Ok no, I have to get it out of my system, Conrad is bad at podcasting. And just recording anything in general.

The sound padding is doing absolutely nothing. Sure, they’ve got it slapped on the walls, but it’s off to the side. Not behind them. Not in front of them. Just... chilling. Which is useless. You want that padding facing the source of the sound so it can catch the waves before they start bouncing all over the place.
Since both Ruby and Conrad are facing forward with the padding off to the side, her voice is bouncing off the wall behind him and hitting his mic again a split second later. That would be making the audio sound muddy and hollow. Having the foam off to the side like that is like putting a bandage next to your cut and wondering why you’re still bleeding.
Right now, the foam is just there for vibes. Bad vibes.
And who told this man to record in a glass box? Glass is terrible for audio. Everything bounces. Nothing gets absorbed. It turns your voice into a pinball machine. You could have a thousand-dollar mic and it would still sound like you’re talking inside a fishbowl. Plus, that room looks like it’s in the middle of an office space? Why, Conrad, you amoeba-brained sycophant, would you record anything there ever?? The background noise alone would be hell on Earth to try to edit out.

Pop filter and foam windscreen (mic cover)??? Both are designed to reduce plosive sounds—like "p" and "b"—by dispersing the air before it hits the microphone diaphragm. While it’s not wrong to use both, it’s redundant unless you're outdoors or in a particularly plosive-heavy environment. Stacking them can even dull the audio a bit.
Your mic doesn’t need two hats. Calm down.

Not an audio note but a soft box light in the shot?? No. Just no. They should be behind the camera, pointing at you. Or at least off to the side, not pointing directly down the middle. And what really gets me? There are windows. Real, working windows with actual sunlight. And what did Conrad do? He covered them with that useless sound padding. So now it’s badly lit and echoey.
He blocked out free, natural light to keep in the bad sound.
"But what if the sun’s there right when he’s trying to record?" some might say. That’s why curtains exist. And the soft box would still be in a bad spot.

Also, his camera audio is peaking like crazy. Even if he's not using the camera mic for the final cut, it’s still useless to record it like this. You know that Xbox early Halo/COD mic sound? That’s what this would sound like.
This happens when the input gain is too high, causing the audio to clip. Basically, the mic can’t handle it and the sound gets distorted. Ideally, you want your audio levels to peak in the yellow zone, around -12 dB to -6 dB. Not constantly slamming into the red at 0 dB. That’s reserved for 13-year-old prepubescents cursing you out for ruining their kill streak. And that’s it.
On top of that, both the left and right channels on the camera audio look identical, meaning the audio’s been merged into a single mono track. Which isn’t wrong for speech, but it kills any sense of space or direction. For dynamic audio, especially in a two-person setup, you don’t want everything crammed into one lane. (OR they’re both just peaking at the same time continuously, even when they’re not talking, which means it’s picking up background noise at a level so loud it’s pushing the mic into clipping.)

And to make things worse, the little "LIVE" tag in the bottom corner implies this is a livestream. But there doesn’t seem to be any livestream software open on his laptop, so I’m assuming there’s either a second offscreen computer handling the stream, or it’s hooked up to broadcast natively.
Either way, unless those mics are also connected to the camera or that other computer, that peaky, crunchy camera audio is what people are actually hearing.

🤔🔊 How much volume can a Gallifreyan tolerate?
When it comes to sound, humans have limits. Loud concerts, sirens, and heavy machinery are all pretty intolerable for long periods. But what about Gallifreyans? With their enhanced hearing, how much noise can they actually tolerate?
Gallifreyans can probably comfortably endure up to 190 decibels (dB), which is incredibly loud. To put that into perspective, here's how that compares to some Earth sounds:
Rock concert: ~90-120dB
Threshold of pain for most humans: around 140dB
Jet engine at takeoff: ~140dB
Rocket launch: ~180dB
Potential instant human death through organ rupture: 170-200dB
Sperm whale: ~230dB
The loudest sound ever recorded (Krakatoa volcanic eruption): 310db
So how loud does it have to be before it could cause them pain, or instantly kill them? These are unknowns, but reason tells us they could likely handle volumes upwards of 200-210 dB without suffering immediate harm, although even they would eventually experience pain or severe distress above that level. Anything above 250dB is probably fatal.
So next time a Time Lord invites you to a Gallifreyan rock concert, just be aware it'll be so loud that it'll probably kill you.

It seems that the BPA-1 Buffer Pre-Amp was the first of 3 plug-in effects produced by AXE (at least from what the 1982 catalogue would indicate). Here's what said manual/catalogue tells us: -Super boost your signal up to 20 dB -Adds punch and highs lost when using effects devices -Direct instrument plug-in eliminates cord loading -Signal is ALWAYS buffered at all gains -Battery life in excess of 1000 hours AXE's Buffer Pre-Amp eliminates the loss of signal level and punch when using effects devices or driving long cords. How do you think Theon Greyjoy would have fared at the Archery contest during the Hand’s Tourney in AGOT?

As mentioned in a similar ask about Sarella, Anguy won that contest by outshooting “Ser Balon Swann and Jalabhar Xho at a hundred paces after all the other bowmen had been eliminated at the shorter distances,” (AGOT, Eddard 7) which can be estimated at about 250 feet. Has Theon ever been shown to shoot that far, and (if not), can we estimate his maximum range from known cases? (No, of course I wouldn’t just say “pretty well” or “not great” based on reputation).
Right off the bat, Theon has a few more instances of shooting arrows than Sarella (who just has the one scene in the AFFC Prologue) mentioning that he’s been practicing archery under Dagmer Cleftjaw (so before the age of 9) and had pretty good accuracy even then (saying he put an arrow through a “seagull on the wing” in ACOK Theon 3). Tyrion, a complete stranger, vaguely remembers Theon being “good with a bow” (ACOK Tyrion XI), and it sounds like he was one of the archers who shot down the Frey ravens (AGOT Catelyn IX) among Brynden Tully’s men. However, I’ve found two instances of Theon shooting arrows where we can roughly estimate the distance (if anybody has found other cases, please point them out).
Drunk, Theon decided, watching [Todric] bellow. It was said that the ironmen of old had oft been blood-drunk in battle, so berserk that they felt no pain and feared no foe, but this was a common ale-drunk. "Wex, my bow and quiver." The boy ran and fetched them. Theon bent the bow and slipped the string into its notches as Todric knocked down the Botley boy and flung ale into his eyes. Fishwhiskers leapt up cursing, but Theon was quicker. He drew on the hand that clutched the drinking horn, figuring to give them a shot to talk about, but Todric spoiled it by lurching to one side just as he loosed. The arrow took him through the belly. The looters stopped to gape. Theon lowered his bow. "No drunkards, I said, and no squabbles over plunder." On his knees, Todric was dying noisily. "Botley, silence him." Fishwhiskers and his sons were quick to obey. They slit Todric's throat as he kicked feebly, and were stripping him of cloak and rings and weapons before he was even dead. —ACOK Theon III
Theon intends to shoot at Todric’s drinking horn but shoots him in the belly instead due to sudden movement, so he’s close enough to see fairly small objects. He’s also able to make himself heard to the people next to Todric without it being mentioned that he had to move closer or raise his voice. A normal conversational voice is 60 decibels (dB). Sound pressure level normally halves (by six decibels) for each doubling of distance, meaning the distance between Theon and Todric at the point of shooting was about 40 feet.
The other instance is when Theon, carrying a longbow and with long razor-tipped broadhead arrows, shoots Stiv when he holds a dagger at Bran’s throat:
A low thrum came from the woods behind them. Stiv gave a choked gasp as a half foot of razor-tipped broadhead suddenly exploded out of his chest. The arrow was bright red, as if it had been painted in blood. The dagger fell away from Bran's throat. The big man swayed and collapsed, facedown in the stream. —AGOT Bran V
Bran is able to hear (though quietly) Theon shoot the arrow before it makes impact with Stiv’s chest. This is fairly significant because at shorter distances, Bran wouldn’t have been able to detect the arrow’s shooting and impact as separate events, and it’s estimated that humans can separate sounds as little as 20-30 milliseconds apart. Since sound travels 343 m/s through air, that puts the minimum distance of Theon from Stiv at 6.86m or 20.6 feet. However, that doesn’t take into account how loud the thrum of Theon’s bow is. It may be surprising that longbows are actually one of the quietest bows (the recurve is louder, and the crossbow the loudest) and the larger arrows like broadheads make quieter noises when shot, because the energy the bowstring would’ve made slapping the wood is transferred into hurling the arrow. According to this thread, the longbow firing could be around 74dB or over 10 times louder than normal conversation, about as loud as a vacuum cleaner. Using the same formula for sound over distance as in the Todric example, 74dB can be heard from about 90 feet away, meaning the distance between Stiv and Theon was between 20 and 90 feet (though admittedly, definitely closer to 90, maybe about 85 feet).
That’s about all I can estimate about Theon’s maximum archery distance; it’s less than 100 feet, far less than Anguy’s winning distance of 250 feet. It seems his archery talent is more in his accuracy at hitting small (sometimes moving) targets at somewhat “close” distances rather than hitting larger stationary targets at very far distances (maybe significant foreshadowing for his role in protecting the Starks in TWOW?) Meanwhile, the Hand’s Archery Contest in AGOT was based on who could hit archery butts from the farthest pace away, which is definitely not Theon’s strong point if my textual analysis means anything. Just based on what I can determine about sound distance from two more detailed scenarios of his shooting, Theon would probably make it to the early-middle rounds of the Hand’s Archery Contest and get eliminated by 40 paces/100 feet from the targets, (and probably insult all the men who got further than he did and mock the idea of Ned getting a tourney in general to make himself feel better about losing so soon).

hello and good day sir bug! i am considering making a podfic of one of my fics, and i was wondering if u as a podfic veteran have any tips?
oh, sure! let’s see.
1. audacity is the best and easiest audio editing software i’ve ever used. highly recommend.
2. it seems like a good idea to use the “silence audio” option to get rid of bumps and breaths in between sentences but what i’ve found is that it’s less jarring to the listener to instead replace that mistake audio with the ambient hum of wherever you’re recording. specifically wherever you’re recording btw, otherwise it can sound a little off.
3. if you’d like to spend the time, highlight parts of the fic, different characters lines, to cue you to read them differently from the narration, just to keep your flow. or hell, you could reformat the whole fic as a script. have fun with it.
4. depending on how thorough your editing is, it can take longer, but know that it’s probably always going to take at least 3 times as long to edit your audio as it did to record it. that’s part of the process. and it can be a slog sometimes, but it’s worth it!
5. oh! noise removal! best tool in your kit! you select a space of audio where you aren’t speaking, get a sample, and then apply that removal to the whole audio. it’ll help quiet down the background noise. you can run it a twice to get it real low, depending on where you’re recording. second best tools in your kit are the compressor/normalization tools. compressor will even out your audio peaks and such so everything is about the same volume level or close to it, and then the normalization will raise the whole clip to whatever audio level you like. I’ve been setting mine to about -3 dB.

Even if he doesn't care and doesn't listen to your excitement, you share ideas and headcanons with him (when Shin isn't around and he's busy with his work lol) Whis comes next time - you already have a new interest and the dude will probably have to be distracted for a second to find out the meaning of your interest and study the characters to get the gist of your thoughts

If you wanted Whis to engage with you at all, you had to bribe him.

Whis gracefully accepted it with a hum of approval, taking a delicate bite before offering his own half-hearted input.

“Great, now listen to this—” You leaned forward, eyes gleaming. “So, I’ve been obsessed with this one series lately. It’s about an intergalactic war, except the two main enemies have the most ridiculous tension. Like, if they stopped trying to kill each other for five seconds, they’d totally be—”
Whis nodded along, making an encouraging noise between bites. He was not listening.
Second: Persistence.
The next time he stopped by (again, not for you, just for a new dessert you promised), you had already moved on to a new obsession.
Before he could even take a sip of his tea, you ambushed him.
“Okay, so forget the space war. I have a new fixation. This one is about—”
A brief flicker of interest crossed his face.
“Did the other obsession not satisfy you?”
You squinted at him. “Wait. Did you actually look up the last one?”
Whis smiled, taking a slow sip of tea.
“Perhaps.”
Your jaw dropped.
Third: Success.
The cycle continued.
