Eivind Aarset /Jan Bang: Nightspell (Snow Catches on Her Eyelashes).
"Nightspell", from the album Snow Catches on Her Eyelashes (2020), is a piece that doesn’t rely on recognizable melodies or traditional structures. Instead, it is built from layers of sound that evolve slowly and without a clear direction.
Rather than following a form with a beginning, development, and end, the music remains in a continuous, almost suspended state that invites slow and attentive listening.
Eivind Aarset’s guitar, heavily processed with effects like reverb, delay, and modulation, loses its conventional tone and becomes a source of texture. He does not play melodic phrases in the usual sense but introduces isolated sounds, sometimes brief, sometimes sustained, that seem to emerge and fade within the sonic space like brushstrokes floating in the air. The harmony is ambiguous, and the prevailing sensation is one of weightlessness.
Jan Bang contributes by electronically manipulating all these elements, working with digital layers, samplers, and treated recordings to create an immersive environment that is not merely accompaniment but an essential part of the piece. His interventions are subtle but constant, allowing the music to breathe, expand, and contract naturally.
There is no percussion, no marked rhythm, and no clear meter. This reinforces the sense of freedom and makes the piece feel more like a soundscape than a conventional composition. "Nightspell" does not seek to impress with dramatic gestures but rather to build an emotional space where time seems to stand still. Every element is crafted to immerse the listener in an intimate, almost introspective experience, where the sound does not impose itself but invites you to inhabit it.

Vladislav Delay / Sly Dunbar / Robbie Shakespeare - 500-Push-Up (Album Excerpts)
Album Description: From Mille Plateaux to Leaf, Staubgold, and Raster-Noton, ~scape, among others, or on his own label Ripatti, the Finnish artist Sasu Ripatti, aka Vladislav Delay, has been exploring various iterations of the "dub culture vs. electronica", since 1997. His sonic crafts and unique signature sound have been sought after by an eclectic range of bands and artists, ranging from Massive Attack, Hauschka, Black Dice, Autopoieses, Animal Collective, or AGF. Vladislav Delay met Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare (the most prolific Jamaican rhythm section and production duo) thanks to a series of jam sessions. Trumpet player Nils-Petter Molvaer had been asked by the Jamaicans to join them and he invited Delay alongside guitar player Eivind Aarset to tag along, which eventually turned into the Nordub project. The result of these jam sessions turned into an album, mixed and mostly produced by Vladislav Delay, released on the label Okeh. It was also followed by an extensive series of live dates. This one-shot reunion was the beginning of another story: a trio composed by Delay, Dunbar, and Shakespeare. In January 2019, Vladislav Delay went to Kingston and spent some days at The Anchor studios, to record drums and bass with S&R, some voice takes and a series of atmospheric field recordings. Back to Finland, Delay started to experiment with this precious material, mixing, and overdubbing, in the comfort and quiet of his studio, based on the island of Hailuoto, Baltic Sea, Northern Finland, giving another feeling to the Jamaican trip. This became a tribute to the "dub spirit", but in a very personal way, far beyond any influence or "the obvious". 500-Push-Up is two worlds collapsing, merging, also showing some intriguing approach of the Jamaican groove, used as a filigree, like the echo or the ghost of reggae, converging and conversing with a post-industrial and experimental approach. To file beside experiments -- for instance -- such as Lee Perry's Scientist Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of The Vampires (1981) or the On U-Sound productions. Somewhere between the old-school electronica culture, the soundscaping, the experimental paths of Lee Perry and Adrian Sherwood, ghostly clubbing anthems, minimalism, pop, jazz, without being influenced, Vladislav Delay is building a drifting and coherent sound enigma. Personnel: Vladislav Delay - electronics, sampling, percussion; Sly Dunbar - drums; Robbie Shakespeare - bass. CD version includes two additional tracks.

Eivind Aarset: When Tonality Is the Excusion

“Norwegian musician Eivind Aarset opens this piece for his quartet (featuring bassist Auden Erlien and two credited drummers, Wetle Holte and Erland Dahlen, though one of them, Holte, only spends some of the time drumming) with syrupy held notes, Aarset’s electric guitar’s tone extended beyond the instrument’s inherent, unmediated possibilities. Delays that slowly fade keep notes in play, clock-like pings becoming whisps, strums becoming halos. There seems to be a precognition of this early on: right at the start, it’s as if another performance is layered under this one, if you listen closely — perhaps bleed from a nearby room, perhaps an intended substrate, perhaps a bit of something caught in the digital buffer of one of those tools arrayed in front of Aarset. ...”
