Propaganda
Ava Gardner (The Killers, The Barefoot Contessa)— She's so goddamn hot. Her and Frank Sinatra could've sandwiched me and I would've thanked them for the privilege
Dorothy Dandridge (Carmen Jones, Porgy and Bess, Island in the Sun)— The first Black actress to ever be nominated for best actress, Dorothy Dandridge was a groundbreaking actress who deserved better. She started her career as a singer, being put in a song-and-dance duo with her sister by their stage mother, and singing in soundies (I highly recommend cow cow boogie, it's adorable), proto-music videos. She started appearing as a featured singer in films. Her star was on the rise and she soon became a star solo performer. She continued acting, but had limited options because she refused to do stereotypical roles. She finally landed a starring role in Bright Road in 1953, but it was the movie Carmen Jones that truly cemented her as a star and sex symbol. Not to sound cheesy, but she literally sizzles on screen. You can't help but understand how poor Harry Belafonte gets caught in her trap, just look at her. This is the role that got her that Oscar nom. She didn't win cause I mean #OscarsSoWhite, but she was a sensation and continued starring in films, despite troubles in her life (including a shitty director bf who fucked with her career and a traumatizing pregnancy/delivery). Outside of her filmwork, she was also an activist, fighting against racism. She left behind an amazing legacy, and continues to inspire many actresses to this day (including also very hot first (and only) black woman to win best actress, Halle Berry).
This is round 4 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Ava Gardner:
Tumblr media
Ava Gardner is one of my favorite actresses of all time. Although a lot of her roles in movies are about her being beautiful and nothing else, there are some films where her acting truly shines.

HER FACE. LOOK AT IT. Also was a life long supporter of civil rights and a member of the NAACP, had lots of fun love affairs with other stars, bullfighters, married several times but was also happy in between to just have lovers and was unapologetically herself.
I literally gasp every time I see her.
Tumblr media
Between 1942 and 1964, Ava Gardner was credited in no less 50 films, and is still considered by some to be the most beautiful actresses that ever graced the silver screen. Despite life-long insecurities regarding her talent as an actress, she weathered public scandal, industry hostility, and outright condemnation by the Catholic Church with fearless grace. She would later in life talk candidly about the reality and pain of living through two (studio approved!!) abortions during her short marriage to Frank Sinatra, and while the two of them could not make their relationship work, they remained in each other’s lives for nearly 30 years. She would forever describe herself as a small-town girl who just got lucky, but always felt like a beautiful outsider.
Tumblr media
Really genuinely one of the most beautiful human beings I have ever seen. An autodidact. Had amazing chemistry with Gregory Peck to the point where I do think about watching On The Beach again sometimes because they're so good together even though that movie did destroy me. Was a great femme fatale in many movies.
Tumblr media
Dorothy Dandridge propaganda:
Tumblr media
Beautiful actress and hand-working and talented singer, she's especially notable for the number of firsts she accomplished such as the first African-American woman to receive a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress and the first African-American woman to appear on the cover of Life magazine.
Tumblr media
Dorothy Dandridge was a classic Hollywood triple threat, singing, dancing, and acting with the best of them. She was the first African American nominated for an academy award for Best Actress for her role in Carmen Jones and she was just jaw-droppingly beautiful.
youtube
this og of black film needs no introduction (star on the hollywood walk of fame anyone?), voice of an angel, heavenly features, just an overall stunning lady :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at her!!! She is so unbelievably charismatic in Carmen, it’s insane. Her chemistry with Harry Belafonte is off the charts, and every time she puts another outdoor [sic] on it’s like ‘oh god this is a whole new level of stunning’ 🥵. She was so so talented, when she’s on screen I genuinely dare you to tear your eyes away from her. Deserves to be known so much better but due to Hollywood racism and a tough personal life she didn’t make it as big as she should have done. She’s incredible.
First Black actress to be nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress! Was the first choice for the role of Cleopatra that went to Elizabeth Taylor (we were ROBBED).

On 10 December 1951, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh attended the “Midnight Matinee” gala at the London Coliseum, in aid of the National Playing Fields Association. There they met some icons, including Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Dorothy Kirsten, and Rhonda Fleming who participated in the charity event.

A Joycean Odyssey
Above, James Joyce and his longtime partner Nora Barnacle, in Zurich, 1930. They would marry the following year when Joyce established residency in the UK. (SUNY Buffalo) It began 103 years ago when the American literary magazine The Little Review published its latest installment of James Joyce’s landmark novel Ulysses—a chapter that featured an account of a wanker on a beach. My posts
Initially I wrote, “I ran my mouth about the Watcher streaming/paywall situation because I make bad decisions,” but I think the post has actually gone over well? In short, I want to see them succeed but I am also deeply fuckin’ baffled. I so desperately want the tea about what was really going on behind all this, and how the guys are reacting to it now, and I really hope they can turn this around somehow.
Side note, Friday was CHAOTIC.
Reblogs of interest
The Hot Vintage Lady Polls are escalating in round four. We got to a point where I posted propaganda for Ava Gardner AND Dorothy Dandridge in their matchup. Probably the biggest scandal of round three was Vivien Leigh getting knocked out, but she’s now High Chancellor of the Shadow Realm. The most contentious matchup this time seems to be Judy Garland vs Natalie Wood, which is nearly 50/50 as of this writing. But keep your eye on Hedy Lamarr, who may have Mifune Sweep energy.
(I think I love these brackets for the same reason I love Dracula Daily: it’s delightful that thousands of people on Tumblr actually have deeply-held opinions about things from many decades ago, and if they didn’t before, they do now.)

Hozier Watch 2024: “Why Would You Be Loved” has arrived on the Wasteland, Baby! special edition. I like this post about how that song is in conversation with “No Plan,” one of my favorites. (I wrote about “Movement” a while ago, but I could have fully inflicted an essay on you about how “No Plan” pulled me out of my six years of hiding from the internet. Anyway, it’s a great album from a few years ago, check it out if you haven’t.)
Generally I keep my mouth shut about Taylor Swift, but the new songs sure have some lyrics. I love Florence Welch, but I’m scared.
You’ve heard of spoon theory, now check out spell slot theory

if you like spies are forever, richard siken poetry, or just generally queer history/stories, you’re gonna LOVE “lavender scare”, a new limited series actual play podcast that i’m producing. our team is almost entirely trans, is entirely queer, and we’re all pretty new to the field. it uses bully pulpit’s game “fiasco”, as well as my own game “conflict of interest”. i’ve been working on this since february and i cannot wait to see how people like it. if you have a moment, give our trailer a listen and drop us a follow on spotify!

Tom + “Fiona Apple’s When The Pawn…” album?
thank you very much for the ask, anon!
now look, i'm not going to claim that many of the tracks on this album aren't extremely tmr coded.
yes, he was born to slither moodily around london soundtracked by lyrics such as if you keep on killing you could get me to settle, the shame is manifest in my resistance to your love, and i want your warmth but it will only make me colder when it's over.
yes, paper bag, limp, i know and fast as you can are tomarrymort anthems.
[and also, more seriously, many of fiona apple's songs refer to themes - trauma, grief, mental illness, etc. - which are obviously things any voldemort enjoyer has to grapple with his own experience of.]
but, while i recognise the fact that tom makes a great alt-pop girly, the thing i'm really into when it comes both to thinking about the sort of media he'd like and the sort of things which you can slap on playlists about him is the fact that so much of the pop culture of his youth - so, let's say the period 1926-1956, when he's born until when he disappears after killing hepzibah smith - is just so un-voldemort-ish that it's funny to imagine that he's [however reluctantly] into it.
he loves skulking dark corners of cinemas watching a screwball comedy or the latest fred and ginger banger, sipping a tiki cocktail and flicking through a bit of p.g. wodehouse. he loves a cryptic crossword and a detective novel. he's furious - even if he'd rather die than admit it - that the sort of parties his pureblood friends force him to go to are still stuck in the age of the quadrille and polka, when he'd prefer some big-band swing. he is of the opinion that harry looks like montgomery clift and bellatrix looks like ava gardner.

[graphic design is my passion.]
he brought years of careful plans forward to begin the first war in an incandescent wave of fury on 23 june 1969, to the great confusion of dumbledore, the ministry, and the death eaters, who all thought they had years before it all went off.
nobody ever twigged that lord voldemort could no longer see any point in trying to preserve even something about the muggle world the day after judy garland died.
[he is, after all, a paid-up friend of dorothy...]

13 Books
tagged by @nerdgatehobbit - thank you!
The last book I read: Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett, which I had mixed feelings about. Absolutely loved the premise and take on the fae, but thought the romance was terribly bland. Sometimes I feel like authors forget that the love interests are actually meant to like each other right? Not just annoy each other until suddenly they're in love?
A book I recommend: A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles, which I also read recently and really enjoyed. The setup is better than the payoff, imo, but for me it was the right amount of whimscal and referential without becoming too twee. Don't expect actual historical fiction though, this is more about the vibes.
A book that I couldn't put down: Piranesi by Susanna Clarke, also one that I would highly recommend! I went in knowing nothing other than it had been suggested as something that would appeal to me, and was so glad I did, able to let the narrative unfold without expectations or preconceptions - this one will stay with me for a while. The Beauty of the House is immeasurable; it’s Kindness infinite!
A book I've read twice (or more): The Scarlet Pimpernel by the Baroness Orczy is one I've read many times since I was a teenager, and have an enduring affection for despite its faults.
A book from my TBR: It's a very long list! One that’s been on there a while is 1001 Arabian Nights, which I actually did start but part 1 alone is over 1000 pages and I had to return it to the library, so it’s technically back on the TBR list.
A book I've put down: I don't often DNF books, even if I'm not feeling it I'll usually put it down intending to get back to it later. But one that’s been put aside for a while is Myrren’s Gift by Fiona Mackintosh, lent to me by my mother because “it’s got witches and magic” but the first chapter is about two dudes and their rivalry which didn’t exactly capture me.
A book on my wish list: The Annotated Alice which is Martin Gardner's annotated version of Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll. Sadly not available in my local library and I've promised myself not to buy any new books until I get further through the pile I actually own.
A favourite book from childhood: Rowan of Rin by Emily Rodda - a seminal work of my childhood and extremely foundational to my love of fantasy. Severely underrated children's book! I also loved the sequel Rowan and the Travellers but didn't read the rest of the series until adulthood so they're not as burned into my psyche.
A book you would give to a friend: It's hard because people are into different things and interests don't always overlap. Maybe The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, since it’s pretty accessible and should be compelling to a wide range of readers, as well as being one that I have long loved.
The most books you own by a single author: Probably Jane Austen, so - 6?
A nonfiction book you own: I own a lot of history books, a few biographies, old textbooks, literary analysis, and even some travel memoirs. One I have held onto for a long time is Almost French by Sarah Turnbull, an Australian woman exploring the culture shock of Paris after moving to marry her French partner.
What are you currently reading:. I always try to have one fiction and one non-fiction book on the go at any one time - at the moment that's Burn it Down: Power, Complicity, and a call for change in Hollywood by Maureen Ryan, and The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne.
What are you planning to read next: Next up it will probably be Judi Dench’s Shakespeare: The man who pays the rent. I’m also revisiting the original Oz books by L Frank Baum and am up to book 4: Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz.
Tagging anyone who wants to do this - I love seeing what other people are reading!

The Committee for the First Amendment
We, the undersigned, as American Citizens who believe in constitutional democratic government, are disgusted and outraged by the continuing attempt of the House Committee on Un-American Activities to smear the Motion Picture Industry.
We hold that these hearings are morally wrong because:
      Any investigation into the political beliefs of the individual is contrary to the basic principles of our democracy;
Any attempt to curb freedom of expression and to set arbitrary standards of Americanism is in itself disloyal to both the spirit and the letter of our Constitution.

Porfirio Rubirosa (1909-1965) was a Dominican diplomat, political assassin, race car driver, soldier, polo player, international playboy and all-around jet-setter. In general, he might best be described as a real-lfe James Bond. Rubirosa's five wives included two of the richest women in the world (tobacco heiress, Doris Duke and Woolworth heiress, Barbara Hutton). In addition to his marriages, he was lnvolved with Ava Gardner, Marilyn Monroe, Eartha Kitt, Joan Crawford, Dolores del Rio, Dorothy Dandridge, Lupe Velez, Veronica Lake, Kim Novak, Judy Garland, Eva Peron, Rita Hayworth, and most scandalously, Zsa Zsa Gabor. When they began their very public affair, Zsa Zsa was still married to George Sanders. Sanders had no trouble at all obtaining a divorce and naming Rubirosa as the cause. With all of Rubirosa’s romances, word spread of his extraordinarily large penis. Waiters at Maxim’s in Paris were inspired to name their ridicuously large pepper-mills “Rubirosas”, a name they are still called today. When Zsa Zsa was queried about the truth to the rumors, she abruptly dismissed them as false. “Dahh-link, it was no bigger than my forearm”.  (How many of you just looked at your forearm)?
