Divya had decided that since she'd missed the Halloween fun, she should show her face for the winter Solstice event. The magazine had kept her busy with its Christmas edition, so she was in desperate need of letting off some steam. She'd had a couple of drinks since arriving, mingling and schmoozing both with potential and established allies of the coven. The Effendi Elder found herself drawn to the window overlooking the frozen lake, smiling as she watched people glide or slip along the icy surface. Her father used to take her and Divaym ice skating between business trips, but that had been long ago.

She'd hoped it would be like riding a bike, the skill it took to remain balanced coming back to her with ease. Mustering what grace and composure she could, she pushed herself onto the lake. It started out great, a false sense of security as she made her way to the middle. As she looked down to see herself gliding on the ice, she began to wobble, which eventually led to a near fall. Divya let out something between a laugh and a cry as she quickly grabbed ahold of someone for support. A fit of tipsy giggles escaped her mouth as she made attempts to right her balance, "My goodness, I'm so sorry..."

Mouna Ragam (1986) is a romantic drama that I really enjoyed. And this particular dialogue by the female protagonist, Divya, reminded me of Devi from Never Have I Ever (2020 - 2023):

Translation: "I have many flaws - anger, stubbornness, arrogance, ego. I am not responsible or caring - I have many flaws like these. I'm telling you this because you should know about me."

Just like Devi, Divya is a brave and flawed woman, who marches to the beat of her own drum. Her story is very different from Devi's. But, I just wanted to celebrate two complex, female protagonists who also happen to be Tamil (and who end up finding men who love them exactly as they are).
