Two Times Abraham Van Helsing Saved Arthur Holmwood from the Vampire Lucy Westenra
Manga Classics: Dracula | Art by Virginia Nitouhei | Story Adaptation by Stacy King
September 20 - Lucy's deathbed moments before she dies
"Arthur! Oh, my love, I am so glad you have come! Kiss me!" Arthur bent eagerly over to kiss her; but at that instant Van Helsing, who, like me, had been startled by her voice, swooped upon him, and catching him by the neck with both hands, dragged him back with a fury of strength which I never thought he could have possessed, and actually hurled him almost across the room. "Not for your life!" he said; "not for your living soul and hers!" And he stood between them like a lion at bay.
September 29 - Lucy's tomb after her death and resurrection
"Come to me, Arthur. Leave these others and come to me. My arms are hungry for you. Come, and we can rest together. Come, my husband, come!" There was something diabolically sweet in her tones—something of the tingling of glass when struck—which rang through the brains even of us who heard the words addressed to another. As for Arthur, he seemed under a spell; moving his hands from his face, he opened wide his arms. She was leaping for them, when Van Helsing sprang forward and held between them his little golden crucifix.

First page of the Dracula manga, and I’m just honing in on Mina and how she’s holding Lucy with that alert expression.

(Also, Jack, relax, you’ll give yourself a headache scowling so ferociously.)

In retrospect, this part (from October 3rd) is so funny
Tumblr media
The manga also made it very intense and menacing (I only have the French edition, sorry)
Tumblr media
Dracula made this great speech, about how much of a danger he really is and how he'll use Mina to get them all etc. and then...
he just goes back to his dirt box and does nothing. They killed him just like that.
Why is this guy so popular? He's the biggest loser in the entire book

Right?? VH is the one character who gets a full physical description and the mangaka turns into generic moustache man and 24/7 serious😔 where's my man's whimsy and red hair and struggle to get the local slang and everything else that distinguishes him from the English ppl
((This is related to the Dracula mangaka doing Van Helsing dirty))
Right?? It's such a generic character design. I feel like not many people give him his dues and just strip his personality. Like Jack's design isn't my favourite but it's still inspired, I feel. But yeah what about Van Helsing's iconic dialogue??? He has SO MUCH personality in the book and in the manga it's just like...basic bitch exposition. LOL

Two Times a Westenra Died at the Hands of Dracula in Lucy Westenra's Bed
Manga Classics: Dracula | Art by Virginia Nitouhei | Story Adaptation by Stacy King
September 17 - Mrs Westenra
The air seems full of specks, floating and circling in the draught from the window, and the lights burn blue and dim. What am I to do? God shield me from harm this night! I shall hide this paper in my breast, where they shall find it when they come to lay me out. My dear mother gone! It is time that I go too.
September 20 - Lucy Westenra
Death had given back part of her beauty, for her brow and cheeks had recovered some of their flowing lines; even the lips had lost their deadly pallor. It was as if the blood, no longer needed for the working of the heart, had gone to make the harshness of death as little rude as might be.
