"Canadian scientists have developed a blood test and portable device that can determine the onset of sepsis faster and more accurately than existing methods.
Published today [May 27, 2025] in Nature Communications, the test is more than 90 per cent accurate at identifying those at high risk of developing sepsis and represents a major milestone in the way doctors will evaluate and treat sepsis.
âSepsis accounts for roughly 20 per cent of all global deaths,â said lead author Dr. Claudia dos Santos, a critical care physician and scientist at St. Michaelâs Hospital. âOur test could be a powerful game changer, allowing physicians to quickly identify and treat patients before they begin to rapidly deteriorate.â
Sepsis is the bodyâs extreme reaction to an infection, causing the immune system to start attacking oneâs own organs and tissues. It can lead to organ failure and death if not treated quickly. Predicting sepsis is difficult: early symptoms are non-specific, and current tests can take up to 18 hours and require specialized labs. This delay before treatment increases the chance of death by nearly eight per cent per hour.
[Note: The up to 18 hour testing window for sepsis is a huge cause of sepsis-related mortality, because septic shock can kill in as little as 12 hours, long before the tests are even done.]
[Analytical] AI helps predict sepsis
Examining blood samples from more than 3,000 hospital patients with suspected sepsis, researchers from UBC and Sepset, a UBC spin-off biotechnology company, used machine learning to identify a six-gene expression signature âSepsetâ that predicted sepsis nine times out of 10, and well before a formal diagnosis. With 248 additional blood samples using RT-PCR, (Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction), a common hospital laboratory technique, the test was 94 per cent accurate in detecting early-stage sepsis in patients whose condition was about to worsen.
âThis demonstrates the immense value of AI in analyzing extremely complex data to identify the important genes for predicting sepsis and writing an algorithm that predicts sepsis risk with high accuracy,â said co-author Dr. Bob Hancock, UBC professor of microbiology and immunology and CEO of Sepset.
Bringing the test to point of care
To bring the test closer to the bedside, the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) developed a portable device they called PowerBlade that uses a drop of blood and an automated sequence of steps to efficiently detect sepsis. Tested with 30 patients, the device was 92 per cent accurate in identifying patients at high risk of sepsis and 89 per cent accurate in ruling out those not at risk.
âPowerBlade delivered results in under three hours. Such a device can make treatment possible wherever a patient may be, including in the emergency room or remote health care units,â said Dr. Hancock.
âBy combining cutting-edge microfluidic research with interdisciplinary collaboration across engineering, biology, and medicine, the Centre for Research and Applications in Fluidic Technologies (CRAFT) enables rapid, portable, and accessible testing solutions,â said co-author Dr. Teodor Veres, of the NRCâs Medical Devices Research Centre and CRAFT co-director. CRAFT, a joint venture between the University of Toronto, Unity Health Toronto and the NRC, accelerates the development of innovative devices that can bring high-quality diagnostics to the point of care.
Dr. Hancockâs team, including UBC research associate and co-author Dr. Evan Haney, has also started commercial development of the Sepset signature. âThese tests detect the early warnings of sepsis, allowing physicians to act quickly to treat the patient, rather than waiting until the damage is done,â said Dr. Haney."

E-learning content Development Company in Hyderabad Code and Pixels
E-Content development
At Code and Pixels, we believe that great training begins with great content.
Code and Pixels provides customised and current learning content that makes you stay competitive â right from knowledge transfer of company processes and systems to product information. Such technically heavy and complex content becomes a challenge for the trainer to deliver and difficult for end users to consume in conventional training formats. Hence,

We develop custom E-learning content which is:
Sound using instructional design principles and pedagogy
Compliant with international E-learning standards
A combination of multiple media â games, quizzes, tests, simulations, video, animation, audio and graphics.
Compatible and runs on any standard Learning Management System (LMS)
Highly interactive and enables tracking and scoring of each learnerâs progress
Multilingual
We employ a multitude of technologies and tools like graphics, animations, audio-visuals, interactive games and activities that help in giving the right information in the right manner to the right audience.
Mobile Learning/HTML 5
We are living in a multi-device world. We now have options to deliver eLearning using a wide variety of devices such as desktops, laptops, tablets and smart phones. Whether it is for smart phones or tablets â using platforms like Android, BlackBerry or iOSâ we develop any kind of solution which suits your mobile learning needs perfectly.

What Is HTML5?
HTML5 is the newest hyper text markup language for websites from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The first draft was made public in 2008, but not much happened until 2011. In 2011, HTML5 was released and people started writing about it and using it, but the support in different browsers was still poor. Today all major browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, IE) offer HTML5 support, therefore the newest HTML technology can be used at its best today.
Major browsers
IE9+, FF4+, Safari5+, Opera11+, Chrome10+, Blackberry Browser, Silk
Platforms
iOS, Android, ChromeOS, BlackberryOS, Symbian, Windows Mobile 7.5+
Libraries
Webkit (Google, Apple, etc.), Gecko (Mozilla), Trident (Microsoft), Presto (Opera)
A reality indeed. As HTML5âs impact continues to ripple, many companies are dealing with the necessity of abandoning Flash applications. HTML5 is more flexible, allows movement, doesnât affect SEO and doesnât need a plug-in.

The migration of Flash eLearning courses to HTML5
eLearning, Training, Media organizations andmarketing departments of all kinds of companies have huge volumes of Interactive Flash content that has traditionally been consumed on desktops. With the rapid proliferation of smart phones and tablets, enterprises are faced with the prospect of their existing content becoming obsolete, since popular mobile platforms donât support Interactive Flash.
While new content can be developed on a platform an industry standard format like HTML5, ground-up redevelopment of existing Interactive Flash content for mobile devices is not an option for most enterprises. What they need is a high-quality yet rapid solution for migrating their legacy of Interactive Flash content to HTML5.
Flash to HTML5 Migration
We shall take your existing Interactive Flash content and use the Flash to HTML Framework to re-purpose it to make it usable and HTML5 content that is suitable for a variety of devices including desktops, smart phones & tablets.
Powered by HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript, our Flash to HTML5 framework enables us to accelerate speed-to-market for the new HTML5 content while preserving the richness of the original Flash content.
The new HTML5 content is able to fulfill the greater demands on usability posed by the varying screen sizes and resolutions of mobile devices. Recognizing that mobile devices donât always have the same processing horsepower of desktops, our migration/conversion process leverages our framework to ensure that the repurposed HTML5 can perform on the most popular mobile platforms.
The framework adheres to content standards and supports various fundamental interactive behaviors like programmed workflows, directional information, enhanced content Menus, Multimedia Content Delivering, 2D Animations, Voice Synchronization, Interactivity, Status Bar, Volume Controllers, Slide Bar, Bookmark, Search, Standard navigation features i.e. Next, Previous, Menu amongst several others
With mobile devices being used and preferred for numerous multimedia applications, we shouldnât forget something that Apple first pointed out. Flash does use too much processing and battery power; something that makes it disadvantageous. So migration to HTML becomes unavoidable.
In a continuously changing and fast paced environment, we canât chain users to their desks and offices. So the creation of HTML5 eLearning applications, training material, presentations etc. or the conversion of Flash to HTML for mobile devices has become inevitable.

Parallels between Byler and the canon couple from "Anne with an E"
Warning, there are a lot of spoilers here! And I apologize in advance if you find mistakes in the text, I'm still learning English O_o
Hi everyone!! Last month, I watched the series "Anne with an E" for the second time, and during my second viewing I decided to approach the romantic line of the main characters from a different angle. After many analyses of Byler, I learned to analyze relationships in cinema, and this case really surprised me on the good side! Let's talk with you about the parallels between Mike and Will with Ann and Gilbert, which help to make sure that Byler will soon become a canon :)
"Anne with an E" is a Canadian TV series, the first season of which was released in 2017 (8 months before the release of season 2 of Stranger Things). The main role in it was played by actress Amibeth McNulty, who also played the role of Vickie in season 4 of Stranger Things. And this is not the only important connection of this series with ST! At the end of the first season, Hopper was reading a book to Sara in the hospital, and that book was "Anne of Green Gables" (the Netflix series was based on this book)

Then in episode 3 of season 2, he reads the same book for Eleven.

The main romantic line in "Anne ..." develops between Anne and Gilbert over the course of 3 years (13-16) and it is narrated through such tropes as: from friends to lovers, slowburn, a love triangle, and a trope in which both characters think that their feelings for each other are unrequited, although in fact this is not the case. All of these relationship constructions are also applicable in the case of the Byler.
Direct parallels can be drawn between the characters:
Will = Anne

â Creative and sensitive teenagers from medium-income families who were bullied by their peers. They both talk a lot next to people they feel comfortable with, both have a self-built little castle in the forest where they retire during a difficult period and can feel safe without fear that someone will judge them (and later these castles were destroyed at both). There is a scene where Anne runs into her wooden house and cries there, very similar to Will's scene after a fight in the rain.

Ann and Will both told their mothers (in Anne's case, the foster mother) that they are "not going to fall in love" although the line of their romantic attachment to Gilbert and Mike is already developing according to the idea of the plot. Another interesting correspondence between these two characters is that they both helped people dear to them with their romantic relationships, while they themselves did not want it. Anne read the letters that her foster father's old friend had sent him, and without telling him about it, she decided to send her answers on his behalf because she thought they were deeply in love, and her father "just didn't know what to say". As a result, her father found out about it and talked to her about how he hadn't read his friend's letters because he didn't want a relationship with her, he just wasn't in love with her anymore and wasn't ready to change his life. Does it remind you of anything? Will also used Anne's "tactics", revealing his feelings to Mike on behalf of El, only he used a painting and not letters.
And one more take.... Anne's so-called mentor was aunt Josephine. They were in a good relationship and she gave her advice about her life and love. Josephine was also a lesbian. I want to say that this is also a possible parallel, because in the fifth season we are definitely waiting for the interaction of Will and Robin.
Mike = Gilbert

â curly black-haired guy from a more affluent family, who often acts as a leader and has some authority as a smart student. He liked Anne as soon as she joined their school and he tried to win her attention, but Anne knew that her friend liked him, so she carefully avoided Gilbert (although she also liked him). This gives us another coincidence: Anne, like Will, believes that she does not deserve love and avoids her feelings in order for other people to be happy. The main similarity between Mike and Gilbert is that they both stand at the center of a "love triangle."
Due to misunderstandings that have occurred between him and Ann, Gilbert begins to think that his love for her is not mutual and decides to marry Winifred (represents El in our case). Winifred is a girl from a rich family whom he met quite recently, and if Gilbert marries her, then her father will give him the opportunity to study at a prestigious medical college, which he has long dreamed of. Everyone around him approved of the idea of him and Winnie getting married, everyone expected it from Gilbert. Their wedding, unlike a relationship with a village red-haired orphan girl, could have brought him social approval, just as Mike and Eleven's relationship could have brought Mike social approval and entrenched his image of a "normal heterosexual".
But Gilbert doesn't love Winifred the way she loves him. Therefore, shortly before their wedding, he confesses to her that in fact his heart will always belong to Anne and that for this he is ready to give up his dream. And although their breakup was sad for Winnie, Gilbert explained the reasons to her as tactfully as possible, saying that she deserved someone much better than him. All of this also goes well with Willelmike.
To declare his love to Anne again, Gilbert writes her a letter and leaves it in her room while no one is at home. He writes that he and Winnie are not getting married, that he has always loved only Anne, and at the end he signs "Love, Gilbert." LOVE, GILBERT. Where have we heard this before? That's right, Mike's letters... If anything, I absolutely believe in the Lettergate theory, and that's also one of the reasons I'm confident in it.
Then there is confusion, Ann thinks Gilbert is mocking her feelings, and tears up the letter, and Gilbert goes to a less prestigious medical college. Now they are both sure that their feelings are not mutual, and even resigned to their failure, BUT! Anne meets Winnie, who tells her that she and Gilbert broke up and that he confessed his love for Anne to her.
Meanwhile, Gilbert meets Anne's best friend on the train, who loudly told Gilbert everything she thinks about him and "opened his eyes." She also mentions a love letter that Anne left some time ago, in the same way Gilbert left in her room later. Anne's letter was also unread, and the phrase "What letter, Diana, what letter?" appears. Don't you think it's very similar to a possible scene from s5 of ST with "What painting?"
In general, they ended up running to each other and touchingly reunited, after which there was a sensual kiss that the audience had been waiting for for so long. Unfortunately, the series ended there, but according to the canons of the book, they lived happily ever after, married and had many children, as befits such old love stories.
The main plot is not about Anne's love story, but about her growing up, other problems and events in their village (as in the case of Stranger things), so this line between the characters unfolds slowly and throughout the series, and Anne with Gilbert open up about their feelings and kiss only in the last minutes of the last episode.
It seems to me that there are too many coincidences to be coincidences. All of this inevitably leads to Byler endgame, if you look at everything from a cinematic point of view. Absolutely the same techniques were used: framing, phrases, lighting, musical accompaniment. When watching "Anne..." viewers have never denied the fact that there are feelings between Anne and Gilbert, although they were not revealed directly until last season. And all because Anne and Gilbert are a heterosexual couple, and such couples unfortunately turn out to be more pleasant and understandable to the average viewer. But they turned out to be a really good ship, and I'm even glad that the Duffer brothers were inspired by this setting.
So if the Shirbert is canon, then Byler will soon become canon!

AK Press made some of their e-books free for a little while. These are the free ones.

An exploration of how emergent strategies can help us meet this moment, survive what is to come, and shape safer and more just futures.
Practicing New Worlds explores how principles of emergence, adaptation, iteration, resilience, transformation, interdependence, decentralization and fractalization can shape organizing toward a world without the violence of surveillance, police, prisons, jails, or cages of any kind, in which we collectively have everything we need to survive and thrive.
Drawing on decades of experience as an abolitionist organizer, policy advocate, and litigator in movements for racial, gender, economic, and environmental justice and the principles articulated by adrienne maree brown in Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds, Ritchie invites us to think beyond traditional legislative and policy change to create more possibilities for survival and resistance in the midst of the ongoing catastrophes of racial capitalismâand the cataclysms to come. Rooted in analysis of current abolitionist practices and interviews with on-the-ground organizers resisting state violence, building networks to support people in need of abortion care, and nurturing organizations and convergences that can grow transformative cities and movements, Practicing New Worlds takes readers on a journey of learning, unlearning, experimentation, and imagination to dream the worlds we long for into being.

In a style that bridges the divide between academia and activism, Street Rebellion develops a broader and more accurate understanding of how people struggle for liberation.
We are living in a time of uprisings that routinely involve physical confrontationâburning vehicles, barricades, vandalism, and scuffles between protesters and authorities. Yet the Left has struggled to incorporate rioting into theories of change, remaining stuck in recurring debates over violence and nonviolence. Civil resistance studies have popularized the term âstrategic nonviolence,â spreading the notion that violence is wholly counter-productive. Street Rebellion scrutinizes recent research and develops a broad and grounded portrait of the relationship between strategic nonviolence and rioting in the struggle for liberation.

ÂĄNo PasarĂĄn! is an anthology of antifascist writing that takes up the fight against white supremacy and the far-right from multiple angles. From the history of antifascism to today's movement to identify, deplatform, and confront the right, and the ways an insurgent fascism is growing within capitalist democracies, a myriad of voices come together to shape the new face of antifascism in a moment of social and political flux.

One of the most unique aspects of anarchism as a political philosophy is that it seeks to abolish the state. But what exactly is âthe stateâ? The State is like a vast operating system for ordering and controlling relations among human society, the economy, and the natural world, analogous to a digital operating system like Windows or MacOS. Like a state, an operating system âgovernsâ the programs and applications under it and networked with it, as well as, to some extent, the individuals who avail themselves of these tools and resources. No matter how different states seem on the surface they share core similarities, namely:
* The State is a relatively new thing in world history
* The State is European in origin and outlook
* States are âindividualsâ in the eyes of the law
* The State claims the right to determine who is a person
* The State is an instrument of violence and war
* The State is above the law
* The State is first and foremost an economic endeavor
Anyone concerned with entrenched power, income inequality, lack of digital privacy, climate change, the amateurish response to COVID-19, or military-style policing will find eye-opening insights into how states operate and build more power for themselvesâat our expense. The state wonât solve our most pressing problems, so why do we obey? Itâs time to think outside the state.

Joyful Militancy investigates how fear, self-righteousness, and moralism infiltrate and take root within liberation movements, what to do about them, and ultimately how tenderness and vulnerability can thrive alongside fierce militant commitment.
Why do radical movements and spaces sometimes feel laden with fear, anxiety, suspicion, self-righteousness, and competition? Montgomery and bergman call this phenomenon rigid radicalism: congealed and toxic ways of relating that have seeped into social movements, posing as the âcorrectâ way of being radical. In conversation with organizers and intellectuals from a wide variety of political currents, the authors explore how rigid radicalism smuggles itself into radical spaces, and how it is being undone
Interviewees include Silvia Federici, adrienne maree brown, Marina Sitrin, Gustavo Esteva, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, Walidah Imarisha, Margaret Killjoy, Glen Coulthard, Richard Day, and more.

Self-help, society-help, and planet-help to shape the futures we want. A resolutely materialist spirituality based equally on science and science fiction: a wild feminist and afro-futurist ride!
Inspired by Octavia Butler's explorations of our human relationship to change, Emergent Strategy is radical self-help, society-help, and planet-help designed to shape the futures we want to live. Change is constant. The world is in a continual state of flux. It is a stream of ever-mutating, emergent patterns. Rather than steel ourselves against such change, this book invites us to feel, map, assess, and learn from the swirling patterns around us in order to better understand and influence them as they happen. This is a resolutely materialist âspiritualityâ based equally on science and science fiction, a visionary incantation to transform that which ultimately transforms us.

On March 14, 2025, the Trump administration issued an executive order that called for the dismantling of seven federal agencies âto the maximum extent consistent with applicable law.â They ranged from the United States Agency for Global Media, which oversees Voice of America, to the Minority Business Development Agency.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services was also on the list. Congress created the IMLS in 1996 through the Museum and Library Services Act. The law merged the Institute of Museum Services, which was established in 1976, with the Library Programs Office of the Department of Education.
By combining these two departments, Congress sought to create an overarching agency that could more cohesively and strategically support American museums and libraries. The agencyâs mission, programs and funding have been reaffirmed through subsequent legislation, such as the Museum and Library Services Act of 2003.
âŚ
What does the Institute of Museum and Library Services do?
The agency provides financial support to a wide array of cultural and educational institutions, including art, science and history museums, zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens and historic sites. Libraries of all types â public, academic, school and research â also benefit from the agencyâs funding.
Through grants, research and policy initiatives, the IMLS helps these institutions better serve their communities.
In the 2019 fiscal year, for example, the IMLS awarded funds to libraries in Nebraska to support economic development in 30 rural communities. The project created rotating âinnovation studiosâ in local libraries and provided residents with tools, instructional materials and programming to foster entrepreneurship and creativity. More recently, IMLS awarded a grant to the Hands On Childrenâs Museum to develop a toolkit that museums across the country can use to support families with relatives who are in prison.
For libraries, the IMLS might fund technology upgrades, such as virtual reality learning stations, AI-assisted research aids or digitization of rare books. The agency also pays for community programs that take place in libraries, from early childhood reading initiatives to workshops that help people land jobs.
âŚ
Without this support, many institutions will struggle to hire and retain qualified staff, leading to fewer exhibitions, stalled research and reduced educational outreach.
The consequences would be particularly severe for small museums and rural museums, which lack the fundraising capacity of larger urban institutions. Theyâre often the only sources of cultural and historical education in their regions, and their loss would create cultural voids that cannot easily be filled.
âIt is an honor to be appointed by President Trump to lead this important organization in its mission to advance, support, and empower Americaâs museums and libraries, which stand as cornerstones of learning and culture in our society. I am committed to steering this organization in lockstep with this Administration to enhance efficiency and foster innovation. We will revitalize IMLS and restore focus on patriotism, ensuring we preserve our countryâs core values, promote American exceptionalism and cultivate love of country in future generations,â said Acting Director Sonderling.
ahaha this is going to be so unbelievably bad i donât even know where to start. but posting this here because i really havenât seen many people outside of r/museumpros and (as of today) r/fednews talking about it. gutting the imls is bad enough but sonderlingâs statementâŚ.
#uspol#head in hands. i donât even know what to say#iâve had a horrible feeling since the 14th and itâs gotten worse

Is AI fr gonna steal our jobs?
Disclaimer: This post is mostly speculative and meant to encourage discussion and different perspectives on the topic.
Some time ago, I along with many others thought that AI was mostly going to aid in all the task centered, administrative, repetitive jobs. Cashiers, factory workers, call center workers, all the jobs that would benefit from automation were being taken over by AI.
When the ghibli trend came around, it was a guttural shock to many artists.
What used to generate questionable and bad looking art has now developed and is transitioning to generating high quality pieces, videos, music, animation and what not. In a matter of mere months. [AI tools example: midjourney, DALL-E, ChatGPT]

Art is not simply something pretty to look at. It is the accumulation of experiences, emotions and essense of humans. Art is their unique expression and the lens with which they see the world.
This blog is not an argument against the use of AI for art, but a call to understand what it really means.
Did most people see it coming when AI mimicked it with precision?
How long before it starts mimicking creativity, intuition, emotion and depth, all of what we thought was deeply and uniquely human?
"AI works by learning from lots of information, recognizing patterns, and using that knowledge to make decisions or do tasks like a human would." - Chatgpt.
Some time ago, the dominant argument was that AI might be able copy the strokes of a painting, the words of a novel. But it cannot hold the hands of another human and tell them all was well, it cannot feel and experience the real world like us, it cannot connect with humans and it cant innovate and envision new solutions.
If you still believe this, I urge you to go to chatgpt right now and open up to it like it was your friend. It will provide consolidation and advice tailored so well to your individual behaviours that it might feel better than talking to your bestfriend.
What is a deep neurological, experience based and emotional reaction to us is simply just analysis and application of data and patterns to AI. And the difference? Not easily distinguishable to the average human.
As long as the end result is not compromised, it doesnt matter to client and employers whether the process was human or not. Efficiency is often prioritized above substance. And now even substance is being mimicked.
Currently, the prominent discussion online is that in order to improve your job security, we need to master AI tools. Instead of fighting for stability(which is nothing but an illusion now) we need to ride the waves of the new age flooding towards us, and work with Ai instead of fighting against the change.
But the paradox is, the more we use AI the quicker it will learn from us, the quicker it will reduce the need for human guidance and supervision, and the quicker it will replace us.
Times are moving fast. We need everyone to be aware of the rate at which the world is changing and the things that are going on beneath the surface. If we simply take information at face value and avoid research, give it a few years or even months of time, and noone will know what hit us.
"Use of generative AI increased from 33% in 2023 to 71% in 2024. Use of AI by business function for the latest data varied from 36% in IT to 12% in manufacturing. Use of gen AI by business function for the latest data varied from 42% in marketing and sales to 5% in manufacturing."-Mckinsey, Mar 12, 2025.
By 2030, 14% of employees will have been forced to change their career because of- AI-McKinsey.
Since 2000, automation has resulted in 1.7 million manufacturing jobs being lost -BuiltIn
There is a radical change taking momentum right now. It's gonna be humans vs AI starting from the job aspect of the world.
Its not a matter of which jobs and skills are AI proof but which ones is AI likely to take over last.

What I predict personally, is that soon the world leaders are going to have to make a transformative choice.
This can either lead to a world where humans can be provided with money and resources instead of working to earn, as AI generates profit, and we can lay back and enjoy the things we love doing.
Or the other option is that we are going to have to live by scraps as small elite groups take over all the resources and tech.
Dystopia or utopia? The line is blurred.
Thankfully, for now, the choice is in human hands.
