Mohamed Samir is a multidisciplinary designer whose career began as an Engineer and a freelance designer before becoming head of design for a local startup in Egypt.

He has been recognized by several national and international awards varies between branding, typography, poster and print design, notably a D&AD Pencil, two Cannes Lions, two gold Pencils at “The One Show Awards” in the U.S. and six prizes at Lynx Awards. His work has been profiled in publications like Adobe, DesignWeek, Typeroom, Underconsideration, AIGA, IDI, Fubiz, Design Crowd and others.

Mohamed’s clients ranged from start-ups to multinational companies, and include collaborations with Nike - on the branding of their world’s largest store in Dubai - as well as Porsche, Fast Company, Canadian Post, Bain&Company, Visa and others.

I really like how colourful his work is,and how a lot of them have a black background with bright colours. I would like my portfolio to be this way, whereby my colourful pieces are enhanced by the dark background. This works well for his abstract and organic shapes, as it is not sharp on the eyes. His work has a mystical, holographic feel; almost like it isn’t real. This is because of the way he uses shine and 3D forms on a flat page, causing optical illusions.

As Samir is a multi-disciplinary artist, I thought it would be good to look at his work as I would also like to be multi-disciplinary in my future career. I do not want to be tied down to one medium, and Samir is a brilliant example of how you can be creative in lots of different genres of design.

Professor Ed Hawkins’ data visualisation, Warming Stripes!

It started at Hay Literary Festival. Professor Ed Hawkins was trying to find a way to communicate climate change to an audience that might not be able to interpret scientific graphics or data.

Those stripes — shades of red and blue representing hot and cold temperatures — chart temperature changes from 1850 to 2018, running from left to right. They look like a bar code, albeit a vibrant one with a serious message. Hawkins, a professor of climate science at the University of Reading, says that the impact was immediately obvious.

That data visualisation was based on local temperatures for the festival’s location in rural Wales. Since the 2018 festival, Hawkins has worked on a graphic for global temperatures. Most recently, it took centre stage at a very different festival: as the backdrop for Enter Shikari’s set at Reading.

On 21 June 2019, the summer solstice, he launched a website where users can view and download climate stripes for the cities they live in, from Vienna to Verona. So far there have been more than a million downloads.
