My apologies if Tumblr or I do something stupid when I try to post this. The keep reading link shows up on my laptop but not my phone. Ugh.

Summary: This takes place a few years in the future, during a Lykel family vacation from hell. However, Papa Bas just rolls with it and makes the best of a bad situation. Henry’s nickname for Bastien is “Bonk.” He came up with it when his mom and Bastien started dating, and it’s his silly way of shortening “Lieblings-Onkel.” Favorite Uncle

Gone Fishing It was the fourth straight day of rain during the Lykel family vacation from hell. Bastien and Rinda tried to keep the kids busy, but it was times like these when they felt the twelve-year age difference between Henry and Évelyne. Henry was a good sport, but he could only play Candyland and Cootie so many times. Rinda had enough. “It isn’t raining that bad right now. Maybe you and Henry could take the boat out but stay close to shore? And I’ll take Évelyne to a fast food restaurant with a play area. Or just a store where she can walk the aisles, pull things off shelves, and whine for things I won’t buy her. Anything has to be better than this.” Bastien arched a brow at his Tria, and Rinda laughed. “I know, Tiger. I’m the one who insisted that we take time away from civilization, but now I’m changing my mind. I was wrong and I’m calling a time out for everyone’s sanity. If Henry doesn’t get a chance to go fishing at all, you know he’s going to be upset. I promise I’ll bring shakes back for everyone.” Just then Évelyne teetered over, her curly hair an absolute disaster from the humidity. “Besides, you and Henry can’t be the only ones to enjoy the troll doll magic. We need to share our frizz with the world, right Krauses Mädchen?” Frizzy Girl “Should we put your hair up, or will you be my human barometer?” “Bar-ometer!” Bastien laughed and scooped up his daughter. “That’s my girl. Your hair is always beautiful, just like your mama’s. I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Évelyne squealed with delight and purposely rubbed her hair against her papa’s nose, causing him to double over with fake sneezes. “AT-CHOOOO! No! It tickles Niesen Monster!” Sneeze Monster “AT-CHOOO! AT-CHOOO! Please stop!” “Gesundheit!” Évelyne yelled, bobbing her head for extra emphasis.

. . . . . Bastien and Henry were a half mile from shore when a bolt of lightening streaked the sky and the torrential downpour hit them. “Fuck!” Bastien muttered under his breath as he and Henry scrambled to pull in their lines and get back to shore. When they finally got inside and dried off, Bastien made hot chocolate for them. “This sucks, Bonk. This vacation was the worst idea ever.” Bastien chuckled. “But at least we got a cabin. This would really suck if we were in tents. Besides, it’s never a bad idea when you get to spend time with your family.” Henry rolled his eyes. “Totally cheesy, Mr. Glass Half Full.” Bastien shrugged and booped Henry’s nose. “Let me try a different dad approach to a bad situation. Why did Humpty Dumpty have a great fall?” Henry eyed Bastien warily. “To make up for his miserable summer vacation.” “Bonk, no. Just. No.” “Why did the mummy go on vacation?” “Bonk, NO!” “He needed to unwind.” “No. No. No. Your dad jokes suck. I’m going to my room to stare at the wall. It’s more entertaining.” “What about the robot?” “NO! Still walking to my room.” Bastien was yelling to Henry’s retreating form. “He needed to RECHARGE HIS BATTERIES!”

. . . . . Ten minutes later Henry heard Bastien yelling for him. “Knuddelbär?” Cuddle Bear “Can you come in the bathroom please? I need your help.” Henry groaned. “I’m not pulling your finger. That only works with Évelyne, you goof.” He slogged to the bathroom and knocked on the door. “Bonk? Seriously, this is weird. What is it?” He pushed open the door, stood in shock for a moment, and burst into laughter. “You look stupid. What are you doing?”

Bastien was sitting on the bathroom counter, wearing a snorkeling mask and holding a fishing pole. He looked over at Henry. “I’m fishing. Want to join me?” Henry was wheezing from laughter. “Hold . . . hold on. In the toilet?” Bastien shrugged. “Why not?” Henry grinned and grabbed the fishing pole Bastien held out for him. He sat on the edge of the bathtub, pretending to cast out as the fishing line went into the toilet. “Why the snorkel mask?” “The way it’s raining, we’ll probably be underwater in hours. Besides. It can double as a gas mask if you fart.” “Do you have a mask for me?” “Actually, I think this one is yours.” Bastien took it off and offered it to Henry, but Henry laughed and brushed it away. “No, I’m good.” Bastien had a cooler in the corner, and he reached in and grabbed root beers for both of them. “So, I have a question for you.” Henry looked up. “If you’re American in the living room what are you in the bathroom?” Henry scrunched up his face in confusion. “Wait, what are you talking about?” Bastien snickered. “European.” It took Henry a minute to process what Bastien said before he groaned. “Mom’s a bad influence on you.” He was quiet a moment. “Why did the Cordonian Royal Guard sit on the toilet?” Bastien shook his head. “He was doing his DUTY.” Bastien had a wicked gleam in his eyes. “What did one piece of toilet paper say to the other?” “What?” “I feel really wiped.” Henry grinned. “How about this? Why did the ant fall off the toilet seat? Huh? Because he was PISSED OFF!” Bastien was cackling and slapping his knee. “Wait. I have another one. Why couldn't the toilet paper cross the road?” Henry was wiping tears from his eyes. “I don’t know. Why?” “It got stuck in a crack!” Henry blew root beer through his nose. “Ow. It hurts. That was SO STUPID! Ow, it’s still burning my nose. Okay, you win. Just. STOP!” Bastien and Henry spent the next hour talking and laughing during their “fishing trip.” “Hey Bonk? Why don’t we put some water and toys in the bathtub so mom and Évelyne can go fishing when they get back?” Bastien laughed and tousled Henry’s hair. “That’s a great idea. You’re a pretty awesome big brother. You know that, right?” Henry blushed and shrugged. “Well, you’re a pretty awesome dad. Even if your jokes suck.” Henry booped Bastien’s nose. “I love you, Bonk.” Bastien hugged Henry and kissed his head. “I love you too, Knuddelbär.”
