i'm committed to not getting involved in any ship discourse,

but here are a few things i want to point out:

maximus is the main character along with cooper and lucy. his leading role doesn't depend on his romance with lucy. to say that we must ship max with lucy or else we'd be "erasing" him is to reduce maximus to a love interest.

no one says max is boring. people say that max and lucy's romance is bland and not necessarily engaging as a romance. but we don't want an exciting dynamic only for lucy, we want an exciting dynamic for max as well. that is why a lot of people ship max with dane.

max x dane is a great and rare rep, especially in scifi. as an enby myself, i was pleasantly surprised by fallout having an enby character and i hope that dane's role will expand in s2. the show giving the enby character a romantic dynamic with the main would mean a lot to me personally, tbh.

fallout is not a pure morality manual. it's the freaky series for the freaks. if people shipping lucy with the ghoul makes you uncomfortable, then maybe you shouldn't be watching such a show to begin with. there is plenty of puritan-friendly content out there for you.

lastly, this is for the vaultghoul shippers. again, believe me as i'm speaking from my and many others' experience, engaging with the antis is a futile business, you'd be giving them what they want. just block them on sight. don't pay any mind to their bs and just engage with your side of the fandom. that will ensure your experience there being fun and pleasant and also the general/casual fans not finding you annoying.

Seeing a lot of comparisons between vaultghoul and reylo and:

Listen, ship your ships; that's the tumblr way, and I'm not here to judge you

But for me, that's bullshit.

I personally checked out of the star wars films when it was clear finnrey was being shelved in favor of reylo

Because finnrey had the chemistry, and I could feel that reylo was being forced. I could tell from the writing. I could tell from the acting. I could tell from the interviews.

Such is not the case with vaultghoul. Is it a slightly fucked up ship? Yeah, but we're all freaks here.

The chemistry is there. It was there from the jump. It's easily perceived in every scene, and none of it feels forced.

That doesn't mean vaultknight doesn't fit; their smiles are sunshine. Their heart-eyes are sweet as apple pie. I'm not mad about it, but the chemistry just doesn't quite seep through the screen as easily.

Instead, I found myself yelling "DO YOU NOT SEE THE WAY THEY'RE LOOKING AT YOU?" every time Max had a scene with Dane.

This is a ramble, but what I'm saying is: chemistry in media is a thing, and everyone perceives it differently. I didn't get reylo. And I don't see vaultghoul as a second-coming of that ship.

It's its own thing, in its own fucked up little way. And it's fun.

In regards to Cooper vs. Maximus as Lucy's endgame-I think Lucy x Max is an idealized type of crush for both of them: he is the nicest surface-dweller to her and first conventionally hot, same-age guy since her dead ex-husband (but nicer, so far, by her world's standards) but Cooper x Lucy is more unexpected since he's older, he's a ghoul, and they're not insta-buddies like her and Max.

But if there really is a "love triangle" planned, then I think Max is the Romantic False Lead trope especially since Lucy x Max became canon in the first season whereas Lucy x Cooper has more of a slow-burn potential, plus more natural chemistry between the actors than Lucy x Max does.

i'm very hesitant to make any predictions regarding the character/relationship development in the future season(s) of fallout.

i think the fact that they made lucy x max jump on a romance wagon so quickly might mean that something must change in the future. right now we know that they are taking two different paths.

i expect max and dane's dynamic to be developed more and that could be very intriguing. max is an interesting character with a lot of potential, but i don't think this potential can be explored if he stays with lucy bc that way he will remain a knight in a singing armour.

and obviously lucy and the ghoul are going to have a special relationship. lucy will discover her non-brainwashed self as well.

i don't think there will be a love triangle. either the series will show us lucy and max growing apart, or rather "growing out" of each other, and closer to the other people, or they might get together at the very end.

it's just that they framed lucy and max separation in a way that makes the viewers think that surely they will get back together very quickly and they will get together as the same people they were when they separated, but i think it's a red herring and the two will meet again as the very different people. alexa play "somebody that i used to know" by gotye.

also, i think max and lucy have a nice chemistry, but it's not s*xually charged chemistry. and some ppl need to stop claiming that we say that bc we think max is boring. he isn't. but BOTH lucy AND max have a more engaging dynamic with the ghoul and dane respectively. i think it's bc lucy and max are aggressively hetero-framed, if that makes sense.

i mean, max x his simp enby comrade and lucy x the literal 200 years old ghoul who sees her as his mirror both sound more fun, imo.

Modern College AU for Fallout 2024

Cooper is a retired actor turned professor (I imagine he teaches acting and script writing classes) he swore to himself up and down that he would never get involved with one of his students but Lucy is slowly whittling that rule of his down, one day at a time.

Lucy is there to get a degree in education and minoring in political science. She took Cooper's class because her and her dad are huge fans and totally not because she wants to just be able to sit and stare at a pretty face for an hour a few times a week

Max is doing general studies. He's not quite sure what he wants to do, he's bounced from diesel mechanics and engineering to librarian sciences and botany. He accidentally enters the wrong class one day (Cooper's class) and sees Lucy and then decides he has to switch classes immediately. He wants to get to know Lucy better and they hit it off right away. He isn't super into the course subject, but it's decently easy and he gets to hang out with Lucy so he doesn't mind it.

Dane is in the same boat as Max. They don't know what they want to do, but they feel less alone because of Max. They notice that Max changed one of his classes and follows him one day, now Dane is attending the class twice a week along with Max and Lucy. They share a dorm with Max.

Norm would honestly drop out if it wasn't for the pressure his father is putting on him. He's in his first year of college and is already over it. He decided on computer science and although he's good at it, he's also bored with it. Thinks it's funny how Lucy is taking Cooper Howard's class and can see her teacher crush a mile away.
