How to Start an EV Charging Business in India: Profitability and Guide
Tumblr media
As the world moves towards sustainable energy solutions, electric vehicles (EVs) have emerged as a promising alternative to conventional petrol and diesel-powered cars. India, with its ambitious electric mobility goals, presents a lucrative opportunity for entrepreneurs looking to venture into the EV charging business. In this blog, we will explore the process of starting an EV charging station in India, the associated costs, and the profitability of such a business.
The Growing Demand for EV Charging Stations in India
India's rapid urbanization and increasing environmental consciousness have driven the adoption of electric vehicles across the country. With the government's push towards EV adoption through various incentives and policy measures, the demand for charging infrastructure is on the rise.
According to recent reports, India's EV market is expected to witness exponential growth in the coming years, resulting in a substantial increase in the number of EVs on the roads. This surge in EV ownership creates a pressing need for more charging stations throughout the country.
Understanding the Cost Involved
The cost of setting up an EV charging station in India can vary depending on several factors, including the location, type of charging station, and the number of charging points. Here are some key expenses to consider:
Infrastructure Costs: This includes the purchase or lease of the property where the charging station will be installed. Locations near shopping centers, office complexes, and residential areas are usually preferred for higher footfall.
Charging Equipment: The cost of the charging equipment, such as AC chargers, DC fast chargers, and related hardware, is a significant part of the investment. The number and type of charging points will impact the overall expenses.
Installation and Electrical Work: Setting up the charging station requires electrical work, including wiring, transformers, and metering equipment, which can add to the cost.
Operational and Maintenance Expenses: Regular maintenance and operational costs, including electricity tariffs, internet connectivity, and support staff, must be factored in.
Steps to Start an EV Charging Business in India
Step 1: Research and Feasibility Analysis
Conduct thorough market research to identify high-demand locations and understand the competition. Assess the feasibility of your charging station project based on the local EV population and government incentives.
Step 2: Business Model and Permits
Choose a suitable business model, such as pay-per-use, subscription-based, or a mix of both. Obtain the necessary permits and licenses from local authorities and power distribution companies.
Step 3: Infrastructure Setup
Acquire a suitable location with sufficient parking space and proximity to EV-heavy areas. Install the charging equipment with the help of experienced technicians.
Step 4: Marketing and Promotion
Create awareness about your charging station through online and offline marketing channels. Collaborate with EV manufacturers and dealers to promote your charging station.
Profitability of EV Charging Business in India
While the initial investment in setting up an EV charging station can be substantial, the business holds promising long-term prospects. As the EV market grows, the demand for charging infrastructure will escalate, ensuring a steady stream of customers.
Moreover, the government's support in the form of subsidies and incentives for the EV charging industry further enhances its profitability potential. By offering competitive pricing, excellent customer service, and strategically locating your charging stations, you can attract a loyal customer base and generate a positive return on investment over time.
Conclusion
Starting an EV charging business in India can be a rewarding venture, both financially and environmentally. With the government's focus on promoting sustainable transportation, the demand for EV charging stations is set to soar. By carefully assessing the costs, choosing strategic locations, and delivering top-notch services, entrepreneurs can capitalize on this emerging market and contribute to a greener future. What is the future of EV charging stations in India?
Tumblr media
What is an EV charging station?
EVs, or electric vehicle charging stations, are referred to as a kind of charging station that provides equipment equipped with the electrical power required for charging electric vehicles. EV charging stations link electronic vehicles to the charger. The number of these charging stations has gradually increased in the past few years. It is seen that the number of electric vehicles has increased over time. Not only 2 wheelers but also 3 wheelers and 4 wheelers, as well as passenger vehicles, have somewhat increased. According to the Road Transport and Highways Minister, the number of EVs will be equal to the number of gasoline vehicles in the long run. Keeping this in mind, the number of electric vehicle charge stations will expand. People have been looking for outdoor EV charger installation solutions.
With the increase shown in 2022, it is expected that the upcoming years will see more development in this field, eventually growing in the next few years. Along with the existing EV charging station contractors and service providers, government firms and other construction dealers will also play a part in the rise of electric vehicle charging stations in the country.
There are many types of chargers, like AC and DC, which are alternating current and direct current, respectively, that are commonly used.
As per the report by the Indian Venture and Alternate Capital Association (IVCA), the charging stations, EY and Induslaw, are anticipated to grow by the year 2027. By 2030, India might require around 20 lakh charging stations to serve around 5 crore electric vehicles.
The electric vehicle charging stations will provide service for two types of EVs: one with the plug-in ability and one with the option of swappable batteries. Swapping batteries is mostly preferred by two-wheelers and three-wheelers, and the plug-in option is used by four-wheelers. Swappable battery stations are much more inexpensive, and they ease the charging time. Ordinarily, the batteries last for around 10 to 20 years if used effectively, but it can affect the lifespan of the batteries. Preventing charging the batteries at level 3 will reduce the risk, as the charging process is swift at level 3. This was noticed by the two-wheeler EV charging contractors.
In addition to the existing slow charging option, which is alternating current, or AC, EV charging solution contractors and specialist companies will come up with new, fast charging options like direct current, or DC. These facilities will not only be made available to the people living in the metropolitan cities along express highways and highways but also in places like Tier 2 and Tier 3 in the country.
They are available in public places like petrol pumps, commercial premises, and municipal parking places, they are also available in private sectors like offices and residential places.
To conclude, EV charging stations have a great future in the Country.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, India has more than 1.3 million EVs on the road as of August 2022. The sale of EVs this year has gone up over three times as compared to the sales in FY 2020-21. The GoaI is targeting to achieve EV sales penetration of 30% for private cars, 70% for commercial vehicles and 80% for two and three-wheelers by 2030. To achieve this, India needs safe, smart and affordable EV charging solutions for home. The presence of safe EV chargers at home not only provides users with the convenience of charging their EVs but also boosts confidence among people who are considering purchasing it. According to reports, more than 80% of EV owners charge their vehicles at home due to the convenience and low cost of residential charging. Most EVs come with an on-board charger which allows users to directly plug their vehicles into a standard 15A charging socket. However, apart from being slow and least energy efficient, these sockets do not offer any direct safety or monitoring features and are not recommended for long term EV charging. Unsafe charging at home using a standard 15A socket can result in sudden power surges which can damage the EV battery. News reports of EV batteries bursting into fire and creating blazes in India have been mostly due to the owner not knowing how to charge a battery safely. Additionally, EV users also face challenges with power theft, access control and unidentified energy consumption in shared parking spaces. BOLT LITE has been designed to address all the issues arising from ineffective home charging and provides EV consumers with a safe and affordable solution to charge their EVs. BOLT LITE is compatible with two, three and four wheel EVs and requires no additional infrastructure and can be installed in under 30 minutes with little to no maintenance. It offers dual-layer of protection with an in-built MCB that automatically switches off electrical circuits during any abnormal condition in the electrical network such as overload and short circuit conditions. Furthermore, the smart energy meter provides bifurcation for energy consumed by the BOLT LITE charging socket vs. the power supply of the home via the BOLT app. BOLT LITE is IP65 certified and therefore provides complete protection from dust, oil, water and other non-corrosive material and can endure all weather conditions. Not only does BOLT LITE give an efficient power transfer, users also get faster charging to help ensure their EV is fully charged overnight. BOLT LITE is India's first smart charging socket that is IoT-enabled and helps connect EV users across the country. It comes with an energy calculator to monitor the power consumption and gives the user access to a lifetime of passive income. Owners can choose to switch the device status between 'Public' and 'Private', where 'Public' charging sockets are open to the public and are available for booking on the BOLT app. The charging sockets marked as 'Private' are exclusively for the use of device owners. Furthermore, BOLT LITE can be operated with or without the BOLT app and supports both Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and WiFi communication. When set to private mode, BOLT LITE does not require the internet or the BOLT app to be operated. Consumers can place an order for BOLT LITE via the BOLT website, any of the channel partners or dealers/distributors. BOLT has partnered with more than 25 OEMs globally, including 7 out of the top 10 OEMs in India to build a safe, smart and connected ecosystem for electric vehicles. Read the full article

The future of transportation is approaching a turning point as now people are switching to EVs as they are the solution for increased fuel prices and environmental issues. The EV industry needs to cover a long distance to gain momentum. With Indian firms entering into the field of EV production processes, it appears that electric vehicles will gain popularity in the coming years and the increasing industrial involvement of businesses is proof of this. Why has EV uptake been so slow? EV growth has been recorded low in the recent years at around 0.8 percent, notwithstanding the debut of devices by existing OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and younger entrants. Two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers account for 17 percent, 79 percent, and 4 percent of total EVs in India. Dimensions to examine the shortcomings. 1. Insufficient Product Development One of several main reasons for the slow production of electric vehicles is the lack of developmental facilities. Most businesses have failed to highlight the utilization of EVs. The other reason for Ev's failed success is that EVs have failed to prove the facts stated by EV companies about the usability of their products. The absence of battery storage and lack of production facilities is why EV industries haven't gained that much momentum yet. Nevertheless, although it is one of the variables influencing EV adoption, the cost is not an essential factor. 2. Budgetary constraints As compared to combustion engine cars, EVs are marketed at a 20% and 50% markup for two-wheelers and four-wheelers. This initial cost is unfavourable to Indian buyers who'd rather have a less expensive IC automobile. The price differential grows in tandem with the vehicle's capacity. Poor infrastructure for recharging and switching The fact that there are some infrastructural issues present is not surprising. In India, we have about 2,000 public fast chargers to charge around 6 million EVs. The lack of charging facilities is making the usage impossible and due to this a severe infrastructural backlog has developed due to a lack of cell and charging standardisation, as well as the high capital cost of establishing recharging or exchanging facilities. Is there a positive outlook? Ola Electric delivered e-scooters valued at 11,000 crore rupees in India just two days after their sales started in September 2021. This corresponds to around 85,000 e-scooters sold at a cost of around 1.3 lakh per vehicle. When compared to the overall types of electric cars on the road, which is around six million, this is a significant figure for just a couple of days' worth of sales— indicating a change in customer behaviour and a growing preference for electric cars. The potential of electromobility is here, with traditional businesses catching up and innovative entrepreneurs emerging, opening the door for a slew of new technologies. The time has come for the ecological community to join on board with electric vehicles to accelerate their broad acceptance. Advancement in research and development will be more important than establishing recharging and exchanging facilities. In conclusion Although four-wheelers have had some ground to make up to do in respect of initial pricing and cost of production, two-wheelers will be the catalyst for mass acceptance. Although there are obstacles in terms of infrastructure and consumption, the potential of electromobility in India is bright, and it is promising a more integrated, ecological, and sophisticated transportation environment.
Glad to see you here!!
