Tuesday, August 22: Katatonia, "Rein"
Jonas Renkse fully took over songwriting for Katatonia on City Burials, essentially committing the band to the more progressive direction that The Fall of Hearts first presented. To that end, the riffing wasn’t overly complex or technical, but laid an atmospheric foundation for Roger Öjersson to craft interesting leads and for Daniel Moilanen to power the narrative (and steal the show) with his jazz-inflected drumming. All of this was in service of increasingly enigmatic and downcast but not self-indulgent or whiny songs, and “Rein” captured the band’s approach in full: the track wasn’t very long, but it captured a variety of dynamics in such a subtle manner that on first listen it was easy to overlook everything that was going on within the song. Everything cohered into a moody whole, with even Renkse’s vocals floating over everything and creating a corresponding narrative alongside Moilanen. It didn’t necessarily grab attention the way The Fall of Hearts did, but “Rein” showed that Katatonia had successfully found a way to build on their template without falling back on formula.

The cold autumn wind
Is your only friend this night
You wander alone aimlessly
In the night that never ends
«There was a time when I cared
But now it's all in vain
You just let the wind
To take you away... »
Between the life and dreams
As if you're trapped within
How can you find the trace
How do you know where to go?
Always back to this familiar place
Which now feels so unknown
A Light In The Dark - Aimless

Hearing this song for the first time sitting drunk and high in my friends bedroom was one of the most influential moments this year and oddly comforting

Constant need to depart
And slip through the cracks of the divine closure
Constant need to depart (I'm reaching for oblivion)
And slip through the cracks of the divine closure (let me rest my heart in the quiet of the dark)

Violent rain, like tears of a wounded sky, falls down, burning slow. it loses grip of the daylight, while I'm giving up my final piece of freedom. Gliding, weightless, Sky Void of Stars' a song we need to cry with, watching me and my scars.
Love you Katatonia.

So as part of the upcoming plot a bunch of characters have been turning gray, which wouldn't be particularly notable except the newest character is. an oblisk
Neopets really looked everyone in the eyes and was like "alright screw it. we're giving the rock depression"
