It's so funny that Robert Walton says that he wants a good friend so badly, yet he is betrayed by his own theatrical way of writing at the eyes of a modern reader.

Because we know that he wants a great friendship, he repeats it a lot. Someone that could help him fill what he lacks as a person, yet the language to describe this desired man makes Robert sounds more like an eager romantic who just wants to be sweeped at his feet by the perfect man.

I don't know Robert, writing "I desire the company of a man who could sympathise with me, whose eyes would reply to mine. You may deem me romantic..." Then proceeding to describe all of the good qualities of this supposed man in such an eager manner, like sir... You are gay.

How can a room that must have seen every sordid and tragic act still remain so lifeless, he wonders.  Before he can think better of it, he already has his phone out and has Arthur on dial. He winces when he sees the time and moves to hang up, but finds the call is already answered. “Eames?” Arthur's voice comes from the speaker, croaky with sleep. “Sorry, love," he slips a hand over his eyes, "didn’t mean to wake you. Didn’t realise the time.”
