Everybody’s a criminal. This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, we talk to Luke Gearing and David Hoskins, the creative team behind the new RPG Swyvers, from Melsonian Arts Council. In a fictionalized, horrible sort of fantasy London full of corruption and wild magic, the only way to get yours is to take it from somebody else. Rules light, with a focus on collaborative play fueled by novel mechanics and decorated in an amazing portfolio of art by Hoskins, Swyvers is gonna knock your socks off (and steal your wallet while you’re lying there). On Kickstarter now, go back it. Or else.

As a huge fan of the series, I personally like to think and believe that when it comes to HBO's Tales From The Crypt, all of the following episodes you'll see and read below are set in the same universe as each other as they're all connected in the fact that each of them are incredibly stylized and very, very, VERY dark as shit even when it seems like they're more tongue-in-cheek or comedic, they go dark fast:
Tumblr media
• The Man Who Was Death
• And All Through The House
• Dig That Cat... He's Real Gone
• Only Sin Deep
• Lover Come Hack To Me
• The Thing From The Grave
• For Cryin' Out Loud
• Four-Sided Triangle
• Judy, You're Not Yourself Today
• Fitting Punishment
• Lower Berth
• Mute Witness To Murder
• Television Terror
• Abra Cadaver
• Top Billing
• Easel Kill Ya
• Deadline
• Yellow
• None But The Lonely Heart
• On A Deadman's Chest
• What's Cookin'
• The New Arrival
• Showdown
• King Of The Road
• Maniac At Large
• Split Personality
• Strung Along
• Death Of Some Salesman
• Forever Ambergris
• People Who Live In Brass Hearses
• Two For The Show
• Well Cooked Hams
• Came The Dawn
• Half-Way Horrible
• Till Death Do We Part
• Only Skin Deep
• The Assassin
• Staired In Horror
• Surprise Party

• Fatal Caper
• Escape
• Horror In The Night
• Cold War
• The Kidnapper
• Report From The Grave
• About Face
and last but DEFINITELY not least,
• Confession

Furthermore, we could take it just a little step further and maybe have the Cryptkeeper be somehow secretly responsible for the events in all of them.

Doomsday (2008)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
Doomsday is a major step down for director Neil Marshall, who previously brought us Dog Soldiers and The Descent. Derivative of Mad Max, Escape from New York and 28 Days Later, you can’t watch Doomsday without thinking of Alien vs. Predator: Requiem. Both are films made by fans who tried so hard to be cool, became so obsessed with winking and nodding towards the audience they forgot to be good.
In 2008, the “Reaper Virus” ravages Scotland. In a desperate attempt to contain the epidemic, the British government constructs a giant wall to isolate its population. 30 years later, the virus resurfaces. Hoping to find a cure within the pariah state, the British Government sends Major Eden Sinclair (Rhona Mitra) and a team of special operatives inside the no man’s land, not realizing the walls now contain a thriving civilization gone completely mad.
If I were to give this film one piece of advice, it’d be "Take a step back, stop thinking about all of the references it can fit in and take a cold, hard look at yourself." This film wants to have it every way and winds up making no sense. We’re told Scotland has been completely devastated by the Reaper Virus. For nearly 30 years, the whole world believed there were no survivors beyond the walls. When Sinclair and her team enter, they find hundreds of tattooed, Mohawk-donned lunatics driving supped-up cars. Which one is it? Is Scotland a wasteland devoid of life, or teeming with Road Warrior knockoffs? It's doubly hard to believe no one noticed when you see the maniacs have access to electricity.
After several references to the directors of Mad Max and Escape from New York (Chris Robson plays a character named Miller to match Leslie Simpson’s character, Carpenter), Doomsday takes a detour. Halfway through, it becomes a medieval gladiator film with the castle-ruling Marcus Kane (Malcolm McDowell) and his chainmail, horse-riding cronies at war with the cannibalisitic loonies armed with chainsaws on a fully-functional convoy. How is it the guys with swords and shield haven’t been wiped out? Come to think of it, why are Sol (Craig Conway) and his followers eating people, rather than all the horses and cows we see?
It may sound like I’m nitpicking the film into oblivion, but it can't be helped. As soon as you seen David O’Hara as a senior British official, you know he’s going to turn out evil. I’ll do you one better, once the film throws in its Snake Plisken reference and reveals to us that Sinclair has a cybernetic eye in her right socket, you know EXACTLY how the picture will conclude. All you can do to stay entertained is pick apart the story while waiting for it to run its course.
At least Doomsday features decent action sequences when Sinclair is on the road. The gore featured is over-the-top and you’ll be pulled out of the film thanks to the unrealistic feats by both people and vehicles, but they remain entertaining nonetheless. At least when you can tell what is happening. The hand-to-hand combat is cut so frenetically you can hardly tell what’s what.
Doomsday is a ridiculous film too obsessed with showering praise upon the works that inspired it to think about standing on its own. Its brazen displays of gore and violence distract for a moment, but in no time, you'll realize how flat and uninteresting this world and its characters are. It’s predictable and a pale imitator destined to be forgotten. (Full-screen Unrated version on DVD, April 28, 2018)

Some occult-focused zines this week. First up, Svmmoning Sickness (2014), by that scamp David Hoskins.
This isn’t RPG-related at all, though several RPG books are listed as inspiration. Rather, it is primarily a vehicle for Hoskins’ excellent art. We’ve got witches and demons and black masses, a hand of glory, a selection of flowers for spell components. While the illustrations are ominous and lurid, the text plays it straight, giving the facts of the selected topics in un-sensationalized prose. It rather reminds me of a Daniel Cohen book, just in zine form, with original art and more nudity. Which means it is awesome, pretty much.
My understanding is that these were printed in a small edition and the one Hoskins sent me was the last copy he had on hand. I bet y’all could convince him to reprint it, though [spoilers: Max Moon Games did earlier this year]! Or put out a second volume — this one is labeled volume 1, implying plans to do follow-ups. Where’s my fully illustrated Goetia, David?!

Serves Us Right
WAITRESS Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton, Tuesday 28th June 2022 The last musical I saw that was based around pie-making was Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd.  This show has a completely different flavour.  Based on a film from 2005, this hit musical is on the road at last.  It’s the story of Jenna (Chelsea Halfpenny) who is not only the titular waitress but also something of a master baker.  Her pie is…
