Bad news from the Who merchandise front: Big Chief Studios, makers of detailed licensed figures that has included a number of Doctor Who-related releases including Twelfth Doctor and Clara, is going out of business and it looks like people who paid deposits (some in the thousands of pounds, it seems) are having some issues right now.
Apparently at least one other company doing Who merch is also going under (it's mentioned in the discussion under the above news story but it's not a name I recognize).
Of course the debate is over whether the divisive and destructive era that just ended is to blame (see the comments on the article). I won't call it the only reason (the figures were hellish expensive, after all, and the UK is going through a rough patch economically) but definitely the lack of interest in Who merch and the reduced fanbase certainly must have been contributing factors. (I'd be interested in comparing with the status of its North American counterparts such as Sideshow and Hot Toys.)
Whatever the cause, I feel sorry for the people who have been collecting these figures over the years. Cost aside, they were beautifully made. Maybe as part of the liquidation the opportunity may arise for people to obtain, say, Twelve and Clara figures at a discount.

STOCK
We have about 100 decks: 20 in full bundles, the remaining 80 will be sold individually. We also have four proof-copy decks. These decks do not have a custom tuck box and have slight misalignment on the back and border designs, and will be sold at a discount.
All orders will also contain a random bookmark. If there is one you want in particular, you may also purchase one. We have leftovers of all merchandise, though amount varies.
Stock is quite limited and we do anticipate things will sell out fairly quickly. Thank you all for your support and enthusiasm as we enter the last leg of this project. The last chapter of trials is about to begin!

The World's Finest Zine is an unofficial, for-profit, and SFW fanzine featuring the characters Superman and Batman! This project will specifically feature Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent and focuses on our contributors' interpretations of their relationship. Our zine will feature a diverse range of fan interpretations, AU, headcanons, and canon-compliant illustrations and stories!
The zine booklet will contain PG13 images and stories. There will also be bundles offered with both physical and digital merchandise.
This zine is for profit, meaning all proceeds earned after deducting the cost of production, shipping, and fulfillment will be split equally between all mods and contributors who wish to receive monetary compensation. Compensation will be distributed after the completion of leftover sales.

The zine will be shipped from the mainland United States using USPS for domestic shipping and Ascendia for international buyers. Why Costco is Cheaper than Amazon

"The story of Costco begins decades before the first store launched in 1983 with FedMart, a discount department store for government employees.
FedMart was founded by entrepreneur Sol Price. Jim Sinegal started his career at FedMart and thought of Price as a mentor.
The pair developed and refined the wholesale club strategy together at FedMart, which was one of the first general merchandise retailers to expand into other categories like groceries, gasoline, and prescription drugs.
Sam Walton liked what Price and Sinegal were doing with FedMart in California so much that he opened the first Walmart in Arkansas 1962.
After an investor forced Price out of FedMart, he leaned more heavily into the membership model in 1976 with Price Club.
Price wanted his store to be a wholesale supplier for small businesses, and he opened his first location in an old aircraft hangar that was once used by aviator Howard Hughes.
In 1983, Sinegal and Walton each launched members-only warehouse clubs — Costco and Sam’s Club — that bore striking resemblance to Price Club.
The basic concept across each company was the same: shoppers pay a fee in order to gain access to the bargain pricing. In each case, the business relies on membership fees more than product markups to earn a profit.
Company sales in that first year reached $101 million, plus $1.3 million in membership fees, according to SEC filings.
In the beginning, non-members could shop as long as they paid a 5% surcharge on their purchases. There are still a few ways to shop at Costco without a membership.
Sales at Costco rocketed from zero to $3 billion in less than six years — a first for any company in history, according to the company.
Costco became a publicly traded company in 1985, initially offering shares for $10. Due to several stock splits, one initial Costco share would be six today, worth a total of more than $3,200.
Despite their similarities, Costco, Price Club, and Sam's Club weren't direct competitors, as each had a sizable geographic territory in which to expand.
Price Club was largely in the Southwest, centered in San Diego, while Arkansas-based Sam's Club had the Midwest and Southeast, and Costco took the Northwest, headquartered in the Seattle area.
One way Costco found to keep prices low was to sharply limit the number of different products in its inventory.
Even today, Costco only carries around 4,000 unique products in its assortment — referenced by stock-keeping-unit codes or SKUs — while typical supermarkets carry 30,000 or more.
In 1993, Price Club and Costco joined forces and began operating as PriceCostco with 206 locations and $16 billion in annual sales.
The company dropped the awkward PriceCostco branding in 1997 and reverted to Costco.
A few remaining Price Club locations were rebranded to Costco at this time as well.
In its 20th anniversary year, Costco had 430 warehouses in North America, Asia, and the UK, over 40 million membership cardholders, and generated $42.5 billion in revenue.
That year the company ranked ninth among the world's largest retailers.
US warehouses that year generated an average of $112 million in annual sales, while 11 locations exceeded $200 million.
Costco also opened its fifth Business Center that year, a concept that caters more to small business owners than to household shoppers.
Sinegal retired as CEO on January 1, 2012, handing the leadership to the company's head of merchandising, Craig Jelinek.
Sinegal continued to serve as Company Advisor and Director, ultimately retiring from the Board in 2018.
Jelinek had also previously worked for FedMart, and was one of Costco's early hires in the 1980s, rising to vice president in 2004 and currently CEO.
Jelinek was in charge of opening Costco's sixth location and helped the company expand in Nevada and California. As vice president of merchandising oversaw a range of priorities including e-commerce, foods, and pharmacy.
Costco became the third largest retailer in the world in 2014, a ranking it still holds today behind Walmart and Amazon.
Walmart made more than $600 billion in worldwide retail sales in 2022, followed by Amazon at $343 billion, and Costco at $217 billion, per the National Retail Federation.
Costco turns 40 this year with 852 locations around the world and more than 124 million membership cardholders.
Costco has made more than $235 billion in revenue over the past four quarters. "

'It Hasn't Delivered': The Spectacular Failure of Self-checkout Technology

Unstaffed Tills Were Supposed to Revolutionise Shopping. Now, Both Retailers and Customers are Bagging Many Self-Checkout Kiosks.
It's a common sight at many retail stores: a queue of people, waiting to use a self-checkout kiosk, doing their best to remain patient as a lone store worker attends to multiple malfunctioning machines. The frustration mounts while a dozen darkened, roped-off and cashier-less tills sit in the background.
For shoppers, self-checkout was supposed to provide convenience and speed. Retailers hoped it would usher in a new age of cost savings. Their thinking: why pay six employees when you could pay one to oversee customers at self-service registers, as they do their own labour of scanning and bagging for free?
While self-checkout technology has its theoretical selling points for both consumers and businesses, it mostly isn't living up to expectations. Customers are still queueing. They need store employees to help clear kiosk errors or check their identifications for age-restricted items. Stores still need to have workers on-hand to help them, and to service the machines.
The technology is, in some cases, more trouble than it's worth.
"It hasn't delivered anything that it promises," says Christopher Andrews, associate professor and chair of sociology at Drew University, US, and author of The Overworked Consumer: Self-Checkouts, Supermarkets, and the Do-It-Yourself Economy. "Stores saw this as the next frontier… If they could get the consumer to think that [self-checkout] was a preferable way to shop, then they could cut labour costs. But they're finding that people need help doing it, or that they'll steal stuff. They ended up realising that they're not saving money, they're losing money."

Unexpected Problems in the Bagging Area
Many retail companies have invested millions – if not billions – of dollars in self-checkout technology, which Andrews says was first developed during the 1980s, and started appearing in stores in the 1990s. They're not exactly cheap to get into stores: some experts estimate a four-kiosk system can run six figures.
Despite the cost to install them, many retailers are reversing course on the tech. Target, for instance, is restricting the number of items self-checkout customers can purchase at one time. Walmart has removed some self-checkout kiosks in certain stores to deter theft. In the UK, supermarket chain Booths has also cut down on the number of self-service kiosks in its stores, as customers say they're slow and unreliable.
Dollar General, one of the fastest-growing retailers in the US, is also re-thinking its strategy. In 2022, the discount chain leaned heavily into self-checkout technology – it's not uncommon to see only one or two employees staffing an entire Dollar General store in some areas. Despite the investment, they are now planning to increase the number of employees in stores "and in particular, the checkout area", according to the company's CEO, Todd Vasos.
"We had relied and started to rely too much this year on self-checkout in our stores," he said during the company's Q3 2023 earnings call on 7 December 2023. "We should be using self-checkout as a secondary checkout vehicle, not a primary." (Dollar General did not respond to the BBC's requests for comment).

Some retailers cite theft as a motivator for ditching the unstaffed tills. Customers may be more willing to simply swipe merchandise when using a self-service kiosk than they are when face-to-face with a human cashier. In addition to shrink concerns, experts say another failure of self-checkout technology is that, in many cases, it simply doesn't lead to the cost savings businesses hoped for. Just as Dollar General appears poised to add more employees to its check-out areas, presumably increasing staffing costs, other companies have done the same. Despite self-checkout kiosks becoming ubiquitous throughout the past decade or so, the US still has more than 3.3 million cashiers working around the nation, according to data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Humans or Machines?
Consumers want this technology to work, and welcomed it with open arms. However, years later, they're still queueing for tills; waiting for store-staff assistance with errors or age checks; and searching high and low for the PLU code of the Walla Walla Sweet Onions they're trying to purchase.
In a 2021 survey of 1,000 American shoppers, 60% of consumers said they prefer to use self-checkout over a staffed checkout aisle when given the choice, yet 67% of consumers have had the technology fail while trying to use it.

The bottom line is businesses want to cut costs, and shoppers want to get in and out of a store. If self-checkout isn't the answer, they'll find another avenue.
"It's not that self-checkout technology is good or bad, per se… [but] if we try self-checkout and realise we're not benefitting from it, we might switch back to not using it," says Amit Kumar, an assistant professor of marketing and psychology at the University of Texas, who studies consumer behaviour and decision-making.
That appears to be happening in many cases, as customers' frustrations with the technology persist. But Andrews says that while stores may change up their strategies – as seen with Dollar General and others – many large retail chains are likely to keep kiosks in stores due to sunk costs. "They spent billions putting it in stores, and are hoping they can still get the public to buy into it," he says.
Retailers may continue to rely on the technology, but many aren't putting all their farm-fresh eggs in the self-checkout basket. Instead, they're increasingly giving customers the option to choose between human and machine.
For the customers that do choose to do the labour themselves, there's one thing Andrews believes won't change. However ubiquitous the technology is, and however much consumers get used to using the kiosks, shoppers are likely to find themselves disappointed and frustrated most of the time.
"It was part of a larger experiment in retail in trying to socialise people into using it," he says. Simply, "customers hate it".
