Lolei temple, Angkor
Our second day in Angkor took us far from the madding crowd, to the Rolous group of temples, half an hour to the east of Angkor proper. Lolei is a very small site, only one small temple remains, to the right. A buddhist monastery has been added; monks were chanting prayers during all our visit. Frangipani trees always remind me of West Africa. Beautiful, fragrant flowers. The temples were…

I would tell anon to not write an Indian or Hindu character if they don't have enough knowledge and don't want to put the effort in researching. To nail a character that has a different ethnicity and culture as yours, you need to put in the work to research. Otherwise, that character will end up being superficial, and even offensive. Learn a bit from what kind of critique J.K Rowling, one of the most influential authors of our time, received when she wrote characters that weren't part of her ethnicity, such as Cho Chang, or Parvati and Padma Patil for example.
As for the claims that "low caste people were aboriginals who were turned into demons by Aryan invaders", that is a completely false claim. Unfortunately, these kind of claims get thrown a lot in the Indian anti-caste literature. For example, there's a Mundari tribe that is known as "Asur tribe". They have nothing to do with being Asuras of Hindu mythology, but because their ethnonym vaguely sounds like Asuras of Hindu mythology, Indian "intellectuals" started writing atrocity literature, that Goddess Durga killed the poor austroasiatic Asur tribals, whose ancestor was this evil Mahishasura. These people called Goddess Durga with names I shall not repeat. This is ridiculous if you consider that another group of tribals claim that Durga was not a "Brahminical goddess" but a tribal goddess from the Vindhyas, worshipped by Sabara, Barbara and Pulinda peoples.

This kind of third rate academics can only thrive in Indian humanities faculty. By the way, not all Asuras were bad, many Devatas too were referred to as Asuras. It was just a neutral epithet before, but after the samudramanthana, the shift in mythology that the Devas that got the sura amrita are gods and those that didn't get is are asuras.
Listen, there's a Rigvedic god Pusan who is shudra. Several of our gods are described as shyama varna or krshna, dark, darker than night. Please be cautious of people who try to racialise Hindu mythology and fit it into the 19th century racist european eugenicist racial theories that have been debunked.
this is an anon sent to @/fandomshatepeopleofcolour in 2020 but this highlights an issue i need people to address.
......what the actual fuck.
my head hurts terribly rn or else i would have added my own viewpoint, because i have thoughts, but right now i just can't phrase them in a way that isn't immensely angry.

The 15 Nityas represent different aspects of the Supreme Mother, depicted as the red goddess with her three gunas and the five elements of ether, air, fire, water, and earth.
Similar to the way the moon retains its essential nature while appearing differently in various phases, the Supreme Mother, too, manifests in diverse forms. Each Nitya possesses her own unique vidya (mantra), yantra, and a group of associated energies (Shaktis).

Not me crying (in a good way!) thinking about how I discovered Vasanta (which I feel like it's safe to say that he's my Ishta devta)
(Context: I was answering a question on r/Hinduism that was "Why did you choose *your* Ishata Dev?")

Question: Amma, on what form should one meditate? Can one meditate on any form?
Amma: The bond you have forged with a particular deity over lifetimes is in your blood. You need to meditate on the form of that deity only.
Question: How can we discover who that deity is?
Amma: When some people fall down, they spontaneously cry call out "Krishna!" In previous lives, Lord Krishna must have been the ishta devata (the preferred form of divinity) of those who feel more attracted to Lord Krishna than to other divinities. In that case, there's no need for them to meditate on Devi. They need meditate only on Krishna. […] Children, if you have been meditating on the form of Lord Krishna until now, continue with that. You must imagine Him to be one with all other divinities and the embodiment of all divine qualities. If you have been meditating on the form of Devi, continue doing so. Whenever you go to any temple, visualise your ishta devata there. Children, just because your mother's brother calls her "sister" doesn't mean she is not your mother. Everyone's bhavana (imagination) is different. One may address the Lord according to one's bhavana.
In dance dramas, it's the same dancer who wears different costumes to play different roles, isn't it? Is there any change in the man just because he wears different costumes? No. In films, how many characters the same actor plays. However, the actor doesn't change. God can assume any form, but He doesn't change at all. Even if one who meditates on Devi goes to a Krishna temple, it is alright for her to pray "O my Devi!" There is only one Self. The consciousness that inheres in the forms of Devi and Krishna is one. God will appear before us in a form that corresponds to our bhavana. If we imagine God as grass, He will appear before us in such a form. If we envisage him as a stone, He will appear as such, and if we think of Him as a buffalo, He will manifest as one. We can imagine Him in any form we like. The only thing is, we must have faith in that form.
Clay will take the form of the mould into which we pour it, but clay itself does not have any particular form. Even though water appears to take the colour of the bottle into which we pour it, water itself is colourless.
Question: In which spot should we visualise the ishta devata?
Amma: Children, visualise your ishta devata in the lotus of your heart or between your eyebrows. For the householder, the heart lotus is an ideal locus of meditation.
Question: Amma, how should we begin our meditation?
Amma: Visualise your ishta devata from feet to head, and from head to feet, gazing upon each limb in turn. Those who meditate on the form of Krishna should meditate on His feet, anklet, shin, yellow robes, bangles, the flute in His hand, garland of wild flowers, earrings, lips, eyes, crown and peacock feather, and then work your way downwards.
Just as it is done to the idol in the temple, imagine performing abhishekam, the ceremonial bath, to your ishta devata. First do abhishekam with water. Then use milk, sacred ash, sandalwood paste and flowers. Imagine dressing up your ishta devata with fine garments, and adorning Him or Her with ornaments. After that, mentally wave the arati flame before the deity. You can imagine the child Krishna running away, and you as Yashoda, his foster mother, running after Him. It is also good to sit and chant mantras or hymns in praise of your ishta devata. You must open your heart to your ishta devata. Keep crying out, "O Lord! Where are You?"

Farhan’s Personal Practice - 07/10/2023
Currently working on revitalizing my personal practice, and re-evaluating the deities I am working with. Here are the major changes I’ve made thus far!
1. I have been trying to work with Shakti in the form of Durga and Kali for the past year or two, but have recently realized that they have no interest in working with me. This was a hard thing to accept - especially given how long I had been working on my relationship with Durga in particular - but I also feel like a lot of tension has left me since coming to this realization. Since accepting this I have felt a recent pull to dedicate my devotion to Sarasvati and Shailputri! Sarasvati I chose because I both felt drawn to her, and because as a Capricorn she is a very auspicious Ishta Devata for me. As for Shailputri, I felt intuitively drawn to her (I can explain this more if anyone’s curious ☺️).
2. Again finding a deity who I don’t work with well - I am changing my focus from Hestia toward Gaia. I don’t believe Hestia is *against* working with me - but I feel like her attitude towards me can be summed up by a shrug emoji 😅. However I feel *very* intuitively compelled to learn more about Gaia and see if this is a better fit.
3. I am working on building a relationship with Apollo and I’m having mixed results 😅 he seems genuinely interested in building a relationship with me but also seems *super* jealous any time I’m trying to work with other deities, or even research other deities? (Has anyone else experienced a kind of possessive nature in their dynamic with Apollo?) I used to be a devotee to Diana/Artemis before my transition, and recently I wanted to try working with a male deity for a change (I typically only work with female deities). After seeing some people talk about their experiences with him on here I decided to give it a shot :)
4. In my person practice I center most things around the 4 elements - so ideally I’d like to have 4 core deities I work with. Currently I have Apollo for Fire, Sarasvati for Water, Gaia for Earth, and Shailputri for Air. I’m trying out this arrangement to see how things work out - but I’m not 100% set on anything yet.
If you want to learn more or have any questions my ask box is always open!

Exploring Angkor. Temples. Gods. Dancers
Banteay Samre Temple, Angkor, Cambodia Banteay Samre is a bit out of the way. Which is fine. It was the second temple we saw on the first day. Built around the 12th century, it was dedicated to Vishnu. The lintel above represents a war scene (or so I’m told). See the character drawing a bow on a chariot on the left. There is so much detail everywhere, particularly on the lintels above the doors…

Do the easiest puja on Mahashivratri
The Mahashivratri this year is celebrated on 26th February 2025. It is a night of devoted to Bhagwan Shankar. Read about the elaborate and the simple pujas which you can perform on this night. Do something to utilise the power of this night, especially so when the coming times are so turbulent.
I received several questions on how to do the simplest Mahashivratri puja routine thus this mini post. Maha Shivratri is celebrated on the night of Magh Krishna Chaturdashi. This year it is on 26th Feb 2025. Ideally this Utasv of Sanatan Dharma is celebrated over 3 lunar days/ tithis from Magh Krishna Trayodhashi, Chaturdashi and Amavasya. Every follower of Sanatan Dharma will do pujas of…
