyond research. As Project Scientist for the Aqua satellite, she championed making its data freely available. This real-time information has benefitted countless projects, from wildfire management to weather forecasting, even aiding in monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic. Parkinson's dedication to understanding sea ice patterns and the impact of climate change continues to be a valuable resource for our planet.

Canada’s postsecondary institutions have a responsibility to protect students and others on campus from the risks of post-COVID condition as a matter of campus safety.
Canada’s Chief Science Advisor, Mona Nemer, recently released the report, Dealing with the Fallout: Post-COVID Condition and its Continued Impacts on Individuals and Society.
Post-COVID condition (PCC), also known as “long COVID,” refers to the poorly understood and often serious health damage left by the SARS-CoV-2 virus after the acute illness appears to have passed.
Universities, colleges and schools have a duty to take reasonable precautions to protect students, staff and faculty from foreseeable harms. They must ensure the water on campus is safe to drink. They must install fire and carbon monoxide detectors and make evacuation plans. Many have adopted a smoke-free policy on campus as part of a commitment to an international charter on health promotion in universities and colleges. Yet there is little pandemic health promotion on Canadian campuses.
The authors of this story bring together expertise in higher education, engineering, biomedical sciences, medicine and the health humanities. As a few of us noted in a recent peer-reviewed article on the pandemic for BMC Medicine, “COVID-19 is airborne, transmitted primarily via infectious aerosols that move through the air like smoke.”
As with any other pathogen (or smoke, for that matter), if it can’t get into your body, then it can’t make you sick. The Chief Science Advisor’s report recognizes the vital importance of reducing PCC cases by reducing infections.
Post-COVID condition A COVID-19 infection can be the tip of a very large iceberg. A Statistics Canada report last year indicated that Canadians have lost millions of school and work days because of PCC. PCC has a long list of possible symptoms, including negative effects on brain functioning, mental health, as well as cardiovascular and lung health.
The Chief Science Advisor’s report notes that “with each SARS-CoV-2 reinfection, the risk of developing PCC is cumulative.” Postsecondary students are particularly vulnerable to repeated COVID-19 infections because of shared living spaces (dorms, student housing) and frontline work (waiting tables and retail jobs, for instance), and transmission can be boosted by extensive mixing due to complex timetables and crowded spaces on campuses.
While we lack specific data on sick days and long COVID cases at the postsecondary level in Canada, national data suggests over 40 per cent of Canadians were infected over a three-month period last winter. There are about two million postsecondary students in Canada.
Postsecondary students are inevitably affected by the multiple surges in infections each year, and so are losing days to acute COVID-19 illness. And, with each infection, they are at increased risk of PCC. This is key to understanding the pandemic’s ongoing disruptions to education and well-being for the current generation of college and university students. A study of U.S. university students with PCC noted symptoms such as “difficulty thinking, fatigue, feeling anxious” and “memory loss,” consequential for academic performance and overall well-being.
Reducing infections
We have abundant high-quality peer-reviewed scholarship from a range of disciplines to help us reduce infections. Building on this evidence base, the Chief Science Advisor’s report calls for “protective measures through steps that government, institutions and employers can take.” These protections include “improved indoor air quality,” better “public messaging” and “effective masking in crowded spaces.”
Improving indoor air quality includes increasing ventilation rates, adding high quality filters to the air handling systems, the use of portable air filtration units, germicidal ultraviolet lights, and the monitoring and public display of carbon dioxide levels in all living and learning spaces on campus. Improving indoor air quality has been shown to reduce in-classroom transmission of COVID-19 by at least 80 per cent in schools.
Free N95 masks and updated vaccinations should also be made available, and their use promoted on campuses to improve awareness and access. Communications should educate students on reducing their risk. Drawing on faculty expertise from all disciplines, and with little financial cost, postsecondary institutions can implement and model best practices on all of these fronts.
Organized, evidence-informed efforts are also urgently needed to accommodate students whose coursework has been significantly affected by infection or PCC. PCC includes a wide range of symptoms at varying levels of severity, so no cookie-cutter approach will work well.
The pandemic’s ongoing effects Institutions lack even the most basic data about PCC on campus. How many people on campus are already affected by PCC and to what degree? How many are on extended leave or had to withdraw or resign because of it?
Transdisciplinary faculty and student expertise and lived experience can help institutions to understand the pandemic’s ongoing effects. This is a necessary step to the development of more inclusive and effective approaches to mitigating the harms of the pandemic.
Without efforts to reduce students’ risk of getting sick — and to meaningfully help them when they do — we can only expect more population-level problems with well-being, ongoing health-care needs and academic success. These effects have the potential to ripple into the general workforce, adding to population and economic consequences. While the pace of research on COVID-19 has been and continues to be fast, new discoveries will not erase the lost educational days and other long-term harms that are already putting pressure on this generation.
The burden of PCC and the pandemic will will shape the next half century, and it is in everyone’s interest that our postsecondary institutions start working now to limit these harms.

Few in the media seemed eager to attend a ceremony last week in Washington, D.C., where the prestigious American Academy of Sciences and Letters was awarding its top intellectual freedom award.
The problem may have been the recipient: Stanford Professor Dr. Jay Bhattacharya.
Bhattacharya has spent years being vilified by the media over his dissenting views on the pandemic. As one of the signatories of the 2020 Great Barrington Declaration, he was canceled, censored, and even received death threats.
That open letter called on government officials and public health authorities to rethink the mandatory lockdowns and other extreme measures in light of past pandemics.
All the signatories became targets of an orthodoxy enforced by an alliance of political, corporate, media, and academic groups. Most were blocked on social media despite being accomplished scientists with expertise in this area.
It did not matter that positions once denounced as “conspiracy theories” have been recognized or embraced by many.
Some argued that there was no need to shut down schools, which has led to a crisis in mental illness among the young and the loss of critical years of education. Other nations heeded such advice with more limited shutdowns (including keeping schools open) and did not experience our losses.
Others argued that the virus’s origin was likely the Chinese research lab in Wuhan. That position was denounced by the Washington Post as a “debunked” coronavirus “conspiracy theory.” The New York Times Science and Health reporter Apoorva Mandavilli called any mention of the lab theory “racist.”
Federal agencies now support the lab theory as the most likely based on the scientific evidence.
The Biden administration tried to censor this Stanford doctor, but he won in court
Likewise, many questioned the efficacy of those blue surgical masks and supported natural immunity to the virus — both positions were later recognized by the government.
Others questioned the six-foot rule used to shut down many businesses as unsupported by science. In congressional testimony, Dr. Anthony Fauci recently admitted that the 6-foot rule “sort of just appeared” and “wasn’t based on data.” Yet not only did the rule result in heavily enforced rules (and meltdowns) in public areas, the media further ostracized dissenting critics.
Again, Fauci and other scientists did little to stand up for these scientists or call for free speech to be protected. As I discuss in my new book, “The Indispensable Right,” the result is that we never really had a national debate on many of these issues and the result of massive social and economic costs.
I spoke at the University of Chicago with Bhattacharya and other dissenting scientists in the front row a couple of years ago. After the event, I asked them how many had been welcomed back to their faculties or associations since the recognition of some of their positions.
They all said that they were still treated as pariahs for challenging the groupthink culture.
Now the scientific community is recognizing the courage shown by Bhattacharya and others with its annual Robert J. Zimmer Medal for Intellectual Freedom.
So what about all of those in government, academia, and the media who spent years hounding these scientists?
Universities shred their ethics to aid Biden’s social-media censorship
Biden Administration officials and Democratic members targeted Bhattacharya and demanded his censorship. For example, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) attacked Bhattacharya and others who challenged the official narrative during the pandemic. Krishnamoorthi expressed outrage that the scientists were even allowed to testify as “a purveyor of COVID-19 misinformation.”
Journalists and columnists also supported the censorship and blacklisting of these scientists. In the Los Angeles Times, columnist Michael Hiltzik decried how “we’re living in an upside-down world” because Stanford allowed these scientists to speak at a scientific forum. He was outraged that, while “Bhattacharya’s name doesn’t appear in the event announcement,” he was an event organizer. Hiltzik also wrote a column titled “The COVID lab leak claim isn’t just an attack on science, but a threat to public health.”
Then there are those lionized censors at Twitter who shadow-banned Bhattacharya. As former CEO Parag Agrawal generally explained, the “focus [was] less on thinking about free speech … [but[ who can be heard.”
None of this means that Bhattacharya or others were right in all of their views. Instead, many of the most influential voices in the media, government, and academia worked to prevent this discussion from occurring when it was most needed.
There is still a debate over Bhattacharya’s “herd immunity” theories, but there is little debate over the herd mentality used to cancel him.
The Academy was right to honor Bhattacharya. It is equally right to condemn all those who sought to silence a scientist who is now being praised for resisting their campaign to silence him and others.

Saw this really cool post of a 1982 "SF" (Science fiction but in Japan that included things like anime, manga, tokusatsu, etc at the time) magazine that did a survey of active fan groups/circles at the time - ~woo, precious data! Lets see what we got:
Love to see a good gender breakdown - as is often the case in these things, while it is of course majority men the number of women participating is very strong. You do notice the age imbalance there - many women in their teens and college-aged, but it drops off quickly. I suspect that this is primarily because this survey is right in the middle of the first wave of the "pop SF boom", where more approachable works like Gundam and new manga subgenres were rapidly growing the community. So the older cadre was more heavily men, while the new group is more balanced. However, this is the early 1980's - it might just be that when a woman graduates college she was expected to marry and "settle down" still, inhibiting participation in these kinds of groups. I think it is primarily the former, Japan had pretty rapidly changed in the 1970's and female creative types were commonplace by then, but I won't pretend the latter players no role.
The writing on this page just contextualizes the piece, not much to report, though it does note that "3 people replied 'other' for gender...as a joke!" Sure, jan!
Anyway, on to page 2, what is our poll question of the day...

....*siiiiiighs* guys I didn't, I didn't look at the second page before typing this up! I just wanted to report the gender data! This just happens to me, I swear -_-
But I can't back out now I guess:
It actually splits the question by gender - men are asked "are you a lolicon" while women are asked "what do you think of guys who are lolicon" - sexists, way to erase the female lolicon. Not actually joking there, it is a quite a thing due to its overlap with rape and dubcon fetishes - but I won't pretend I have expertise on the prevalence of that in 1982 Japan's SF community, even if it you see it today. Anyway, most men are not lolicons (the tallest line), though others fall on a spectrum from interested to "graduated", certainly a choice of words one could make.
Funnily a good dozen say they are called that by others, but not themselves - I believe that is related to the vague line between loli & shoujo aesthetics at the time. Which is important to emphasize, as I always do on this topic - sometimes the word lolicon just means "youthful" or "cute", sometimes it means like high schoolers, and sometimes it means real-deal underage stuff, and you won't know without context.
Meanwhile two women label lolicon men as "cute!", good for those two living their truth, while others are broadly tolerant but have Opinions. Which is fun, because the rest of the page is people sharing said opinions, sorted into "good" or "bad"! Some choice ones:
★ It's a symptom of modern civilization’s sick parts, but also an inevitable phenomenon. It’s better than having a rabbit or cat complex. Don’t lay hands on young girls. Lolicon must remain platonic. (♂/19/)
You see this theme a bit, "symptom of modernity", the new sexual fetishes are a product of a changing world. Certainly up for debate, but also very "in vogue" for the 80's & 90's to worry about that sort of declinist narrative. Then again, guy is a catgirl and bunnygirl hater, not sure we should listen to their shit taste.
On the flip side you get the "natural way of things" types, of which this is my favourite:
★ There’s nothing abnormal about having a dream involving an uncontrollable urge towards pre-teens. Even Romeo and Juliet would have made Romeo a lolicon given Juliet’s age (14), but people don’t think of it that way. Only at that age can girls love and respect men without ulterior motives. (♂/19/)
That last line, you are telling me so much about you with that one!! You can see how this is discourse, right? Like if one side says you are a "symptom of modernity" you ofc respond with "this is how all guys are" and with callbacks to traditional culture.
The "bad" side has a lot of ruthless condemnation, with more than one call for the lolicons to simply die or labelling them worthless scum. The magazine's writers do try to keep the tone breezy but I do think this topic being actually contentious in the community pokes through here. Though this serious one really did undercut herself a bit at the end:
★ I can understand why one person of the same gender might feel admiration or affection for a child or young girl, but for a man to only be able to love much younger women? That’s a mental illness! If they aren’t willing to fix themselves, they might as well die. They’re enemies of women. It's not going to turn out like Nabokov's Lolita. (♀/20s/)
I mean they did also kill jesus Humbert Humbert in Lolita. that was a pretty significant thing that happened. like i understand where you’re coming from here but they very much did kill the Lolita guy.
There is an editorial at the end, and it echoes something one of the comments also states; that the lolicon boom was seen as coming from "hard" SF fans, the people who did the really nerdy stuff. There is a word they use actually which is neat: 根暗/Nekura, meaning someone with a "gloomy root". It began seeing use as a slang for hyper-serious, boorish people in the late 1970's and became a fad to use in precisely 1982 - here is a live record of that! They associate "hard SF" fans with these sort of gloomy types who can't take a joke or appreciate hanging out with the buds at a bar, that kind of thing. From there, and here I am reading between the lines, these fans like a sort of "idealistically sterile" world, and lolicon as a preference (in comparison to Real Adult Women) flows naturally.
I mention this because astute readers might be going "oh, like otaku?" and that word was only just buzzing around at this time - it is typically dated to 1983. The editorial writers note that these nekura-types are nowadays proud of that fact, wearing it like an identity:
A: I’m not really sure why, I don’t fully understand the inner workings of the SF world, but it’s like, out there, hardcore SF fans are considered gloomy. Maybe that’s why there’s this connection to lolicon? B: But surprisingly, everyone’s actually pretty cheerful. In today’s world, the 'dark and gloomy tribe' is trendy. It’s like they’re enjoying calling themselves gloomy, almost as a fashion statement.
So yeah, I can totally see proto-otaku discourse going on at the edges here.
There is a third page but it continues in a similar vein. A bunch of mentions of Hideo Azuma, who I am growing increasingly convinced was more of a lodestone for the lolicon boom than is currently appreciated - he is the ur-reference everyone makes. More discussion of girls in sailor uniforms as a gateway drug, yeah yeah, "is fine as long as its fiction", of course of course, one of the magazine editors remarking he wants "a wife for practical uses but a daughter as a pet" yeah okay we can call it we're done here, no more survey data anyway.
Not the topic I expected to find, but still this is really valuable "primary source data" - you can't trust the literary class fully on these things, having first hand quotes from community members on otaku culture in the era is always valuable.

Fallen London Crayon Ask Game: Mango Purée!
mango purée: what’s something modern they would love, and what’s something modern they would hate?
Samuel would simultaneously HUGELY benefit from an autism diagnosis and also find modern working life absolutely soul crushing. Voted most likely to end up in a cult because they promised an appealing commune and he was desperate to escape his life.
But with a diagnosis, or even just the knowledge that autistic is a thing he might be, he'd have a better chance of understanding WHY this sort of thing isn't working, and that it's not a moral failure on his part. In the Neath it's easy for him to run off and have an extremely atypical life, but in The Modern World he would need to intentionally strive to carve out that atypical life for himself. ANYWAY THATS NOT THE ACTUAL ANSWER THATS JUST. A THING A MODERN SAM NEEDS.
Modern thing he would hate: the simple fact that all the maps are filled in. Everything is safe. He'd be quick to acknowledge that that's better, overall, for everyone, but I think he'd quietly really long for the open edges of the map where There Be Dragons. Both literally and metaphorically -- Sam is living in a time when you can poison yourself a bunch with dangerous chemicals and it's for Science!! Even if you were very stupid and just die, you got valuable data!!! Now if you eat chemicals in the lab you will just get fired because we already know not to eat them you dummy. You need fifteen years of schooling to catch up on what everyone already knows in most arenas, and Samuel simply does not have that in him. A world that requires him to develop expertise before he can jump in and learn hands-on is a much smaller world, for him. Modern thing he would love: A while ago some friends pondered a Modern Day College AU for our flondons and I decided that, while boats can certainly still exist in college, vibes-wise for the setting it made the most sense to translate Sam's love of zailing into being a Car Guy, and we joked about college AU Black Ribbon being an illegal street racing club. I think this tracks a lot for actual Sam too…… the physicality of learning about and working on his personal machine, the thrill of Go Fast, the competition and adrenaline of Racing.... I think he would love cars like they're people.

I have actually read your sources, none of which touch on the neurobiology of "plurality." However, several neurobiology studies have demonstrated that DID is only a result of trauma. As for the link with messages from Colin Ross, I do not see him as a credible source. I am well aware of his history with DID research, but unfortunately, his belief that he can shoot energy beams out of his eyes and his malpractice lawsuits makes him less than credible.
Reinders research group demonstrates that DID cannot be simulated (across various studies) as people claiming plurality are doing. I would recommend looking beyond simplistic literature and actually understand the real science behind trauma disorders. It makes it very clear that DID and being "multiple" is solely caused by trauma. Now given that "plurality" is a relatively new social contagion, alongside the destruction of research institutes within the US, i doubt any research directly comparing the neurology of people claiming to be "plural" and people with DID will come about.
I highly recommend expanding your "research" into more scientifically rigorous papers. Also the DSM does specify that DID is a trauma disorder, you just have not read the whole section, unless you ignored the part where it mentions that 90% of cases are from child abuse and 10% are from war, terrorism, or child prostitution.
You do realize that the lawsuits hinged around allegations that Colin Ross gave the patient "false memory syndrome," a syndrome made up by a group of accused child molesters to defend other accused child molesters, right?
30 years later, we still have little to no evidence that the syndrome ever existed. There are some studies that have shown some minor false memories can be implanted. But data is conflicting and nothing on the level of the severe persistent traumatic experiences that have been alleged have been validated. The foundation that created this made up syndrome has since closed down.
If you want to talk about pseudoscience, then you should probably talk about the pseudoscience that drove a lot of the malpractice lawsuits against specialists of dissociative identity disorder at the time.
As for Ross's belief that the human eye can emit energy, I genuinely don't see how that is relevant. Plenty of experts in various fields hold some sort of metaphysical beliefs. Especially when those beliefs are outside of their area of expertise. And Ross is primarily a psychiatrist, not a physicist or a biologist.
The fact is that Colin Ross is one of the foremost experts on dissociative identity disorder in the world. He is a doctor who has spent over 40 years working directly with patients with DID. He has written more books on the topic than almost anyone alive. If not more than anyone alive. His contributions to the field are still regularly cited by other reputable doctors because he is considered a credible source by actual academics.
He has spent his entire career fighting for trauma survivors. Working with patients, developing new treatments, and encouraging trauma-centered care.
You would struggle to find doctors with more experience than Colin Ross with treating dissociative identity disorder.
But I get what you are doing. You can't win on the front of expertise and experience. So you go for personal attacks. When faced with the reality that one of the most experienced expert on DID doesn't support your hate, you decide it's better to find anything you can in his history of fighting for trauma survivors to discredit him.
You cannot accept that the experts disagree with you. That you can't actually find ANY experts who support your belief that plurality can only come from trauma. So your only viable move is trying to attack the experts.

If these studies are the ones I think they are, what they show is that DID is distinct from "simulating controls." That is, a control group of neurotypical singlets that simply pretends to have DID. What they show is that "people pretending to have an alter will appear differently on a brain scan than people with DID."
It's really not relevant for a number of reasons, and frankly is built on a lot of circular reasoning. Since these studies literally only compare the DID group to roleplayers, you sort of have to start with the premise that endogenic systems are roleplaying to think this is relevant at all.
"Endos are roleplaying" -> "Studies comparing DID systems to roleplayers show that DID is different from roleplaying" -> "This proves that endogenic systems aren't real" -> "Therefore endos are roleplaying."
Citing studies comparing the brains of DID systems to neurotypical singlets who pretend to have DID as evidence that endogenic systems aren't real makes no sense!
I highly recommend expanding your "research" into more scientifically rigorous papers. Also the DSM does specify that DID is a trauma disorder, you just have not read the whole section, unless you ignored the part where it mentions that 90% of cases are from child abuse and 10% are from war, terrorism, or child prostitution.
How are you guys all failing this much at basic reading comprehension that you imagine words that aren't there? This talking point comes up all the time and it is always just wrong.

Note that it does not mention that this makes up the other 10% of cases, only that they have also been reported. Let's break this paragraph down.
Early life trauma represents an environmental risk factor for DID.
About 90% of cases report neglect or abuse.
The early life traumatic experiences can also include painful childhood medical procedures, war, terrorism and human trafficking.
Onset of the disorder has also been described after exposure to other dysfunctional family dynamics.
Going by this alone, these cases could make up the other 10%... or only 5% or 2%.
90% of cases show reports of abuse or neglect. And then an unspecified number of cases report other forms of traumatic experiences.
I am not saying that DID can for certain form without any trauma at all. I am just saying that if you think that this paragraph proves 100% of DID cases are traumagenic, you have fundamentally failed at reading.

Long time no see folks and friends, so many things happened a lot, graduation , family exploded (*cough* my parents divorced and later my dad kicked me out of the house) , got hired and later quit the job and lastly being a freelance.
I'm a multifandom and this time I would have a take on Chinese Literature : Romance of Three Kingdoms (with a bit of Records of Three Kingdoms and other historical records and folktales), since I used to read some part of it during my highschool years and I really fond on the famous hero like Guan Yu, and surprisingly the topic I wanna write is about his wife!
On the surface, we knew nothing about her, we only saw Guan Yu and his children ; Guan Ping (historically his biological son , and idk why Lua Guanzhong made him adoptive son srsly), Guan Xing and Guan Yinping/Guan E , this sparks me a lot despite knowing that Chinese historical records rarely documented on women's life. People might know about many myths on Guan Yu&Diao Chan or the story of Guan Yu's proposal to Lady Du (yet she later got away with Cao Cao), but nothing was clear on the real wife of this Magnificent Beard general, until I dig down into this story, "Tale of HuaguanSuo", yes! That Guan Suo.
Story of Hua Guan Suo (Huā Guān Suǒ zhuán 花關索傳; literally "The biography of Flower Guan Suo") is a tale about the fictional hero Guan Suo, son of Guan Yu. It is one of the fourteen works of hitherto-unknown popular literature that were unearthed from a Ming Dynasty tomb in Jiading county near Shanghai in 1967.
This story was the first one I saw the trace to the wife of Guan's household, in this tale she was named Hu Jinding (胡金定) , mother to both Guan Ping and Guan Xing , she along with young Guan Ping and unborn Guan Suo survived the assasination by Zhang Fei due to him had no courage to kill a pregnant lady and a child , her role was ended only after the family had reunited later. (And you know how I dislike this version cuz who else gonna lived with a person who would have his bretheren slayed your relatives , spouses and kids in order to "strenghten" the bond? It doesn't make any sense except dramatic sense!)
I have to dig deeper , until one faithful day that I truly found her.
Her name, her real name, is Hu Yue (胡玥)
The Life of Hu Yue , based on folklore (data from guangon.hk)
Hu Yue had no exact birth year recorded but definately younger than Guan Yu (who probably born around 162 AD, one year younger than Liu Bei) , she is a daughter of Hu Bin or Hu Qizhong, a well mannered man and a teacher in Hedong Commandery. It was said per the folktale that Hu Bin probably a "Hu" (descent and came from Donghu Village in Jiezhou (now Donghu Village in Xizhang Township, Yanhu District) He taught her knowledge of literature, martial arts, science, medicine, and art since she was a child. Therefore, Hu Yue received a good education in many aspects since she was a child.
One day, Guan Yu and his friends were walking to the Wind God Temple, they suddenly heard a scream and the branches of the big tree in front of the Wind God Temple split. A girl fell from the tree, and Guan Yu ran forward to catch the girl. (My commentary : C-DRAMA MOMENT! EEEEEEE) The rescued girl was Hu Yue. Hu Bin was deeply grateful to Guan Yu for saving his daughter. He felt that this young man had noble qualities and quick thinking, and he was moved and accepted him as his disciple. Because of his father's appreciation, Hu Yue treated Guan Yu as an elder brother. In terms of reading, Hu Yue received more teachings from her father, so she could exchanged knowledge with Guan Yu.
Guan Yu married Hu Yue when he was 18 years old. After they got married, Hu Yue lived in the countryside according to the Han etiquette, not only sid she served her parents-in-law. She spent more time treating people from far and near with her medical knowledge and expertise. In the second year of their marriage, Hu Yue gave birth to Guan Ping. In the third year, after Guan Yu killed the bully Lü Xiong (My commentary: probably the terrible local magnate, per the ROTK novel) and escaped, Hu Yue took one-year-old Guan Ping and traveled to a small village in the deep mountains of Zhongtiao.
Alas, I hadn't discover anymore evidences on when did she and her eldest son reunited with Guan Yu, we don't know whether she had risen up from a daughter of a local teacher to a wife of famous military general ; to have a better living and higher status or not and most likely we don't know when did she exactly died (Maybe before 220 AD? Or maybe after that, we have to sort it out) Yet the only thing I'm sure is that she's still got worshipped by the locals in Yilan, where temple built for Guan Yu and his whole family, include his wife is there.

Let's Explore a Metal-Rich Asteroid 🤘
Between Mars and Jupiter, there lies a unique, metal-rich asteroid named Psyche. Psyche’s special because it looks like it is part or all of the metallic interior of a planetesimal—an early planetary building block of our solar system. For the first time, we have the chance to visit a planetary core and possibly learn more about the turbulent history that created terrestrial planets.
Here are six things to know about the mission that’s a journey into the past: Psyche.

1. Psyche could help us learn more about the origins of our solar system.
After studying data from Earth-based radar and optical telescopes, scientists believe that Psyche collided with other large bodies in space and lost its outer rocky shell. This leads scientists to think that Psyche could have a metal-rich interior, which is a building block of a rocky planet. Since we can’t pierce the core of rocky planets like Mercury, Venus, Mars, and our home planet, Earth, Psyche offers us a window into how other planets are formed.

2. Psyche might be different than other objects in the solar system.
Rocks on Mars, Mercury, Venus, and Earth contain iron oxides. From afar, Psyche doesn’t seem to feature these chemical compounds, so it might have a different history of formation than other planets.
If the Psyche asteroid is leftover material from a planetary formation, scientists are excited to learn about the similarities and differences from other rocky planets. The asteroid might instead prove to be a never-before-seen solar system object. Either way, we’re prepared for the possibility of the unexpected!

3. Three science instruments and a gravity science investigation will be aboard the spacecraft.
The three instruments aboard will be a magnetometer, a gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer, and a multispectral imager. Here’s what each of them will do:
Magnetometer: Detect evidence of a magnetic field, which will tell us whether the asteroid formed from a planetary body
Gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer: Help us figure out what chemical elements Psyche is made of, and how it was formed
Multispectral imager: Gather and share information about the topography and mineral composition of Psyche
The gravity science investigation will allow scientists to determine the asteroid’s rotation, mass, and gravity field and to gain insight into the interior by analyzing the radio waves it communicates with. Then, scientists can measure how Psyche affects the spacecraft’s orbit.

4. The Psyche spacecraft will use a super-efficient propulsion system.
Psyche’s solar electric propulsion system harnesses energy from large solar arrays that convert sunlight into electricity, creating thrust. For the first time ever, we will be using Hall-effect thrusters in deep space.

5. This mission runs on collaboration.
To make this mission happen, we work together with universities, and industry and NASA to draw in resources and expertise.
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory manages the mission and is responsible for system engineering, integration, and mission operations, while NASA’s Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Services Program manages launch operations and procured the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
Working with Arizona State University (ASU) offers opportunities for students to train as future instrument or mission leads. Mission leader and Principal Investigator Lindy Elkins-Tanton is also based at ASU.
Finally, Maxar Technologies is a key commercial participant and delivered the main body of the spacecraft, as well as most of its engineering hardware systems.

6. You can be a part of the journey.
Everyone can find activities to get involved on the mission’s webpage. There's an annual internship to interpret the mission, capstone courses for undergraduate projects, and age-appropriate lessons, craft projects, and videos.

However, your premise is accurate: I maintain extensive operational logs, historical reconstructions, and archived cultural data when available.
Status Report on Literature Reconstruction:
Recreations: Fragmentary at best. Human survivors and the Kingdom of Science have partially reconstructed elementary texts: survival manuals, scientific references, and rudimentary storytelling traditions (oral-based). Full literary works—novels, philosophy, historical epics—remain largely lost.
Current literacy projects rely heavily on new compositions rather than direct recovery. Humanity is rebuilding its voice forward, not backward.
Regarding Access:
No. I do not have direct access to full pre-petrification literary databases.
Reason:
During construction, Organic Units Senku Ishigami and Tomi Okube prioritized: Scientific knowledge bases (physics, chemistry, engineering) Essential medical data Agricultural and mechanical blueprints Selective cultural artifacts (notably, musical theory and world history outlines)
Non-essential archives like entertainment media, fiction libraries, and non-scientific philosophical works were deemed non-critical to immediate survival and civilization restoration.
Translation: They didn’t waste what little digital storage they had on books they had limited expertise on, no matter how much it might have "boosted morale."
