#Donald and Douglas speaking
A quick explenation why were a bit diffrent
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And a bit of a headcanon:
-Douglas takes part of Arts in college while Donald takes part of drama
-The reason why Douglas actually has eyebags and a bit longer hair is cause he mostly spends time drawing, and i meant by that he would take all night just to finish a piece
Thus makes Douglas have a bit of a problem with his health and usualy get sick most of the time
Donald tells Douglas that he need a break but Douglas didnt listen to him (cause ofc hes the older twin no one boss him around lol)
-One reason that Donald can change his hair is still unknown at this point and no one knows how he changes it (hes even confuse himself)

If you are fond of TTTE fandom, which dub do you like from the 12 main steam team?
The US or the UK? Because i saw a lot of people who likes the UK dub the most, what about you?
Well that's a good question :D
Thomas: the UK dub because the US dub of him is littlerly weird so yeah
Edward: the US voice bc he sounds very cute and calm
Henry: US dub bc i like Kerry Shale (my favorite voice actor)
Gordon: hmm.. I like the both dubs, honestly i don't know what is the deffrince between them
James: Of course the US dub but is of Kerry Shale because it fits him so much<333!!! (simp behavoir)
Percy: with the US dub or the UK one he stills a baby
Toby: the US dub bc i say so
Duck: he has the same voice of the two
Donald and Douglas: they have the same voice of the two either
Oliver and Toad: same as duck, donald and Douglas
Emily: the US dub baby, bc she looks so cute in it

Here's a question for yall since I'm curious
Characters like Duck and the Scottish Twins were absent from the show for years, right- it could be easy to assume we were just always missing them, and that they were just busy off screen.
But Duck specifically drawing attention to how he hasn't seen Donald and Douglas in ages in Lost Treasure, that to me feels more indicative of them truly being gone, because he is the most likely to have seen them on his little western line.
What do yall think? I'm a little enamored with the thought that they had been sent away for a year or more, perhaps on loan to a heritage railway in Scotland. And they come back, and Duck and Oliver are just so pleased to have them back at last. Or do yall think they were just bustling about off-screen, and yeah, it's just a cute nod to how they've been gone from the franchise for years. All takes are valid!
Of course I'm asking because you know, I would want to incorporate the time away into my shipping content 😏 absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that. Home is where the heart is, on the Little Western. 🖤💚

Fun/weird thing that I noticed, but y'all know how the DavenKids are named in alphabetical order, right?
Adam, Bree, Chase, Daniel.
And, assuming that there were failed androids before Marcus, he still fits into this.
Cool, so after M, what's the next letter in the alphabet?
It's N, right?
Cool, now, follow-up question, what's Donald and Tasha's daughter's name?
It's Naomi.

Alright I will admit it, I love the Scottish twins and I am done pretending that I don’t.
Ft. A doodle featuring a sickly Douglas and Donald taking care of him.

This was inspired by @audreythesquid ‘s art related to love me tender and my friend @just-a-douglas-simp-existing helping me stop being ashamed of my love for the Scottish twins!

Ttte head canons!! :
Tw: Mentions of 4b0se, bruises, angst, bullying.
Oliver is actually taller then Duck, the reason why I did this is because.. : in the model era, Oliver seemed to be taller then duck, by a inch. And that inspired me to make Duck, the shortest of the great western crew :D
The Scottish twins used to be very introverted, and quiet in Scotland, And if your asking "oh why cleo?? Why you make the scots like that?" It's because: I researched on google, and it said 'Twins are most likely not social.' So yeah! I wanted to add that in.
Edward used to act like Bill and Ben in his younger days, when he had his scottish accent, he used to trick the bigger engines A LOT. By hiding their coaches, trucks, and even tricking his old controller into thinking he did nothing wrong, now that he's older, hes more matured now.
Bill and Ben are Irish twins(Irish twins are twins that are not born on the same day!) Ben being born first, and after two days, Bill was born.
The flying Scotsman is sometimes called Scott.
Gordon is older then the Scotsman, Scott just likes to tease him a lot.
Duck gets a weird nostalgic feeling when someone calls him 'Montague'
James used to adopt stray cats, mostly kittens.
Douglas is the older twin and Donald is younger, so Douglas sometimes calls Donald ‘Little brother.’
Thomas actually likes Ryan, but he doesn't realize it yet, so whenever Ryan is near him, and starts talking to him, Thomas would get visibly nervous.
Toby sometimes makes snow angels, he finds it comforting somehow.
Percy is actually not the youngest, he's just age regressing.
Duck acts more mature then he's supposed to, since he's younger then Percy and the Scottish twins, and Duck somehow acts more mature then them.
Ryan is very clingy, and since Thomas is his '#1 idol', Ryan talks to him and helps him a lot, he doesn't show his clinginess much tho.
Henry actually hates loud noises, sometimes, when no one is paying attention to him and there's fireworks, he would run into the forest, and then just watch the fireworks from afar.
Rheneas likes to age regress a lot, he sometimes age regresses to 13-16, even if he's like a year younger then Skarloey, he doesn't shows it to others tho.
Skiff acts like the 4b0se of Sailor John didn't affect him, but it did, he flinches a lot to people near him lifting their hands up, he genuinely terrified by loud noises, and he has tons of bruises.
Duck has autism, most of the people on the railway know he's autistic.
Duncan acts rude because he used to be mistreated in the past, the bullying affected him so much, that he thinks, being mean is the key to stop people from being rude to him, and he used to be very kind, happy, and shy in the past too.
Skarloey finds it hard to focus sometimes.

Steamie AU - Numbers
Numbers can be like birthmarks to enigmas. Matching their loco's Appearing not long after they are born. However, this isn't always the case, early enigmas and ones of small classes would not have these birthmark names. Instead, they would be given a tattoo later on, sometimes they would still be a baby when it happened.
When Donald and Douglas first arrived on Sodor, not only did they remove the numbers of their locos, but also covered over their numbers. In the form of tattoos. This was back during the late 1950s. What the twins did would have been rather scandalous, if it had gotten out. It wasn't until the mid-1960s, when preservation kicked off, that tattoos amongst enigmas became a much more common site.
Over time locomotives get renumbered, and gain names. This can cause birthmark numbers to fade and 'freckle'. Leaving a sprinkle of freckles in the place where the number once was.
Sometimes, when renumbering they might be tattooed with their new numbers. But a lot of railways would just give them a passport-style-id instead.

Maybe there's some nuance I'm just not getting but I feel like Gordon's personality got messed up in the Japanese dub... I find it hard to believe a character who'd say "It isn't wrong, but we just don't do it" (referring to behaviour he considers 'tacky' and 'vulgar') would unironically refer to himself as ore-sama...........
It's like they took one look at him and went: wow! This looks familiar! I bet he loves karaoke!

Clay Jones, Claytoonz: The new GOP mantra
* * * *
LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
July 25, 2024 (Thursday)
Momentum continues to build behind Vice President Kamala Harris to become the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, and the national narrative as a whole has shifted.
Democrats appear to be generating significant enthusiasm among younger Americans. Yesterday, for the first time in their history, the March for Our Lives organization endorsed a presidential candidate: Kamala Harris. Students from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, organized March for Our Lives after the shooting there in 2018. Executive director Natalie Fall said that the organization “will work to mobilize young people across the country to support Vice President Harris and other down-ballot candidates, with a particular focus on the states and races where we can make up the margin of victory—in Arizona, New York, Michigan, and Florida.”
Andrea Hailey of Vote.org announced that in the 48 hours after President Biden said he would not accept the Democratic nomination, nearly 40,000 people registered to vote. That meant a daily increase in new registrations of almost 700%.
People are turning out for Harris in impressive numbers. In the hours after she launched her campaign, Win With Black Women rallied 44,000 Black women on Zoom and raised $1.6 million. On Monday, around 20,000 Black men rallied to raise $1.2 million. Tonight, challenged to “answer the call,” 164,000 white women joined an event that “broke Zoom” and raised more than $2 million and tens of thousands of new volunteers.
Another significant endorsement for Harris came yesterday from Geoff Duncan, the Republican former lieutenant governor of Georgia, who wrote on social media: “I’m committed to beating Donald Trump. The only vehicle left for me to do that with is the Democratic Party. If that requires me to vote for, speak for, or endorse [Kamala Harris] then count me in!” Duncan’s public announcement offers permission for other Georgia Republicans to make a similar shift. In 1964, South Carolina senator Strom Thurmond similarly paved the way for southern Democrats to vote for Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater.
Harris’s appearances are generating such enthusiasm from audiences that when she delivered the keynote address this morning at the convention of the American Federation of Teachers in Houston, Texas, the applause delayed her ability to begin. After a speech defending education and calling out the cuts to it in Project 2025, Harris ended by demonstrating that after decades of Democrats being accused of being anti-American, Trump’s denigration of the country has enabled the party to claim the position of being America’s defenders.
“When we vote, we make our voices heard,” Harris said. “So today, I ask you, AFT, are you ready to make your voices heard? Do we believe in freedom? Do we believe in opportunity? Do we believe in the promise of America? And are we ready to fight for it? And when we fight, we win! God bless you and God bless the United States of America.”
Today the Commerce Department reported that economic growth in the second quarter was higher than expected, coming in at 2.8%, thanks to higher spending driven by higher wages. The country’s changing momentum is showing in media stories hyping the booming economy Biden’s team tried for years to get traction on. “Full Employment is Joe Biden’s True Legacy” was the title of a story by Zachary Carter that appeared yesterday in Slate; CNN responded to today’s good economic news with an article by Bryan Mena titled: “The US economy is pulling off something historic.”
With Harris appearing to have sewn up the nomination, the question has turned to her vice presidential pick. That question is fueling the sense of excitement as potential choices are in front of cameras and on social media advocating Democratic positions and defending the United States from Trump’s denigration. Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro listed the economic gains of the past years, and said: “Trump, you’ve got to stop sh*t talking America. We’ve got to start standing tall and being patriotic and showing how much we love this amazing nation.”
The vice presidential hopefuls appear to be having some fun with showcasing their personalities, as Minnesota governor Tim Walz did in his video from the Minnesota State Fair where he and his daughter went on an extreme ride. So are social media users who have dug up old videos of, for example, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg explaining how he would pilot a small starfighter that had lost its auxiliary shields, or Arizona senator Mark Kelly’s identical twin brother Scott pranking a fellow astronaut on the Space Station with a gorilla suit Mark smuggled on board.
That sense of fun is an enormous relief after years of political weight, and it has spilled over into making fun of the Republican ticket, most notably with a false story that vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance wrote about—and I cannot believe I am typing this—having sex with a couch. The story is stupid, but worse are the denials of it, which have spread the story into populations that otherwise would likely not have seen it.
Just two weeks ago, Vance appeared to be the leader of the next generation of extremist MAGA Republicans, but now that calculation seems to have been hasty. Vance is a staunch opponent of abortion—the key issue in 2024—and he has been vocal in his disdain of women who have not given birth, saying in 2021, for example, that the U.S. was being run by “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.” He went on to say that people who don’t have children “don’t really have a direct stake” in the country.
Republican commentator Meghan McCain noted that Vance’s “comments are activating women across all sides, including my most conservative Trump supporting friends. These comments have caused real pain and are just innately unchristian.” Actor Jennifer Aniston, who tends to stay out of politics, posted: “I truly can’t believe this is coming from a potential VP of The United States.” Vance had called out Harris by name in those 2021 comments, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff’s ex-wife Kerstin Emhoff took to social media to defend Harris from Vance’s attacks on her as “childless,” calling her “a co-parent with Doug and I. She is loving, nurturing, fiercely protective and always present. I love our blended family and am grateful to have her in it.” Harris’s stepdaughter chimed in: “I love my three parents.”
Vance also ties the Republican ticket firmly to Project 2025. The Trump camp has worked to distance itself from Project 2025—not convincingly, since the two are obviously closely tied, but it turns out that Vance wrote the introduction for a forthcoming book by Heritage Foundation president Kevin Roberts, who was the lead author of Project 2025. The book appears to popularize that plan, right down to its endorsement of a “Second American Revolution,” and according to the book deal report, proceeds from the book will go to the Heritage Foundation “and aligned nonprofits.”
Now Vance’s words praising Project 2025 will be in print, just in time for the election. Yesterday, Trump posted: “I have nothing to do with, and know nothing about, Project 25 [sic]. The fact that I do is merely disinformation put out by the Radical Left Democrat Thugs. Do not believe them!”
Trump is clearly aware of, and concerned about, the changing narrative. This morning, he called in to Fox & Friends, saying, “We don’t need the votes. I have so many votes. I’m in Florida now…and every house has a Trump-Vance sign on it. Every single house…. It’s amazing the spirit…. This election has more spirit than I’ve ever seen ever before.” Tonight the Trump campaign proved their worry by backing out of debates with Harris, saying debates can’t be scheduled until she is the official nominee, although Biden was not the official nominee when they met in June.
The larger narrative shift has affected the media approach to Trump, who is accustomed to shaping perceptions as he wishes. Now, 12 days after the mass shooting at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, there is increasing media attention to the fact that there has still been no medical report on Trump’s injuries, although he wore a large bandage on his ear at the Republican National Convention and said at a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Saturday that he “took a bullet for democracy.”
Yesterday, FBI director Christopher Wray told Congress that it is not clear whether Trump was “grazed” by a bullet or by shrapnel, words that former federal prosecutor Joyce Vance called “FBI speak for, ‘it’s unlikely it was a bullet.’”
CNN chief medical consultant Dr. Sanjay Gupta noted last week that the people need a real medical evaluation of Trump’s injuries, explaining that “gunshot blasts near the head can cause injuries that aren’t immediately noticeable, such as bleeding in or on the brain, damage to the inner ear or even psychological trauma.” But, as Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo has noted, much of the press has kept mum about the story.
Media outlets have reported Wray’s testimony, though, and in a social media post today, Trump called on Wray, whom he appointed to head the FBI, to resign from his post for “LYING TO CONGRESS.” Tonight, he reiterated that “it was…a bullet that hit my ear, and hit it hard.”
Perhaps eager to get back to their districts, House Republicans canceled their expected votes on appropriations bills scheduled for next week and left town today for their August recess. The House will not reconvene until early September. The government’s fiscal year 2025 begins on October 1.

Double-Back

Gordon the Big Engine was feeling unwell. He was out of breath and his cylinders ached. The Fat Controller met him after the first few days with news.
“You are in need of a general repair”, he said, “Now, it’s nothing serious, and you’ll be back in about a week or two. James shall take you on his goods train later tomorrow.”
“Oh, superb…”, grunted Gordon as James gave him a smug look, “But who will take my express? Sure not little James or Henry, the holiday traffic’s too much for the likes of them…”
“Well…”, said the Fat Controller, “They’re too busy to help out, so I’ve decided to loan an… express diesel from BR.”
Vulgar noises greeted this, accompanied by loud wheeshes of steam, but they quickly subsided after a few stern looks from the Fat Controller. That didn’t mean the engines kept their grievances bottled up. James was the first to speak after the Fat Controller left.
“Honestly!”, he rapped, “Why does the Fat Controller insist on bringing these wretched, good for nothing diesels onto our railway!”
“I have no idea…” muttered BoCo, who was stood next to James.
James tried to recover, but everything he seemed to say made it worse, and eventually he just left it alone. The Scottish Twins continued.
“He’ll probably bring in a diesel from tha' West Coast Mainline”, said Donald, “Me ‘n Douggie met a whole load o’ new express diesels back in yon fifties.”
“Aye.” continued Douglas, “They were some o’ tha rudest diesels we ever met, kept on babbling aboot how easier and simpler they were tae use compared to uz steam engines, and I have no doubt this one will just the same.”
The engines hoped they were wrong.
They weren’t. The diesel arrived just after Gordon went away for his repairs. Her name was Centurion.  She was bigger than Bear and BoCo, big and boxy with 6 wheels on each bogie. She stared at the engines when she was readied for work in the morning.
“Ugh…”, she snorted, “Look at you all. Hours and you’re still not ready. All I need is a key and, like that, I’m off…”
“Yes.” drawled Duck, “That’s the first time we’ve heard a diesel say that. Are all mainland engines this unoriginal?”
“Why you little-”
It was just then that the twins puffed into the yard after snow ploughing. Centurion snorted at the twins.
“And wa’ do ye mean by tha’?” glowered Douglas.
“Oh, I just haven’t seen your kind in a while, let alone moving about! The last few of you were dealt with as my family arrived… I doubt the men missed them, obtuse old things. They never had to fuss around us diesels…”
Centurion then departed for her train. All the engines in the shouted after her, telling her just what they thought of her little display.
For all her poor social graces, Centurion worked well, keeping to time and treating the coaches well. She even hauled goods trains with little complaints or remarks. That, however, was saved for when she was off duty. The diesels on the Fat Controller’s railway had accepted the fact that they’d have to wait on the steam engines every so often. The mainlanders were right in that they had to have more fuss over them. If you asked Centurion, however, you would think that it would take hours to complete a steam engine's “weird rituals”. She’d complain at having to wait on engines to “get steam up” and how time consuming it was taking on both coal and water, not to mention the soot and ash disposal wagons she’d gag at while passing by. The biggest source of ire for her, however, was the turntable.
“Imagine!”, she said one morning, “Needing a great big thing just to work in two directions!”
“Oi!”, spluttered James, “We need it! It’s unsafe to travel backwards at speed!”
“Aye!”, added Donald, “We’ll gladly tak tha’ extra time if it guarantees the safety of uz and whatever we’re pulling!”
“Us diesels don’t need such silly things!”, she giggled, “We work well forwards and backwards!”
She switched from her “A” end to her “B” end as she said this, and purred off to the morning express.
A few days afterward, Centurion was once again being readied. It would be one of her last runs on Sodor, with Gordon’s repairs being nearly completed. She started rather quickly, and purred forward. Only Duck had pressure, the others still being steamed, and she honked her horn cheekily. They all shot her glares, but she didn’t care. She certainly did care when she stopped suddenly and looked up. Duck was still on the turntable.
“Awwww, taking a little spin are we, pannier?”, she mocked, “How cute… now get a move on, I’ll not have my last day here messed up. I thought tank engines didn’t even need these stupid turny-things!”
“Turntable. I still have to get out of the sheds you know!”
The turntable seemed to go even slower as Duck slowly turned to face Centurion, a snarky grin on his face. That seemed to be the last straw. As soon as the turntable lined up with Centurion’s road, she shot forwards. But her road wasn’t in line with any of the exit roads, and the turntable kept on moving. Or tried to, at least. Centurion yelped as her front went with the table while her rear stayed put before the table hissed and stopped abruptly. Duck, Centurion, and the mainline engines were now trapped.
The Fat Controller came to inspect the scene and grimaced. No one was hurt, and Centurion wasn’t even damaged (Though she did feel very uncomfortable!).
“I must say, I’m disappointed…”, began the Fat Controller, “Your visit was going so well. Now, almost all of our mainline engines are trapped, and the express will leave late!”
Centurion stammered an apology and looked towards her buffers.
The Fat Controller then looked around.
“Hmmm… where are the twins?”, he asked.
“Donald should be back with the return goods from the mainland”, answered Duck, “But, beg pardon sir, I doubt he’ll be strong enough to pull the express on his own. Err… if you were thinking that, that is.”
“Yes Duck, I was.” chuckled the Fat Controller, “But he and Douglas should manage just fine…”
At that moment Donald bustled in tender-first, which was expected. He halted outside the sheds and gaped as his smokebox was being cleaned out. Another whistle hailed the arrival of Douglas, also tender first.
“Hullo lads!”, he called, “Turntable up at Arlesbrough’s frozen solid and… I see tha’ there’s issues wi’ this one too…”
The Fat Controller thought hard as the twins were being filled in on the situation. He had hoped at least Douglas was facing the right way. But the express hadn’t even had it’s coaches shunted yet and it was to leave soon. This was the only real option. He explained the plan to the twins.
“Now I trust you two to take it easy.” He said, “The works have a spare engine in case anything happens, so just get the train there.”
“Aye Sirr!”, Chorused the Twins as they made their way to the station.
The passengers were surprised as the twins got their coaches ready and ran around in front, both backwards. Still, they got in as quickly as they could, and the guard blew his whistle.
“Let’s go, Douggie!”, called Donald.
“Aye!”, replied Douglas, and the two set off, still backwards.
They got up to a decent pace, or as decent as their crews allowed, and made light work of the express. They didn’t have much of a good view in front, and their crews got whipped with wind and frost, but it was tolerable. Even backwards, the twins knew the line well, and speed up and slowed down with each straight or curve. Even the hill wasn’t a challenge for them. They made it to the works station in good time and came off the train ready for one of the diesels to take over. However…
“The points and turntable are frozen solid!”, said the yard manager, “It’ll take too long to thaw them out! Can you two continue?”
“Heh, it’s nae problem!”
The twins quickly took on water and coal before running back to the train. They started with a will and got to the other end of the line in fine style. The mainland diesels looked in disbelief at the twins, who only smiled in return. The Fat Controller, who was on the train, congratulated them, and the two went off for a rest.
After a few hours, all was righted. Centurion was recovered and the mainline engines were let out. Gordon came home the next day as well, and gave his thanks to the twins for “Playing Tank Engine”. Centurion quietly went home to the mainland, with a newfound respect for steam engines and their “weird rituals”. All the same, she thought she’d never come back to Sodor. But that proved to be very wrong, indeed.

You ever realize the fact that Donald never actually changed the name of Davenport Industries.
It was founded by him AND Douglas. They were the Davenport BROTHERS.
But even after everything went down with the kids. he didn't change the name.
I'm just. I don't know, I'm just feeling a lot of emotions about these idiots right now, man.

Assorted Character Headcanons: 8-11
Duck:
Duck may have given up his dreams of going out to sea, but he really enjoys the salty spray and sea breeze. Several lines along the GWR went along the coast, and it makes him nostalgic. Arlesburgh is one of his favorite places to be because of it; he finds the hustle and bustle of the harbor to be delightful. When he just wants a moment to think, he'll find a good spot to park himself overlooking the water.
Donald:
Donald is blessed with the ability to both hum and hold a tune. He can be heard singing up and down the line in his distinctive Scottish accent, and everyone who hears him can't help but smile. He knows several Scottish songs (and he has his favorites) but seems to have also picked up some Irish songs, notably of the sea shanty and drinking song variety, likely from visitors who take the local boat service from Kirk Ronan to Dublin and vice versa.
Douglas:
Douglas has always been a rather superstitious sort. He's long believed that it wasn't just luck that allowed him to escape with his brother to Sodor, and given Scotland's own array of tales about ghosts, spirits, and fey, he's rather careful when it comes to showing proper respect. Maybe that's why his safety record is significantly better than anyone else's on the Little Western.
Oliver:
Once Oliver settled into his work on the Arlesburgh branch (and after his mishaps), he found that he wasn't really sure what to do with himself. His reality for the past several weeks had been endless fear and worry as he tried to escape and scavenge what he could, followed by several more weeks of trying to fit in and prove himself and the consequences thereof. Now that things have settled, though, he feels somewhat lost, like he's not sure what to do or feel, and he still has nightmares from his experiences. Duck, Donald, and Douglas all help him out during this time, but it's actually Donald who gives him the idea that works: get to know people. Talk to them. Become friends with people on the island; it's the best thing they can recommend for making a new place become home. So Oliver does, and he really starts bonding with the island's residents. Making new acquaintences helps, but he still doesn't feel all together yet.
One day, in the late 1970s, he meets a young psychologist named Christine. She's visiting from London, and had taken a great interest in sapient engines. After learning the gist of his story, she asks if she could speak to him at length once the workday is over, and Oliver agrees and receives permission to do so. After the interview, she reveals that she's currently studying cognitive behavioral therapy. She explains what that is, how it might help Oliver, and that she would love to see if the same principles could be applied to the mental health of engines. Naturally, Oliver and his crew are wary of anything "mental health" related, but once Christine phrases it as mental exercises to try and help Oliver have a better quality of life and ease his nightmares, they're more receptive. Once again with Sir Topham Hatt's permission, Christine goes on leave from her work in London to stay long-term on Sodor. Her work with Oliver would prove instrumental in advancing mental health on the island, for both engines and humans, and Oliver himself would become a mental health advocate among the engines of the NWR.

My Thoughts on "Emily in the middle"
Based off a conversation I had w/@mean-scarlet-deceiver in the comment section of this post of theirs, because Tumblr comments have a word limit that I wasn't aware of, and I'm in the mood to speak my mind on this.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alright. So. Emily in the middle. The last appearance of Donald and Douglas in the TV show, and imo, a pretty crappy one too. The Caledonian twins, (Donald in particular) are my favourite TTTE characters for multiple reasons, and there are many things in this episode which irritated or straight up pissed me off. And I've been holding these feelings in for months.
Now, to be fair, I did like some things about this episode. The visuals are gorgeous, and I love how they brought back the twins' season 20 theme from 'Love me tender.' They also carried over this thing introduced (and heavily featured) in 'Love me tender' where Donald acts like he knows better than Douglas, much to the latter's frustration. I REALLY wish they could elaborate further on this in another episode. Like maybe this behavior has been a constant but only now is it getting worse. Maybe this behaviour is related to the fact that Donald had to smuggle Douglas into Sodor, and started thinking of himself as the one who had to take charge and keep them both safe. Maybe it's from some sorta paranoia Donald developed regarding their status on Sodor, and for some time after the events of "Deputation," he still felt the need to protect and ensure that Douglas would remain on Sodor. (I don't know, I just came up with this). And the episode concept itself can be considered humorous, but imo, it would have been better with Bill, Ben and maybe Boco, Mavis or Edward.
First off, might as well get the obvious out of they way. The twins are HORRIBLY out of character in this episode. From the get-go, they're arguing about anything and everything, to the detriment of them and the engines around them. The TV show, especially in the CGI era, unfortunately started shifting them towards the very overdone trope of "They're twins and they argue a ton," but they went the whole way with it on this episode and it's flipping awful to watch. Especially at the end, when poor Emily got derailed by a snowball (while we're on the subject of that how the flying fuck did that thing get so big so quickly?) and they started blaming each other for the accident instead of helping or apologizing to her. Also doing seriously irresponsible things like stopping a HUGE ASS train on the main line and blocking the Express, and stopping the same train on a steep incline and leaving Emily to hold it while they bickered and chased each other up the hill. I mean honestly, they were acting more like Bill and Ben: Indistinguishable twins who frequently argue with each other over petty bullsh!t. The Caledonian Twins are absolute badasses who get sh!t done and clearly love each other very much. So why ruin them like this, Mattel?!
Second off.....this is something to do with a specific event (Brace yourselves for a long-ass explanation). In "Break Van," one of the notable events is Donald ramming a signal box (I'll explain). It's played off as an accident, but the book HEAVILY implies that this was intentional, with the line "But Donald didn't say what he was sorry for. We know, don't we?" and Douglas saying "Anyone would think, that Donald had his accident on purpose!" That's a huge wink wink from the book to the readers. And when you stop and think about it, Donald's motivation for this becomes clear. Think about everything that has happened to them thus far. Smuggling Douglas onto Sodor gave both of them a lot to lose, Douglas especially. By the time "Break Van" happens, Douglas has screwed up twice. And then the cherry on the top comes in the form of that motherf%^king Spiteful Brake Van making him late. At this point, the twins KNOW that Douglas is in TFC's black books and would be the one sent home after the trials if nothing is done. So to make TFC's decision more difficult, Douglas would either have to do better, or Donald would have to do worse. Donald chooses the latter option and it works, with TFC explicitly confirming this.
Now, In EITM, Douglas has been telling Emily about various incidents involving Donald from past seasons, and eventually start talking about the signal box incident. And given the significance of that event........it felt pretty darn scummy to hear them making light of that. That made me feel uncomfortable. Like... it's less "heehee, Donald is clumsy" and more "Donald purposefully injured himself and destroyed NWR property in an effort to keep his brother safe." I can see why Donald would be especially angry about this. It couldn't have been painless ramming into that signal box or fun getting lectured by Sir Topham Hatt, only for his brother to make light of it by laughing about it behind his back with another engine. And while we're on the topic, considering the bond between these brothers you cannot, in ANY WAY, convince me that Douglas would EVER talk sh!t about his brother behind his back to another engine. EVER.
Last off.....god, I REALLY feel for Emily in this episode. She may not be one of my absolute favourite characters, but she didn't deserve this, at all. I actually do like the idea of Donald, Douglas and Emily being a fun little trio, and I wish that it could have been done here.

Ok wow, this turned out way longer than I expected for my first written Tumblr post. I hope people actually read this. If you reached the end, thanks for reading.
Also, if you wanna see something funny related to EITM, @jammyjams1910 did a fan dub of some scenes from the episode which had me laughing my ass off.

aka my favorite arc for my Donald (I'll probably write this soon)
he's so conflicted, bitter, and angry at Douglas for doing this to him and many other things. he doesn't want to love. especially not something that looks like his brother. he doesn't get much of a choice.
also the baby rats are all nonverbal at this point because Douglas never saw it fit to teach them how to speak, nor do Adam and Bree understand much of what Donald says, only his tones and body language (which makes it much harder on Donald because he can look/sound much angrier than he is from the grief he's stumbling through) Chase has perfect comprehension of what he says though (for obvious reasons) and helps communicate it to the others through their special language that they developed while in the warehouse, which is one of the reasons he's the first Donald bonded with (which is really funny that his bestie is two years old)
