[A video is uploaded to the blog, seemingly by Oran the Roto-Caster, as it seems to be filmed without Casi’s knowledge.]
Casi is sitting on the couch in her living room, wearing an outfit that seems totally unlike anything he would usually wear. Those who have met him in person and have grown accustomed to his wardrobe of bright colors with a bunch of purples and whites would find his current look of black and red to be utterly bizarre. Kept by his side is the worn down sword, seeming prepared to use it in some kind of defense. His demeanor is one of paranoia, despite trying to relax he’s constantly looking around at every noise and movement he seems to perceive.
Eventually two figures enter the room, Volnix and his Hisuian Zoroark, Zorrik. This seems to make Casi bristle in anger. “You,” he spits out in Hisuy-itak, helpfully captioned by the Roto-Caster, “You’re the man from the Icelands.” The accusation falls on quite literal deaf ears though as he makes no attempt to use sign or any other means of communicating with Nix in a way he actually understands.
Nix and Zorrik do however communicate with each other in sign before seemingly Zorrik responds. Due to the nature of Hisuian Zoroark illusions, whatever is being said is to Casi directly and isn’t caught on camera. The most we get is some growling and vocalizations from Zorrik. Seemingly it is requesting something of him.
“I don’t trust you. Either of you,” Casi harshly counters whatever was said. He finally switches back to Unovan to say, "Why do I have to be sent away when the two of you remain here?"
Another response that isn’t caught on the camera, the Zoroark seems to be growing frustrated. It makes another attempt to negotiate.
"I refuse." He's trying to maintain a level tone, but there’s a shakiness that underlines his words as he gets to his feet, sword in hand. Nix attempts to sign something along the lines of “I’m trying to help you, I promise,” but it seems to go ignored. "You're not removing me. I leave on my terms and not at the will of a Zoroark."
The Zoroark snarls, clearly agitated by the harsh tone and the refusal to comply. Casi lunges at Zorrik, prepared to slash at him.
From here, things escalate rather quickly. Nix’s shadow seemingly moves on its own, yanking him down with an unseen force. The sword clatters to the floor at his side.
With a cry he attempts to wrestle free of the shadow's grasp. The footage distorts as two ghostly figures begin to clash, wrestling for some kind of control over Casi’s body.
"Stay away from me!! Stop! Let me go!!" Casi begins to wail, kicking out and thrashing wildly. His shadow retaliates and seems to overpower his attacker before the connection breaks and Nix’s retreats.
After some sort of incorporeal struggle Nix collapses, face beginning to lose color before Zorrik steps in. He gives a snarl in warning before trying to remove himself and Nix from the situation. Casi attempts to launch at the two of them, roaring in anger, but ultimately collapsing to the floor, his body too exhausted. The footage cuts as Zorrik carries Nix out of the room, leaving Casimir coughing and violently shaking in his own living room.
{ can someone explain what’s going on?! }

A (shaky) Mikoto Double Color Analysis
Tl;dr 4koto
Throughout Double there are 5 prominently shown colors, not just red and blue (John and Mikoto) despite the mv being primarily John's POV and him only being aware of Mikoto's existence, he was literally just born I don't think we can expect him to know how systems work or that Mikoto isn't the only other alter.
The main 5 colors I noticed were red and blue of course, but also green, pink, orange. I counted orange as its own alter originally, but then realized orange is also often used to represent red/John. I can only make sense of this assuming different variations of the same color (for example, different shades of pink) represent the same alter. There's a few blues that appear, a few pinks, and a few greens, and a mix of orangey-reds.
Some of these are from inverts, of colors turning into pink or green, but some are very much so standalone the color appearing.
Tumblr media
Green and red background with blue and pink and (cut off) red text. So these are blue, pink and red's thoughts? With the background shifting from green to red, to indicate John fronting.
Tumblr media
Red, green
Tumblr media
Pink, red, green
I can't even screenshot it because I keep missing the frames but in this scene it also shows green silhouette which then inverts to a static overlay of a pink color, which then happens again at the door.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally caught the pink on the running scene.
The running scene is the most interesting to me as it shows the most.
In order, it's green flashes, then pink, then black with a blurry more monotone background, then quickly white with an orange background. Then it is blue and orange, monotone again, green and pink, orange and blue, THEN specifically orange, pink, green AND blue when it shows the silhouette of three of him running. It shows 4 Mikoto's running and shows 4 different colors.
Tumblr media
It does of course flash between other combinations of these colors but like, come on. Showing 4 Mikoto's running away on screen and showing 4 colors... At times the red and the orange look similarly, but this one is most definitely an orange. Especially since the frame after is blue and red, orange in the corner, and then no color Mikoto as the actual? I saw people take this scene as trikoto, but there are 4 Mikoto's shown, as well as a mix of 4 different colors.
Tumblr media
I really find it hard to believe they'd write a system character who became a system as an adult, when the writer has a psychology degree and it's very common knowledge DID stems from childhood.
Blacks and white's also often appear, but generally before drastic color changes. So would black and white indicate a 'switch'?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This scene then has blue, orange, pink, green, and a much lighter orange. Are both oranges representing the same alter? Idk lol, it looks more yellowy this time.
I wonder if whether a color is on Mikoto or in the background represents something?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This scene shows the three other alters, pink, blue, and green, but then a ring around them of orange, showing John is controlling the body ultimately at this point maybe?
Tumblr media
Red tint fading in and out during a murder
Tumblr media
Pink tint panning up which leads into....
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Straight up pink background! With a bit of purple? So purple grouped with pink, similarly to how red had been grouped with orange and the two shades of blue are probably supposed to indicate the same alter? I have no idea, it has been 12 hours since this thing even released. What gets me mostly is the blatantly pink backgrounds as well as the pink text, that are very clearly in contrast to the red backgrounds and text.
I keep editing this and adding more on lol, but my general view of this is that Mikoto lived covertly as a system throughout his life, but then when Orekoto/John was formed, it as a lot more overt and different from the previously existing alters who, though incredibly stressed out, were managing to live in 'peace', or at least together enough to hide/not realize that they had DID. It's possible Mikoto is the only alter who was not aware of the DID, as Orekoto is clearly directing comments at someone in their body who is AWARE of what he has done, and terrified of it. Yet Mikoto himself insists he has no idea, and is truly genuinely confused.

Unofficial Bluey Timeline: Part II
Welcome to another post of my Unofficial Bluey Timeline. This part will be focusing on "The Weekend" through "Hotels". I will also be highlighting the recently found 2017 pilot of the show, since it pretty much is plot-for-plot a remake of one of these episodes (P.S. if you haven't done so, always read the alt text).
**But first, an update regarding my last post. While making the videos for this week, I stumbled upon a program called HandBrake, an open-source video transcoder. This was because the episode backups I mentioned were MKV files and couldn't properly work on my editing app. There, I found that it could do way more than simply convert file types, but also change resolution, apply video filters, and much more; so I found myself experimenting with how to enhance my copies, especially for the season 1 episodes. To keep it short, the program made the episodes better presentable (no distracting interlacing!), and I'll likely use them for any future video uses.**
So, without further ado, lets get in.
The Weekend - Episode 6 (and the pilot)
Bluey scams Bandit into buying magical statues.
Debuts and Details:
The walking leaf (which as of last week's recent ep "Slide", is apparently named "Leaficus") makes its grand debut.
Being as this was built off the pilot of the same name, the animation moves similar despite changes in the characters' models. This is why the episode feels janky and off-model compared to the rest of the season, b/c it is.
In the pilot, Bingo sleeps on a separate room opposite to Bluey's. While this would switch to both sharing the room in the final show, that exact room wouldn't show up in another episode until "Bedrooms" 3 years later. It's there where we learn that both girls used to occupy the room as babies before moving into their current room, which somehow lines up with the pilot (Bingo, the youngest one, occupying the leftmost room).
It would take ages dissecting every single change here, so I made a quick comparison vid of some key moments.
(Pilot video came from original Streamable upload [Just learned it was taken down :(]; Final video came from Internet Archive, as I hadn't set up HandBrake to clean my copy atm)
Differences in Character pilot design: Bluey: minimal differences aside from different orientation of back spots (They're not Disney-shaped, as I call it) Bingo: Snout shape and size bigger; Dark orange top is now two round spots on each side; back has many spots instead of just one. Bandit: Only left side of head is dark (reminiscent of a spot); no tan belly. Has the more drastic design differences of all. Chilli: Her dark brown spot is often not present, or swapping around sides. In the final episode, her brown spot overlaps her snout, other than the other way around.
What a weird way to make an episode about the weekend. This episode doesn't really rely on plot, and just shows us a glimpse of the Heeler family, which is still neat. As for the placement of this episode on the timeline, by rule the final version of the episode is considered canon as opposed to the pilot. Despite both version's plots being very similar, and the separate room pointed out earlier, it doesn't seem fair that an older version of an episode would be in the timeline, as it doesn't fit with the rest of the series.
Favorite part: The walking leaf scene, I quote it everyday w/ an exaggerated accent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
BBQ - Episode 7
Bingo prepares a pepper capsicum salad.
Debuts and Details:
This serves as the introduction of Uncle Stripe (Bandit's brother), and his side of the family, featuring Aunt Trixie, and cousins Muffin and Socks.
There is a mention of a "Auntie Mary" and her salad dressing recipe, but she is never mentioned in another episode again.
This is the first of many episodes that have been altered in international releases. For this, every mention of 'capsicum' is replaced with 'pepper'; no significant cut of scenes occurs, as mouth flaps were the only aspect changed between versions.
Streamable link, cuz I just learned there's a one video limit
The intro scene with Bluey and Bandit prepping the grill serves as the first of a recurring element of the two copying each other, either through movement or verbal.
5 cans and a water bottle were destroyed during the episode.
Bingo learns how to turn on the hose
Chill episode, you get to feel the struggles of Bingo wanting to relax, while also tasked with creating the best pepper capsicum salad imaginable.
Favorite part: When Bingo is getting the salad dressing. The scream, in particular, gets me everytime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fruitbat - Episode 8
Bluey learns to dream in order to become a fruit bat.
Debuts and Details:
This marks the debut of Mackenzie, his dad, as well as Rocko
This is the first episode to span multiple days, going from night to next morning (2 days)
The stairway wall has no changes from its last appearance, however the fridge is reoriented to how it was in "Keepy Uppy"
Bluey is revealed to like fruit salad.
Fun episode. However, the main plot doesn't exactly start until 4 minutes in. Wish there was more to the dream than just flying and eating fruit, though; perhaps something more imaginative.
Favorite part: Bingo's iconic shot of her sleeping.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Horsey Ride - Episode 9
Bluey and the gang ride their dad's as horses.
Debuts and Details:
Polly Puppy, Bluey's special toy makes its debut
Bandit and Stripe play as Gallahop, and Sparkles, and they are technically married at the end.
There's what seems to be a porch in the backyard, that I swear never shows up ever again (unless it does, in which I've haven't seen it)
Universal Rule #1 of imaginary play - Animals can't talk; there is a clear violation by both horses during the wedding scene
Fun episode, nothing to say other than flirty Bandit is my favorite screencap.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hotel - Episode 10
Bandit books a room at the Heeler Hotel.
Debuts and Details:
Bingo is Slobber-Dobber, I guess? Aside from that, there's really nothing else to bring up
The episode, while being fun, doesn't really have much to talk about, timeline wise and in general. It's not bad per se, but it's very minimalistic.
Favorite part: Bluey smacking Bingo's head on the bed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With that, part II is complete. While there were some interesting details with this batch of eps, they haven't caused too much of a dent in terms of the timeline. Surely, next week, we get some nifty details for our timeline. As always, leave any comments about details I may have missed, and I'll see you next week.

The Comedy Of Errors (BBC 1983).
Tumblr media
I recently watched the 1983 BBC film version of William Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors and it certainly was an interesting watch. As with many film adaptations there were slight differences with staging and costume. Furthermore casting and setting sometimes differ between adaptations, especially those set in modern day, although this is not the case for this adaptation which seems to have costumes which do not try to modernise the play. Overall this film version of The Comedy of Errors was a captivating watch, and for me it highlighted the importance of plays which in my opinion need to be seen in performance to be properly appreciated. It is important to note when watching a filmed version of a play or even a theatre version that some directors alter certain aspects of a play such as staging and costume, and may not stay true to the original. Although I would argue that this adaptation stays very close to the original text.
One aspect of filmed productions of plays which differentiates them from live/onstage performances is their staging, as this has to be changed for film and tv. This can definitely be seen within the BBC version of The Comedy of Errors (1983). Film staging differs from modern theatre staging as well as Shakespearean staging which the play would have originally performed in. When performing for tv or film, stage setting is crucial as modern audiences expect a huge set with intricate details. Film sets are much larger in size and can be complex, unlike theatre sets which need to be light in order to be moved on or off the stage, which therefore limits theatre staging. When Shakespeare’s plays were first performed in the 15th century staging was drastically different to how it is today. The stage was simple with a roof or ‘balcony’ above supported by two pillars, a few props would have been added to the stage but other than that the stage was barren. A Shakespearean audience would have to suspend their disbelief and pretend, scene changes which were usually indicated by the actor’s speech. Furthermore there was no lighting at all so Shakespeare’s plays had to be performed by daylight or candlelight.
Tumblr media
Within the BBC The Comedy of Errors (1983) the staging was different to an on-stage production. The set is vast and has 3D props and even buildings which all look magnificent. Additionally multiple settings are shown throughout the film such as the docks, Antipholus of Ephesus' house and the market, which look to be fully fleshed out and realistic. The sets can be walked through and interacted with and aesthetically the film looked fantastic. The details of the set were beautiful and certainly for me created an exotic background which reflects how Antipholus and Dromio of Syracuse would have felt when first entering Ephesus.
Another way in which filmed versions of a play differ to live performance is within casting, which I would say is definitely distinctive within plays such as The Comedy of Errors. Shakespeare's error play is reliant upon the two sets of twins, the Dromio’s and Antipholus', being constantly confused for one another. Therefore casting is very important, the actors must look similar otherwise the audience will be confused until the agnorisis or moment of recognition at the end of the play. Within theatrical performance costume, wigs and makeup has been used to create the doubles, a technique which is also what Shakespeare's actors would have used. With filmed adaptations making characters look similar was very easy: casting one actor to play both the twins. For this production Michael Kitchen played the Antipholus twins and Roger Daltrey playing the Dromio twins. With "movie magic" the film is edited to have it look as if both twins are stood together in the end of the film. An element of casting that could not be done live, unless actual twins were cast.
Tumblr media
How does the play handle conflict and identity?
Overall the play itself is dependent on the themes of conflict and identity to push the plot forward, without these key ideas the play would not be an error play. The fifty errors which occur within the play cause characters to become more confused with their identities and have conflicts within themselves, as well as the other characters in the play, as a result. The Antipholus and Dromio twins are continually mistaken for one another, which for them causes an internal conflict in regards to their own identity. Loss of identity and self is discussed as early as Act 1 when Antipholus of Syracuse states that “In quest of them [his family], unhappy, I lose myself.” (Shakespeare 2018) this becomes true as Antipholus being confused for his brother causes him to lose his identity as himself.
An example of this is in Act 4 Scene 3 in which a Courtesan, or sex worker, mistakes Antipholus of Syracuse for Antipholus of Ephesus. The Courtesan is Antipholus of Ephesus' mistress and the confusion which occurs is surrounding Antipholus’s identity and the confusion about it. The Courtesan invited Antipholus and Dromio (of Syracuse) to dinner "Will you go with me?" (Shakespeare, 2018), however the Antipholus of Syracuse to has no understanding of his twin's relationship with this Courtesan. This confusion causes Antipholus of Syracuse to constantly insult the Courtesan referring to her as a "witch" "devil" and "Satan" (Shakespeare, 2018), which ultimately creates a conflict between them. To the Courtesan she knows Antipholus but from his perspective a stranger is talking to him as she knows him.
Tumblr media
The mistaken identity within this play causes conflicts. The Courtesan is owed a golden chain by Antipholus of Ephesus and by mistaking his twin for him more conflict arises. Other characters within the play begin to associate the Dromio and Antipholus twins with madness and insanity. Particularly the Courtesan who within Act 4 Scene 3 ends the scene with a soliloquy which states that "Antipholus is mad" (Shakespeare, 2018). She also comments on the unusual story that Antipholus of Ephesus told her at lunch, which for her displays his madness: "his own doors being shut against his entrance" (Shakespeare 2018). The confusion between these characters about their identity creates the confusion which drives Shakespeare’s comedy forward and the identity issues of the characters create humour for the audience who is always aware of the situation.
Madness, the state which the Courtesan believes Antipholus is currently in, is an integral part of this play and indeed many of Shakespeare's plays. The madness which is often caused by frustration and detachment of self causes a violent passion which can be seen within both the Dromio’s and Antipholus twins within this play. The conflicts are created by their loss of identity and at times they appear to be mad. The audience notices that the twins are different people but the characters have not yet had that moment of anagnorisis (or realisation) and the confusion causes the twins to go mad. The adamance of the community of Ephesus that they know the Dromio and Antipholus who arrive from Syracuse causes confusion and that loss of identity. Overall I would say the play handles conflict of identity very well, displaying both the humour and frustration it brings.

Undo my ESC ‘19 (semi-final two)
Good morning, folks, and welcome to part two of Undo my ESC, the feature where I look at the year’s songs and make a change – as small as altering a minor detail like a lyric or a small staging decision, or as big as going for a completely different national final song! Again, it’s just my opinion and is often delivered in jest. Generally speaking, there are fewer things that need drastic changing in this semi-final, but there are always exceptions...
Armenia: When I first heard this song, I was a bit non-plussed. Cut to a few days later, and there was a constant stream of “walking out, aooooo” in my head. I fear that it’s a song that takes a while to win people over – and that it doesn’t help matters that it’s difficult to completely understand what Srbuk is singing. I’d be tempted to shift the verses into Armenian.
Ireland: I was underwhelmed initially by this effort, but it ended up charming me with its low-key nostalgia. It seems like Björkman has done his level best to kill of Ireland’s chances, and RTÉ have done the rest with the garish, Liechtenstein comics meet 50s Americana staging. I’d change this to something a bit more low-key and elegant.
Moldova: As if to detox from 2 years of crazy staging and outlandish songs, Moldova have sent something incredibly dull and beige, which now they’re trying to cover up by using a decade-old Ukrainian gimmick. There were better songs in their national final, particularly “Sub pămint,” a rocky-folky effort with a lot more to hold my interest than “Stay.”
Switzerland: The Swiss were another country to abandon their national final – no real surprise after the years of mediocre entries it produced. I’d take Stones, Apollo and even Last of our kind over the cringeworthy, self-satisfied Justin Timberlake meets Despacito meets Fuego infernal blend that was “She got me.” I’m going to have a laugh with this one and have it so that Switzerland accept “Sister”, which would have been a passable Swiss entry, instead of rejecting it and having it end up in Germany where it screwed a perfectly good national final.
Latvia: Latvia, like its northern neighbour, Estonia, have gone from having one of the most promising and avant-garde national finals to one that has lost its shine, albeit not só much as Eesti Laul did. Credit where credit is due, they picked by far the best of a lacklustre bunch for me – a lovely, understated, saudadic effort. I wouldn’t change much about it at all.
Romania: Whilst it seemed that almost everybody and their mongoose wanted either the creepy poperatics of Laura “No to marriage equality” Bretan or fueclone #382 from Bella Santiago, by far the song that intrigued me the most was “On a Sunday.” I’m glad this delectable and dark tune won and couldn’t be happier for Ester, who was such a lovely person when we met. What I would change, if I could, would be the bizarre voting system that led to her victory – I’d have had her win by a clear margin in the public vote so as not to be the unfair recipient of hate for the way her song was elected winner. I’d also ensure the oddities on stage with her, pretending to play instruments, were relegated far out of view!
Denmark: Speaking of unpopular opinions, I also didn’t think much of “League of light”, a song so dull that the fact that it incorporated Greenlandic still didn’t quit its beigeness. I found the nicest song of the night to have been “Love is forever”, though I would replace the song’s English lyrics with Danish ones, teach Leonora how not to stare into the viewer’s soul and cause an existential crisis, and trim some of the tweeest excesses away such as the sashaying on the top of that massive chair.
Sweden: Another year, another edition of Melodifestivalen where the all-powerful juries have a real fear of anyone without the Y chromosone representing Sweden. “Too late for love”, at least, breaks the chain of self-satisfied boys singing empty pop songs. Instead, we have a barely soulful soul song sung by a more mature man. I would have gone for “Torn” or “Not with me” any day, though.
Austria: Austria’s labyrinthine internal selection came up with a little-known electro artist and I didn’t have the highest expectations, but I was intrigued. It ended up being an unexpected highlight, a true pearl of emotion and exquisite vocals. I don’t know what PÆNDA’s staging will be, but at the minute, I wouldn’t change anything except for her pronunciation of you as “Hugh/hue”!
Croatia: Oh, Croatia. Returning to a national final after Serbia and Montenegro did last year, and having enjoyed Beovizija and Montevizija respectively, I had hopes. Maybe not high hopes, but medium hopes. It was a collection of dated songs, bizarre songs, and then the eventual winner was both bizarre and dated: a screaming angel shrieking out a maudlin ballad that would have been dated even in the early 90s. I don’t have much of a horse in this race – I think my personal favourite was “Tebi pripadam”, which was harmless but pleasant, but I might go for the colourful “Brutalero” as the most likely to make an impact in Tel Aviv.
Malta: Malta bringing something interesting to ESC is one of the Four Horsemen of the Europocalypse, but before the other three come, I’m living for it. I worry how well a young balladeer with static performances will adapt to the sass and sizzle of Chameleon, but for the moment, I wouldn’t change anything other than remove the letters that overshadow the wild and colourful MV.
Lithuania: Lithuania’s NF is another for which life is too short to follow, especially since it takes the best part of 3 months to come up with – well, songs like this. One wonders how something can be both weird and dull, but this is, in turns. As pretty much the majority of folk rewriting this, I guess I would opt for “Light on” instead, though I’d be tempted by the quirky fun of “Mažulė.”
Russia: I can’t begrudge Sergej’s return to try to win after he found himself losing at the juries’ hand in 2016. I won’t even join those criticising him for not bringing another “banger” and instead returning with something a bit more solemn and musically complex. It’s not in my favourites but there’s not much I’d change, other than make the tune a little less repetitive.
Albania: Albania had another good Festival i Këngës – one of my favourite NFs in keeping an orchestra and maintaining national language throughout. My pick of all the songs to win was Ktheju tokës, and I wouldn’t change a thing about this powerful cri de cœur, except, perhaps, change it so that the second verse had different lyrics and was not just a repeat of the initial verse.
Norway: One of the absolute scandals of the season for me. In the red corner, we had one of the best composers to have represented Norway in the past 20 years with a sweeping, moving, classical tune, “En livredd mann”. In the blooo corner, we had a “what if Aqua moved to the woods, discovered they had animal spirits, thought they could joik and created this forgotten b-side in 1998?” Somehow, the latter won, but I feel the former really ought to have.
Netherlands: Though I cannot understand the fuss about this compared to other downtempo songs that I see being forgotten at best, slated at worst, it’s a decent track. I’d change the video so that it didn’t hinge so dramatically on gratuitous nudity, so that we could see who’s praising this for the music and who’s just in for a good looking lad’s bare arse.
Macedonia: It’s a nice, sincere effort from Macedonia – it feels a bit of a step back from me from the experimentation in the past two entries, but at the same time, I think it has a better chance of doing well than them. Not sure what I would change, other than the video. It’s very melodramatic and reminds me of an even more extra version of Bebe’s “Ella”; no small achievement given how extra that is.
Azerbaijan: I’m no great fan of AZ at this contest, but for the second time in 3 years (let’s try to forget the disaster that was “Delete my heart”), they’ve brought a decent song with some local character. My change would be to forget about the overproduced official music track and go instead for the delightfully understated unplugged performance, where Çingiz’ voice and the poignancy of the text come to the fore.
And the automatic qualifiers of this semi:
Germany: Because of my mischievious change for Switzerland, Germany would be free of the non-sisters perversely called Sisters and would have dodged the hole that they keep falling into – including unexperienced wild card artists in the national final that folk vote for out of sympathy, landing them in or near the bottom for several years, except last year, the one time they didn’t. There were plenty of good songs in the German national final, making the choice of S!!$Ŧ4ZZZ! even more perverse. I really enjoyed “The day I loved you most”, but, despite a somewhat dodgy live, I’d have to give the nod instead to the atmospheric, brooding “Surprise.”
Italy: This song and its artist are utter perfection to me. I wouldn’t change a single second. Unfortunately, Eurovision’s rather arbitrary 3 minute rule means that I would have to excise several seconds from the original. Mahmood’s actual solution seems to have been getting rid of the repetition of “[sai già] come va, come va, come va”, which for me sounds odd and wrecks the flow. I’d instead probably remove the “non ho tempo per chiarire, perché solo ora so cosa sei” line. It’d still be a change I wouldn’t ideally make, but I feel it’d be a bit less abrupt.
UK: The UK came onto the scene this year with a massive fanfare about a new format where YOU DECIDE in song duels which version of a song was better. Except, as it transpired, You the Punter didn’t decide – a dubiously qualified trio of “““experts””” did instead. The whole element of intrigue of the new format – finding out which version of a song is best – was taken away from the viewer and in doing so, all they got to decide between was 3 songs, 1 version of each. In the process, they eliminated the best version of “Bigger than us” – opting for the bombastic, X factor winner version by Michael Rice instead of the low-key but likeable country version by Holly Tandy. I’d have picked that instead. I’d have also not gone for that stupid format and instead tried to find at least 6 decent songs instead of 2 versions of 3 mediocre ones.
BONUS ROUND!
Ukraine: When I was doing SF1, I forgot that another country should have entered that semi who were under my imaginary purview. I’m talking Ukraine, of course, whose broadcasters instigated the scandal of the year by humiliating its artists with political questions on live TV, and then basically forced the winner to nót represent Ukraine by giving her a scandalous contact that didn’t offer any help with the financial burden of going to Israel and putting on a show, would shackle her to patently unreasonable terms, forbade her from speaking out of turn or improvising on stage, and threatened her with massive fines for the slightest unauthorised change.  Part of me really wants to say that I’d deal with the mess by ensuring that Tayanna (who should have won in 2018 with Lelja) wouldn’t withdraw, thus leading to the inclusion of Maruv at the last minute who ended up winning. But no – a bigger wrong must be righted and, even though her bizarre burlesque is not to my taste, I would have undone poor Maruv’s poor treatment and let her go to ESC with “Siren song” like the majority of voters wanted.

I. ANESTHETIC IDEOLOGY
Because in certain pockets of the world we’ve become divorced from the idea that achievement is heavily impacted by factors outside our control, the modern secular analogy to religion is the industry that’s been created from Maslow’s idea of self-actualization as a supreme expression of human life. The anesthetization of inner turmoil has been married to outward success–not only will you feel better, but your performance will also be optimized. You have the power to live a rational life in service of others.
Much of it seems like a rehashing of the 60s’ human potential movement as a counter-cultural rebellion against mainstream psychology and organized religion. It’s not so much a religion as much as it is a psychological philosophy and framework that focuses on a particular set of values, but it’s meant to be followed obsessively and provide meaning in the same vein.
Some basic tenets: you should take responsibility for everything that happens to you. Deal with whatever crisis comes up and move on from it as cleanly as possible. You aren’t like those postmodern softies who need to obsessively control their outer environment and suppress free speech. Everything is based on merit. You square fully with the harshness of the world and you are going to triumph by making a lot of money (while working on something appropriately meaningful that addresses the human condition).
There are remarkable similarities between the principles currently in vogue and things taught by human potential-focused movements like est, Landmark Forum, neuro-linguistic programming, Tony Robbins seminars, Impact Training, Lifespring, Complete Centering, Scientology, etc. A lot of the parallels revolve around personal responsibility as freedom:
Jordan Peterson: “Every experience that you have had contains information. If you have fully processed the information in that experience, (1) its recollection will no longer produce negative emotion and (2) you have learned everything you need to know from it.”
Landmark: there’s a concept in the Landmark Forum called getting complete. To get complete means that you need to address what is “incomplete” with the other person, which is a fancy way of saying getting emotional closure. To complete, you take responsibility for what is incomplete and relinquish reside emotions, resentment, etc. and extending forgiveness the other person. If you do that, you are completely being responsible for your own life.
Scientology: to become clear is one of the major states practitioners strive to reach on their way up the Bridge to Total Freedom. The state of Clear is reached when a person becomes free of unwanted emotions or painful traumas not readily available to the conscious mind. By applying Dianetics, every single person can reach the state of Clear.
Stoicism: “When you are offended at any man’s fault, immediately turn to yourself and reflect in what matter you yourself have erred.”
Since we can no longer trust in a higher power to guide our lives and imbue it with meaning, we’ve turned to believing that the only way to control the external world is through mastery of the internal world. There’s a lashing out against the postmodernist renunciation of structure and meaning, a rampant nostalgia for the idea of meritocracy, excellence, pulling yourself up by your bootstraps. The anecdote to emotional pain is inner calm and material success. It’s discipline, it’s not worrying about the things you have no control over, it’s letting go of the things that move you if they’re destructive to your life.
Believing that you are in control of all of your reactions and that controlling your reactions can radically affect the outer world is a good psychological trick on several levels: 1. It removes anguish over the “other” because everything is about you and your actions 2. It legitimately can catalyze action in people who might otherwise be paralyzed by a lack of meaning 3. It puts a focus on performance and hierarchy as a way to easily gauge success.
People are looking for an alternative to the confusion of being alive and not knowing why and what to do about it. Successfully selling a life philosophy gives you just about more influence and capital than anything else. But successful adoption of a life philosophy has little bearing on whether it’s true or not. From Simone de Beauvoir:
The serious man gets rid of his freedom by claiming to subordinate it to values which would be unconditioned. He imagines that the accession to these values likewise permanently confers value upon himself. Shielded with “rights,” he fulfills himself as a being who is escaping from the stress of existence. . . . [The serious man] chooses to live in an infantile world, but to the child the values are really given.  The serious man must mask the movement by which he gives them to himself, like the mythomaniac who while reading a love-letter pretends to forget that she has sent it to herself.
We’re trying to be serious men. So much remains thematically the same between different belief systems: the hope of eternal life, a belief in (AGI-assisted) miracles, a sense of purpose and value. The problem is often not in the particularities what we believe, but how blindly we believe it: when we start thinking about a framework not as guidance for how to look for answers but rather what to answer, it devolves to ideology.  Even ideologies that claim to promote curiosity and an environment for learning can end up enabling what James Carse calls “willful ignorance”: an intentional avoidance of knowledge and ways of thinking that contradict your religion. Believers like authority. Even people on the margins of modern political thought are drawn to ideological purity.
The problem with every ideology is that it’s ultimately reductionist: it reduces the world to one thing, and then explains the world in terms of just that one thing. It’s extremely useful because the world becomes simplified and you have something to tie yourself to emotionally, in this case internal and external performance. From the inside, a closed and consistent framework of truth looks more or less like joy.
II. HYPEROBJECTS
In Timothy Morton’s Hyperobjects, he introduces the concept of objects that are so massively distributed in time and space as to transcend spatiotemporal specificity. The examples he gives are as global warming, styrofoam, and radioactive plutonium. I think the concept can also apply to technology that is disruptive on such a large scale as to fundamentally alter our experience of living.
Growing up, my political beliefs were more or less shaped by neoliberalism and third wave feminism.  In recent years those frameworks seemed in many ways inadequate to diagnose and deal with what is happening around us: human beings have more or less become neurolivestock for corporations like Google, Facebook, etc--your personal information is taken from you, and you are rewarded with short-term conveniences like targeted ads but your long-term prospects are gradually reduced because you have less privacy, less freedom. We live in an operating system set up by “the accelerating triad of war, capitalism and emergent AI,” distracted by “libidinal- and reality-engineering, advertising, branding, media, the happiness industry.”
In the 1970 Albert Toffler wrote Future Shock. He defines the term as the social paralysis induced by rapid technological change. According to Charles Stross, his “working hypothesis to explain the 21st century is that the Tofflers underestimated how pervasive future shock would be. I think somewhere in the range from 15-30% of our fellow hairless primates are currently in the grip of future shock, to some degree. Symptoms include despair, anxiety, depression, disorientation, paranoia, and a desperate search for certainty in lives that are experiencing unpleasant and uninvited change. It's no surprise that anyone who can offer dogmatic absolute answers is popular, or that the paranoid style is again ascendant in American politics, or that religious certainty is more attractive to many than the nuanced complexities of scientific debate.”
I’ve been thinking lately about accelerationism, which is influenced by Deleuze and Guattari’s Anti-Oedipus and Lyotard’s Libidinal Economy, and in its modern incarnation came from texts that Nick Land began producing in the 1980s when he was involved with Cybernetic Culture Research Unit. The CCRU argued that the institutions like government, academia and the established sciences more or less slow progress down, and to break out we need to encourage “an accelerated culture” where new ideas could flourish. In a lot of ways, the accelerationism of that period (before Land had an amphetamine-induced breakdown and started spouting alt-right ideas) connects with a belief in Silicon Valley that markets need to be fast-moving and tech must be disruptive. Accelerationism “goes against conservatism, traditional socialism, social democracy, environmentalism, protectionism, populism, nationalism, localism and all the other ideologies that have sought to moderate or reverse the already hugely disruptive, seemingly runaway pace of change in the modern world.” I don’t necessarily espouse accelerationism as desirable, but it seems in many ways a prescient diagnosis of where we’re heading.
We are moving towards a post-industrial society: even skilled workers will lose value with the advent of robots that are sophisticated enough to provide medical procedures, sophisticated enough to program. There are technologies that are coming that will drastically alter what it means to be human: gene editing, brain computer interfaces, AGI. I don’t think anyone disputes that, but we’re all collectively unprepared to deal with it politically and philosophically. We are moving towards a world dominated by high-tech capitalism,  post-liberal humanism. For better or worse, it is moving towards us.
We need cliches to help us to adjust to a world transformed by future shock. I think individualism--being tough, being rational, pulling yourself up by your bootstraps--seems to people like a way to regain control over the present moment, which is defined by radical change and a loss of control over information. But to me it kind of feels like saying that being a good surfer is going to help you in a tsunami. A sense of agency might be pleasant in an individual life, but we live among networks that require a large number of people who participate in them to generate value but have the effect of centralizing wealth and power. We live on a dying planet, in a society that’s been transformed--and will be transformed--by hyperobjects that are difficult to predict and difficult to control.
Being on the cusp of a seminal moment is exciting in a lot of ways. Questions that seem interesting to me:
1. How do you expect a society to orient itself politically and philosophically when there is not anymore a stable baseline for what to expect in our lifetimes economically, technologically and otherwise?
2. It’s good and comforting to believe that we function autonomously and take responsibility for ourselves, but how do we reconcile that with knowing (I’m cribbing Foucault) that the individual is the product of power and that language, in the form that we interface with it in the media, is not made to believe but to be obeyed? I.e. as Chomsky says, “mass media amuses, entertains, and informs, and inculcates individuals with the values, beliefs, and codes of behavior that will integrate them into the institutional structures of the larger society.” Is it possible to avoid conflating the comfort of feeling like rational actors with actually pursuing independent thought? Which leads naturally into
3. Is there any way to bridge that gap between what we know to be true and our relative inability to generalize it? As Jared Leoner describes, the hacker attitude is often approximately this: “Open up your life to the ’net, all you ordinary people. The world is about to become transparent and that transparency will be the beginning of a golden age. Sharing is good. However, encrypt your life like crazy. Use VPN, etc. Only the smartest people can make no sound in the digital forest.” What are the most effective ways to go from “I believe something to be true (i.e. privacy matters) and will live my life in accordance with it” to “I will also convince other people that this belief is true?” If you believe, which I somewhat do, that people are motivated mostly what what they find emotionally appealing and choose values using that as the primary criterion, the answer might very literally be to design and sell an ideology whose tenets consist of the things that you believe to be true. Which is, of course, a separate thing from successfully convincing people that they should care about what is actually true, separate from ideology.
III.
“The individual is no longer rooted in society as a tree in a forest, rather he is comparable to the passenger in a rapidly moving vehicle whose name may be Titanic, but also Leviathan. As long as the weather holds and the outlook is pleasant, he will scarcely notice the curtailment of his freedom. He may even be filled with optimism and with the consciousness of power produced by the sense of speed. But all this changes when the fiery volcanic islands and icebergs emerge on the horizon. Then not only will technology claim a right to dominate fields other than the procurement of comfort, but at the same time the lack of freedom will become apparent–be it in the victory of elemental forces or in the fact that individuals who have remained strong acquire the means to exercise absolute power.”

The best way to Detect and Enhance Underperforming Content material: A Information to Optimization
New Post has been published on https://tiptopreview.com/how-to-detect-and-improve-underperforming-content-a-guide-to-optimization/
The best way to Detect and Enhance Underperforming Content material: A Information to Optimization
Tumblr media
Content material, content material, and extra content material! That’s what search engine optimisation is all about these days, proper? In comparison with once I began working in search engine optimisation (2014), at the moment, content material is constantly one of the vital fashionable subjects lined at digital marketing conferences, there are far more instruments that concentrate on content material evaluation and optimization, and total it appears to dominate most of search engine optimisation information.
Don’t imagine me? Right here’s a pleasant Google Developments graph which will change your thoughts:
Tumblr media
Google Developments screenshot for “content marketing” as a subject, set for worldwide curiosity.
However why is it that content material is now dominating the search engine optimisation scene? How important is content material in your search engine optimisation technique, truly? And most significantly: how will you be content material together with your website’s content material? Puns apart, this put up goals that will help you work out potential causes of your underperforming content material and the right way to enhance it.
Why content material is vital in search engine optimisation in 2020
Content material is likely one of the most vital components in search engine optimisation. Simply by paying shut consideration to what Google has been speaking to site owners in the previous few years, it’s clear that they’ve put a powerful emphasis on “content” as a decisive rating issue.
As an illustration, let’s take a look at this post, from August 2019, which talks about Google’s common updates and what site owners ought to concentrate on:
“Focus on content: pages that drop after a core update don’t have anything wrong to fix. We suggest focusing on ensuring you’re offering the best content you can. That’s what our algorithms seek to reward.”
The article goes on, itemizing a sequence of questions which will assist site owners when self-assessing their very own content material (I strongly advocate studying your entire put up).
That stated, content material alone can not and shouldn’t be sufficient for an internet site to rank properly, however it’s a fairly nice place to begin!
Underperforming content material: concept first
What’s underperforming content material?
Once I say “underperforming content”, I’m referring to content material, both on transactional/business pages or editorial ones, that doesn’t carry out as much as its potential. This may very well be content material that both used to draw a great degree of natural site visitors and now doesn’t, or content material that by no means did generate any natural site visitors regardless of the efforts you may need put in.
Over 90% of content gets no traffic from Google. Ninety bloody %! Which means that 9 pages out of 10 are seemingly to not obtain any natural site visitors in any respect — meals for thought.
What are the causes of underperforming content material?
There may very well be many the reason why your content material shouldn’t be doing properly, however the brutal reality is commonly easy: usually, your content material is just not ok and doesn’t deserve to rank within the prime natural positions.
Having stated that, listed here are the commonest the reason why your content material could also be underperforming: they’re in no explicit order and I’ll spotlight crucial, for my part.
Your content material doesn’t match the person intent
Based mostly on my expertise, this can be a essential factor that even skilled entrepreneurs nonetheless get fallacious. It could be the case that your content material is nice and related to your customers, however doesn’t match the intent that Google is showcasing within the SERP for the key phrases of focus.
As SEOs, our purpose ought to be to match person intent, which suggests we first want to grasp the what and the who earlier than defining the how. Whose intent we’re concentrating on and what’s represented within the SERP will outline the technique we use to get there.
Instance: site owners who hope to rank for a “navigational or informational” key phrase with a transactional, web page or vice versa.
Your content material isn’t within the preferrred format Google is prioritizing
Google could also be favoring a sure kind of format which your content material doesn’t conform to, therefore it isn’t receiving the anticipated visibility.
Instance: you hope to rank with a text-heavy weblog put up for a “how to” key phrase the place Google is prioritizing video content material.
Your content material is method too “thin” in contrast to what’s rating
It doesn’t essentially should be a matter of content material size (there is no such thing as a confirmed content material size components on the market, belief me) however extra relevance and comprehensiveness. It could be the case that your content material is just not as compelling as different websites on the market, therefore Google prioritizing these over you.
Instance: you hope to rank for closely aggressive informational key phrases with a 200-words weblog put up.
Your content material isn’t as up-to-date
In case your content material could be very topical, and such a subject closely is determined by info which can change with time, then Google will reward websites that put effort into retaining the content material recent and up-to-date. Other than search engines themselves, customers actually care about recent content material — nobody desires to learn an “SEO guide to improve underperforming content” that was created in 2015!
Instance: sure topics/verticals are typically extra liable to this challenge, however usually something associated to rules/legal guidelines/tips which have a tendency to vary typically.
Your content material is closely seasonal or tied to a previous occasion/expertise
Self-explanatory: in case your content material is about one thing that occurred prior to now, usually the curiosity for that specific topic will regularly lower over time. There are exceptions, in fact (god save the 90s and my fav Netflix present “The Last Dance”), however you get the gist.
Instance: subjects similar to dated occasions or experiences (Olympics 2016, previous editions of Black Friday, and so forth) or newsworthy content material (2016 US election, Kanye operating for president — no wait that’s nonetheless taking place…).
Your tech directives have modified the web page’s indexation standing
If one thing occurs to your web page that makes it fall out of Google’s index. The most typical points may very well be: surprising no-index tag, canonical tag, incorrect hreflang tags, web page standing adjustments, web page eliminated with Google Search Console’s take away software, and so forth.
Instance: after some search engine optimisation suggestions, your devs mistakenly put a no-index tag in your web page with out you realizing.
Your web page is sufferer of duplication or cannibalization
Should you occur to cowl the identical or related key phrase matter with a number of pages, this will likely set off duplication and/or cannibalization, which in the end will lead to a lack of natural visibility.
Instance: you launch a brand new service web page alongside your present choices, however the on-page focus (metadata, content material, linking construction) isn’t totally different or distinctive sufficient and it finally ends up cannibalizing your current visibility.
Your web page has been topic to JavaScript adjustments that make the content material onerous to index for Google
Let’s not go right into a JavaScript (JS) rabbit gap and hold it easy: if some JS stuff is occurring in your web page and it’s dynamically altering some on-page search engine optimisation components, this will likely influence how Google indexes your content material.
Instance: fictitious case the place your website goes via a redesign, heavy JS is now taking place in your browser and altering a key a part of your content material that now Google can not render simply — that may be a downside!
Your web page has misplaced visibility following drastic SERP adjustments
The SERP has modified extensively in the previous few years, which suggests many extra new options that at the moment are current weren’t there earlier than. This will trigger disruption to earlier rankings (therefore to your earlier CTR), or make your pages fall out of Google’s treasured web page one.
Additionally, don’t neglect to contemplate that the competitors may need gotten stronger with time, in order that may very well be another excuse why you lose important visibility.
Instance: some verticals have been impacted greater than others (jobs, flights, and resorts, as an illustration) the place Google’s personal snippets and instruments at the moment are getting the highest of the SERP. If you’re as obsessive about SERP possibilities, and particularly PAA, as I’m and need extra particulars, have a read here.
Your content material doesn’t have any backlinks
With out going into an excessive amount of element on this level — it may very well be a separate weblog put up — for very aggressive business phrases, not having any/too few backlinks (and what backlinks characterize in your website in Google’s eyes) can maintain you again, even when your web page content material is compelling by itself. That is notably true for brand new web sites working in a aggressive setting.
Instance: for a difficult vertical like vogue, as an illustration, this can be very tough to rank for key head phrases with out a good quantity of high quality (and naturally gained) backlinks to assist your transactional pages.
The best way to discover the problems affecting your content material
We’ve lined the why above, let’s now deal with the how: the right way to decide what challenge impacts your web page/content material. This half is particularly devoted to a not-too savvy search engine optimisation viewers (skip this half and go straight to subsequent if you’re after the how-to suggestions).
I’ll undergo an inventory of checks that may assist you to detect the problems listed above.
Technical checks
Google Search Console
Use the URL inspection software to investigate the standing of the web page: it will probably assist you to reply questions similar to:
Has my web page been crawled? Are we even permitting Google to crawl the web page?
Has my web page been listed? Are we even permitting Google to index the web page?
By assessing the Protection function, Google will share details about the crawlability and indexability of the web page.
Tumblr media
Pay explicit consideration to the Indexing part, the place they point out user-declared canonical vs google-selected canonical. If the 2 differ, it’s undoubtedly price investigating the rationale, as this implies Google isn’t respecting the canonical directives positioned on the web page — check official resources to study extra about this.
Chrome extensions
I really like Chrome extensions and I objectively have method too many on my browser…
Some Chrome extensions may give you a lot of information on the indexability standing of the web page with a easy click on, checking issues like canonical tags and meta robots tags.
Tumblr media
My favourite extensions for this matter are:
JavaScript test
I’ll hold it easy: JavaScript is vital in at the moment’s setting because it provides interactivity to a web page. By doing so, it might alter some key HTML components which can be essential for search engine optimisation. You possibly can simply test how a web page would look with out JS by utilizing this handy software by Onley: WWJD.
Realistically talking, you want solely one of many following instruments with a purpose to test whether or not JavaScript may be an issue in your on-page search engine optimisation:
All of the above instruments are very helpful for any kind of troubleshooting as they’re showcasing the rendered-DOM sources in real-time (totally different from what the “view-source” of a web page appears like).
When you’ve run the take a look at, click on to see the rendered HTML and attempt to do the next checks:
Is the core a part of my content material seen?

Intent and SERP evaluation
By analyzing the SERP for key phrases of focus, you’ll have the ability to determine a sequence of questions that relate to your content material in relation to intent, competitors, and relevance. All main search engine optimisation instruments these days offer you tons of nice details about what the SERP appears like for no matter key phrase you’re analyzing.
For the sake of our instance, let’s use Ahrefs and the pattern key phrase beneath is “evergreen content”:
Tumblr media
Based mostly on this instance, these are some things I can discover:
This key phrase triggers lots of attention-grabbing SERP options (Featured Snippet, Prime Tales, Folks additionally ask)
The highest natural spots are owned by very established and authoritative sources (Ahrefs weblog, Hubspot, Wordstream and many others), which makes this key phrase fairly tough to compete for
Listed below are fast solutions on what varieties of checks I like to recommend:
Perceive and classify the key phrase of research, based mostly on the kind of outcomes Google is exhibiting within the SERP: any adverts exhibiting, or natural snippets? Are the competing pages primarily transactional or informational?
Test the standard of the websites which can be rating in web page one: indicative metrics that may assist you to collect insights on the standard of every area (DA/DR) are useful, the variety of key phrases these pages are seen for, the estimated site visitors per web page, and so forth.
Do a fast crawl of those pages to bulk test the comprehensiveness of their content material and metadata, or manually test some should you desire that method.
By doing most of those checks, you’ll have the ability to see in case your content material is underperforming for any of the explanations beforehand talked about:
Content material not compelling sufficient in contrast to what’s rating on web page one
Content material within the fallacious format in comparison with what Google is prioritizing
Content material is well timed or seasonal
Content material is being overshadowed by SERP options
Duplication and cannibalization points
Check out my 2019 post on this subject, which matches into much more element. The fast model of the put up is beneath.
Use compelling search engine optimisation instruments to grasp the next:
whether or not, for tracked key phrases of curiosity, two or extra rating URLs have been flip-flopping. That could be a clear signal that search engines are confused and can’t “easily decide” on what URL to rank for a sure key phrase.
whether or not, for tracked key phrases of curiosity, two or extra rating URLs are showing on the identical time (not essentially on web page one of many SERP). That could be a clear sign of duplication/cannibalization.
test your search engine optimisation visibility by touchdown web page: if totally different URLs that rank for very related key phrase permutations, likelihood is there’s a threat there.
final however not least: do a easy website search for key phrases of curiosity with a purpose to get an preliminary concept of what number of pages (that cowl a sure matter) have been listed by Google. That is an insightful preliminary train and likewise helpful to validate your worries.

The best way to repair underperforming content material
We’ve lined the commonest circumstances of underperforming content material and the right way to detect such points — now let’s discuss methods to repair them.
Beneath is an inventory of prompt actions to take when bettering your underperforming content material, with some very beneficial hyperlinks to different sources (largely from Moz or Google) that may assist you to develop on particular person ideas.
Ensure your web page could be crawled and listed “properly”
Be certain that your web page doesn’t fall beneath any path of blocked sources in Robots.txt
Guarantee your web page shouldn’t be supplied with a no-index meta robots tag or a canonical tag pointing elsewhere (a self-referencing canonical tag is one thing it’s possible you’ll need to think about however not obligatory in any respect).
Test whether or not different pages have a canonical tag pointing to your URL of focus. Irrelevant or poorly-done canonical tags are inclined to get ignored by Google — you may test if that’s the case within the URL Inspection tool.
Guarantee your website (not simply your web page) is free from any non-SEO friendly JavaScript that may alter key on-page components (similar to headers, physique content material, inside hyperlinks, and many others.).
Guarantee your web page is linked internally on the positioning and current in your XML sitemap.
Perceive search intent
Search intent is a fascinating topic in and of itself, and there are lots of nice sources on the topic if you wish to delve deeper into it.
Put merely, it’s best to all the time analysis what the SERP appears like for the subject of curiosity: by analyzing the SERP and all its options (natural and non), you may get a a lot better understanding of what search engines are on the lookout for with a purpose to match intent.
By auditing the SERP, it’s best to have the ability to reply the next questions:
What kind of content material is Google favoring right here: transactional, navigational, informational?
How aggressive are the key phrases of focus and the way authoritative are these rivals rating extremely for them?
What content material format is Google showcasing within the SERP?
How complete ought to my content material be to get an opportunity to rank in web page one?
What key phrases are used within the competitor’s metadata?
What natural options ought to I think about addressing with my content material (issues like featured snippets, folks additionally ask, prime photos, and many others.)?
Hopefully all of the questions above may even offer you a sensible view of your possibilities of rating on Google’s first web page. Don’t be afraid to modify your focus to PPC for some very aggressive key phrases the place your actual chance of natural rankings are slim.
Map your pages towards the correct key phrases
This can be a obligatory step to ensure you have a transparent understanding of not solely what key phrases you need to rank for, but additionally what key phrases you’re eligible to rank for.
Don’t overdo it and be sensible about your rating potentialities: mapping your web page towards a number of key phrases variations, all of which present very totally different SERPs and intents, shouldn’t be sensible.
My suggestion is to choose two or three major key phrase variations and concentrate on getting your content material as related as doable to these phrases.
Write nice metadata
Title tags are nonetheless an extremely vital on-page rating issue, so dedicate the correct time when writing distinctive and keyword-rich titles.
Meta descriptions aren’t a rating issue anymore, however they nonetheless play a component in attractive the person to click on on a search consequence. So from a CTR perspective, they nonetheless matter.
SEO keyword research is the plain alternative to put in writing compelling metadata, however don’t neglect about PPC ad copies — test what PPC advert copies work finest in your website and take learnings from them.
Don’t change metadata too typically, although: ensure you do your homework and provides sufficient time to correctly take a look at new metadata, as soon as carried out.
Make the correct content material amends
Based mostly on the intent audit and key phrase mapping insights, you’re now able to work in your precise web page content material.
By now, you’ve achieved your homework, so that you simply must concentrate on writing nice content material for the person (and never for Google).
Readability is an important a part of a web page. Tips that I’ve realized from colleagues through the years are the next:
Learn the content material out loud and attempt to objectively assess how attention-grabbing it’s in your audience.
Ensure to make use of sufficient spacing between strains and paragraphs. Folks’s consideration span as of late could be very quick, and likelihood is folks will skim via your content material quite than dedicating 100% of their consideration to it (I’m positive a few of YOU readers are doing it proper now!).
Ensure your tone of voice and language match your audience (should you can write issues in plain English vs. extremely technical jargon, accomplish that and don’t over-complicate your life).
Be sure to’ve considered all inside linking potentialities throughout the positioning. Not solely for a similar kind of web page (transactional web page to transactional web page, as an illustration) but additionally throughout differing types (transactional web page to video/weblog put up, if that helps folks decide, for instance).
Non-obligatory step: as soon as every part is prepared, request indexing of your web page in Google Search Console with the URL inspection software.
Last ideas
Underperforming content material is a quite common challenge and shouldn’t take you unexpectedly, particularly contemplating that content material is taken into account amongst (if not the) most vital rating components in 2020. With the correct instruments and course of in place, fixing this challenge is one thing everybody can study: search engine optimisation shouldn’t be black magic, the reply tends to be logical.
First, perceive the trigger(s) in your underperforming content material. When you’re sure you’re compliant with Google’s technical tips, transfer on to figuring out what intent you’re attempting to fulfill. Your analysis on intent ought to be complete: that is what’s going to determine what adjustments you’ll must make to your content material. At that time, you’ll be able to make the mandatory search engine optimisation and content material adjustments to finest match your findings.

Leading 5 Things You Must Remember For Cosplay
Hey there, I'm Pugoffka, often understood by my given name Elena.I have been doing cosplay fires for 5 years currently. In the working shop, we'll deal with these subjects: As a digital photographer of both cosplay and non-cosplay image shoots, I have actually seen my share of great as well as bad preparation.Through previous knowledge, I have actually tightened down a choice of key pointers that will make for an enjoyable as well as smooth photo shoot.
1. Know your personality inside out
Let's start with the image shoot prep work. The love as well as personal investment in the personality is noticeable in your cosplay as well as will certainly inspireyou to provide it your all.
I enjoy the personality "Evie Fry" from Assassin's Creed Organization: She fascinated me as well as I expanded to take care of her. If I really did not enjoy the personality then it would certainly have turned up as sloppier craftsmanship or lack of detail. Finding out about your personality will help you connect with the cosplay and, when at a Con, you will be able to relocate and also talk like them thus including an additional layer to the outfit. Just love that you are as well as what you do, essentially.
2. Talk, Talk as well as Talk
youtube
So, you have lastly scheduled yourself a photo shoot with a photographer, either through emails, telephone call, or texts. Below are a few points to make sure you as well as your photographer get on the exact same page.
Organizing
Keep in normal call with your photographer. Relying on when you arrange the image shoot, you may locate that you require to alter the day, the time, also the cosplay you planned on putting on. Ensure to maintain your professional photographer informed if something has come near offer you and the photographer time to reschedule.
Timing
I can not worry sufficient about time. What time of day are you preparing to fulfill? Did you pick 2 o'clock? Or was it 1 o'clock? Make certain you absolutely recognize what time you planned on satisfying the professional photographer. Relying on the day, that digital photographer might have multiple consultations as well as require to adhere to the timetable to the min. Being late to a photo shoot can place a thrill on both individuals depending on what you have planned.
3. Locate your character.
To select the location for the shoot. If you favor an outdoors shoot, you have to determine the time of day when you'll start and end up the shoot.
Tumblr media
The places for the photo fires do not always need to be nearby. Often times I've had to go to the countryside and also even to various other cities to find a perfect location, close to the original resource's design (canon). If you can't determine where to shoot your cosplay, try searching for some concepts on the net. There are numerous themed web-sites that could help you discover some deserted structures, historical places, gorgeous landscapes. See to it that your chosen location's design fits to your fandom's histories. Everything in the shot requires to look sensible. For example, let's have a look at my recent photographs of the now-popular fandom "Strike on Titan". We did the contend different locations. Our main job was to locate a wall. What you see on the picture is a messed up movie theater. We likewise wished to add something unique, so we went to a steed club and also shot the fifty percent of the shoot with steeds. When collaborating with an additional individuals, we went to an old healthcare facility. And after that finished the shoot in a forest with special impacts. Yet we'll get to this tail end later.
If you do not have any kind of comparable how to cosplay superhero locations in view, attempt to be innovative. You can make use of a normal old block wall surface. As well as, in my viewpoint, the older and also dirtier the wall surface is, the much better it will certainly look. Choose the style of your picture shoot, based on the area. Make a decision if it will be funny or unfortunate, if it is a romance. Possibly you desire it to have its very own plot-- in that instance you have to prepare a storyboard, to leave no location for holdbacks or thoughts on "what to shoot next". Though following a rigorous strategy isn't always such a good thing. Often times we took care of to produce a far more intriguing product by improvising as well as not adhering to our strategies.
Always think about these befoe you begin the shoot.
A refuge. Make sure you are in a secure area, not also remote, too harmful.
You would certainly better have a restroom.Having to go to the bathroom will probably occur at one of the most troublesome times, like in the center of a photo shoot. Be ready and already be close to a washroom. And also, it aids if there are multiple costume adjustments that require to happen.
4. Expert present and also makeup
Makeup
No cosplay is total without the correct cosmetics, hair piece, wig, prop, or accessory. Everything down to the eye shade of the personality can bring any cosplay to the next level.TO prevent to be not practical, I'll advise a site for you concerning exactly how to make up.
Position
For me the hardest is making pictures with great pose. You need to look not only for hands and head, like in picture, however, for the complete body, it's angle, placement of legs. Than check out the costume, and also just after that make an image.
5. Make it Perfect.
Don't neglect to photoshop your photography for better behavior. You can occasionally include good results with the shade or illumination of the image to make it more unique before sending them over to us, and that makes your work a great deal simpler when it comes to submitting them to the net.
If you're taking your very own pictures or have a digital photographer that will not be including any impacts (like a family members participant who is involuntarily dragged right into taking pictures for you), you can either include impacts or just leave the photos as they are. It can be a pricey program to purchase, however will be well worth your time if you're major concerning your cosplaying photography.
If you do not know how to use photoshop to modify your photos.you might ask a specialist photographer to aid you to modify it, or you may find some overview in the Internet to aid you to edit your images, or you can use some tools that is much easier for you to modify.
Of training course cosplay, cosplay photosets-- this is primarily a hobby that brings us fun.I love characters. Trust me, once you really obtain right into the trenches of cosplay as well as feel your hands developing imaginary personalities in the genuine globe, all the work and also hours on Youtube will be worth it. If you've ever wanted to live in a personality or walk for a mile in some imaginary footwear, cosplay is the means to.
I protest any guidelines as well as limits in the image. Yet there are things that are much better not to do due to the fact that experience has revealed more than once that it does not look great on the images if you do not think the experience of various other digital photographers you can do to try and also experiment. After all of this can get something drastically brand-new.
Bear in mind that not everything is mosting likely to be perfect for the first time. Occasionally you need to obtain made use of to the professional photographer. And also if you really feel unpleasant it will certainly be really obvious in the photo. Do not quit after the very first time. Try repeatedly. One way or another you'll shock your friends and yourself with lovely photos.

Child Please: Concerning the Pyszczyk Maneuver
“Human memory is like a scribe laboriously setting down letters while his left hand erases the text of the past. Every generation knocks together its own apocalypse and utopia and, confident in its own powers, believes its utopia and apocalypse will come off exceptionally well, unlike any other, will be final.” —Zbigniew Herbert, “Passo Romano.” The Collected Prose: 1948-1998 (pp. 651-652). HarperCollins. Kindle Edition.
The mind, like the human face, is a pebble on which the stream of time exerts tremendous powers of revision and change. I love creeks and the places that nourish them. Few occupations delight me more than stopping in some leafy cloister to consider the subtle arts by which time’s whimsy alters the rocks in a stream. In wheeling, whirling courses of silt and sediment, in teeming eddies and gurgling little pockets, the pebbles in the stream are constantly prodded and perused, tested and turned, worked on and prised and pushed by the patient fingers of the water. Heavy rocks and sunken logs and broken branches cluttering the stream are massaged by detritus and flowing sediment and whatever else the churning waters may choose to marshal as a persuasive tool. The stream’s hands exert their influence quietly beneath a calm surface glazed with floating leaves and spidery skimmers. The water might spend a hundred years smoothing a single stone. Or instantly the stream might give in to greed and gorge itself on a chunk of earth from an overhanging bank, or snap a mossy log and ferry it to some new position.
Eventually, the artistic collaboration between time and water rearranges the small stream-things and the large stream-things, and what emerges is a new pattern of movement, a slightly new direction for the whole stream. The water’s work changes the rocks, but the story does not stop there: the changed rocks change the stream in turn; alterations in the stony bed change the course of the stream itself. The new course changes the rocks in new ways, and so forth.
The human mind is altered by time, but time itself is baptized by contact with the imagination. The imagination amplifies how we experience the past: we can gratefully imagine how things could have turned out much worse than they did. Conversely, we can choose to torment ourselves with the power to imagine how much better life could have been. But the imagination can also make the future seem inhabitable. The person for whom the future holds no imaginable significance is likely to enjoy a less meaningful present.
As someone who wrestles with depression, I have real sympathy for anyone who considers the future likely to be desolate and uninhabitable. Nor am I surprised when bleak assumptions lead to bleak opinions and bleak paintings. But I must try to cast a critical eye on such assumptions when they arise in my own mind. And when bleak surveys of the future form the basis for drastic calls to action, I wonder exactly how did it happen, this shriveling of the imagination, this inability (in the words of poet Dana Gioia) to “dream of a future so fitting and so just / that our desire will bring it into being.”
What follows are some scattered thoughts on a recent opinion piece by Kristen Pyszczyk positing an ecological mandate to procreate less.
Pyszczyk takes as her starting point the announcement by Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines that they are expecting their fifth child. Pyszczyk notes an online backlash against this announcement, and says she was surprised:
Not because I disagree with their critics, who admonished the couple for having too many kids, but rather because it's a sentiment so seldom heard in a society that generally celebrates procreation with almost militant cheerfulness.
I am amazed by Pyszczyk’s apparent struggle to understand why people celebrate procreation so much. Complaining about some taboo against “criticizing parents for having too many kids” would be like Westboro Baptist Church members grousing about a taboo against protesting military funerals. Society has no need for taboos against notions that can only bubble up in the mind of someone predisposed to extreme zealotry. How pleasant it is to imagine that disagreements stem from the irrationality of others. If one’s position meets widespread unpopularity because of a “taboo”, an “almost militant” sentiment, or an “uncritical” contagion, then surely one is excused from the risky task of scrutinizing one’s own motives too closely.
While having a child or five is a very personal choice, it's also a choice that affects everyone who inhabits our planet. So while many people might find the backlash unwarranted, it's actually a conversation we need to have in order to challenge our uncritical acceptance of the life-fulfillment-through-procreation story.
Pyszczyk employs the term “conversation” three times in this piece, but she uses it as a euphemism for whatever is the opposite of conversation. She seems to have no interest in persuading anyone through dialogue. She advocates calling people out for having lots of kids and shaming them into having fewer kids (henceforth will I refer to this as the Pyszczk Maneuver). Oh, I don’t know; a conversation centering on being shamed and called out just does not appeal much to me.
Procreation is becoming a global public health concern, rather than a personal decision. So when people do irresponsible things like having five children, we absolutely need to be calling them out.
The only noteworthy ecological effect of “calling out” parents with lots of kids as “irresponsible” would be to befoul the atmosphere by exposing one’s own toxic asininity.
Someone who might be inclined to have children, yet who chooses not to in order to help the earth, has my admiration for incurring so real a cost by acting in a principled way. That person also has a measure of my sadness, because I imagine the path they choose to walk may be very lonely at times. I say all this as I walk my own lonely path in life.
Pyszczyk writes:
Population control is a fraught topic, and carries with it associations with eugenics and other nasty historical events. But we still need to talk about it, and people who reacted strongly to the Gaines' pregnancy announcement know this on some level. It's not an exaggeration to say that the survival of our species depends on it.
Population control is not merely associated with “nasty historical events” like eugenics; population control was the animating principle for the perpetrators of those atrocities. Indeed, the history of population control alarmism is a long train of abuse and hubristic overreach. Today’s theories remain tainted (inescapably, to my mind) by the heinous stank of odious and cruel social projects like eugenics and one-child policies, not to mention the spectacularly failed predictions of famine and devastation made by the likes of Thomas Malthus, Paul Ehrlich, and others.
By no means should past abuses and quackpot tendencies invalidate concerns about humanity’s impact on the natural world. Quite the contrary. Likewise, just because every so often some kook hauls himself out of a dank pit and decides to predict the date of Doomsday in the name of the Lord, his kookery has exactly zero bearing on the truth claims of Christianity.
I am troubled by the way Pyszczk glosses over eugenicist and racist aspects of population theory. She claims that “the survival of our species depends on” population control. If the situation is that dire, if [cue cinematic music] the fate of humanity is at stake, then what possible justification can there be for not forcing people to procreate less or physically winnowing the population? If a certain number of babies truly is too heavy a burden for the earth to bear, then would not the ruling authorities actually have a moral obligation to forcibly reduce the population? I do not see how a person’s choice matters if humanity truly hangs in the balance.
The Pyszczk Maneuver will never persuade anyone who is not already amenable to its logic. Its core problems are ethical and evidential, but the message of the Pyszczk Maneuver also faces an impossibly steep public relations battle. Hectoring an extremely well-liked celebrity couple for having a baby seems like a fine hill to die upon.
I see no way to argue for a reduction in people without inviting an array of half-sarcastic replies like “which people?” and “you first.” To argue in any respect for “fewer people” is to first plant in my imagination the seed of a person’s existence. That hypothetical person acquires real weight in my mind, and for me to then wipe that person out of existence would be participation in a hate crime against otherness.
“Now,” Pyszczk writes, “as a feminist, I tend to oppose any cultural conversation that involves telling a woman what to do with her body.” Pyszczk then constructs an elaborate rationale for why she feels comfortable telling other women to have fewer children. Such moral contradictions will arise in our wacky hyper-modern world, where people still want the narrative satisfaction of eschatological meaning traditionally provided by religion, but not the burden of having to be traditionally religious in respectable society. So one cobbles together one’s own sources of narrative meaning. When one’s personal vision of Utopia fails to materialize, the next step is to seek the consolations of Apocalypse. Some amount of pricking and poking seems inevitable when you inhabit an epistemological nest of your own making, cobbled together with any contradictory twigs and scraps you could gather. Pyszczk senses two sides of her values coming into conflict and cannot really reconcile them.
People crave justice. They see nature ravaged and tortured under rack and screw and forced to give unreliable testimony, and so where nature cannot speak the truth, people rightly cry out for justice on her behalf. I lament all plundering and exploitation of the earth and its creatures, and I question my preference for ways of living that insulate me from the claims of nature and leave me blind to the goodness and sheer fragility of natural life. I affirm the need to steward and protect ecological resources. But the Pyszczk Maneuver seems obviously counterproductive. I can scarcely imagine a more efficient way of alienating people against the environment than by shaming them for their desire for children, all on the basis of extremely flimsy speculation. And I do not see any way to argue for an ecological mandate to have fewer kids without shaming people who have or want to have lots of kids.
Concerns about ecological justice must be grounded in humility, given the overwhelming complexity of being. “All the efforts of the human mind cannot exhaust the essence of a single fly,” declared Thomas Aquinas over seven centuries ago. The more attention I pay to the small things in my midst, the more voluminous they become and the more they absorb me. The more I look at a thing, the more substantial thingness it seems to possess.
Think about the early days of microscopes. Can you imagine how wonderful it must have been for a man of learning to peer through a microscope for the first time and see the world with a whole new perspective? What a rush of blood to the brain; what intellectual vertigo it must have been. The seventeenth-century poet and mystic Thomas Traherne looked at a common housefly under the glass and what he found was a marvel beyond marvels:
The Creation of Insects affords us a Clear Mirror of Almighty Power, and Infinite Wisdom with a Prospect likewise of Transcendent Goodness. Had but one of those Curious and High Stomached flies, been Created, whose Burnisht, and Resplendent Bodies are like Orient Gold, or Polisht Steel; whose Wings Are So Strong, and Whose Head so Crowned with an Imperial Tuff, which we often see Enthroned upon a Leaf, having a pavement of living Emrauld beneath its feet, their contemplating all the World…the Infinit Workmanship about his Body the Marvellous Consistence of his Lims, the most neat and Exquisit Distinction of his Joynts, the Subtile and Imperceptible Ducture of his Nerves, and Endowments of his Tongue, and Ears, and Eyes, and Nostrils; the stupendious union of his Soul and Body, the Exact and Curious Symmetry of all his Parts, the feeling of his feet and the swiftness of his Wings, the Vivacity of his quick and active Power...
Life overpowers me with plenitude. Perhaps Pyszczk and I simply inhabit mental worlds too radically different to be bridged: while I stroll down to the neighbor’s barn behind my house, she aspires to the rings of Saturn. The small world of a backyard, a neighborhood, a sloping hill, a patch of woodland—to me these are places replete with possibility and mystery. Just yesterday my little world was transformed with snow, and the tree outside my window filled up with cardinals. I spent hours watching dozens of fat red males and dappled gray-brown females bustle and perch and fuss and feed.
I could not say for sure how moving a handful of pebbles from one spot to another might affect the course of a flowing stream; what, then, is there to say to those who would not blush at reducing human life to carbon footprints and doling out blithe judgments on which person’s future should or should not be blotted out? What algorithm or cost-benefit analysis or predictive model can possibly account for the ripples in time that may emanate from a single human life, let alone whole groups of people? What wretched slide into cultural glaciation must the people of Iceland undergo in order to systematically annihilate people with Down Syndrome through abortion? You may bend the direction of the stream to your will; you may change the way the water moves by rearranging the rocks and the sand and the dirt; but you cannot account for the way the stream will change you in return.

A very important part of redlining and sustaining compliance is to ensure that changes are tracked meticulously including the person who made them and the time of the change. In the past, tracking changes meant downloading a document, using Microsoft Word to edit it and then e-mailing the document back. In the unfortunate event of two people making changes simultaneously, document reconciliation had to be undertaken which was tiresome and could induce irreversible mistakes.
Keeping in mind the limitations of Redlining using Microsoft Word, DocuCollab has come up with an effective Contract Management Software. DocuCollab offers seamless contract review and negotiation with industry-first online real-time document redlining, review and collaboration platforms making sure that every document is indeed a “clean” copy.

Walk away if necessary!
It is not uncommon to come across deals that go cold after this entire process. It may seem nonsensical but it’s true in every negotiation. Failed negotiations may happen due to several unforeseen contingencies like unfavourable redlining, failure to reach a mutual agreement and uncompromising rigidness. Prior mental preparation is necessary as negotiations can still come to a halt and either party can disassociate. It might not at all be an ideal circumstance but terminating negotiations and walking away from a contract at the right time is an acquired skill. An unwanted deal will only cost an organization money, time and resources in the long run.
A contract management platform has many important features, such as Approval Workflow, Auto Extraction, Buy-Side (Suppliers), Completion Tracking, Compliance Management, Contact Management, Contract Drafting, Contract Templates, Digital Signature, Document Management, Full-Text Search, Lifecycle Management, Milestone Tracking Sell Side (Customers), and Speciality Contracts Version Control ensuring smooth and easy negotiations.

Video
Original version of this. I had to pitch it a lot in order to be available on YT, but I can’t just leave out how I intended it to be. Even though the player here killed the video quality...
Also, there’s a story behind it.
You probably heard that Chester Bennington from Linkin Park passed away last week...When I saw the news, I dropped everything else I was doing (temporarily) and proceeded to make this AMV. I have a special place in my heart for Linkin Park. I guess everybody knows about the so called "Linkin Park AMVs" featuring one of their songs and fight scenes from shounen anime (Naruto, Bleach, Dragonball, etc). My AMV career also started with this kind of videos...sort of. I didn't use mostly fighting scenes because I prefer using clips that fit with the lyrics. And I’m not the only one who does that. Still, I was pretty bad back then...And I was using windows Movie Maker cause that was the only option available 10 years ago. Yep, I've been editing AMVs for 10 years and this is my 3rd Youtube account. This song is incredible hard to work with. Even in my beginner days never wanted to use, even though I loved it. So, what made me change m mind for this AMV? Well, it's the very first LP song I've ever listened to. And I fell in love with this band straight away. I also happened to hear it in an AMV, which inspired me back then...I actually searched for it and it's still up even now. So yeah, this song has a special place in my heart. Of course, LP as well. To be honest, I've been through an edgy phase in my early teens (nothing too drastic though). I grew out of it by the time I got into high school, but my tastes didn't change. I wasn't listening to rock to keep my edgy appearance, but because I genuinely liked it and because I could relate to a lot of songs from this genre, especially LP. That's why I'm listening to it even to this day. Hope this AMV will help change the general perspective of “Linkin Park AMVs”, even a little. As I mentioned before, the song is really difficult to work with, so I encountered some problems. Otherwise, it would have been ready in a few days, but it took me almost a week…My initial plan was to make it 2 minutes long and use all of the YGO anime. Unfortunately, I couldn’t…Not to mention that there were parts I was running out of ideas, like the one in which I alter between 5D’s and Arc-V (still, it worked out in the end). Not to mention how many times I had to render it…The reason why it ended up so high-pitched is because it kept getting blocked worldwide. The last few seconds were also tricky, since I obviously can’t wait until the episode when Aoi wakes up, so I decided to go with the scene from the ending. However, the creditless version is not out yet, so I tried to leave as less text as possible. R.I.P. Chester Bennington. Thanks for the amazing and relatable music.

I finished reading the unofficial novelization of Grim Fandango last night. (I’d link it, but then Tumblr wouldn’t let this post show up in the tags--just google “grim fandango novel” and it’ll be the first result). It’s a full novelization of the entire game, and not the kind of novelization that just copy-pastes the dialogue and writes out word-for-word what happens.
It’s over 200 pages long, though the last 10 pages or so are two short stories (one amusing one featuring Manny and Glottis getting drunk during New Years between year 2 and 3, and one from Domino’s perspective that fills in some of the gaps at the beginning of the book). If you’re a fan of the game, it’s definitely worth checking out.
You can read my review under the cut.
Quick disclaimer: I don’t know if the author of this novel is still ‘round the intarwebz, but I understand that this novel was written nearly 10 years ago. My criticisms in this review are toward the story itself, not necessarily to the author, whose skills as a writer have doubtlessly improved since he wrote this story.
I’ve been reading fics for 20 years now, and I’ve read my fair share of (attempted) novelizations, both official and unofficial. Of what I’ve read, most novelizations have the same problem: they very stiffly try to stick to the script, resulting in very wooden writing that leaves the reader wondering why they’re reading the novelization instead of watching/playing the source material.
This novelization did not leave me with that feeling.
Not to say that the writing isn’t stiff (more on that later) but the writer adapted the game in such a way that it does not at all read as a direct copy-paste of the game’s script that was clumsily edited into novel form. Rather than trying to add each conversation and write out every puzzle, the author took the whole game as more of a rough outline for his book. Some scenes and conversations are adapted more directly than others, but for the most part, the author does a pretty good job of keeping the story flowing more naturally than a direct, word-for-word adaptation of the game would.
One of the things I liked most about this novelization is the way different parts of the story were fleshed out. We see a lot more of what Manny’s time in the Eighth Underworld was like before the events of the game, how he came to terms with his own death (which is not pretty), what Manny and Glottis’s trip to Rubacava was like, and nearly everything leading up to Year 2. An enormous chunk of the book is spent in Rubacava, as you would imagine.
The author spends a lot of time detailing the specifics of what life is like in El Marrow and Rubacava, Manny getting his casino started, his relationships with Carla and Lola, winning over other souls to the cause of the LSA, and so on. A lot of this is really fascinating to read. But some of it is... not.
Here’s a quote from the website that currently hosts the novel:
Now, a thorough revision of the novel has been completed to be hosted here. Many plot points are developed more fully and the entire text has been tweaked to become more textured, more adult. If the game was intended to reflect film noir, then the novel is meant to key off of the writings of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler and Ross Macdonald.
I have to admit, I do not know a lot about the noir genre. I had little interest in it before playing Grim Fandango (though Who Framed Roger Rabbit is one of my favorite movies, if that counts for anything?), and I’ve never read a novel written in the noir style. Perhaps the style the book was written in is closer to the noir style--I don’t know.
But I have to say, if you’ll excuse the pun, the book is dry as a bone.
I prefer character-focused stories, and while the novel does give some good insight into Manny and the other characters and their feelings at times, other times it feels like the author was more caught up in the plot, the schemes, the worldbuilding, and the politics. There were times when I really, really wished I could see more of what the characters were feeling or thinking, but the author was more concerned about showing the impact this or that event had on the Underworld as a whole--which is still interesting to see, but not what I was hoping to read. Sometimes you get a good character-driven scene (there’s some nice moments between Manny and Meche, and Lola’s death is as shocking as it should be), and that’s one of the main things that kept me reading.
The website pointed out that this version of the novel is a revision, which makes me wonder how much of the original was revised. Given how the novel seems to inconsistently go from more character-driven scenes to dry-as-a-desert exposition, my guess is that the more character-driven stuff came later, and I wish the whole novel was written that way.
I’ve mentioned I’ve read other novelizations, both official and unofficial, before, and another thing I’ve noticed with them is that you can usually tell what parts and what characters the author liked the most. The same holds true for the Grim Fandango novelization. While no major characters are really skipped over, to my memory, the novel really skips over a lot with Velasco, Lupe, the sea bees, and Pugsy and Bibi, which was a bit disappointing, since I like all of those characters. And, bizarrely enough, it spends a lot of time with the communists in Olivia’s bar. (In fact, a huge part of the Rubacava portion is dedicated to Manny and those guys talking about communism.)
While some scenes from the game were elaborated more, others were cut entirely. We don’t see Glottis getting smashed at the cat track, for example--that whole subplot is nixed. Some of the more humorous scenes are cut as well--for example, I was disappointed to find the scene where Manny walks into the fog and falls into the ocean was absent, which makes Velasco’s “are you going to make this a tradition?” line a bit nonsensical. The thing that shocked me a lot though was that, of all the dialogue that was cut or altered, Manny’s character-defining quote--”Love? Love is for the living”--is gone.
I feel this is a good time to point out that Manny in this novel is a bit different from Manny in the game. In the game, Manny goes from “I’m getting out of here even if I have to STEAL a lead and break all the rules” to “I’m not leaving this world until I can save EVERYONE.”
In the novel? He starts as the latter.
I’m not really sure what the purpose of this was. I didn’t really notice the difference in Manny’s character until he got to Rubacava and was already talking about bringing Hector to justice and saving all the lost souls. Maybe this was an attempt at making Manny more sympathetic, but it felt the opposite for me. It makes scenes that would have been more character-developing and emotional more frustrating than anything. I don’t like the “oh woe is me, I’m ruining everyone’s lives even though I didn’t actually do anything wrong” shtick, especially since the game avoided that because Manny is a jerk in the game.
Some of the other characters got a weird treatment as well. Velasco somehow comes off as even more harsh and mean than he is in the game (or maybe that’s just me?). I think next to Manny though, Glottis is the one who got changed the most. As I mentioned before, a lot of the humorous stuff from the game was cut (probably in an attempt to make the novel more “adult”), which necessitated a change in Glottis’s character. As a result, he reads as more mature and responsible than he is in the game, which makes him feel more bland than anything. Lines kept from the game that make him seem silly tend to be reinterpreted as sarcasm. He does, however, get some character development in one scene that was drastically altered from the game, and I won’t spoil that for you. Unfortunately while there is a buildup to this part of Glottis’s character development, it’s mostly dropped a little after that scene, which makes the scene feel more like it was added for shock value.
Not all characters got this treatment, fortunately. Salvador, Eva, Meche, Carla, Olivia, and Lola were written pretty well from what I remember (I read through this slowly and I’m still feeling kinda messed up due to unrelated stuff so I can’t remember everything right now), and I don’t really remember having any objections to the way the villains were written (other than wishing I could have seen a bit more of them).
Among other criticisms, I will say that I feel the novel has a bit too much swearing. There’s language in the game, yes, and that would have been fine, but characters drop the f-bomb with more frequency than necessary in the book. While there’s some suggestive stuff here and there in the game, it’s taken a little bit further in the novel (including one weird scene where Olivia gets a bit closer to Manny than is necessary, and a few alarming comments from Domino in his bonus chapter). It’s not too much like the language is, but the added stuff does feel a little weird.
While yes, I have a lot of criticisms for the book, I didn’t feel like it was a waste of my time. It was interesting to see a different look at the story (even if I disagreed with the author’s interpretation of some scenes and characters), and some of the ways the author interpreted and expanded on the story were genuinely cool and interesting.
If you’re willing to put up with the dryness of a lot of the writing and willing to put up with a very different interpretation of Manny and Glottis, I feel it’s worth a read.

Music Culture in Manchester
The chosen theme of our group project focuses around the Musical Cultures within Manchester. The area in which I have specifically worked in throughout the module is designing and composing the artwork for the album covers, which includes the layout, the colour schemes, the choice of typography, the photographs, the use of shapes, the logos, and the manipulation implied. From considering all these areas, I have had to look upon this project and make decisions from a graphic designer’s point of view, as well as a photographer’s perspective.
To fulfil the brief, I have created four final images of album covers along with an A3 image of the merchandise poster and another A3 image of a collection of skulls_resulting in a total of six final images. The four album designs are all slightly smaller than A3 and are shaped as a square to resemble a CD or LP. Each album has a skull, or several skulls, as the subject matter which include geometric shapes and the use of text presenting the name of the band and the self-titled album ‘Ensnare the Sun’. Both the skull collection and the merchandise cover are landscape images and present multiple photographs which I have taken or composed.
To make these album covers I photographed several skulls from different angles and locations and, once uploaded in Photoshop, used a combination of the exclusion and multiply blend modes to alter their appearance and merge several images together. Some areas and layers needed to have a low opacity in order to allow other imagery to appear through. Both images presenting the left-hand side of a skull with the roses are the Standard Edition albums which can either be purchased with a black background or a white background. This is so the buyer can choose to purchase the cover they prefer and also so that all the albums work as a cohesive set of photographic images; two being white and two being black. The album cover presenting the skull from a low-level angle with horns on a black background is the Special Edition album which took drastically longer to make. To create the smashed horn effect, I duplicated the layer several times and cropped into each one in different areas. After that I altered the sizes of each one and moved them around the page to appear as if the horn had immediately been hit by a heavy object. I also presented the side of the face as if it was shattering with part of the jaw breaking away. Finally, the album cover with the two cat skulls and a white background is the Deluxe Edition album. Making this design took more time with experimenting with the tones and contrast as the skulls were more detailed than the previous ones. However, completing this design probably took the least amount of time. The skulls in this design are the same cat skull but photographed from two different camera angles, I also incorporated the use of shapes and lines which are presented in front or behind the subject matters for all the editions. Creating each album design was, overall, a slow process and took several hours to complete, but each worked as a success and resulted with the excellent outcomes which I had hoped for.
I admit that the subject matters of my works are illogical in terms of meaning. However, I have been inspired by the Surrealism Movement and Pioneers of the movement such as Salvador Dali and Man Ray who also produce works which are, sometimes, illogical. As four album covers, they represent the group project and the chosen theme which we wanted to cover which relates to the music scene. I have also researched into artists such as Hieronymus Bosch and H.R Giger who have both heavily influenced my work. Both these artists have made surreal paintings which present demonic themes which are either biblical, dystopian, or demonstrate some form of negativity through unsettling subject matters. And so I have made work which presents a combination of this to relate to the Heavy Metal/Thrash genre. I tend to always get my ideas when sleeping. Normally I would wake up during the night with the idea and immediately write it down or do a quick sketch of it so that I remember it the following morning. I have never gained a ‘good’ idea for my works whilst being awake and so sleeping, and dreaming, remains as the best solution for me to get my ideas.
As a group, we decided to create a lie based around our chosen topic, consisting of a ‘fictional’ band which all our imagery and designs would be made for. The purpose for creating a fictional band was originally to allow the audience to think that we, as photographers, were actually the band members and that our work is expressing us and our interests; we later changed this so that we were the artists who made the photographic work specifically for an underground band which expresses the members and their interests. The other reason for doing this is so that our body of work, as a whole, seemed as if it was intended for a purpose rather than simply being photography work without any intention for being used for anything, besides presenting Manchester’s music culture. We didn’t announce that the band did not exist until the end of the exhibition at the back of the hand-outs. This was so that the viewers could engage with the project and gain an understanding of what we wanted to do but also so that they discover the truth about our work, and see how photography can manipulate that truth.
To continue creating the lie around a ‘fictional’ band, and to allow audiences to believe in it, I decided to make an advertising board of the merchandise for the band. Doing this involved layer-blending my own photographs onto the products to help promote the band along with the typography. I did this so the audience felt as if they could purchase actual artefacts and feel as if it was for something real. I also did this so that the band, and what we created for that band, seemed more realistic and true to life if merchandise could be purchased as well.
Having imagery which is designed specifically for a band could represent what it is all about in terms of musical genre or hidden meanings_which links with the photo-montages and manipulated imagery made for the exhibition, as it is all ‘untrue’ and deliberately edited to look a certain way. This further links to the band itself not being real, and being a part of the lie along with the the manipulated photography and the merchandise which does not exist.
In terms of layout, I decided to focus on the use of space in each album cover so that they did not appear overcrowded or busy. I presented each subject matter in the centre of the page with the text underneath, allowing the eyes of the viewers to focus on the subject first and then notice the name. This was so the imagery still remained as the main feature of the work, but so that it worked together with the other aspects of the album designs. I only used two colours for these artworks, which were either black or white, so that the collection remained neutral and presented possible themes relating to light and dark, life and death, a positive and a negative etc. But overall keeping the finished designs simplistic.
The font which I have used for both the album covers and the merchandise poster is ‘Futura Lt’ and is presented with a strike going through the lettering. I have chosen to use this type of font because of how the lettering is thin and has no distracting serifs. The typeface appears masculine as it is striking but is not too bold or overpowering for the viewer; it is clean, precise, and engaging for the audience. The reason for including the strike through the text is so that it adds more obscurity to the band and the surreal artwork, but more so that it allows the whole artwork to seem original and to allow the viewers to keep wanting to analyse it. The choice of text is creative, simplistic, all in capitals, and is in contrast to the background colour so that it cannot be overlooked easily _allowing it to be more eye-catching. Which, overall, makes it appear as an immediate recognisable logo as well as just text.
The name ‘Ensnare the Sun’ was inspired from the genre of music I personally like to listen to, and which inspires a lot of my personal work. I discovered that one of my personal favourite bands have also made an instrumental track with this same title in which added to the inspiration, but also made me concerned, to name my own creation as this. From this, I was considering to name the band ‘Ensnare Our Sun’ instead, however I didn’t think this sounded quite as powerful or as dramatic_it also sounded more like an ask, as if it was telling the audience to do the action, whereas my original intention sounded more like a verb, as if it was an action which was already happening or about to happen. I decided to stick with the original name for that reason and because it sounded quite mysterious and fitted in with the theme of the project and genre. ‘Ensnare’ meaning to seize, catch, or trap; and including ‘the Sun’ meaning capturing or trapping the light, and creating darkness. And so, I decided to name our fictional band ‘Ensnare the Sun’.
The purpose for including the unedited skull collection as part of the exhibition was to portray the possessions, which a member of the band has collected, which is completely unedited but still associates with our theme. The reason for photographing skulls is so that they fit in with the genre and also to show the personal interests and collections of the owner or band. These images were left unedited so that they show what inspired the rest of the artworks. This was also to fit in with the lie surrounding our project, allowing audiences to think I was displaying actual possessions of someone from the band; when infact, all the skulls are ornaments, decorative items, or accessories which I own. I decided to present the skulls all in the same image and all together so that they are seen as ‘a Collection’ which has inspired the album art.
Due to the band being a Heavy Metal/Thrash band, each skull has been included in the album design to try and create an impression for the audience of almost being ‘rebellious’ towards most mainstream music and other artworks presenting different styles or themes. The reason for having the skull shattering on the Special Edition cover is to allow it to present the different feelings towards the associations of skulls; which are both positive and negative. Associations of this genre tend to present skulls and present themes of the paranormal, evil, life and death, and sometimes Satanic references. For some people skulls do represent this, but for others skulls symbolise strength, protection, power, fearlessness, wisdom, guidance, overcoming death, surviving through a difficult time, or even immortality. People assign meaning to certain objects to represent ideas or qualities. Despite this, my work is not religious in any way, but is more focused towards the strange and peculiar. I didn’t want to create artwork for a typical mainstream band as I am personally not interested with a lot of that music, and my fascination is within Metal and the associations and artwork surrounding it. I think my work for the project will be aimed more for people who enjoy the genre of music that it presents and/or are into artistic designs which portray the associations of Metal; probably people between the ages of 18-35.
The entire exhibition took place at the Old Pint Pot, Adelphi Street, Salford on Monday 6th March between 15:00-19:00. We decided to host the event here so that it related to our chosen theme, as many underground musicians/bands normally perform in local pubs or small music venues as a starting point. The venue also has a disability access facility, and we displayed our work so that people can view them up close if short-sighted. The hand-outs contained all the information we wanted the audience to know, which even revealed the truth about the lie we created. One other member of our group produced the these by using the album designs and typography which I created to help promote our exhibition and, together, composed over forty leaflets containing our artist statements and information on the project. In making these, he presented the title of our project and all our names on the front cover in the Futura Lt typeface with a strike through the lettering. This seemed to cause a bit of confusion for our viewers at first, as a couple asked why this strike appeared through our names on the front cover. And so we explained that the reason for this was to match the typography which was presented on all four album covers. We had the hand-outs left on the tables within the exhibition area for people to easily spot and pick up. Many leaflets were taken as souvenirs by the visitors, and all of them seemed to like the way we presented the information within the booklet. A couple of guests even told us that they were truly convinced with the artwork and our project, and actually believed that Ensnare the Sun was a real band which they had just never heard of before. Meaning that our lie must have worked.
The way I decided to display my work at the venue was to have my four album designs all together on a wall in a square shape, to resemble a CD/LP, and have the two Standard Editions presented at the bottom and the Special Edition and Deluxe Edition at the top. I did this so the Special and Deluxe Edition were seen as more important over the Standard Editions, as they differ in terms of photo editing and, if real, the bonus tracks and DVD which would be included. I wanted the merchandise image and the skull collection image to be both presented on the left-hand side of the album covers so that the albums were not left in a corner and look less-important. I also displayed it this way so that the skull collection was seen as the ingredients to making all the artwork, and that the merchandise were the artefacts of those unique creations. I was inspired by Dwight Eschliman to do this as he has documented the ingredients for several foods and presented them alongside the finished result for many of his photographic works. I have presented the skull collection and merchandise advert as side-projects that, along with the completed album covers, connect and work together as an entire collection.
We wanted to play with the idea of ‘photography capturing reality’ when infact we presented a false statement of this_allowing the audience to believe we created work for an existing band as well as presenting Manchester’s music culture. Our audience may think that what we did, and the idea of using the photographer as a truth-teller, is fun and creative_as photography is supposed to tell the truth. When infact, in most cases, photography is anything but the truth.
