Napoleon as the black angel and Tsar Alexander the white angel
This is from an excerpt about Madame de Krüdener, a religious mystic during the Napoleonic era, from the memoir of Leon Dembowski, Moje Wspomnienia, Volume 1. (Source)
A bit about her career:
“Her literary activity was followed by various writings and pamphlets about humanity, in which she plunged into mysticism and presented herself as a prophetess. From 1806 to 1814, despite poor health and exhausted strength, she began to walk through Russia, northern Germany, the Netherlands and France, gathering listeners around her, handing out money and pamphlets.”
Her teachings:
“The principles of her teaching, both repeated in writings and disseminated by living words, consisted in implementing the principles of the early Christian Church and abandoning battles and wars. Moreover, the abolition of the death penalty, the return of freedom to subjugated nationalities and the strict exercise of Christian mercy completed this philanthropic system.”
In which she finds her ideas to be at odds with greater geopolitical events and social currents of her time:
“These sublime and beautiful thoughts, which probably once prevailed in beliefs, had few supporters in the era of Mme de Krüdener’s activity. All Europe seemed to be one camp, and Napoleon, on the one hand, and English intrigues, on the other, were completely destroying it. Everyone was thinking about the marshal’s baton, principalities, subsidies that Napoleon lavished, and while some were longing for constant conquests, others were thinking about how to break Napoleon’s yoke. Therefore, her apostolate, which could only reach places where the French eagles had not reached, did not really reach her convictions. Seeing that the path of persuasion would not reach her goal, she began to prophesy and predict the fall of the black angel (Napoleon), who would be struck down by the white angel (Alexander).”
What’s interesting is that the duel between Britain and France is diagnosed as the source of Madame de Krüdener’s problems, so she turns to a third party (Russia) to be the savior.
Her influence over Tsar Alexander I:
“As a result, Alexander wanted to know her, and it must be admitted that this partly corresponded to his inclination towards mysterious things, because many similar examples can be cited in the life of this monarch. […] Throughout all these years, Mme de Krüdener constantly worked on Emperor Alexander, having established influence mainly over his mind, pushing him towards mysticism, religiosity and abandonment of liberal principles.”
The author makes note that Madame de Krüdener and Tsar Alexander died around the same time.
Bold letters by me.

Edward Dembowski (born May 31st, 1822) was the eldest son of Leon Dembowski, a senator and affluent landowner. As a student, he discovered the works of Hegel; he published his first essay in 1841 and soon, aged twenty, became the editor of Przegląd Naukowy ("The Scientific Review"), which was at the time one of the most prominent left-wing newspapers in Warsaw. Greatly influenced by the French utopian socialists of his day, Dembowski, a staunch democrat, equated national liberation with the liberation of the common people, speaking out against both the conservative Polish aristocracy and liberal bourgeois-reformist circles. Though officially Tyssowski's secretary and subordinate, he was the de facto leader of the Kraków Uprising of 1846.
Dembowski was shot by Austrian troops on Feburary 27th, 1846; the wound was lethal, he died on that same day; he was twenty-three.
As his radical political views contrasted with his noble background, Edward Dembowski earned himself the nom-de-guerre of "czerwony kasztelanic" ("red castellan's-son" - his father was a castellan).
Today marks the 202nd anniversary of his birthday. (On that note: here is my translation of a poem Wisława Szymborska wrote about him.)

Love (Penguin Classics) Love (Penguin Classics) Paperback – December 30, 1975 by Stendhal (Author), B. C. J. G Knight (Author), Gilbert Sale (Translator), Suzanne Sale (Translator), Jean Stewart (Introduction) --Book Condition: USED/GOOD. Medium wear. Beige pages clean no writings--- Drawing on history, literature, and his own experience of unrequited passion, Love is a thinly disguised picture of the author's innermost feelings. Stendahl's obsession with Mathilde Viscontini Dembowski is at the heart of this book. For her part, she neither returned his love nor understood him. In an attempt to expain his feelings to her—and to exorcize his love—he dissects his passion. Bringing together the conflicting sides of his nature, the deeply emotional and the coolly analytical, Stendhal constructed a work that is both acutely personal and universally applicable. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. July Reads
Hi! As with every last day of the month, I would like to tell the books I have read this month. In this example, they are 10 from, romances, mostly contemporary and historical but also some mysteries. I would talk about them in the order I have read them (I would live their Goodreads links if you want to check them out):
1.      The Hound of Death (Agatha Cristie): A collection of Short stories, mostly horror but good ones as they have elements of mysteries but most of them have sad endings that have to do with death and magic.
2.      The Island (Agatha Cristie): A spiritual story about a woman that raises her son on an Island. The story is spiritual and dramatic.
3.      What Happens in the Ballroom or An Earl for Eliza (Sabrina Jeffries): It is the second book in the Designing Debutantes Series that I thought was good and steamy and it had the right amount of plot for a romantic drama.
4.      A Duke for Diana (Sabrina Jeffries): I liked this one better than the previous one as I was more invested in the characters and their stories, especially the two protagonists. It was also steamy and romantic but it has a side couple and characters that made it enjoyable.
5.      The Mystery of the Spanish Shawl (Agatha Cristie): I loved that short story about a novelist who hadn’t the inspiration to write about a cucumber but his imagination sent him on a quest for a shawl that in the end wrote about.
6.      Get a Room (Casey Dembowski): A contemporary romantic comedy that was steamy romantic and exciting from the beginning to the end. I loved the characters, all three of them as it was the protagonists and their friends and family. It helped me to travel in the autumn to Philadelphia and the art scene of the city which I liked very much.
7.      Study in Scarlet (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle): I have to confess that this was the first Sherlock Holmes book I read and I like it even if I didn’t go into the book as easily as other mystery books but when I got to the point that the plot started to thicken then I loved the descriptive passages and the interactions between the characters.
8.      Shipped (Angie Hockman): An enemies to lovers and a workplace romance on a cruise about a promotion. The book is on a cruise at Galapagos which I believe they have beautiful descriptions in the books. Also, the main protagonist is amazing and powerful and wants to change the world and the company she works for. The other characters are amazing and we learn their backstories too.
9.      Falling Inn Love (Erin Branscom): I loved this book and the author and innkeeper. Yes, it was romantic but had an amazing cast and protagonists in an Inn in New Hampshire owned by the family of a former marine.
10.   Baked Inn Love (Erin Branscom): A book about a road trip and two characters that have many things in common and make the most interesting cross-country trip in America, from California to New Hampshire, as we are going to the Inn from the previous book. I enjoyed the chemistry of the two main characters, also the snippets we get for characters from the previous book.

This Again? Challenge | Day Five: A Darker Shade of Magic
I’m just gonna keep going way into my past for these because it’s fun
As I recall, these books had a really cool magic system (and great characters!) but also showed the dark side of magic/life in a fantasy book

Does anyone happen to know the author of this illustration? Or where to find relevant resources? A cursory reverse image search has left me empty-handed.
Anyway, this goes hard.

Paprodziad - “Nadzieja” (Hope)
Cozy Slavic Reggae?
Reggae isn’t my preferred choice of music but I somehow love this video and its calming mood (with all the glimpses from the countryside, the cute animals, the smiling babushka wearing a headscarf, and the warm everyday scenery). It was filmed in rural areas of southern Poland, near the town of Kazimierz Dolny. The singer, here in his solo project, is also the main vocalist of the band Łąki Łan. The song itself is a reggae cover of a huge Polish 90s hit “Moja i twoja nadzieja” (My and Your Hope) by the band Hey.
[I noticed that a preview image isn’t loading for the above embed video for me, so here’s a direct link to youtube just in case]
