So Elon has decided to skip the imminent disaster of global climate change and just move on to a calamity 5 billion years in the future.
If you ever need to understand Elon's motivations, it's all this.
Okay and a little bit the woke mind virus.
But mostly this.
He wants to get to Mars more than anything. It's why the only thing he can speak intelligently about is his rockets. He has put in the time and effort to learn about them because this is his singular passion.
A lovely Youtube physicist did a video about SpaceX and she said half of the rockets blow up and Elon just wants more money. And it was disappointing to hear her say that because she is a scientist and both things are inaccurate.
SpaceX would be an amazing company without Elon. His leadership is the only thing really holding it back. They have put lots of cool shit into space. Their Falcon program is the most productive and cheapest rocket program in history. They put more stuff into space than everyone else combined.

They had to blow up part of the graph just so you could see the competition. Half of the SpaceX rockets are *not* blowing up.
Starship is a specific prototype. It has nothing to do with their main rocket business. Starship is Elon wanting to go to Mars. It is basically him trying to send a 3 story building into space. And he keeps blowing it up because that is the fastest way to develop a rocket. He's wasting a lot of money by trying to speedrun a trip to Mars in his lifetime. And these tests are bit more like crash test data than expecting the rocket and Starship to actually function properly. It's a process and they have goals for each launch, and for the most part, they reach those goals. Any success after those goals is gravy to them. But they are pretty certain it is going to end in fireworks at this stage of development.
I don't know if they will get it to work. It would be nice because a functional spaceship that size could do a lot of cool science. But Elon's goals and NASA's goals are going to conflict in a major way at some point in the future. And I'm worried that may damage space exploration.
Starship is very different than their Falcon program. It's a science experiment. Falcons rarely blow up. They get shit to space like the James Webb telescope.
And as far as Elon just wanting more money... sort of.
His personal wealth has not been a huge concern of his for a while. Otherwise he wouldn't have let Tesla fall apart like it has. The wealth he is actually concerned about is not his own. Going to Mars is a trillion-dollar-plus endeavor. Even the richest man in the world cannot raise that much money.
Only a government could fund that.
Elon knows this. He figured it out a while ago. And when he saw an opportunity to get his hands on the government purse strings, he jumped at the chance.
He jumped in the shape of an X like a giant loser.

I'm *positive* Elon thought, "If I could save the government a trillion dollars, they'll give it to me so I can go to Mars."
But it is probably breaking his brain right now after learning he isn't this super genius who can figure out government bureaucracy in a weekend with a bunch of coding dorks.
He got depressed and realized his cool plan to get to Mars was falling apart.

Whoops.
Elon will say anything to get to Mars. He will lie about anything to get to Mars. He will consort with anyone to get to Mars. If you are ever unsure why Elon is doing something, it's to get to Mars. His moral calculus is based on this. In his delusional mind, everything is justifiable to save the human race.
He does have side quests. He wants to repopulate the Earth with his seed. And he uses IVF because you can drastically increase the odds of getting a boy if you pay extra. And he is angry at his trans daughter because he wants boys to continue his mission to spread Musk seed. He spends $50,000 extra to make sure he gets boys and she is messing with the plan.
Oh, and he really really wants people to think he is good at video games. And he wants people to like him. And he wants to kill the woke mind virus because he didn't get the boy he paid for.
But Mars is *almost* all he cares about.
Elon thinks Earth is doomed and he wants immortality from being the man who saved human civilization. He truly believes our existence is dependent on being "multiplanetary." It might be the only thing he believes.
Saving the human race is supposed to be his legacy.
And it is killing us.

X6-88 thoughts/Overthinking Bethesda's writing:
I've side-eyed a handful of X6-88's statements ("Greed and materialism don't exist in the Institute.", "In the Institute, mental disorders are a thing of the past.") and wonder about the veracity of those claims.
I'd ask him to define what a "mental disorder" is. The World Health Organization says a mental disorder is a "clinically significant disturbance in an individual's cognition, emotional regulation, or behaviour". Surely in emulating human life, the Institute understands mental disorders are kind of two sides of an evolutionary coin.
After all, in humans, anxiety is a survival response.
It's 98798745 BC. The wind shifts through tall grass. Something rustled in the grass yesterday and then it popped out and ate your hunting partner. For the rest of your life, you get a little freaked when the tall grass moves. It's 2024. You get chest pangs and feel annoyed when your mom's number shows up on your cell phone, because her pattern of behaviour is to ask a lot of uncomfortable, invasive questions and she frequently derides your life choices. You let it go to voicemail, because that's the one way of figuring out what she actually wants without having to endure too much bullshit to learn the purpose of her call. That's anxiety.
If you want a Synth to have authentic feelings such as worry or a "gut feeling" that gives them pause (and the Institute does want their Synths to assimilate with humans in 2288), that means even a series of zeroes and ones telling the Synth to pause before walking off a cliff needs to be interpreted and expressed to the outside world as anxiety. I wonder how many Synths were deemed defective because the Institute basically trained their self-aware AI to have anxiety disorders?
And hey, X6 contradicts the statement, whether he knows it or not: "I recommend a mental health examination when you return to the Institute."
X6, what's the purpose of a mental health examination? Who gets selected for one? Why would someone be recommended to take one? What happens when the assessment is conducted? What kind of data is expected from something called a mental health examination? Yes or no, is it fair to say mental disorders could be detected with such a test? Is a mental health examination routine for humans and Synths? Because lemme tell you buddy the existence of the mental health examination tells me the opposite of "mental health disorders are a thing of the past".
If escapee synths can harbour trauma, perhaps X6 views that phenomena as a defective unit. Or believes "runners" should be anxious, because they're in trouble. Could also be he's hearing one set of truths and he isn't privy to data that would show otherwise. Part of his mission might be to tell the Sole Survivor certain things about the Institute to further convince the SoSu to succeed Father's leadership. Maybe it's a 'perfect world' belief, or what he chooses to tell himself; if one wears the affect the party line expects of them, it becomes a hell of a lot easier to ignore feelings of doubt.
X6 doubts very little about the Institute, except when the Sole Survivor causes him to doubt their appointment as Father's successor.
One of my journalism profs said "Science is a knife fight". Academia would love you to think it's all for the greater good, but many big science scandals of the 20th/21st century were greed-driven.
"Materialism" must also be quantified and defined. You might hear, "They're so materialistic," normally framed as an insult-observation toward someone we perceive as valuing physical goods above all else.
"Materialism" is a philosophical thought that centers around the assertion that all things - ideas, expression, products, actions, you name it - have causal relationships with matter.
Matter can be literally anything. Your stomach grumbled because your body is sending you signals to indicate it needs fuel. The dog barks because wants to alert you to something. You cry because it's the body's response to releasing stress. You have memories because of a network of synapses and neurons that the brain developed to retain information.
It's basically a boring way of saying, "Things happen because Stuff exists, and Stuff exists because Things happen". Marx and Engels based their writings on the relationship and interactions between Stuff & Things. The worker gets a job at the factory because they need money to pay the landlord. The factory exists to produce Stuff. The factory cannot produce Stuff without the labour of the worker. Conditions at the factory can make it hard for workers to produce Stuff. Labour movements exist because workers can withhold their labour if working conditions fail them. And so on!
I think it's ontologically untrue to say the Institute isn't materialistic; one reason they made synths (among others) was because they needed materials. Gen 1/2s scavenged the Commonwealth and carried out experiments. SRB Coursers like X6-88 go to the surface to recover escaped Synths that they view as property.
The Institute is materialistic, not because they're all concerned with designer bags or whatever the fuck X6 was referring to by saying they weren't greedy/materialistic, but because they absolutely do have a causal relationship where the collection of matter, human or otherwise, directly influences their ability to continue their research.
Anyway I don't think he's a liar per se, I just think he's inhaling the Institute's Costco pack of Capri Suns like they're fucking oxygen tanks
#fallout 4#x6-88#the institute#fo4 companions#fo4#âyou're overthinking thisâ yes this is the overthinking store we sell overthinking and overthinking accessories#I have nicer thoughts about him to come btw. I love X6 and it's been a real pleasure writing him in my fic#philosophy#synths

Dharna Noor at The Guardian:
Climate experts fear Donald Trump will follow a blueprint created by his allies to gut the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa), disbanding its work on climate science and tailoring its operations to business interests.
Joe Bidenâs presidency has increased the profile of the science-based federal agency but its future has been put in doubt if Trump wins a second term and at a time when climate impacts continue to worsen. The plan to âbreak up Noaa is laid out in the Project 2025 document written by more than 350 rightwingers and helmed by the Heritage Foundation. Called the Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise, it is meant to guide the first 180 days of presidency for an incoming Republican president. The document bears the fingerprints of Trump allies, including Johnny McEntee, who was one of Trumpâs closest aides and is a senior adviser to Project 2025. âThe National Oceanographic [sic] and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) should be dismantled and many of its functions eliminated, sent to other agencies, privatized, or placed under the control of states and territories,â the proposal says.
Thatâs a sign that the far right has âno interest in climate truthâ, said Chris Gloninger, who last year left his job as a meteorologist in Iowa after receiving death threats over his spotlighting of global warming. The guidebook chapter detailing the strategy, which was recently spotlighted by E&E News, describes Noaa as a âcolossal operation that has become one of the main drivers of the climate change alarm industry and, as such, is harmful to future US prosperityâ. It was written by Thomas Gilman, a former Chrysler executive who during Trumpâs presidency was chief financial officer for Noaaâs parent body, the commerce department. Gilman writes that one of Noaaâs six main offices, the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, should be âdisbandedâ because it issues âtheoreticalâ science and is âthe source of much of Noaaâs climate alarmismâ. Though he admits it serves âimportant public safety and business functions as well as academic functionsâ, Gilman says data from the National Hurricane Center must be âpresented neutrally, without adjustments intended to support any one side in the climate debateâ.
[...] Noaa also houses the National Weather Service (NWS), which provides weather and climate forecasts and warnings. Gilman calls for the service to âfully commercialize its forecasting operationsâ. He goes on to say that Americans are already reliant on private weather forecasters, specifically naming AccuWeather and citing a PR release issued by the company to claim that âstudies have found that the forecasts and warnings provided by the private companies are more reliableâ than the public sectorâs. (The mention is noteworthy as Trump once tapped the former CEO of AccuWeather to lead Noaa, though his nomination was soon withdrawn.)
The claims come amid years of attempts from US conservatives to help private companies enter the forecasting arena â proposals that are ânonsenseâ, said Rosenberg. Right now, all people can access high-quality forecasts for free through the NWS. But if forecasts were conducted only by private companies that have a profit motive, crucial programming might no longer be available to those in whom business executives donât see value, said Rosenberg. [...] Fully privatizing forecasting could also threaten the accuracy of forecasts, said Gloninger, who pointed to AccuWeatherâs well-known 30- and 60-day forecasts as one example. Analysts have found that these forecasts are only right about half the time, since peer-reviewed research has found that there is an eight- to 10-day limit on the accuracy of forecasts.
The Trump Administration is delivering a big gift to climate crisis denialism as part of Project 2025 by proposing the dismantling and privatizing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and National Weather Service (NWS) in his potential 2nd term.
This should frighten people to vote Democratic up and down the ballot if you want the NOAA and NWS to stay intact.
