#Detective Lieutenant Elliott

I rewatched Knives Out before going to see Glass Onion, ya know just in case and all that. And one lil detail I really liked from the first movie was that Lieutenant Elliot called Benoît Blanc (aka Mr Blanc, The World's Greatest Detective, the Last of the Gentleman Sleuths) Benny.
"Quite frankly, Benny, we're getting to the point where I need to know what we're doing here."
Now that makes it seem like Lt Elliott is a pretty casual guy who's fine with nicknaming colleagues and acquaintances (I would assume as long as he's not investigating them.)
But he also said he could vouch for Blanc when the Thrombeys started questioning why Blanc was in the room. Which means they've worked together before and have done so often enough that Lt Elliott can call him Benny casually.

LUCY’S THIN BLUE LINE
Lucy and Law Enforcement ~ Part 3
Tumblr media
On “Here’s Lucy,” Lucy Carter not only had multiple run-ins with the police – she actually became Sheriff for a day! Here’s a look at Carter and Cops!
Tumblr media
“Lucy’s Impossible Mission” (1968) ~ In this “Mission:Impossible” spoof, even the police are in on the caper. John J. “Red” Fox was best known for playing policemen, which is what he did on five of his eight appearances on “The Lucy Show” as well as three of his five episodes of “Here’s Lucy.” The policeman has no lines, but is kicked by Lucy to get his attention and says “Ouch!”
Tumblr media
“Guess Who Owes Lucy $23.50?” (1969) ~ Van Johnson plays himself and his evil doppelganger.Orwin C. Harvey plays the Security Guard (right). Harvey has one line, spoken off screen. A second Security Guard goes uncredited and has no lines.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Ex-Con” (1969) ~ Lucy and a safecracker (Wally Cox) go undercover as Little Old Ladies at a dive bar. Vince Howard played the policeman on the extreme left. Many of his 125 TV and film credits were as law enforcement officials. Howard also played a policeman on “Lucy and Mannix are Held Hostage” (1971). Larry J. Blake (policeman on right) is making the first of his eight “Here's Lucy” appearances.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Goes on Strike” (1969) ~ Harry refuses to give Lucy a raise so she goes on strike with the other secretaries in the building, including Isabel (Mary Wickes). John J. ‘Red’ Fox returns as the cop on the beat in front of the Bradshawe Building.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Great Airport Chase” (1969) ~ Government Agent Bill (Morgan Jones) appears to investigate international epsionage in an episode shot on location at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The G-Man is never addressed by name but listed in the end credits.
Tumblr media
"Lucy Helps Craig Get His Driver's License" (1969) ~ A motorcycle cop (Ray Kellogg) faces off with driving test examiner Wibur Hurlow (Jack Gilford).
Tumblr media
Inside the police station, the officers issuing licenses are played by (left to right): Herkie Styles, Joseph Mell, and Sid Gould.
Tumblr media
“Lucy's Burglar Alarm” (1969) ~ Detective Harvey Gaynes is played by Elliott Reid, who also appeared on “I Love Lucy” and “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
“Lucy, the Cement Worker” (1969) ~ Lucy disguises herself as a street construction worker to find a valuable ring she’s lost. She encounters the cop on the beat, played by Harry Hickox in the first of his three episodes of “Here’s Lucy.”
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Viv Visit Tijuana” (1970) ~ At the border, Harry is questioned by a customs officer played by Don Megowan in his only appearance with Lucille Ball. He is perhaps best remembered as the Sheriff in The Wolfman (1956). His final role was as a police sergeant in the 1979 TV movie Mrs. R’s Daughter.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Wall Cox” (1970) ~ Lucy helps Wally Manley (Wally Cox) get a job as a warehouse security guard where they encounter armed criminals.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Ma Parker” (1970) ~ Carole Cook plays a master criminal. The police convince Lucy to take her place in order to nab her associates. Harry Hickox (Lieutenant L. Hickox, left) makes the second of his three episodes of “Here’s Lucy,” all as policemen. Stafford Repp (Police Detective Halloran,  right) made a career of playing policemen even before he became famous as Chief O'Hara on TV’s “Batman” (1966-68). He played two different officers of the law on “Dennis the Menace” in 1962 and 1963, alongside Gale Gordon.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Raffle” (1971) ~ The Baliffs in the courtroom are played by Emile Autuori and John J. ‘Red’ Fox.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Carol Burnett aka The Hollywood Unemployment Follies” (1971) ~ Lucy and Carol stage a musical revue featuring a tribute to the operetta Rose Marie (1930 & 1940). Four Mounties (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) sing “Stout-Hearted Men”. From left to right: Sid Gould, Kay Kuter, Johnny Silver and Mike Wagner.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Mannix are Held Hostage” (1971) ~ In this cross-over with the Mike Connors private eye series “Mannix” (saved from cancellation by Lucille Ball), the policemen are played by Vince Howard (left) and Robert Foulk (right).
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Celebrities” (1971) ~ Sid Gould plays the Security Guard at the gate of Morton Pictures. Impressionist Rich Little stars with Jack Benny.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Candid Camera” (1971) ~ Allen Funt plays himself and an evil imposter, getting the Carters to participate in criminal capers under the impression they are on “Candid Camera”.  Law enforcement is played by (left to right): Peter Leeds, Robert Carson as Sergeant Lou Holmes, and Paul Sorenson, who played policemen many times during his career.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Chinese Curse” (1972) ~ When Lucy saves a laundry owner (Keye Luke) from a safe falling in the street, reporters and the police are on the scene. Frequent background performer Walter Smith plays the policeman. He had appeared with Lucille Ball in Forever Darling (1956), as well as in Desilu’s “The Untouchables” and “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
“The Case of the Reckless Wheelchair Driver” (1972) ~ Lucy, in a wheelchair due to her broken leg, is set-up by a conman (Jesse White). Law enforcement officials are (left to right): Officer Rafferty (Robert Foulk), Sergeant Montgomery (Hal Hickox), and Officer Egan (Ed Hall).
Tumblr media
“Dirty Gertie” (1972) ~ Lieutenant Egan is played by Craig Stevens, who is probably best remembered for playing the title role in the private eye series “Peter Gunn” (1958-61). Egan questions Lucy and says he's “just trying to get the facts, ma'am.” This is a paraphrase of a quote from another famous TV detective, Joe Friday on “Dragnet.” The role of Lieutenant Egan was originally written with Webb in mind. Stevens even imitates Webb's deadpan delivery.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Goes to Prison” (1973) ~ When Lucy goes undercover in jail to discover where Mumsie Westcott (Elsa Lanchester) hid her stolen loot, Matron Wilson is played by Jody Gilbert, who also played a prison matron on “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
Two uniformed policemen are played by uncredited actors and have no lines.
Tumblr media
“The Big Game” (1973) ~ Jerry Jones plays a policeman on the prowl for ticket scalpers at the stadium. Prior to this, Jones played a policeman on “The Doris Day Show” and “The Brady Bunch.”
Tumblr media
“Lucy Plays Cops and Robbers” (1973) ~ On the side of the law are Officers Spencer and Riggs, played by Dick Sargent and Gary Crosby. Rumor has it that the police officers were supposed to be played by “Adam-12” (1968-75) co-stars Martin Milner and Kent McCord. Like “Here’s Lucy,” the NBC police drama was filmed on the Universal lot. Gary Crosby played a recurring role on “Adam-12.” In the script, one officer says to the other “I think we’ve been riding together too long” which would have been even funnier had it been an already famous pair of policemen like Milner and McCord. The episode features Al Lewis, who famously played Officer Schnauser on “Car 54 Where Are You?” (1961-63).
Tumblr media
“Lucy the Sheriff” (1974) ~ Lucy finds out that her grandmother was the first woman sheriff of a Montana town that is celebrating its centennial. She is asked to play her grandmother at the celebrations, which include the recreation of a bank robbery. Lucy is enjoying playing lawmaker until a couple of genuine robbers interrupt the celebration and take her hostage!
Tumblr media
Flora Belle Orcutt (the fictional one) is supposedly the first lady sheriff in the West. In real life, the distinction of first woman sheriff has been disputed. Some say it was Texan Emma Banister (1918), but others claim it was Mary Roach (1922-27) because Emma had inherited the position from her husband. Still others believe the title belongs to Kansan Mabel Chase (1926). Mrs. James Latty of Burlington, Iowa, was known as the first “Unofficial Woman Sheriff" as far back as 1870.
Tumblr media
Lucy the Sheriff meets Sheriff Bart Thomas, played by Orwin C. Harvey.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Calls the President” (1977) ~ In the CBS special, Lucy Whittaker (Lucille Ball) is scheduled to get a visit from President Jimmy Carter. In advance of the visit, the Barker home is visited by Secret Service Officers Thatcher (Joey Forman) and Stockley (Stack Pierce).
Tumblr media
Stone Pillow (1985) ~ Lucille Ball plays a homeless woman living on the streets. When another homeless woman dies on her corner, the police are called. Pat McNamara (Officer Daggett) played Sheriff Perkins in Silence of the Lambs (1991).
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Guard Goose” (1986) ~ This unaired episode of “Life With Lucy” was originally scheduled for broadcast November 22, 1986. When crime hits M&B Hardware, Lucy enlists the help of a guard goose. Charles Levin plays Pasadena’s finest Sergeant Green. Green played a policeman on two episodes of “Punky Brewster” (1987-88).

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
On the morning of December 7, 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on Naval Station Pearl Harbor, located in Honolulu, Hawaii, on the island of Oahu. National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day remembers and honors the 2,403 citizens of the United States who lost their lives there that day. Veterans and citizens have commemorated the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor since it took place, but the day became an official observance when Congress designated the day with a joint resolution on October 3, 1984. The resolution authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States "to observe this solemn occasion with appropriate ceremonies and activities" and "to pledge eternal vigilance and strong resolve to defend this Nation and its allies from all future aggression." Accordingly, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5286 on December 4, 1984. Subsequent Congresses and presidents have passed resolutions and issued proclamations for the day. On the day, flags are flown at half-staff until sunset to honor those who died from the attacks. Events, including a commemoration ceremony, are held at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial.
Although the attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise, tensions had been building between the United States and Japan for years. In the 1930s, Japan expanded into China, taking over its import market, agitating the United States. Japan invaded China in 1937 and subsequently participated in the Nanjing Massacre. During the following year, the United States gave its first loan to China. The United States instituted economic sanctions and trade embargoes with hopes they would keep Japan from expanding. In July 1939, the United States terminated the Treaty of Commerce and Navigation, which had stood with Japan since 1911. In the summer of 1940, the United States began restricting the export of some materials to Japan that would be useful to them in war. In July 1941, all commercial and financial connections with Japan were cut off, Japan's assets were frozen, and an embargo was placed on petroleum and other war materials. Concurrently, the United States stepped up aid to China, which did not please Japan's militarists. Japan did not shift course and tensions continued to rise.
Japan ordered the attack on November 5, but negotiations took place between Japan and the United States right up until the day of the attack, and Japan's commanders were told that they may be recalled if negotiations produced a favorable outcome. On November 26, the Japanese fleet stationed itself about 275 miles north of Hawaii. It was from this location that around 360 planes eventually launched to Pearl Harbor.
On more than one occasion, most notably on November 27, U.S. Army and Navy commanders at Pearl Harbor were warned that an attack was possible. They took some steps, but as they did not think that an attack would happen, their preparations were far from adequate. Washington didn't take the steps that were needed to be prepared either—they didn't expect Japan to attack Hawaii as Japan was about 4,000 miles from the island and Hawaii was about 2,000 miles from mainland United States. There were also some indications right before the attack that should have raised red flags that one was imminent. Early on the morning of the attack, it was learned in Washington that the Japanese ambassadors wanted an interview with the secretary of state at 1:00 p.m. (7:30 a.m. Hawaii time), which signaled war. Meanwhile, in Pearl Harbor, a Japanese submarine was spotted by a minesweeper four hours before the attack. Then, an hour and a half before the attack, the USS Ward, a destroyer, transmitted a message saying that it had engaged the submarine. Additionally, U.S. Army Pvt. George Elliott detected incoming planes on a radar screen, but he was told by his lieutenant that B-17 bombers from the United States were soon to arrive, so he should disregard what he saw.
On the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941, at 7:55 a.m. Hawaii time, the first of hundreds of fighter planes, bombers, and torpedo planes of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service attacked Naval Station Pearl Harbor. After much success, Japan launched a second wave of attack at 8:50 a.m., which lasted until shortly after 9 a.m. Most of the United States Pacific Fleet was moored around Ford Island in the center of the harbor at the time, and many airplanes were parked at nearby airfields. Japan's goal was to take out the fleet, and then to go on to other parts of the South Pacific, which the United States would then be unable to defend.
The attack on Pearl Harbor left 2,403 United States citizens dead, including 2,335 service members and 68 civilians. Additionally, 1,178 Americans were injured. Most of the damage was done in the first 30 minutes of the attack. Around 8:10 a.m., a 1,800-pound bomb was dropped on the USS Arizona, which went through the deck and into the forward ammunition magazine, causing the ship to explode and 1,177 of its crew members to perish. Following the destruction of the USS Arizona, torpedoes hit the USS Oklahoma, which sank, causing the loss of life of 400 sailors. The USS Utah—a battleship that was converted to a target ship in 1931—was sunk and 58 lost their lives. The rest of the battleships at the harbor were either sunk or damaged, and there were casualties on each vessel, including the USS California, USS West Virginia, USS Maryland, USS Pennsylvania, USS Tennessee, and USS Nevada. Each of these six battleships would eventually be returned to service. Three destroyers, three cruisers, and one minelayer were damaged. Aircraft were also targeted, with 159 being damaged and 188 being destroyed, most while parked at Naval Air Station on Ford Island and at nearby Wheeler and Hickam fields.
Although these losses and damages were disastrous for the United States, the Pacific Fleet's three aircraft carriers were away from the base at the time, remaining unscathed, which was of immense importance. Some cruisers and destroyers were also near the aircraft carriers, out of harm's way. Of additional importance, parts of Pearl Harbor—submarine docks, shipyards, repair shops, and oil storage depots—were not harmed. As for the Japanese, they lost fewer than 100 men, 60 or fewer planes, five midget submarines, and perhaps one or two fleet submarines in the attack.
The events of Pearl Harbor unified the American public and precipitated the almost immediate entry of the country into World War II. The day after the attack, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt made a speech to Congress in which he said December 7, 1941, was "a date which will live in infamy." He went on to say, "No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory. I believe I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again." He closed out his speech by asking Congress to declare war on Japan. Congress declared war the same day and the United States entered World War II on the side of the Allies. When Germany and Italy declared war on the United States three days later, the US declared war on them as well.
On National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, we remember and honor those who lost their lives on today's date in 1941 at Pearl Harbor. We fly the flag at half-staff and attend events in their honor. We remember the great significance of the day and how it brought the United States into World War II, forever changing the nation.
How to Observe National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
The day should be spent remembering and showing honor for those who lost their lives at Pearl Harbor. The following are some ideas on how to observe the day:
Attend the National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day Commemoration Ceremony, which takes place outside of the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. If you are unable to attend, you can view its live broadcast online. Other events are also held at Pearl Harbor on today's anniversary.
Visit the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. This site is home to the USS Arizona Memorial. Dedicated on Memorial Day in 1962, the ship's memorial is located over the sunken battleship. It is open to the public and can be reached by taking a free boat tour from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. The USS Oklahoma Memorial and the USS Utah Memorial are also part of the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. (Note: the USS Utah Memorial, located on the west side of Ford Island, may only be visited by those with military IDs who drive themselves to it.)
Watch videos from the Pearl Harbor National Memorial and view photos from National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day commemoration events.
Visit the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum.
Watch President Franklin Roosevelt's December 8, 1941, address to Congress.
Visit the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park. Located at Pearl Harbor, it is dedicated to a ship that sank 44 ships during World War II.
Visit the USS Missouri Memorial. World War II ended with Japan's surrender on board the USS Missouri. The ship is now located at Pearl Harbor and is a memorial.
Fly a flag at half-staff.
Visit The National World War II Museum in New Orleans.
Watch a documentary about Pearl Harbor.
Watch a film about Pearl Harbor.
Read a book about Pearl Harbor.

A Taste of Thanksgiving
Characters: Detective Lieutenant Elliott (Knives Out) x Black Female Reader Content: Fluff; love; Reader may be perceived as a cheery and doting homemaker. Food is central to the story. Author’s Note: I’ve taken it upon myself to give Det. Lt. Elliott the first name “Marcus” (aka Marc).
Tumblr media
Marc was going to flip when he came home. It was the first Sunday of November, and you’d finally turned on that “autumn” switch. You’d tossed a burnt orange table cloth over the table and even designed a simple centerpiece - a little bowl full of pine cones and an encased pillar candle in the center. You even bought new fall-themed place mats and linen napkins! This was going be you and Marc’s first holiday season together as a married couple, and you wanted to make it special. And Sunday dinner? Don’t even talk about it!
You were going to give him just a taste of what Thanksgiving dinner was going to be like. The evening’s protein wasn’t particularly a holiday dish--fried chicken. But for the sides, first--collard greens--a staple in your household, but today, with a little bit of kick, and some fatback, as opposed to smoked turkey meat. And there was macaroni and cheese that would make him want to slap somebody! Your candied yams were going to send him sinking into the floor. Just before it was time for him to get home, you pulled a hot apple pie from the oven.
Of course, Marc was accustomed to your cooking. But when he met you, you were a light eater--indulging in fried foods and dairy probably a handful of times a year--and he soon adopted your unofficial diet for his own lifestyle. But this would be the first time you got really down and dirty in the kitchen for him. “Oh, my God...” you heard him say as he walked into the apartment. You smiled to yourself as you lit the centerpiece’s candle. He walked into the kitchen with a raised eyebrow. “Whatcha got goin’ on up in here?” he asked.  “Just our Sunday dinner,” you said, smiling. “I got a little carried away.” You absentmindedly pulled the icy glasses of sweet tea you’d made inches away from the centerpiece, and Marc sauntered over and wrapped his arms around your waist. Then, he planted a kiss on your cheek. He walked to the stove and started lifting Pyrex tops, his eyes widening with each reveal. “You’ve been holdin’ out on me, Baby. Jesus...” “Sit down, Baby. I’ll make your plate for you,” you said, reaching into the cupboard. First, he washed his hands, then he took a seat at the table. You joined him with two plates in hand--one for him and one for yourself.  “It’s a little taste of what our first Thanksgiving is gonna be like,” you said.  “I see. Damn, you ain’t make no sweet potato pie, though, Baby?” he asked. You laughed. “Now, you know good and well that’s my PaPa’s territory. As long as he’s around, I’m not foolin’ with that dish.” Marc nodded and you both unraveled your silverware. “Oh, and you made yams, too,” he mentioned. You nodded and unraveled your silverware. “Got the restaurant napkins and everything!” Marc mumbled gleefully to himself. He went for the macaroni and cheese, first, and you took a stab at the greens. Marc’s eyes rolled back and he leaned back into the chair. “Ohmygod...” "Is it good, Honey?” “Hell yeah...” he mumbled. “This was a big mistake, Baby. Now I’m gonna want this every Sunday.” “Naaaah. I think I’m gonna enjoy making you antsy for Thanksgiving,” you teased. “That’s how you gonna do me, Baby?” “Yep,” you replied with a smirk. He nodded and cut a yam with his fork. Then, he popped it into his mouth and shook his head. “Look. Can we at least get these yams once a month?” You chuckled and shook your head. “I’ll think about it.” He took a bite of greens, and scrunched his eyebrows. “Mmm! What’s different in here?” “Baby, can you just eat?” you asked laughing. He joined in on your laughter. “Alright, alright, alright...” “How was work?” you asked. Marc swallowed. “Baby, this Thrombey case is about to be a pain in my ass, I’m lettin’ you know now...” Your utensils clinked against china as Marc gave you details (albeit, vague) about his new case. The oven that was slow to cool filled your kitchen with a comforting warmth. _____________________ TAG LIST @aloneandsleepless If you’d like to be on this tag list, just leave a comment below, or on my official tag request post!

Knives Out but it’s Community
Marta- Annie or Troy
I feel like both Annie and Troy fit Marta well. On one hand Annie was his favorite and she has the goody personality Marta has. On the other hand Troy got the most out of Pierces will and I could definitely see doing the hijinks part of the story.
Ransom-Jeff
Do I even have to explain? Both the Ahole of the group they just match each other(besides the racism). If anything lawyer!Jeff was optical Ahole. Also I love imagining Jeff just going “eat shit!”
Investigator Blanc-Abed or Buzz Hickey
Professor Hickey has the look, feel, and status to be Blanc but Abed has the personality and words. If anything Blanc would split up between them and Abed would do all the talking while Professor Hickey was there to be serious and “menacing” Kinda like Hotch and Spencer
Lieutenant Elliott-Frankie or Elroy
Two of the only other characters I actually take as serious. Elroy is older and doesn’t pursue in as much hijinks. Frankie establishes herself as serious and takes her job as so. I feel like they would either or would be unintentional assigned lieutenant.
Detective Hardrock-Dean
He’s apart of the investigation but definitely isn’t taken as seriously. He’s not a very serious character so him being apart of the investigation while not being the investigator or lieutenant makes sense.
Harlan- Pierce
I mean come on. Old dude dies and leave fortune. Tying back to how I think Marta could be either Troy or Annie. Movie wise Annie is his favorite but show wise Troy got the equivalent to what Marta got.
Meg- Britta
The only reason I chose Meg was bc they are both kinda the same. They are both “out spoken woke liberals” and so on. I don’t really think she would fit any other Thornbey better
Shirley- Fran
This one is my weakest one. I wouldn’t make Shirley die in this of course but I also want her to be an important character.
Then a bunch of mixed characters could be the rest of the Thrombey. Ex: Chang, Duncan, Star Burns, Leonard, etc

PLOT: When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. CAST:
Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc
Chris Evans as Hugh Ransom Drysdale
Ana de Armas as Marta Cabrera
Jamie Lee Curtis as Linda Drysdale
Michael Shannon as Walt Thrombey
Don Johnson as Richard Drysdale
Toni Collette as Joni Thrombey
Lakeith Stanfield as Detective Lieutenant Elliott
Katherine Langford as Meg Thrombey
Jaeden Martell as Jacob Thrombey
Christopher Plummer as Harlan Thrombey
GENRES:
Mystery
Comedy
Drama
Crime
INITIAL THOUGHTS:
That introduction scene of finding Harlan might have come straight out of a Seven Super Girls video.
Every time I see Katherine Langford, I can’t help but think of the Pretty Much It video where they make fun of the way she said “sprite” and then made fun of her accent and said “err nurr, hannur!”
I love Jamie Lee Curtis’ red suit.
Not the Jacob slander.
I kinda wish Daniel Craig didn’t wear that baby blue button up but I guess it matches his tie.
Richard looks a lot like he goes golfing at 5am every Saturday with his neighbor.
God, I would’ve hated my mother if she were Toni Collette stealing my tuition and as a result, my grandfather would not pay for my tuition anymore.
Where the fuck did they film this? The location, house, scenery, it’s all so gorgeous.
Oooh, the way she said “Cabrera.”
Lakeith Stanfield has a very soothing voice.
Stop, Harlan seems so precious… He’s so excited to be 85!!
This is why I could never be a nurse… too grounded and too much risk.
I would actually fucking panic and shit my pants if this shit happened to me.
That’s actually fucking ingenious, holy shit!
The secret door is so cool, I want one.
Not Nana thinking Marta was Ransom
The doggies are so cute.
Sometimes I forget that Chris Evans is hot.
Wait, Chris Evans is only 6’0??
Not my mom laughing at “CSI KFC”
“Eat shit. Eat Shit. Eat shit. Definitely eat shit. Eat shit.”
They’re all like “Yeah, I’m getting this asset” and then all of the assets go to Marta.
Jamie Lee Curtis going absolute fucking batshit.
Not Jaeden Martell saying “You had sex with my grandpa, you fucking…”
I love Chris Evans’ off white knit sweater.
Not my mom thinking this was about ninjas with knife skills
God, I love a good car chase.
Chris Evans with chunks of vomit on him…
In a parallel universe, Chris Evans charms Marta into marrying him and then he gets the house instead of being arrested.
Chris Evans getting arrested… but in style.
RATING: 4.5/5 stars

City of Angels (2014)
Tumblr media
Hadley stars as Stine in City of Angels, the author of a popular detective novel City of Angels which he is adapting into a movie.
Tumblr media
This is honestly one of our favorite photos of Hadley. It just looks so cool!
Ran from December 5, 2014 - February 7, 2015 at the Donmar Warehouse Directed by Josie Rourke
REVIEWS
There’s not a weak link in the ensemble either, and if the male principals (Hadley Fraser’s Stine, Tam Matu’s Stone and Peter Polycarpou’s Buddy) are impressive, the leading ladies (Rosalie Craig, Katherine Kelly and Rebecca Trehearn) are even more stunning every which way.
- Dominic Cavendish, The Telegraph
Fraser’s voice is a golden glory, wrapping itself luxuriously around Coleman’s big, brassily insolent, sizzlingly sexy jazz score – and, as embitterment and self-disgust set in during the second act, his performance grows in stature and intensity
- Sam Marlowe, The Arts Desk
Spinning between these women — a different man with each — Fraser achieves real roundedness.
- Matt Trueman, Variety

Fic: Holding Hands (Benoit/Marta, Knives Out)
I was going to write a flash fic based on a prompt I got ‘he meets her mother.  ha! Flash fic.  In actually a little more than 3000 words that is clearly not only a first attempt at Cablanca, but also an attempt to deal with stress.
WARNING: fic deals with Covid 19, which might be too much for some people at the moment.
Takes place about a month after the movie. _____ Benoit grinned when his phone rang.  It was Marta’s phone calls in the middle of the day that made his isolation bearable.  He was not a man well built for quartine, no matter how resolute he was to write a book, and no matter how many push-ups he did in his free time.  He couldn’t stand more than an hour of tv a day, and there was only so much news he could read before wanting to pull the plug on his internet.  A week ago Marta had called him during her break; hospitals needed extra help and of course she’d been one of the first to answer the call.  The first time she’d had an actual question about a subpoena she’d recieved, but after that the calls had continued each day at the end of her shift.  They had talked of nothing in particular and everything except the virus for a half-hour while she sat in a park and he sat in his apartment.
“From my window I can see a flowering quince.  The whole bush looks like it’s on fire with the most vivid of red flowers.  I shall attempt to send you a photograph if my neighbor’s cat ever decides to move off the fence.  He is rather blocking my view.”  He liked to have some pretty thought ready when she called, a reminder that not everything was as grim as respirator shortages and sore feet.
“Is this Mr. Blanc?”  The voice on the other end of the phone was not Marta, though there was a similarity in tone and accent.  He looked at the display on his phone; it did say Marta Cabrera.
“It is. May I ask who I have the pleasure of speaking with?”
“This is Elena Cabrera.  We’ve never met but my daughter has spoken of you.”  Her voice broke, just for a moment, barely more than a pause to draw in a breath, but it was enough to give him a clue.  Benoit sat on the closest surface, which happened to be the edge of his bed.
“Something’s happened to Marta.”  Talking with Marta every day was a delight in its own right, but it was also an affirmation that she was alright.  Tired and sore and worried, but whole and healthy despite the risks compounding daily.
“She was going to stay home today because she wasn’t feeling well, but this morning she started coughing and couldn’t catch her breath.  There’s an oxygen tank at the house and she thought that might be enough but it wasn’t helping.  She needs a ventilator.”
“She’s at the hospital?”  He closed his eyes, almost able to feel her small cold hand in his as they sat in plastic chairs in a waiting room, waiting to hear a prognosis.  She wasn’t Fran, though.  It wasn’t the same.
“She’s on her way.  We had to call an ambulance.”  For a moment there was no noise; he almost thought he could hear Elena’s heartbeat.  Maybe it was his own.  “I thought you should know.  Marta told me that you two had been talking.”
“You have raised a very intelligent daughter, Mrs. Cabrera.  A very kind and compassionate woman, not that I need to tell you that.  She is also strong.”  He was reminding himself more than her. “Thank you for calling me.”
“I have to go now, Mr. Blanc.  I don’t want her to be alone.”
“It’s Benoit, please, and if there is anything I can assist with please don’t hesitate to call.”
He spent a full minute staring out the window; from his seated position he could only see one flower on the bush.  The next minute he was on his computer, and relieved to find that despite so many businesses being shuttered he was still able to find a flight that left in a little over two hours.  He could be at Marta’s side by tonight.
He always kept a bag packed, never knowing when he might be called out on a case.  There were no plants to water, no pets to worry about.  He took a few minutes to find his copy of Chandler’s Farewell My Lovely because he’d told Marta about it, but other than that it was ten minutes from the end of the phone call to locking the door to the apartment.  He hadn’t been outside for three days, except for late-night runs.
The roads were virtually empty, an eerie sight that he was grateful for as he headed for the airport.  It only took him fifteen minutes to drive, which wasn’t an accident.  He traveled enough that proximity to the airport had been one of his apartment requirements.  Likewise he flew enough that it was worth his time to pay for TSA preferred.  He made it to his flight with time to spare.
There were only a few dozen people on the flight, everyone sitting in their own row unless they traveled together and the flight attendants wearing gloves and masks.  He was glad that the amount of conversation that was required of him was minimal.  Usually he was glad to talk to a neighbor or exchange pleasantries with the attendants.  Since the New Yorker article he’d even had a few requests for autographs.  Today, though, his only interest was on getting off the plane, as if his added focus could somehow make the plane land just a little earlier.  He politely refused a drink and pretzels.
The sky was just shading to dusk when he drove his rental car to the hospital.  It was the same place he’d been to before, the same place where Fran had died.  Marta wasn’t Fran, though.  She hadn’t been poisoned.  No one had tried to kill her.  No one he could fight, at least.  No enemy he could put his hands on and pummel to the ground.
“I’m looking for Marta Cabrera, please.”
“I’m only allowed to give out information about patients to family members.”
“I am working with the police on an investigation.  Detective Blanc.”  If he thought he could have gotten away with calling himself family he would have, but he didn’t know if they would check with Marta’s mother.  Lieutenant Elliott, though, could probably be trusted to lie for him if necessary.
“Just a moment Detective.”  The nurse’s hand shook a little as she used the computer; too much coffee and not enough sleep was his guess.  She told him the room number and a moment later was answering the phone.  She probably didn’t hear his thank you.  Rather than waiting for an elevator he sprinted up three flights to stairs.
A woman who looked too much like Marta to leave any doubt that she was Elena Cabrera was sitting next to a hospital bed talking in a low voice.  The only other person in the room was Marta herself.  Benoit didn’t know how a twin bed could make anyone look so small.  He knew she was only a few inches below his own modest height, but in the hospital gown with blankets pulled up to her chest she looked delicate and too pale.  On her left a machine beeped with proof that her too-big heart was beating.  On her right a machine assisted with her breathing.  From the doorway he couldn’t tell if she was conscious.
“Can I help you?”  Elana Cabrera stepped around the bed, standing in front of it with all the fierceness of a mama bear protecting her cub.  She all but obscured his view.
“Begging your pardon, ma’am, but I had hoped…”
“You’re Benoit Blanc.”  She tilted her head to the side, looking at him.  “I didn’t expect you to come here.”
He had been so focused on getting to Marta that it hadn’t occurred to him what it might look like when he showed up.  He had seen her a few times in the week after Ransom’s arrest, but then he had gone home, working two more cases in the past month before it had become obvious that he needed to stay at home.  They had talked about the case a few times over the phone.  Outside of this past week he wasn’t sure most people would call them friends even.
He couldn’t get her out of his head, not since that first moment he’d seen her foot bouncing on the floor, this woman with a kind heart so obviously grieving for a friend more than anyone in the Thrombey family grieved.  His first instinct, even after seeing the blood drop on her shoe, had been to protect her from a wake of vultures.
“I thought I might see for myself if you or your daughter needed anything.”  As if he’d just come across town to visit, not on a plane from eight states away.  “How is she?”
“They gave her something to help with the fever but she needed the ventilator to help her breathe.  She’s awake sometimes, but can’t talk.  You sit with her, I’ll go find another chair.”
“Please, let me go.  I did not mean to deprive you of either a chair or time at your daughter’s side.”
“I need to stretch my legs a little and get some coffee.  You’ll stay until I get back at least?”
“I’ll stay.”  He had no intention of leaving, not anytime soon.  After Elena left he dropped his travel bag in the farthest corner of the room.  He stopped long enough to take out a book before slipping into the only chair in the room.  Marta’s eyes were still closed.  Her hand rested against the blanket close enough that he could take it in his own if he dared.
“I believe I mentioned the other day a need to take care of yourself.  You said you were safe with your masks and your gloves.”  He had barely dared mention his concern for her safety.  “This is not what taking care of yourself looks like.”
An overwhelming need to touch her drove him into taking her hand.  It was cold, but her hand was always cold.  She wore sweaters even in the summer, she’d told him.  His own hand was far from cold and he wrapped it around her fingers, willing his heat into her hand.  His life force too, if need be.
“I hoped to see you again, but it was my intention to ask you to dinner.  Someplace nice, where I would hold out the chair for you and tell you how beautiful you looked.”  She always looked beautiful, even now with the medical tape on her cheek and the shadows under her eyes.  He wondered how much was being sick and how much was working too hard.  Would he ever get to see her when she was simply relaxed and happy?  “Truth be told I was working on an excuse to come up here.  It would have been only polite to call if I was to return to the area for a job.  Someone offered me a case in Connecticut and that’s practically next door.”
Marta’s eyelashes fluttered; he held his breath to see if she would open her eyes.  She didn’t.
“You’ve had so many changes these last weeks.  I didn’t want to complicate things but dinner wouldn’t be too much, would it?”
“I’m afraid the only dinner she’s having today comes in an IV drip.”  A nurse, mask over her face and gloves on, came into the room.
“How is she?”
“We’ve been able to bring down her fever, and that’s a good sign.  We’re pushing fluids, since there was some dehydration.  That could be the fever or it could be that she’s been worrying hard and not taking enough breaks for food and water.”  The nurse changed the nearly empty saline bag for a full one.  “If she fights half as hard for herself as she does her patients she’ll be fine.”
“Did you hear that darling?  You’re a fighter, and you need to beat this thing.”  When the nurse was gone he squeezed Marta’s hand, talking to her in a low voice.
“I need…”  He needed her.  It was as simple and as complicated as that.  His life was a nomadic one, going where the cases called him.  The last time he’d sat beside a hospital bed had been more than ten years ago when he’d bid adieu to his mama, the last solid tie he’d had.  He’d dated occasionally but never anything serious enough to look at jewelry.  At some point he’d just assumed that he was past the age of considering marriage.
And then he’d met Marta.  He wanted everything with her. He wanted to pick up his entire life and move it to wherever she wanted to be.  He wanted to court her like she deserved, wanted to hold her hand, wanted to know what it was like to kiss her.  Now he just wanted her to breathe.  “You just keep fighting, like this blasted virus is Thrombey kin, you hear?”
He spoke to her of the flowers he’d seen from the window of his apartment and the woman who walked her small dog every day no matter the weather.  Nothing of consequence, but talking was easier than silence.  When Elena returned she carried two coffees and offered one to him.
“I have sugar and powdered creamer if you need anything.  Someone will be in shortly with a second chair.”
“Black is fine, thank you.”  Reluctantly he let go of Marta’s hand and stood up.  “I do insist you take the chair, Mrs. Cabrera.”
“Elena please.”  She didn’t argue, collapsing into the chair.  “Did she wake up at all?”
“No, but the nurse was in to change the IV and said her fever is improving.”  He wanted to pace but only allowed himself to walk to the other side of the bed.
“Thank God for that.”  Elena fingered a medallion hanging from a necklace.  “She was never sick very often as a child, not once we figured out her unique response to…”
“She is a very honest person who does not handle deception well.”  Honest.  Kind.  Perhaps it was the fact that she was so different from the people he met during the course of his work that drew him to her.  Or perhaps it was just her.
“She’s a good girl.”  Elena’s voice shook.  Benoit scrambled for something to say to help her steady herself.
“I bet you have a few good stories to tell about her childhood.  I would be indebted to you if you told me one or two; I do so love a good story.”  With perfect timing an orderly brought in a chair and he settled in.  “Nothing that would embarrass her, of course.”
“You and my daughter…”
“Friends, ma’am.”  For the moment it was the only truth, but that didn’t stop him from resting his hand over her fingers, keeping away from the IV needle at the back of her hand.
Elena told stories, and he added a few from his own childhood in exchange.  By the time the hospital was quieting down he was able to convince her that she should go home and get some sleep.  He could be trusted to sit with Marta.
“Where are you staying while you’re here?” She asked as she stood near the doorway, looking at her daughter and having trouble leaving.
“I am well used to sleeping in chairs.  I’ll get some sleep when I need it.”  Staying up for a couple of days wasn’t uncommon in his line of work.
“When I come back in the morning you’ll go get some rest at our house.  Marta’s house.  You know there are plenty of rooms.”  She touched his arm, reminding him for a moment of his own dead mama.  “You won’t help her by exhausting yourself.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Benoit was four chapters into Fairwell My Lovely when he looked up to find Marta looking at him.  The book almost fell from his hold.  “Hey there sleeping beauty.”
When she struggled to speak he leaned in, touching her cheek lightly with his fingers.  “You have a ventilator, which is why you can’t talk.  Your mama was here with you all day but went home to sleep and report back to your sister.  You missed our phone call today so I thought I’d drop in and see how you were doing.  Everyone is fine.  You’re going to be fine.”
She looked confused, but he didn’t know if it was his presence that was the issue or her location.  “Do you need me to find a nurse?”
Slowly she shook her head.
“Call your mother?”  Again a shake.
“I was reading that Chandler novel I told you about, shall I continue?”  The nod of her head was barely perceptible.  He settled back in, holding the book higher so he could look at her and the page.  His free hand touched hers and after the first few lines he could feel her squeeze his fingers.
It was three days later when the doctor decided that she was responding well enough to treatment that she should be able to breathe on her own.  He waited outside the room while they took out the tube, frowning at the coughing and listening for the sounds of breathing even though he was too far away to distinguish her breathing from anyone else in the room.  When he returned she had a cannulas in her nose for oxygen.
“You’re here.”  Her voice was raspy and dry.  It was the best sound he’d ever heard.
“Did you think I would make my exit without letting you know?”  In the last three days he’d only left the hospital twice, both times to sleep in a guest room of the former Thrombey mansion.
“No, I mean you came here.”  Elena quietly got up from the chair beside her daughter’s bed.
“I’ll be back in a few minutes.  I need something,” she said vaguely.  Benoit moved closer to the bed.
“I couldn’t be anywhere else.  You mean a great deal to me, Marta Cabrera.”  It was as much as he dared to say.
“I thought I dreamed you.  Your voice…” she coughed, seeming to have trouble catching her breath.
“I don’t believe anyone has confused me for a dream before.”  He held a glass of water for her, letting her take a small sip.  It seemed to help.
“I missed you.”  Her eyes closed for a moment but then opened again.  He could look at her eyes forever.
“I missed you too.”  There were a million other things he wanted to say but they could wait.  They had time.  When he sat down beside her bed she held his hand and for the moment it was everything.

WARNING: Mentions of spoilers from the movie Knives Out.
"Hugh... did this…"
He grasps what they're concluding when all three pairs of eyes fall on him after Marta's sudden revelation. Ransom doesn't have to be a mind reader to recognize that right now in their pea-sized little brains they are thinking every single name of what his family has conditioned them to think about him. Trust fund playboy, arrogant prick, asshole. But for once in his miserable life, he had done something for someone other than himself and he was proud of that. A smirk is instantly on his face while he gets just close enough to Marta "I'm goona say this just to you. No cameras, no courtroom, just to you because you know it's the truth. We allowed you into our home. We let you watch our grandad. We welcomed you into our family. And now you think you can steal it from us? Now you guys can sit here and think I did everything I did to protect my home, my birthright, or my ancestral home but what I undoubtedly did this for was love." "That's hooey! You expect us to believe you did all of this for love?!" Blanc laughs with amusement. "Oh shut up Blanc! Shut up!" He snaps with his voice in an almost snarl. "For love? What the hell is he going on about?" Lieutenant Elliott asks suddenly perplexed. "He had an accomplice?" Trooper Wagner asks while looking at Blanc for answers. "Who aided you, Ransom?" Marta asks worried while taking a step towards him. "You were distressed that he wrote her out of his will, weren't you Ransom?" Blanc asks while regaining his posture and rejecting everyone's questions and focusing his attention directly back onto him. "It's important you know she had nothing to do with this, she didn't know of any of this," Ransom warns with a stern voice and examining Blanc's eyes. "What did you mean when you said you did this for her, Ransom?" Blanc asks curiously while leaning into his seat and instantly perceiving his confession. "Isabella deserved to be on that will same as Marta, when Harlan cut me off not only did he leave Isabella penniless but he also took away the chance of me taking care of her." "But, you despise Isabella! You make her call you Hugh, like Fran." Marta interrupts and looking at him in confusion. "I don't detest her! And I've never made her call me Hugh, she's known me as Hugh ever since we were kids and I never bothered correcting her because that's all she's ever known. You know I knew it was only a matter of time until Harlan cut me off, but when he told me he was surrendering everything to Marta I was livid. It was detrimental enough that Walt's nazi of a son had managed to get Isabella fired but leaving her nothing, that was bullshit. How was I going to take care of her with nothing? I've cherished her all my life you know? She's the only pleasing thing around this bullshit of a family, I merely attended those senseless reunions just to see her. Everything until now was out of love for her." "Was all of this really worth it? For her?" Blanc asks, and he can tell that as the detective is gazing at him he's being genuine. "But it doesn't matter, does it? You already told me Fran wasn't dead, so what do you have me for? Nothing. What? Attempted murder, I get arson for the bombing, maybe a few other charges, with a good lawyer I'll be out before you know it."He turns to look at Marta with a seething expression "And then you'll see just how much hell I can wreak on your life, you vicious little bitch." Marta looks at him suddenly in a nauseous expression, he can only look back at her in sudden confusion until suddenly he recognizes what is about to happen but it’s already too late as she projectile vomits all over him even getting some in his mouth. "AUGH! WHAT THE SHIT!" He falls back cursing, while she drops to her knees, spitting. "That means she was lying!" Wagner exclaims suddenly. "That's right, Fran's dead." Marta states while wiping her mouth with her sleeve and instantly looking directly back at Ransom "And you just confessed to her murder." Ransom grasps all of this in for a brief second until he recognizes what he must conclude  "Well. In for a penny…"It scarcely requires him a fraction of a second before, he selects a knife and tackles Marta. Everything feels like it's going in slow motion, he decides that if he can merely kill Marta there's the chance that the will can go directly back to his family again and maybe just maybe he can still provide for Isabella, sure he'd be behind bars but even that sliver of chance gives him hope. As Ransom and Marta fall together, he immediately goes to plunge the knife into her chest, they both lay there for a second her eyes wide in horror and his wild and determined. Suddenly it dawns on both of them that something isn't right and slowly but surely he withdraws the knife from her chest and it dawns on him that it's just a prop he pumps it up and down a few times, the spring making a pathetic toy noise. Ransom smirks. "Shit." Is all that escapes from his mouth as he is tackled and promptly thrown in handcuffs. The walkout of Harlan's home feels like an eternity when he makes his way out the front doors and he observes his entire family. He isn't focused on them, though; he immediately sees Isabella by herself distanced from his family and hugging her torso, her eyes spot him immediately and when she realizes the officers hauling him away her hand suddenly covers her mouth. Some part of him wants to shout "Isabella, I love you and I did this for you! Wait for me!" But his throat feels shut and he can't seem to find words. He feels remorseful, not of the crimes he's committed but more so of how he's failed her by now going to jail and being penniless. Ransom can feel his family's eyes on him as the officers haul him away, he doesn't care though he knows they're really unsurprised and that they're probably rejoicing at the thought of him in prison. He can't help but laugh behind the back of the police car now at the small silver lining in all of this, they were now all broke too, no more looking for handouts by Harlan. Sure, Marta had succeeded in everything at the end but at least none of his family would see a dime. The top of the police car flashes it’s familiar blue and red lights and it’s sirens rings in his ears as it pulls away from Harlan’s estate, he isn't sure what to expect now for his future but the sole thing that seems to put him at ease is that he did all of this for love and maybe just maybe the jury may see that in his trial.

This is what happens when you give up fighting against characters that walk off the screen after you watch a movie and allow them to get comfortable in your head.

Benoit Blanc: I am going to speak to you very vaguely about a problem that I have, and you cannot ask me any questions or details about it.
Lt. Elliott: That is my ideal conversation, aside from no conversation, but that feels unlikely.
