Hi hi hi, Tej! I have been traveling or hosting family for what feels like all summer, so I am very much looking forward to having some time at home this weekend!

(Also there is zero rush or pressure to join me in Western Stucky hell, the author is the slowest updater ever 🙃)

SO my Bucky & Wanda fic features some AoU canon divergence and is forever the plot bunny that got away. I dredged up so much Wanda characterization (a lot of it is her POV) and did so much Sokovia world building (because Sokovian politics and geography make absolutely no sense). But it just doesn't work! Arg. I do love repurposing WIPs, though, so maybe revisiting this one will help me find a home for these two! Here's a snippet for you:

They hear the new volunteer first: a stream of English profanity that fractures into French, into German, into Russian. Then they don’t hear him say anything at all.  He looks half-dead by the time he’s tossed into the cage next to Wanda’s. Still, they didn’t pay him any mind. Plenty of volunteers pass through this place. Only the twins remain.  When this one keeps breathing—though he does little else—they discuss him in hushed whispers, only in what fractured Yiddish they picked up from their Grandma.  “Don’t look at him. Don’t talk to him,” Pietro instructs her. “​​He’s dangerous.” Pietro spent enough time around boxing rings with Oleg to know a fighter when he sees one, even one who keeps silent and still for days on end. Wanda lets him exercise his protectiveness. She doesn’t have the heart to tell him that she already learned, long ago, how to read the posture of violence on men.  Little permeates the basement sublevel where they’re kept, making it difficult to determine the passage of time, let alone what passes in the world above. But not long before the volunteer arrived, panic seeped in, carried unmistakably in the nervous chatter and shaky hands of the drones who dote on them.  Project Insight means nothing to Wanda, but whatever it is—was—ushers in an unmistakable shift. She knows as well as Pietro how to spot the signs of a regime in decline.

Submastober Day 18 - Meet

*Runs in at the last moment, slapping this down on the desk* Here it is!!! Day 18! Whew! Cutting it a bit close because of work again ahaha. I left my note about this at work, so hopefully this is just as good.

It's something of an AU of the Bot!Emmet AU? Er, someone was talking about Amnesia, and I've been thinking about a particularly cruel ds game I have called Theresia. So, this is less an AU, and more me putting those particular versions of Kudari and Nobori into a different set-piece. So, it's not canon to their AU, and not an AU I'm gonna pursue. Just wanted to play with the thoughts ☆⌒(*＾-゜)v

Also, I've been wanting to write some horror for a while, so this is just a little warmup for that >:3

Title: Meet

Word count: 698

Waking up with a thudding headache, Nobori turned his head, squinting at the lit lamp on the bedside table. A note sat there, covered in familiar script. Although every inch of his body rejected the notion of moving, the curiosity of what such a note could contain forced him up. A light shimmer sparkled in the dust on the table - it had not been touched for some time, it seemed.

Sitting up, he blinked to slowly adjust his eyes to the light. He was in some sort of bedroom, the walls lined with built in bookcases. The lamp at his side was the only light for the room - perhaps the owner read exclusively in bed.

He knew not who the owner was, but upon further reflection, he also knew not who *he* was.

Turning to the note, he picked it up to angle it for proper reading. "To Nobori," It read. "He will find you." Signed by Nobori, as well. Despite everything else being fuzzy, he knew that's who he was. Furrowing his eyebrows, the concerning matter of this note apparently having been penned by himself was overshadowed by the ominous message.

"Who is ... He?" he wondered aloud. And such a threat from himself? It was odd, but nothing else made sense. Placing the note back on the side table, he swung his legs off the side. Hard-soled shoes hitting the carpet (really? What kind of barbarian was he, resting in a bed with his shoes on?), he looked down in alarm at a faint crunching sound.

Broken bits of glass were on the floor, right under where his feet would have gone. Barbarian he may be, at least he had not stepped directly into glass with bare or cloth covered feet. Standing up, he turned to see the greater part of a smashed whiskey glass had rolled underneath the bed.

Another thing he could not recall, but now that he was up, he felt it best to investigate his surroundings. He seemed to be dressed in a long black coat with a high collar, though without taking it off he could find nothing more identifying. Moving as silently as his heavy shoes would allow him, he opened the door to the small room just the smallest bit, peeking outside.

He was inside some sort of large Western style mansion, on the second floor perhaps judging from the banisters lining the other side of the path in front of him. Taking a cautious step outside, he frowned even deeper. He continued to not recognize where he was, and it was becoming quite troubling. Surely, he should have at least some inkling of where he was.

A measured, heavy step creaked a floorboard behind him, and the one sentence note leapt back to the forefront of his mind. A shiver tightened his back, and the urge to hide himself sprung to every nerve along his spine. Quickly moving down the hallway, he looked for another room to duck into, hoping that it had more than one exit.

Luck was once again on his side, and his large stride brought him to the other door in no time. Just as he was opening the door, he heard the heavy footsteps outside, coming to a stop in front of the door he'd just entered the room from. Holding his breath, to avoid any additional unnecessary sound, he pulled the door towards himself, and slipped through the smallest opening he could.

As he shut the door, the other began to open. And through the slim openings of both doors combined, he saw a flash of white and silver. Over the creak of the door, he heard "-bori."

Heart ricocheting against his ribcage, he locked the door with shaky hands. Could that have been the "He" that the note warned about? Just as certain as when he'd determined *he* was Nobori, he knew that had to be who the note was written about.

Well. He wasn't going to be a sitting duck. No, if this He wanted to find him, he would certainly not make it easy. Although he didn't know his way around this odd Manor, he would find his way out before he was found.

On Being Fannish

An answer to a question I got on Patreon last month.

A question I recently received:

I saw your Tumblr post about The Eagle and I went back to your AO3 page to see the other fandoms you’d written in. I’m curious as to whether there’s a fandom you’ve written in that you didn’t particularly follow or like the canon? And why (can be more than 1 answer) For me I think about Due South. I tried to get into to show but it wasn’t happening. But I was engrossed in the works (and fanzines).

And my answer:

Thank you for asking this! I think there's a few different ways I could answer this question, and I'm going to try all of them.

The larger, more general big-picture question, for me, is: what qualities about a fandom make me feel fannish about it? This is something I have actually thought about enough over the years to have a decent answer for. One big plus is if the fandom has a lot of canon -- I mean, I'm in Marvel Comics fandom now, and my first fandom was Star Trek, so when I say I like fandoms with a lot of canon, I mean a lot of canon. I like to have lots of facts and little details to be able to play around with; that's the kind of thing that gets my writing brain going. Single TV shows without extended universes are probably just enough canon, but I would be happier with more. Single books are not usually enough canon to make my fannish brain light up, but book series can. Single movies are not usually enough.

Similarly, I also really like when a fandom has multiple versions in different media -- like, if it's a book series and a TV show and a movie and a comic, or whatever. I like being able to compare and contrast different versions of plots and characters, and, yes, I do find the Marvel multiverse absolutely delightful. But, say, I probably wouldn't have been into The Eagle as long as I was if there hadn't been so much other ancillary canon -- not only was there the movie, there was also the book The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff, and the 1970s BBC miniseries that also adapted the book, and there were the rest of Sutcliff's novels, many of which were set in the same universe (The Dolphin Ring Cycle), and then that even ties into, well, being a giant classical history and language nerd and getting to be fannish, more or less, about Ancient Rome. (I learned Latin so I could write a Roman AU. No, really.) If The Eagle had just been a movie and nothing else, with no other related things, I probably wouldn't have been very interested.

There's also another important quality that I like to see in fandoms I really get fannish about, creatively fannish, and this is going to sound deeply weird when I say it, but this is the best way I can think of to phrase it: they have to be mediocre. They can't be bad, exactly, because if they are bad then I'm not going to like them at all, but they can't be too good, because if they're too good, I can't really do anything with them. Take Babylon 5 as an example. I happen to love Babylon 5. I watched it when I was originally airing, I've watched it multiple times in reruns, I own copies of the scripts and a bunch of the tie-in novels and all the DVDs. You get the idea. I used to be glued to the  Lurker's Guide and rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.moderated. And as a fan, I love it, but I can't really create anything about it. It's too good. It's a sprawling, epic, five-year arc, from before arc-based TV was cool, with what I consider to be amazing characters and a gripping plot. But there's no room. What kind of story could I possibly tell? Sure, maybe I could write a couple of vignettes. I'm pretty sure I have. But I can't tell a B5 story that's equal to the glory of B5. B5 already did that. And it wrapped up the arc on the way out. There's not really much left to do.

And I know we say that no one hates comics like comics fans do, but when I say comics are mediocre I mean that with affection. Sure, there are so many amazing stories that I love with my entire heart. But there are also things I wish they had done differently, and gaps that canon never explored -- and that, that's the kind of thing that gets my fannish brain going, if I can look at canon and think, okay, this but more. And then I can do that. There's room to play around! If I want to rewrite Civil War but add more UST between Steve and Tony, I can do that! Everyone can do that!

And then there's the more specific version of the question: what fandoms do I like the fandom for but not the canon? I have been in a lot of fandoms over the years, and I'm willing to read in fandoms I don't know as long as the fic is good, so that often means I've read a lot of fic in big slash fandoms without being into the canon all that much. I've read a bunch of Teen Wolf slash, I've never seen the show in my life, and I'm not likely to start. I only made it through Season 1 of Merlin but I still read the fic sometimes. I have zero interest in hockey but sometimes I read the Hockey RPF AUs. I've read a bunch of SGA fic but am kind of meh about the actual show. You get the idea. Sometimes I read a bunch of fic and get a new fandom. Sometimes I just get the fic.

And then there's your actual question: have I written in fandoms where I didn't like the canon? I'd have to say generally not. My fandom journey is a little weird because I spent about ten years lurking and not writing anything and not really able to finish anything -- this started back in the late 90s when the big Western slash fandoms were The Sentinel, Due South, Highlander, X-Files, and maybe Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, and it felt like everyone in fandom was in some combination of the above. And in all those fandoms, I liked the canon (I think I would change my mind about TS if I rewatched it now, though) and I liked the fandom -- I just didn't write any fic because I couldn't figure out how to start and finish a story. So the fact that I have barely any dS stories doesn't mean I hated dS; it means I just wasn't writing anything back when I was really into dS. And then one day a switch flipped in my brain, or something, and I wrote a 90,000-word Professionals story and it just went on from there.

I do love Due South in particular, though; it was the fandom I met my wife in, because we both shipped Fraser/Kowalski and liked to hang out on AOL Instant Messenger and talk about fandom. And then fourteen years later we got married.

Nähkästchenplauderei

For those who didn’t know, that’s German. Normally it would be “aus dem Nähkästchen plaudern” which literally translates to “to talk out of the sewing box”. It’s a common phrase in Germany. Means something like “to spill some beans” or “to catch up on all the gossip”or “to share private information”.

Reason why I’m telling you this?

It’s me, Elena. This is a new part of my blog now. I want to involve all of you more in my daily writing and and the related funny stories, problems or ideas and inspirations. Maybe that’s interesting for you. Maybe it’s just a therapeutic exercise for me, when I’m (not) in the mood to write. Not sure yet. xD

I’ll call it “Nähkästchenplauderei” because I talk about me and writing fanfic but not really about their content. I’ll give you some insider stories about the fanfics I wrote/will write. Funny things. What happened to me during writing it, what gave me inspiration and how I do my research or what is important to me about a certain story and why I’m writing it. The daily life (cough *and struggle* cough) of a writer. If you’re not interested in these pieces of information, then you’ll see just the heading and you’ll know ‘Aaaah, that’s not a story I can read so that’s not interesting for me’. So it’s easier for you to skip. But I thought this could be interesting for you. I want to get to know you more and you can always laugh with me or smack your forehead because of my craziness. This could be fun and I am encouraging you to discuss themes or to tell me your opinion or own experiences. Of course, I hope that many of you take part. ❤️

A new passion - Or the story of me buying a guitar on Amazon at 1am

I always do a lot of research for my stories. I know some authors hate it, but I love doing research. It’s like playing detective and investigating while educating myself further. I always do Pinterest boards (I can share them with you, if you want) for my series because looking at the pictures and the links inspires me during writing. The ‘Simple Man Series’ is Set in an alternative universe where Jensen is a Country singer. I had no idea about country music, to be honest. I got all my knowledge about it from watching ‘Walk the line’ but that’s it. Obviously, I needed to do research! I created a Spotify playlist for the series (which I will link as soon as it’s uploaded).

When I wrote Suspirium or collected pictures for my Pinterest boards I always listened to it. Somehow I fell in love with this kind of music. I never played an instrument because I didn’t have the patience. I played to flute in fifth grade, because it was part of the Music class. We even got grades for playing it. Let me tell you, it was a disaster! Always got Ds. Although I got an A one time. Every time I practiced the flute, my dog started to howl. You see, it really was  awful. I believe that’s why I lost the interest in playing an instrument. I still went to the choir, though, because I loved singing (still do). I always said, if I had the patience I’d love to learn the piano or the guitar, because these are basic instruments and you can play everything on them.

Guess what? I sat there and was writing Suspirium when an idea started to from in my head. There are dozens of Corona online lessons for the guitar, beginner models of guitars aren’t that expensive and you can still sell them or use them as decoration. Normally, I overthink everything. I need ages to make an decision, normally weeks or months till I lost the interest. So I did my research. Which model? Acoustic, western or concert? Which size? Guitar scale? How do I identify a quality product? Best YouTube channels? Best apps?

Found a black one and I immediately fell in love with it. And guess what? It’ll arrive by tomorrow afternoon! :D I really did it and I’m a bit proud of myself for not overthinking it! I’m looking forward to learning every song of artists I love. Adele, Pink, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin Park, Train, Oasis, James Arthur, Tom Walker, Lewis Capaldi, James Blunt, Bruno Mars, Coldplay, Shawn Mendes, John Legend, Common Linnets, Lumineers and thousands more. Of course, some of my new Country faves, too. 

My first song will either be ‘Simple Man’ because the story was inspired by it and it was the first song that I’ve heard Jensen sing or ‘Hey there Delilah’ because I love that one right now. It’s my current catchy tune.

These will be followed by ‘The One that got away’ by Pink and ‘Bonfire heart’ by James Blunt. If these four aren’t too difficult, of course... I’ll keep you updated. :D

The story behind Suspirium - Or as I like to call it, the story of reviving a more than dead language.

I have that idea since I’ve started this blog some time ago. I wasn’t sure if I should make it a Dean, Sam or Cas story, so I brought my arguments up and you could decide which professor you want, remember? As soon as you chose Sam, I knew that he would be a Latin Prof. That’s based on the canon in the series and my preferences. Sam is the best in Latin in the entire series. And I am able to read, translate AND EVEN SPEAK Latin, so it’s something I can relate to. A great subject, although I know that the opinions on Latin are different. 

I can speak five languages (German - my mother tongue, English, Spanish, Dutch and Latin, I’d like to learn French soon) and I personally think Latin’s a beautiful language. Of course, it doesn’t sound as beautiful and elegant as French (although French has its origin in Latin). But a language is a lot more than the emphasis. In one of the first chaps of Suspirium Sam and Reader discuss the beauty of Latin.

“Latin is the language of law, architecture and engineering, the military, science, philosophy, religion and - of particular interest here - the language of a flourishing literature which for centuries served as a model for all Western literature. The Latin of literature speaks of love and war in hundreds of masterpieces, reflects on the body and soul, develops theories about the meaning of life and the tasks of man, about the fate of the soul and the nature of matter, sings of the beauty of nature, the meaning of friendship, the pain of losing all that is dear to one; and it criticizes depravity, ponders death, the arbitrariness of power, violence and cruelty. It creates inner images, puts emotions into words, formulates ideas about the world and social life. Latin is the language of the relationship between the one and everything.” Suspirium, Chapter 3

Roman poets are more than two millennia dead, BUT the themes they wrote about (Love, pain, friendship and braveness, also sex...) are still actual in our society. They stood the test of time. A language where no ‘thank you’ exists, just a ‘to be thankful’. This language is mysterious, its culture unbelievable nowadays. It’s like an enigma that wants to be solved - or not, depends on you and if you learn your vocabulary. Trust me, I had to learn that the hard way in seventh grade. ;) 

Sam is basically my old Latin teacher. He uses the same methods and tells the same things. He makes jokes, adds additional information and makes his students question the meaning behind the poems and stories.  Sometimes I even used words my teacher said to us. I looked up some of my Latin notes and use that for the lectures. It’s a lot of fun and that’s where I get my inspiration from. A big thank you to my teacher. This story would not work out without him always encouraging me and explaining everything to me, even if he had to do it three times. Gratiam habeo, magister. :D

arranged marriage au: a malex fic set post-alighting where the pod squad got out of their pods but none of them got adopted and they had a very YA novel upbringing constantly on the run from Project Shepherd and Jesse Manes and managed to survive until their species came to find them. suddenly the whole planet has to confront the fact that aliens not only exist, but that the US has known about this for decades. years after this, the aliens want to forge a more permanent, friendly alliance with Earth, and Earth is on board because they want that sweet sweet alien tech. enter Alex, on the cusp of honourable discharge, who was the only member of his family not involved in Project Shepherd, and who is the perfect candidate for this diplomatic partnership that is definitely not a marriage but everyone knows it’s low-key a marriage. the aliens ask for multiple candidates, there’s a long selection process, and the cream of the crop are sent up to the alien base on the moon to meet the alien side of this partnership: enter Michael. BASICALLY I wanted an arranged marriage au with all the diplomatic shit that a partnership between two species would realistically involve, with concessions and gains on both sides and a huge amount of pressure riding on the whole thing. I’m also kind of fixated on not going the Antar route so...I might end up making the outlines of an alien language, but we’ll see.

attack dog au: super sci-fi, set in space in the distant future. the pod squad’s species is almost extinct, and a few of them still ride around with the remnants of their species’ greatest sin/asset in them: genetic programming. Michael unknowingly has the remnants of loyalty programming, and in a chance encounter, latches onto Alex, who feeds that part of him also unknowingly. an incredibly co-dependent but surprisingly healthy relationship is the result. they end up telepathically bonded to each other to the extent that if one of them dies, the other will also die, but they kind of don’t mind.

ds au: a sequel to Good At Loving You which I posted a snippet of here.

malexa hdm au: so I wanted to write another daemon au, and then I wanted to make it a malexa western, but I can’t do research for historical fic so I decided to set it in the actual HDM universe (Lyra’s universe) so I didn’t have to do so much of that research. so it’s a western, but in a world not entirely like ours. Alex and Maria marry young, when Jesse demands that Alex marry or he won’t sponsor his enlistment. it’s not a love match, but they’re best friends, and they know this is a good deal for both of them. they have a happy marriage for many years and eventually move with Mimi to Roswell and meet Michael, who is perfect for both of them. cue happy polyamorous love!

maribel roller derby au: I started this before S2 aired and I do want to finish it because idc if my maribel dreams have been jossed - this is a human au, so Isobel and Maria aren’t related at all. the fic starts up some time after Noah’s been put away for serious crimes and Isobel’s in therapy to deal with the fallout, because her entire life fell apart. she’s in a group therapy session with Alex, who mentions that he’s a coach for the local roller derby team. Isobel’s interested and ends up joining their next round of fresh meat. she loves it, becomes besties with fellow newbie Cam, and she and Maria get together! sweet and fun!

sedoretu au: this is almost finished, it just needs an ending. you can find the explanation for what a sedoretu is in detail here, but in quick summary it’s a four-person marriage from some of Ursula K. Le Guin’s short stories. idk who the hell will read this, because the worldbuilding is a little complicated, but I got the idea in my head and couldn’t get it out. in a malex scenario, like this fic is, a marriage can’t just have Michael and Alex in it - it needs two women too, and for Alex, who would have to have a sexual relationship with one of them, this is something of a panic-inducing worry. but obviously it’ll all be fine in the end.

ALRIGHT. HERE’S THE SCOOP ON GENE CHROMOS FUCKING DAWKINS, OOH-RAH!

Backstory

Gene was born in Middle Knot to parents Lenn’e and Robert Dawkins. They were both scientists. Her mother specialized in botany while Robert specialized in both botany and studying those that suffered from DOOMs. From an early age, they both expected Gene to get into a science field because it meant future security as scientists were rare to come by and well wanted by the UCA and other communities.

 As Gene grew older, her likes became drastically different from that of her parents. Gene wanted to be an explorer when she was a child, and the closest career she figured she could get to that was becoming a porter when she was old enough. When Gene learned about the rigorous requirements to become one, she struggled with it but dedicated much time to developing her strength and endurance so that when she finally came of age, she could apply. It resulted in her not keeping up with the studies her parents wanted her to get educated in. 

As Gene grew up, her parents and her clashed over her future which resulted in Gene having a falling out with them both (more so her mother than father as she was closer to him) and Gene left Middle Knot after getting accepted to a new porter industry called Brisk HARPY. During the training program for new recruits, Homo Demens had taken out Middle Knot leaving Gene depressed for months as she never got to reconcile with her parents. Nonetheless, Gene became a porter like she dreamed about and after the BTs and Timefall had disappeared following Amelie severing her connection to Sam, Gene got a once in a lifetime opportunity as a porter to re-explore the world and see how it changed, since most humans lived in underground facilities following the Death Stranding. 

(In an AU fanfic I’m writing called DS: Rewind, a bit of her history is changed, notably with her parents. They did some pretty fucked up things, to put it mildly. Canon wise for me, my fanfic Sky of Atoms is the true deal when it comes to her life/story.)

Sky of Atoms

Two years later while on a delivery run and getting injured, she bumps into Higgs who had been in self-exile since leaving the beach. Higgs ends up saving Gene from an encounter with a Homo Demens member and MULEs, which results in them striking an odd relationship with each other in which Gene hooks Higgs up with goods he hasn’t had in ages in exchange for credits. At this point, Gene is trying to get her Pioneer Pass through the UCA so she can legally explore the Far North (Canada and what’s left of it). The only way she can do so is by getting enough credits to purchase one, and only porters are allowed to get these passes due to the danger among other strict requirements.

Gene ends up getting a high priority delivery that she is supposed to give to scientists in the East (she works in the Western part of the US). Gene tells Higgs about her trip and soon enough, they both come face to face with Homo Demens along with a new leader of the group, Deeter. Homo Demens first ransacks Higgs’s new hideout he had built for himself, and force him to rejoin. They go after Gene, wanting to get the package she is delivering due to its importance and they manage to corner her. Higgs plays along but then helps Gene escape, earning the wrath of his past colleagues. With Higgs’s previous experience as a porter and knowing how the terrorists work, and understanding they won’t stop trying to get Gene nor the package, Higgs decides to join her on the journey. 

Gene and Higgs team up to deliver the package to the UCA in the East. They eventually come to find out that Gene is delivering a secure virus known as BT Plague, something that had wiped out most colonies along with the West Coast in Washington State areas. Gene and Higgs start to bond more during the trip, learning about each others pasts, and Higgs begins to repent for his previous actions and slowly starts to change for the better. All the while, Gene has no idea that Homo Demens was the terrorist group that blew up Middle Knot along with her family, and that Higgs had instigated it.

Also here’s a few pics of her I’ve drawn. They aren’t that great, but yeah. I purposefully left Gene up to interpretation in my work so people could imagine her however they wished, but this is how I personally envisioned her. The second one is a hint at something that occurs during DS: Rewind.
